Let me tell you about my first time meeting Minthara and locking myself into the grove raid
I was having a chat with someone in the comments of my fanfic where I had told them I locked myself into the grove raid on my first run. They got really curious as to how I managed that. But, my response got a bit too long, so I figured I’d kinda do a bit of a writeup and reminisce about my first time playing Baldurs Gate 3 all the way back on Christmas Day and how I raided the grove with Minthara.
And oooo boi, where do I begin! Just a massive string of first time player who doesn’t know how to look, how to listen, or how to read. To start, never found Wyll in the grove (and when I eventually did he was big mad). I have no idea how I missed him. For some reason, my dumb ass also didn’t explore north of Blighted Village. So, I never found Karlach (and when I eventually did she was big mad). I went down to the swamp and Ethel just humiliated me, so I decided to go back until I was level 5 cause she was level 5. I never found Wood Woad so I never learned of the Shadow Druid stuff. I also never found the Underdark or Grymforge until exploring the goblin camp AFTER the raid so the only thing left for me to do was the grove.
Kagha wouldn’t talk to me cause she wanted me to go to Zevlor. I don’t know how I did it, but Zevlor wanted me to kill Kagha and just refused to talk to me when I said I wasn’t gonna kill Kagha. I also never found Mol so never got the quest to steal the idol.
So, all that was left was the goblin camp. Went downstairs to find the bear in the cage, I kinda figured it was Halsin. But, I think I picked the wrong dialogue options with the goblin kids and pissed off the bear. Long story short, bear got dead. All that was left was talking with Minthara and man she scared the absolute fucking shit outta me! When she told me to tell her where the grove was, I was literally too scared to tell her no and gave her the location. Don’t know bout you, but powerful and scary women can convince me to do just about anything! I felt awful, but it felt like it was the only way to progress the grove conflict.
Then I started the raid and saw that I still had the option to turn against her. I was so excited and thought “Yay! I can still save them AND I’ll have an army of tiefling and druids.” WRONG! I had 3 tieflings and only 1 was actually worth a damn and the druids slept through their big day. Minthara swept the floor with my ass, again, and again, and again. I tried that fight for 3 hours and Minthara won the fight every time. Mind you, I was severely under leveled and was doing the raid at level 3.
I may have found Withers, but didn’t know about respecing so Shadowheart was still in her default class of Trickery Domain (WHICH IS GARBAGE), Astarion who was an Arcane Trickster (WHICH IS GARBAGE), and Bae’zel who carried our asses as best as she could. And then there was me, a Rogue Assassin who loses her biggest advantage after round 1.
In typical drow fashion, she quite literally beat me into submission and I just said, “fuck it, I’mma join her.” Easiest fight in the game, didn’t break a sweat. When I talked to her in the inner sanctum, I genuinely felt nauseous to my stomach, but I decided I wasn’t gonna reload and was live with my choices, even if they’re stupid. I told Minthara that what we did was murder and we deserve to hang for it. Then she said “Look at me” and I was hooked. She has had me in her clutches ever since.
I did the goblin party and her and I went to the chapel. I figured I was gonna get a fade to black kinda sex scene. WRONG! It has got to be the most graphic and explicit sex scene I’ve seen in a game second to Cyberpunk. I was literally in shock the whole time. And then, afterwards, I cuddled with her and she wanted to talk about my feelings and I'm all "O.o, you're supposed to be evil?" The game may have been painting her as an evil character, but that moment showed that there was so much depth to her than just being an evil character. A moment most players will never see cause most don't raid the grove. I truly wasn’t expecting to see her again in Moonrise. And when I did, I knew I had to get her outta there no matter what.
Looking back on it now, it’s interesting for me to see how many things had to go wrong in order for me to end up raiding the grove. If I had found Karlach first, it wouldn’t have happened. If I found the Underdark/Grymforge first and leveled up a bit, wouldn’t have happened. If I freed Halsin, I probably would have killed the goblin leaders (including Minthara cause I did not know about the knock out method on my first play through) and the raid wouldn’t have happened. Hell, if I had thought to lower the difficulty to Explorer it wouldn’t have happened! But I didn’t get that big brain idea until the fight with Nere, well after the grove raid.
Minthara left such a massive impression on me because I did raid the grove. It really does make me think of her line “I would have just been another casualty in your crusade against the Absolute and no one would remember me.” If I did things right, that’s exactly who she would have been and probably would have been dead in most of my playthroughs. But, instead, I fucked everything up and she most certainly wasn’t a casualty and I don’t think I’ll ever be able to forget her. When meeting her in the goblin camp, never could I have imagined relating so much to a character. Out of all the companions, I relate to Minthara the most and Karlach comes a close second.
I don’t always raid the grove, but I will never kill her under any circumstance. Her and Shadowheart are the only two companions who have survived every playthough I’ve done and will survive every future runs cause I just cannot play this game without them. And it’s all because I was a chronic dumbass and raided the grove.

OK, for realsies this time (maybe?), a few more explorational highlights from the grove area, and then we're off in the direction of the goblin camp, because Rakha craves goblin blood and answers and it seems the most likely place to get both. (After not being able to hurt Mizora, Sceleritas, OR Raphael, she's feeling very pent up and not in the fun way.)
Rescued Mirkon from the harpies on the beach! We didn't do this with Hector last time. In this case, I suspect it was definitely Wyll who originally encouraged Rakha to go down and see if the kid was okay. ("Your favorite drownings all take place in shallow water," the Narrator helpfully informs us. "Just a slice of the ankle tendons...") She also got completely hypnotized by the harpies as well, because it occurred to me that (to her recollection) she has never heard music of any kind before, let alone music that beautiful - and not only that, but it quieted the Urge. Lae'zel (I assume) snaps her out of it. And once Rakha figures out what's going on and that something else was taking control of the inside of her head, she got MAD. This fight didn't go particularly well for anyone except Lae'zel, who rocked an absolutely brutal crit on one of the harpies, but Rakha got to expend some frustration on all of them with some applications of Burning Hands, which made her feel overall a little calmer. We got a Folk Hero inspiration for Wyll for helping the kid out. Gale was also pleased, although I think Rakha cares about that somewhat less.
Hit level 3! Rakha now has more spell slots and can (with sorcery points) cast an action spell as a bonus action. More fire!
Chatted with Volo. Rakha, after her recent interactions with Sceleritas and Raphael, absolutely got jumpscared by him greeting her as "my good friend!" until she realizes Volo is just Like That. She's also utterly baffled when he asks her for information on the goblin battle and then deliberately writes down falsehoods instead. ("A mythweaver," Lae'zel says disdainfully. "This man has no respect for truth.") He does confirm what she's picked up about the presence of the Absolute cult, though - and indicates that the goblins are also part of it, although it's hard to tell whether she should believe him.
Stopped down to see Mol since Mirkon said we should. It was not a particularly exciting conversation, but contact has been made which will be relevant later. Rakha definitely looks at the kids differently than she does the adults in the area, mostly because of Wyll's influence and his story of how he became the Blade of Frontiers.
Checked in with the two tiefling guards in the back corner room, one of whom is threatening to shoot a caged goblin prisoner in revenge for her dead brother. Unsurprisingly, Rakha did nothing to stop this. ("Your mind wanders," points out the Narrator, in the soft, cold drawl she uses for the Dark Urge's specific thoughts. "If the crossbow bolt shot through her mouth, would she taste the metal before she died?") Stand back and admire the guard's overflowing hate. She waits and watches while the guard's crossbow bolt slams directly between the prisoner's eyes. Interestingly - Wyll approved of her choice.
Interacting with the squirrel above the main grove was uh. Sure something.
Narrator: This squirrel might be the single most adorable creature you can recall in all your stunted memory! It would be ever so twee if it were climbing a tree.
And then Rakha got this weird grin on her face and hauled off with a kick; there was an explosion of blood and the squirrel's dead body landed in the upper branches of the tree nearby.
"Terrific," says Lae'zel (presumably while Gale and Wyll look on in complete horror). "If I'm ever harangued by a rodent, I know who to call for."
Narrator: You stare at the body before you. You have no idea what just happened.
Rakha feels the beast in her head settle, its recent frustration soothed by this spilling of an innocent creature's blood. She remembers the deep, crunching impact of her boot and a deep shiver rolls through her whole body.
"My body moved without my command," she mutters hoarsely. "I couldn't control it."
The others don't respond. What is there to say?
Narrator: The swirling bile cauldron of your brain is cooking up a poison stew - served and seasoned by that venomous butler.
#bjk plays bg3 durge#rakha the dark urge#well that escalated quickly and upsettingly at the end there o.o;#i feel like that's going to be a regular durge experience

tails (through the eyes of a miqo)
04-16
a replacement jornal is kind but does not seem useful right now
04-27
the mol children are very sweet but they have been pulling on my tail for hours so i need to figure out why and make a note so I dont furget.
-> Cirena says au ra kids pull on each others tails to bother each other or get attention or something. and they hold adult tails like holding hands. it doesnt hurt them since their tails are mostly muscle. you can tug on their tail to get them to stop but never pull a matur auri tail since its fur children who are being snotty and not adults.
WELL alright I told her that miqo’te do not like their tails being pulled because it hurts so hopefully theyll understand and not surprise some other cat when they come join us for a few weeks. if one of the adults thought it was funny they might get the wrong impression you know…? Might as well grab my behind.
I shall paste in my notes from Ishgard to organize.
Elezen
desq • wwwww
despite Alphinaud and Urianger being very meticulus about their tails almost no one in Ishgard has one. they are, apparently, very fragile, and can be easily pulled off or injured. because the majority of everyone contributes to the war effort no one has one. I am assured Sharlean Sharlyan has a much larger population of tailed elezen.
They are a status symbol in both cities. Here it is usually shameful to have one and in Sharlyan it is shameful not to have one. weird
There are far more duskwight in the lancers guild. very different - their eyes shine in the dark, and their whiskers are far longer and furrier, and their tails are fasinating! so many shapes and colors. I wonder if the wildwood are jealous they look so magical. I am not about to ask Folques though.
08 Hrothgar
Pulling on their tails doesn’t hurt either! What in the seven hells I thought we were friends
It’s fun for them. It’s like a kid will do it to get their dad to start wrestling. This kid is chewing on his dad’s and he’s ignoring it
Viera
I don’t think they have a tail I just saw someone get kicked in the head
#play game#just a silly. a little bit of#specbio#idk about this format but the viera joke wouldn’t let me go

Sam centric asks. Even numbers only. Please?
2. Best season of Sam?
I’m gonna have to go with season 2. It’s the best season of powers!Sam and it’s one of the last times we get to see Sam stand up for himself and get angry without it being painted as a bad thing by the narrative. Season 2 is probably my favorite overall but it’s definitely one of Sam’s better ones.
4. Most compelling dynamic?
“Compelling” is an interesting word to use here. Normally I’d say Sam & Dean but I feel like after 15 seasons I’ve gotten to know their dynamic pretty well (almost too well honestly). So I’ll go with Sam & Jack because we didn’t get nearly enough of them and Sam really wasn’t appreciated as a father figure for him.
6. What do you think about Sam's ending?
It’s beautifully tragic. He finally got the happy apple-pie life he wanted but he had to lose literally everyone he loved before it could happen. He finally got to have a kid that he could raise in the safety of a life outside of hunting but he had to do it without Dean or John or even Mary to see it. Ultimately, I don’t think he was fully happy until he died and met Dean in heaven again.
8. Your opinion on Sam's relationship with Dean?
Sam and Dean’s relationship is toxic, some level of abusive (mostly in the later seasons), and both of their biggest weaknesses. On some level, they’re both terrible for each other. But I think Dean is worse in the sense that he views Sam as his property but he makes Sam prove himself worthy of being so. It’s comparable to a parent who never tells their child that they’re proud of them because it’ll make them better. Sam constantly has to prove how much he loves Dean so that Dean can be assured he’s not going anywhere. This involves Sam making excuses for Dean and his poor behavior and Dean guilt-tripping Sam any time he gets the nerve to call him out on it. I long for the days of early spn where Dean would acknowledge he was wrong and give Sam a chance to get back at him. I also hate that Dean stopped standing up for Sam. Sure, he’ll protect Sam in an emergency but he doesn’t stop other people from insulting or devaluing him. Hell, sometimes he agrees with it. Sometimes it’s hard for me to believe this is the same man who sold his soul for Sam and begged him not to get mad.
10. Soulless Sam, yay or nay?
Nay. The story arc was fine enough but he’s creepy as hell and I could do without it.
12. Sam & Jack or Sam & Magda?
Contrary to my answer to #4, I’m going to say Sam & Magda because she deserved better and he deserved to help her.
14. Sam storyline that should have never been dropped?
Him being a psychic and his demon blood addiction. He should’ve come to use his powers for good on his own and make Dean just deal with it. His psychic dreams should’ve been guiding him since season 8 and he should’ve been moving books around the MOL library with his mind. It also probably would’ve helped him with training Jack and definitely would’ve helped with Magda. Hell, he should be able to exorcise angels! And demon!Dean should’ve tried to feed him his blood and Sam should’ve had a hard time resisting.
16. Your take on Samjess?
I think Sam loved Jess but not in a fully romantic sense. He loved her more than any other woman in his life and he wanted to spend the rest of it with her, but he wasn’t willing to open up to her and share his full self. It’s cute but ultimately, it was always meant to be a fairytale.
18. wee!Sam headcanon?
20. What is the worst thing the writers did to Sam?
Everything to do with the Gadreel arc but mostly how they started having characters blame Sam for everything, including himself, and making sure he’s not allowed to defend himself without him being branded as the bad guy. Dean can call himself the dictator of their relationship and that’s fine but Sam can’t get a little huffy because of the trauma he’s endured without someone branding him as “angry”. It irritates me.
22. Favorite BAMF moment?
There are so so many but I think I’m gonna have to go with the time he shot God with the Equalizer gun, knowing full well it would hurt him too.
24. Is there anyone better than Sully?
Sam, of course! But seriously he’s the sweetest and he deserves much love and happiness.
26. Which character should have been more obsessed with/interested in Sam?
As much as it pains me to say it, Lucifer. Sam is his chosen vessel, the one human meant to help him with his plan to take over the world. I loved his fixation on Sam in season 5 and I wish that had remained a part of his character going forward. Hallucifer in season 7 was great too, even if it wasn’t technically real, but when they brought him back in later seasons he should’ve retained that obessession instead of having them push it onto God and other characters. I think it would’ve made his character more consistent and entertaining to watch.
28. Whump Sam, yay or nay?
Whump Sam is best Sam but also worst Sam. He looks so pretty covered in blood but it hurts me to know he’s in pain.... It’s a mixed bag.
30. Which character(s) deserve(s) to rot in hell for crimes against Sam?
All of them. Chuck, Lucifer, and Dean are the main ones but tbh almost every single character in this show screwed over Sam in some way and I’ll stand up for him since he won’t.

Golden Hour ☼
A Triple Frontier Story - Part 1/?
Word Count: 3.1k
Summary: Molly [reader] has been living on the beaches of Mexico for the last 3 years since being honourably discharged from the army and leaving her fiance back in Texas. Riddled with PTSD, she went on a bender, ending up in a small coastal farming town in the Yucatan. Forced into early retirement despite being the best sniper in her company and all the trauma that came with that responsibility, she has worked hard to obtain peace in her new life. She was closer than ever to fully achieving it, that is, until her ex-crew member and lifelong friend, Will Miller, showed up with a proposition to bring her out of retirement for one last job with the boys. -----------------------------
The sun was hovering around the horizon, beating down on the beach as the water lapped the shore. You rolled the dirty cup around in the dishwater absentmindedly, scrubbing the dried coffee off the sides, letting your hands soak. It had been an easy day, a 5am rise for a morning surf, a bike ride to the market to pick up some fruit, and a mid day Dive to a wreck site with some tourists. All-in you had pocketed around $50, including tips, and a complimentary phone number from the bachelor who had tried to frisk you while you filled the tanks on the dock. It would get you enough food to last through to the weekend, and if it didn't, well, you could always call the bachelor tourist for dinner.
You were caught up in a daydream when you heard something rolling in through the bush, the sounds of the studded tires reverberating off of the rock and palm trees, the sand and jungle brush cracking and moving, the dull hum of the engine. You tipped your head closer to the window over the sink to see a slick black motorbike come to a stop near your hitch, a large muscular figure hooking his helmet on the handlebar before jumping off and walking towards your trailer door. Your hand hovered over the sidearm you kept loaded on your kitchen counter.
“Hey Sweet Cheeks” The voice shouted, the silhouette keeping its arms and hands visible.
Your stomach dropped. No way. The voice belonged to the boy who had pinched your ass as a kid, annoyed your ass as a teen, saved your ass as a new recruit in the army, and more than once grabbed your ass at the bar while you squeezed your ass into a tight dress. You froze for a moment before you looked out your window and saw him standing at your trailer door, waiting.
You opened it abruptly, swinging it hard enough that it hit the side of the trailer with a loud clank. You kept your arm out to keep it wide, surveying the sight in front of you with a shocked expression, your chest rising and falling in shallow, tight breaths of disbelief. He did the same, his eyes travelling up from your bare feet, along your tanned legs, to your jean shorts and your braless tank top, all the way to your shaded eyes.
“Will Miller” You spoke, his name like a muscle memory in your mouth. “What the fuck are you doing here.”
You took three long seconds before you smiled, then you practically jumped out of your trailer and into his arms, your legs wrapping around his waist, laughing uncontrollably in surprise and excitement. He squeezed you tight, one hand around your hips, the other on the back of your head, compressing you into his muscular frame. He let out a low growl of contentment while he nuzzled his head into your hair.
“Good to see you Molly” He mumbled.
You squeezed him with as much strength as you could muster before he let you slide down, your feet hitting the sand below. You brought a hand up to shade your eyes, the sun beaming directly in your eyes from behind his shoulder. You knew his face like the back of your hand, you had grown up with it chasing after you with spiders and nerf guns, then spent 10 years in active service being chased by cockroaches and real guns. You hadn’t seen him since you moved to Mexico.
“What are you doing here, man!” You laughed, you couldn’t stop smiling. He hadn’t changed at all, aside from a few new laugh lines around his mouth. His smile was reserved as usual, but unabashed.
“Oh, you know….I was in the area” He winked and looked around, snickering. Your end of the beach was cut off to tourists and hardly even accessible to locals. You weren’t even sure how they got a trailer there in the first place. It was as visibly remote as you could get in the Yucatan these days.
“How did you…find me here?” You watched him watching you closely, like he was looking for something.
“A local kid working at the market. I asked for directions to the little local Turkey with yellow hair and he practically drove me here himself.” He grinned with mischief and dodged my hand as I smacked him. “He seemed to know who I was, too.” He looked at you expectantly, which made you giggle to yourself.
Your friends son, Erik, was one of the few kids who spoke clean English and visited often. You had helped him with his math tests last year and he had agreed to cut you firewood for a year. He had seen the picture of you and your crew in your trailer and demanded stories around the fire every time he came by. He asked about Will the most.
“I can’t believe you’re here right now.” You said, stricken with shock again and unable to gather yourself. “Whats it been…2, 3 years?”
“2 years and 5 months” Will said quietly, smiling at you. “You look younger somehow”
“Yeah, well, that’s the tequila and the saltwater for ya. Stick me back in Iraq and strap a rifle on my chest, ill age 10 years in front of your very eyes”
Will nodded with a knowing smile and looked around, checking out your decaying trailer and old truck, his eyes settling on the boat overturned on the beach, which you were in the midst of patching and doing engine maintenance on.
You shared a quiet moment together, taking each other in, before he smiled again and open his arms for another hug. “Come’ere kid”
He squeezed you again and this time found your butt, pinching it.
“Fucki-OUCH” You wailed, pulling away and smacking his chest. He laughed like a little boy and bounced away a step, stretching his arms and sighing, relaxed.
“So,” You said after a few moments of silence, before stepping back and pacing in a half circle once. “You want a drink?”
He smiled at you and you felt your head spin. It was the same familiar smile he used to give you when you were kids and you couldn’t reach something or you needed his help lifting something. Not patronizing, just…pleasantly amused.
“Yeah, a drink would be nice.”
“Grab a chair, i’ll be right back” You motioned to the seats surrounding the fire pit that was on the edge of the sand. He turned and walked towards them and you felt your chest tighten. You could never calm down when he was around, staring at you, his physical presence was overwhelming. Even still, after all this time. After everything that had happened in the war, your breath caught when he smiled.
When you came back out with two glasses of bourbon, neat, he had his feet perched toe to heel and was leaning back, enjoying the view of the ocean.
“Pretty okay view to wake up to” You said, handing him his drink. You saluted each others glasses and he smiled, looking back out at the water.
“Unreal. I wouldn’t leave.”
“I don’t” You winked.
“So how did you end up here anyways” He took a drink and savoured it, balancing the glass on the armrest.
You took a long, deep breath and leaned back in your chair before exhaling quickly and looking around.
“I came down after Pete and I.…after I left. He took the house, I took…my shit, and I split.” You laughed bitterly, rubbing your eyebrow. “I don’t know. I went rogue for a bit and woke up here one morning after a bender, just never left.”
Will was quiet for a few moments, considering what you said, before speaking.
“Did things end badly - with Pete?” He was watching you intently.
You held his gaze boldly, amidst your discomfort regarding the topic, your face a blank canvas.
“No” You lied, forcing a smile.
His eyes narrowed slightly but he looked back at the water and took another drink.
“What’re you doing to make money?”
“Lots. Pole dancing, escorting. Selling drugs.”
You were mostly kidding about the last part, but you had sold a couple bags of weed to some of the local teenagers after you found out they were buying it from the cartel - trying to keep their names out of the streets as long as you could before they inevitably got recruited.
He was looking at you again, his face dark now, a shadow of the light hearted kid you had gone to prom with.
“Seriously, Mol. What are you doing down here.”
“Getting interrogated apparently. Calm down, Ironhead. Nothing illegal.” But when he didn’t budge you continued “Im a Dive Master, I take tourists out to some of the reefs every couple of days to pay the rent, and I help out at some of the farms on the off season.”
Half satisfied by your half answers he swirled his drink and took a sip.
“Enough about me, care to explain what you’re doing down here? Turning up at sundown like an old friend?” You watched him closely, observing his posture, noticing the hilt of his sidearm poking out the side of his t-shirt.
“Working” He said bluntly, returning your snarky smile with an equally shaded answer. “Recruiting.”
Your breath caught in your throat and you sat deeper in your chair, unbelieving how crassly he was owning up.
“Unbelievable. Just right down to business eh? You turn up here after 2 years, sorry, 2 years and 5 months and you don’t have the courtesy to wait 10 minutes before you pull this shit? No.” You said firmly. “No. Im retired."
He nodded, then leaned forward and downed the rest of his drink, placing the glass at his feet and resting his elbows on his knees. He watched you with such an intensity that you shifted in your seat and looked away.
“Mol, look at me.”
You sneered and looked at him, your hat shading your eyes from the setting sun, but barely.
“Its a 2 day job at most. 1 day and a single shot if we’re clean-”
“No” You cut him off, leaning forward to stand up.
“Its 5 million USD” He said quickly, stopping you from walking away. “Each.”
You took a deep breath and waited, considering sitting back down. You stayed standing. You tilted your head to the side and lifted your hand to your mouth.
“Who” You said quietly, not wanting to give him the impression you were seriously considering it.
“Juarez.”
You choked you had laughed so hard and so quick. You sat down abruptly on the edge of your chair, looking at him like he had two heads.
“No way. Not a chance. Are you kidding?”
He said nothing, just watched you and raised his eyebrows, the words ‘5 million’ written across his forehead like a banner. When it was clear he wasn’t joking you leaned forward, matching his posture, ducking your head down until you had his eyes squared with yours.
“Listen to me. There’s dangerous, there’s what we did in the army, and then there’s that.” You waited for a reaction that never came. You pressed on. “Will, I have been down here for 3 years. Living, working, fucking with these people. Juarez isn’t just a cartel boss who cuts fingers off and mails them to the victims kids on their birthdays. He systematically brings down monarchies. He beheads children. That man is a fucking monster.”
Will sat firm, his jaw set, not breaking eye contact. He was challenging you, as he had a million times before, only this time neither of you were in uniform and both of you had level playing ground. He wasn’t your superior officer, and you weren’t his sniper.
“We’ve dealt with worse.” He said finally.
You broke eye contact and looked at your bare feet planted in the sand, your tanned skin smooth and warm. No scars, no combat boots, no dust. Freedom. What you had worked for your whole life.
“Its 5 million, Mol. One target, one shot. Nothing more. Freedom for the rest of your life.”
“I already have that. Look around” You put your arms out, the whole of the beach and your paradise encapsulated in them, rage tickling under your skin. “5 million aint worth giving this up, 5 billion wouldn’t even be.”
He looked around and back at your trailer, at the rusting metal and the fraying tarps, before setting his gaze on your arm, on the scar that ran up it, and finally back to your eyes.
“Hows the Physio down here.” He said darkly. “Your off season farm job’s health insurance covering it?”
You flinched like he had hit you, your eye flickering as the memory of the bullet cutting through your arm and shattering the bone blazed like fire in your peripheries.
“Fuck you, Will.” You said finally, your voice cracking when you said his name. You stood up and pushed past him, walking towards your trailer. Subconsciously you held your arm and rubbed it, the phantom pain lingering. The deep and permanent damage had bothered you every day since you obtained the injury 6 years ago, on one of the last missions you had done with Will and the crew before they retired.
“Molly” Will grabbed your arm from behind, pulling you to a stop, and you winced. Not from pain, more from recognition. “Im sorry” He said intently, his eyes searching yours.
“I can’t” You said finally, your posture strong and your eyes set. You were still muscular and built like you were in active duty, but so was Will. “Even if I wanted to - I can’t.”
Will took a step closer, his breath almost on your face now.
“Why not” He pushed.
“Because” You spit back at him “I can’t use a scope. Or Binoculars. My heads fucked up.”
Wills eyebrows knit together and he looked over your head with his gaze, face taught with confusion.
“What’you mean?”
You shrugged and licked your bottom lip, looking away from his prying eyes.
“I had an accident a few years ago. I got a concussion that fucked with my equilibrium, haven’t been able to use binoculars or a scope properly since.”
You took a breath and straightened your back, setting your jaw. If he was going to play hard ass, then so were you. Fuck his intimidation tactics, you had learned how to deal with those in elementary school. He would have to try harder.
“Service?”
You shook your head, your lips pursed.
“After I left”
“What happened?”
Your eye flickered again, the memory of Pete attacking you and knocking you down a flight of stairs, your head cracking off the banister, still as fresh as if it happened yesterday.
“I fell.”
Will, visibly agitated now, shifted his weight to his other foot. “Why didn’t you say anything?”
“I don’t know, probably because I didn’t expect you to come down here and try to recruit me to whack the leader of my neighbourhoods biggest cartel?”
“Mol, im your friend, you shou-“ He started, but you backed up, shaking your head.
“Oh yeah? And where have you been? Last time I checked a prerequisite for friendship was checking in once in a fucking blue moon.”
Will bared his teeth in frustration and took a deep breath, looking down at his feet with his hands on his hips.
“Was it Pete?”
You didn’t answer, which was answer enough. Will’s hands covered his face and he groaned audibly, rubbing them into his hair in frustration.
“Molly. I have like 5 minutes left in me before I pull the fuse line to your propane, light a match, and drag your ass out of here on the back of my fucking bike. Come for drinks. Hear us out. Please.”
“Us?”
“They’re all here, waiting at the bar.”
You shook your head, smiling bitterly. Of course they were.
“There are better soldiers out there. Better snipers out there. Go recruit one of them.”
“Not true. You never missed a shot.”
“I missed once” You started, your voice lowering reflexively. “And you know what shot I missed.”
He held your eyes as the memory lingered in the air between you, the sound of the bullet hitting the body of the child behind your target would be something you took to your grave. It haunted every minute of every day.
“Molly, come on. Look at you. You’re living in a dump trailer with a half broke boat and a fucking peddle bike. You’re better than this and you know it.”
“Im not better than shit. Don't feed me that 'we were warriors' crap. I was a girl who was good with a gun, and I killed people. And now i'm broken. Thats the truth."
“MOL, I NEED YOU-” He yelled now, his hand shaking. The outburst took you off guard and you stepped back, your face slack. Will grabbed his hand and rubbed it, turning around and sighing deeply before facing you again. “Molly, I need you to hear us out. Come have a drink in town, listen to Pope’s plan. Please.”
You were still on guard from his outburst but you closed your mouth, your eyes dropping to his hand, which still shook lightly. PTSD was a tricky motherfucker.
You blinked silently a few times before raising your eyes to his again, a silent moment of recognition passing between you. He wouldn’t be here if he wasn’t seriously asking for help, and the rest of the crew wouldn’t be waiting if there wasn’t already a good plan in place.
“They’re all here? Redfly?”
Will nodded, his jaw tight.
“Fine” You said then, swallowing your pride and knowing you would regret it. “One drink.”
“One drink” Will repeated, his shoulders relaxing slightly.
“But Will,” You interrupted his budding smile and took a step so your faces were close again. “I wasn’t joking. Im not the shot I used to be. If we do the Recon and I tell you I can’t do it, that’s it. Im out. Full stop.”
Will blinked a few times as his eyes drifted down your face to your mouth and back up, his eyebrow twitching.
“I understand, Mol” was all he replied.

okay i know in the grand scheme of things it’s been about 5 minutes since i got into spn and about 4.5 seconds since i started following spn blogs on tumblr but i just want 2 share some stuff re: what i would have liked to happen in my ideal ending. spoilers below.
number 1, sam and eileen endgame. after losing her in 15x18 and trying so hard to hold it together, sam’s quite obviously devvo’d. man’s a mess but he can’t let himself fall apart. 15x19 happens and everyone chuck disintegrated faster than communion wafers comes back and the FIRST thing sam does? calls eileen. high tails it out of there. speed limits who? there’s a heartwarming moment. maybe an ‘i love you’ or maybe not but it’s touching and heart wrenching and everyone cries and it’s nice. there you go, sam winchester. not only did you help save the world, but you got a happy ending in the process. eileen moves into the mol bunker. don’t @ me. she’s also great with miracle. and, in the long run, kids.
number 2, deancas. my whole thing is, if they didn’t want canon deancas ending, why have cas confess? like i get the empty deal and i understand ‘happiness isn’t in the having, it’s in just being. it’s in just saying it’ but... if u didn’t want people to swarm on the possibility of deancas... why include it at all? especially for it to never be mentioned again. for cas, a man/angel/being of celestial intent that had spent like... 12(?) years at this point in sam and dean’s lives. you’re gonna tell me they just... let him sacrifice himself and then dip? ok. seems we have been watching different shows. or the same show from different perspectives. so, hear me out. dean says it back. maybe not in as many words or he pulls a hans solo ‘i know’. okay so they beat the shit out of The Literal Abrahamic God later to supercharge jack faster than shotgunning three monster energy mango locos ever could and leave chuck belly up in the mud like the invertebrate he proved himself to be and jack is Thee God now and dean just straight up asks. give that to me. give me the “please, jack.” and dean, so close to breaking, holding himself together with nothing but pure strength of will and residual adrenaline. give me jack’s reluctance, give me his admission of not wanting to mutate into the same megalomaniac chuck proved himself to be,using the winchesters as chess pieces in his own game. give me his humanity. the parts he inherited from kelly. give me his humanity and his grief and his loss and—castiel was his father, for fucks sake! he lost a father and a mother and he’s about to lose the only family he ever had. yes, he’ll be omnipresent—a perk of the job—but he’ll never be there in the way they want. so let him do this. there’s like a whole genesis parallel, you know all ‘the lord said let there be light, and there was light’ only not as on the nose as that. jack’s one selfish act before he himself, combined with amara, ascends. he does his whole speech. i’ll be in every drop of falling rain etc etc and then he dips. only, he’s gone and when dean turns around. cas is there. boom.
there’s no kiss. no explicit ‘hello look at this confirmed gay angel and his human hunter ??sexual friend making out’ because that too much too fast. dean has spent the past 15 seasons trying to unfuck himself from the damage john winchester left behind (the nun hunt on his 17th birthday? lebanon? i will meet john winchester in the pit.) and as close as he is to finally just allowing himself to be himself, he’s not quite there yet. but the relief on his face. the—i’m gonna say it—love in his expression. cas’s confession clearly affected him, just look at 15x18. maybe dean doesn’t know what that means yet. maybe he does. but there’s a hug. an embrace. one of those that says ‘i don’t know why or how i like you, fruity little angel man, but i do and i’m not letting go’. it lasts a beat too long. maybe there’s tears. i’ll leave that up to jackles jacting joices.
number 3, michael sacrifices himself to save adam. OKAY SO THE WHOLE MICHAEL STORYLINE IN 15x19? BULLSHIT. especially with the adamichael scene in 15x08? where it is canonically confirmed that, after spending a real life decade (which is OVER ONE THOUSAND YEARS in hell time. 4 months = 40 years so 10 years or 120 months = 1200 years) trapped in the cage together, they became friends and shared control of the vessel. michael considered adam his guide on earth. michael. MICHAEL. M I C H A E L. seeing how spn painted him as one of, if not, THE most powerful and fearsome angel? man’s whipped. and then he loses adam when chuck has his thanos snap moment. imagine sharing a vessel with someone for twelve. hundred. years. and then being completely alone in a world you don’t know. how maddening for there to be only silence in your head. the fact that they then rammed this bs of him being jealous of lucifer for being ‘daddy’s favourite’ was exactly that. bullshit. no no no, my friends. michael was playing his own game; crossing the winchesters for chuck but actually, crossing chuck for his own gain. he learns of the winchesters plan to utilise the fact that jack is the power hungry equivalent of a shamwow and uses that to his own gain. i haven’t figured out the particulars but when chuck beats the shit out of michael, he kills the angel but leaves the vessel (think like jack at the end of s14). michael the winchesters think michael died a snivelling god fearing soldier. and then, when jack does his whole thing, up wakes adam. the winchesters take him in and explain what went down when he, you know. and adam lets them know that no, michaels not like that etc etc he did it for me etc he did it to save me. michael’s fall was imperative to the destruction of god. and, for that, he will always be remembered. adam’s not a hunter, but he stays at the bunker anyway. he has nowhere else to go.
number 4, episode 15x20. what do you mean dean and sam both die? not in this universe i carry inside my head they don’t! this episode is just a bunch of scenes from throughout the years. you might think it boring but i think it’s great and this is my post so u can’t tell me what 2 do. dean opens up a bar for hunters a la 14x10 and has pictures on all the walls of all the fallen hunters and friends that have helped them throughout the years. you want a picture on the wall for a friend you lost? sure! just bring a photo and tack it on up there. out of sight, kept to the wall of the office, they keep pictures of the non-humans that helped. it’s private. a reminder. sam and eileen stop by a couple times a week if they can. jody and donna make the rounds with the girls too if work allows. or they come on their own. the girls are old enough to take care of themselves now. claire pops in when she can, always bringing a present for cas (despite him reprimanding her for doing so) and dean is always happy to see her. she doesn’t text enough.
sam sets up the bunker as a base for hunters again, trying to get a system up and running like before where hunters can check in and get help and use the weapons and resources they have for cases.
they don’t deal with heaven anymore. they haven’t seen jack since he disappeared but they also haven’t had any angel troubles either. maybe it’s because there are so few. castiel helps a lot as he still has his grace—although he’s still unable to teleport and he seems to be aging, trapped in some kind of space between. not angel and not human and definitely not nephilim. he’s powerful and powerless at the same time. he doesn’t complain about this, knowing what it means. it’s a kindness.
rowena is also on side, mostly, although she has her own gain in mind always. they have the stray demon that pops up every now and again but she– uh... prefers to make an example of them using her own methods. sam has learned not to question it. she teases him incessantly, as usual.
also, stay at home dad sam. eileen jumps back into hunting. they’ve had conversations—arguments—about it before. he doesn’t want to turn into his father, driven mad chasing mary’s ghost if something were to happen. she refuses to even entertain the thought of that. yelling “you are a lot of things, sam winchester. your father is not one of them.” and at the end of the day, there’s a mutual trust there and he knows she won’t put herself in unnecessary risk, and he 100% roped dean in to jumping on as backup if and when she needs it. the kid(s) are raised love and cherished and surrounded by family. sam also learns how to sign one handed with a baby on his hip. it’s adorable.
anyway we never have to find out about heaven because no one dies thank you for coming to my ted talk.
#spn#i don't wanna talk about it but i do#was gonna put this under a cut but am not a pussy#anyway if you can't tell im a dean coded dean girl

Feel free to ignore this but can you tell us more about Mirio's family in MoL? Does Mirio get along with his siblings? Is Neito more or less of a brat being actual royalty (on one hand, he presumably has less to prove but on the other, power can go to one's head)?
*vibrates a completely normal amount* why yes yes I can do that, just under the read more
So Mikuni is the queen, and she's got a blessing that she can turn her body to diamond. It's about as bad an idea to try and use most knives on her as it is on Mirio but you know since people still tried. She's a good leader, and most of her worries are about if she spends too much time away from her family, or too much time with them away from work. Naomasa is under her employ as... I guess 'spy' is the best word for it. She was a young teenager when Toshinori became the Dawn so at the beginning she was like, awwed and looked up to him but now she knows him and his secrets and is consistently *this close* to press a retainer on him, but she knows that'd just be a waste of energy in the end.
Antero was a noble but sort of a middling one? The Togatas were elevated after he married Mikuni tho. I try to keep him the same vibe as Mirio's regrettably unnamed father in canon, who appears to be a single father- and he does spend more time with the kids than Mikuni- and also told bitty Mirio "yeah this thing could kill you if you aren't careful but I'll still help you work towards it and be honest so you can do it as safe as possible" like we stan the supportive parents.
Before Mikuni was chosen as queen, people still figured she was the most likely to get it, and other nobles weren't ecstatic that Antero married in, and also didn't consider his blessing to be very royal. The issue persisted when Mirio received the same blessing, so 'spite' is just a bit of his motivation to make it more powerful, but he also sees it a bit as his duty to everyone else to get stronger. Hakamata was the one to figure out that by weaving his hair into clothes, he finally stop losing them.
Neito is in a bit of a hard place. Ever since he was four years old, people have been split on what they expected of him. One faction thinks with his blessing that can Reflect any one else's from all Light source, he should go into the clergy. Another think he's more clever/cunning than his older brother, and favor him to be the next king. That group tends to think that Mirio should be offered candidacy as well, because then he could trade in his useless blessing for the Might. Still another thinks that Neito would be a better candidate as his blessing would make a better offering to the Sun. And that's before counting the aspirationeers who like kinda want Sun to take over and count Neito's blessing as a good omen, or all the little parts of court who want to snag his hand for one of their children.
So, Neito is 'more important' and getting way more mixed messages here then in canon, which helps in a few ways for him to be a bit less bratty, but gives him different issues instead lol. He copes for a while by having very very shallow friendships and flirtations, so honestly his friendship with Hitoshi is his first real one, and then Izuku later. He really does look up to Mirio, but the problem is it seems everyone does, so Neito fluctuates on how he sees their friendship. Kinda like most sibling relationships but amped up lol, but he and Mirio are actually closer than Mirio and Illidio or Asuto are.
Illidio is prince number three! He's got a similar blessing to Mikuni, can turn into sapphire. He's actually the most like their mother, which only causes problems because that just means another faction who favors him for the throne. He's responsible for his age, if a bit prone to getting lost in a single task for hours. He's like, eleven or twelve rn.
Asuto is the fourth and final prince. He's a sweet little bean, too good for this world, too babey, etc. The only one of the boys to not be blond, and pretty much escapes the other issues of expectations and such. About six years old I think but I don't think I've actually picked out a blessing for him yet lol. Might be Permeation as well.
#neito also likes painting#but he shines (heh) in stratagem#at some point a character will develop a puppy crush on Mirio and Neito's eyes will glaze over in 'this always happens' but he'll laugh too#i mean he's probably still a bit of a brat and annoying to some people#but it's a different flavor of bratty and annoying than in canon#'does he want the throne?' he doesn't even know what he wants but he recognizes that that would be more work than prestige#i suppose he's just afraid of being forgotten#it's ok to ask me questions it actually helps me put these worlds and characters to words so thanks#mol#anon#pocket talks to people#my fic

an undrafted fanfiction
“Ooo-kay, we’ve got hot dogs, we’ve got popcorn, we’ve got nachos, and ooh they had Airheads, four for a dollar. I got us each a mystery flavor one. Y’know for nostalgia reasons. That and they’re still like the best cheap candy around.” Kira couldn’t help the snort of laughter as her friend rejoined her on the scuffed up metal bleachers, arms filled with a mess of food from the little stand over by the picnic tables. Molly was already more in her element than Kira was thanks to three older brothers and a lifetime of sporting events but that was okay. She was pretty sure she could get by just fine from what little she remembered from her childhood viewings of The Sandlot. A foil wrapped hot dog was handed to her along with some ketchup and they both settled in to watch the last couple innings of the game. “Y’know I’ve missed concession stand food. It’s just kind of the best in the worst possible way.”
“You do remember we’re getting dinner after this with your family at your insistence, right?” Kira asked as she took a bite of the dog. Molly just shrugged and started work on the nachos as she scanned the guys on the team they could spot. It was comical to see the 5′10″ beanpole that was her roommate going to town on the junk food like she hadn’t eaten in a week despite the full spread breakfast that had been in their kitchen that morning. “Keep going like that and you’re gonna puke, Mol.”
“Stop mothering me and figure out which one is the cute neighbor.” She felt her cheeks heat up at the comment, the whole reason they’d actually dragged themselves down to the ball fields even though it was hot as balls out and neither of them really had any major interest in baseball. It had been just over a week since the first time she’d met Patrick, the awkwardly cute guy in 3F and Molly had been teasing her mercilessly ever since. And they’d only spoken twice. Once when she’d had to retrieve said pain in the ass roommate from his apartment after she came home from a bachelorette party three sheets to the wind and insisting that his apartment was actually theirs and the other time when she’d been trying balance a bag of paint supplies and a ten foot long roll of canvas into their building and he’d been kind enough to help out. That encounter had led to a mention of the summer league and now they were sweating on hot metal bleachers on their Sunday afternoon.
“I dunno, he’s on the team in the red. He didn’t tell me his number or anything.” That was the team currently up to bat, number 42 at home plate and one strike away from being out. That much she remembered when it came to how the game worked. The strike came, followed by what she guessed was some grumbled swearing and a polite scatter of clapping from the crowd.
The nachos were gone by the next batters second swing and it left Molly free to look at her with an expression of mild disappointment. “Seriously, K? ‘He’s on the team in the red’? What kind of bullshit is that? You got his skinny ass to carry your canvas all the way up to the fourth floor and you didn’t even find out what his number was? Not even the name of the team? Have I taught you nothing??”
A couple of heads turned as the blonde’s voce rose an octave and her hands were thrown dramatically in the air. Thankfully it had been years since she’d managed to be embarrassed by the more over the top tendencies of her best friend. “You’ve taught me plenty - how to make French toast the proper way, the difference between a French braid and a Dutch braid, and the perfect right hook for when a guy gets handsy at a bar. I feel like you’ve successfully educated me in a variety of ways.”
“You’re hopeless,” she groaned with a roll of her eyes, making her way down the bleachers with the popcorn bag and a look of determination.
“Where are you going now? If you get anymore food, you really are gonna hurl.”
“Ha-ha. Hilarious, Baker. Don’t mind me, I’m just gonna do all the work for you and figure out which one of these is your man.” And then she was off, leaving Kira alone on the bleachers with a handful of other spectators to watch as number 20 managed to get on first base. By the time she’d finished her hot dog and had started nibbling on one of the mystery flavored Airheads, there’d been another out and another guy on base. They didn’t seem to be too terrible but she was also basing her knowledge off a children’s movie from the 90s. Molly came back as the next batter stepped up, a big grin on her face as she pointed to number 15 at the plate. “That’s him! K, that’s him! Your boy’s up to bat.”
“He’s not my boy,” she reiterated, despite the fact she perked up when she recognized his profile as he glanced back at the umpire. “How’d you figure that one out Houdini?”
“Oh, I bumped into his dad. Super nice guy, his name’s Brian, we chatted. He was more than happy to point out his son, especially when I mentioned that there was a lovely lady in the stands here just to see him play.”
Kira blanched at that, eyes wide as she looked over at the blonde. “You didn’t. Please for the love of all that is good, tell me you didn’t. I’ve talked to this guy twice, I don’t even know his last name, please tell me you did not just make me look like some weirdo stalker baseball groupie to this guy’s dad.”
“Oh lord, will you chillax for like ten seconds. You’re gonna give yourself an aneurysm if you keep making that face. I was perfectly chill about it. Told him we lived in the same building and he’d been super helpful and we were here to show our support and appreciation. Happy?”
“Fucking ecstatic.”
“And it’s Murray, by the by.”
“What?”
“His last name. It’s Murray. I asked and you’re welcome.”
“I hate you.”
“You love me.”
“The love has faded.”
“STRIKE THREE! YOU’RE OUT!”
The conversation had been enough to distract them both that neither had actually seen any of Patrick’s time at bat. Not any of the pitches or swings or strikes until the umpire made the final call and they both focused back at the game at hand. He stood there for a moment, stiff as a board before stomping back towards the dugout, shoulders tense. And before either of them could blink, he swung hard, letting the bat go flying straight into the metal fence in front of where his team was sitting. Both girls jumped at the sound it made when it hit, eyes wide as they could easily hear a long succession of “fucks” being yelled as the rest of the team made their way out onto the field.
“Ho-ly shit,” was all Molly had to say as they watched carefully, following him as he left the dugout and headed to the outfield.
“No kidding,” Kira mumbled under her breath, nibbling at the Airhead with her eyes on him.
“Cute neighbor’s got a bit of a temper.”
“No kidding.”
“...is it just me or is it kind of a little hot though?”
“No, it’s definitely not just you...”
author’s note: okay so this is like an excerpt of what could potentially be a longer story if I can stay motivated and people are interested but yeah, I’m obsessed with Undrafted and Joe’s portrayal of Patrick Murray and this is actually something I really had fun writing so I hope you guys like it.

cardinaleyes(.)tumblr(.)com/post/159285484974/cardinaleyes-cardinaleyes-cardinaleyes ----Have you seen this what do you think meta amazing person?
Ha! Um… I’ve been saying for weeks that Mick’s similarities to Cas are surface level. But from the very moment we first meet him, he’s even visually opposite to Cas:
He changes his coat to match Castiel’s, but that was all surface level stuff… until he had his moment of doubt in 12.16, I wasn’t sure if he was even going to earn ANY sort of redemption. And the fact he kept the truth about Magda to himself, and didn’t even TRY to come clean about that with Dean because of his precious “Code” I knew any redemption he earned was going to be via death.
He sealed his own fate, you know?
Cas, all along even throughout s4, HAD DOUBTS. He knew he had his orders, but he struggled with them, and that struggle only got harder for him. In 4.20, when he’d found out the truth about what his superiors plans were for the apocalypse and releasing Lucifer, he’d tried to tell Dean but got dragged back to heaven for reprogramming before he could. Then it took him less than TWO EPISODES to break through that fresh programming and rebel completely.
I mean, MICK NEVER STRUGGLED WITH ANY OF THIS.
He’d been “programmed” by the MoL since he was a KID. When he was locked in a room with his best friend and told only one of them was leaving that room. The other boy tried to reason with him, that they should run away, but he didn’t want to go back to his old life… and he killed his friend. I mean, this is the mindset he’s lived with most of his life. Obedience to the Code.
We have to assume the rest of the MoL have a similar background.
So I agree with Dean’s reaction face to the thought of going to these people’s version of Hogwarts. It’s like Hogwarts under the rule of the Death Eaters, ffs.
(The wishes turn bad, Sam. The wishes turn very bad.)
Sure, at the last minute he couldn’t do it, or knew if he DID try to kill Eileen he’d be dead too before she hit the ground. Like Sam and Dean would just stand there and let him kill her… But he did try to defend Sam and Dean, and did begin to see there were great gaping holes in Toni Bevell’s reports on them.
He was SHOCKED that they knew about the nephilim. He showed up at the bunker thinking he was about to drop some A+ top secret intel on them… and they were like, “Yeah, so? We’ve been working on that problem for months while you guys were trying to figure out what was even going on.” He knows they have resources the MoL can only dream of, not because of their network or their tech or their Code, but because of who they are.
He sees they’re not useless, at least, and tries to defend them, and of course he has to die for it. For simple disobedience.
This notion that I’ve seen floating around that Ketch is now in line for “redemption” is equally baffling. HE IS A MONSTER. A MONSTROUS MONSTER. He shot someone he’d been at least acquainted with since they were at Kendricks together. I mean we saw what Kendricks social life was like, and Mr. Top Of His Class probably got there by murdering all the other students, but yeesh.
And he didn’t even flinch about it. They just went about their business stacking up all the Winchester files and blithely discussing their impending executions while Mick’s bleeding corpse dangled off the other end of the table… I mean… do these seem the actions of someone with ANYTHING worth redeeming in them?
If anyone working with the BMoL is gonna earn redemption, it’s gonna be Mary. Because right now, she is one of them.
Mick and Mary have both been paralleled to Cas this season, in different ways. And now Mary has been “partnered” with Ketch. Mick even lampshaded their partnership in this episode, telling Sam and Dean not to worry about her because she and Ketch work so well together… I mean…
Mick represented FAILURE #1.
I think Ketch’s true nature is going to be revealed and he’s going to represent FAILURE #2.
Which leaves it up to Mary to be the SUCCESS. And it’s gonna hurt like heckeroo, because you are watching Supernatural.
Because that’s the rule of threes.
These aren’t parallels to Cas in the “what happens to one is foreshadowing what will happen to the other.” They are using pieces of Castiel’s history to give us insight into these characters. And most of what we’re seeing is that they in no way actually live up to Cas.
If they did, Mick would’ve lived.
As to Ms. Hess being a Naomi parallel, again super dark mirror. Even Naomi repented in the end and acknowledged she was wrong. I don’t think the Dolores Umbridge of Kendricks is gonna repent.

Mary is the best mother figure they could wish for
Hear me out.
Mary, by her absence, through her choices and ultimately NOT being what the brothers ever hoped she would be is leading them to some deep inner questioning, which is what they both need to move forwards if not what they want.
In the end this is exactly why Amara / TBTB brought her back, because as we head into the endgame era there are things that need addressing that only be addressed from within. With Dean ‘sublimation’ Winchester and Sam ‘repression’ Winchester it would take something BIG to force them to do this. And it doesn't come much bigger than their mom, narratively, in the show.
DEAN ‘sublimation’ WINCHESTER
Dean’s inner demons centre around self acceptance. I have written a whole other post about Dean’s self worth here but basically Mary and Cas are key to this for him moving forwards (and are mirrors of each other this season).
A key indicator of his self acceptance is the break down of performing!Dean which we are seeing so much of in s12. We have not just a whole episode dedicated to slapping us in the face with the fact that this exists (for those who don't do subtext) in 12x11 but they even TELL US OPENLY that sublimation ‘is kinda his thing’, on top of so many snippets where he is letting his true feelings show. OK, so its now CANON that performing!Dean exists. Why? To tear it down.
And what was a huge factor in performing!Dean? His emulation of John. So having Mary around is definitely going to have a huge impact on this story.
1. Mary has already forced Dean to really think about how he feels towards her and how hurt he is by her actions. You can practically see the inner dialogue in his eyes at some points in s12.
He’s standing up for himself, calling her out, practically saying out loud that he thinks he DESERVES BETTER!
And yes, he did ‘apologise’ to her at the end of 12x14 but really he's not vindicating her actions but acknowledging that he didn't put her in the right ‘box’ in his view of family. She had to call him out on it for him look within himself to figure this out.
2. Cas has been a key component of Dean’s overall arc since his FIRST SCENE OF THE SHOW (and arguably was planned to be a key component since the pilot once he took over Anna’s planned role).
“Good things do happen, Dean.... What’s the matter? YOU DON’T THINK YOU DESERVE TO BE SAVED?”
I mean, since their FIRST MEETING Cas has been validating Dean. He understood Dean’s lack of self worth within 2 minutes. I can't WAIT for this to be bookended and I would love it if they paralleled it properly, something like Dean asking CAS “you don't think you deserve to be loved?”.
*OK I've stopped sobbing now, moving on*
So Cas is key to Dean’s self acceptance and also eventual Destiel in the obvious way through his sexuality. Even if you don't ship them or believe Dean is queer just allowing himself to be loved in the platonic way as family by someone who CHOOSES to (as per 12x12) is incredibly important to Dean’s self worth, especially when linked to Cas’s own overall arc of ‘falling for humanity’ because it’s DEAN who made him rebel, avert the apocalypse and choose humanity.
I love how Crowley often gets my Dean-feels going (often his lines really hit a spot for me in terms of Dean’s inner dialogue) and his famous ‘I deserve to be loved’ moment really hits home for me. Dean should and WILL I am sure at some point either say this specifically or have it said to him. I wonder by who...
Mary and Cas are both key to Dean's self acceptance arc. Currently not only is Mary a s6 Cas mirror but they are incredibly interlinked and probably will be even more so when the supernatural / BMOL / Mary story comes to a head.
SAM ‘Repression’ WINCHESTER
Sam’s inner demons centre around self forgiveness. He still struggles with feeling like a monster (even though he knows he shouldn't), he has tried to be cleaner than clean, whiter than white to cleanse himself (e.g. with food), and it’s especially clear this season that he is holding back from other people, often hiding behind Dean (eg. phone calls etc).
Sam’s self forgiveness can also be split into 2 overriding narratives.
1. Accepting and forgiving the grey areas of the supernatural and specifically the supernatural within himself (e.g. past psychic abilities, demon blood).
Mary has already twice narratively shifted the blame for Sam’s demon arc onto herself away from Sam:
12x2: “how can I face Sam after what I did to him”.
12x12: *flashback to YED Ramiel*, Sam: “what have you gotten us into?!”.
2. Forgiving himself enough to work with other people again and see himself as a leader.
Mary and the BMOL are key to this. Sam is a MOL and Dean is a Hunter, thats always been the narrative since s8. A happy place for Sam is running the MOL, a new, moral type of MOL with a dog, a girl, maybe even kids and trusted people all around... eating a hearty meal instead of a salad...
Blake Snyder’s Beat Sheet
(thank you @floralmotif and @elizabethrobertajones for this excellent reference and inspiration to put my thoughts into a hopefully coherent post! So, we are now on act 3 since the literal vanquishing of the darkness of act 2, dark night of the soul).
Endgame speculation based on the return of Mary below the cut.
Concisely Act 3 consists of:
1. A new start/inspiration/catalyst: MARY. (Symbolism: Sunrise after the Darkness).
2. The main character(s) incorporate the newly found theme learned from the catalyst into their fight. (Speculation: defeating the season’s (13-14?) big bad thanks to their newly found self acceptance and self forgiveness. Dean using his self worth and parts of himself he previously didn't accept and perhaps Sam using some supernatural element rather than repressing it or a group of people e.g. US MOL)
3. Final Image: Opposite of Opening Image (finale v pilot)
SAM would have NO demon blood/supernatural left in him OR he would accept the supernatural side of himself as positive (perhaps as a psychic / witch?). Given other ‘free will’ / grey area themes of SPN it would make more sense to have him accept the supernatural in a positive way.
A reversal of leaving school, his friends and a dead Jess to go hunting, alone with just his brother - would have him back in a scholarly environment with other people and likely a ‘new Jess’.
Dean would have his abandonment issues addressed and let go of performing!Dean, actively not trying to emulate his father and letting go of his toxic masculine facade. He was so very alone at the start of the show - ‘abandoned’ by his father and feeling lonely before dragging Sam back into hunting. To reverse this he needs to have someone choose him completely, putting those abandonment issues to rest.
I am completely convinced that Amara’s point was to bring Mary back AS THIS CATALYST, to be this tool for the start of act 3. The pain will be worth it in the end :)
#mary winchester#is an actual character#but also is a catalyst#tagging destiel#cos i dont want hate on this post#isn't that sad that I feel the need to do that#cos the whole point is how much I love all these guys and want them to be happy#and feel like thats where we are going with this in season 12#Sam Winchester#supernatural season 12#dean winchester#supernatural speculation#destiel#massive speculation

The Memory Remains: Recap
Then:
Mary Winchester keeps flipping the script on what we all expected in season 12.
Now:
Tomahawk, WI
(Hey! Boris spent many a summer camping on Lake Tomahawk in her youth. V. glad she didn’t know about the god of sacrifice lurking about.)
Speaking of youths not knowing what evil is lurking. Several beer-drinking, canoodling teens sit around a bonfire, enjoying the night. One friend is tired of the scene so he takes off. He walks down a dark road, oblivious of the masked mouth-breather stalking him. He comes across a backpack, and picks it up, instantly getting strapped to a tree, and coming face to face with a goat-monster. His buddy, barely hearing his cries above the music, investigates.
Not reaching his friend in time, he high-tails it out of there.
Meanwhile in the bunker, Dean has been worry pacing, worry calling, worry gun cleaning, and probably worry praying to Cas for DAYS. he leaves him ANOTHER VOICEMAIL. Sam tries to reassure his brother that Cas is fine --he always is. Dean bought into that crap last season, but it doesn’t seem like he’s biting now. Something’s up and Dean is extra upset. (So say we all.)
Sam gets an email from ghost Mick. There’s a case! It seems that the mysterious happenings in the cold open are a trend. People have gone missing every year since 1898. They stopped in 1997, but now they’re starting again.
The boys make it to northern Wisconsin in record time, and stop in to interview the local law enforcement/taxidermist.
Sheriff Bishop gives them the lowdown on the missing person, Jarrod. He doesn’t seem too concerned with the whole situation though. There’s dead animals to stuff, people! And anyway, Jarrod probably just blew town --his home life isn’t the best.
Agents Stark and Martell then go to interview Daryn, the friend in the cold open. He’s “medicating” on his break at the meat packing plant, and is upset that Sheriff Bishop won’t believe him. The kid tells Sam and Dean about that night and “Black Bill”.
Later at the diner, Sam fills Dean in on the local urban legend that is “Black Bill”. Dean is busy overcompensating for his confused feelings about missing Cas, and starts flirting with the NAMELESS imdb says her name is Carmen, VOICELESS prop waitress. *rant commences* I mean, ok, this feels weird. We haven’t seen Dean act this way IN YEARS--like season 3? 4? My headcanon is that he’s just really messed up about Cas and so he turns to his favorite vices --beer, burgers, and sex. Not cool, but cool, y’know? My big issue with this whole thing is that this is the only woman in the episode and she doesn’t have a name and she doesn’t have a voice. Yuck. Even if we follow the crumbs to a deeper meaning for this, the surface reading just makes me feel like I, as a woman, am not a wanted audience member. They’re dudes being dudes doing dude things. The woman is an object of conquest and her agency means nada. *rant over*
Dean tasks Sammy on figuring out what the monster is, and subtextually spends the night with the waitress.
Daryn, meanwhile, is working away and is surprised by his boss, Pete. He hasn’t been giving it his all at work. Pete knows how upset he is about Jarrod, but he can’t keep using that as an excuse at work. Later, Daryn’s leaving work and the goat monster finds him and attacks! (Boris wonders if a lot of episodes this season take place in Wisconsin because Vancouver had a rather snowy winter? Wisconsin did not have a snowy winter ironically.)(Boris also doesn’t scare easily but appreciates the music this week. It’s trying!)
The next morning, season1!Dean wanders into the diner to talk shop with Sam. He steals his brother’s breakfast plate of egg whites and veg --but isn’t that impressed with it. Sam thinks they’re dealing with a satyr. Sam wants to interview Daryn, but it appears he never made it home the night before. They head to the meat packing plant instead. They interview Pete, who informs them that Sheriff Bishop owns the plant. He’s “heir to the Bishop meat empire”. Kinda like the Abe Froman of Tomahawk? The boys connect the dots and think it’s a mighty big coincidence that their only witness to the crime goes missing at the local sheriff’s meat packing factory. The sheriff just happens to be on site so they talk with him --about the missing boys, and about “Black Bill”.
Sheriff Bishop is just as blasé as ever, dismissing their concerns about “Black Bill” and the staggering levels of missing people. I mean Pennywise is getting jealous with how many people are missing in this town!
Cut to Daryn chillin’ in the plant’s freezer. (I’m so punny.) Daryn finds the very frozen corpse of his buddy, and hears growling. He runs for the door, but the horned monster attacks!
Back at the diner Dean continues to pour his frazzled worries into eating a burger.
^^^ I love this culinary tribute to the SPN blood cannon ^^^
Sam is appalled. “Burger’s beef, bacon’s pig, Soylent Green’s people, but this...this is heaven.” (Pining Alert! Dean’s thinking about heaven!) Anyway, Dean’s research revealed that all the vics were employees at the plant. It seems that this local legend is connected to the plant --or the Styne family that runs it. Sam’s research revealed that this whole town was founded by the Bishops and the sheriff has been selling off their property over the years --everything but the plant and the family estate.
Ketch and the gang break into the bunker. (Ok, so they have a key, but that doesn’t count!) “Remember your orders. By the time we leave, Dr. Hess wants to know everything about our ‘friends’ the Winchesters.” The music is jaunty but I just felt dread watching this.
The boys head to the family estate to check it out.
The interior of the house is full of sheet draped furniture and the rooms are still, quiet. Sam finds a door with several door locks on the exterior which leads to a dark basement. They head downstairs and - oh joy - it's decorated in high torture chamber chic with weapons, carving knives, and chains all around. An angled metal table stands in the middle of the room. Sheriff Bishop arrives at the house, creeps his own way down the basement steps, and Dean surprises him with the Colt leveled at his head. Dean asks him about the “straight up murder room” they found.
Black Bill isn't real, Bishop admits. It's been his family kidnapping and murdering people all along. His father told him the story of Moloch, the god of sacrifice, who lived below his house and exchanged the prosperity of their family for human blood. (Query: isn’t every god in this show technically the “god of sacrifice”? That’s like saying “I’m Dean Winchester, human.”) Every year the man of the house would don a goat mask, kidnap someone, and kill them. When his father died in 1997 Bishop put an end to the chain of killings and kept Moloch, starving, in his little cage in the floor ever since. Sam peers into the cage, bars covered with blood and matted hair, and reports that it is empty. Ruh roh. Upstairs, something clatters. Dean heads upstairs alone, armed with the Colt.
Dean stalks through the house quietly and tracks the sounds to the second story. The camera cuts to Goat-mask cam and Dean finds Sir Goatsalot standing alone in the middle of a room. He slowly approaches the unmoving goat suit when he's attacked and knocked out by another, non-masked man. It's Pete, the besieged plant manager! After knocking out Dean he runs downstairs and Sam and Bishop get dead-bolted into the basement. Bishop hands Sam a butcher's knife to chop his way out of the locked basement. (Hey kids, remember: when bolted behind a door, always take out the hinges first.)
Back at the Men of Letters bunker the crew investigates the boys, taking photos of everything, rifling through drawers, downloading data. In Dean's room Ketch finds an old photo of Mary holding wee Dean and stares at it for a while.
Dean wakes up in the meat plant, plastic-wrapped to a chair, and greets Pete who reveals that the Sheriff is his half brother. Their father was a notorious philanderer who let his illegitimate child grow up poor while his other family thrived on the other side of town. (Boris interjects: Anybody else getting an Adam vibe with all this talk of brothers and family business? I guess this is all a parallel to the Winchesters --and possibly Mary selling her family’s legacy to the YED?) Now Pete’s in control of the god. You know. “Hunting people. Killing them. The family business.”
Pete's gonna save the town with his awesome pet god and pad his own pockets to boot.
Back at the bunker the MoL goon squad has turned up nothing useful – including nada on the Colt. (Yeah, dudes, it's because Dean brought it with and then promptly had it confiscated by some tool in Wisconsin.) Ketch plants a giant-ass bug under the table with a little antenna on it. DUDES. Stick that thing somewhere less obtrusive, OMG. All the Winchesters have to do is drop a pen and they’ll find it.
Now locked in the cold locker with Moloch, Dean wheels himself around in his chair, scoping out the hunting grounds. He sees the creature snatch one of the bodies and unwraps himself from the chair. Then he grabs a meathook to defend himself against the approaching beast. Outside the locker, Sam has tracked Dean's cell phone to the plant and is in turn stalked by Mr. Goaty McGoatface (aka Pete).
Outside the meat plant Bishop tackles the Goatinator, who accuses him of dumping the crappy, failing plant on him and bailing. (Moloch approaches Dean, stalking him through what must be the largest cold locker in the history of mankind.) Pete aims the Colt at Bishop but Sam shoots him dead and grabs the Colt. It's a good thing he does because Dean has just buried his meat hook in Moloch’s side. (Moloch: hee hee that tickles.)
It’s looking grim for our Dean Bean, but Sam shoots off the lock, opens the door, and blasts Moloch with the Colt. Moloch liquefies. Gross.
Bishop tells the Winchesters that he doesn’t need help with the grim cleanup. He'll take care of his family's dark legacy.
The boys arrive back at the bunker. “Next time you hear me say that our family is messed up remind me that we could be psycho goat people,” Dean mutters and heads straight for the mini fridge in the library to grab a beer. The boys then proceed to have AN INFURIATING CONVERSATION.
Dean: What do you think our legacy will be? You think folks will remember us?
Sam: No. I mean. Guys like us, we're not exactly the type of people they write about in the history books.
Me (fake coughing): The Winchester Gospels.
Me (more fake coughing): Probably a ton of hunter journals.
Fandom: GAAAARG.
Chuck: GAAAARG.
Sam concludes that the people they saved are the Winchester's legacy. Dean wonders about the fate of the bunker once they die. He pulls out his knife and carves his initials into the library table as the scene flashes back to their childhood and carving their initials in the Impala. It’s a pretty scene and blatantly hammers home the point that they consider the bunker to be their home now. Boris speculates that this means they’ll lose access to the bunker soon and, I mean, it seems pretty possible. (Boris: On a completely practical level, I don’t think they’ll really lose the bunker because that must have been one expensive set piece, and how many years does this show have left? 2? Would they really scrap something so useful and expensive in the waning days of the show? My heart says they want to hurt us; my head says $$$. Also, I love this meta by @mittenmorgul)
They call Mick to debrief. (I’m annoyed that they call him when they get back to the bunker. Not, like, while they're still in Wisconsin. I realize that’s for narrative effect and so they can use the newly planted bug. But still.) Ketch answers and informs them that Mick's gone back to London and they are to report to Ketch instead.
Natasha: Sighs. Hasn't it been strongly implied that Ketch is just some high class hunter? I thought the MoL liked to keep the firewall between hunters and the Men of Letters rigid? Or are all their hunters goons in suits? (Makes handwavy argument that Ketch is just running a long hunt on the American hunters so he’s allowed by the MoL to call the shots.)
Anyway, at that news Dean rolls his eyes. “I would much rather be with your mother,” Ketch says.
After they hang up Ketch stares at the photo of Mary he purloined as Dean bitches to Sam about Ketch through the bugged connection.
You Goat any Quotes?
Work smarter, Sammy. Not harder.
Oh c'mon. This guy's adorable. Plays a friggin' flute.
Maybe they just run an evil petting zoo inside.
Croquet's alright but you know what would be great? Murder.
“How you feeling?” “Like I just went twelve rounds with a god. So, you know, normal.”

Character Questions: Hard Mode
(( what can I say? a typical Darcia, ty mols x,) @damnshems ))
17. What was your character’s favorite toy as a child?
Not sure if that counts, as it is not a toy per se, but when they were young, he and his brother were gifted some (very light) bokuto (bokken/wooden training swords), even before their actual training had begun. Needless to say the boys were very excited and from there on often found play-fighting whenever they could with them. Still a fond memory up to this day, even though Kaede is long less reckless than back then.
26. How does your character behave around children?
He tries to avoid having to deal with children as much as he can. They are, of course, unreasonable and often loud or hectic…. he knows that is perfectly normal, but that does not mean he wants to deal with them. If necessary, he’ll be as kind and patient as needed, but always reserved and distant towards them. Much to his own surprise, when his brother’s daughter was born he found out that this does not apply to kids in his own family appareantly.. as he treated her just as caring and gentle as her actual father did.
29. What did your character dream of being or doing as a child? Did that dream come true?
There never was something like a dream he strived to achieve, in that sense. Kaede was already born into a Yakuza clan and always knew his brother would one day be the leader and he would be at his side - that much was crystal clear from the start and he never much branched off of that path, or felt the desire to rebel. He was fine with things being that way, saw it as an honor to work for even… Of course he certainly didn’t dream of things turning out with most of his family dead by the time he was barely 30…
43. Has your character ever had a dependent figure who was not related to them?
Yes. There of course have always been men like bodyguards or his father’s right hand men who were with the family since the sons were little kids, but the most important person aside from them and several instructors was probably his Iaido- teacher. Not only because Kaede liked the swordfigh lessons, but also because this man had a lot of .. other influence on him when he grew older. (I need to write more on him another day, because this small part doesn’t do him justice, but for now know Kaede certainly did not learn to become a Kinbaku master all by himself and self study….)

Ideas
Right, so i have oodles of ideas... can picture some of them... Need to figure out the sequence. Need to get the outlines and mindmaps together.
Crud lol.
Idea 1 (already written but could do muuuch better - story Five in my Sam’s Love Story Series) - Jessica Moore Returns and Sam Winchester is in a Relationship with another woman. Yeah... nice and angsty... could be much angstier than what I have written.
Idea 2: Demon!Dean :-D Dean has adopted a hell hound (oh my god the angst) and Demon!Dean fathers a child. Ohhh this could be such a treasure trove of angst and plot. Maybe part of my aforementioned series
Idea 3: Dean has a twin... who turns out to be related to Garth Fitzgerald IV through adoption! OMG, and this twin is a frigging FED! I mean, what the hell could go wrong? Bahahahaha. Okay, so he’s a former FED who is wanted by the government... might have the NSA pick him up, pardon him, and make him an Agent there... but Bahahahaha... so much sweet, sweet angst. Another one of the aforementioned series.
Idea 4: Sam and Dean have been hiding some pretty massive secrets... *cough kids cough* who aren’t exactly human... and the Men of Letters go after their families and just... Mary ends up in the middle, her maternal instincts finally kick in and it’s like... WTF. This could get fluffy and angsty at the same time. This would NOT be related to my other writings.
Idea 5: Two young hunters come busting into the present from the future and they turn out to be Sam adn Dean’s sons... or a son and a daughter... or something ... and this could prove hilarious. Not related to anything else
Idea 6: Sam and Dean have to, with the help of some others, gather some Weapons that were made by Chuck or Amara or whatever, before they fall into the wrong hands, and end up imbibed with the powers of those weapons... like angelic or demonic powers or something. Yeah - still thinking about this one. May do something where they have to gather these objects and become angels in the end. Not sure yet. Unrelated
Idea 7: Castiel has a girlfriend? Or he has a kid he’s been hiding for a long, long time... or both? I’m not sure yet... been turning the gears on this one in my brain for a few months - haven’t decided where I want to go with it. unrelated
Idea 8: Amara created an angel of her own before being locked away, and Chuck hid from him that he was her creation instead... but something has been suspected since the Angels fell that he was different... and maybe, just maybe, he doesn’t need a vessel... like... she was trying to appease Chuck to get him to pay attention to and love her again by creating this angel and he locked her away anyway before discovering her creation? Unrelated (maybe)
Idea 9: Right, so I did an unrelated fic where Crowley was Sam and Dean’s birth father. What if, and this could prove hilarious, but what if Cass turned up as Sam and Dean’s father which is why they were chosen as Michael and Lucifer’s vessels? Like John was Cass’s vessel at one time and Mary didn’t know it. I don’t think the ones who are all for Destiel will like this... but I see them more as family than lovers (I don’t ship destiel). When I say family, I mean like brothers. unrelated
Idea 10: Right, so what if the whole thing with the MoC didn’t happen, and after the Garth incident, Sam and Dean went their own ways... and Dean ended up falling hard for a werewolf and having a kid with her... and then somehow Mary was brought back and ended up working with the MoL... and yeah... or even Mary AND John were revived somehow... and don’t realize the woman they tried to kill was Dean’s wife... nor that they placed their grandkid in danger? unrelated
Idea 11: Sam and Dean have long lost kids? Like, the darkness had totaled the Impala or something, Sam and Dean got separated, and Dean and Sam were having problems finding each other... and maybe Dean was injured enough to need medical attention... only to be found by his daughter... unrelated (of course)
Idea 12: Sam and Dean are reincarnations of the original Men of Letters - two men who started the entire thing... actually, i started this one a long time ago in another form and it ran out of steam - just am not sure where I want to go with it. unrelated
Idea 13: Dean manages to shut the Gates of Hell after a fight with Sam - ends up reviving a year and a half later... and... I’m not quite sure where I want to go with that either... Like, I’m really not. unrelated
Idea 14: Sam and Dean have hidden that they are Government Agents from each other for almost forever but find out about it. unrelated
Idea 15: Mmmm... there’s just something about Dean having been a Marine that I kinda like, and Sam doesn’t know about it... like hunting is actually a Marine Black Op, and Dean is the head of the operation and stuff... and go through and explain his severe, severe, severe fear of flying... like while he was on tour or something, his plane went down or something, and his ... unit? Platoon? I don’t know which one to go with, is being murdered for their connection to him from something that happened during one of his tours while Sam was in college? Alright, so I’m a sucker for an NCIS crossover story - from the days of Ziva and Tony. unrelated
Idea 16: So I’m a sucker for a Dukes of Hazzard crossover too - and the show is NOT racist (if you think that, you’re a bigot because some of the most beloved characters were black! The flag was not used in the racial context, it was used to represent rebellion against a corrupt legal system which is WHY Robert E Lee fought for the South is he thought the US legal system was corrupt and although he did own slaves, he was considering releasing them before the war broke out. Lee was first choice for the Union Army General before Grant... well that and Lee was from Virginia and was loyal to his state as was common in that day). *clears throat* anyway, now that that is out of the way - Sam and Dean time travel back to the 1980′s to save a Nephilim or something, and said Nephilim eventually ends up transported to the present time or sometime within the Supernatural timeline... yeah, still thinking this one out :-) unrelated
Idea 17: So Bobby hired help, and is unaware she is a bad ass hunter, and she ends up saving their asses when something gets loose on Bobby’s property. Still formulating this one. unrelated - could be come another series like the other series?
Idea 18: Purgatory ends up spewing its guts, and Benny Lafitte returns... yeah, still trying to figure this one out too. unrelated
Idea 19: Sam or Dean is suffering mental illness... just because... like addiction or something. unrelated
Idea 20: Right, so this dates back to the Human!Impala phase that went around Tumblr... but... what if the Impala had the soul of a woman trapped within due to a witch’s curse? Nothing romantic... more a maternal thing toward Sam and Dean. unrelated
Idea 21: Criminal Minds crossover :-D Goes back to the whole secret agent idea where Sam or Dean is an FBI agent and the other doesn’t know about it. unrelated
Idea 22: alright, so this is a Lifetime Movie Ripoff, and I think someone else hinted at this idea too but - Jessica Moore was having an affair with another man, Sam had a very large life insurance policy, and Jess wanted it, and maybe she framed Sam as someoen who he wasn’t and after her death, the guy thinks Sam murdered her due to all the lies, and goes a hunting for Winchester? unrelated
Idea 23: Okay, so, uh, Twin!Dean idea with my Twin!Dean OC where Cole Trent knows Dean’s Twin and something happened to Trent’s wife and son or something and Trent starts hunting and teams up with his old USMC buddy? My OC btw, is exMarine and FBI or NSA depending on the fic. unrelated. Still trying to figure this one out.
Idea 24: Right, so I’ve written stories like this Twice already, but there’s just something that doesn’t get old about Dean Winchester having a siamese twin and finding out about it lol. Like... maybe make a series of fics about Dean Winchester having a Twin brother?
Idea 25: Mary ends up finding out a friend was tossed from the 80′s to present day... like a girl she was mentoring... and said girl is involved with her youngest son... with a nice angsty hunt mixed in for good measure.
Like... God I’m awful lol.
And some of these are pretty damned unique ideas that I have YET to see in this fandom.
This is why I let my characters guide me in writing and coming up with ideas.
But this is faaaar too many ideas and I will probably never write them all. Some of these ideas, I’ve had on the drawling board for a few years. Some of them I started writing with a friend but never finished.
Like... Honest... and this isn’t even all the ideas I have!!!!
So what are everyone’s favorite ideas listed here??? (reminder: I do NOT write smut or Reader Inserts or for real living people or Destiel or Wincest or Sam as Gay or Dean as Gay even if I do poke fun in some of my unfinished stuff that I abandoned... well, you get the idea... and I do write Charlie as a Lesbian if and when I try to write her).
If you use any of these ideas... I WANT CREDIT.

9x20 rewatch
@justanotheridijiton sent me a reminder that there are at least some small ways this isn’t as terrible as it could be, I think:
Of course Mel could have just been tormenting me by making me read the whole script right after I watched this..
There’s no recap on this, and we jump right in with jazzy music and a city skyline.
I think one thing that was interesting about this was that with the right premise, this could have been a pretty great way to branch off the show, by taking it into the city as a permanent location, since the source material is very very rural. Along the way in this rewatch (and bearing in mind that this episode was eventually coming) I’ve talked about how Taxi Driver and 8x15, among others but mostly Buckleming, fuck up the show’s aesthetic by going inner city or delving into settled subcultures of monster stuff or just generally bringing in an urban fantasy slant to what is basically a cowboys vs monsters show. It really doesn’t fit :P This could have been a fascinating way to explore how to make the same aesthetic FIT. But as I mentioned, the above episodes plus years of drifting since like, season THREE, have taken us so far from the show’s original aesthetic/genre it’s hard to analyse this as a shift and more like an inevitable grim outcome, which doesn’t taste as good at all, since there’s not much sense of subversion of the source material going on (because this needed to happen like 7 years ago at this point to work like that) and sadly even Dabb, who has been demonstrating with season 12 he CAN subvert the story from its origins, could not pull off the work needed to salvage this idea from the trainwreck concept...
Anyway before I dive in, all the dreading watching this episode made me think a lot about genre. There’s a difference between episodes which are set in cities (e.g. Dean going to Death to stop him wiping Chicago off the map, or the MotW we’ve seen that have city settings) ... Urban Fantasy had a big trend of popularity in mainstream culture, soaking up a lot of themes I noticed, which I guess was really hitting its stride around season 8 & 9 (this is based mostly off my window on the world but it did seem this was totally in line with the amount of urban fantasy I was seeing discussed or stories I came across - my friend who had been churning through dark fantasy romances started lending me urban fantasy novels instead :P). But yeah, not like this show hadn’t gone corporate or done stuff in cities before, but they didn’t really make a big deal of being in cities? This being filmed on location allows them to use the waterfront skyline as an establishing shot and to play with the city as a location, and to develop those urban fantasy ideas.
Obviously, urban fantasy is popular and interesting and there are some brilliant stories in the genre. But it’s not Supernatural’s area and the best it does with cities is when they are a sort of landscape or vague presence, but the alleys and dark nooks and crannies and dank little hotels are the sort of ways they can use the city as a fairly “rural” setting in the sense that people aren’t around or it’s on the fringes without engaging. Even stuff like the Leviathan storyline is often dealt with by visiting warehouses and complexes which seem to be on the edge of towns - Charlie’s skyscraper job I think was the only time they actually went inner city, and again that was a change of genre to a heist movie one off (which worked well with the themes of the season but moving further and further from horror because even as a gimmick it’s dropping the format completely for a major plot episode)
As soon as a city landscape is more than 1 lonely person walking in a dark alleyway with something bad following them, but starting to explore what the city MEANS or how the supernatural takes up residence in it as a sort of landscape feature instead of a horror that’s not meant to be there, we’re in to a sort of genre-shift where the themes of urban fantasy take over from the horror (and SPN really struggles with being a horror show still from season FOUR onwards, and from Carver era, basically just gives up anyway :P It has horror-y episodes within a different sort of framework entirely.)
In Urban Fantasy it’s always about the people and cultures. The good stuff basically feels like it takes you on a walk around the city and shows you stuff you see all the time but with new eyes - turns random things like graffiti and gargoyles into fantastical elements and adds a mythology and magic to stuff you interact with all the time. It sort of invites you to go to the city and look around you and think that some magical underworld/otherworld is existing right alongside you. And it’s a LOT more about the sort of awe and intrigue of that and the normal coming up against the paranormal in an exploratory way. Including subcultures of monsters living among us or just out of sight or with a sort of speak-easy secretiveness of their lives.
That is a major trope to mark the genre and as Bloodlines is a new show, basically, it actually does get to USE these tropes honestly. Like just looking at it as an urban fantasy, it does the job. It just happens to fit in a trend of pretty unlovable SPN episodes by Buckleming exploring deepest this genre shift in the Buckleming way of totally failing to sell it, so the history of urban fantasy on the show has been tainted by the only writers who actually were interested in it enough to start messing with genre in that way. It just... I don’t know, doesn’t *feel* good mixing with the other elements of Supernatural. This isn’t a formal essay :P
I still can’t think of other Urban Fantasy spn episodes that aren’t Buckleming, because they love their witches and messing around with developing that lore. I suppose season 10′s teasing of Men of Letters vs Grand Coven would have been a more urban fantasy story and stuff if there was any actual development of it like 8x12 also plays on these tropes, with a secret society in the middle of the city, so other MoL related episodes do similar (though, like, 9x16, Cuthbert’s house is in the middle of nowhere, deliberately). The BMoL’s little snippets of life in Britain are similarly in this trope so we have Urban Fantasy style enemies in season 12... Hm. Hi Dabb :P Anyway since Carver era the show’s completely shed its original genre save for in the MotW episodes, when it comes to format (I saw it best described as action-adventure) and setting (hi Bunker as a home base instead of Bobby’s or dusty cabins & decrepit houses) and feel (so garish) and I guess it’s interesting to look at the way this has changed. (I am not so fascinated with this idea that I’ll do the rest of the rewatch analysing everything by these standards, but I guess I’ll keep on mentioning it when the show goes in this direction and eventually have a clearer list of episodes with this feeling to explore...)
Back to Bloodlines... They make a good start by having an actual city here, and apparently meaning to film on location and to use it in the story.
Sadly then pretty much everything else in the premise lets this episode down, as far as I remember, and, well, the entire world judged it when they watched it. :P I think I stumbled once across a confused and sad Tumblr user who really loved this episode and wished for more, and I think there’s some really good points like the main character being a black kid, that WOULD have made it a good show and worth a chance, but... eh, the story didn’t have any bite to it. It wasn’t picked up. And now it sits in the middle of this season like a lead balloon.
Starting with, the kid having his girlfriend fridged in the first scene in typical Supernatural style, because of clinging to the old tropes and trying to replicate the old show on top of the new one. This is something I saw described repeatedly as the biggest weakness with this episode - especially coming in season 9 carver era fatigue about the emotional loops (that will only get more tiring), people were just not interested in repeating the same old story over and over... When this aired I was still reading reviews and articles more than fandom to try and figure out what the reaction was supposed to be, but I seem to remember a pretty universal agreement here :P
This does, however, give us our first “in” on examining wtf Dabb is doing... He has been sitting fairly quietly since he joined the show and honestly when I joined fandom I saw posts explaining who he was and why he would have been the right pick to take Bloodlines away if it had been picked up (and no one had noticed he’d already written I guess at that point the second most number of episodes of anyone but Gamble, who he overtook some time in season 10 and is of course still going strong :P) - a lot of the writers like Robbie and Edlund and Carver were discussed fairly often as well as constant mentions of Kripke and Gamble. I found it pretty amusing that 3 years later people were still having to explain who Dabb was when he suddenly got handed the entire show, never mind any time one of his episodes came up and everyone was like !! who wrote this!!!!
Anyway, this is really giving us the example of how he works with mirrors and character re-use and basically repeating elements of the old story anew and as Mel says, “the only certain things in life are death, taxes and Dabb mirroring himself”.
And THAT is relevant to the story now, because now he has his hands on it, and ALL the story belongs to him, everything is picking up the old elements of the story and subverting them completely. The deeper we go into season 12 the more the old story is pretzeled in on itself... (I’m so in love with this article, and read the stuff after the initial episode recap, listing like 30 Cas episodes and how 12x10 references and subverts their themes and events...)
To get back to this fridging of Tamara, I don’t know if it was lesson learned here reading all the complaints about re-frying the show for Bloodlines, or he was just able to be more clever with the trope since it was already established and waiting to be flipped, but since Bloodlines starts with a fridging, Dabb era officially starts with the great un-fridging of Mary, which this moment is mirroring, by giving up a protagonist with the appropriate manpain to be a lead in a world running on Supernatural’s rules...
Makes you wonder how Bloodlines would have gone if the woman hadn’t been "killed for narrative symmetry” but been allowed to be her own person - gone through everything with the guy, and generally existed alongside him subverting the rule that women are for manpain... >.>
Having to use Home of the Nutty because I never downloaded this episode to have a personal copy to not have to fuck around with DVDs to get gifs and screenshots, but:
They have a blue and a pink screen above their heads, colour-coding them. It’s obviously hideously cishet to label them blue and pink for dude and lady, but with all the more subtle pink n blue colouring often around Dean (the wall in 10x05) or stuff like the blue and pink diner in 12x10 which I’m still chewing on, I kind of like the plain text version of this. Possibly because this episode is such a keycode to other things in the show like the ridiculous Destiel parallels, setting up basic visual information in Easy Reading mode is pretty amusing to me.
Ennis goes to talk to the restaurant guy to do the typical ring in the champagne thing. Despite seeming to know him, he’s brushed off rudely when some monsters show up and they’re going to their private section of the restaurant (a splitting of the two worlds - Ennis in the muggle one) and he sees a glimpse in the mirror of a monster (I assume the body guard is a wraith because mirrors and messed up faces). Mirrors also being the portal between worlds, and Ennis has had his first glimpse that something is not quite right - is now someone who is “marked” by the supernatural for having now been given his first little hint the world is not as it seems.
This actually reminds me of 6x01, where Dean was slowly eased back into being a hunter by hearing nothing more than a scream and going to investigate it - while doing so he passed through a lot of dust sheets which metaphorically stood for the same thing - the veil between worlds that Dean was going to move from the normal back to the supernatural
We then get the little intro to the supernatural as it exists in Chicago. They have an established subculture, various types of monsters all coming together to enjoy this goffik atmosphere. Enoby would love it here. :P There’s even a vampire biting a willing victim (dude vampire, lady victim. keep on playing those tropes literally straight) which feels right out the imaginings of a Twilight fan. This is also where RICH monsters go. I suddenly am thinking of a serious class divide - these are monsters who can afford to come to a fancy establishment, are probably all connected to these monster families who run the city some way or another and have the relative luxury to behave as themselves in large gatherings and to create a subculture. A LOT of the monsters Sam and Dean meet get by on very little, have abandoned places as hideouts and generally are grubbing around on the streets for a meal. These monsters can afford to cover up that they eat people, and can buy in to this society. Sleek clubs are a world of difference from the grubby bars that hunters make their homes away from home.
So, again, feeling nothing like the show we normally watch, and many of the types of monsters prettied up. The shapeshifters use magic to change their appearance and it’s clearly a high society type of monster because they’re not messy, they can change at will in a very slick way and not depend on copying other people, so they are allowed a sense of self - a flexible one, but one that they can make their own, nonetheless. The alpha shifted this way, so I would suspect to even remotely try to connect them to the show’s lore, their family must be shifter royalty, close to the alpha in, well, bloodline, and clearly doing something to preserve that purity and magical transformation. They probably disown their kin who transform in the gross way - who knows, maybe some of the angry, violent shifters we’ve met in the past have been rejects from this family, angry about being shoved out into the world without any support? :P The first shifter we ever met back in 1x06 was particularly angry about rejection and lack of belonging and feeling like a freak.
Anyway, just more ways in which these monsters are so far removed from the ones that made Supernatural what it is. They don’t have the sort of raw, honest angst and existential horror about their monstrous-ness that they should. They don’t personally FEEL monstrous, in that outcast and lonely way. I think the shifter, who DIDN’T have to kill to eat, but killed anyway, was a good way to explain a lot of the monsters on the show - any of the ones that embrace killing, even if it’s not overtly spoken, it’s because of the way they’re made to feel like monsters. Any that can get away with blending with humanity (I just watched 7x03 for example) have a choice to try and find a way to live within society (like the vampires in 2x03, all with night jobs, living peacefully) and even then being a monster sets them apart and presents them with difficulties, especially when hunters are drawn to them by accidents or carelessness and they have to defend their right to exist in society...
In 12x09 I was flipping out about how Dabb is so great at establishing side characters (and I was thinking about a lot of the interesting ones I’ve passed in this rewatch as well) but yeah no not here. This shifter and werewolf are presented as jackasses and then everyone’s fighting because the slashy hand blade guy comes in (I can not remember which other fictional character he blatantly ripped off now but I remember seeing on my dash the comparison and it was embarrassingly direct :P) so there’s no investment here because, well, despite showing us there might be a more interesting world of monsters, these guys were not it. And now they’re dying and it’s like, so?
Ennis attempts to propose to Tamara and it’s really sweet and pretty corny and typical romance. There’s not much reason to be invested in them either, which is all the more obvious when Tamara is literally a throw-away character as the bad guy chucks her aside and she bangs her head so it’s not even TARGETED fridging, like Mary and Jess were so obviously killed by whatever the main story would be.
Also because the last 2 episodes I watched were 12x09 and 12x10 I have now watched 3 episodes in a row where a black woman gets killed >.>
Ugh
Like, tiny good thing: if this had taken off, it would have been a show with a black lead. Who is really cute and giving it his all.
But. Meh. Fuck that trope >.>
Anyway, blah blah introducing the uninteresting shifter bloke who is the stand-in Dean. He’s at college but doesn’t feel interested in studying so he steals the answers - all laid back and fun until he gets a call that there’s been a death in the family to drag him back into all their drama. Sort of season 1 Dean swapped with Sam’s place, if you squint. Way too rich :P
Some shipping between Ennis and David would have been cool - Ennis has the mysterious last words from David’s brother to lead him to him, eventually, but there’s girlfriends everywhere, that message was ABOUT Violet.
Season 12 has laid it on thick with the inter-species forbidden love nonsense for angels, though, that this was originally paralleling Dean n Cas. Guess Dabb has a thing for it :P
ENNIS I know what I saw.
DETECTIVE FREDDIE COSTA And you're sure? I mean...sure? 'Cause, what you're tellin' me... About this faceless whatever-it-is?
ENNIS That thing had claws.
FREDDIE Look, maybe you got confused. You know, maybe -- maybe it was some banger with a knife.
ENNIS I know what I saw.
FREDDIE I am trying to help.
ENNIS By calling me a liar?!
This exchange is pretty stupid when you consider a black kid being cross-examined by police. He does know them - the guy references his old man, and I’m vaguely remembering was his dad a cop? So he might be a bit more comfortable with them, but he’s still in a dodgy position, and arguing that it was a “thing” is a terrible idea to “invent” a monster because it just makes him look suspicious.
However it does fit the trope that Ennis is suddenly really credible to monsters after seeing a few things, and now is in that stage where he’s still freaking out about monsters maybe being real. He has to hold onto the memories of what he saw - he can’t question it or lie because he needs to preserve the memories properly, so he doesn’t think he’s gone crazy. Because he’s going to investigate further and he knows holding onto the monster thing is the key to finding out what REALLY happened, and the authorities dismissing it is dismissing the best lead they have.
This of course does fit with the season 9 theme of narratives and stories, because it turns the whole “non-existence” of monsters into a narrative people tell themselves to make them feel better, and certain people discover the “subtext” - the literal world of monsters living hidden beneath our own - and now read the world completely differently. People deny the monsters exist, don’t pick up on the clues, ignore the subtext... And people like Ennis who suddenly discover how to read into it, or the Winchesters who are always searching for cases intentionally reading between the lines to find monsters...
In this case the Urban Fantasy mode of hiding monsters overlaps completely with the horror way that Supernatural uses them, so these are compatible worlds. The genre shift is really like, looking at it through a different lens. Interpreting the same subtext in a different way, but still, importantly, seeing beyond the surface layer.
Blah blah Ennis has messed up history with his father, hey guess what fitting the profile nicely :P
Sam and Dean conveniently show up now we know everything we need to know about Ennis to let him interact with the bridge between 2 worlds. Dean dismisses the cop by telling him they just won’t tell him what they’re investigating - refusing to let him in on the story.
We see Sam and Dean from the outside eyes; if you never saw this show before they’d just be weird FBI agents with implausible names who swooped in, took a statement, and swooped out: the suspicious enemy who are probably going to cover it all up (if you still think they’re FBI and have those sort of resources :P) They also listen to what Ennis has to say but then dismiss his story too - “there’s no such thing as monsters” Dean tells him (which is ironic for where Dean is at too). Of course there’s the 2nd level at work that we all know who Sam and Dean are and that this is just drawing attention to the fact another story is at work, a knowing nod that there’s a subtext at work here.
The next scene also establishes that the detective also knew about monsters, so now we know Ennis is being played by multiple sides, all telling him that there’s no such thing. All motivation that he has to get to the heart of it because he KNOWS he’s been lied to. The cover up of the world of monsters is the real plot tension at stake, because of course the first step for a muggle human hero in these sort of stories is the discovery phase, so he has to reach this sort of block at first, where he’s made to doubt.
I suppose it also makes Sam and Dean shown in a light where they’re no better than the monsters; everyone has a stake in keeping it from muggles - whether to protect them or to stop the monsters being exposed.
MARGOT Yeah, you'll what? David, come on. You don't want this. You ran away to be a human. You always had a soft spot for 'em. Look, you're out. Stay out.
David being paralleled with all of TFW here. He leaves the family for several years and now the dad is dying... They’re trying to mimic Dean’s carefree yet sensitive swagger with him, and of course it wouldn’t be Supernatural if the “good monster” didn’t have a massive soft-spot for humans and wanted to be like them and live like them, so parallels that endgame for Cas.
In the love story he parallels Dean, though, while at the moment the Sam and Cas stuff is most obvious, of course he ends up mimicking the 6x20 scene from the Dean perspective. There’s a brief mention of her, establishing David was in an inter-species romance and that she’s now being married to someone else. At the moment in the end of season 9 Dean and Cas are in a weird place - I wouldn’t say a break up like some of their others, but Cas is also answering a call to help his family, gathering an army, and Dean is super weird about them. And of course, in a Dabb episode, building up to the “us or them” with Hannah, who was vaguely coded as a romantic threat to Dean in the love triangle - the jealousy was played off a lot more on his side than anything that happened between Cas and Hannah, in the long run. Anywho that’s all waiting to happen, so it’s paralleling Cas’s supposed split loyalty, which also, because of 9x18, we know he was already forced into.
I think the djinn should have been actually middle eastern but oh well way past the point of judging this episode - why am I even trying :P
Violet shows up wearing a heart pendant... wow subtle
(Too much heart etc)
(Mary parallels? She used to have a heart pendant, right? Before she started wearing the ring instead)
She’s also wearing cream, which is beige-ish.
Just to establish these are not nice people, her brother(?) tells her her job is to be silent and pretty. A token figurehead - powerful but only as an image they wield. Which I think is sort of what Metatron does with Cas, because 9x14 showed him he couldn’t beat him down or have him subservient to another angel - he had to be in charge. But Metatron was in charge of the story, so Cas just had to look pretty, play his part, and Metatron would handle the rest >.> Cas is currently “ensnared” in this since he answered the call at the end of 9x18.
Ennis walks through the city looking around vaguely suspiciously - maybe wondering who is a monster or not around him. The whole transformation of the world part, where he learns to see it with new eyes and to open his eyes to the fact it could be more than he’s noticed before. Perception is the key, and this makes a GOOD follow up to 9x18 telling us how to read a story.
He goes for the gun, obviously already seeking revenge, and discovers silver bullets - his father kept them, a first sign that he is Right and monsters exist coming from an authority figure he ACTUALLY trusts.
(And in the wider scheme, also reminds us that in this world there are a lot of law enforcement who one way or another learn about the supernatural and carry on enforcing the law but with juuust a little extra knowledge to help them out)
Unnecessary flashback of Tamara dying is unnecessary. Thanks Singer. This kid playing Ennis was selling it really well without that being randomly inserted in his Sad And Lonely Revenge Look
Do the authorities know about the massacre? Did they just... Ask the people at the restaurant what happened and they were like, nah, just that random guy who staggered around outside and died, nothing to do with us, and the police never investigated?
The owner comes in with a mop and bucket. No CSI for monsters :P
I like that Ennis has changed into a camo jacket - nice symbolism about becoming a soldier on the path to being a hunter and getting revenge.
Awww he wastes almost all of his dad’s silver bullets. They don’t work on vampires, mate.
Dean making fun of the food supplies they stock of parts of humans to eat. More monsters being normalised, having a structure to feeding and therefore a supportive subculture. It’s almost like how we eat meat without knowing the animals it came from personally. In both season 6 and 7 the idea of humans as herd animals for monsters to eat was a threat, briefly with Eve, all season with Dick. Turns out organised monsters in cities have been doing it all along. The difference is it’s already in place, instead of the potential horror of it being done. I’m really not a vegetarian but try looking at it from that perspective of a cow walking into a meat cold store :P
Blah blah getting the monsters talk from Sam and Dean. Dean is flippant about killing the vampire but doesn’t seem super weird about it because there’s no time for the Mark of Cain arc, Ennis just gets to think Dean is more of a dick than he might have
Ennis now at a crossroads to become a hunter, do the whole revenge thing, or just go back to his regular life (which he says is ruined, in that whole “burn everything down to motivate the hero” way that, as I said, was really rubbishly done to be convincing here. Like yeah he lost his girlfriend but it’s not like how Sam got shoved onto the road :P Failing to match up to the original story by just being not very committed to character drama over world building... I also think there’s just no developing the dynamic of the characters soon enough - Sam and Dean were back on screen together almost immediately after the title card. They had the whole pilot to show us their development. Now we see tiny establishing scenes for each of the characters and even Ennis’s journey is pretty weak, and it’s just not enough)
SAM Ennis, listen. I get it. Believe me, I've been there. But what we do? It's messed up. So do yourself a favor and stay out. You can get hurt, too.
Wow. Powerful incentive. No showing, just telling :P
Anyway NOW Ennis and David are talking, or, Ennis is yelling and waving a gun. David is Mr Exposition so their actual character dynamic building is pretty low. I suppose it mirrors after Sam stops the “intruder” in 1x01 they have a good long talk about how their life works for the sake of exposition, but it felt much more natural than “what are you doing in my room” “there are 5 monster families running the city...”
David and Violet stand and stare at each other and get really sad.
VIOLET Is the real butler okay?
DAVID He's resting. Locked in a closet.
Thanks Dabb, yeah, this episode IS really heterosexual.
Thinking of which,
DAVID And I was there. Where were you?
Casually throwing in that old 6x20 dialogue between Dean n Cas. I think this would be less suspicious if there wasn’t another chunk of receycled dialogue somewhere else in the episode...
Anyway it’s interesting because dialogue snatching aside, rather than the context of 6x20 they’re talking about running away together to start a new - human - life. Cas was human this year and Dean ran off to see briefly but in the end they never got their act together and Cas was dragged back into the mix. Likewise it parallels all the times Sam or Dean ran off and made a normal life with Jess, Amelia, or Lisa, and took themselves out of the world of hunting. I was saying 9x09 quietly teased the El Sol go someplace better poster behind Cas when Dean was talking to him at the bar - the last time Cas was human and Dean saw him. Their chance to be together now just a dream. And it would have been a human life together.
This is actually effective subtext for this season on top of mirroring 6x20. Dabb IS good at this part :P
blah blah new characters save each other’s lives, still more concerned about girlfriends
“blah blah five monster families” (again)
*Dean makes fun of the concept*
DEAN And sometimes you got to work with the bad guys to get to the worse guys.
Oh hello the entire reason behind Dean’s downfall this season :P
Played straight here. Ennis is not in trouble like Dean is. We’re just ignoring the main plot.
I like that filming on location means that they can have exterior shots that capture the recognisable city skyline when they go to the grotty abandoned buildings places
DAVID I lost someone, too, okay?! But I'm trying here.
ENNIS I'm sorry about your brother. He spoke about you at the end. He said, "David, I'm sorry. I didn't have a choice."
DEAN All right, you guys can kiss and make up later. We got work to do. Come on.
I suppose Dean ships it.
The whole “I don’t have a choice” theme coming back around here. Justifying really terrible decisions and in this case being the reason that het!DeanCas aren’t together. Which considering this entire season has been just “I did what I had to do” followed by terrible decisions that keep Dean and Cas from each other, yeah.
Those lights with the cages around them are in the creepy guy’s murder basement.
He’s also, of course, a blatant Metatron mirror, once more trying to construct a story, in this case using the Cas parallel character to kick off a war -
IRV Why should I believe you? You're dead. Tomorrow, they will find pieces of you all over town. Oh, won't the doggies be mad?
VIOLET That's what you want. You're trying to start a war.
He’s also dressing up as a monster (in this case, the “good” guys since he’s trying to disrupt a status quo which is the second best thing to “no monsters at all” :P) and mimicking their kills; Metatron cosplays as Cas briefly, and of course disguises a ton of angel deaths as Cas’s work.
Werewolves would be a lot better on this show if they weren’t terrible. I mean, just because their powers are rubbish and filming Violet attacking this dude was painfully bad fight choreography. She kinda slow mo leaped at him and then sat on him growling a lot. David power-of-love talks her out of killing the weirdo. I guess her being overcome with rage is also a Mark parallel since this will be kind of how Dean stabs Gadreel and has to be restrained except that moment had dignity and tension (though I think Dean stabbed him in slow mo too, at least it wasn’t AWFUL slow mo :P)...
Anyway here’s a scene with a werewolf overcome with rage to go with the Garth story immediately after Dean gets the Mark, and 8x03 and 8x04 weirdly mirroring each other AND what is to come in a season and a half, and of course 10x04 being a back-to-business werewolf story. I can’t remember any others connected to big moments in this arc but I might have blanked them out, and there is a werepire right after Dean gets the Mark off and all that action dies down :P
Oh wow I forgot this ended with Ennis just shooting the guy. Yay revenge? There’s probably quite trite commentary here which this show dealt with years ago about actions defining what is monstrous and conveniently omits that Dean’s headed right into the cosmic toilet as a result of revenge missions, and there’s a very on the nose line:
ENNIS I only see one monster here.
The show always uses some other means to kill a human monster than a Winchester doing it (unless we’re going seriously bad places - Thinman anyone? :P) just on principle that killing humans is a bit more ethically dodgy; Ennis falls under that rule on THIS show but say this was the start of HIS show... already crossed a line. Oops. Seems like he’d also be falling in with the monsters anyway since this is a set up to be BFFs with Violet and David as the good monsters on his side who like humans and the natural order, buuut. It’s all pretty silly. These poor characters are under developed for the sake of later development, but don’t have any interesting hook to make them worth that development so they never got their show? I guess?
Ending all the actual drama such as it was with 6 minutes to spare, we now have the long conversation between Violet and David about their relationship. Here’s the bit where Violet shows up to run away with David wearing a trenchcoat. Subtle.
SAL 'Cause he's my little brother, Violet. It's my job to protect him. It's my job to keep our blood pure.
I somehow feel like this is calling out Dean somehow but aside from the obvious “big brother does terrible thing to protect little brother” that this season kicked off with that is being critiqued I’m not sure what the bloodline part could even be metaphoric for. Possibly you could ignore the “brother” part and look at it as Gadreel having Cas kicked out the Bunker (or, well, Dean doing it because Gadreel) to protect Sam, so he mirrors both characters here - the douchey big brother shifter, and being paired off against Violet with the romantic parallels.
Also amused about the angel lore from 12x10 and that’s pretty obvious now, but also I guess, wondering what would happen if a werewolf and shapeshifter had a baby. Could the 2 meet without knowing it, hook up, and produce a mutant offspring? - I guess I was also right about the shapeshifters being weird about their bloodline because I’d guess they’re always one bad match away from the sticky gross shapeshifters :P
Blah blah “David wants to go straight” blah blah “i love him”
blaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah
VIOLET I don't know. I should go.
DAVID Sure, right. That's what you do best.
Sure wish Dean n Cas kissed like that after saying lines like that.
Well they’d probably have a ton more chemistry.
They last-minute reveal a sibling for Ennis just in case (hey, a sister, who we never will see :P).. Now we’re clear of actually having to WATCH this episode I do feel bad we don’t have a show for them, you know, if we started again from scratch, ditched the monster war thing, and let them figure out being hunters in the city together >.>
*Dean dragged away from this silly story by Cas* Thanks, Cas, you saved them more times than you can ever know.
Always sad that was such a terse conversation but I guess Mark!Dean is the least likely version of Dean to answer the phone with an accidental “hey Babe” so there’s not much point lingering on their phonecalls.
Did they have to time that take waiting for a train, or was it just a coincidence? Train symbolism in season 9 is a thing.
Ennis goes off to get given a ton of main character nonsense heaped on him about starting being a hunter, wearing the ring of his dead partner around his neck, and since we weren’t done stealing elements from the early seasons, getting a mysterious phonecall from his (supposed?) dead father. I really feel sorry for that kid :P He did not deserve *gestures vaguely at everything*
