HAPPY 13TH ANNIVERSARY TO “HOLY FLYING CIRCUS” (2011) 🥳🎉🎊🎂🎈
(Aka the best Monty Python biopic imho)
It’s been 13 BLOODY years since HFC aired on this day (19th October) at 9:00pm on BBC 4 in the year of our lord 2011, but it’s only been a few months since I (and many other of my mutuals) watched and rewatched it this year, and I will always treasure the times that I have seen this wonderful movie!
I remember when I was a newly fresh faced MP fan in 2023 and was slowly and gradually getting into them, and that I was wondering if there was ever a biopic made about Monty Python? I mean, it would be kinda weird that there wasn’t a biopic made about Monty Python, ya’know considering that they were very much influential in the world of comedy and beyond, that it would obviously be a missed opportunity to NOT make a biopic about them.
I then went and logged on into one of the school computers at my secondary school to look up if there was a Monty Python Biopic, in which I googled smth along the lines of “Monty Python Biopic”, and LO and behold, HFC was (iirc) the first result that came up!
I was IMMEDIATELY intrigued to see what HFC was all about, and so I looked at and read the plot synopsis for HFC on IMDb. At the time, it was honestly really cool and interesting fr! Then I looked at the cast and…well. I wasn’t immediately put off by the fact that the cast for the HFC Pythons weren’t exactly 100% identical to the irl Pythons, like they were similar to them but JUST different enough to have a sorta distinct, uncanny feeling to them. But ngl, at the time when I saw photos of the cast, I did have a feeling that was like “ughh….this is soooo obviously cheap, why couldn’t they have gotten a bigger budget for this?”, and now looking back, I do recognise that HFC was, well, made on a BBC 4 budget (aka a low budget, at least for BBC 4) and that the cast and crew had to work with what they had (both in terms costumes and hair) and tbh I was kinda a bit mean on them at that time and that do I regret it. I mean, I still don’t forgive some of the HFC Pythons’ hair cuz OMG Steve Punt/Eric and Phil Nichol/Terry G’s hair is still kinda not good lol 😂 but I do understand why it is what it is.
Anyway, I digress!
It was because of this (plus looking at some rather quite negative reviews of HFC) that I STILL wanted to check out HFC and see what it’s about, but I had INCREDIBLY low expectations for it. At best thinking that HFC would be at least kinda decent, but at worst thinking that it would be kinda mediocre and not the worst but definitely not the best. So, for Christmas 2023, I asked my Dad (iirc) to buy me the DVD for HFC (as well as some other DVDs, those being “A Liar’s Autobiography” the book, the animated film adaptation “A Liar’s Autobiography” (2012), “Remember Me” (2014) starring Michael Palin, “A Field in England” (2013) and “In the Earth” (2021), the latter 2 cuz I was really into the League of Gentlemen/Inside No. 9/Reece Shearsmith at the time and also cuz I love me a bit of horror!). Then came January/February 2024, and I got my DVDs by that time!
(Here’s a crappy looking (affectionate) picture I took of them back in February when I still used my Android phone to take pictures of stuff)
Then I…..didn’t watch them (and in this case HFC) for a couple months after I got them (mostly due to school and exams and shit which made me kinda exhausted and so I didn’t watch much stuff during that time cuz of it), BUT! BUT BUT BUT!!
It was on a somewhat regular day on the 20th of May 2024, when I finally, FINALLY AFTER ALL THIS TIME OF LAYING IT OFF AGAIN AND AGAIN (again due to the exams and studying for said exams and shit) that I decided to finally get the courage to watch HFC in its entirety!! Also cuz I needed to give myself a bit of stress relief and also a lil reward for studying too much lol.
I got the HFC DVD from my living room shelf, I took the HFC DVD out from the plastic cover, I then got my DVD player and carefully inserted the HFC DVD into the DVD player so as to NOT potentially break it, and then…..I finally watched it.
It was…..quite the experience (and I mean this in the most positive way ever!)
Watching the film for the first time genuinely, like GENUINELY, floored my previously low expectations of it. Like, fr IT WAS CRAZY. AND AMAZING. AND WONDERFUL. AND SURREAL. AND FUNNY. Like, it was honestly the best thing I ever watched at that time!!
The HFC Python cast, who I thought was not gonna be the best, was actually fr incredible! Not only did they all get their respective irl Pythons’ mannerisms and expressions on point, but their unique take on each Python was genuinely charming and interesting fr! Especially Charles Edwards/Michael and Darren Boyd/John and their relationship between each other in the film was indeed very captivating to watch (and a lil gay and fan service-y, to which I also love it for that <33).
Speaking of which, Charles Edwards as Michael Palin was unironically the best thing about this film, not only for his voice and mannerisms but his character as well!! Like fr CHARLIE EDWARDS FR LOOKS LIKE ACTUAL MICHAEL PALIN LIKE WHAT?!!?!!
Darren Boyd as John Cleese was also quite great too, like, even if he portrayed him as the “Basil Fawlty Persona” version of John, I felt like it was still pretty much like John’s character, and Darren Boyd/John does show little moments of genuine vulnerability, which make it really more profound imo!
Rufus Jones as Terry Jones, Phil Nichol as Terry Gilliam, Steve Punt as Eric Idle and Tom Fisher as Graham Chapman were also pretty great in this as well! But ESPECIALLY Tom Fisher/Gray as HE ABSOLUTELY STOLE THE SHOW IN THIS MOVIE FR, AND THAT HE ABSOLUTELY SLAYED AS GRAY AND I LOVE HIS JACKETS, HIS SEXINESS, HIS QUOTES, HIS GAYNESS, HIS WISENESS, HIS EVERYTHING AGHHHHH (also he’s really beautiful imo). Like with Charles Edwards/Michael and Darren Boyd/John, their performances as their each respective Python was really amazing, such as Phil Nichol exhibiting Terry G’s childlike craziness and goblin-like energy, to Rufus Jones/Jonesy also acting/double role-ing as Michael’s Wife (in a loving homage to Jonesy playing most of the female characters in MPFC and the films with absolute PERFECTION) to Steve Punt/Eric being very much onto the business side of Python (in which he’s referred to as a “money grabbing bastard”, which I almost quote all the time haha).
Also shoutout to the supporting cast of HFC, they also carried the movie too! My personal favourites being Jason Thorpe as the rude and annoying and obnoxious boss (and very funny) Alan Dick and the LoB obsessed but with good intentions Christian with a stutter Desmond Lovely, Simon Greenall as the Pythons’ Manager/Film Distributor Barry, Paul Chahidi as the meek and trying to make things go well Harry Balls, and Stephen Fry as God (cuz Stephen Fry is an absolute ⚡️✨ ICON ✨⚡️fr)!
Oh yeah, also, I LOVE THE ANIMATIONS AHHHH THEYRE SO AMAZEBALLS FRRR!!!! AND I ABSOLUTELY LOVE LOVE LOVE THE MUSIC TOOO!!!! SHOUTOUT TO THE ANIMATION TEAM AND MUSIC COMPOSER FOR HFC, THEY DESERVE IT FR AND DESERVE ALOT OF APPRECIATION!!!
Also, this movie is fr so funny frfr, have I mentioned that it’s really funny? Cuz it’s really funny! It’s also (like Holy Grail) very quotable indeed, and there’s a lot like ALOT of quotes from HFC that live in my head rent free! My personal favourites among them are:
-“It’s Half Logical, Half Silly!”
-“Eric is a Money Grabbing Bastard!”
-“Glass of Cordial? S P O T O F S O U P ?”
-“Are you Willy waving at Jesus?”
-“Well, I am Gay, I like Neeews, it’s very good for film reviieeewwws 😌😏”
The ways this movie have changed my life for the better (and for the sillier) is that I’ve gone through the rabbit hole and have discovered many, MANY amazing shows and films starring each of the HFC Python actors, for example; “Treacle Jr” (2010) and “The Nine Lives of Tomas Katz” (2000) (both films starring Tom Fisher) are genuinely pretty great and I do recommend you watch them if you can! Plus I bought them and other projects starring each HFC Python on DVD cuz it shows how much I’m THAT dedicated to this movie (HFC) fr, and that I’m fr grateful for discovering this little BBC 4 Pythonesque comedy drama from 2011, cuz if i hadn’t, I’d have missed out on some real great stuff!
I will always love “Holy Flying Circus” (2011) for the rest of my life, and I will always appreciate and treasure it with my entire heart 🫶❤️, and I will continue watching and rewatching it and continue fanning about it into the future! I’m very lucky that HFC came into my life and that I watched it, and that I don’t think I’d be quite the same if I hadn’t the courage to watch the film on the 20th May 2024.
It’ll soon be almost 1 hour to the time (that being 9:00pm) when HFC aired on the 19th of October in 2011 by the time I’m writing this, so I’d like to quickly wrap up by saying:
Thank you “Holy Flying Circus” (2011). Just, thank you ☺️🫶❤️…..
And remember:
“Eric is a Money Grabbing Bastard”.

How Chemicals In Food Make Us Fat (Plus 10 Banned Chemicals Still in the U.S. Food Supply)
Did you know that you and I are genetically within 0.1% of each other?
That, the other 99.9% of our DNA is identical?
I had no idea about this, until of course, I started to learn about nutrition, weight loss and longevity.
And when I started to really learn about it, I realized that:
If millions of people (myself included) can lose tons of weight and get the body they've always wanted...you can too.
You see, the formula that worked for me and millions of others centers around the "foundation" of most successful long-term programs: healthy nutrition, proper movement, and inflammation-reducing herbs/techniques.
And something that fits very well in this "foundation" is the presence of very few, if any processed, factory-made, chemically-laden foods.
Because the truth is: one of the best ways to reduce (and keep off) weight for the long-term is keeping "industrial"/modern-era foods OUT of our diet (not including the "10% junk rule").
Essentially, this means cutting out foods that were, for the most part, invented in the last 50-100 years.
Before these foods became a part of our everyday diets, people lived (and thrived) on whole, natural, chemical-free foods. For hundreds upon thousands of years.
The simple truth is: Natural foods are significantly better for your body and health than are processed foods.
But sometimes that truth is too simple.
It's easy to say "eat natural", but what does that really mean? And why are processed foods so bad for you?
Well, we're going to dig deep here, so you understand the "background" stuff that no one is telling you (and likely, that few people except the real "go-getters" and non-conformists know).
If you eat a typical western diet...
Chances are you're taking in pesticides, insecticides, artificial colors, artificial flavors, emulsifiers, preservatives, and numerous other chemicals on a daily basis.
What few of us realize is that these chemicals are in just about EVERYTHING (that's not organic) and can cause serious health problems like diabetes, heart disease, Alzheimer's, cancer, and many more.
On the other hand, some of us do understand that these chemicals can lead to various diseases, yet we don't realize the drastic effect that these chemicals are having on our waistlines.
The negative effects on our weight are supported by the discovery of certain compounds known as "obesogens".
In 2002, researchers at the University of Stirling made a controversial claim: overeating and inactivity are not completely to blame for obesity.
So weight loss isn't just about eating less and exercising more? Mostly it is...but not entirely.
Read on, young Jedi.
Their research, which was published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, found that the rise in obesity correlated with the rise of chemical usage in food production.
They theorized that chemicals in our food, as well as chemicals in the environment, damage the body's natural weight-control mechanisms, thereby contributing to an inevitable obesity epidemic.
Now, evidence has mounted to prove their theory correct.
In addition to other known factors such as rampant Omega-6 intake, scientists have identified numerous chemicals commonly found in food which can cause obesity. One of the ways that these chemicals make us fat is by disrupting our endocrine systems.
These "endocrine disruptors" can cause weight gain by:
Triggering the body to make more fat cells
Slowing metabolism
Decreasing the hunger-regulating hormone leptin, thus increasing appetite and turning off the fat-burning signal.
Biologist Bruce Bloomberg dubbed these chemicals "obesogens."
In one of his studies, he found that rats exposed to obesogens produced more fat cells than rats which weren't exposed to obesogens - even though the rats ate the same diet.
Other studies have found that pregnant women exposed to obesogens passed the chemicals onto their developing children, thus "programming" the children for obesity.
Numerous other studies have also found direct links between obesogen chemicals and weight gain.
But what are these "obesogens" exactly, and where are they found?
Well, obesogens are found in nearly all processed foods.
And considering the fact that 90% of the American diet consists of processed foods, this should be of great concern to us.
Some of the most common obesogens found in food include:
Pesticides and insecticides
Fungicides
BPA (used to harden plastics and often found in food packaging)
PVC (commonly used in food packaging)
Genistein (found in many soy products)
Butylparaben (a preservative found in many foods and personal-care products)
MSG (an artificial flavor enhancer)
High fructose corn syrup
Let's delve a bit further into the last one on that list -- High Fructose Corn Syrup.
Of all the known obesogens, high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) may be the most concerning, simply because it is found in so many foods and beverages. Contrary to what many think, the fructose found in manufactured foods is not the same as the fructose in fruits. (And, also contrary to what many think, high fructose corn syrup is actually not that high in fructose.)
The real issue is that HFCS is made as the result of a chemical process, and our body reacts to it much very differently than it does to the natural sugars in fruits.
Like other obesogens, high fructose corn syrup causes the body to make more fat cells.
In one study by researchers at Princeton University, rats drinking HFCS gained more weight than rats drinking sugar water - despite the fact that they consumed the same number of calories.
And there is growing evidence of an even more "sinister" side of HFCS.
You see, research shows that high fructose corn syrup also makes appetite spiral out of control.
Normally, hunger is controlled by the hormones ghrelin and leptin. Ghrelin sends hunger signals to the brain whereas leptin tells the brain that we are full.
It seems that HFCS, unfortunately, triggers ghrelin production while blocking leptin production. A proverbial "double whammy".
The result? A chemically-induced craving for food which is very difficult, if not nearly impossible, to resist.
And as for other chemicals? Well, the bad news is they're "hidden" in hundreds of modern day foods...

Study: Youngest Children in Classrooms Frequently Mislabeled as ADHD – Drugged
by Paul Fassa Health Impact News
A recent study made some international mainstream papers recently that warned of medicating children misdiagnosed as ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), simply because they were the youngest students in their class.
UK's online Daily Mail included a quote from the lead author of that study, Dr. Martin Whitely, who stated:
“It appears that across the globe some teachers are mistaking the immaturity of the youngest children in their class for ADHD. Although teachers don't diagnose it, they are often the first to suggest a child may have ADHD.”
The Study Publicized is Actually a Recent Review of Several Similar Studies
The study was published by the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, and Allied Disciplines on October 14, 2018, with the title: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder late birthdate effect common in both high and low prescribing international jurisdictions: systematic review.
The “late birthdate” label describes situations where a child's birthday falls on a later date of the year than most of his or her classmates' birthdays. This potentially places that child at a less mature stage of development as the others in the same class.
A description of a child's behavior considered ADHD leads to a prescription of pharmaceutical psychotropic drugs that mimic cocaine and amphetamine, even to children four years old and younger.
The researches examined 19 studies in 13 countries that looked into over-diagnosing school children as ADHD, and they added another three studies that were related to bring the total studies reviewed at 22.
Because the 22 studies used too many divergent methods, the review authors used the systemic review method, which examines each study individually, instead of the meta-analysis method, which combines the statistics from the studies reviewed to form an opinion or conclusion.
They concluded:
It is the norm internationally for the youngest children in a classroom to be at increased risk of being medicated for ADHD, even in jurisdictions with relatively low prescribing rates. (Study abstract)
Pharmaceutical Drugs Used for ADHD are Dangerous for Everyone
Brand names Ritalin, or other generic methylphenidate drugs under different names, and Adderall are the most commonly prescribed drugs that combine mixtures of amphetamine salts, which are similar in effect and structure to what illegal “meth” labs produce.
The popular TV series “Breaking Bad” had that theme as its focus for increased violent behavior and addiction. The DEA classifies ADHD drugs as Schedule II, which is summarized as subject to abuse and addiction, explaining:
[ADHD drugs] produce discriminative stimulus effects similar to cocaine, will substitute for each other and for cocaine in a number of paradigms, and chronic high-dose administration of either drug in animals produces psychomotor stimulant toxicity including weight loss, stereotypic movements, and death, and in clinical studies, they produce behavioral, psychological, subjective and reinforcing effects similar to cocaine.
… this data means that neither animals nor humans can tell the difference between cocaine, amphetamine or methylphenidate when they are administered the same way at comparable doses. In short, they produce effects that are nearly identical. [Emphasis added] (Source)
Yet – Methylphenidate and amphetamine salts are the first-line treatments for ADHD … (Source)
The ADHD diagnosis starts with a school official or teacher's complaint to the parents or a higher up school official.
Orphanages and foster parents designated by Child Protection Services or similar agencies can also complain, and if parents refuse to drug their children they risk losing them to the State. See:
Ohio Parents Disagree with School Over ADHD Diagnosis – Lose 7 Year Old Son to CPS
Ultimately there's always an MD to diagnose ADHD and prescribe one of the drugs discussed. Psychiatrists are MD's, and only an MD can prescribe a pharmaceutical drug. Psychologists or counselors cannot prescribe any Big Pharma drugs.
On the other hand, whatever level of talk therapy psychiatrists were known for a few decades ago has been abandoned for one-time short visits for quick observations that lead to prescriptions for ADHD drugs.
If those drugs don't handle the symptoms, then other pharmaceutical psychotropic drugs are prescribed, such as drugs for anxiety and depression or even anti-psychotic drugs are prescribed.
The diagnosis of ADHD is based on observations of behavior. There are no blood tests, urine samples, brain scans, or other commonly-used medical tools to determine the purported chemical imbalances that these drugs are marketed as able to correct. However, treating ADHD is a multi-billion dollar industry. See:
Over 10,000 American Toddlers Are Being Given ADHD Drugs
The ADHD Diagnosis Used to Drug Children is Junk Science
youtube
The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, commonly known as the DSM with various numbered editions and considered the bible of psychological conditions, suggests that any MD without talk therapy or counseling experience can prescribe drugs with little to no patient interaction.
All the DSM does is describe observable behaviors and label them. For every label, there's a pharmaceutical “solution.” Recent editions of the DSM, such as the DSM-5, are put together by a “task force” containing only a few psychiatrists who meet and decide what needs to be amended or added to the most current DSM edition.
A few years ago, a retired psychiatrist stated that ADHD was a “fictitious disease” in a German magazine interview. He was involved with the task force that originally posited and recorded it as a disorder in the DSM-5.
He died a few months later claiming he had never intended it to be treated like a biological or biochemical disease. (Source)
Another psychiatrist who was also a DSM task force chairman, Allen Frances, stated:
“There are no objective tests in psychiatry-no X-ray, laboratory, or exam finding that says definitively that someone does or does not have a mental disorder. There is no definition of a mental disorder. It's bull-.” (Source)
All the drugs are intended to do is inhibit those behaviors. With children, that means a psychotropic drug can be prescribed from a book describing a set of behaviors decided by a small task force committee of prominent psychiatrists.
A very concise description the DSM-5 offers for ADHD is:
A persistent pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity that interferes with functioning or development.
It might interest you to look through a more complete list of behaviors to see how many apply to your kids or yourself when you were a kid. The point is, these behaviors are common to many kids and can be modulated with many natural solutions without side effects that will be discussed a little later in this article.
The brain chemical imbalance explanation of mental disorders or disease is not completely false. But the pharmaceutical industry should not be involved with it.
Orthomolecular psychiatry has successfully handled some mental disorders and dysfunctions with high doses of safe nutrient supplements.
It's easy to experiment with supplements and herbs since they're not dangerous. Then patient improvements can be directly noted clinically and continued from empirical evidence, or simply stated, seeing obvious results and using what works.
But MD psychiatry has mostly abandoned talk therapy and prefers the pharmaceutical stuff. The prescription pad has mostly replaced the notepad. And Big Pharma is happy to provide psychiatrists with drugs that aren't really fully tested for safety.
Postmarketing Ritalin has produced the following FDA reported side effects:
Sudden death in people who have heart problems or heart defects
Stroke and heart attack
Increased blood pressure
New or worse behavior and thought problems
New or worse bipolar illness
New or worse aggressive behavior or hostility
New psychotic symptoms (such as hearing voices, believing things that are not true, are suspicious)
New manic symptoms
Increased heart rate
Slowing of growth (height and weight) in children
Seizures
Eyesight changes or blurred vision (Source)
A list of Adderall side effects reported to the FDA include:
Aggressive behavior or hostility
Bipolar illness
Worse behavior or thought problems
Psychotic symptoms (hearing voices, believing things that are not true) or manic symptoms
Sudden death in patients who have heart problems or heart defects
Stroke or heart attack
Increased blood pressure and heart rate
Seizures and eyesight changes
Slowing of growth in children (Source)

Resolving Complaints of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Symptoms
There are three main avenues to help a child avoid being subjected to being medically-drugged, resulting in little to no progress, with considerable mental and physical adverse health complications.
Nutritional: This is a common area for ADHD symptoms. Get off the standard American diet (SAD) of highly processed foods. Don't cave-in to childish requests for processed cereals and breakfast foods with too much sugar and high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) in addition to the artificial dyes that create those colorful items.
Get in the habit of having real food around for you and the kids. Limit sugar. Use purified water for drinking and cooking to avoid fluoride. Encourage exercise over video games and TV. Add dietary supplements that are mentally beneficial, such as the B vitamins and magnesium citrate. See:
Pesticides tied to ADHD in children
Educational: Not everyone handles the regimentation of our public school educational system well. Not everyone is suited for sitting still for hours while being confronted with subject matter that's irrelevant or boring.
Some need more stimulation and have other interests. Perhaps a school that specializes in the creative arts may be more suitable. There are private educational systems that allow kids to learn at their own pace in their own way, leading to an individual who can think on his or her own.
Homeschooling is one of those options if one can provide it. Other systems include the Montessori and Rudolf Steiner systems. (Source)
Emotional/Spiritual: If there is little to no positive family involvement and/or role-modeling, what can be expected? Familial bonding that's real and not posed is an important aspect of avoiding what are considered social disorders and poor mental health leading to drugging the nation's children.

See:

See:

How to Avoid Hidden Added Sugar in Your Food
At GSG I try to be all about the good things you eat–and do–to fuel and strengthen your body.
I want to be all about what to say yes to. Not so much about what you gotta say no, no, never to.
But sugar? It’s everywhere, and it’s nasty stuff.
I’ve written before about how sugar can ruin your health–not only is it cancer’s favorite food, but it’s as dangerous as alcohol and cigarettes. It causes inflammation, addiction, weight gain, and diabetes.
I’ve also written about beating my own sugar addictions–and recent research is showing that “addiction” isn’t too strong a word.
Jeff O’Connell refers to sugar as “America’s deadliest habit,” and Dr. Robert Lustig famously describes how sugar and street drugs have a lot in common in the way they affect the human brain and behavior.1,2
One study has even shown sugar to be more addictive than cocaine.3
And when we give in to the cravings, sugar “rewards” us by making us feel weak, without willpower, out of control, and guilty.
But you know this. It’s likely you’ve already decided to reduce or eliminate sugar in your diet, and I’ll bet you’ve read a lot of labels, noticing added sugar in everything from bread to soup, and even ketchup.
But while you might know that manufacturers put sugar in all kinds of foods that don’t seem like they need it, did you also know that they’re also concealing it by using dozens of different names for “sugar?”
The ingredient may not say “sugar,” but it’s going to trigger the addictions, create the inflammation, and increase your risk of cancer and diabetes, just the same! The first step toward knowing how to avoid hidden added sugar in your food is learning some tricks for spotting them on food labels.
Other names for sugar on ingredient labels
The more we catch on to how deadly sugar is, the more the food industry produces alternatives with tricky or technical names. They would prefer you know less, rather than more, about what you’re eating.
But the list of sugar’s variant names is long.
Most folks are savvy to “sucrose,” “fructose,” and “high-fructose corn syrup” (HFCS) as names for added sugar. Because the -ose suffix was assigned by biochemists to indicate the presence of sugar, you can sleuth for sugars by looking for ingredients with that ending: besides sucrose and fructose, look for dextrose, mannose, maltose, saccharose, and glucose, as well.
Another tip is to watch for “syrups.” Syrups are created by boiling down and concentrating the juices from high-sugar plants like cane and corn. HFCS is the most notorious sugar syrup, of course, but any “syrup” on an ingredient label is an added sugar: malt syrup, rice syrup, refiners’ syrup, carob syrup, maple syrup, and golden syrup are a few more examples.
There are other ingredients with names that are familiar to you, and are even from whole-food sources, but are still concentrated sweeteners and can be considered “hidden sugar:” fruit juice concentrate, honey, maple syrup, molasses, and sorghum.
More ingredients that may not be immediately obvious as being added sugar include muscovado, panocha, treacle, dextrin, and barley malt.
What about the sugar “hiding” in fruit?
The anti-carb folks will hate me for this one. But here’s a fact:
Yes, there are sugars in fruit, but nobody ever got diabetes from eating fruit. In fact, nobody gets fat from eating fruit, either.
(Now, if you’re eating lots of fruit AND you’re eating lots of refined sugar, then you have a problem. But let’s just assume that all of the sugar in your diet comes from fruit.)
Some indigenous people who have no access to Western packaged foods eat lots of fruit, in season. Some cultures, in some parts of the year, it’s the majority of their diet! And they don’t have inflammation, or weight problems. Their diabetic population is approximately zero.
Ignore the diet industry, including the current “low carb” popular trend. Its survival requires you buying their line so you’ll buy their packaged foods. And the line they’re selling is to vilify whole foods with natural sugars in them, which confuses the issue, because we have a problem with refined sugar, not with whole foods that contain natural, simple sugars.
Fruit isn’t your problem. Fruit is packed with phytonutrients and antioxidants and minerals, plus loads of soluble and insoluble fiber, to clean the digestive tract and slow down impact on blood sugar.
If you’re going to worry about sugars, worry about the isolated, concentrated kind. Not the kind you pick off a tree or vine.
What is All This Hidden Added Sugar Doing to Our Bodies?
The sugar industry is trying to wrap C12H22011 (i.e. sugar) up in pretty, natural bows by giving it names like evaporated cane juice and fruit nectar. And we are taking the bait. By the end of 2015, “alternative” sweeteners reached $1.4 billion in annual sales.4
The average American consumes 152 pounds of this sugar—including “natural” and “processed”—every year. 152 pounds! That’s about 6 cups every week! And what’s all that sugar doing to our bodies? It’s making us sick in dozens of ways.
Why is sugar bad for you?
Here are just a few of the 100-plus negative effects sugar has on your body:
Fuels addiction. Sugar stimulates the same part of our brain as opioids do: the complex reward-center that leaves us constantly seeking our next “hit”.5
Damages cells and tissues. Researchers from the University of California San Francisco conducted a study that revealed cell aging and sugar consumption went hand in hand. The protective units of DNA (called telomeres) were shorter in those participants who drank the most soda. Shorter telomeres are associated with chronic diseases of aging like heart disease, diabetes, and cancer, and are found in people that smoke cigarettes.6
Steals happiness. A study conducted by Harvard School of Public Health linked foods that create inflammation, such as sugar and refined grains, with an over 40 percent greater chance of developing depression.7
Feeds Cancer. Guess what researchers feed cancer in a Petri dish in order to keep it alive while they search for a cure? Sugar.
Ever since Otto Warburg won a Nobel Prize for discovering that sugar feeds cancer, study after study has confirmed the cause and effect.8 A cancer cell has 19 insulin receptors, compared with a normal cell’s 2–which is why cancer cells mop up sugar that’s fed to them, and grow. In fact, people undergoing scans for cancer drink a concentrated glucose (sugar) solution infused with radioactive material–since cancer cells readily uptake the sugar, the scans light up the tumors feeding on the radioactive glucose.
The sugar industry has known this connection for decades–they tried to bury their own research conducted some 50 years ago, confirming the link between sugar and cancer.9
Accelerates aging. Sugar destroys the skin’s collagen and elastin—components that make our skin strong and gives it that “bounce-back” ability. Researchers in England and the Netherlands found that those people with the highest blood sugar appeared older than those with the lowest.10
Suppresses the immune system. Once your blood sugar reaches 120 mg/dl, your white blood cell’s ability to seek and destroy bacteria and viruses is reduced by 75 percent. And blood sugar isn’t even considered “high” until it reaches 130 mg/dl!11
Damages kidneys, brain and eyes. Sugar builds up in your blood vessels and becomes like sludge when it hits your tiny capillaries. Areas in the body that rely the most on these blood vessels and are susceptible to damage include the kidneys, brain, and eyes. In fact, sugar consumption has been linked to macular degeneration—Americans’ number one cause of vision loss.12
Contributes to heart disease and strokes. Sugar stimulates the liver to dump harmful fats into the bloodstream, leading to high blood pressure and hardening of the arteries.13 In the last 25 years, Americans’ consumption of table sugar has increased by 500 percent, while their intake of fats has gone down. Yet heart disease continues to rise.14
According to Dr. Mark Hyman, the glut of high fructose corn syrup on the market has led to the most common disease in America—fatty liver. This, in turn, has led to diabetes, heart attacks, strokes, cancer and dementia.15
What’s the recommended daily sugar intake?
The American Heart Association recommends no more than 6 teaspoons of added sugar per day for women.
I recommend no added sugar.
Don’t let the sugar industry fool you with their 61+ names for hidden added sugars. It’s estimated that 74 percent of the packaged foods sold in supermarkets contains sugar.16 The good news? They haven’t started injecting our beautiful, whole fruits and vegetables with the sweet stuff…yet.
In order to help you choose foods that are free of what some refer to as the “White Devil,” I’ve listed 37 of the most commonly used words for sugar on a wallet-sized card. It’s yours for free–my way of helping you live the healthiest life possible.
