I was listening to the new Hardcore History addendum (in typical Dan style it’s two hours of monologue about how time and intellectual distance squeeze the horror out of history and one hour of interview.) I was struck by the guest’s description of the Nazis as creating a state of exception wherein it was permissible even desirable to express all of the darkness within.

State of exception is amazing language. Because that’s what the banality of evil really comes down to. People behaving perfectly normal in some situations and doing absolutely unspeakably awful things in other situations.

People have permission to be evil because a legal or social authority is reassuring them that what is happening is justice. It’s fair. Some kind of respectable institution has adjudicated that the people to be targeted deserve what is happening and thus by attacking them you are removing a contagion rather than undermining the social contract by declaring someone to be outside of it.

The Purge is not a perfect analogy for the Holocaust but it’s possibly an even more relevant metaphor for what is happening in modern society. Explicitly the Purge is fair and just. It doesn’t explicitly favor anyone.

Yet implicitly it absolutely is anything but fair. The people with more social standing and resources can hunker down or equip themselves with the best tacticool gear. The poor get slaughtered and no one is supposed to object because the Purge is fair at the legal level.

Consider the vigilante and the cop who gets a pass on murdering unarmed suspects: state of exception. The victims are enemies of society, so a license is granted to violate the social contract.

no this is such an interesting question. all credit to oomfie @dwellordream and the sexy genius braintrust at iatc for discussing this earlier but like in summary. cersei and jaime initially fall out because she does genuinely like rhaegar, but that doesn’t last forever because she eventually still gets disillusioned because of rhaegar’s whole disaffection prophecy thing. i don’t think rhaegar runs off with anyone if he has no problem having kids in his first marriage. rebellion is probably between paranoid Aerys and Rhaegar-Tywin front, but they probably also fall out once tywin realizes rhaegar is not as easy of a puppet as his crazy dad. I think Cersei still eventually tries to have him killed, but because he is not an alcoholic manchild it’s significantly more difficult and she maybe fails at that maybe succeeds but looks incredibly suspicious. so they have a second smaller war about which of those kids are going to be the heir.

And I'll actually go further: the systems of measurement are not unbiased - they have their roots in assumptions that are kin to, if not directly identical to those made by eugenicists and scientific racists.

Because they are artefacts of a classification ethos that is, at best, merely 300 years old. Before that, guess what, the so called West didn't automatically categorise in binaries, or fit things in boxes. A text on snakes would include things that were associated with snakes as well. Remedies for bites would sit next to folklore on snakes, info about their habitat, ways to care or avoid them etc, as but one example. What we have now is a product of colonial attempts to systematise and codify the world as a result of shock at the sheer diversity of existences and varieties of life. That is, to capture and create an over-arching episteme and claim its universality. To dominate knowledge construction and say that this is the only way. It is not. There are other knowledge systems and epistemologies. Note: this isn't saying SCIENCE=Bad. But is saying that claims of universality and the assumptions of universality which undergird the so-called Western episteme have biases that need noticing and interrogating.

gem said she's building a castle. time to freak out.

a week or so ago I got annoyed at skizz for his "castle" being historically inaccurate, so much so that I developed a new obsession in castles and medieval architecture. In Gem's latest hardcore ep. she mentioned building a castle! I was so excited, but then I got worried because the definition of 'Castle' is kinda nitpicky.

The problem is that a castle is private, and gem is very dedicated to protecting and housing her villagers. BUT one way I could think of for Gem to have an actual castle, was if she had a bailey. A bailey is an enclosed courtyard, usually overlooked by a motte(elevated land on which (usually) a castle is built). And motte usually comes with a moat, but thats just getting into tangent territory atp.

Basically, what I'm saying, is that Gem could be a feudal lord/monarch who builds herself a castle, and builds a bailey for her servants to live in.

I'm probably just getting ahead of myself, BUT CMON SHE SAID CASTLE!!
