By • Olalekan Fagbade Ordering Contractors to site without paying them is wrong - Group tells Fed Govt he Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) Sunday advised the federal government to dialogue with contractors handling various projects across the country. Reacting to the recent directive by the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, for contractors to return to sites, it said ordering them to return to sites without paying them is not good. The group, in a statement Sunday, also lauded the House of Representatives for suspending moves by the minister to adopt concrete for road construction, describing concrete roads as “not feasible in the light of Nigeria’s economic realities” It would be recalled that the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, had also recently told contractors handling the rehabilitation of roads in Abuja and other civil engineering services that he would not condone variations to their contract sums. But HURIWA said it was morally and legally wrong for the government to owe roads contractors for several years, and then turn around to accuse them of economic sabotage. It urged Umahi and Wike to dialogue with the contractors so that disagreements would not sabotage President Bola Tinubu’s promise to deliver good roads It said, “Ministers Nyesom Wike and Dave Umahi were governors of Rivers and Ebonyi States respectively from 2007-2023. They both know the prices of goods and services in 2015 and what they are now. They know how much they bought their official SUVs then and their current prices. “Both men know how much diesel and petrol was sold for in 2015, and the current prices. They know how much sand, chippings, asphalt, and even the cost of moving goods in 2015 vis-a-vis now. Telling a man who secured a contract in 2015 that he must return to site and complete the job at 2015 price is not only unreasonable, but wicked.” #OrderingContractorstogobacktositewithoutpayingthemiswrongGrouptellsfedGovt

HURIWA tasks INEC on Bayelsa, Kogi, Imo polls
Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has advised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) against posting alleged corrupt officials to conduct Bayelsa, Kogi, Imo states governorship poll. HURIWA’s National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, claimed that there have been plots by some officials of Imo State government to draft alleged corrupt Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) to monitor the November 11. Onwubiko also claimed that a senior police officer, Mohammed Barde who served as Commissioner of Police, in Adamawa State when the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) Hudu Yunusa Ari, criminally declared Aishatu Dahiru as winner of the governorship poll but did nothing is to be posted to Imo State. “It is evident that he is a bad influence and cannot be trusted to uphold the principles of fairness, impartiality, and respect for the rule of law. “Of particular concern is the possibility of Commissioner Barde being deployed to Imo State given its electoral challenges, including the controversial Supreme Court judgment that removed Emeka Ihedioha from office and brought in the incumbent Governor Hope Uzodimma. “The delicate nature of the political climate in Imo State makes it even more imperative that individuals with unquestionable integrity and commitment to the democratic process are appointed to oversee the upcoming governorship election… “The integrity of our electoral system is paramount to the preservation of democracy in Nigeria. It is our duty as citizens and as members of civil society to hold public institutions accountable and ensure that those tasked with upholding the law and protecting our democratic rights do so with the highest level of professionalism and integrity.” Read the full article

As Justice Olukayode Ariwoola steps down as the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has expressed skepticism about the appointment of Justice Kudirat Motonmori Kekere-Ekun as the new Acting CJN. The association contends that Justice Kekere-Ekun’s career is not without controversy, citing her role in delivering the judgment in the 2019 Imo State gubernatorial case, where a candidate who came fourth in the election was declared the winner. Read Also : 12 Things to Know About the New CJN Kekere-Ekun, Blocked from the U.S. for Judicial Corruption HURIWA asserts that this judgment was one of the most controversial in the history of the Supreme Court and marked a significant turning point in the judiciary’s decline. Furthermore, HURIWA has raised concerns about Justice Kekere-Ekun’s integrity, pointing to unresolved allegations regarding her failure to declare her assets as required by law. Despite these serious accusations, the Code of Conduct Bureau has not pursued an investigation, leading many to question the transparency and accountability within the judiciary. Pay Attention To: Popular Whistleblower PIDOM Reportedly Kidnapped by Nigerian Govt, David Hundeyin Raises Alarm Moreover, the circumstances surrounding Justice Kekere-Ekun’s elevation to CJN suggest that she enjoys significant political backing, particularly from Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who has a well-documented affinity for individuals from Lagos, where Justice Kekere-Ekun hails from. HURIWA argues that this political patronage will compromise her independence as CJN, leaving little room for the much-needed reform in the judiciary. The association further suggests that, given the current political dynamics, neither the Presidency nor the National Assembly—both of which, according to the group, lack the independence to challenge her appointment—are likely to oppose her becoming the substantive CJN. In light of these developments, HURIWA holds a grim outlook for the future of Nigeria’s judiciary. The association believes that Justice Kekere-Ekun’s tenure will perpetuate the existing culture of nepotism, corruption, and politically motivated decisions that have plagued the judiciary under her predecessor. “The judiciary, as it stands, cannot deliver justice to ordinary Nigerians, as it appears to serve only the interests of the highest bidders and politically exposed persons. The transition from Justice Ariwoola to Justice Kekere-Ekun does not signal a positive change. Instead, it represents a continuation of the judiciary’s decline. “Without a judiciary that is independent, transparent, and committed to upholding the rule of law, HURIWA argues that Nigeria’s democracy is at risk, and the hope for justice remains an elusive dream for the common Nigerian,” the statement, signed by Emmanuel Onwubiko, HURIWA national coordinator, concluded.

By • Olalekan Fagbade President Tinubu under fire allegedly for making ‘lopsided’ appointments in office The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA), a civil society group, has accused President Bola Tinubu of nepotism, alleging that most of the key appointments in his government were allotted to Nigerians from his ethnic group. HURIWA made this known in a statement issued by its coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, stressing that the recent appointments of the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service given to Yoruba people are an attestation. “With President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent approval of the nomination of Olayemi Cardoso to serve as the substantive new Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), some 48 hours after appointing Zachaeus Adedeji as the acting chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service, FIRS, the strong perception that the President is pushing an unseemly pro-ethnic agenda became worryingly stronger,” the group said. “Adedeji is to “serve in an acting capacity for 90 days before his subsequent confirmation as the substantive chairman of FIRS for a term of four years in the first instance. ”With a little over 100 days on the saddle, the President’s appointments have shown he appears to have special consideration for people from his South-West region, especially those with links to Lagos State.” The group cautioned Tinubu, who it accused of assembling his Yoruba and Lagos connections into his government, not to follow the path of his predecessor, former President Muhamamdu Buhari, who reportedly did the same during his eight years in power, stressing that the It said, “If President Tinubu’s appointment of new service (chiefs) sparked new hope and drew deserved plaudits in that it recognised the nation’s diversity, his subsequent appointments curiously depart from that template. “That the disastrous, previous administration of General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd) towed a visionless, divisive path, in the overwhelming tribalistic appointments it made, should never excuse this course that fundamentally degrades the legitimate dream of a new, progressive, inclusive Nigerian state. “Today, the stakes are extremely high and Nigerians are mindful that a failure to achieve democratic stability, through a meritorious, transparent, inclusive governance process may imperil the country’s future as a coherent state. Mere political rewards and seeming ethnic nationalism should not drive the national journey. It is a perilous, avoidable option. “The Human Rights Writers’ Association of Nigeria (HURIWA), strongly believes that this is the wrong path to thread, especially against the background of deep mistrust, misery, political and economic dislocations brazenly birthed by the predecessor administration. We believe that like Caesar’s Wife, the Tinubu administration ought to be above suspicion. “We recall here that the central driving mantra and foundational philosophy on which the ruling All Progressives Congress sold its presidential candidate Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, now President, to Nigerians, was “Renewed Hope.” Nigerians bought into it and voted the Asiwaju and APC to power because it deeply resonated with the populace. But what is the reality? ad “Key appointments traversing the nation’s crucial security, judicial and economic sectors are now unabashedly cornered by the South-West region. A quick, non-exhaustive check-list would include: Petroleum Minister: Bola Tinubu; Chief of Staff: Femi Gbajabiamila; Minister of Justice: Lateef Fagbemi; Minister of Finance and the Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun; Acting Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Folashodun Shonubi who now gives way to a substantive CBN boss Olayemi Cardoso. “Others include: Minister of Marine & Blue Economy: Bunmi Tunji-Ojo; Minister of Communication, Innovation & Digital Economy: Bosun Tijan; simultaneously,
the Chairman of Senate Committee on ICT, Afolabi Salisu, and that of House of Representatives, Adedeji Olajide Odidiomo are both from the South-West; Minister of Power: Adebayo Adelabu; Minister of Transport: Adegboyega Oyetola; Minister of Solid Minerals: Dele Alake; Chief of Army Staff: General Taoreed Lagbaja; Police IG: Kayode Egbetokun; Comptroller-General Customs: Adewale Adeniyi; Comptroller-General Immigration: Adepoju Carol Wura-Ola; FIRS Chairman: Zacchaeus. Adedeji, et cetera.” Speaking in the same vein, the National Publicity Secretary of the apex Northern socio-cultural and political organization, the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), Professor Tukur Muhammad-Baba, knocked Tinubu for giving sensitive and lucrative appointments to persons from the South-West part. Muhammad-Baba, a professor of Sociology, said this in an interview with New Telegraph, and maintained that he spoke in his personal capacity because the Northern group had yet to deliberate on the issue, describing the appointments so far as should not be encouraged in a “deeply fractious federation” like Nigeria. The ACF spokesman also berated the immediate past administration of Buhari for also indulging in sectional appointments but added that it is not an excuse as someone has to break the circle of such appointments. Muhammad- Baba said, “From all indications, most, if not all sensitive or “lucrative” assignments are being given to persons of Southwest extraction. “It’s not ideal in a deeply fractious federation like ours. But the Constitution gives absolute power to the President to make such appointments. A part of the Constitution directs that such appointments must reflect the social diversity of the country in terms of “balancing” of place of origin, indigeneship, ethnicity, religion, etc.” B #Tinubuunderfireformakinglopsidedappointments
