Descending Stories: Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu
10 volumes
Licensed by Kodansha, also on Azuki and INKR Comics
A hapless young man is released from prison with nothing to his name, but he knows exactly what he wants: to train in the art of rakugo comedic storytelling. After seeing an unforgettable performance from one of Japan’s greatest masters, Yakumo Yurakutei VIII, during his time in jail, he will settle for nothing less than to become apprentice to the best. Yakumo, notorious for taking no students, is persuaded to take him on, and nicknames him Yotaro—the fool. Yotaro has no formal training or elegance, but something about his charisma reminds Yakumo of someone from his past. Note: Won an Excellence Award for manga at the 17th Japan Media Arts Festival Awards in 2013. Won the 38th Kodansha Manga Award for Best General Manga in 2014. Won the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize for New Creators in 2017.

#haha there are more works like these u guys just need to move away from works aimed at kids and teens
Hello, could you mention some of these other works? Also, do you have an anilist account?
Hi, sure thing!
As for manga there's Double by Ayako Noda, about two codependent men and their acting careers. Very homoerotic, similar to Sankaku Mado, and although it's published in a seinen magazine and not a BL one like Sankaku Mado was, they might be seeing more relationship progress than Hiyakawa and Mikado did. It's really good and I highly recommend it!
It might be cheating to mention Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu by Haruko Kumota, since the characters age as the story moves forward, but it's also a story about people who are haunted by their past. It has a generational structure which I adore, and is all around a masterpiece. There's also an excellent anime adaptation for it, worth a watch to see the rakugo stories brought to life!
I can't believe I originally forgot to mention Kowloon Generic Romance by Jun Mayuzuki and had to sneakily add it in here. It's a great romance/mystery series set in Kowloon Walled City. The characters are maybe a bit more put-together than the post was talking about, although they each have their struggles, and things get a little existential. Either way, this manga is required reading for anyone, especially if you want to read amazing stories about characters in their 30's. It's helped me come to terms with my own aging (I sound so old when I say that, but I'm just talking about seeing wrinkles as proof you've lived and not your body becoming old and ugly).
Gangsta by Kohske is also cool, although it's on a hiatus due to her poor health. It's about two guys doing all kinds of dirty jobs with a mafia/cop kind of setting. One of the main characters is deaf, and that's been pretty cool to see. It also has an anime, but it's horrible and brought the studio to bankruptcy lmao (not really, but it was the last thing they produced).
Then there’s Uramichi Oniisan, which got an anime adaptation with a stacked seiyuu cast (worth watching just for Mamo’s laugh). It’s a comedy about adults working on a children's tv-show, and how soul-crushing life is when you have to work to live, and nothing to live for. The humour comes from the juxtaposition between adult hardships and how carefree or direct children can be. It’s worryingly relatable at times, but quite repetitive.
Lastly, because I don't know if I can recommend it to whoever, there's Happy Kuso Life by Harada, about two guys who are socially on the bottom (one of them unemployed and the other one recently demoted), who both want to bottom and end up as some sort of sex friends? They're both losers and assholes, and the fact that they're over 30 gets brought up multiple times which always brings me joy as someone who's still younger than them ha. Fair warning though, it's an erotic comedy manga, and can be quite crude.
And no, I don't have an anilist account.

Kinda late, I've finished this BL challenge in twitter so I want to wrote it down in tumblr too...
Day 1 - My fav BL manga
First started BL in 2020 (yes kinda newbie), I have many fav & know it's a growing list. But if I have to pick BL that's still in my top 5 until now it's BARBARITIES by Tsuta Suzuki. The story is great, art is amazing also love the couple's dynamics.
Day 2- My fav BL author
It's impossible to choose one, because I have so many BL authors & artists that are special to me. But on top of my head here are my top 3 fav BL authors/artists :
- Haruko Kumota
- Fumi Yoshinaga
- Hidaka Shoko
Day 3- BL manga from the 90s that I like for this #30DaysOfBLChallenge
Until now, not many BL from the 80's or 90's that I love and enjoy. But BL from the 90s that is a favorite of mine and I will love to re-read is FAKE by Sanami Matoh. I never bored to read Dee and Ryo....
Day 4 - BL manga that you would recommend to everyone is
- Link and Ring by Tsuyuki Yuruco
It's so good ! Love how the couple got together & how their relationship develop. One of the most healthiest BL couple that I know (until now). Certainly the best start/new in BL...
Day 5 - BL manga that you wanted to read more of it will be
- Double Fake by Jita
An omegaverse but how the story goes is so interesting. The start of their relationship is for business only but of course it develop to become real love between them. It's just too short for me.
Day 6 - BL manga that I liked only because of the sex scenens for #30DaysOfBLChallenge
- Usotsuki Omega by Megane
- Glamorous Lip by Yanao Rock
I was so surprised when finding out that the person behind 1st one is also behind Wotakoi & 2nd one is behind Black Butler, too 🤔

three ships: fraser/kowalski for sheer duration in my life, dean/castiel judging by the quantity of my reblogs and content of my Blog over the past couple of year, palm/nuengdiao because i'm watching that show and i'm VERY tense about their future. heart in my MOUTH whenever i watch that show.
first ever ship: Strictly speaking. Embarrassing to say this. TMI. Not that i shy away from it !!!! BUT it was I think characters in the Redwall book series. This is a UK childrens fantasy series with anthropomorphic animals who fight battles etc and I was pretty obsessed with it from about the ages of 9-12. I got suddenly very bored of it circa book 13 or 14 (they could be . very repetitive). This was the first fandom I stumbled across fanfiction for . on the FAMILY COMPUTER. because the author's website was listed on the back cover and that website linked to a page that turned out to have some (g-rated non shippy) fanfiction on it. Anyway in a couple of these books there is a heroic girl mouse in one book with a best friend /malewife boy mouse character. I'm pretty sure it was them. And if it wasn't them it was probably Alanna / George from the Tamora Pierce books.
last song: i've listened to very little music over the last few days so statistically it's gonna be . the song in the last ep of My School President or that one Gaspar Nali video. but I have listened to a LOT of the podcast Climbing Gold, which I really enjoy, it's on spotify, apple podcasts, etc.
last movie: “The Wonder”, on Netflix. It's good!!!!!!! Florence Pugh great.... Sebastian Lelio good director..... ireland very beautiful and muddy ..... the framing device maybe made more sense to me at end than beginning
currently reading: joan didion, 'where I was from'. Also the manga 'Descending Stories', Haruko Kumota.
currently watching: The Warp Effect, My School President, Never Let Me Go, The Bear, How To With Joe Wilson.
currently consuming: nothing ... glass of water??? Last ate toast and a leftover sausage and broccoli . normal lunch event
currently craving: i am thinking VERY intensely about figuring out a steamer setup for turnip cake and nian gao, because i really like them, i want to make them this weekend, and the last time i made them my steamer situation was NOT ideal. the subject of which pans fit into which pots consumes me. and I also wish to make various of these nyt cookie recipes..... I'm not usually a cookie person but the picture of the gochujang one really got to me.

“got to be in the top 5 bl manga i’ve ugly cried to” can i get the rest of the list, i need recs pls 👀🙏
Hahaha what an amazing ask :DD
These are in no particular order and idk if you’re already familiar with all of these but here goes:
Nakamura Asumiko’s Classmates series; Kumota Haruko’s Itoshi no nekokke/ My Darling Kitten Hair series
Lumping these two together because they both made me cry tears of queer joy
The themes of family and coming out are handled so gently if sometimes bittersweetly in these stories
AND the wedding scenes in both series are soooo lovely I’m gonna cry just thinking abt them
(Classmates is published in eng by Seven Seas, Nekokke sadly does not have an official eng release after Jmanga went down and I think it’s kinda underrated in the eng speaking manga sphere sobb)
Marukido Maki’s Pornographer series & End of the World With You
Once again lumping two series together bc Marukido Maki just does Things to me okay
Honestly I think all of their series have made me look at my life and my choices and reflect on all kinds of things I never expected to be while reading a story abt idk dictation of erotic novels
Also the bittersweet and somewhat unusual rlationships Marukido Maki writes are so good
(Pornographer and its sequel & prequel can be read on Mangaplanet. End of the World does not have an official eng release, but both of these series do have decent live action adaptations, Pornographer’s is called ”The Novelist” in eng)
Harada’s One Room Angel
I know Harada is a big hit or miss for a lot of people, I am definitely a fan even if I don’t love all of their series
This is another story that made me think about life, choices, healing, finding meaning within yourself... so many themes that easily make me cry
(One Room Angel can be read on Mangaplanet. There is also a great live action series even though it hits a bit different than the original does)
Asada Nemui’s Sleeping Dead
Look it’s been a year since I read it but this story about zombies and trauma and the horrors of living is still haunting me
My full, very detailed write-up on Sleeping Dead can be found here
Overall I love Asada Nemui’s stories that dan be quite dark and brutal but that also have humor and humanity in them
(Sleeping Dead doesn’t have an official eng translation but it has been translated in French at least. Some of Asada Nemui’s other translated works can be read on Mangaplanet and Renta.)
Azuma Kaya’s The Scene of My Rumspringa
Adding this last because this is what inspired this whole ask
The themes of growing up and leaving your childhood behind and finding your own path are done SO.SO.WELL in this story. And the way Azuma Kaya’s visual storytelling brings those themes alive is just stunning
If there is anyone out there who still hasn’t read this Amish themed BL manga, I am begging on my knees: it is NOT a joke it is actually one of the most touching and sweet and unique BL stories you’ll ever read
(The official english translation can be read on Bookwalker and Inkr)
(I’ve also written about the spin-off Dear Gene that has a very similar vibe)
BONUS
Sweet Pool
This is not a manga but a horror BL visual novel
The way this made me break down sobbing at 3 am... still haven’t recovered even though it’s been years
The themes of loneliness, fate and choices affected me in some profound way, it is definitely my fave out of all the Nitro+Chiral visual novels I’ve played
(Jast Blue has published this in english, you can get the uncensored version on their website)
