Harry never had a birthday party, because his birthday was always while he was with the Dursleys, and when it finally wasn't, it literally was shit. The minister interrupted and the guests left before it even started. No one in that party seemed to care that it was Harry's birthday, they were just anxious to eat.

The first birthday after the war went unnoticed. Everyone was mourning, the world was trying to get back on it's feet... he felt guilty for even wishing a happy birthday.

The second birthday after the war, he wanted a birthday party. He was turning nineteen, it didn't look like the appropriate age to have a birthday party for the first time, but he thought he'd be allowed to experience it at least once. He didn't know how to ask for it though. In what will be known as the most embarrassing moment of his life, he'd asked Ron one night, in whispers and apologies.

Ron waited until Harry was out of sight, and then Ron cried. For the sad nature of the request, and because he remembered his own little sad birthday party last year, while they hadn't even remembered Harry's. What had he thought of it? Had he believed Ron deserved the birthday more than he did, for some reason? Why wasn't he angry with them? Was it that easy for him to believe that that kind of love just wasn't for him?

Of course Harry had a birthday party, and after it, the house was empty. Except for Ginny asleep in the bedroom, Hermione doing the dishes in the kitchen, Ron sweeping the living room and Harry, half asleep on the couch.

"What did you think of it?" Ron asked quietly.

"It was okay..."

"Okay?" Ron worried, "what happened?"

"Too much people, too much noise. It actually made me a little anxious," he muttered, "I don't think I want another one next year."

Ron didn't cry, because Ron was good at waiting to be alone before crying. "Well, mate. You have a whole year to decide. Whatever it is, it's fine."

Harry had nodded and drifted away in dreams. But the next year, when Harry asked him one night to please not let anyone throw a party for him, Ron could just agree and let his chest clench at the thought of this thing. This little thing, this little detail. That was also stolen from Harry because of his childhood.

Sometimes he couldn't believe he was once jealous of him.
