It's downright sinful, and he's starting to think desserts should be banned from all existence.
He's jolted from his thoughts as Jinx nuges her elbow into his side. She's holding out a finger a dollop of raspberry flavoured buttercream with cinnamon candy sugar flakes on it up to him.
“Try! Is so goooood!” She practically sings. It's too cute, the excitement bouncing off of her, it's infectious, it's the highest honour, Jinx sharing her dessert, and it's the last straw. He blinks, and caution gets flung out the window as the sweetest opportunity for vengeance presents itself.

As someone who's not a native English speaker, I think the phrase "you can't have your cake and eat it too" is one of the dumbest idioms I've ever heard. Eating cake is literally the point of having cake! Do you think I'd get cake if I didn't want to eat it? Who are you to have cake, and not eat it? Would you rather I steal cake and eat it? Should I have it and throw it? Is that what you want? Idiot. Fool.

I dropped his hand to climb the mountain
to wish upon the stars
I returned to town alone and abandoned
to a note left in the dark
“I hope you wished for something better;
something better than what we are”
The scribbled “are” had been replaced
with a “were” below the marks
Tears had dried upon my pillow
the sun shined the next day
A pair of climbers’ laughs abrupt
outside of the inn I stayed
They made it back from last night’s hike;
the mountain across the way
Together they wished upon the stars
to feel love and enjoy today

Ok so F all of you for making me check this at this time of night, but...
In my version of the silmarillion there's a letter that Tolkien sent in 1951 in which he describes the story of the book, basically? (Or the stories). In the section of the second era theres a paragraph that starts:
"In the first we see a sort of second fall or at least 'error' of the Elves. There was nothing wrong essentially in their lingering against counsel, still sadly with the mortal lands of their old heroic deeds. But they wanted to have their cake without eating it."
And like... Surely this is how the saying actually goes, because it makes sense: You can't have your cake and NOT eat it too.
Just like imagine a situation where there's leftover cake and the kid says they want some but it's almost dinner so a piece is set aside. And then after dinner the kid is too full and doesn't want to eat it. Fine. Breakfast. Except come morning the kid is munching on cereal and the cake is still untouched.
It is at this point that dad asks "hey kid, if you're not gonna eat the cake, can I have it?"
And the kid replies, full of righteous anger "No! It's my cake! You can't have it!"
"Well then eat it!"
"No, I don't want to!"
And it's at this point that the exasperated father retorts "Well you can't have your cake and not it too!"
And honestly? That sounds kinda commie, telling people they can't hold on to stuff they aren't going to use? Maybe that's why the saying got butchered. Or maybe I'm trying to start a conspiracy, who knows?
we do need to revisit the wording of "you can't have your cake and eat it too" because i don't think it clearly enough conveys that it's more that you can't simultaneously retain a cake and also get to consume it (which would render you cakeless). for years i was like But why not....it's my cake....?

For though, as he had repeatedly told himself, he was by no means in love with Lady Laura . . . nevertheless, he would feel gratified at accepting anything from her hands, and he felt a keen desire for some increase to those ties of friendship which bound them together.
