Nox, The Ruler of Purgatory

Related to my first self-insert project for Hazbin Hotel, I want to share the HH version of Nox, who is an OC I’ve shared on my main blog. (Note: these are OLD. Below all the information is his current design)

In Hazbin Hotel, Nox is the ruler of the realm of Purgatory (which is where human souls not good enough for Heaven and not bad enough for Hell are sent in this project) which is ocean-based, hence the aquatic features he has.

Nox is mysterious and cryptic at the best of times and has a neutral relationship with the other two spiritual realms and their leaders. In fact he has a rather neutral take on everything usually. Which is needed when you are the one deciding where a soul goes…

Yes, Purgatory is often referred to as the ‘waiting room’ for souls. You are judged there, then sent to Heaven or Hell. A lot more goes into it than simply a decision, but once the soul gets to Heaven or Hell they have forgotten their time in Purgatory.

Purgatory is also the final resting place for most Sinners (and Winners) that have been slain by angelic steel weapons or holy power (AKA The Exterminations) This is a secret only Nox and Sera know about (at this time…I might change it if they actually have the guts to put God in this show) so to the rest, those souls are just gone. Erased from existence.

Sir Pentious was the first this didn’t happen to…Nox deemed him worthy of going back, but he had successfully become ‘good enough’ for Heaven. Was this a fair judgement? Maybe. Maybe he wanted to piss off Sera too, who knows.

Speaking of Sera…

Nox and her have history too. Romantic history. In the beginning, before Roo broke free and humanity was doomed and before Nox was assigned his role as Purgatory’s ruler and judge of souls, he and Sera were together. But after several tragedies occurred, one of which leading to Nox being sent to run Purgatory since human souls wouldn’t all get to Heaven after the apple…he asked Sera to come with him.

It was a tough decision, but ultimately she chose Heaven over Nox…and that may have made him feel less neutral toward her. He isn’t as hostile and petty about it as Adam is about his failed relationships…but Nox never forgot what happened.

Especially when he met Emily. The Seraph of Joy, who believed herself to be Sera’s younger sister…but Nox could see the resemblance to himself as well. He confronted Sera later, but she firmly told him that as far as Emily would ever know, Sera was her sister and Nox was just visiting royalty from another spiritual realm.

The dark side of Steampunk: Nox (Part 1)

There is this video made by the Youtuber schnee about Hazbin Hotel, and how its grimsical art style serves the purpose of forming the setting and dictating every writing decision through the usage of its thematic connotations.

It's a pretty interesting video to watch if you are a fan of that series, but I'm not here to talk about that.

No, I'm here to talk about a specific part of that video.

There's a certain timestamp in the video where schnee all of a sudden starts to talk about a movie named "Aeronauts", and how it perfectly nails the Steampunk aesthetic through its understanding of the themes of Steampunk and the historic/social connotations of his it's existence. Here:

For the purposes of his argument, schnee explains to us what Steampunk is all about and compares it to grim dark. While this was fascinating and all, after I've learned the meaning behind the Steampunk aesthetic I couldn't help to think about Noximilliem Coxen the Watchmaker from Wakfu, and how the show writers and character designers twisted the positive vibes of the style to create a more impactful and terrifying antagonist that swims confidently in his own aesthetic.

Today, I'm going to break down how Nox's story uses and twists the meaning of Steampunk to help him stand out.

There's going to be multiple parts to this analysis, so expect me to add their link in the future, but for now, I'm going to focus my attention entirely on the OVA episode and I'll tackle the main series at a later date.

The OVA:

Noximilien is a brilliant inventor specialized in the creation of clocks. His over excitement at the prospect of being the one to find the next big thing is very reminiscent of the classic Victorian scientist present in many stories, usually on the protagonist's side: at the start of his character arc, Milien is the embodiment of the optimism native of the XIX century from which Steampunk stories often take place.

Characterised by the industrial boom, Steampunk (Nox) seeks out to revolutionise the rigid lifestyle of the Victorian era through the wonders of machinery and science. This right here seems like the classic setup for any story of the genre, surely it can't vary more than this?

Unfortunately for our Watchmaker, this is the part where another genre of storytelling is introduced into the mix: the Eldritch horror.

Stories of Eldritch Horror are often characterised by the fear of the unknown: humans going insane trying to understand things that were never intended to be understood, some light ho######ia and ra###m sprinkled here and there, but you can't blame Lovecraft for being a bigot when he was so much worse than that.

Nox finds a mysterious object coming from outer space, it acts weird and suspicious, and he can't understand it, so he takes it back home where he can study it. (I don't know what the bubbles emitted from the cube and the following psychosis are meant to entail, but I think it's up to interpretation).

Immediately, Milien sees the cube as an exciting new discovery, already picking apart its effects on his clock and quickly brushing aside how it affected Igôle. It's honestly not that uncommon in stories of this genre, the inventor tends to be pretty self centered and not particularly emotionally intelligent, it's a flaw that tends to go undeveloped, but it's usually never a problem for these people (Unless they are the villain 🌚).

But here, it's where unfortunately the rift between his family and his desires starts to form: at the beginning of the episode, Galanthe was nothing but supportive of her husband's passion for his inventions and the future, but here, when she asks her husband to let go of his current hyper fixation, she, quite literally, puts a stop to the Industrial dream, one of the cores of this genre; basically rejecting Nox himself, whose the personification of Steampunk.

Naturally, Milien is at fault here, he shouldn't be taking her response too dramatically, but this is going to be the base to his later turn towards the obsession.

While we're here, I might as well mention the beggar and the puppet show.

They're not all that important to Noximilien's character arc (aside from the money problem giving him a ticking clock to all of his actions🌚🌚), but they do provide important pieces of character building and themes for our analysis, so I'm going to briefly touch on them.

The beggar and the puppet show serve to better establish and build up our Steampunk narrative before it can later be destroyed by the Eliacube.

The beggar, is our representation of society. More specifically, Victorian society. He's naturally unimpressed by Milien's creativity and ingenuity, and only seeks to get his part of the bargain. He's strict, rigid, and he's clearly intended to be the obstacle in this situation.

The conflict between the beggar and Milien parallels the conflict between the Victorian society and the positivity of modern science; said tension is the bread and butter of Steampunk and the reason why this aesthetic gained so much popularity in the first place.

The puppet show, created by our inventor, is, again, another establishing piece for our setting, it's the original direction Nox's character was supposed to take, becoming someone who uses their brilliance and generosity to better the world and brighten their family's lives.

If only Milien stayed in bed that night instead of going to temper with the Eliacube, who knows what could have happened.

Maybe, he wouldn't have found the Cube to be all that shiny when he woke up the next morning......

What did you base Alastors Nox Magia off of? Why type of magic is it and where did you get the ideas for a good ass fanfic?

The answer is sort of a long story that I suppose begins with my first exposure to Hazbin Hotel in general, during a particularly doomed D&D campaign where my character basically acted exactly like Charlie did in the pilot:

Granted, Fianna is not anything like Charlie at all, but the DM found it funny enough to send me the gif above and then everyone got distracted for about 5 minutes while they started meming.

The next day I watched the show and was completely hooked!

I started looking into the Wiki to get a greater understanding of the world shown, read the comics (like all 20 pages hahaha), and listened to Addict while working on prompts for Charlastor Week 2022, taking a break from my regular manuscript I'd been working on for a few years (stay tuned for updates soon on that one!). I had about a month so I decided to try my hand at smaller short stories, since some of the authors I idolize are so good at short fiction, and conveying strong emotions in just a few thousand words.

I watched and rewatched the Pilot, studying the characterizations there as well as thinking about funny and unexpected scenarios the characters could get into while dealing with the concept of redemption and how to make it work (needless to say that the fact that they already had it happen was... unexpected. I have thoughts on that but will put a pin in that for now to avoid getting too distracted from your question!).

I can't remember which rewatch it was that I picked up on an interesting exchange between Charlie and Alastor that turned into a whole mess that would consume me to this day:

She tries to put a limitation on his ability to do too much, and I wondered if that could lead to a sort of interesting power-play between them (because in the end this is the part of their relationship that is fundamentally interesting - they're both powerful people with opposing moralities, having to work together to acheive a common goal). Basically, because Charlie's not precise with her language, she ends up basically not controlling Alastor at all. Which works out in its way, because she hides from her deeper wellspring of power with the aid of a gentle persona.

I liked the idea of something deeper between them and within themselves - and with them being opposing forces, I wanted to work with the idea of Alastor being associated with "night" and "dark", versus Charlie being associated with "sunlight" and "rainbows".

Shadow and Flame, only a bit less Lord of the Rings and a bit more sexy.

Nox Magia , the "night" magic, follows basic arcane principles that I've picked up on through the long and involved process of being a massive nerd and reading a lot of stuff.

For writing magic, I like looking at basic logic structures and hovering somewhere between harder and softer magic. My other manuscript that is premiering this year will be discussing some differing types of magic systems as well, if you enjoy reading Riddle and my other works, I hope you enjoy those as well!

But as for the story itself, it wasn't meant to be a story about a man falling in love... it's the story of a man being dragged into love, kicking and screaming about it. 🦌🌈

To Alastor the Hotel is about control, and his experience there is just a game not to be taken too seriously. Charlie is also about control, or rather, trying to find a way to control without breaking everything with her terrible strength.

Alastor embraces his strength, while she hides from it, and he finds that contradictory instinct in her interesting, so he comes up with the idea of a game to teach her some magic that might help her. But as with all magic, intent governs everything (even when you don't realize), and the spells he's teaching are telling a particular kind of story - you can preview what's happening in the chapter titles that have the runes' names! 🍷

Here’s another of my Hazbin Hotel selfship AUs:

Fall of the First Man

Where Adam returns as a Sinner, but no one recognizes him on sight. So he adopts a new name to go by for his own safety: Alex

From there, he ends up giving in and going to the Hazbin Hotel. He doesn’t think the redemption plan works, but thinks he can take it down from the inside this time. Find the weak point and destroy it. Simple, right?

Wrong. He doesn’t have a real plan and he is no master of manipulation…plus there’s one demon there that’s kind of cute. For a demon. And a bird. Maybe he can put aside his plans for a while and just…indulge.

In other words, I did a Sinner!Adam AU of my own and this was the end result design I made when I made him (basically the art is old). I wanted him to obviously resemble his old self, making why no one else recognizes him so bizarre. But why they don’t is because of Nox, who made it that when Adam is sent to Hell after second-death that unless he tells someone who he is they won’t recognize him. This was both to help him last longer than a day in Hell…and to frustrate him because his fame is very important to him. This is a punishment and a lesson for the First Man…it’s up to him whether or not he learns anything.

But that glamour effect is why Adam came up with the new name of “Alex” (which is a reference to the voice actor, Alex Brightman, yes) which he goes by for a good chunk of the story before he’s forced to reveal his true identity. There’s also a slow burn romance between him and Meg (the version that isn’t actually a Goetia demon but takes the form of one) which I didn’t draw much of…but I might draw more of it in the future.
