The Rookies!

"Between the Upgrade and Quatros missions, Breez, Furno and Surge were dispatched to patrol the K9-10 sector, where they discover the remains of an old Hero Factory from the earliest days of the company before the invention of faster than light travel. After barely protecting the miners of the K9-10 colony they find out that the facility is still functional and it's able to upgrade them! Equipped with their old armor and upgraded versions of their old weapons they face the Space Pirates once again!"

These are my last Hero February builds unfortunately, I'm going back to school this week. Having watched Transformers One recently I'm feeling very inspired to make some more bots so expect a few in the future.

BRAIN ATTACK Furno XL Revamp

Was never a big fan of Furno back in the day, though I’ve grown a finer appreciation for him in later years. I wasn’t a tremendous fan of his XL set since it was so much more fragile and awkward than Stormer XL.

Here I have heavily modified the torso and lower legs. Also did away with the mace shoulder armor in favor of Stringer's addons for added detail.

Didn’t have much to do in art class today so I drew Furno. The Ninjargon translates to William Furno btw.

Also here are some headcanons I have for HF which I originally posted on amino. I also have a few newer ones.

- Furno is the shortest hero on the alpha team standing at 5’1”

- stormer is addicted to yogurt and has a secret stash somewhere. Nobody outside the alpha team knows about this.

- stringer hoards house plants and can keep them alive

- zib likes culinary arts. Surge sometimes steals his kitchen creations.

- every hero on the alpha team has an elemental power, just like the elemental masters in ninjago.

- the world of hero factory is one of the 16 realms of ninjago(i know it’s pretty far fetched. I think Bionicle could also be a realm too)

- black phantom has an elemental power too. And so does Mr. Makuro.

Okay damn, long post time:

Full disclaimer a lot of this shit is disjointed and me just redoing a lot of Hero Factory lore with zero regard for much of anything:

Basically, my version of Akiyama Makuro is that he used to be a teen genius who was a sidekick to a legion of galactic superheroes that he idolized. All of these heroes were killed in a battle against Black Phantom and his Legion of Darkness over the planet Quatros and its natural resource Quaza.

The grief-stricken Makuro would eventually research the Quaza and find that it can be imprinted with memories and brain-patterns, but after he figures out a way to synthesize it, Witch Doctor exiles him from Quatros so he and his allies won't desecrate it further. With the Quaza in hand, Makuro begins work on forming Hero Factory and using the Quaza to resurrect his heroes in the form of robotic sentries that will enforce law and order across the galaxy. Unknown to him, Black Phantom had also imprinted his own brain-pattern into the Quaza in Makuro's possession as part of an elaborate plan to get revenge on the sole survivor of the heroes that defeated him.

Hero Factory is soon formed, but Makuro's young daughter died from illness. In his grief, she ends up imprinted into the Quaza, and is later reborn as Natalie Breez. Makuro as a partial result of his despair would fully abandon flesh and blood and become a brain preserved in a cybernetic body. Meanwhile, Black Phantom's consciousness is born as Von Ness, who would later betray Hero Factory to become Von Nebula, an unwitting pawn to Black Phantom's ultimate revenge.

From here on, a lot of the same events as the original series happens, but with a bunch of other weird shit and different contexts because I felt like it:

William Furno is actually a duplicate of XPlode, the original William Furno who went rogue. Furno would eventually find the truth and abandon Hero Factory to become a vigilante.

A lot of the villains in general are secretly former Heroes who were effectively abandoned by the Factory and labelled as the bad guys. Von Nebula's gang is mainly comprised of victims of this and he's ultimately trying to avenge their mistreatment.

Recon Team is secretly trying to take over Hero Factory by exposing much of Makuro's past crimes, including the villains being former heroes and the origins of Quaza. They realize Daniel Rocka would be against the coup and tried to kill two birds with one stone by causing him to crash on Quatros and having his remains expose Quaza's origins. They don't know that they're pawns to Black Phantom.

Witch Doctor isn't Aldous Witch, he's a native inhabitant of Quatros trying to defend his home from those wanting to drain it of Quaza.

The Breakout has catastrophic ramifications as a lot of secrets coming out causes Hero Factory's standing to completely collapse; the villains effectively take over Makuhero City as its protectors while the Heroes either go on the run or join the villains.

And as mentioned before all of this is basically Black Phantom's elaborate plot to take down Makuro for defeating him decades ago. In fact, Black Phantom's been long dead. He's now basically an AI copy of himself piloting his armor, but since only his biometrics can make the suit function his skeletal remains are in there. My take on him is that much of a hater.

So basically, my idea for a Hero Factory fanon is that all that shit happened and now the Heroes (and villains) need to find a way to settle their differences and all their hangups about their origins to fight an evil French skeleton in a suit of armor before he can fully wreak havoc on a defenseless galaxy.

I am probably overthinking things but here's a rant motivated by this post (or rather, some of its responses) (tw: some discussion of ACAB, nothing explicit):

Does ACAB apply to the Heroes?

In real life, cops are bastards because they exist to enforce an oppressive status quo, and are rewarded for their bastardry with functional immunity from the same laws they are supposed to uphold.

In Hero Factory... it's complicated. Yes, the corporation has the Heroes cooperate with local law enforcement in many cases (for example, Stormer's buddy buddy relationship with the cop in ep3), but it is a private corporation, and given the whole Galactic Conspiracy plotline in the late books before it all got cancelled, this doesn't seem to be a universal thing. Hero Factory exists, in-universe, to deal with the growing supervillain problem, which could be tangentially regarded as law enforcement, but only in cases where local enforcement is unable to handle it (like all the acid spitting weirdos). Hero Factory Incorporated gives the impression of a private emergency services company, rather than necessarily a law enforcement agency (at least in my opinion). They even have dispatchers like a 911 call center.

Also, the franchise likes to blur the lines between "person" and "thing." One of the most obvious examples I can think of is how the robots all refer to the techno-organic species in Savage Planet as "animals" and "wildlife," despite many of them being sapient and perfectly capable of speech. There's also how they treat their own: Daniella Capricorn literally refers to her camera bot as her "mindless slave," and nobody seems to bat an eye at that, and the Fire Lord and his crew became that way because of an ill-advised "upgrade" that was intended to increase their efficiency, presumably by the company that made them for mining.

The Heroes are considered "people," but also products. They are advertised to the public in showcases and commercials, they are maintained by the company that produced them, and when they wear out, they're sent off to live elsewhere to fulfill a similar role. I don't think they're really allowed to decide what they want to do with their lives, because most that do wind up becoming Villains, if Core Hunter and Von Nebula are any indication.

Presumably, this sort of universal dehumanization is why things like Furno zapping a prisoner in episode 1, Stormer dismantling their radio guy for insulting him in Hero Factory FM, and other instances of "police brutality" in the franchise isn't really treated seriously in-universe. They're robots, they can be repaired and replaced if need be, who cares if they get hurt?

Honestly, on a Doylist level, it's obviously just regular children's copaganda. You're not supposed to think too deeply about the implications about the metaphorical cops literally being owned by a private corporation, who engage in casual acts of excessive force and brutality for the sake of a laugh, and how just about everyone in the setting gets all kinds of roughed up on the regular because they're robots so it's fine.

I don't know where I'm going with this. I did mistake Surge for a girl when I first looked up HF on tumblr and saw the HRT post, so gender stuff with him is absolutely on the menu in my mind. But also, I'm not sure if he'd be allowed at Pride. I guess it depends on where you draw the line. I stayed up way too late rambling about robot philosophy.

I'm not the only one? I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE!! Fellow HF fans who stumble upon this post...who's your personal favorite hero(es) and why? As a kid, I used to be a big Furno fan (obvious, I know), but current me's drawn toward Stringer and Nex. I just find their personalities fun and even relatable! I do wish they had more time in the spotlight though...

Also, what were those designers thinking with Nex during the Breakout era? LOOK AT HIM. WHAT WERE THEY THINKING.

Stringer's look during that era was pretty cool though, really like how they changed things up with the color palette and gave him a (literally) banger weapon.

Alarms started to blare and Mirage began to slowly run towards the mission control. "Sorry flames, I think we”ll have to talk this out later. Gotta go." Furno just stood there and stared as the person who he had fallen so hard for ran away. He sighed and headed to Mac, since he asked for some help with rearranging his studio. Apparently the way things were right now was the cause of the lower audience rates (he said something about acoustics or something like that, but if Furno were to admit, he zoned out after the first two minutes of the rant). In the meantime he tried to calm himself down. Hopefully he will be able to ask them out when they come back from whatever the hell that mission was.

Now was his chance and he knew it perfectly well. Except his comm went off. "Furno, come over to the bridge, we’ve got a new assignment". He nearly threw the device into the wall, but he managed to keep his cool, which should make his mentor proud. "Yes Stormer, coming over" yep, today was not the day…

Okay, new day, clean slate. Let’s do this one more time.

“Hey Mirage!” “So sorry, can’t talk right now, some idiot left their oven on and now a whole avenue is on fire-” “Sure thing…”

“Hey, can I leave early? I have some business to deal with and-” Zib just raised an eyebrow quizzically. “So doing whatever it is that you want to do is more important than having a core recharge? Way to go William, if this attitude continues you’ll end up sooner on a junkyard than anyone ever did.” The red hero just rolled his eyes and obliged. Maybe next week will be better…

"Mirage!" The person in question turned around to face Furno and smiled. "Hey there fireworks, how have you been?" He just shook his head and retried asking the ultimate question. "Not important. Listen, I’ve got a question for you-" just as he was about to finally ask the forsaken question. Just when he almost asked. Just then did another member of Omicron yell after the duo. "Oi, you two loverbirds! You gonna join the party or just stand there like losers!" "Oh shut up will you? Besides we ain’t even together!" Now was his cue. "Would you like to?"

The higher ranked hero just looked at him surprised. “Wh- could you repeat?” The hothead inhaled deeply and prepared himself for eventual rejection. “Look, all this time I’ve been trying to simply ask you out. So here I am, finally asking if you’d like to go out sometime?” The other hero just smiled lightly. “Sure, how about I start with introducing you to my team? Besides you’re now technically invited to the party was well” Relief washed over Furno as he nodded. “That would be nice, yes.”  Little did the duo know that in he background members of Omicron exchanged won or lost money. Turns out bets are not always the best idea.

Because art block is a thing, have an older HF drawing I did last year. Also, have my elemental power headcanons for HF characters. Some are pretty self explanatory and are sprinkled with Ninjago lore. Oh and a while ago, I even created a Tournament of Elements version of Hero Factory, mostly as a joke but I guess I’m set on making designs for all of them now. I haven’t posted that on tumblr yet. It was in my amino page though.

I don’t want to start getting repetitive since these HF builds are all so similar, so I’ll just lump all three of these into one big post.
