🔎 The Adventure of the Detection Club
Chapter 6: By The Book
Table of Contents & Trigger Warnings
Redford opened the rather well-worn looking ledger. “This is our current list of members, as up-to-date as yesterday morning, when I updated it ahead of Dexter being officially sworn in as a member. The check means that they’ve paid their dues for the month—which Harris Thomas unfortunately didn’t for several months in a row, as such he was expelled, and Dexter Collins was due to serve as his replacement.”
“I see,” said Ryunosuke. “So why did Dexter Collins get offered membership after Harris Thomas was expelled?”
“It’s a particular rule of our organisation; fully-paid membership is capped at seven members, per club constitution. Of course, we have honorary members, but they bear the name alone. Bit like an honorary degree. Just because you’re considered an honorary doctor doesn’t necessarily mean you can walk into a hospital grab a scalpel and set to work, you know?”
Redford quickly jotted down a list of the organisation’s members, and handed it over to Ryunosuke.
“Oh thank you. Let’s see here…”
Redford Ninate – President of the Detection Club
Christina Agatha – Vice President of the Detection Club
Arthur Conan Doyle
Dexter Collins – Most recent admission
Alan Edgar Doe
Raymond Chalmers
Hannah Sophia
Harris Thomas – Expelled, but now deceased.
“‘Arthur Conan Doyle’? Why does that name sound so familiar to me…” said Susato. “Wait a minute, isn’t that Iris’s agent?”
“Oh yes, I believe he may well be. Doyle represents quite a few authors nowadays, given that he’s now officially wound up his medical practice. Bit of an odd fellow at times though, but his medical knowledge is second-to-none.
“Christina’s a pharmacology student in the university, specialising in poisons. She’s rather well-known for her work. After a nursing student read one of her novels, she was able to accurately recognise the symptoms of cyanide poisoning in a toddler, so she was considered prime candidate for the vice presidency.
“Raymond Chalmers is…well…a bit of an odd fish if you catch my meaning.”
“Odd how?”
“Well his style of writing is a little…how could I put it…grittier than most. He’s an American exchange student, as is Doe. But Doe’s work is more psychological than Chalmers’s work.”
“And what about Hannah Sophia or Dexter Collins?”
“Hannah Sophia’s written plenty of psychological thrillers herself, but she’s getting more into the old-school kind of stuff nowadays. As for Dexter, his work’s impressive, if a little droll at times for my tastes. But, he met the requirements for admission so we quite literally couldn’t say ‘No thanks’ to him.”
“I see. All good to know. Did they all get along well with Harris?”
“To my knowledge, yes. But as I mentioned earlier, we crime fiction writers always value our secrets, so they could’ve been in a darn fight club or something with the man and I could’ve never been any the wiser. It might be an idea to investigate every lead possible before you end up ruling anybody out.”
“I’ll bear that in mind,” said Ryunosuke, making a mental note. “But what, exactly, did you mean about the admission requirements?”
“You mean to become a member?”
“Er, yes please.”
“It’s a rather simple process, actually. First of all, there must be a vacancy. And a vacancy is either through a member being expelled for contravening the organisation’s constitution or bringing it into disrepute, being jailed for more than a month, failing to pay dues, or, naturally, if the member were to die.
“Second of all, you must be nominated by an already-existing Detection Club member, and submit a completed work of crime fiction to be brought forward for consideration by all other members of the club.
“Thirdly, the club members must vote for who, exactly, to admit. However, we rarely use this particular clause. All but the president of the club vote. That way we can ensure there’s always an odd number, preventing the need for any run-offs or tie-breakers.”
“I see. I should make a n—”
Redford handed a note over to the lawyer. “I’ve already made a note of that for you.”
“Er, thank you,” said Ryunosuke, putting the note into his pocket. By the time this particular investigation was finished, it was looking more and more likely than not that the court record was going to be about as thick as a crime novel itself.
“I’ve got all the contact details of club members located within this folder, and you can consider this my official permission to use all of the contact details within—as well as any resource of the Detection Club where necessary—for official use during the course of this investigation. Thankfully, club rules allow for that too.”
“These club rules all sound to be incredibly specific, Red,” said Ryunosuke.
“You wouldn’t believe how specific they are. I’m allowed to do that under Rule 1345, Section A1, Subsection B64, Paragraph 223.”
“H-How many?!”
“Rule 1345, Section A1, Subsection B64, Paragraph 223. It makes more sense than Rule 8262, Section Z26, Subsection G223/X, Paragraph 2: ‘The club’s hot cocoa supplies may only be obtained from Bradley Cocoa Inc.’—I’m more of a Neville Cocoa Co. fan myself. If you want to, some other day when I’m not under investigation for murder, I could bring you for some cocoa. My treat, of course.”
Ryunosuke’s cheeks seemed to be going redder and redder than his client’s namesake. “I—I’d like that a lot, th-thank you…” he stuttered out, before there came the noise of a typewriter clattering to the ground outside.
“G-Get off o’ me ya great bawbag!” cried a voice. “You there, Sholmes! What the hell d’ye thing ye’re doing?! Tell ‘em to lemme go!”
Ryunosuke exclaimed: “What—?!”
Redford exclaimed: “—the hell—?!”
Susato exclaimed: “—is this—?!”
They quickly stepped out from the office to find Mr. Sholmes, Athelney Jones, and several police constables wrestling a man to the ground, with Sholmes desperately trying his best to try and fit a pair of handcuffs onto him in order to try and keep him restrained.
“Get…offa…me!” cried the man, standing up like a giant that had been rudely awakened from his slumber.
The man was tall and well-built, sporting well-combed fair-brown coloured hair and a rather well-kept handlebar moustache. Compared to Redford or even to Mr. Sholmes, he looked to be a giant amongst everyone that was stood in the room that day.
But what really drew the gathered crowd’s attention was the fact that he seemed to be wearing an outfit that was much too small for him; an outfit in the form of a small silver tiara, a green sleeveless top, a pink tutu and ballet slippers, with what looked to be a pair of wings cut out from cardboard strapped to his back and a long wooden stick with a star attached to the end of it.
“Sholmes! What the hell d’ya think yer playin’ at?”
“Arthur?!” exclaimed Redford. “You know you can’t come in here right now, not whilst the police are still investigating!”
“Sorry…Did you just say Arthur?” asked Susato.
“Yes, this is Arthur Conan Doyle.”
“One of your lot then, eh?” asked Jones, folding his arms with a sneer on his face.
“Not only that, Detective Jones. But this man…” Sholmes spun into the centre of the room and pointed at Conan Doyle with a flick of his fringe. “…is the true criminal that you’ve been searching for all along!”
“It was Arthur All Along? Come off it.”
“If anything, he should be prosecuted for crimes against my eyesight,” said Ryunosuke out loud, not quite sure where to look, given that the outfit that the man was wearing was far too small for him and far too revealing for everybody else.
“I’m quite sure of it. After all, I have perfectly intact logic and reasoning that can explain all.”
“Such as?”
“Well then I’ll show you then. It’s officially time for…Herlock Sholmes’s Dance of Deduction!”
“Oh this’ll be something to look forward to!” cried Redford excitedly, taking out his notebook and already beginning to rapidly scribble notes.
“Trust me when I say it isn’t…” said Ryunosuke, slumping over and fixing the defence attorney band that had slipped slightly down his arm.

The Masterpiece that is a Woman’s Womb: A Place Inciting Awesomeness.
The zine entitled “How My Diva Cup Revolutionized My Life, a True Story” doesn’t have an author’s name on the small handmade pages chronicling a woman’s journey of buying a diva cup. Diva cups were patented in the mid-1900s and the modern design was invented in 1937 by “American actress Leona Chalmers” to place on the market. (“Short History of Menstrual Cups.” Lunette Menstrual Cup, www.lunette.com/blogs/news/short-history-of-menstral-cups.)
During the time this zine was written, feminism and movements such as riot grrrl punk movements swept America with the storm of angry women. This wasn’t the dainty social revolution of past women. These women were angry and honest and ready to take back their womanhood. This woman, who drew her own story using a period cup, was one example of a woman of the time diving into a taboo topic regarding female sexuality and publicly releasing the zine for other women to relate to. The zine pulls from personal and emotional experiences of one woman to share them with other readers.
I love how open and honest this zine is. The witty, if slightly graphic, images are to enhance the natural and honest story of periods and what a woman goes through. At this time the women in the riot grrrl movement focused on embracing their inner woman. The women championed their inner beauty and strength, rioting against the patriarchy who’d wrongfully silenced these attributes. The tone of the piece is slightly amused; the simplistic diary of the diva cup aided a reader’s view of a period as fundamental and natural. How had we looked at this fundamental piece of ourselves as wrong before reading said zine? A period is a fundamental womanly experience that should be celebrated and normalized instead of hidden away.
Why would this author feel the need to write a six-page flip book barely the size of my palm on such a base female bodily function? She is speaking to the women who, throughout history, have been voiceless, represented as weak and fragile, due to their feminine nature. An essay written by Gloria Steinem entitled “If Men Could Menstruate” published in the Ms. Magazine in 1978 (link here http://www.mylittleredbook.net/imcm_orig.pdf) depicted a world in which a man’s menstrual cycle was a celebrated event marking a man’s power and superiority over—you guessed it—women.
Steinem’s article states that if men could menstruate, “sanitary supplies would be federally funded and free” a topic the author of the zine also picks apart acknowledging the “awful”-ness of the feminine hygiene market. She alludes to the unfair universe in which women hide their monthly bleeds and are labeled as PMSing during such a time, when all should run away and avoid interaction. The label of the zine’s product is a DIVA cup for goodness sakes. This empowering masterpiece of engineering that allows women to be bold during their periods sexually and emotionally is named after a diva, a usually demeaning connotation when applied to a supposedly “hysterical” woman. The connotations such a product’s title sheds on a woman’s period is completely contrary to a woman’s real nature as the riot grrrl movement and zine creators were willing to share.
The zine author unleashes her inner anger over the topic similarly to the punk rock women of the riot grrrl movement. Women of the time took back their voices and shared truths previously uncomfortable to society. Personal statements against rape, domestic violence, beauty standards, gender roles, and more ridiculed the previously conceived notion that women are fragile and meek, unable to handle real world issues, to fend for or think for themselves.
Steinem’s article provides a crucial point that fleshes out the zine author’s line of thinking:
“Male human beings have built whole cultures around the idea that penis-envy is “natural” to women—though having such an unprotected organ might be said to make men vulnerable, and the power to give birth makes womb-envy at least as logical.”
A woman’s body is meant to be a great asset, capable of feats of strength (for example, reproduction? Um, hello?) and the zine’s author puts out to her audience this undeniable truth. This unidentified woman’s six-page zine is a shout into the male dominated void of society. Not a manufactured, censored whisper. A scream that women everywhere are strong and courageous and beautiful.
Instead of hiding out during a period eating chocolate and PMSing, the author demands that the readers go out and buy a diva cup, donuts, and the Le Tigre album (a popular riot grrrl album) to own the “diva” period. Literally.

Ruby Rose has been carving out a curious niche in the acting world for a few years now, with her role in Orange is the New Black’s third season launching her to overseas success. She will play Kate Kane in a big DC TV crossover later this year, and potentially go on to star as the Jewish lesbian crime fighter in her own Batwoman show.
Given that Ruby Rose has been steadily gaining bigger and bigger roles in blockbusters – including giant-shark film The Meg, which is just around the corner — playing Batwoman could really cement her stardom. Although if you go by The Meg’s IMDb page, she already is a star: according to IMDb’s STARMeter, Rose gets top billing over Jason Statham.
As a star, Rose is defined by a weird, inexplicable aura that permeates all her roles. She’s defined by Ruby Rose Energy.
Now, you’re probably familiar with the concept of Big Dick Energy, but you may not have heard of Ruby Rose Energy. Ruby Rose Energy is Big Dick Energy’s non-binary cousin. Ruby Rose Energy is effortlessly cool, but also quietly daggy.
It’s becoming a movie and TV star while always being slightly unable to escape your past as an MTV Australia VJ, or someone who got into a brief Twitter feud with Josh Thomas over unpaid Veuve at a Melbourne club. It’s having real life charisma disproportionate to what necessarily translates on screen — just like the good old days!
Ruby Rose Energy is being the first person to quit The 7pm Project. It’s not being recognisable to virtually anyone over 40, and dating a Veronica in the year 2018. As one commenter said on yesterday’s casting news, “she’s like, everything”.
Make no mistake – this is a loving tribute to Ruby Rose and the utterly specific, weird space she has carved out in Australian pop culture since the early 2000s. There’s a lot you can learn about Ruby Rose Energy from the names of characters she plays, so here’s a ranking of all the character names she is credited with playing on IMDb – ranked by least-to-most Ruby Rose Energy.

Presumably as a result of some mix-up on the first day on set that no one was brave enough to correct, the name of Ruby Rose’s character in this cliché-ridden Australian spin on Dangerous Minds is Hannah, while Christina Ricci’s is, no joke, Dino Chalmers.
It is with great regret that I must place Hannah at the bottom of this list, and that I cannot officially say that Dino motherfuckin’ Chalmers is a perfect exemplar of Ruby Rose Energy.
Though her performance was terrific as a woman who more or less does nothing until she gets hilariously sucked into a giant fan, the character’s name — Abigail — has very low Ruby Rose Energy and, as such, sits near the bottom of the list.
Abigail is the name of a pretty girl you pretend to like in primary school so people don’t think you’re gay, not the name of a character played by devastatingly handsome genderfluid star Ruby Rose.
Though I will never watch this weird Crocodile Dundee tourism ad, I do appreciate the rich complexity of giving a Ruby Rose character a title and a position of authority. That said, in its most Ruby Rose form, ‘Chief’ would be the character’s given name, and as such it falls on the lower end of the scale.
Ruby Rose plays a mute assassin in the John Wick franchise, and her character is named for the Greek god of war – which means we’re getting to the good shit.
But beyond the strong concept, it feels a bit pianissimo in execution; may I suggest it lengthens in John Wick: Chapter 3 to ‘Ares McIliad’ or perhaps ‘Ares Bazooka’?
Ruby Rose Energy is about throwing subtlety to the wind.
I know what you’re thinking: what name could possibly be more Ruby Rose than ‘Ruby Rose’?
Well, since her full birth name is Ruby Rose Langenheim, ‘Ruby Rose’ is technically only 44% of that, meaning it’s slightly below average Ruby Rose Energy.
My interest in Pitch Perfect 3: Aca-merican Imperialism is precisely zero, but Calamity is exactly the kind of Ruby Rose character name I come to IMDb to see.
Less impressive is the movie thinking that Ruby Rose-as-Calamity would be the front-woman of a generic guitar band called Evermoist instead of the lead singer of a desperately edgy Christian lady-rock group called SHEviticus, or GALatians, or The GeneSisters, and so on.
Calamity has the toughness of Ruby Rose Energy, but lacks that certain je ne sais quoi.
Where were you when all of America discovered Stella Carlin, and thus Ruby Rose, at once?
Was it the same place you were when Ruby tweeted about Katy Perry’s Witness, calling it “purposeful poop” and “bomb a petit”? Or when she threw a “singular fry” at a restaurant owner?
No name on this list better exemplifies the Ruby Rose Energy tendency to get into beefs with low-grade celebs that no one but tabloids would ever care about. Stella Carlin is what happens when Ruby Rose Energy gets captured in essence but lost in translation.
It’s trying just a little bit too hard.
The beauty of the current Golden Age of Ruby Rose Character Names is how often the names just sound like full sentences in and of themselves.
Adele Wolff.
I already feel like I’ve known this character my whole life. Like I’ve already followed her journey from digital marketing graduate to Instafamous, gluten intolerant Byron Bay-based wellness blogger, which I am convinced is where Ruby Rose would be at without her tattoos.
Jaxx Herd is, frankly, incredible.

— Ruby Rose (@RubyRose) July 31, 2018
What’s even more incredible is that this Ruby Rose character looks more like the human reboot of Charlize Theron’s haircut in Aeon Flux than any of the others (and they all do, a little) and honestly, I’m here for it.
Wikipedia says Bianca, but IMDb says Byanka, which is so Ruby Rose I can’t stand it.
And truly, is the root of the human condition not the internal war we wage over whether we are a Bianca or a Byanka?
Anyway, this movie looks bananas, Ruby Rose’s character is an overly sexualised she-wolf, and the script was co-written by someone who goes by the name ‘1kg Sugar’.
If the idea of Ruby Rose playing a character named Wendy the Android (lol) on a Canadian sci-fi show makes you think, “Huh, I wonder if they made her a horny killer fuckbot?”
The answer, unequivocally, is yes.
That they named her Wendy like she’s one of the nice mums working at a primary school tuckshop is just *Italian chef kiss* molto bene. It’s the perfect combination of ‘maybe this is the next step in human evolution’ and ‘Lorna Jane loyalty card owner’.
TheDailyMail.com Seriously Popular™ People’s Choice Award-loser Ruby Rose as… Woman.
That’s it, kids.
That’s Ruby Rose Energy.
