Flash Fic: The Gardens of Hades

The gardens of Hades are barren when I come.

He snatches me from the sunlit lands and carries me to the underworld, a dark chasm lit only by the distant flames of Tartarus. His house is of black marble, and as he drags me through the shadowed halls, I try to empty my mind of everything but this moment.

I know the stories. I know that the gods have cruel desires.

Instead, he opens the door to a walled garden. A black pool glitters at the centre. Naked sticks rattle in the earth, but nothing lives here.

“This is yours, Lady Persephone,” he says.

Then he leaves.

I’m just glad Hades leaves me alone, so I don’t ask questions. I infuse the pool with light and call grass and asphodel from the dead soil.

When he visits again, he comes with a gift.

“I have brought you a servant.” A veiled shade follows him into the garden.

I wonder if he wants me to thank him for giving me a slave when I once had friends, a desert when I once had flowers.

I wonder why he took me.

Hades inspects a young shrub. “What’s this?”

“A pomegranate,” I say.

For a moment, I think he’s going to speak. Then he swallows the impulse and leaves.

On the day my pomegranate tree blooms, I find the shade sitting beneath the tree wiping her eyes with her veil. She says her first word: Springtime.

Little by little, she remembers how to speak. She talks about finishing this garden and moving on, the underworld blooming under my touch.

She doesn’t remember her name, so I call her Lethe.

My pomegranate tree bears fruit, but as I peel it open Lethe grabs my wrist. “If you eat, you will become a creature of his realm.”

I hurl the fruit at the wall.

It’s only a matter of time till my mother finds me.

Hades keeps sending gifts: servants, seeds, pruning-hooks and shovels. As the garden fills with life, so do the shades. The third time he visits, he dismisses the servants and looks at me with tired eyes. I wonder if he is always this sad.

“Your mother grieves without hope. Crops and men die, and no one sacrifices to the gods.” He sighs. “I am to send you back.”

Back to the home he took from me. Back to mother and wind and sunlight, but first I have one question.

“Why did you take me?” I spit.

He is the lord of the dead. He cannot sugar his words, as other gods might. “I need you,” he admits.

I think of Lethe, and to my surprise, I understand. I am springtime, but he is pain. No wonder the dead suffer, if that is all he can give them.

Before he can stop me, I rip open a pomegranate, and the juice is sour on my tongue.

But where I tread, they bloom. ---- I wrote this flash fic for the Pilgrim Artists' Festival, a small Christian festival of art, music, and words which runs every year in Tasmania's Huon Valley. The theme for the 2019 festival was "Grief and Hope", and I at once thought of Dorothy Sayers' poem, Rex Doloris, which imagines Hades as the King of Grief. This is the 500-word short story that resulted. I'd been looking for a way of retelling the story for nearly as long as I can remember, and this ficlet is the first step in that process. I can promise you that it won't be the last.

The 2023 Pilgrim Artists' Festival is now open for submissions of fiction, non-fiction, poetry, art, and music from Christian, Nicene-Creed-affirming artists, including children and adults, anywhere in the world. This year's prompt is "Beauty in the Everyday" and there is a 500 word limit on literary entries. There are also dozens of prizes available - check them out and submit here.

Although Thanathos your dad was a bit different but you haven't dared ask how exactly grandma Nyx made him without a father. Getting the normal birds and the bees talk was more than enough.

author’s note sorry for the radio silence. i’ve been suffering from writer’s block. working retail during the holidays will do that to you. anyway, enjoy this ficlet.

You were starting to wake. Through your eyelids, you noticed how the room around you began to brighten up. You let out a groan and turn onto your side before proceeding to tap your hand on the side where Curly normally slept…and yet you felt nothing there. Your eyelids flick open in horror.

Curly's side of the bed was empty. You sit up, frantic. Where was he? You look at his dresser, then yours - no note. You scan the room and there isn't any sign that he's gone.

You scoot off the bed and go downstairs. As you descend, you can hear his voice. You follow it into the kitchen where you finally see him standing there, still in his boxers, one hand on his hip, and the other holding his phone against his ear. He looks frustrated, must be that pony job he always complains about.

Curly acknowledges you with a smile before focusing once again on his conversation. "No, that makes no sense! I already told you I was coming here!"

You walk up behind Curly and lean against his back. Your hands run up his torso, feeling up his pectorals and his abs.

“Alright, Jimmy,” he says.

Of course.

You pull away at the sound of that name. You didn't really like how Jimmy presented himself; there was a strange amount of jealousy from his end and he could just never be happy for others. There was already a mutual dislike for each other but your boyfriend, Curly being Curly, takes his job too seriously and lets it spill into his personal life. He thinks he can H.R. his way into making you and Jimmy friends or, at least, respect each other.

Curly hangs up and turns around to greet you. "Good morning, sweetheart." He lights up with these words, no sign of being bothered by his conversation. You decide not to say anything at first. If anything, you were a little annoyed - if he was going to wake up before you, you'd at least hope he'd go out on a run or maybe surprise you with a sweet treat or flowers. You open the fridge in search of something to eat. Milk, eggs, leftover pomegranate.

"Babe?" Curly's head pokes over the fridge. "I said good morning."

You decide to eat the pomegranate for breakfast. Wouldn't want it to go bad.

"I bet it is. How's your boyfriend?" you ask. Curly's face drops. You close the fridge and take a seat by the island counter.

"Hey, don't walk away from me. What's up with you?" he asks. You shoot him a look, then your eyes move to his phone. Curly eyes follow yours and it hits him once his eyes settle on his phone.

"Please don't start. Not this morning."

"Oh, so you're aware. Perfect!" You place your cut pomegranate back in the bowl. "My question is just why? Why do you give him so much...control?"

"Control? I am my own man, you know. Captain of my own ship." You must have hit a nerve because Curly normally doesn't get defensive like this. Using his title to make him seem better? Not a usual practice of his.

"You deliver shit! People at NASA get to brag about going to space to explore! You don't. So don't let your ego get in the way of me questioning your relationship with your idiot friend."

He was Persephone, Jimmy was Hades, and like Demeter, you only had Curly for the spring and summer.

You both stare intensely at each other for a moment and it was the 'let's just hop in the sheets and fuck it out' intensity. You both were genuinely pissed at each other. 

"I'm going to step out," Curly says breaking the silence. He starts to make his way up the stairs. "Yeah, avoid the question of Jimmy, like you always do!" you yell at him.

"Shut up!" He's halfway up the stairs. Your head cocks back. "Did you tell me to shut up?" He's never spoken to you like that - you're not even sure he's spoken to anyone like that.

Curly realizes what he's just said and is equally as shocked by his own mouth. He rushes down the stairs and reaches out to you. When he's close, you turn your body away. "Hey..." he pleads.

"Curly...please go. Go anywhere. I don't know. Go call Jimmy or something. Just get out of my sight." You push your bowl of fruit away from you. Still refusing to face him, you continue, "I will not allow you to talk to me like that. Especially, especially, if we're talking about Jimmy. You must be out of your fucking mind."

He lingers before finally giving in. "Ok...I'll step out for a bit." Curly hesitantly places a hand on your back. You don’t tell him off or recoil. “I’m sorry and…and I shouldn’t have said that to you.”

Of course, he wasn’t going to acknowledge the actual problem - Jimmy. So you choose to let it go because it’s all you can do. Curly gives you the day to yourself before coming home for dinner. A bouquet of your flowers and tons of kisses make up for the quarrel for now.

Ok, with the "Hades" game finally getting a sequel and the "Hades and Persephone Ficlets" Webtoon going over the story, I present the following idea for Rick Riordan should he see it:

Nico: And I place down Hades. And with the Persephone card next to it, they both now deal double damage.

Mr. D: Not a bad move, kid. You even changed your Demeter card from a Grass variant to an Ice variant.

Nico: I gotta say, this is nice. As much as I like hanging out with Will, it's nice to just spend a little quiet time with a fellow introvert.

Mr. D: Kid, if you've seen some of my parties, you would NOT be calling me an introvert. But yeah, you are one of the more tolerable campers.

Nico: Thanks, I guess?

Mr. D: You know, you actually remind me of myself when I was your age.

Nico: Isn't that just something old people say to feel young again?

Mr. D: I'm trying to compliment you, don't blow it. Anyways, we really have more in common than you think.

Nico: What, you like Happy Meals too?

I heard you saw that cringe Hades and Persephone Ficlets webtoon and I'm here to ruin your day by telling you the author made a sequel to it called "Journey of Dionysus" and it's exactly what the title says. It supposedly follows the story of Dionysus, formerly known as Zagreus, who is the eldest son of Hades and Persephone but had to be reborn as Dionysus or something. I had high hopes for this one cause we rarely see an actual depiction of Dionysus's story, but nah, it's BORING.

His "madness" is only a thing because he went on a rampage after Ariadne "died" (killed by a random soldier who worships Apollo) but his "madness" is suddenly healed after mama Persephone went down to pull out the "This isn't you" card and had Hecate show up with Ariadne's soul to comfort him. Don't get me started on how boring Ariadne's characterization was. I can't even find myself shipping them because their relationship had about as much flavor as water with their only saving grace being the cute art style. Oh, and Apollo's like the big bad here. Why? Oh, he's just jealous because Dionysus made a name for himself as the god of theatre and Apollo doesn't want anyone being recognized as a god of art instead of him as if Athena and Hephaestus aren't deities related to art but ok. Apollo and Dionysus have this like anime battle where Apollo goes on full Super Saiyan mode while the Olympians (except Demeter because she's absent there for some reason) panic.

I don't think this one is as atrocious as the ficlets one but god, this didn't do Dionysus (and Ariadne) as much justice as the author promised." Not to mention, the author doubles down on her cringe by liking instagram comments that openly slander Demeter and Apollo as they praise Hades/Persephone and Dionysus/Ariadne for being (boring) power couples or whatever.

This comic has the exact same scenarios regurgitated and used in order to create something unique.

Is Zagreus the son of Hades and Persephone despite the fact that this erases the logic, reasons and motives from the original myth? ✅

Is Dionysus portrayed as nicer and less mischevous compared to the original myths in order depict him just as a misunderstood bad boy? ✅

Is Ariadne oblivious and naïve about lots of things and doesn't match her man's freak? ✅

Is Apollo demonized for no reason? ✅

Are Hades and Persephone obligatory included as the bestest, perfectest, more superior couple and the Underworld deities are presented as well-intentioned and misunderstood compared to the cruel Olympians? ✅

Demeter Slander? ✅

Honestly I won't be surprised if the creator read Lore Olympus.

this is a ficlet where anakin is ganymede and obi-wan is zeus

and then this is the au tag for the sith marriage au, which is basically just cupid&eros but in the gffa and one of them is evil lol

i'm always down to hear which greek myths people like for obikin or how people like to match up the ship to the myth

(i'm a bit of a whore when it comes to making aus work in that i actually don't like a one-for-one au trade where character a is just subbed in for au character a & character b is subbed in for au character b - i like when the dynamics are altered by putting obikin in place of the people or like when the vibes are the same or the premise is the same but obikin aren't tied to what the au's source material's characters did or said)

I wanted to ask about Aphrodite and Persephone relationship in Eros and Psyche myth. I know it's probably not so supposed to be but I find it funny that Aphrodite sent Psyche to retrieve Persephone's make up box(?) but it's filled with darkness(poison?) that could put Psyche to sleep.

Cuz in context Psyche told Persephone that Aphrodite would like to borrow some of her beauty kit. So I've wondered if Persephone knew of Aphrodite's intention on harming the girl? Or did she expect for Aphrodite to be the one to open the box? Did Aphrodite request for a beauty box knowing Persephone would put something else in it?

Is there any explanation why Persephone gave that or is it just how her "beauty" is?

It just seems like Persephone tried to pull a prank on Aphrodite😆

I have to say that I've never really studied this story, since (unpopular opinion) I think that Eros and Psyche are a bit boring. From what I know, the only account of this story comes from Metamorphoses (also called The Golden Ass) by Apuleius. The text itself doesn't explain Proserpina's motive.

In the underworld Psyche repeats what Venus has told her. "The box was at once filled and closed out of her sight, and Psyche took it." Before she entered the underworld she had been warned about opening the box or trying to find out what was inside. When she did so anyway it says: "But inside there was no beauty-lotion or anything other than the sleep of Hades, a truly Stygian sleep." Is this what happens if the wrong person opens the box? Is the beauty-lotion of gods harmful to mortals? Or was the Stygian sleep in fact intended for Venus? After Cupid releases Psyche from the sleep he tells her to "hurry to complete the task imposed on you by my mother's command". He sees no problem with Venus receiving what is in the box, so it is probably not harmful to her.

But it is tempting to see this as Proserpina trying to pull a prank on Venus (the webcomic Hades and Persephone and other gods ficlets by Gau meo used that interpretation in their take on the story). Psyche was also told to decline the soft cushion and rich food that Proserpina would offer her. Does that mean that those are traps and that the queen of the underworld is a deceitful character?

But I also really like the interpretation that Persephone's beauty is poison to others. ^^

Genuinely curious as to if you asked permission to use Rachel’s characters and she said yes or if you just decided Lore Olympus is popular enough to make a fan comic of and are hoping you don’t receive a cease and desist? Can anyone create a remake comic of original content and just change what you don’t like about it and it’s considered legal if you say the characters belong to the original creator? There is plenty of disappointing media out there that could be remade. I understand you cannot use their characters for profit so is just posting it ok?

Yes, anyone can, because it's called fanfiction lmao Obviously in my case the term "fan" is being used loosely here as at this point it's more like "foe"fiction LMAO but the same principles apply. Unless I try to claim LO is my own creation or make a profit off Rekindled, I should be in the clear. If legal action was taken against me then it would set a precedent against all forms of fanfiction, rewrite, redraw, etc. content around LO which are all essentially doing the same thing Rekindled is doing. I think people tend to view Rekindled as somewhat of an "exception" that's vulnerable to legal action because it's an actual weekly comic put into practice in the same playing field as LO (though they're on massively different bases obviously LOL), but there's not much more separating it from the LO redraw accounts or even the genuine fan accounts that have learned how to draw in Rachel's style (and use it to make their own LO self-inserts and whatnot). I had the time and resources and experience to do what I do through Rekindled, but every redraw, rewrite, fanfiction, etc. account are making the exact same statement I am, whether intentionally or not - "I do/don't like the canon, but/so here's what I think it would be like if it went like this".

There is definitely plenty of media out there that could be remade, and a lot of them are by the fanfiction writers out there who are filling that niche within their respective fandoms. LO is the one I want to do because it's the one that interests me and compels me the most to rewrite.

Not to mention, it's already a bold statement in and of itself to say that I'm "using Rachel's characters", a statement that likely wouldn't hold up in court LMAO Her "characters" are literally just stylized self-insert versions of public domain figures. She did not write The Hymn to Demeter. She did not create Hades, or Persephone, or Hecate, or any of the other characters she writes about. She does not own an entire religion or its deities. The only thing that she really "owns" is the licensing rights to the name "Lore Olympus", and while the style of LO is very unique and identifiable, you can't trademark/copyright a style because that uproots the entire foundation of what art is (ironically no one has had an original idea SINCE the Greeks, we all just learn and adapt our styles based on other artists that we get inspired by and learn from).

Shit, there are series completely unrelated to LO that get harassed or otherwise warned that they could cross into "legal territory" with LO just because they're Greek myth comics. Punderworld, Theia Mania, H x P Ficlets, all of these are comics that also tackle the H x P myth, and while they aren't attempting to do the same thing as Rekindled (as they exist on their own terms) it's really disappointing when I see people talk about these comics purely through the scope of Lore Olympus as if LO invented Greek myth. If WT/Rachel tried to pull rank over the story's "characters", they'd be picking a fight with every other Greek myth comic, book, movie, etc. and they oughta know that's not a fight they're gonna win lol

So everything beyond LO's branding is, in and of itself, fanfiction. Rekindled is just another level deeper by being fanfiction of a fanfiction. As long as I'm not profiting off Lore Olympus' namesake or distributing my work with the misconception that I created LO, it's legally fine. Morally, I'm sure it doesn't exactly make me a saint to do it, it definitely took a lot of hubris for me to say "yeah I don't like how you wrote your story enough that I felt the need to rewrite it completely" and I wouldn't blame anyone for thinking doing so is icky. There are certain lines I won't cross - I don't use the general LO hashtags because my content is very critical and my work isn't really for the fans, I don't encourage anyone to "show Rachel" what I do here because none of what I do here is obligated to be seen by her (and I know it wouldn't be in her best interest to see it anyways, she's literally said that she doesn't like criticism so why tf would I wanna show her a comic that exists to criticize her work lol), and I'm not planning on posting it to Webtoons because that's Rachel's territory. I don't want to overstep both in the legal sense and in the moral one. I think it's more than enough for me to just post my stuff here for the people who are seeking it, and not profit off it or directly affiliate it with LO/Rachel beyond crediting.

All that said, in a moral and legal sense, what I'm doing is literally the basis of fanfiction, and I wouldn't be going to such lengths and spending this much time every week putting out episodes every week if I never cared about LO and how it made us all feel, even if some of us don't love it as much as we used to.

WinterIron Bookmark Bingo - November Engagement

It's the third of four months we originally planned to trial this event in, I can't believe how far we've come! I've loved seeing everyone's great recommendations, drables, and ficlets, but enough mushy stuff, let's get into it.

Firstly, this month the recommendation minimums are 3 of either art OR fanfiction, I wanted to make sure I included both, so I have 2 art recommendations and a fanfiction recommendation.

Everything about this piece of art, from the poses chosen to the lighting to the colour palette is so COZY. I think it fits this month's theme perfectly.

Again, the colours are *chefs kiss*. I feel like he definitely took the mask off to look at Bucky, who's just made a dramatic appearance of some sort, and once Bucky see's Tony with the mask off he just kind of freezes. They're both just frozen, thoughts circling like a broken record, "he'sprettyhe'sprettyhe'spretty". My last November rec is The Guiding of Death, by, YOU GUESSED IT, @rayshippouuchiha. It's a twist on Hades and Persephone, with Steve in the role of Hades and Tony in the role of Persephone but it's actually WinterIron. In addition to being very good (if I do say so myself), it felt like a good fit for this month; the Persephone myth tells the story of her mandated 6-month stay in the underworld, how her trip there causes things in nature to die and gives us fall, and how her return trip brings life and gives us spring. The myth itself isn't discussed in depth in ray's story, but I think it's both very cozy and lines up well with this month being about autumn comfort.

As always, I'll end with my prompt:

Bucky is absolutely an excellent ice skater, he's lithe and graceful and, let's be honest, so housecat-coded. Tony, as graceful as he may be in the air, learns on a cute couple's date that ice skating is not a strength of his. After a few hours spent trying to get the hang of it, they're both wet and cold (Tony from falling, and Bucky from Tony trying to grab onto Bucky for balance and dragging Bucky down alongside him) so they go back to the tower to get warm. Of course, the best way to do that is hot chocolate and a movie. Bucky lets Tony pick since the ice skating was Bucky's idea and-absolutely humiliating James, it'll be all over the gossip rags tomorrow!
