don't fuck with florists (they'll fuck you up) - oneshot, soo cute, it's quite popular, time travel (one of my favourite tropes)

you belong to me (i belong to you) - this one is one of my favourites, it updates slowly, and i've been following it since the beginning, it's very dark and delicious and THE DYNAMICS ARE JUST 🤌🤌

What He Grows To Be - this is one where harry raises tom (another popular trope), and so naturally it has some questionable undertones, but its so well written so eh

But For You, I Did - oneshot, so usually in time travel fics, harry and tom are a bit older (like 5th year-ish), but they're both in 1st year in this one, so its a cool take on a fix-it

Teaching History (is Old News) - crack fics are so so amazing, and this one does plot with crack so well

Three sugars and a splash of daddy, please - this one is HILARIOUS, but also not canon compliant, so the characters are very OOC

Mors et Tempus - slytherin harry in the 1940's, what more could you ask for

Times of Peace - ptsd ridden harry is so dear to me

Trapezing Through Time - master of death harry is sooo satisfying, and the writing in this one is top tier

Psychopomp - very satisfying dumbledore bashing in this one

alright alright alright, i'm about to get into youth by @olivieblake!!! it's a prequel to clean/marked, 23 chapters, rated M, and just over 100K words! i am just absolutely positively in love with olivieblake's writing and clean/marked, so naturally i had to spin the block and come back for this story 😭😂

no let me tell u, this was me, yelling on the phone with my friends last night about clean/marked:

in any case, i'm excited as hale for this fic! it's a marauder's era fic (so not dramione... so while excited i am uncomfortable but i trust the author with mine eyes) and i have only read one other marauder's era fic EVER and i loved it. this fic is sure to be heartbreaking in all the right ways. there are multiple POV's so i can't wait to get into the characterization of each person. *rubs hands together vigorously*

Suddenly, there was a shout from the Hufflepuff table. “Look!” exclaimed Hannah Abbott, pointing at the enchanted ceiling. “It’s snowing!”  Harry looked up, and was nearly hit in the face by a piece of parchment. He grabbed it to see that it was titled Lady Polixenes’ Hogwarts Secrets, Issue 7.  All around them, leaflets of parchment were falling out of the rafters. Students were brushing leaflets off of their food, slipping on loose sheets, flinging them at one another. A sleeping Neville Longbottom over at the Gryffindor table was quickly covered in a mountain of parchment. Up at the High Table, Dumbledore was watching the mayhem with great amusement, while Umbridge had gone rather purple-faced trying to destroy all of the falling parchment without setting the rest of the Great Hall on fire.  “STOP IT!” she bellowed, as some of the first-years started to jump around, plucking papers out of the air. “Do not read these! These leaflets are illicit publications, and I forbid you to read them!”  No one, however, seemed to be listening to her. Professor Liu, who had finally deigned to start taking meals in the Great Hall again, was openly reading a leaflet in the seat right next to Umbridge. Professor McGonagall and Severina were both surreptitiously tucking their own copies into the folds of their robes. Students from all four houses were also sneaking copies of the leaflets, though some of their peers—especially at the Slytherin table—were trying to help Umbridge destroy the rest.  “Detentions!” howled Umbridge. “Detention to anyone caught with a copy of this pernicious Lady Polixenes!” Election Year has hit New Avalon, and everything is changing. This year, Lord Harry of the Honourable and Most Ancient House of Potter must navigate the chessboard of Pureblood society, whilst dealing with the appointment of a despotic High Inquisitor to Hogwarts, internal strife amongst previously-unshakeable friend groups, and his own confusing teenage feelings. Since I'm still procrastinating "Choices" (okay, actually I'm still healing from the severe heartbreak it caused) I read „Quite like us“ and "blue and yellow skies" by @alarainai and „salmon_says“. For those of you who need and love (somewhat fluffy) Jegulus AUs these might be it.

Quite like us (67k): The story is placed in the real world, like without magic at all. James is a physiotherapist and Regulus studies to become a veterinarian. They make contact via a text message from James that was meant to be send to Sirius. They don't know who the other person is but start a conversation nonetheless. It may sound a little odd at first but I really liked how different it was. Especially since the first part is almost exclusively written as text messages. But yeah - check it out. It’s a really nice short fanfiction! Also it hit a little too close to home when some teen angst was discussed. But I sirius-ly loved how they chose to deal with it and "solve" the issues. Know your worth you lovely people!

Blue and Yellow Skies (142k): Okay this one is an AU where Regulus and James are both professional Quidditch players. It's rivals-to-lovers and was executed perfectly (imho). They managed to capture James and Regulus so well. While Regulus has some a lot unresolved feelings, James is just..well he's James. He's utterly, idiotically and irrevocably in love with Regulus. So you bet it's an utter mess when they find themselves in a fake relationship with the press and public constantly in their faces. This story deals with some sirius issues as well. I think the bottom line is that it's okay to set boundaries because you can't fix another person. It's not your job and you shouldn't let them run around hurting you. There comes a point where you have to choose yourself in order to survive. But then, there is always two sides. And it's okay to take some time to heal and ask for forgiveness. Also Rosekiller is a definite plus for this work of art!

Unlikely and unwilling allies, the pair begin a cross-country journey where their survival depends on learning when to stand strong against the elements’ fury, and when it’s acceptable to erode.

so, yes, i would absolutely, no questions asked, recommend Time and Tide. but this fic is not my typical dramione fic rec whatsoever. at 10 chapters and under 30k words, it is pretty short, so there's no slowburn there. their relationship builds pretty quickly, but not abruptly. hermione being a selkie is one of the biggest story points in this fic, which i loved. i don't feel like i see many creature!hermione fics, honestly. the most notable feature of this fic, though, is just the writing itself. i mean, it's beautiful. you can absolutely tell the author is a seasoned and talented writer. for a short fic, the characterization is great and the entire time i was practically screaming, "PLEASE WORK OUT PLEASE GET SAFE PLEASE BE HAPPY" at my kindle.

also, for the record, there are two endings to this fic. one is HEA, but one is not. both contain smut. i read both because of course i did. the non-HEA version felt a little rushed and...underbaked? i don't love criticizing the work that amazing fic authors do for free, but it is worth noting. if you are going to read one ending, i highly suggest the HEA one, not just for your own mental health, but also for the story. the HEA one isn't even totally HEA, so the edginess is still present!

All of her work is great and stand out on their own merits - but I come back to these when I need a really good laugh because she really understands those awkward early teen years so well.

FloreatCastellum has retired from fanfiction to pursue original works, but her backlog is extensive, interesting and engaging. Order of Mercy - by MandyinKC

I'm very past due to reread this - she started posting this on FFN when I was teaching in South Korea and I remember reading the updates in the evening before bed. It's a fantastic take on another prospective on the last book and probably did play a part in my own writing. This is one of the best takes on an alternate prospective of Deathly Hallows from the shared prospectives of Bill, Fleur, Percy and Audrey as they form their own small resistance group.

Irrational - by RonsGirlFriday (aka @constitutionalweasleymonarchy on this hellsite)

This is the fic that made me appreciate the first person prospective and showed me what kind of strong character voice that can offer. The way Audrey is written here is fantastic, she's quiet, observant and is going through her very quiet life as it begins to shift through meeting new people. The story is not overwhelmed by an intense narrative, it's a quiet day to day sort of story. This is one of the primary inspirations for the POV for One for Sorrow and its early tone before the madness set in. I will drop everything I'm doing if I get word of an update or new publication.

I know this fandom has taken off in recent years and has a lot of good fics, I don't have time to go through them all these days but I can recommend this one with confidence as a long, extended epilogue to book 3 of the series from the prospective of the elderly housekeeper as she ends up in a web of well-meaning secrets between her employers. It's very well written, very funny and a reminder that all secrets come out eventually.

Daddy Long Legs - Jean Webster

This is one of the finest epistolary novels. It's short and covers about four years of Judy Abbott's life as a college student paid for by an unknown benefactor. This book is a product of its times in regards to race and class politics of the era. If that's not something you want to go through, that's fine, some kind soul has rewritten the novel for modern sensibilities and has lost none of what made the original novel so endearing.

No words for this modern Beauty and the Beast AU. It's well written, engaging and a character study in the guise of... I just don't want to say modern fairy tale, because it's a good definition, but it's ultimately a story about two lonely people coming together. Unfinished, but great!

New things I tried: This is the first year I've really written a lot fanfic-wise, with 2023 being the first year I ever posted a fanfic, so the main new thing I tried this year was writing fanfiction. But other than that, some new things I tried this year were:

Grammarly: I'm not kidding, I got Grammarly like maybe a year ago? A year and a half ago? So while technically in 2023, I only started using it for fanfics in 2024. It feels crazy to think about, as I use Grammarly a lot now, but I'm glad I started using it then because it really does make a difference. (Not sponsored, lol)

My Hero Academia: I wasn't in the fandom before this year, but I've kinda become obsessed. I haven't written anything for it (yet), but the sheer number of like hundred thousand-word-long fics that there are is like heaven for me.

Yuri on Ice: I originally watched Yuri on Ice on YouTube in 2021, and I. Loved. It. I looked for a second season and was so excited to see that there was a movie planned, but, well... we all know how that went. I didn't really read many fanfics back then, but 2024 was the year for Yuri on Ice fanfics for me. (Notedly my YOI one-shot series Next Level, which currently has 6 fics and the 200+ YOI fics I've read over 2024)

Fic I spent the most time on: lookin' up now ('cause i am royalty), Luke Castellan/Percy Jackson (PJO). Rated T, 16/? chapters, 64,387. I know I keep mentioning it, but seriously this WIP is going to be long. I'm so excited to keep writing it, but the chapters take me forever and a day. 😭 I wish they didn't take me as long, but I think it's worth it for the longer chapters. This fic is what I always wanted to read myself, and I'm happy to be the one to give it to many readers who are also just as excited about it!

Fic I spent the least time on: Moonlight Sonata, Katsuki Yuuri/Victor Nikiforov (YOI). Rated G, 1,482. I was feeling really depressed at the time that I wrote this, and sometimes when I'm feeling really sad I listen to piano and instrumental music. So when this song came on, I got inspired to write. I wrote it in one night, editing, tagging, posting, and all.

Favorite thing I wrote: Moonlight Sonata is honestly my favorite thing I've ever written. It's the type of fic that I don't think many people read, but I loved writing it. It's just a simple story. (lookin' up now ('cause i am royalty) is also one of my favs, but I think that's pretty obvious at this point if you've read all of my previous answers)

Favorite thing I read: This is a tough one... I've read a lot of fics this year, but my top three (that I can think of right now) are:

We Forgot Peter by inkinmyheartandonthepage [Peter Parker & The Avengers (MCU), Rated G, 506,700]: This entire series is just ✨perfection✨. Sometimes angst is just the way to go, and seeing as I love the Avengers and Peter Parker, I just love this.

Leap of Faith by alighterwood and ErinWantsToWrite [Dick Grayson & Peter Parker (MCU & DC), Rated T, 460,010]/A Long Way From Home (And No Way Back) by Vivia_wants_boba [Batfamily Members & Peter Parker (MCU & DC), Rated T, 78,129]: More marvel Peter Parker fics, but this time these two are Peter Parker in Gotham fics. They’re pretty popular (for good reason!), and these two are the ones that I’ve been obsessed with.

The Collector by AwkwaAMO [Aizawa Shouta | Eraserhead & Midoriya Izuku (MHA), Not Rated, 136,945]: One of the best MHA fics I’ve read so far, it sort of covers a vigilante Izuku with a villain-ish quirk, which I love reading about. I do want to write an MHA fic at some point, maybe even in 2025.

Something I finished: 😬 Unfortunately I can’t really think of any fics or series I’ve finished this year (other than one-shots), but I think 2025’s the year for me. I might look at this at the end of next year and still be disappointed in myself that I didn’t finish anything, but I’m determined to at least try.

Miscellaneous highlights:

I followed the (slightly old) trend of Yuuri doing the first quad axel in my fic aptly named Quad Axel [Katsuki Yuuri/Victor Nikiforov (YOI), Rated G, 1,416] in June as well

Writing goals for 2025: My main writing goal for 2025 is to finish writing some of my WIPs, but I think another important one is to keep on top of updates. I haven’t been the best with updating all my fics in the last half of 2024, so in 2025 I want to make sure I don’t just spend all my time on one fic. It wouldn’t be that big of a problem if I actually finished that fic, but… my first goal is pretty indicative of the problem with that, lol.

Final thoughts: Overall I think 2024 was the first year I really dove head-first into fanfic. It’s been amazing to be able to write down any kind of story I think of and know that I can just upload it so that people who also enjoy the idea can see it. It’s also crazy that I wrote 130,000+ words, like I hope to be able to write even more in 2025, but still. It’s a lot.

This year I also got 32 subscribers to my AO3 profile, which I thought was crazy. I know many people subscribe to stories to keep track of any updates, but wanting to keep track of what I write? It’s amazing to think about. 😅

Okay, quick background I have read and listened to a many Dramione. I don't consider myself an all knowing, but I have some over analyzed thoughts on this subject.

I am not done listening to this story. This is subject to change possibly....

Let's begin..

Isolation is considered a top tier dramonie fanfiction. I am currently listening to the story and understand that may not allow me to dive into it as much as I would like.

I have the thus far considered the story ...... interesting but not inciting.

PLOT: picks up after HBP (half-blood prince) Hermione does not go on the quest for the horcrux instead stays to help Hogwarts. Ron and harry go off send her owl every fortnight, Hedwig is not dead nor Moody eye. The events of that night never happen. Professor Snape shows up with Draco Malfoy looking for somewhere to hide him. Snape did kill Dumbledore and Malfoy did let in the death eaters so he is considered partially responsible. McGonagall task Hermonie to take in Draco in her dorm as prefect she has a dorm with 2 rooms. He can't leave so Isolation. They live like that for a while and eventually begin a sexual and emotional relationship. Around January the ministry is taken the death eaters are going to Hogwarts to get all the muggle born wizards. Here is when Hermione and Draco get separated. He gets sent to his Andromeda Tonks and she to her daughter Nymphadora Tonks. so far--

Smut.... good. The smuts good I definitely think that really helps in the overall rating. In order to have a well written fan fiction the fantasy of a good fuck is paramount. That being said the over all tone of when they did the deed varied. He NEEDS her. He listens to her soothing noises when she showers. They do it to vent yet it does become this sweet thing that they can cherish. They also have many sweet moments. Personally them reading together is sooo cute. ughhh shakespare. omg.

Hermione's depth. unfortunately, I have not yet experienced the power of this character. She lacks something of self-driven force. she was never the most confident person but in this version she withers at the hands of Draco. Leaving a bad taste. I did appreciate the MLK bit when she's trying to convince Draco of the 'mud blood' word basically being racist. I don't really feel like Shes helping in the war effort much. She has literally only read books. This is halfway through may change. AT this point we will see if their affection for each other goes beyond being stuck together.

DRACO is a fun character to analyze he changes so much depending on the story. THIS IS A TOXIC MANNNNN. He is cussing everyone out Hermione, McGonagall, himself. I don't love that every other word he says is Fuck. fucking. Hell. It lacks the sophistication of noble born pure breed wizard that's all I'm saying. IT IS REFREASHING to SEE Draco Malfoy be in need. He needs Hermione beyond his eventual attraction, he needs her to keep himself from going crazy and not give him up to death eat. He is forced to trust her well before she ever really has to trust him truly. I dislike how difficult it is for him to truly consider having given up the death eater life. He grapples with it; I get that he does not throw off everything has learned. But he doesn't on his on consider that being force into isolation because he couldn't kill Dumbledore. Might be that moment he realizes ' oh I don't want to do this. ' Hermione' Is cramming that done his throat making it feel just forces. HE also yells at he a lot in the first bit to leave him alone.

FANFICTION REVIEW

"The Rat and the Snake" by @artemisia-absinthium-blog

I finished reading this story, the first part, yesterday and I must say that it was a great discovery. It's a very interesting What if that investigates what would have happened if Snape had started actively spying for Dumbledore within the Order. He arrives to discover Peter's betrayal in time. Snape is absolutely in character. I found him very credible. He is a tormented, dark boy looking for his place in a world that has trampled him. The relationship with the members of the order is as tense as a violin string. The contempt that James has for him is palpable, as is Severus' difficulty in relating to Lily and little Harry. everything is just perfect.
