Self-Portrait with Matilda, 1996
Every day she untangles herself from the sidewalks, sits in the library with the sun spilling in her lap. She stacks the novels into a skyline. At the bookstore, I don’t think about how close the men in worn wood chairs are, seats rubbed smooth. I face windows, the exit past the escalator, so much unseen behind me. In the fever of July, my thighs and roller skate scrapes are covered to my ankles. When the night has paced outside, her father asks, where were you? When we were younger, my brother would call me his best friend. I would slip my thumb from my mouth. No, leave me alone. My brother can fly from the handlebars of his bike, his road rash a stigmata peeling his palms, blood baptism of a lovely, healthy, active kid. I have rollerskate scrapes, and adults look at my fallen fruit knees and ask what happened? My brother must have been hungry then–my friends have brothers who turn their locust appetites to the pantry and fridge, leaving the bones of empty cartons. We leave the house to catch the 6am bus. He won’t look at me, and I hear him talk to me once a week– cross here. When he graduates, everyone is surprised we share the same last name. Matilda eats pancakes for breakfast, for dinner there are watery mashed potatoes and soft carrots. For me, cereal or hunger waits. Before closing, I drink coffee to feel full, later sleep to smother the echoes of my belly. In the night, her brother shoves her away from the T.V.’s glow and she falls out the front door. In the summer, we become bad exiles–rattling our wagon across train tracks, wading to our waists in switchgrass.

[T]he modern environmental history of sandalwood (a widely-accepted 16 species of fragrant trees within the genus Santalum including the species Santalum album [...]) [...] [is] a history defined by anthropogenic impact endangering the genus across its range. [...] Selling at about $147,000 per metric ton, the aromatic heartwood of Indian sandalwood (S. album) is [among] [...] the most expensive wood in the world. Globally, 90 per cent of the world’s S. album comes from India [...]. [T]he species came to the brink of extinction [...]. [I]t is not until 1974 that supply of the most valuable species of sandalwood was depleted in the major sandal-bearing region of India. [...] Part of the difference, then, lies in each region’s history of governance and relationship to the market.
Islands [in the Pacific] abruptly brought into the modern world system were quickly overexploited, whereas areas such as southern India [...], which had [...] been centres of world sandalwood trade since at least the eleventh century, managed to negotiate the pressures of the European trading companies and forest bureaucracies in the nineteenth century. [...] In contrast [...], much of the Pacific was introduced to the international market by sandalwood traders who moved from one island to the next harvesting the tree until there was no more left to harvest. India and Timor had been the sole suppliers of sandalwood to the world market until the late eighteenth century.
While there had long been a world market for S. album, at the end of the eighteenth century European, American and Australian merchants tried to take control of the sandalwood trade by selling newly discovered Pacific species of sandalwood to China. By the mid-nineteenth century these sandalwood traders had systematically stripped most of the Pacific islands of this precious tree. Time and again sandalwood species were exploited until they went locally extinct, or nearly so, often with massive ecological damage, not to mention the political and cultural toll on the islands.
In Hawaii, also known as Tahn Heung Sahn or ‘the Sandalwood Mountains’ to [some of] the Chinese, the sandalwood trade collapsed by 1828, only decades after it began.
The first shipwrecked Europeans to land on Fiji’s second largest island, Vanua Levu, also called it Sandalwood Island. The sandalwood trade collapsed there within 20 years of its discovery and inauguration.
In the Marquesas, the British and Americans decimated sandalwood in just three years, between 1814 and 1816.
A similar story can be told in the case of S. austrocaledonicum of Vanuatu.

Meet Aether Beyond the Binary Contributor Terra P. Waters
Another day, another AETHER BEYOND THE BINARY creator to shine the spotlight on!
Before we get to that, just a note: hi, I’m Nina Waters, the lead editor, the person running this campaign, and the one who writes all these blog posts. I’ll be traveling for the next four days (Friday, Jan 12 – Monday, Jan 15) to vend for Duck Prints Press at Arisia in Boston. As a result, I will be slower to answer messages, reply to comments, and post updates (I’m going to try to post one, but I’m not sure I’ll have time). I appreciate your patience while I’m less available. And if by some chance, you’re attending the con, make sure you come and say hi! I’ll be at table D14 in the dealer’s room.
Now, on to Terra…!
Tumblr media
About Terra: Terra is a scientist by day who lives in the Pacific Northwest with her family. She has been writing fiction as long as she can remember, and has always told her partner of 17 years that if she wasn’t a scientist, she would be an author. During grad school, she discovered fanfiction and immediately began writing her own. After many years and several fandoms (including Teen Wolf, Hawaii Five-0, and Stranger Things), she returned to writing original fiction. To date, she has self-published two novellas in a 90s-nostalgia polyamory comedy series and has drafted two YA/NA sci-fi novels. When not doing science or writing, you can find Terra indulging her yarn addiction and knitting.

Terra has previously published one short stories with Duck Prints Press, a Patreon-exclusive entitled The Wayward Timekeeper, and she also wanted to share a few of her works from AO3:
Kope Kamekona (Hawaii Five-O, Steve McGarrett/Catherine Rollins/Danny Williams)
Forever’s gonna start tonight (Stranger Things, A/B/O, multiple ships and ot3s)
Other Delicacies (Our Flag Means Death, Ed Teach/Stede Bonnet) – this is the piece that Terra used to apply to Duck Prints Press, and several of us reviewers liked it so much that we sought it out and read the whole thing even though we aren’t in the fandom!
An Interview with Terra P. Waters
What motivates you to create?
My love for the ideas!
How did you pick the name you create under?
I’ve been using the name “pterawaters” since 2009, when I joined fanfiction.net. “Ptera” came from an old gaming character I had, “Ptera the Pterrible,” and “Waters” was a last name I really liked the sound of. For my original writing, I decided to go with a more conventional version of the name. I moved the P from the front of my name to the middle initial as an homage to my fannish writing name.
What do you consider to be your strengths as a creator?
My ability to brainstorm scenarios and know how to outline the plot from there. Longer-form works, where I get to dig into the character motivations and development. World building.
What do you consider to be your weaknesses as a creator?
Short stories, creating characters who serve the story I want to tell, adding enough description around the dialog and plot.
When and why did you begin creating?
I’ve been writing since I was a kid, and even took a lot of creative writing classes during college (aside from my science major). I get a lot of joy out of thinking “what if…” and then turning that idea into a story.
Are you a pantser, a planner, or a planster? What’s your process look like?
I’m most often a planner. I like to outline the story beats of any project before I write. Sometimes, I’ll be more of a plantser. I’ll write 1-2k words of an idea before I do the rest of the outline, so I can see if it’s an idea worth planning out further.
Which of your own creations is your favorite? Why?
I wrote a story called “Entanglement” that was part of a long Stranger Things fanwork series. It’s absolutely my favorite thing I’ve ever written, and I’m excited to get to the point where I can incorporate the rewritten version into my sci-fi series.
What are your favorite tropes?
Polyamory, First times/Getting together, Forced proximity (cuddling for warmth, only one bed), Soulmate AUs, Omegaverse, Fake relationship, Friends to Lovers
What are your favorite snacks and/or drinks to consume while creating?
I like herbal tea, candy, or a crunchy snack like popcorn. I’ve recently gotten into eating roasted lentils, which is a nice substitute for not being able to eat nuts anymore.
What is your “dream project” – the thing you’d see as the culmination of your work as a creator?
I want to finish a series of at least 4 novels and have them all in print.
When you look at your “career” as a creator, what  achievement would you most like to reach – what, if it happened or has  already happened, would/did make you go “now – now I’m a success!”?
I would like to have at least one full-length novel printed and for people to actually buy it!
Tell us about your pet(s).
I have two orange cats, Gadget (the chonk) and Gizmo (anxiety in animal form).
Tumblr media
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
Finish the thing. My writing got so much better once I forced myself to finish fan works so I could put them up for other people to read. Practicing the first part of writing a story without practicing how to write the end leaves you never finishing anything.

Excerpt:
Victoria turned and ran a hand over the runes again. “What bothers me is that these are early Age of Aether markings. You see the way they’re using archaic forms of our letters?”
Sasha leaned closer. “I’ll be damned. This doesn’t match the bronze-era artifacts in the rest of the cave, either.” They made a tiny humming noise. “Who else would have this much knowledge of ancient runes?”
As Victoria leaned as close as she could to the wall, she asked distractedly, “What do you mean?”
“Obviously, it’s a fake,” they said, mulling over the problem in their head. “Sanderson has wanted my place on the admissions committee since he joined the department.”
“What if it’s not a fake?” Victoria made a tiny, excited noise. “What if this is early Aether Age work? What if this is a secret that’s been buried for almost a thousand years?”
Sasha’s heart swooped at the thought. “We have to find out what that inscription says.”
You've read the interview! You've read the excerpt! Now go back the campaign!

Investing in a trustworthy auto transport service can save you time, money, and potential headaches.

As the dust settled following SpaceX’s brief, explosive test launch of Starship in April, both the company and the Federal Aviation Administration dug into investigating the aftermath. The gigantic rocket’s flight lasted just four minutes before it blew up near SpaceX’s Boca Chica launch site on the Texas coast. Images and news reports posted in the days afterward showed boulders of concrete and rebar blasting into the air during liftoff, and there were accounts of particulates raining down on nearby Port Isabel.
Today, both SpaceX and the FAA released statements on their joint “mishap investigation,” which was led by the company and overseen by the FAA, with NASA and the National Transportation Safety Board acting as observers. The results had to be evaluated and approved by FAA officials, but neither the agency nor SpaceX has released a full report, which would include proprietary data and US Export Control information.  Despite SpaceX CEO Elon Musk’s claim on X (formerly Twitter) on September 5 that “Starship is ready to launch,” the FAA’s statement makes clear that SpaceX has more work to do. “The closure of the mishap investigation does not signal an immediate resumption of Starship launches at Boca Chica. SpaceX must implement all [63] corrective actions that impact public safety and apply for and receive a license modification from the FAA that addresses all safety, environmental and other applicable regulatory requirements prior to the next Starship launch,” the statement reads.
The FAA also released a “mishap closure letter” sent to SpaceX officials today, which further outlines the agency’s safety and environmental concerns. “During lift-off, structural failure of the launch pad deck foundation occurred, sending debris and sand into the air,” the letter states. On ascent, when the rocket deviated from its trajectory, the Autonomous Flight Safety System issued a destruct command, but there was an “unexpected delay” before it actually blew up, the letter continues.
The letter to SpaceX also summarizes what the FAA expects the company to address before it can be granted a new launch license. Those actions include “redesigns of vehicle hardware to prevent leaks and fires, redesign of the launch pad to increase its robustness, incorporation of additional reviews in the design process, additional analysis and testing of safety critical systems and components including the Autonomous Flight Safety System (AFSS), and the application of additional change control practices.”
A statement on the SpaceX website briefly describes updates the company has been making to the rocket and launchpad since April. These include a hot-stage separation system, intended to use the second-stage engines to “push the ship away from the booster,” as well as a new thrust vector control system with electric motors, rather than hydraulic systems, which the company says “has fewer potential points of failure.”
Their statement also said the company had reinforced the launch pad’s foundation. Similarly, Musk tweeted this morning: “Thousands of upgrades to Starship & launchpad/Mechazilla,” referring to the launch tower.
The April launch was not the first time SpaceX had tested—and crashed—a version of Starship, although previous launches had been of earlier prototypes, including just the upper-stage rocket. In April, engineers had sought to test the fully stacked rocket and to send it on its first nearly orbital flight. After stage separation, the uncrewed upper stage was supposed to fly almost all the way around the Earth, and then splash down in the Pacific Ocean near Hawaii 90 minutes later.
On launch day, Starship successfully got off the pad, but trouble became apparent a few minutes later. During ascent, propellant leaked at the end of the Super Heavy booster and caused fires, which severed the connection with the primary flight computer, according to the SpaceX statement. That’s why the upper stage and the booster failed to separate, the company concluded. Engineers then lost control of the vehicle, the connected stack began to rotate and tumble, and it eventually exploded.
Another problem was the cratering of the launch pad, caused by what Musk described on Twitter Spaces as a “rock tornado” generated by the launch. The launchpad notably lacked a flame deflector—or water deluge system—which most pads are built with. This is intended to diffuse the sound, flames, and energy produced by a launch. In SpaceX’s statement today, the company says it has made upgrades “to prevent a recurrence of the pad foundation failure,” and that includes “the addition of a flame deflector, which SpaceX has successfully tested multiple times.”
(SpaceX has not responded to WIRED’s request for comment.)
There’s a lot on the line for Starship. At 390 feet tall, it is bigger than either SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy or even NASA’s Space Launch System. With 33 Raptor engines and millions of pounds of thrust, it could become the most powerful rocket in the world. Musk envisions using Starship for Mars voyages, and NASA plans to use it for the Artemis moon missions, starting with the historic Artemis 3 flight planned for 2025, which will take astronauts back to lunar soil for the first time since 1972. NASA also awarded SpaceX a contract for the Artemis 4 landing scheduled for 2028. Those plans will face setbacks if SpaceX can’t quickly get its launch site and its massive new rocket working. A couple weeks after the Starship explosion, NASA awarded Blue Origin—SpaceX’s rival—a moon lander contract for the Artemis 5 mission slated for 2029, perhaps as a hedge in case SpaceX’s troubles with Starship continue.
Inaugural rocket launches almost always fail, especially attempted orbital flights, and SpaceX’s Starship’s short-lived flight was not unexpected. (NASA’s successful lunar flight by the Space Launch System and Orion last year was an exception.) Musk himself tweeted that he thought there might be a 50 percent chance of success and said on Twitter Spaces that he hoped the rocket wouldn’t “fireball” and melt the launchpad. The FAA oversees other companies’ launch site investigations too—including Blue Origin’s following its New Shepard rocket failure in September 2022.
The Starship launch site neighbors a wildlife refuge and public beach. Local and environmental groups like Save RGV (referring to the Rio Grande Valley) and the Center for Biological Diversity raised concerns even before the test launch, not just about debris but also about increased vehicle traffic, intense heat, noise, and light pollution from construction, and launch activities that could affect protected species and the public beach. On May 1, they sued the FAA for granting the launch license without a more thorough environmental impact statement. (SpaceX later joined the lawsuit on the FAA’s side.) Through their lawsuit, the groups are calling for the FAA to conduct a fuller review of the Starship launch program that would likely include more mitigating measures. They feel this will better protect the local community and wildlife, including threatened and endangered species like Kemp’s ridley sea turtle and migratory birds like the piping plover.
“The explosion, the destruction at the launch pad, the debris scattered across the area, the dust floating to nearby towns, what occurred proves our point: The mitigation is clearly insufficient,” says Jared Margolis, senior attorney for the Center for Biological Diversity. “As we look to the stars, as we try to look forward to this new age of spaceflight, we can’t forget about life here on Earth.”

National Review article: Jane Fonda's Vietnam Actions Were Worse Than You Think by Kyle Smith

Jane Fonda’s Vietnam Actions Were Worse Than You Think
Tumblr media
By KYLE SMITH
March 3, 2021 11:14 AM
A newly restored documentary spotlights her despicable Team Communism cheerleading.
Back around the time Jane Fonda was giving aid and comfort to America’s Communist enemies in North Vietnam, yukking it up with anti-aircraft gunners who shot down our troops — I wonder if there are any laws against that sort of thing — she also headlined an anti-U.S.O. tour. Despising the actual U.S.O. for its policy of giving aid and comfort to American troops, Fonda went on the road with a hippie rebuttal to bolster the chances of the North Vietnamese Stalinists who, after the war turned out the way she wanted it to, forced 300,000 people into prison camps for reeducation. Fonda’s tour was called “F.T.A.,” and in the opening moments of the documentary of the same name, you can see her on stage with her pal and Klute co-star Donald Sutherland screaming out what it stood for: “F*** the Army.”
Filmed in 1971, the film F.T.A. went over like a rat in the punch bowl when it was released in 1972. It was yanked from theaters and most copies were destroyed; seldom has it been seen since. But the Hollywood Foreign Press Association recently decided to spend some of its Golden Globes money on restoring the film so we can all take a look at it with fresh eyes (it is being released in virtual cinemas). So how does Jane Fonda, who was just honored with a lifetime achievement award by the HFPA, look half a century later? Exactly the same: like a brainless simp for Team Communism. Those who tend to dismiss Hollywood stars as merely stupid, not evil, can consider the other side of that.
Tumblr media
Fonda, Sutherland, and assorted tuneless musical acts (songs include “My Ass is Mine” and “Nothing Could Be Finer Than to Be in Indochina”) first went on the road in the U.S., performing in countercultural coffee houses. Next they went on a Pacific tour, aiming to attract off-duty anti-war troops they could influence and leverage while putting on shows near military bases in Hawaii, Tokyo, Manila, and Okinawa. In a new intro to the film, Fonda frames herself as simply an ally to the anti-war troops. It’s evident however, that she and her pals were determined to do everything they could, including encouraging crimes, to depress morale and help boost the Communist side.
Fonda says much but knows nothing; we hear her make all sorts of false assertions. In 1971 footage she proclaims, “The American GIs don’t know why they’re here, don’t want to be here, don’t want to be in Vietnam or Japan or the Philippines or Hawaii.” Hang on, should U.S. troops not defend . . . Hawaii? Is Fonda aware that Hawaii is a U.S. state? Fonda seems to think it’s imperialism for the U.S. to support overseas allies at their invitation, and that imperialism starts in Hawaii. (Okinawa was occupied by U.S. troops after the war, but two years before this film was shot the U.S. agreed to cede the island to Japan. American troops remained there at the request of the Japanese government, not out of imperial aggression.)

Sutherland and guests are seen onstage in their F.T.A. show making larkish jokes about “fragging” — suggesting that it’s hilarious when enlisted soldiers shoot their officers. Other dopey songs and skits absurdly refer to U.S. efforts in Southeast Asia as “genocide,” urge soldiers to commit insubordination, and steer them to refuse to fight. One describes the war as secretly being controlled by “the businessmen you’re fighting for,” in an interlude that features Fonda and Co. singing and dancing in top hats while carrying canes. Singers belt out lines such as, “They’ll lock you up in their stockades, yeah they’ll lock you up ‘cause they’re afraid.” The vibe is half puerile Seventies variety-show, half Maoism; the tour could have been called Free to Be . . . Ho and Me. Or maybe Socialist Sesame Street. Several segments, aimed at black troops, make the absurd inference that losing the war will somehow make things better in Harlem (which remained a dire place to live for decades after we lost the war) and there’s a slam-poetry section that contains lines such as, “I can’t exactly tell you what to do/But there’s the armory. The rest is up to you.”
Sutherland solemnly reads from the (Stalinist) writer Dalton Trumbo’s anti-war novel Johnny Got His Gun, Fonda and three other ladies perform a can-can to protest catcalling, and there’s a loving segment on a communist street march in Manila, as well as a bitter one about the A-bomb attack on Hiroshima. (Fonda et al. do not provide an alternate theory of how the U.S should have ended the war that Japan started.) One performance, amusingly, breaks down when pro-war GI’s start making their voices heard and go up on stage to interrupt the action. “Should we ignore them?” Fonda asks Sutherland. “No, no, no, they have to go,” he explains.

The average starstruck Private Snuffy attending these shows might reasonably have surmised that Jane Fonda and Donald Sutherland wanted him to shoot his superiors, refuse lawful orders, maybe even launch a mutiny. Doing any of these things would, of course, likely lead to a court-martial and imprisonment. Fonda says in the intro, “As I became involved in the GI movement, I started to understand its class significance.” Does she understand the class significance of rich Hollywood actors telling uneducated working-class kids to do stupid things that could ruin their lives? As usual when dealing with Bolshie Bourgies, the only connecting impulse is hatred of America. If American troops have to suffer for what they learn from Hollywood dopes, they’re just collateral damage in the larger war against America.

Jurassic Park is a 1993 American science fiction action film[4] directed by Steven Spielberg and produced by Kathleen Kennedy and Gerald R. Molen. It is the first installment in the Jurassic Park franchise, and the first film in the Jurassic Park original trilogy, and is based on the 1990 novel of the same name by Michael Crichton and a screenplay written by Crichton and David Koepp. The film is set on the fictional island of Isla Nublar, located off Central America's Pacific Coast near Costa Rica. There, wealthy businessman John Hammond and a team of genetic scientists have created a wildlife park of de-extinct dinosaurs. When industrial sabotage leads to a catastrophic shutdown of the park's power facilities and security precautions, a small group of visitors and Hammond's grandchildren struggle to survive and escape the perilous island.
Before Crichton's novel was published, four studios put in bids for its film rights. With the backing of Universal Studios, Spielberg acquired the rights for $1.5 million before its publication in 1990; Crichton was hired for an additional $500,000 to adapt the novel for the screen. Koepp wrote the final draft, which left out much of the novel's exposition and violence and made numerous changes to the characters. Filming took place in California and Hawaii from August to November 1992, and post-production rolled until May 1993, supervised by Spielberg in Poland as he filmed Schindler's List. The dinosaurs were created with groundbreaking computer-generated imagery by Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) and with life-sized animatronic dinosaurs built by Stan Winston's team. To showcase the film's sound design, which included a mixture of various animal noises for the dinosaur roars, Spielberg invested in the creation of DTS, a company specializing in digital surround sound formats. The film also underwent an extensive $65 million marketing campaign, which included licensing deals with over 100 companies.
Jurassic Park premiered on June 9, 1993, at the Uptown Theater in Washington, D.C., and was released on June 11 in the United States. It went on to gross over $914 million worldwide in its original theatrical run,[5] becoming the highest-grossing film ever at the time, a record held until the release of Titanic in 1997.[6] It received positive reviews from critics, who praised its special effects and Spielberg's direction.[7] Following its 20th anniversary re-release in 2013, Jurassic Park became the oldest film in history to surpass $1 billion in ticket sales and the seventeenth overall. The film won more than twenty awards, including three Academy Awards for its technical achievements in visual effects and sound design. In 2018, it was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". The film was followed by five sequels – The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997), Jurassic Park III (2001), Jurassic World (2015), Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018), and Jurassic World Dominion (2022).

'Rescue HI-Surf' Review: Fox's Hawaii-Set Lifeguarding Drama
Never let it be said that Fox’s Rescue HI-Surf doesn’t try to deliver what’s expected of it. The action drama regularly metes out dangerous rescues of the lifeguarding variety, plunging deep into the Pacific or zipping around on a succession of jet skis. When its hard-bodied heroes aren’t saving each other’s necks or bickering over office politics, they’re dutifully making eyes at one…

Effortless Transit: Your Essential Handbook for Transporting Your Automobile from Hawaii to the Mainland in 2024
Are you considering shipping your car from Hawaii to the mainland in 2024? Moving your vehicle across the Pacific Ocean may seem like a daunting task, but with the right information and guidance, the process can be smooth and stress-free. In this comprehensive handbook, we will provide you with all the essential tips and tricks to ensure a seamless transition for your automobile.
Shipping Car from Hawaii to Mainland : An Overview
Shipping a car from Hawaii to the mainland involves a complex logistical process that requires careful planning and preparation. There are several options available for transporting your vehicle, including container shipping, roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) shipping, and air freight. Each method has its own set of pros and cons, so it's important to choose the one that best suits your specific needs and budget.
Tumblr media
Container Shipping
One popular option for shipping cars from Hawaii to the mainland is container shipping. This method involves loading your vehicle into a secure container, which is then transported by ship to the mainland. Container shipping offers added protection for your car during transit and allows you to pack personal belongings in the container along with your vehicle.
Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo) Shipping
RoRo shipping is another common method for transporting cars from Hawaii to the mainland. With RoRo shipping, your vehicle is driven onto a specialized ship, where it is securely stored and transported to the mainland. This method is often more cost-effective than container shipping but offers less protection for your vehicle during transit.
Air Freight
For those looking for a quick and efficient way to transport their vehicle, air freight is an option to consider. While air freight is the fastest method of shipping a car from Hawaii to the mainland, it is also the most expensive. This option is ideal for those who need their vehicle to arrive quickly and are willing to pay a premium for expedited service.
Tips for a Smooth Transit Experience
Plan Ahead: Start researching shipping options and obtaining quotes well in advance of your desired shipping date to ensure a smooth transit experience.
Prepare Your Vehicle: Thoroughly clean and inspect your car before shipping to document any existing damage and ensure it meets all shipping requirements.
Choose a Reputable Shipping Company: Select a reputable and experienced shipping company to handle the transportation of your vehicle from Hawaii to the mainland.
Review Insurance Coverage: Make sure your car is adequately insured during transit to protect against any potential damage or loss.
Stay Informed: Stay in touch with your shipping company throughout the process to receive updates on the status of your vehicle and any potential delays.
Conclusion
Shipping your car from Hawaii to the mainland doesn't have to be a stressful experience. With proper planning and the right information, you can ensure a smooth and hassle-free transit for your vehicle. By following the tips outlined in this essential handbook, you can confidently navigate the shipping process and have your car safely transported to its destination in 2024.

Habitation
(after Margaret Atwood’s “Habitation”) We lie on the soft couch, our legs twining like freckled eels, enmeshing in pearly needled grins of pelagic happiness. We sip our wine and listen to the radio whinny, spurs jingling in the pueblo twilight, light spilling from canteen windows. Two planes collided in mid-air yesterday, and the passengers, all parachuters, leapt for safety and survived without injury. We take turns cooking and cleaning up for each other, put- ting the conch shell to our ear, hearing the blood thrumming. Every day the sun hangs a little more crooked, its smile a little wider, its gold teeth and yellowed gums a smoker’s knick-knacks. This summer is the hottest on record. The newsstands catch fire. We turn over in bed. We are used to our orbits shifting… We talk about our days, pretending our trite quicknesses are interesting, from the school, the office, reciting Gilgamesh’s Epic with insolent cherry lips, kohl arrows staining our cheeks. I feel your indolent heat against the dark mahogany of my ribs. Your lips spark in prayer. Your long shadow unclasps my bra. This marriage is not something pillared, no marble temple. This devotion is a kindled red fire out on the frozen tundra, and night is falling. Flint strikes on flint. Stone births daylight, a magic in an age when every rock and tall tree bears a soul. We bless the sacred heat that licks at the crooked kindling, a gift from the gods that warms our limbs weary from hunting reindeer. We huddle closely in our fur cloaks and skin boots. Not far off, the first pigments are being laid down at Lascaux, Altamira, such lifelike renderings that seem to snort and shriek… Meanwhile, the portraits at Chauvet and Nawarla Gabarnmang are ancient, ancient already, and buzzing with honey ghosts… What is the secret to threading an arrow through the ribs of a running deer, as it gallops through the underbrush toward the dregs of its life? It’s a secret, but I’ll tell you—press your face to the white of this page and I’ll whisper it in your ear.

NFR Reviews #7: The Endless Summer
Released 1966 / Inducted 2002
Tumblr media
Surfing momentarily took over pop culture in the first half of the 1960s. Post-WWII experimentation with new materials like resin, fiberglass, and later foam made more maneuverable, easier-to-produce surfboards. Media production followed suit. The music charts featured surf-rock artists like the Beach Boys and Dick Dale, while movies like 1959’s Gidget, 1961’s Elvis vehicle Blue Hawaii, and several following beach party movies used the sport as a selling point. It wasn't difficult to see the appeal: a combination of idyllic beach scenes, a sense of freedom, and a little bit of thrill and danger.
Despite all that, director Bruce Brown struggled to find distributors for this low-budget movie due to perceived lack of mainstream appeal. It was a hit on its first screenings in Wichita, Kansas, but distributors weren’t sure about it until after a successful run at Kip’s Bay Theater in New York City. It set itself apart from other films cashing in on the trend. Other surf films were more commercialized and focused more on hedonism and romance subplots than the athleticism of the sport itself, its creators often having little direct surfing experience. Many early-60s beach party movies leaned towards clean-cut characters with parent-generation-approved behaviors and values despite a lack of onscreen adult supervision, starring teen idols like Fabian and Frankie Avalon. This one had a niche target audience of other surfers, to be exhibited at surf clubs, placing it in the subgenre of “pure” surf movies. Other surf media portrayed California as an object of escapist desire filled with bright colors and suntans; this one has the state as an overcrowded locale with an inconvenient winter season. This sets up the central concept: surfers Mike Hynson and Robert August leave California to travel around the world, following the summer season through Africa, Australia, and the Pacific Islands to find the perfect wave.
The Endless Summer does share one quality with all the surf exploitation movies and music: its intention to be seen as young and hip. Thanks to the postwar economy and baby boom, the mid-60s had an abundance of young people with disposable income. It gained traction in the mainstream despite its niche roots, which the director attributed to a desire for innocence and escapism during the Vietnam era. Another big factor is how the movie makes you feel like you’re an accepted member of a cool, trendy club. Bruce Brown’s narration offers a fresh distinction from the average documentary narrator. He positions himself as the viewer’s buddy and not a teacher or authority figure by peppering the script with jokes. He refers to himself by saying things like “he’s the only surfer I’ve ever seen do this,” aiming for the specificity and relatability of his personal experiences instead of having the narrator be a detached, objective presence. Due to its origin as silent footage screened in clubs with Brown adding live commentary, the official script and music recordings were added after the fact. He’s the sole voice heard through the majority of the film’s runtime. Instead of hearing either the surfers or natives speaking on camera, Brown often-jokingly recreates interactions and voice impressions in a similar manner to retelling old stories with a friend. The repetition of “You should’ve been here yesterday” in the Australia section, referring to how the best waves always happen the day before a surfer arrives, gives the audience the feeling of being let in on an inside joke.
As soon as the two surfers arrive in Senegal, waves breaking outside their hotel are accompanied with a narrative of unconquered wilderness, complete with waves no surfer had ever ridden or perhaps even seen. In the Ghana section, comedy is mined from the locals being clueless about surfing. There’s jokes about Africans potentially attacking over violations of unknown religious taboos or spearing the surfers, too. The film claims the American surfers were the ones to introduce surfing to the area and no one else had seen anything like it. The film later admits the fishermen's canoes weren’t so different, albeit intended more as practical tools for work than a sport. Surfing developed in Polynesia, and was introduced to the US through Hawaii. It held major spiritual significance, and the best surfing spots were reserved for royalty. However, similar wave-riding practices developed independently throughout Africa, with one account dating back to the 1640s in what’s now Ghana. They used canoes, yes, but also 12-foot longboards and smaller boards of 3 to 5 feet in length. Onscreen, the surfers have little issue sharing their knowledge with the kids and appear to get along with them. However, the additional in-film framing and narration portrays them as an “other.” The narrative is of Americans who have the means and leisure time to travel the world versus some countries they visited whose ways of life that haven’t changed in millennia and are more tied to daily labor such as fishing. Many elements in modern surf culture did originate in Polynesia–equipment innovations like the long, narrow olo board, surf forecasting, and techniques of trimming across the wave face being some of them. However, the concept of using a board to ride waves for fun and sport developed across most warm-water coastal cultures, including Ghana.
The perfect surfing spot contains a finite amount of space. In the mid-1960s, Surfer magazine began keeping some spots secret so tourist overflow wouldn’t ruin the experience. Author Matt Warshaw suggested journeys to far-flung locations were less about new discoveries and more about getting away from crowds. The Endless Summer team found the perfect wave in South Africa, a country they previously noted as having long stretches of uninhabited space. Like many subcultures, surfing enthusiasts formed in-groups and out-groups. Endless Summer takes steps to define its own identity through who it wants audiences to identify with and who is used as a point of comparison. Its breezy sense of humor twists the traditional documentary format away from “narrator as objective teacher” into “friends joking around.” It captured a youth culture of the time that was distinct from their parents’ mores in a more naturalistic way than the commercialized offerings of big studios. Unfortunately, it also makes comparisons by flattening other countries into unexplored wilderness areas filled with primitive people. The movie’s methods of identity-forming are strongest when the subculture defines itself as who they are, not who they aren’t. A film lacks the limited space of real surf spots, and this one found a wide audience outside niche surf clubs by making viewers feel like they’re included in the club, whether they've ever surfed themselves or not.
