Hazewalker coming to Kickstarter for Linux, Mac and PC

Kickstarter campaign to launch on 15th October The term Metroidvania is thrown around a lot, possibly because it represents one of the most popular styles of game available; you play, you learn, and you triumph over obstacles with new abilities. When you combine action gameplay with exploration it can be a winning formula. The latest developer to toss its hat into this particularly crowded ring is TheoryForm Games, which is planning a Kickstarter campaign for launch on 15th October; it's announced that the project — Hazewalker — will include the Nintendo GamePad at the core of the decision, with the developer stating that's helped to drive it towards crowdfunding mainstays Linux, Mac and Windows PC; lead designer David Pierce is quoted as saying the following in the company's press release.
I want to bring Metroidvania games into the next generation. I want to redefine what people expect from these kinds of games. I’ve been excited by 'second screen' possibilities and the kinds of gameplay experiences they can open up since Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles on the Gamecube and Gameboy Advance. Imagine being able to look at your map, thumb through your character’s journal, or see your inventory in the palm of your hands; for me, that’s really exciting. We’ve just started to scratch the surface of the really cool possibilities this brings to the table. We are fully committed to an awesome, next-gen second screen experience, and Nintendo has been a fantastic partner to work with so far.
Based on the information available so far it looks like there'll be both male and female representations of Falken, the protagonist of the game. This could certainly be of interest to Castlevania fans, in particular, with Castlevania: Symphony of the Night cited as a particular source of inspiration.

Huntsville, Alabama – April 7th, 2014 – David “Chesko” Pierce, author of award-winning Skyrim mods such as “Frostfall,” has assembled a group of talented artists and developers to create Hazewalker, a Metroidvania-style game set in an original dark fantasy setting. Players will take on the role of a lone warrior who must journey into darkness to put an end to the Haze, a corrupting force that twists all that are caught within it into monstrous abominations. Hazewalker is slated to go live on Kickstarter in October 2014 with a fully playable demo.
Hazewalker will expand on the action-adventure and exploration gameplay mechanics that define classics such as Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. Players will be able to select a male or female character, experience visceral combat and branching storylines, choose and upgrade powerful abilities, improve equipment, and more. The game will combine stunning handcrafted setpieces with procedurally generated content to ensure every playthrough is unique and exciting.
Currently in development in the Unity game engine, Hazewalker will combine richly hand-painted backgrounds with fluidly animated 3D characters to produce a distinct, “living concept art” visual style. The game will feature cloth simulation by Cloakworks, advanced shader effects and atmospheric audio to deliver an unforgettable experience.
“Hazewalker is a story about hope, and the cost of keeping hope alive,” David said. “I can’t wait for players to be able to explore the world we have in store for them. We’re building something that I think is going to be really special.”
Hazewalker is being developed for release on most modern platforms. TheoryForm has posted initial details about the world of Hazewalker, including high-resolution concept art and story information, at www.hazewalker.com. Additional information and artwork will be made available on the site over the coming weeks and months.

Subplot: Hazewalk Spinney
For supernatural beings in today's world, the Narrows Mist provides one of the only sources of power. But for some, high demand is the mother of innovation, and the harbinger of inventive loopholes.
A largely innocuous piece of ancestral property, therefore aptly lacking in any unique name, Donshead Farm has been in the noble Donshead family line for generations. It is one of the only inhabited areas actually located inside The Narrows, though it rarely appears to be visited. Like most things on the outskirts of the town, Donshead Farm is guarding a secret.
The land that feeds on such a strange mist is sure to produce odd things. The rare orchids that have become another prized attraction for the city are one such example - the unique cultivar Hazewalk Spinney is another.
When consumed in any form by supernaturals, Hazewalk Spinney can have varying effects both positive and slightly negative, though it rarely seems to permanently harm anyone - save for those few with underlying allergies. The most desired effect it commonly produces, though, is the temporary extension of power outside of the Narrows Mist. In essence, Hazewalk acts as a battery for those who need to travel with their abilities as intact as possible.
Please note, this is our only subplot with a pre-reserved "Owner" role.
Subplots are entirely optional and will be driven by members after their starting point. Species lore does not have to conform to any subplot.
