i just finished hani and ishu’s guide to fake dating, and i cannot tell you how fucking REFRESHING it is not to have the muslim parents in this book be egregiously homophobic. to have them to so over the top close minded (which can be true don’t get me wrong) but is the forefront of muslim representation.
to have them be vehemently homophobic, backwards and not be empathetic to their children and push religion down on them.
but hani’s mom is so understanding to her daughter who’s bisexual and muslim, who yes struggled to get it at first, but she doesn’t say she can’t. she accepts her identity AND her girlfriend.
and ishu doesn’t HAVE TO come out to her parents (who wouldn’t be very accepting probably). the story of a queer person doesn’t have to include some big coming out scene and we need MORE of this.
hani and ishu are together while still figuring themselves out because they’re teens. they’re gay and in love and they don’t need to both be out and have everyone know.

Everyone likes Humaira “Hani” Khan—she’s easy going and one of the most popular girls at school. But when she comes out to her friends as bisexual, they invalidate her identity, saying she can’t be bi if she’s only dated guys. Panicked, Hani blurts out that she’s in a relationship…with a girl her friends absolutely hate—Ishita “Ishu” Dey. Ishu is the complete opposite of Hani. She’s an academic overachiever who hopes that becoming head girl will set her on the right track for college. But Ishita agrees to help Hani, if Hani will help her become more popular so that she stands a chance of being elected head girl.
Despite their mutually beneficial pact, they start developing real feelings for each other. But relationships are complicated, and some people will do anything to stop two Bengali girls from achieving happily ever after.

Edit: thank you @linkedsoul for letting me know that I misused the term AAPI in the original post. I’m very sorry about that, and have changed the title to accurately reflect what this list is.

shoutout to parent-ified eldest kids who never ever ever no matter what take out their pain or trauma or bitterness on their younger siblings (or alternatively actively teach themselves not to even if their relationship with their parents is absolutely broken and it hurts like hell to try because their sibling's isn't) and instead do everything to make sure they never have to go through the same thing or repress their feelings and always have a built-in best friend. and maybe develop a little bit of a mom complex along the way all while doing everything in their power not to become their parents. gotta be one of my favourite genders

she smiles so rarely that each one–the genuine ones that light up her entire being–feels like a gift. like something private she has only reserved for me.

if you read adult lit I need to recommend N.K. Jemisin's absolutely brilliant The Broken Earth trilogy. It is fantasy/sci fi and is about a futuristic earth which is battered by storms due to some celestial goings-on. The characters are amazing and the worldbuilding just as much.
Hi anon! Missed your asks :D
I don't typically read adult lit (again, a middle-grade fan) but I'll definately check this out! Finally, a book rec I haven't seen on Booktok. All my friends either don't read or read Booktok stuff. The premise is seriously cool, and I love me some fantasy/sci fi.
I wish I had adult lit recs, but unfortunately I don't. However, if you're into middle grade, Momo Arashima is a seriously underrated series that just hits the spot. I don't love YA at all (seriously. Such a YA hater) but Hani and Ishu's Guide to Fake Dating is truly a masterpiece and deserves all the love and more. It's about two desi girls who fake date for different reasons: Hani, to prove to her friends that she's bisexual (her friends are assholes who don't believe her). And Ishu to become more popular to be voted headgirl (to please her parents). It deals with themes of racism and parental abandonment and queerphobia in such a nuanced, refreshing light. I know that YA can be so bad sometimes, but this book (and another other by Adiba Jaigirdar) is seriously nuanced, well paced and heartfelt.

Happy bi week to those who celebrate! These are some books which contain bi main characters (including some bi aros / bi aces) that I’ve read and enjoyed. Every book on this list is one I would recommend to someone (depending on the person).
(My apologies if some of them contain pan main characters instead, it’s been a while since I’ve read a lot of them and I don’t completely remember. I tried to check but I can’t be 100% sure)
Also, bonus: An Arcane Inheritance by Kamilah Cole is a bi4bi dark academia thriller coming out in 2025!
