as you can tell, team 1 usually wins on JP, and on EN (at least from what I remember), team 2 usually wins. however there are instances of the same team winning on both servers, such as dark chocolate during White Day and garbage puyo during CGO. usually the same team will hold a lead throughout the entire event and then win, so if you want to join the winning team a good tip is to just pick one when it forces you, then check what team the majority of the top 100 is in like a day before first midterm and change if you need to bc the team the tierers are in will probably win.

I returned to the home Katara and I shared in the city we’ve now named Republic City. I have been gone for a few weeks as my ongoing search for lost airbender history continues. I decided to maintain a semi-permanent home in the city to show my allegiance to the new ways we have chosen to govern the world, post war.

We know that balance can only be maintained through hard work. I know Katara has missed being in the south but my job as the Avatar makes it hard to be selfish and put our wants above the needs of the world.

When I arrive home there’s a flurry of movement in the bedroom. I can hear Katara pacing back and forth. She’s moving frantically and hasn’t noticed I’ve arrived.

“Gone for weeks and not even sending a carrier eagle to tell me when he will get back” she mumbles. “I’m sick of being left behind, let’s see if he likes it huh, I’ll just take a little vacation back to Wolf Cove…” she’s still talking softly under her breath when she turns the corner out of our room, almost walking right through me and colliding with my chest.

“Baby? Are you going somewhere?” I ask gently, holding her shoulders steady and feeling as they rise and fall with her deep breaths. “Yes. I’m leaving. Going home for a while.” She barks out, only anger lacing her tone as she speaks.

“Leaving? I thought we agreed to make this our new home? I understand if you need to visit your family, but, you’ll come back? Right?” I ask, trying and failing not to sound like a pathetic lizard-guppy.

“No, You agreed to make this your home Aang, I don’t remember really being included in that conversation. Or really any conversation lately, it’s like you don’t even have time for me anymore.”

Her shoulders loosen slightly but she doesn’t lose the edge in her eyes, “but I’m going home, back to Wolf Cove to be with people that care about me, that actually notice when I’m around. People that want to talk to me and include me in their plans, that used to be you. I guess not anymore.” She shakes my hands from atop of her shoulders and tries to maneuver around me.

I turn around, letting her pass but quickly follow her as she makes her way to the front door. “I‘ll go with you! We can make it a fun trip, celebrating our anniversary that’s coming up soon.”

She huffs an annoyed breath and stops just before the door. “Surprised you would have even remembered, I seem to be the last thing on your mind lately. It’s just your precious Republic City!” Her voice rings out with the last of her sentence, her emotions taking control and I’m taken aback by her outburst.

“What do you want me to say Katara? I thought you understood that this was my life.” My power pulses as my heart rate elevates. “I have a duty to restore harmony after the war, I owe it to the nations after being gone for a hundred years while people suffered under the Fire Nations rule” this fight between Katara and feels as though it’s been repeating for months.

“Duty! Honor! That’s all you care about Aang, all you talk about since the war ended. You didn’t find redemption in defeating the Fire Lord? You helped the nations unify and yet still you are gone for weeks on end dealing with every issue that pops up.” Katara’s eyes gleam with tears “I’m going home Aang. Alone”

“Katara please, don’t just leave, let's talk about this.” I gasp her arm in a silent plea for her to stay, “I’m sorry if-“ I try to apologize but she just holds a hand up in exhausted defeat. “I know Aang, I know you’re sorry. And if we talk you’ll make promises to me that you’ll never keep. I just need some time, sokka sent me a message about some hunters that haven’t returned from their hunt so I’ll help him with that. Spending some time with my family is what I need right now.” She moves her hand to lay on top of mine that’s circling her arm. “I thought we were family.” I say in an almost silent voice.

“I had always thought we were Aang, I love you but I can’t do this if you’re never around. We were a team and now you do everything on your own. Maybe I need to be alone for a while too”

Leaving out the front door I follow behind to see a small fire nation airship hovering overhead, “what is this?” I ask, confusion written all over my face. We both look up as our friend Zuko slides down the rope ladder. I try to fight down the hot fire of jealousy that boils in my gut. “You called Zuko? If you wait just a day Appa could take you and we could talk, I don’t want you to leave like this”

I am practically begging but she ignores my pleas and offers a sad greeting to our friend. “Hi Zuko, thank you for offering to take me today” she tells him calmly and he offers her a gentle smile. When his gaze shifts to me it’s a mix of understanding and conflict. “Aang, how are you? You’ve just returned from the eastern air temple? Any luck in your search.” He asks politely.

“The search goes well, thank you friend.” I bow my head slightly towards him as a sign of respect.

Katara turns to me with tears shimmering in her eyes, “continue your search Aang and your job as Avatar but search for where I am meant to fit into any of it as well. I will not force myself in your life. I need time..” the tears have began streaking down her golden brown skin and I gently swipe them away. “I will always have room for you in my life, my love, but I understand I have failed you. I will work to prove to you that it’s true.” I wrap my arms tightly around her and bury my nose into her hair, breathing in her scent and committing it to memory not knowing how long she will need to be away, not knowing how long it will take to win her back.

“I will miss you Katara” I whisper to her and all she can offer is a broken sob as she disengages from our embrace and rushes towards the ladder to head up into the ship.

Zuko approaches me and we share a friendly hand shake, “I will ensure she arrives at the South Pole safely and report back once I’ve arrived back,” he tells me and I let out a ragged breath. “I can’t believe I’m losing her like this Zuko, I failed her more than anything else.” My voice is raw and full of emotion that I can’t contain. “You will not lose her my friend. I have struggled with the same things in my relationship with Mai, prove you can be just as committed to her as you are to being the Avatar.”

“I want to! That’s why I don’t want her to leave!” I lose control of my air for a moment and send a gust and shift the ladder as it hangs causing it to sway.

“You have to let her make her own choices Aang, let her decide and make an effort to be what she needs.” Zuko puts his hand on my shoulder and squeezes slightly, “you need to be the man you are not the Avatar right now, she doesn’t need the Avatar. She needs you.” His grip lightens and he back up towards the ladder, offering a smile and a goodbye he heads up and within a few minutes the ship is moving and out of my sight taking my greatest love further and further away

It has tiny white wings tipped with a pale pink, adding to its delicate appearance.

Passestica: Grass, Diligent Sparrow Pokemon; Passestica evolves from Foglino, growing slightly larger with more defined features. Its feathers darken to a deeper green, and its wings become more robust, allowing it to perform aerial maneuvers with precision. The lace collar evolves into a more pronounced maid-like apron, and its eyes now show a determined expression. It also sports a small broom-like tail, which it uses to keep its surroundings clean, reflecting its diligent nature.

It is always seen with a small feather duster-like wand, which enhances its psychic powers.

Special Hidden Ability: Orderly Mind- The Pokémon’s mental focus is so strong that it is immune to confusion and Taunt. It also boosts the accuracy of all moves by 10%.

Water line

Knuppy: Water, Guppy Squire Pokemon; Knuppy resembles a young catfish with a body that starts thin at the head and thickens towards its middle. It has a small knight's helmet that sits snugly over its head, with tiny decorative horns on the sides. The helmet's faceplate is always open, revealing its curious and slightly mischievous eyes. Its whiskers are short and stubby, resembling the tips of a knight's lance. Its body is covered in smooth scales that have a slight metallic sheen. The tail is fin-like, similar to a fish but with a hint of a knight's cape flowing in water.

Welritter: Water, Fish Knight Pokemon; Welritter is the evolved form of Knuppy and appears as a more developed and sleek version of its pre-evolution. It has grown larger, and its helmet has become more elaborate, featuring a closed visor that it lifts when preparing for a charge. Its whiskers have grown longer and sharper, like a pair of elegant swords. Welritter’s body now has distinct armor-like scales covering its upper half, and its tail fin has become more defined, resembling a flowing cape. Its eyes are sharper and more determined, symbolizing its readiness to prove its worth as a knight.

Weflucht: Water/Ghost, Phantasmal Knight Pokemon; When Welritter evolves into Weflucht, it takes on an ethereal and spectral appearance. The helmet has become more like a spectral hood, covering most of its face, with only its glowing eyes visible through the darkness. Caldocipe: Fire, Prince Pokemon; Caldocipe evolves into a larger, more formidable form. Its quills have grown longer and now form a fiery mane that cascades down its back like a regal cloak. Branch couldn’t take any more of this.

He felt like he was seconds away from biting off his own tail—but Bella and Daffy just would. Not. let. UP! The stupid bracelet holding his wrist in a vice grip as Bella directed him through the choreography wouldn’t let up, either—not as long as Bella’s bracelet glowed and she exerted herself through him. They’d been practicing this set for hours. Branch was done.

But he couldn’t speak a word of his discomfort—not while the bracelet still held firmly to his wrist, pain throughout his body as Bella made him move to her liking. If he wasn’t singing in tune with Daffy, then he wasn’t making any sound at all.

“One more time!” Bella tittered, like she had been doing for the past hour. Daffy counted them off, setting the metronome as Bella began the opening number. Strings tightened inside Branch’s body, pulling him in every which way as he unwillingly copied Bella’s movements. Pain ripped up his throat like someone was pulling barbed wire out of his stomach, digging in until his whole mouth felt raw—and Branch’s voice sang the words in perfect harmony with Bella.

“I was there to witness / Candace’ inner business / she wants the boys to notice / her hairbows and harmonies—” He continued, dancing a perfect mirror to Bella’s own motions, Daffy singing along with the two of them.

Normally, Branch didn’t really mind singing. Enjoyed it, even—though that was a more recent development, he’d admit. But right now? He wanted nothing more than to return to his bunker, curl up in the smallest corner he could find, and just stop acknowledging the world entirely for several hours. He didn’t want to sing again for a whole week—not when his throat and chest and face were in agony from the constant pull of the bracelet’s hold on him.

More than that—Branch wanted Poppy. Wanted to bury his face in the crook of her neck and listen to her ramble about her day or sing whatever cheesy pop song was on her brain. Wanted to sit with her as she scrapbook, needle and thread in his hands as he worked on mending an old bag. Wanted nothing more than to see her face and her smile and eyes, to hear her voice and feel her paws against his. He wanted Poppy so badly it hurt—almost as much as this hairdamned bracelet.

Eventually, things wound down, and Bella released her hold. Branch crumpled to the floor, the pain in all of his joints intensifying as the strings went slack, and Daffy moved to catch him, holding him in place for a moment before lifting Branch back up so he was standing.

“You’re a natural, Branchy!” Daffy crowed, patting Branch’s shoulders with his paws. “You’re gonna knock their socks off!”

Branch grumbled. He wanted to go home.

“Nuh uh,” Bella chided, coming around from behind to poke Branch’s jaw. “No mumbling, young man. Speak clearly, or don’t speak at all.” She stepped back, looking him over. And then she clasped her paws together, “Oh, but I’m so proud! You’re just perfect.”

“I don’t want to be!” Branch snapped back. He was tired, and hungry, and cranky, his tail lashing behind him now that the bracelet wasn’t holding it still. He wanted to go home. He wanted Poppy. He didn’t want to be here.

“Don’t take that tone with your mother.” Daffy cautioned, expression cross.

“You don’t need to be so ungrateful, guppy.” Bella said, her tail brushing against Branch’s back. “We’re going to make you a star.” She smiled wistfully, face in her paws. “And when you go out there and wow the crowd…” She sighed dreamily.

“And how am I going to wow the crowds if I’m going gray?” Branch asked, arms crossed. “Did you think about that?” Indeed, he was already several shades duller than he had been before being kidnapped, and he had no doubt it was only going to get worse if this awful hell kept on going—which it probably would, given Branch’s abysmal luck.

Daffy hmmed. “He is looking kinda dull, Belody.” He muttered, nudging Bella’s side.

Bella’s lips pursed. “Oh, pshaw, that’s an easy fix!” She walked over to the vanity and opened one of the drawers, rooting around for a bit before pulling out—

“Fur dye?” Branch could not believe this. There was no way this would work! A Troll’s colors—especially their hair—were resistant to dyes. Only a Troll could change their hair color, and dyes always faded fast from their fur. That, Branch would know.

“Please,” Bella scoffed, “this is nothing like the dinky stuff you make from berries.” She held out the bottle, tapping it with a finger as she spoke. “This is premium stuff, straight from Vibe City! It’s guaranteed to last at least three weeks!”

Branch scoffed. “And what happens when it runs out? You try and dye me again? On and on, hoping nobody figures it out?” This whole farce was so stupid. “Just face it, your whole plan sucks!” Maybe if they saw the futility of all this, they’d let Branch go and never pester him again—oh what was he saying, of course it wasn’t going to be that easy.

“Now follow me down to it,” Bella started, her voice summoning a wash of background music as she grabbed Branch’s shoulder. “Just follow me down to do it,” She pulled Branch in close with an arm around his shoulders, “Nobody will know how you come, and you go for it~”

“Not gonna get dangerous,” Daffy picked up the melody, pressing in on Branch’s other side, “You don’t gotta worry ‘bout us,” He pulled Branch away from Bella with a spin, singing, “Somebody to give what you get / and you get what you need noowwwwwwwwwww—”

And then Bella had grabbed Branch back, shoving him over to the vanity. “And these lights get bright / so let me show ya—”

The lights around the mirror seared into Branch’s eyes as Daffy picked up where Bella left off. “Be so so so nice to know ya!”

Bella slammed the fur dye bottle on the vanity. “It’s as easy as / one, two, three, do you see what I do?” She shoved Branch down into the chair before yanking it back and spinning it around in one quick motion, “Truth or dare, yes, I double dare you! / You, you, me, now I think you got it! / One last breath and just spin the bottle nowww!” She spun Branch’s chair.

“You know you don’t need to be so worried,” Daffy sang as Branch spun until he was dizzy. He sung another line, but Branch couldn’t catch it past the sudden pull as Bella grabbed his paws and yanked him out of the chair.

“One, two, three, and I double dare me as welllll!” Branch sang unwillingly, his whole throat taut with the glow of his and Bella’s bracelets, arms spread wide and tail held still behind him.

Bella and Daffy looked at each other. “Truth, dare!” The bracelet’s hold released, and Branch slumped back into the chair.

“Dirty little secret,” Daffy sang, as Bella shoved the chair back towards the vanity, “Dirty little secret!”

“This’ll be our little,” Bella sang, running her paw down Branch’s arm as Daffy continued singing backup. “Dirty little secret, dirty little secret—”

“This’ll be our little—”

“Give into the slow descent,” Daffy cut in, slinging an arm around Bella and pulling her in close.

“Give into the trust to feel it!” Bella sang back, her tail twining with Daffy’s.

“Give into the push and the pull—” Daffy pulled her in closer, the two of them looking deep into each other’s eyes and… oh fucking hair, were they grinding on each other? “—and the forth and back!” Branch spun his chair around. He did not need to see his parents horndogging on each other!

“Ohhhh!” Bella moaned, her reflection in the mirror tossing its head back. Oh Troll.

“We’re not gonna slow you down,” Branch jolted as Daffy suddenly appeared beside him, still singing, “We’re not gonna hold you to it.”

“I guess it depends,” Bella sang, spinning the bottle in her paw and stroking Branch’s hair with the other, “In the end / after all we’re all friends here!”

“Heeeere!” Daffy sang.

“And these lights get bright / so let me show ya!” Bella swept her paw through the air, and through the music of her voice Branch could suddenly visualize the stage she wanted to put him on, bright lights bearing down on him as he stood before a faceless crowd.

“So so so so nice to know ya!” Daffy slung his arm over Branch’s shoulders, yanking him back up out of the chair. Bella grabbed Branch’s paws in her own and continued.

“It’s as easy as / one, two, three—” Bella pulled on Branch’s paws in a left right left pattern, making him dance with her without using the bracelet at all— “do you see what I do? / Truth or dare, yes I double dare you!” Both Bella and Daffy were singing in tandem, now, “You, you, me, now I think you got it! / One last breath and just spin the bottle nowww!”

“You know you don’t need to be so worried—” Daffy sang.

“Even though below I’m still thinking about it!” Branch sang as the bracelets lit up again, his throat twisting in on itself to get the words out, “One, two, three, and I double dare me as welllll!”

Bella and Daffy grinned. “Truth, dare.”

“Dirty little secret, dirty little secret,” Daffy maneuvered Branch back to the chair.

“This’ll be our little,” Bella uncapped the bottle and turned on the sink.

“Dirty little secret, dirty little secret,” Daffy folded back Branch’s vest, tossing it to the side.

“This’ll be our little,” Bella was already pouring the dye out into a bowl.

“Dirty little secret, dirty little secret,” Daffy started applying the dye to Branch’s chest.

“This’ll be our little,” Bella began to comb the dye into Branch’s hair.

“Dirty little secret, dirty little secret!” Daffy dabbed dye onto Branch’s arms and legs.

“This’ll be our little!” Bright blue was starting to bleed all across Branch’s fur and hair, fighting the dull blue tones he naturally had. The next several moments were a whirlwind of motion light and noise as Bella and Daffy tugged him this way and that to the rising music, applying fur dye and pulling out a blow drying and rinsing their paws off in the sink and so on and so forth until Branch was lost in the motion, unable to resist the sheer momentum of their movements, a scream building in his throat in harmony with the music as they pulled him up and dragged him over to the floor-length folding mirror beside the wardrobe—

Silence for a single second as Branch took himself in. Gingerly, he reached up to touch a paw to his face, amazed when the dye didn’t smear. He looked… he looked like he had when he sang for the first time in that cauldron a year ago. He looked bright and alive, the dye somehow hiding the circles under his eyes.

He looked happy. He looked like someone else entirely.

And then the music picked up again, and Daffy was digging through the wardrobe as Bella sang. “One, two three, do you see what I do? / Truth or dare—” Daffy joined in, the two of them singing in harmony, “yes, I double dare you! / You, you, me, now I think you got it!” Daffy shoved a new vest up onto Branch’s shoulders as Bella worked his hair with a brush. “One last breath and just spin the bottle nowww!”

“You know you don’t need to be so worried,” Daffy sang, as Bella grabbed a pair of sunglasses, “Because we’ll control and you’ll stop thinking ‘bout it!”

“One, two, three, and I double dare me as wellll!” Branch sang, automatically, without the bracelet activating at all. He realized immediately what he had done—but he couldn’t take it back.

Bella and Daffy grinned at each other as Branch looked at himself in the mirror. “Truth, dare!”

The music petered out. Branch looked at himself, dyed and dressed. The sunglasses had one lens shaped like a star and the other like a heart. He looked and felt ridiculous. Bella put a paw on his shoulder.

“Of course, this isn’t really the full look,” She said, like Branch gave a damn, “There’s some makeup I wanted to try, and those shorts—” She grimaced, and Branch bristled. They were good shorts! They’d held up for years, and had more years in them yet! So what if they didn’t fit with the glossy, glamorous vest he was wearing? He’d prefer his usual leaf vest over this any day!

But… as Daffy and Bella talked over him, discussing event times and promotional posters, Branch’s mind circled back to the end of the song. He’d… sung his line, without any real prompting, and with the bracelet off the whole time. His voice had been raw, sure, but—he had sung along. That… that couldn’t possibly be good.

He’d already known things were bad the first time Bella had used the bracelet to control him, but this? Things were only going to get worse from here, Branch knew.

He just hoped he’d still be intact by the end of it all.

Music I Liked in 2024

Every year I reflect on the pop culture I enjoyed and put it in some sort of order.

What to say about the Music I spent the past year listening to? 2024 another year without much discovery for me, with no debut albums or artists making my regular rotation. I also probably didn’t listen to as much music overall as some recent years, so perhaps continuing to even recap this medium has become tedious or futile. That said, I still enjoyed a lot of releases by both perennial and newer favorites, so here’s a list (again alphabetized by artist) of 15 albums worth taking for a spin.

Abandoned Pools – The Haunted House

Tommy Walter’s project (perhaps most famous for the theme song to Clone High) returned for the first time in over a decade with a beguiling new collection of moody and moony melodies.

Bonny Light Horseman – Keep Me on Your Mind/See You Free

An ostensible double album (albeit one that fits on a single CD, if that’s your preferred physical media format), Bonny Light Horseman’s third record of signature neo-folk is no less warm and gorgeous than their prior outings.

Charly Bliss – Forever

Charly Bliss’ continued evolution from the 90s riot grrrl-inspired grunge of their debut Guppy to the pretty and polished power pop of third full-length Forever may be unexpected, but when the tunes are this good, who cares about any genre gate-keeping? Forever is a fantastic collection of shimmering songs about love and longing that deserve a bigger stage.

Coldplay – Moon Music

Is Moon Music top tier Coldplay? No. Is Moon Music a significant improvement over predecessor Music of The Spheres? Without a doubt, yes. Still finding the band in “global pop” mode, there are no shortage of the quasi-embarrassing BIG SWINGS found on any later-day Coldplay record, but the hooks are stronger and the emotions more deeply felt. Slot this one somewhere around Mylo Xyloto and Everyday Life.

The Decemberists – As It Ever Was, So It Will Be Again

The latest from Portland’s indie royalty has almost the flavor of a mixtape, with styles ranging from the Squirrel Nut Zippers-ish “Oh No!” to the country-tinged “Long White Veil” to the Picaresque-esque “America Made Me” to the 19+ minute prog mini-epic (aka the MOST Decemberists-ist) “Joan in the Garden.” A welcome return.

Geographer – A Mirror Brightly

Mike Deni’s newest collection of swoony synth-pop is decidedly upbeat affair, with lively melodies and sparkling hooks.

Pearl Jam – Dark Matter

There’s nothing exactly ground-breaking about Dark Matter, but it proves a solid outing from Eddie and the boys, mixing heavier fare like “Running” and the title track with the more introspective likes of “Wreckage” and “Won’t Tell.”

Snow Patrol – The Forest Is The Path

Snow Patrol may be well past their time in the spotlight, but Gary Lightbody and Co still know how to make deeply felt and searching rock music with this album of layered songs that get their hooks into you.

Tall Heights – Softly Softly

A return to more of the folk-inflected mode of their first couple albums (after leaning into a bit more of an electro-pop vibe on Juniors), Softly Softly has no shortage of hauntingly elegant harmonies and the unique sound that comes from instrumentation provided primarily by just a cello and acoustic guitar.

Travis – L.A. Times

Travis’ profile may not have kept pace with their peers Coldplay, but they’re also still reliably putting out new music and also released a new album in 2024. L.A. Times is a fine mix of pub-ready singalongs and signature evocatively yearning anthems.

Taylor Swift – The Tortured Poets Department

I can’t make any real claims to being a Swiftie, only favoring a couple of her “Eras” (Red and Everlore), and finding Midnights to be uneven at best, so I’m clearly not the best source for either the objectivity or subjectivity to appropriately rate TTPT.  And while I recognize that it isn’t the best album in her catalog, it is also the release I probably spent the most time with in 2024. The record’s introspective moods and interrogations of heartbreak were an apt soundtrack to most of my year.

Vampire Weekend – Only God Was Above Us

The fifth LP from Vampire Weekend manages to simultaneously sound almost nothing like what you might expect while still undeniably the work of this particular band. Tighter and more immediate but no less experimental than Father of the Bride before it, Only God Was Above Us proves that any release from Ezra and the Chrises is still appointment listening.

Young Oceans – Somehow I Know It’s Love

I’ve never been much for the bombast and performative nature of most “worship” music, but thankfully there are artists like Young Oceans creating meditative spiritual work more akin to art-rock that invites actual introspection.

Various Artists – American Football (Covers)

I came to American Football late, missing their 1999 debut when it arrived but discovering them upon their 2010s reformation and subsequent releases. I have since grown to love LP1 as well and its 25th anniversary brought not only a remaster but also this thoughtfully curated companion of covers. Artists including Iron & Wine, Blondshell, Ethel Cain and Manchester Orchestra interpret and interpolate the emo masterpiece in fittingly loving and lovely tribute.

Various Artists – I Saw The TV Glow OST

The soundtrack to Jane Schoenbrun’s 1990s-set psychological thriller is a perfectly evocative accompaniment to the film, with artists leaning into sounds befitting the era and aptly complementing its uncanny visuals.

Maioni was pissed. She thought the mortals should die. She thought it was our birthright to kill them. She thought it was our place to avenge our ancestors, our mermothers who came before us and were killed at his Grandfather's Grandfather's hand hundreds of years ago.

I beat her to her revenge. I didn't WANT to kill Patty. He was just a kid. He hadn't a single clue what his Pirate Grandfather's legacy was. It wasn't an easily digestible one to those who knew:

Kidnapping mermaids and sirens; raping them; letting his shipmates do what they wished with them; ripping their scales off one by one before coming up with the easier technique of just skinning them alive; cooking their flesh for meat; selling their fins to witches or to the first merchants he came across; stewing their half-mortal, half-mer embryos in a pot for soup; scalping them and selling their hair to wigmakers; carving their bones into swords and knives; tossing what very little was left of their corpses overboard for their families to find and bury what they could. 

After our ancestors exacted their revenge by eating his damn legs off, I thought the horrid history would finally end. I didn't want shit all to do with the mortals. I wanted to go about my peaceful existence of floating through currents, resting on a rock, combing my hair, singing the loveliest of songs, and luring some sailors to a blissful night among the coral. 

I could tell Maioni wasn't going to swim off about it though. And Elspeth was too guppy to repay a debt to Elliott. That was Patty's brother. She spent many nights retelling me the story. He'd thrown a party on his boat. The last he'd throw before he went off to school and started prioritizing his studies over fun.

She held herself up on the bow, listening to him sing as he cleaned up the mess his friends left behind. A pretty voice he must've had to entrance a siren. She beamed up at him with her worldful black eyes, the stars reflecting in them; her blue lips begging for a taste of his tongue, of his throat. Not like a vampyre's bite, but a siren's kiss. Just to feel where his enthralling voice vibrated from. Just to savor the harmony in his larynx.

He found her there and was too drunk to feel any fear. He couldn't see her tail, but he could tell just from her globe-like eyes and fish fangs that she wasn't human. He helped her up. Admired her teal green tail, her baby pink fins, her luminescent scales in the moonlight. She let him trace his fingers along them, the ultimate sign of trust--the ultimate intimacy--and even laughed when he flinched back at the sliminess. 

Then she revealed to him a secret kept from mortalkind. Sirens can transform at will, with great strength and control; an ability not possessed by mermaids. Mermaids can't possess legs at all. Not without a price. Not without a curse placed. 

She sang for him. They sang together. She refused to lure him. She wanted him to want her naturally, the way she wanted him. With a need that possessed her completely. And so on that boat and all night under the full moon, he had her. She gave herself to him completely. She loved him at first sight, and by morning, she was his. Only his forever.

She knew Elliott wasn't in town this very night. It was his brother who needed protection from Maioni's wrath. 

"Please, Alix," she wrapped her tail around mine, buried her head desperately in my shoulder as we road under the waves, just before the shoreline, "Protect him from her. I owe him that much."

And so I promised I would. I showed up at his party. I gave him a Siren's Kiss, a blessing of protection, and I pushed him into the water. He could breathe there, I was quite sure. I knew Maioni would try to reach him. She would sense I'd saved him. He couldn't be killed, not unless he willed himself to accept her offering. 

He wouldn't. And his friend saved him. The boy with dead blood circulating through his veins. Who would've thought? 

That was the last I saw of him. I jumped off the dock while everyone was distracted. Nobody would remember me. I'd made sure. I was an illusion. I wasn't real here.

Maioni was only partially livid with my heroism.

"Well, it's a job half-done." She smirked, swimming around me in circles before making a quick departure. 

I followed her current, my indigo-black tail was just as powerful as her lava red one. The only difference was in our fins, her rounded orange tail fin was no match for my forked ice blue tail fin. I caught up with her in seconds. I grabbed her by her long black braid and pulled her back.

"What are you talking about? He's safe. Nearly killed him, but I saved him." I crossed my arms. It was a brag. He'd thank me for the hypothermia, as long as he was still alive.

She pulled my hair back, barely. Just to get even. "Oh, you saved him alright. Can't say the same for the other murderer in his bloodline."

I was confused. Elliott was in college, and their only cousin was a maternal cousin. She could only be held accountable by the worshippers of the moon. I could smell that on her. The dog needed a bath. Only, a dry one. Water somehow brings their stink out more.

I didn't get the chance to ask. Elspeth's heart was shattered. Her pain was in the waves all around us, it dropped the entire bay by a couple of degrees; her cries wrought blood from my gills.

"What did you do?" I shoved her back.

She smirked, "I didn't do anything. The gods must've exacted their revenge. Can't say it wasn't just in time. And there's always next year for the other one. One more life extracted and there will finally be justice for our mermothers."
