"adieu to all sorrow and care", AMC's The Terror, Silna/Goodsir

The title of this fic comes from the Stan Rogers version of "The Maid On The Shore", which is permanently a Silna song for me -- the predicament of the heroine in it is like the nightmare rapey version of what she endures with the Terror crew and she's able to escape through her nerve, her singing voice, and maybe some magic. The theme in some versions of the song that the heroine must be something other than human (a mermaid, a siren) to get away with what she does and that feels like a Silnamood.

Right away this fic gets into my Harry D.S. Goodsir Sex Life Headcanons! He's unmarried but he's a very appealing guy and it's easier to picture him having more modern arrangements for sex and intimacy while at home in Scotland, figuring out mutually beneficial situations with brainy and interesting but not especially marriage-minded women. He's projecting a little in his understanding of Silna as a lady bachelor, but he's right that she's hungry for companionship without the patriarchal baggage, and they're on a wavelength at last now where that's something he can do his best to provide.

A big part of this fic is Goodsir wanting and trying to understand Silna better -- giving them dream encounters was one way of connecting them but they're also just sharing a lot of private and informal intimacy in a way that's really antithetical to Victorian mores and to shipboard life. (Her NAKED! ANKLES!!!! Okay so that's more of a joke about the Victorians than a reality but there's still something terrifically sexy about seeing someone undressed after a long day, having them be vulnerable with you. Likewise, characters taking down or unpinning their long hair will always be the absolute peak of intimacy for me in a historical context.) I am a person with permanently warm extremities so having someone cuddle up with you and torment you with their cold feet sounds absolutely ideal.

Silna suffers so much in this series and Goodsir's death is such a gut-punch that I just wanted to write the two of them having some absolutely ridiculous worshipful fluff.
