Favorite Hannigram Fics of 2024

So! I’ve been thinking about making this list for weeks but it overwhelmed me — I started reading Hannigram fic this year and have consumed millions of words of it. I began without an ao3 account so many of the ones I started with are lost to the aether, but here are the absolute gems, the ones I can’t stop thinking about. Some are popular, others less known.

My tastes might not be yours, but I am drawn to excellent writing, slow burns, power dynamics and a healthy dose of twisted kink. So! ONWARD!

Blackbird by @emungere - “Shortly after Will kills Garret Jacob Hobbs, he and Hannibal stumble into a D/s relationship. It's a relief to have Hannibal telling him what to do, but the closer they become, the closer he gets to realizing who and what Hannibal really is.”

I love D/s Hannigram and this was exquisite. Everything by emungere is, of course, but this is my favorite.

Bram Stoker’s HANNIBAL by @dbmars - “Hannibal + Bram Stoker's Dracula + the classic novel = a new version of the seductive vampire legend.”

A love letter to both the 90s film and the original work. This is the longest fic I read this year and it consumed me for weeks. It’s gorgeous, sexy, beautifully-written and every casting choice made me kick my feet with glee.

Secretary by FragileTeacup and ThisIsMyDesignHannibal - “Will Graham needs a job. Since quitting the FBI, he’s been adrift for months, broken and lost; chasing a desire he doesn’t understand in increasingly destructive ways. What he needs is stability, direction, something to help put his life back in order and quiet the buzzing in his head.”

Secretary is one of my favorite films ever, and this take on it had me foaming at the mouth. It’s so good. SO GOOD.

Hinterland by @pastelwell - “When they crash into the water he believes it’s over. He followed his final impulse to do the right thing by his friends, his family, the world. The last flutters of morality within him had guided him, even as he looked into the eyes of a murderer who had somehow compelled his fall from grace. Here, in the frigid deep waters, their chapter is closed and their story is concluded. Except it isn’t. This is just the beginning.”

A divine post-fall fic of rehabilitation, angst, longing and some of the hottest smut imaginable. I love a post-fall fic and this is top-tier!!

With skin intact and altered souls by romanticallyinept - Will snorts his laughter, shifting to tuck his hands under his arms. “Come on,” he says, turning his head to look over at Hannibal. “The chances of two serial killers being in one car would be astronomical.”

They’re both serial killers!!! What are the odds!! This one is so fun, so fucked, so hot. Really great dialogue.

Our Shadows, That are Bold, Sing by @highermagic - “The monster under Will's bed calls himself Hannibal. He has lived there since Will was old enough to have a bed. He is very smart, and Will likes him very much. He protects Will's dreams, wakes him when he has nightmares. He embraces Will with shadows that black out the morning light when dawn comes, and sings soft songs that Will doesn't know.”

Listen, I read basically every one of HigherMagic’s fics this year. They’re all, every one of them, incredible. This one really got me, though. Monster Hannibal is my husband now.

patroclus in furs by bleakmidwinter - “Will Graham has been acting in heterosexual porn for years but is fired when his manager encourages him to take a higher-paying job for a homosexual centric porn company. There, he finds his expectations turned upside down.”

This is obviously ABSURD but oh my god, did I love it. Will Graham having a sexual identity crisis with notoriously sadistic porn god Hannibal is like candy to me. 10/10.

Cuisine Euphonique by thecountessolivia - “Nightmares brought on by a gruesome case lead Will to some unorthodox therapy in the form of a YouTube cooking channel.”

Will gets obsessed with Hannibal’s secret ASMR channel. Incredible phone sex is the natural conclusion. The descriptions of sound in this are viscerally gorgeous.

Funeral of Flowers by thecountessolivia - “Venice, 1870. The heart of winter. The once great city republic is on its knees. The banned institution of Carnevale lives on discreetly in the masked balls that light up the grand palazzi of the rich and the well-born.”

Hannigram at Carnevale. Sumptuous, longing, decadently described historical AU. Loved this to death.

Black Rock Mountain by bokunojinsei - “Will is a hitchhiker with questionable hobbies. Hannibal is a man who has questionable motives. When Hannibal drives by Will who just so happens to need a ride, things quickly take a turn from the questionable to the downright depraved.”

An even smuttier They’re Both Serial Killers fic that had me howling in the streets. You want bloody horny Hannigram? This is elite!!

To Fuel Your Radiance by GoldenUsagi - “AU where Will is the actual Devil. After Hannibal sells his soul, a fascination begins to develop between them. Will is intrigued by the unique monster Hannibal is, while Hannibal thinks Will is the most magnificent thing he's ever encountered. As their conversations continue, their involvement with each other becomes something else entirely.”

I’m not gonna lie, I think this was my favorite fic I read this year. Will as The Devil is so hot I screamed. There’s a scene at the end that is so fucked I lost my mind. Not even close to safe or sane. A masterpiece.

The Night Owl by sourweather - “Will works the graveyard shift at his University's 24 hour Library. There's another student who only comes in to study in the dead of night. Will can't explain why, but something about that boy has caught his attention.”

College AU! COLLEGE AU! Featuring some great Beverly fun.

An Ounce of Wit by winddragon - “AKA a modern magical AU where the entire point is to turn Will Graham into a catboy.”

The infamous Will is a Catboy fic that is somehow SO good. I had to be convinced to read this but I’m so glad I did. It’s an absolute delight, and the dark magic is so cool?! Goofy, yes, but delicious.

WHEW. I know there are more I could add and some I’ve lost track of or forgotten, but these fics changed me!! I obviously pored through the archives of a few authors - HigherMagic, emungere, MissDisoriental, thecountessolivia, EarthsickWithoutYou, Scifibabe, antiheroblake, bleakmidwinter and DBMars all kept me fed this year! 🖤 without all their incredible work I never would’ve started writing my own fic, so I’m deeply grateful.

HELP FOR MY MASTER’S THESIS: Hannibal fics recs?

hello everyone! :)

for my master’s degree in literature, i study artistic representation in fanfiction, especially in Hannibal (TV) fanfiction. my corpus features every fic published on AO3 that fall under the following tags: “Museum”, “Art”, “Painting”, “Religious Imagery & Symbolism”, from 2013 to june 2024. the aim is to find enough passages to build an interesting corpus of works to compare these texts. 

BUT, obviously, there are a lot of artistic depiction in fanfictions that are not tagged and thus not in my corpus yet. this is where and why i am calling for help. do you know any fic in which some artistic reference impacted you? 

i am searching in the Hannibal (TV) fandom but it may be of any rating, finished or not, etc etc. 

IF you know a piece of fic that is NOT Hannibal-related but would be very interesting to work on (a classic in the fandom? a particulary well-crafted piece? a perfect representation of what appears when you mix fanfiction and art?), i’ll take it, as it may be something worth comparing to my main corpus.

it has NOT to be in english and it can be a translation! EVERY LANGUAGE is good to go! plus encore qu’aux autres, je m’adresse à VOUS, fellow francophones :)

it may be a few lines, whole paragraphs, or an entire fic about it, as long as it references either what we consider artistic (vague remarks on painting, tableaus, sculpture… even in a non-artistic context — treating Hannibal’s tableaus as painting, or Will being described like a Antique sculpture counts — i'm taking these examples as i know it exists in the fandom) or a specific work (a painting in particular : descriptions, etc). 

i am especially curious about works featuring these passages that aren’t tagged with the previous tags; but honestly, i would gladly appreciate some recommendations tagged “Religious Imagery & Symbolism” or something i already mentionned, as it may help me to navigate the hundred of fics i currently have downloaded on my computer (lmao).

When Will Graham storms into Hannibal's house muttering about kissing Alana Bloom, the good doctor makes Will an offer: Pretend to date Hannibal in order to prove to Alana that Will is not only stable but capable of being in a relationship. When Alana is convinced Will is the man of her dreams, Hannibal will step aside and Will can get his girl. What could possibly go wrong?

Really fun and balances that fun with some excellent writing. Spot on dynamic, fantastic chemistry.

He has found the Devil and wants to live inside of him. There is no more room for God. / Chronological snapshots throughout Will Graham's life.

Arguably one of the best-written Hannibal fics (and fics in general) ever. Hard-hitting, painful throughout but like a punch that hits the knots right out of you. If that makes sense?

Five Times Hannibal Visits Will and One Time He's Already Home (or: Coffee Cake) by bones_2_be

Rating: E | Word Count: 82,385

When Will tells Hannibal to leave at the end of Digestivo, he goes. And then, a few years later, he shows back up. They have long conversations, drink a lot of wine, at the end of it all they find something that works.

Excellent progression. Love the characters in this. Again, great fucking writing. Restricted fic, so you'd have to be logged in.

The Mongoose and the Mouse by Hiding Now

Rating: E | Word Count: 109,582

With Mother's and Father's Day impending, Will has been feeling particularly irascible. He has parent issues (as do we all) so as a therapeutic exercise, Hannibal suggests something novel: a vacation together to recapture the childhood he never had. His caveats: Will must choose someplace he's never been, someplace he always wanted to go as a child. The idea is ridiculous. Will can only think of one place. But there is no way Hannibal will agree to go to a place where turkey legs are a staple, and cartoon characters offer hugs on every corner. Will calls his bluff. Hannibal calls it right back. OR ~Will and Hannibal spend a week at Walt Disney World for perfectly sound psychological reasons~

It's the disney fic! Always fun to read back.

Will does the only reasonable thing that someone fresh out of a mental hospital with no support system does - he leaves, and goes on a road trip to the Pacific Northwest.

AU of Season 2. This is my favorite Hannibal fic, and one of the best-written at that. Every paragraph is rich in flavor. I would definitely eat this. This is the fic I recommend the most often.

In its beak, a very finely embroidered cloth, and in that, the tiniest of soft fists pushing forward from a folded corner. “Don’t you dare,” Will says, crouching, hand that is not currently cradling an overly large pour of whiskey pointed at the bird to ward it off. --- After Hannibal is arrested and the trial dates are set, the stork visits Will Graham. With it, it brings a baby, a legally binding birth certificate, and a hope chest full of gifts for her. Nobody except Will thinks this is weird. (Alternatively, what if the Scarlet Letter was a dark romantic comedy?)

So good and heartfelt throughout. I wished this was canon.

Whenever I go into a new fandom, I look for pru's works first. This was no exception, and it's so fucking good. It's a genuine thriller. There's no description, and pru doesn't tag, so I will let you go in blind. An exciting read, brilliantly written both stylistically, plot-wise, and character-wise. The dynamics here are wonderful !! Hard-recommend.

How is Eri able to forgive him, to look at him like he’s a hero, when he failed her so badly for so long? If he had been stronger, faster, better with his quirk, he would have been able to get her out of their faster, save her right when she first ran into him instead of so much later. Sir Nighteye was right about him not deserving— Problem Child? comes Aizawa-sensei’s voice. He sounds tired and a bit irritated, as always, but beneath that there’s a layer of sheer incredulity. Problem Child? his voice comes again. This time Izuku finally recognizes where it’s coming from— his own head. He can feel a sharp, painful jolt of panic physically stabbing through his chest, and he can’t help but bite back an emphatic shit.

Or: While visiting Eri at the hospital following her rescue from the Shie Hassaikai, Izuku and Aizawa-sensei both run into a nurse with a telepathy based quirk, and Izuku finds himself in a telepathic bond with his teacher. This is... somewhat worrying, considering how many secrets Izuku needs to keep.

Very much agree. Hannibal is a preening show-off who needs everyone to acknowledge his superior intellect.

Will is just exhausted by the people around him and needs them all to shut the fuck up, because they cannot keep up and he does not have the patience to explain to them the things he gets implicitly.

Jack is probably medium-smart, but also a fucking idiot, because in season one, he completely buys into Hannibal’s peacock display, but treats Will as if he’s just an unusually-clever trained seal with particularly useful trick.

darling little idiot by @divinetheatre is a delightfully explicit one-shot that directly works with Will calling Hannibal out on his intellectual vanity in the most withering way possible (but also in a way that Hannibal, despite his being extremely flustered, is very, very into).

Perhaps not for everyone - mind the tags - but definitely a favourite of mine.

OKAY I am a little sick of people thinking of Will Graham as uneducated or unintelligent.

This man owned a huge amount of well-loved books, he was familiar with the works of Dante Alighieri, he outsmarted the FBI, and he could keep up intellectually with Hannibal fucking Lecter. On top of that, he manipulated Hannibal, a master manipulator, and even fooled him. He outsmarted the smartest man he knew.

As far as his education goes, Will had a degree in forensic science (a notoriously difficult field of study, at least in the U.S.) from George Washington University and was implied to have more than one, or at least multiple areas of education, due to his ACADEMICALLY PUBLISHED WORKS in entomology.

I'm not sure where this idea that Will is not as intelligent or educated as Hannibal (or other characters for that matter!) came from, but it seriously grates on my nerves. I am begging some of y'all to give him more credit. He's canonically incredibly intelligent, and that's not just from his empathy disorder.

(And before anyone comments, yeah, I know it's probably from the poor kid who grew up at the boatyards in NOLA fanon, but still.)
