The thud of big paws against stone echoed through the gloomy cavern. Trondo, the Dragon Assassin, paced restlessly. Eyes fixed upon the intruder, his tail twitched with agitation. A lone figure, cloaked with the shadows of the cavern, dared to follow him. How…inconsiderate.

''Who are you?'' Trondo's voice rumbled through the cavern, low and deadly. ''I don't like strangers… So answer away!''

The figure turns out to be a woman, with white hair cut uneven and short, and streaks of pink and blue haphazardly dyed. She smiles at him, toting what looks like a large wooden club in the shape of a bat, dappled with many studs along the wood. She braces the tip against the cavern floor and leans on it with both of her arms. "Sorry darlin', ain't sure what yer here for! I wasn't followin' ya, I'm just lookin' for somethin' in here. Hopefully yer not here for th' same thing or we might hafta duke it out. But maybe not-- somethin' tells me I might've done left Kansas by bein' here!"

She smiles sweetly, tilting her head. "But damn, if yer Toto, I ain't complainin'. Ain't never seen a man so big an' scaly b'fore."

The stars glimmered above as the fey took a seat within the gardens, taking a moment to run her hands through the cool grass before wrapping her cloak around herself. She was never outside her room at this time, yet tonight her mind could not be quieted and neither tea or meditation had helped. So now she sat beneath the stars, hoping to clear her mind when she heard a gentle voice behind her.

the speed with which brennan/evan decided to not only kill philtrum but to snap his wand to do so felt so satisfying (and hot), but also the way he did it (leaning into influencing the mind, directly shutting down the brain without any fanfare) draws a sharp contrast to the way philtrum chose to use magic, which is... not in an advantageous way given their location, right? if this was about getting them away from her/seizing the magical objects, she could've just as (or, given the rules as we understand them, much more) easily used some mind control/confusion spell to send them walking away. she wasn't casting intelligently given that magic is an extremely scarce resource there and also given that they're on the Mind magic island; she kind of just did exactly the sort of spell that was used to try to kill evan during the game in season 1, which makes sense given aabria's explanation of this being a group of people who would sacrifice anything to maintain their way of life and their sense of self.

and it just adds to the sinister energy to the island; it implies (perhaps unfairly, we have a sample size of one) that even after all this time on the island, they don't know what the island is about and why it costs them so much magic to do the things that used to be easy. they truly have no idea that they're on the fuck with your head island, probably because the island is fucking with their heads to keep them here and keep them hungry for magic and keep them from questioning if they should be living like this and make them spend every drop of magic that they can squeeze out of everything they have and everyone around them. this island is a like a massive parasite living in their minds pushing them to harvest resources that they think is necessary for their survival but is really being surrendered to feed the parasite. fuck man i KNEW the pretty green-grass blue-sky island was going to be the most fucked up one

bakugo goes back into the field after eight months of paternity leave and instead of the pumping in his veins, all he feels is fear―unlike anything he's ever felt before.

it rings deep in his bones, crawls up his spine and into the back of his head; it rattles around his heartbeat. he didn't feel this at 15, with no pulse, near death with blood splattered all over his chest.

yet here he is now, at 35, standing face-to-face with a villain not any larger than he is. there's no real threat besides the explosives strapped to the pillars of this evacuated building; the worst that could happen is that the entire structure could collapse if they're set off.

―which, he can avoid; could hightail out of the area using cluster easily. but the pressure feels bigger somehow, the possibility of a failure weighs heavier. his first thought is you and the baby. his little family.

"you should start going back to the field," you whispered one night, your arms wrapped around his waist as he cradled his little girl to sleep.

he'd wanted to take the whole year off, just until she would start walking. just until you were more rested. settled.

but, you know bakugo and what makes him who he is, you know being a hero is more than just his job; how he misses the thrill of it, sneaking looks at his phone every time he hears anything from the news.

so he's here now, a few months too early, and it terrifies him―how he doesn't feel the same way he used to. it's paralyzing; one wrong move, one reckless mistake and it could all be over.

there's so much more to lose.
