Puppy Love

Some modern headcanons for the dragons as doggos.

Toothless: Black German Shepherd. I'm partial to these dogs. They're just so smart, ornery, protective, and loving. They can be extremely fierce too. If that's not T, I don't know what is.

Hookfang: Red Doberman Pinscher. Apart from the size, I think the temperament fits. These dogs tend to catch an attitude and hold grudges. That's not to say they aren't loving, but they would probably mess with their owners a lot.

Meatlug: Bulldog. This is more so for the appearance side of things because they're both short and stumpy.

Barf and Belch: Two-headed Labrador Retriever. This ties to what I have heard (I don't know if it's true) about them being goofy, fun-loving dogs.

Stormfly: German Shorthair Pointer. I think this one because of them being tracker dogs.

Sleuther: Red and brown Pitbull. The reputation is why here. Pitbulls get the bad rep of being scary and Sleuther also had that because of his fights. Deep down, they're both sweeties with the right friends like anyone else.

Windshear: Gray Saluki. Appearance again because they remind me of how Windshear is long and lanky.

In my modern httyd AU, I interpret Dagur to be a former steroid and meth addict. After deciding to get clean and spending time hitchhiking across the country and camping out, and helping Hiccup and Toothless after a paragliding crash, he decided that he was going to change for the better. So he took up a volunteering opportunity at the rider’s animal sanctuary. Of course he was first given a hamster (shattermaster) to teach him the basics of animal handling, later he adopted a three legged pit bull that was rescued from a dog fighting ring.

He’s not allowed to handle the more dangerous animals yet, but working with animals has been very therapeutic for him and kept him clean, and be able to reconnect with Heather and wind shear (who I interpret as an African grey parrot). He still has starter master who surprisingly formed a bond with sleuther. Like they will sleep together and groom each other and hiccup will often receive pics of sleuther snuggled up on the floor with shatter master sleeping on his paws.

Standing at the mouth of a cave with the harsh winds pulling on his clothes, Hiccup looks into the fierce blizzard. They were trying to avoid it, but they’ve gotten caught in it instead. Now they’re left to stay sheltered until it finally dies down.

“I thought you knew where you were going?” Hiccup asks the only other human being he’s stuck here with. The other two beyond them are dragons. Toothless and Sleuther.

He turns to watch Dagur stoke the fire and stare back at him with wide eyes that perhaps betray just a little bit too much.

“You didn’t?!” Hiccup asks, throwing his hands up. Even Toothless, curled up by the fire, isn’t amused. He likes the cold just as much as his human does; not at all. Even Sleuther isn’t too happy, his claws click in agitation.

“In my defense, I thought I had an idea,” Dagur tells him.

“You thought you had a…” Hiccup breathes in and out deeply before rubbing in his eyes. Really? That’s what they’re caught in this blizzard for? A vague idea?

Rising from his spot at the fire, Dagur jogs over to Hiccup, whose back is now turned to him again. He comes to stand next to him and wraps an arm around his middle.

“Hey, look at the bright side. We get to spend more time together!” He tells him, his usual, somewhat manic, grin on his face.

Looking back at him incredulously, Hiccup’s lips curl up into a soft smile. “Dagur, be honest with me. Did you lead us in the wrong direction just to get me to stay longer?”

With one as chief of Berk and the other as chief of the Berserkers, it’s difficult to see each other on a frequent basis. They have to do with stolen moments like this, especially with Berk in the middle of adjusting to a new chief while at war still with the remains of Drago’s forces. Not that their love isn’t difficult when war isn’t waging. There was an uphill battle in the very beginning. And even now, it’s almost doomed as neither can just leave their tribe to fend for themselves to marry into the other.

Rather than answer his question, Dagur instead steps before him to kiss him and Hiccup responds in kind, cupping his cheeks. They’ll be stuck in this blizzard for the foreseeable future, so they might as well keep each other warm.

Match Made in Valhalla

A very underrated duo to me in RTTE (spoilers) is Dagur and Sleuther.

The way Dagur got both dragons was honestly perfect to me. He started of with a Gronckle because no one in their right mind would give him a dangerous dragon. Then, what does he do? He Dagurs all over the place and somehow makes a Gronckle cool enough to even outmaneuver a Razorwhip. After that, he gets his first already cool dragon. That's fun as it is, but the emotional side makes it so much better.

They're kindred souls. It's possible that Sleuther (or Strykie as I prefer since Dagur always calls him that) used to be less violent before he was captured, but that's not the Triple Strykes we know. We see the one who is ready to kill anyone if he needs to. No hesitation, just violence. Does this not sound like early Dagur? On top of it, they both had adjustment periods with the Riders. Strykie was so difficult for them to train and Dagur still isn't someone you can really tell to not do something if he wants to. Putting these two together shouldn't work. If anything, it should cause them to just be more aggressive since neither really wants to stop, but look at that adorable picture. They're able to understand each other more than the other dragons or Vikings could. As great as Shattermaster was, we didn't see these tender moments between him and Dagur. They were great friends and he was a great starter dragon, but these Dagur and Strykie can relate to the anger they have inside and help keep it down.

We've already seen that Dagur has nightmares. A headcanon of mine is that they both do. Whenever fatigue hits them so much that they can't remain awake to avoid that anymore, one stays guard for the other. When Strykie has a nightmare about his time being forced to fight, Dagur can soothingly wake him up and assure him that he's safe now. When Dagur has a nightmare about (pick a topic. There's plenty to choose from), Strykie is able to do the same.

Also, there's the added cuteness of how they met. Dagur and Shattermaster saved Strykie from getting attacked, then he returned the favor. Strykie is actually the first anything (dragon or character) to choose Dagur, but he did. He waved his stinger and sort of said, "We're friends now." It even took Dagur off guard, but I still think that little moment of Strykie letting him know that he can ride on his back and Dagur realizing that he can is adorable. If I can find an image later, I'll try to add it, but it might have that little search thingy from Pinterest if I can't spot it on Google.

I wish this had been explored some more, so a future fic of mine is going to delve into how they can help one another in these ways. I don't think there's anyone else who could truly get it the way that they would. None of the other humans or reptiles have been prisoners the way that they both have or have done things that would haunt them. Who knows how many dragons Strykie was forced to kill and what mental space he put himself in to be able to stomach it day after day. We already know Dagur has guilt he'll never recover from since he's killed an island + worth of people. Their other friends could support them as they try to change, but they're the only ones who could just look at one another and already know what's being felt because they'd each felt it before too.

My favorite moment in all of httyd rtte is in S3 E8 "Stryke Out" when Hiccup finally gets free from the holding area for the fighting dragons and says "This. Ends. Now!" And the music immediately crescendos as the wild dragons he's spent the episode befriending fly out from behind him to help Toothless and Sleuther

It just makes me so happy

Sleuther, a mistreated rodeo horse, set free by Hiccup’s gang, attacks the people who hurt him in the ring (so horse has ✨trauma✨) but he meets a reformed Dagur and takes an immediate liking to him, helping defend an injured Shattermaster 🐴

I think Dagur would actually be the one to braid his tail, but for this comic I just drew his tail already braided 🤷‍♂️

Of course Dagur being the retired but legendary bronco rider would only ride him bareback, or maybe with a neckrope, dude is really just crazy like that
