soliciting advice from the mentally ill queer community, possibly especially @bananapeppers needed
without rehashing the context too much, as you know i got written up at work for saying the words homophobia and transphobia (yes that’s what the record says lol). my punishment is i have to go to see a therapist (counseling from a therapist or therapy from a counselor not clear) that they have chosen, and i have to consent to release some information about these sessions to my employer
going to set aside that i would not choose this therapist in the first place given any ability to consent at all in this scenario because she has what i consider to be a fake certifying degree from an online for profit institution and she does not work for a mental healthcare provider (she works for a company that sells telecounseling packages to human resources departments) lol, i have additional concerns about the appropriateness of the assignment because on her linkedin she identifies herself as catholic (specifically catholic educated)
fully no anti catholic bias intended (i love the catholic homosexual reading this) and to be fully honest, i have no other evidence on hand that she may be homophobic—no questionable social media or organizational affiliations. she frankly may very well not be. but i would never choose a healthcare provider who identifies their catholicism on their professional website to handle issues that i know to be controversial among catholics (like at all as a first choice but especially) without explicit reassurance that they are pro-queer and have experience in queer informed counseling (or are abortion loving if that were the situation, or believe that divorce should be legal and celebrated, whatever it may be) (once more full apologies for the stereotyping lol)
so the advice i’m looking for is how to have a conversation with her to establish whether she’s a queer friendly therapist (and there are some finer details i’d especially like to clarify). i know many of you have had to have these conversations and i’m wondering if you’d all give me pointers or some concrete questions to ask.
additionally, in a worse case scenario, can anyone who feels up to it share experiences or advice about surviving homophobic therapy experiences lol :/
a few notes:
i obviously considered not complying and lawyering up. it’s not off the table lol but there are various reasons i opted not to. the most pragmatic one is that i know many members of my union have to go through similar processes as the result of discipline and i want to see what that’s like for them. i could also gather evidence to build the case for making demands against this practice (which so far many unions consent to for various reasons even as they are legally questionable, if you’re in this situation in your union OR are mad about your union caving to this practice feel free to dm me to chat strategy.)
additionally, i probably cannot ask for a different therapist regardless of the outcome here, but having an explicit conversation is good for my case regardless. the best case scenario from here on would actually probably be for her to say i’m not comfortable with my ability to handle this topic but i can refer you to an explicitly queer informed counselor who for some reason also has a webtv therapy degree and works for the HR app.
why do i want to explicitly know that she’s okay on queer issues (or not) (im asking myself)? for one i am not sure i can literally survive yet more homophobic harassment at work (yes i know i’m baby but i make $20k working for a library this is the one thing i’m owed ok). but for another thing i do think it would be better to have some kind of record that they forced me to go to a homophobic counselor as punishment for making a complaint about homophobic harassment, if that’s the case.
the most generous read of the objective of this forced therapy would be to discuss more constructive behaviors lol for communicating about anti-queer behavior at work etc. perhaps even some emotional counseling regarding the honestly extreme toll this experience has had on my life. but i can’t proceed in good faith without a counselor who acknowledges that what i experienced was queer/phobic and that i have a right to not experience those things at work. that’s all. i do not want to sit in any additional meetings where i’m told that i have to listen to the perspective of the coworker who doesn’t believe she should have to respect queer people at work. however, if i do not proceed in good faith, i will be reported to my employer as not compliant and could face actual consequences.
please @ me thank you

My Top Posts in 2022:

I got the job!!
The bariatric clinic called me yesterday.
I thought they were calling about a second interview, asking for references, something like that.
NOPE
They offered me the job, at $4/hr more than I make now!
HOOOLY CRAP. This is AWESOME. It’s also a little scary. They want a 2-year commitment (years are uncertain with cancer) and they’re definitely gonna drop that extra $4/hr of work on me, but...
I’ll have a good team behind me.
I’ll be doing work that I want to do, that feels important, that feels more like working than drowning in calls. (Even on the busiest 911 days, even when I took the 60-80 calls per day I take now, there was a damn good reason)
If I’m right, and I’ll be actively looking for reasons I am, this will be the best of badging office work (a team, face to face interaction, out of the house enrichment because this zoo animal needs it) and the call center (healthcare, genuinely improving lives, and no fucking stairs).
Wish me luck!
Wish me strength!
And wish me patience for my 10 remaining call center shifts.

My #1 post of 2022
Hi new followers!
I'm Jen.
Tumblr media
I have metastatic breast cancer. On a practical level, that means I'm tired all the time from treatment and my life will probably be shorter than yours.
I live with my husband, my son Jay, my cat Soba (shown), and my corgi Momo in the Denver metro area.
I have no picture of Jay for you. He's 15, trans, and hates getting his photo posted. He likes getting his photo taken, and I have plenty of photos of him, but he's not about being on Mom's socials. I respect that.
This is my husband.

Mental healthcare in America is so messed up. There is a hyped up culture about talk therapy which isn’t helpful to most people when there aren’t evidence based methods being used. There is no way to deal with traumatic events right away bc every therapist has an 8 month waitlist and psych departments in hospitals are run differently in every state. There aren’t ways to effectively evaluate therapists. Doctors are prescribing medicines without consulting therapists (I’ve heard multiple accounts of doctors misdiagnosing disorders and providing counterintuitive drugs). Like I could go on and on. But basically if you’re looking for therapy and have the means to do so, my best advice is to go to a university-run clinic. You’re most likely to get evidence based treatment, thorough assessments, and the best care. This isn’t to say that no one has bad experiences there, but it’s the best care you can find when you can’t dish out $300/hr for private practice.

This is such a damn shame and, unfortunately, is not limited to the food industry. Restaurants, check. Retail, check. Healthcare, check. Stop telling your employees to “stay home when sick” and then offering them no sick time or rolling sick time into “PTO” but still giving the standard two weeks a year.
When I got Covid in early 2022, it was specifically due to the doctor coming in, even though she did not feel well, because she felt pressured by the C-suite that managed the chain of practices. She worked 1.5 days while sick and, despite being vaccinated, following good protocol as best as possible including consistent masking, 2 of the 4 office staff also got sick a few days later (the 2 of us who worked most closely with her).
When she went home sick, we were told we could continue coming to work until/unless we showed symptoms. We had to insist on quarantining and they really tried to talk us out of it, saying “protocol says...”. The other 2 employees did, in fact, keep working because they couldn’t afford the time off. I spent the next 3 days, while I waited to see if I developed symptoms (which I did), very, very closely monitoring the CDC website and taking notes of any regulations and recommendations that I could report back when I was, inevitably, “strongly persuaded” to return to work.
I was supposed to have my first booster shot the same week I was exposed. The pharmacist specifically told me I had to wait x number of days to determine if I could proceed or not (can’t if you’re infected). When I relayed this to my HR/manager, I was told a real doctor needed to determine when I could return to work; a pharmacist was not the right kind of doctor to make that call.
When I actually tested positive, I was given a few days off (but oh, if you can manage some stuff from your laptop, that’d be great). When I did finally return to work, it was too soon and I still felt really horrible and only managed to work every other day because I was pushing myself to try to be there and my body wasn’t having it. The Friday of that first week back, I tried to leave early and was told I couldn’t because “someone who can make sales really needs to be in the office”. The doctor was still out, mind you, so the office was not seeing patients or administering care; any sales were eyewear sales of people with existing prescriptions or vitamins/eye drops. The other person in the office who tested positive was asked to return to work while still feeling unwell, until she basically told them to fuck off, that she still had 103 fever.
Sick days are only an excuse for companies to cover their asses with the “we told them not to come in”. Sick days are only accepted when it doesn’t affect profit and we live in a world where everything = profit so don’t you dare get sick because companies will actively push back against those who attempt to actually follow these cya policies.

Streamlining Operations with a Visitor Management System
In today’s world, businesses and organizations face the challenge of managing visitor access efficiently and securely. A Visitor Management System (VMS) is a comprehensive solution that simplifies the check-in process, enhances security, and improves the overall visitor experience. In this blog, we’ll explore what a visitor management system is, its benefits, key features, and best practices for implementation.
What Is a Visitor Management System?
A Visitor Management System is a software application designed to track and manage visitors entering and exiting a facility. This system automates the visitor check-in and check-out process, capturing essential information about visitors, including their identities, purpose of visit, and duration of stay. A VMS can be used in various settings, including corporate offices, educational institutions, healthcare facilities, and event venues.
Key Benefits of a Visitor Management System
Enhanced Security A VMS improves security by tracking who is in the building at any given time. This information is crucial for emergency situations, allowing staff to account for all visitors. The system can also integrate with security protocols, such as issuing temporary access badges or notifications to hosts.
Streamlined Check-In Process Traditional visitor check-in procedures can be time-consuming and cumbersome. A VMS automates the process, allowing visitors to check in quickly, reducing wait times, and improving overall efficiency.
Improved Visitor Experience A smooth and efficient check-in process enhances the visitor experience. With features like self-service kiosks, mobile check-in, and digital visitor badges, organizations can provide a more welcoming environment for guests.
Data Collection and Reporting Visitor management systems gather valuable data about visitor patterns, allowing organizations to analyze trends and make informed decisions regarding space usage and security measures. This data can be used for reporting purposes, helping organizations assess their visitor management processes.
Compliance and Audit Trails Many industries have specific regulations regarding visitor access and security. A VMS helps organizations comply with these regulations by maintaining detailed records of visitor information, check-in/check-out times, and access granted.
Key Features of a Visitor Management System
Visitor Registration A VMS allows visitors to register their details, including name, contact information, purpose of visit, and the person they are visiting. This information can be collected through a self-service kiosk or a mobile app.
Pre-Registration Hosts can pre-register visitors, allowing for faster check-in. The system can send confirmation emails or notifications with instructions and information on what to expect upon arrival.
Badge Printing The system can generate visitor badges that display essential information, such as the visitor's name, photo, and access levels. These badges help identify visitors and enhance security within the facility.
Notifications A VMS can send real-time notifications to hosts when their visitors arrive, ensuring they are prepared to greet them promptly.
Emergency Management In case of emergencies, a VMS provides a comprehensive list of all visitors on the premises, helping security and emergency personnel account for everyone during evacuations or drills.
Integration Capabilities Many VMS solutions can integrate with existing security systems, access control systems, and HR software, providing a seamless visitor management experience.
Best Practices for Implementing a Visitor Management System
Assess Your Needs Before selecting a VMS, evaluate your organization’s specific requirements. Consider factors such as visitor volume, security protocols, and integration with existing systems.
Choose the Right Vendor Research various VMS vendors and compare their features, pricing, and customer support. Look for a vendor with a proven track record and positive user reviews.
Train Staff Ensure that all staff members involved in the visitor management process receive thorough training on how to use the system effectively. This training will help minimize disruptions during implementation.

Employee Onboarding: How Background Verification Fits In Seamlessly
In today’s competitive job market, hiring the right employees goes beyond just reviewing resumes and conducting interviews. One critical element of the onboarding process is background verification, ensuring that organizations make informed decisions while minimizing potential risks. When integrated seamlessly, background checks not only secure the hiring process but also contribute to building a safer and more productive workplace. Let’s explore how background verification plays a vital role in employee onboarding and how businesses can streamline the process.
Tumblr media
Why Background Verification is Crucial in Onboarding
Ensures the Accuracy of Information Resumes and applications may not always paint the full picture of a candidate’s professional or personal history. By conducting thorough background checks, employers can verify the accuracy of the information provided—such as employment history, education credentials, and professional qualifications. This validation ensures that only credible candidates are selected, reducing the chances of fraud or misrepresentation.
Enhances Workplace Safety Background verification also helps maintain a safe work environment by screening for potential red flags, such as criminal history or substance abuse issues. Employees with a clean record contribute to a culture of trust and security, which is vital for businesses operating in industries where safety is paramount, such as healthcare, education, or finance.
Protects Company Reputation Every new hire represents your organization, and a misstep in onboarding could negatively affect your company’s reputation. Conducting a thorough background check during the onboarding process ensures that candidates align with the company’s values and have no history that could potentially harm the brand image. A single bad hire can lead to legal issues, financial losses, or tarnished public trust.
How Background Verification Fits Seamlessly into Onboarding?
Tumblr media
Integrating with HR Systems Thanks to modern technology, background verification can be effortlessly integrated into existing HR systems. Automated background checks reduce the need for manual paperwork, saving time and resources. By syncing background verification platforms with applicant tracking systems (ATS) or HR management software, companies can quickly initiate checks, receive results, and make decisions without disrupting the onboarding process.
Real-Time, Swift Processing Gone are the days when background checks took weeks to complete. Today, with advanced AI and data analytics, the process is faster and more efficient. Employers can receive real-time updates and quick turnarounds, making it possible to complete the onboarding process without unnecessary delays.
Transparency with Candidates Clear communication with candidates about the background verification process ensures transparency and fosters trust. Informing candidates upfront about the checks that will be conducted and obtaining their consent helps avoid misunderstandings and builds a positive employer-employee relationship from the start. Many candidates appreciate companies that prioritize safety and security through thorough screening processes.
Compliance with Legal Requirements Navigating the legal landscape of employee screening is critical. Background verification helps companies remain compliant with local, state, and federal regulations, such as the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) in the U.S. or GDPR compliance in Europe. Ensuring that your onboarding process follows legal standards mitigates the risk of potential lawsuits or penalties.
Best Practices for Incorporating Background Verification in Onboarding Standardize the Process: Establish a consistent background verification process for all hires, regardless of position. This ensures fairness and minimizes bias. Tailor Checks to Job Roles: Not all positions require the same level of scrutiny. Tailor the depth of your background checks based on the specific job role and industry regulations. Maintain Confidentiality: Handle sensitive data responsibly to ensure candidate privacy and maintain trust. Review Regularly: Periodically review your background verification process to align it with current industry trends and legal standards. Conclusion Background verification is an integral part of the employee onboarding process, protecting organizations from potential risks while building a culture of trust and safety. By integrating seamless, automated systems and adhering to legal standards, companies can ensure that background checks are completed efficiently without disrupting the flow of onboarding. Ultimately, a well-executed verification process helps secure not only the right talent but also the long-term reputation and success of the organization.
