Hoooooooooooooooooooooooooo boy.

I hate it.

I can’t really be dispassionate about this one at the moment so I’m not going to try. I could get into ways I found the dialogue weird or what constitutes an emotional reaction to a thing consistent with existing canon, and I am sure those are things I will look at in the future, once this season is finished in particular, but this is not that kind of post. I am not trying to persuade anyone of anything here, I just need to yell, so consider yourself duly warned. This is not analysis, this is not meta, this is just Feelings and what I feel is I Hate It.

I hate it.

I hate the manufactured conflict between Wash and Carolina. I hate that this was thought necessary at all. I hate that it’s been six seasons and they still can’t be allowed to trust each other. 

I hate that we got the briefest glimpse of them being close and trusting and confiding in one another last season and that’s now being ripped away due to what I can’t help cynically thinking is probably the fan backlash to even the possibility of Washlina being a thing last season.

I hate that Carolina got to be one of the Reds and Blues for one hot second and we got one episode of them, all of them, acting like family in “Previously On,” and everything since has served to undermine those relationships, not just between Wash and Carolina but between all of the Reds and Blues.

I hate that this is being hung on Carolina when the person responsible for giving Wash information on his condition should be Grey, his fucking doctor. Yes, Carolina made the wrong decision, a decision that should never have been hers in the first place, and the only reason it was made her decision is to force conflict between them and I hate it.

I hate that we are still, six seasons later, framing Carolina as always being in the wrong and always having bad judgment. I hate that everything has to be made her fault. I hate that every season we have to invent new things she did wrong and must grovel and apologize for while Wash is always, always the helpless innocent baby victim and and if he did anything wrong it’s in the past and we can play it as a joke but he must never, ever face any real consequences for it.

I hate that fucking “When Your Middle Name is Danger” is playing over Wash as he speaks goddamn it that’s the Meta theme. THINGS MEAN THINGS. I don’t care that you only had enough music budget for the Cosmic Powers and you’re being forced to reuse old Trocadero tunes the rest of the time, I love a good Trocadero but things mean things. If this doesn’t mean anything and that piece was just chosen to sound ominous and dramatic, that’s bad, and if it was chosen as a way of explicitly linking Wash’s injury to Maine’s, that’s honestly even worse because instead of letting this Wash writing stand on its own, you’re just mining past storylines, better storylines, for pathos--trying to prop up these writing decisions by reminding us of something we already know about.

And you know what, yeah, I’m not even gonna pretend I don’t have strong feelings about Maine, and it’s sure not because the writers ever took the time to develop Maine as a character in his own right so I’ve done a lot of my own lifting on that and that in itself is a bias, FULLY ACKNOWLEDGED. but I am 9000x over Wash Angst ruling everything. In fandom, when I see other characters’ traits and backstories and even dialogue ripped from them and given to Wash, I grit my teeth and hit the back button. Because it’s fandom. It’s not canon. But this is canon. That’s not Wash’s theme, the Meta’s story is not Wash’s story and Maine’s tragedy is not Wash’s tragedy. It’s Maine’s. Not everything has to be about Wash. Not everything has to be a fucking reference to something else. Sometimes you just need to do the damn thing and let it be a straight shot.

But you can’t do that, Joe, can you. 

You don’t trust a story to be its own thing, to speak for itself.

(Deep breath.)

I know the season’s not over. I know this new arc is still in its first act, and things may yet resolve in a way I can stand. I can’t get my hopes up for much more than that, but I acknowledge that it is possible. I hope it’s the case.

Right now I just hate it.
