Australia's Slim Dusty (1927-2003) had a career that lasted half a century. He was well-known in the 1950s for his hit song "The pub with no beer". In 2000, he released his hundredth album, and in that year sang "Waltzing Matilda" in the closing ceremony of the 2000 Summer Olympics. New Zealand's impressively virtuosic Hamilton County Bluegrass Band sprang to fame in the 1960s. They toured for two years with Slim Dusty at the end of that decade.
Kerridge Odeon Corporation Ltd: Kerridge Odeon presents Australia's king of country and western, Slim Dusty. The Slim Dusty Show, with New Zealand's own No. 1 attraction, the Hamilton County Bluegrass Band. 1 might only. Wellington St James Theatre, Wednesday 7th May at 8 pm [1969]

2017 Playlist
I know it’s the middle of April and that’s a silly time to be posting a retrospective of last year. I just realized I’d forgotten to post this back in January!
Anyway...
At the beginning of each year since 2010, I’ve put together a playlist of songs that remind me a lot of the year that just ended. They’re not necessarily songs from that year, just ones that I listened to regularly (or favorites/standouts from entire albums that I listened to a lot), or ones that I associate with particular events from that year. My previous rule for myself was to not repeat artists and to fit it all on one 80-minute CD. However, this is, you know, a retrospective of 2017, a year in which a CD is an old format. The only thing I own that still plays CDs is my car, so I figured it might be time for a new rule, especially since I’ve been consuming more and more new music lately. So, my rule from here on out is: year-in-review playlists end at either 90 minutes or 25 songs, whichever comes first.
Even with the new rule, 2017 is as eclectic as always - though there’s definitely a theme of songs about driving. I guess that’s a side effect of living in Los Angeles?
An asterisk * indicates a band (or show) that I saw live in 2017. Other symbols indicate footnotes.
The Road’s Salvation - The Lonely Heartstring Band *
The Devil’s Paintbrush Road - The Wailin’ Jennys
Love Live On - Blitzen Trapper *
Bang Bang - K’naan
The Room Where It Happens - Hamilton cast *
You’re Tearing Me Apart - The Gregory Brothers #
Sandy Boys - Crooked Jades *&
Angeline the Barista - Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers
Peace Sign - Kenshi Yonezu
Ready to Go - Republica
Even Flow - Pearl Jam
Mearcstapa - Fleet Foxes
Broken Arm - Winterpills
Phantom Limb - The Shins
Monster - Imagine Dragons
GUESS • MONSTER - Haikyuu season 3 OST
Dust Bowl Children - Alison Krauss and Union Station
San Joaquin - Amber Cross *^
Monterey County - Mipso *
Between the Wars - Molsky’s Mountain Drifters *
Goodnight Girl - Sawmill Road *%
A Phantasmic Parade - Epica *
Steal My Sunshine - LEN $
Datte Atashino Hero - LiSA
# - This is entirely @lancelotmylove‘s fault. & - I heard them play this live on the Sunday morning of a bluegrass festival. It had been over 100 all weekend, and I’d not slept much because I’d been up late playing music, so I was tired and punchy. When the double jaw harps started on this, it honestly felt like some sort of weird alternate dimension. There is something eldritch about this song. I love it. ^ - I can only find a live version of this online, not the album version. % - For the first time in my Year In Review Playlist history, I can’t find one of the songs online anywhere. Proof that CD is not 100% obsolete! The whole album this is from is great, and it’s a shame that it’s not more available. In a nutshell, this is a bluegrass song about driving for miles and miles at night, thinking about the one that you love. $ - This is entirely because of this video. I will never not associate this song with fire season now...
2016 | 2015 | 2014 | 2013 | I still haven’t posted the older ones...

Tyler Childers Extends Fall Headline Tour; Returning to Dallas on December 16th with a Gig at The Rustic
youtube
Acclaimed singer, songwriter and performer Tyler Childers will extend his nationwide, headline tour this fall with several newly confirmed shows including Nashville’s Exit/In (two nights), Atlanta’s Variety Playhouse, Oklahoma City’s Tower Theater and Dallas’ The Rustic among others. Tickets are on-sale now. These performances celebrate a breakthrough year for Childers, which saw the release of his critically acclaimed debut album, Purgatory. The record—produced by Sturgill Simpson and David Ferguson—landed on multiple “Best of 2017” lists including Rolling Stone, Vice’s Noisey, Wide Open Country and NPR Music, who praised, “The intimacy he conjures is his gift, in this private moment made universal, and throughout his remarkable official debut.” Additionally, Childers is nominated for “Emerging Artist of the Year” at the 2018 Americana Music Association Honors & Awards and also made his Grand Ole Opry debut earlier this spring.
Of the album, the Lawrence Country, KY native comments, “I am extremely grateful for Miles Miller introducing me to Sturgill Simpson, and also for Sturgill and David Ferguson taking the time to work with me. I think we both wanted to make an album for east KY, and I reckon that’s what we did. It’s not about rock, or grass, or country…it’s just hollerin’ in the mountains and stirring shit up! The band Sturgill and David put together was an all-star cast, and an honor to work with and learn from. I hope to do it again, but once is more than most are blessed with. For that I am thankful.” Current Tour Dates: 2018 June 22—Hamilton, OH—Whimmydiddle Country Music Festival 23—Ashland, KY—Paramount Arts Center (SOLD-OUT) 28—Louisville, KY—A Grassroots Fundraiser for Johnny Boone (SOLD-OUT) 29—Lexington, KY—Manchester Music Hall (SOLD-OUT) 30—Lexington, KY—Manchester Music Hall (SOLD-OUT) July 11—Vail, CO—Vail Summer Bluegrass Series 14—Telluride, CO—The Ride Festival 18—Dallas, TX—Canton Hall (SOLD-OUT) 19—Austin, TX—Historic Scoot Inn (SOLD-OUT) 20—Houston, TX—White Oak Music Hall 21—Helotes, TX—John T.
