A thought occurred to me

As much as we know Makkers was in on his own escape from imprisonment, he couldn't really be entirely in charge from his cell. Nolan was.

And sure he's still the commander, but there are moments during the escape where he had to let Nolan take the lead. He watches him give orders efficiently, watches him projecting calm, collected command...

He'd be lying to himself if he didn't find that incredibly attractive in a self-satisfied kind of way. After all, he got Nolan to where he was in Konni group. Watching it pay off like this was beautiful.

And letting Nolan take point gave him plenty of opportunities to catch glimpses of his second's best asset, of course. He's been living under a rock for 4 years--he's allowed.

Makarov let him in the Inner Circle because he was impressed with his "precise execution" and great leadership skills, so he'd be even prouder to see his most trusted man get better at it over time. Part of him is sad he missed all those four years, watching him grow and carry out everything perfectly, but it all pays off in the end.

I think in Makarov's absence Ivan and Nolan were co-leading the company, but it's clear who came on top and who Makarov prefers lol.

And him taking a tiny step back at times to admire all that is so sweet. 🥹🫶

and since he knows i'll pull away if i start to feel nervous he'll js pull up my hand to his lips and kiss it,,, no matter if we're in fucking public (he's a bitch. /aff) or js the two of us, he'll do that to reassure me it's fine and he won't judge. still get nervous and pull away most times but he's working on it, i'm working on it ; we're both working on it so it's okay <3
