A domestic horror or a gothic melodrama? Why not both! It's THE HOUSEMAID (1960, Kim), aka HANYEO, Korea's first horror movie!
Dealing with social commentary about Korea's changing class and addressing women's sexual desires, this is a one-of-a-kind movie.

The Island of Sea Women Review: Resilience, Friendship & Tradition
This book has taught me more about women hood, resilience, joy and gratitude of living, than any other I have read before. Photo by: NOLITETHOUGHTS I am so so happy that I have found an author whose work I can follow from now on. Last year there were many like the amazing Leah Angstman (Shoot the Horses First), the brilliant Pip Williams (The Dictionary of Lost Words), the magical Laura Purcell…

Xiu Zhuang's Body Lies A-Moulder In The Grave
Xiu Zhuang's body lies a-moulder in the grave, No cry is heard from noble sons with whom he thought to brave, Yet though his treason of two lands cost him his dearest life, His soul yet marches on. Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! His soul yet marches on. Xiu Zhuang was a hero of born and truest stock, And Radurjics know virtue by his manly saltwood shock, But now he lies 'neath flowers red and grass grows on his grave, His soul yet marches on. Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! His soul yet marches on. He tried to seize the Silver Throne with an army he did lead, But forgotten had he Salterri Hanyeo's final creed, That treason shall have any hung or sword to have his head, His soul yet marches on. Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! His soul yet marches on. Xiu Zhuang was a true soldier and a poet can't you see? Ascension he'd attain if he wasn't five foot three, And soon two feet he would have less but walk he can still, For his soul yet marches on. Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! His soul yet marches on. A civil war a-brewin' that the Lord from on high saw, On field of white is billowing the purple dragon's maw, And high shall be the spirit's tune as pitched bells announce, For his soul yet marches on. Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! His soul yet marches on. All brethren claim their Ordered lot of civilized fate, With sharpest edge of mind and steel strike through the ingrate, Give a blow in Xiu Zhuang's name and all the olden kings, Their souls are marching on. Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Their souls are marching on.
Salterri folk songs & poetry
I wanted to save some old folk songs and poems I had written for a worldbuilding game. I'll just put them here on Tumblr for somewhat easier finding.
The Tragedy of Captain Ia Zhoun
The thunder resounds across the horizon With waves splashing water into my face My heart thumps faster as I grip my gun And for courage I recall my lover's embrace She was a young maiden with hair white as rice Her eyes pierced the darkness with verdant green light I still hear her laughter when I close my eyes And fondly remember the midsummer night Oh how far I've travelled since the days I was young I pray to the spirits that she will be well And dream of our children to whom I have sung Many a lullaby and stories I'd tell The thunder resounds across the horizon With waves splashing water into my face My heart thumps faster as I grip my gun And for courage I recall my lover's embrace My hair has grown grayer since the first springday time But she returns my glances completely unchanged We had danced together just the day 'fore our crime Of leaving our loved ones from us all estranged But 'lo hold before us, in the Lord's dying light The isle-wooden ships of the brigands set sail Arm now yourself with faith and steel might You young virile skimmers of the Isle of the Bale She was a young maiden with hair white as rice Her eyes pierced the darkness with verdant green light I still hear her laughter when I close my eyes And fondly remember the midsummer night Remember so fondly whom remain in your homes Guarding the hearthfire for when you return The wives and the weres and the yet unborn come With warmth of their love shall no pyres burn I'll return you all from the first to the last Your loved ones await you all back at the port Let the good fight commence from the hull to the mast May all of you live while yet death's my retort Oh how far I've travelled since the days I was young I pray to the spirits that she will be well And dream of our children to whom I have sung Many a lullaby and stories I'd tell

Kim Ki-young - The Housemaid (Hanyeo) (1960) If your first contacts with Korean cinema come from Oldboy or more recently Parasite, and if you liked those films you might want to take a look at The Housemaid. This is kind of the beginning of those weird, twisty, melodramatic, class-conscious mind-fucks that Koreans do so well. Here the story involves a housemaid coming into the service of a family and insinuating herself into the lives of the family to a point where it becomes a horror story, with murder, poisoning, forced abortions, rape and all of that stuff. It's also immensely melodramatic to a level which was no longer popular in the US since the days of silent cinema. In fact it's so over the top that it might ruin some people's enjoyment of it. To me it was a plus, just making a bonkers movie all the more bonkers. No character is loveable here, you just want them all to die, and they mostly oblige. The end is particularly weird with a tacked on moral that really deflates the whole thing and leaves you with a silly look on your face. A kind of "it was all a dream" ending, which makes not sense and seems like a clearly cynical way of getting past censors, which is pretty funny, because it's fooling no-one. After all the horror the film seems to be a promotion of traditional family values, which I suppose it kind of is, but it does take a weirdly winding road to get there. Definitely a mark in the history of Korean cinema, and something you should watch if you like Korean cinema at all.
