Hi helloo, I’m a huge fan of your art and its gotten me into a handful of podcasts that I now constantly obsess over.
I’ve seen your art of Moist and Discworld as a whole, but I’ve never seen anything else about this piece of media in my life. Obviously, I assumed it would be up my alley since I’ve enjoyed so many other things you have brought to my attention and with that in mind, I started doing some research on how to get into it.
After looking into it and finding that it is a 41 book series with no specific order, I am super overwhelmed lmao.
So! I wanted to know where you recommend starting?
I originally was going to just go for the 3 where Moist is the protag, but then I saw a graphic about how they all connect and now I’m unsure if I should do that or start with like Guards! Guards! Because it eventually connects with his?? And oh boy am I at a loss 😂 I even watched a video about where I could start and I’m still confused so I figured I’d just ask you 🥴
definitely start with going postal !!!! it’s super good and an easy intro to the series !!! guards! guards! is also a good one to read after that, as well as mort, wyrd sisters, the color of magic, and the wee free men, which are all starters for different plot lines :))
Also there are plenty of stand alone books !! like the truth and monstrous regiment !!!

Wildest dreams wishes for Good Omens Season 3 finale which will probably not come true but I can still hope hey!
Number 45
I want Crowley (or maybe even Muriel) to eventually find the derringer, but the hollowed out book he finds it in is a copy of Twilight. Hehe.
Either that or it has to be a Discworld novel. Question is which Discworld novel is most appropriate? Small Gods perhaps? Mort? Reaper Man? Interesting Times? Something else entirely?
Thoughts and opinions always welcome. (The Twilight thing made me laugh though when I thought of it).
If you want to read my previous wildest dreams you can a list of them in the pinned index on my blog.

Such a good reading plan! And why Guards! Guards! in particular after the Hobbit? I'm so curious about your thought process here!
As for me, hiiii, I'm good, just came back from a good vacation which I honestly deserved hehe
You absolutely do deserve a great vacation! I'm glad you had a good time!
As for Guards! Guards! I feel like reading The Hobbit is going back to Discworld's roots, because Middle Earth is where it all began for Terry Pratchett. And even though there are 7 books before it in the Discworld series, I (personally) feel like G!G! is where Terry really started to get the worldbuilding established in its own right so it's the one I feel naturally drawn to next, if that makes any kind of sense.
Also, you know. Big dragon.

Hi there!
Ive recently stumbled across your works, and I just wanted to say that I enjoy your writing soso much!! Each time i read any of ur pieces, i feel ever so blessed that i can read them for freee,,, ??like wow!! I absolutely love your characterization of arthur, and any piece of banter you write never fails to make me laugh!
Your writing style is so addictive, ive honestly found myself missing it when I read anything else. Because of this, id like to ask if you have any book recs? hehee anything that inspired that brain and writing of yours seems like it would be a worthwile read!! From ur alltime favs, or recent favs, comfort books, or books that gave u personal epiphanies, pls feel free to not hold back !! (If its not too much trouble)
And once again, thank you soso much for all your lovely works!! 💗
I LOVE talking about books, so thank you so much for this ask. This is a very truncated list of some of my favourite authors and books because if I wanted to talk about all of them, that would be a post as long as one of my fics.
First up is Terry Pratchett, who I came to rather late; I just started reading Discworld in 2020, despite @clonemaster-general and @jinxedwood telling me years earlier I should read him, so they should feel free to be smug about the fact that I ignored their sound advice for a long time and then went, "Ok, where do I sign up for the cult" after reading approximately one (1) Pratchett novel.
Discworld is a fantasy satire series that's over 40 books long, but those 40+ books simply take place in the same world and do not have to be read in order, although I would recommend reading any subseries featuring the same characters in order (the City Watch books starting with 'Guards! Guards', the Witches starting with ''Wyrd Sisters' etc.) Pratchett did write some non-Discworld books, although the bulk of his very large body of work is that series. He was a very gifted writer who was able to present the stupidity and injustices of humanity in a way that made you laugh and feel that it's bearable to live alongside these things. No other author has made me laugh so much at dumb little puns or dick jokes and then suddenly slapped me with a banger of a line about human nature.
'The Once and Future King' by T.H. White. A retelling of Malory's 'Le Morte d'Arthur'. It's silly, it's touching, it asks why humans go to war. If you're tired of relentless grimdark, this book shows you that a novel can explore serious themes and ask serious questions of its readers while also being a bit silly and stupid, because like suffering, silliness and stupidity is an intrinsic part of the human experience.
'The Left Hand of Darkness' by Ursula Le Guin. I could really just say, "All of Ursula Le Guin's stuff" because I've read several novels, a ton of her short stories, plus most of her essay collections and I've loved them all, but I wanted to mention this one particularly because Le Guin was examining our ideas of gender and society in the fucking 60s and I'm tired of hearing right-wing nutjobs bang on about trans people like they're some alien species newly landed on our planet to kidnap our children. Also, what I love about Le Guin's sci-fi is that she was concerned primarily with the culture of alien societies, not laser guns, and her world building is incredibly deep in that regard. Her father was an anthropologist, and you can see how his studies shaped her writing.
'The Lymond Chronicles' by Dorothy Dunnett. I love me a good swashbuckler, and these are some good swashbucklers. There's also some really beautiful prose that really evokes the landscapes of 15th century Europe, and her action/battle scenes are some of the most gripping I've read. The caveat with this one is that I actually don't like the main character all that much; he's a real special guy who speaks all the languages, is good at all the things, is a master strategist at 20, and is hot to boot. But the story is told mostly through the POVs of other characters that get caught up in his exploits so you're not stuck in his insufferable perspective, and I found the books overall (there are six in the series) very hard to put down.
'The Count of Monte Cristo' by Alexandre Dumas. The OG swashbuckler, really. Shipwrecks! Duels! Poison! Revenge! People just don't do dramatic adventure novels like Dumas anymore.
'War and Peace' by Tolstoy. I can't not mention this; I've read it twice so far in English and once in Russian. Tolstoy was an amazing observer of human nature. Also, he clearly thought Napoleon was a little bitch and reading about him from the perspective of a Russian novelist is quite entertaining after reading about him from Victor Hugo's perspective.
'Les Miserables' by Victor Hugo. I also have to mention this one. Yes, there are very lengthy asides on the Parisian sewer system. In the middle of a chase scene. But tbh, Hugo was curious about everything and while maybe he talked about every single one of those things a bit too long, it still endears him to me. Also, he was known more as a poet than a novelist by contemporary readers, and even in translation I think the fact that he was a poet really comes through in the prose.
Also, really anything by Patricia McKillip if you want dreamy, poetic fantasy that feels like being dropped right into the middle of a fairytale where magic has no hard rules and is something a bit wild and dangerous and beautiful.
I also read a lot of non-fiction, so I'll just list a few of my faves: 'Survival in Auschwitz' by Primo Levi; 'The Gulag Archipelago' by Alexandre Solzhenitsyn; James Herriott's 'All Creatures Great and Small' series; 'Landmarks' by Robert Macfarlane (but really any of his nature writing; this one I liked particularly because it's about the power of language to evoke a sense of place and how our vocabulary for the natural world is slowly being subsumed by our increasingly technologically-driven world). 'The Demon-Haunted World' by Carl Sagan, which was written in the 90s but if anything is even more relevant today as we struggle with parsing the mythology of pseudoscience and the real-world harm it perpetuates.
And I read a fuck ton of poetry, so I'll just rattle off a list of some of my favourite poets: Wilfred Owen, Isaac Rosenberg, Siegfried Sassoon, Rupert Brooks, Edward Thomas (I also love his nature writing), Alexandre Blok, Pushkin, Ursula Le Guin (she's primarily known as a novelist, but she has some very good poetry as well), Mikhail Lermontov, Anna Akhmatova, Alexander Pope, Tennyson (particularly Idylls of the King), Seamus Heaney, and Yeats.
Anyway, this is a small sampler of books I've read and loved.

2023 Writing Retrospective
That time of, hehe, New Year again folks, to contemplate over the rollercoaster event that was my writing journey of 2023!
I'm surprised by how much I did end up writing more than anything! And how some projects bloomed larger than I would have previously imagined. I'd like to think I've improved as well, which is inevitable made by practicing of course. I'm happier with how I write, despite knowing it isn't perfect (then again nothing is lol)
Trying the NaNoWriMo for the first time really changed things up in my approach I think, I'd like to try giving myself more of a disciplined approach to writing a little every day, even if it's one word...but I also realized just how tired I felt after November...so a soft middle ground will probably have to be found. I might try to use the website for other projects and set the deadline for far longer than just a month...we'll see!
I am happy that I'm not as disappointed with my own writing as I was with it last year...perhaps that too is a part of my growth as a writer. Could I have written more? Sure, but I've been far more wary of pushing myself and getting burned out last year. I need to remember to pace myself, to be kind, and that sometimes writing is just loafing about and doing other things and projects - and then the next thing you know WHAM 200 words pop in your head!
Anyways let's look at those cold hard numbers!!
2023 Total number of..
User Subscriptions: 17 Kudos: 341 Comment Threads: 61 Bookmarks: 81 Subscriptions: 70 Word Count: 107,804 Hits: 5,054
Top five hits/fics of 2023:
Glow Worms or rather: In the Depths of the Safflower Hills
Cold Green Tea and Colder Feet
Refrigerator Problem
Hand Rolled
Chapped Lips
2024 Goals
Honestly? To keep trying to make each new chapter / fic seem a little better than the last. Keep the progress going, while still remembering to be patient with myself (I'm not very patient with myself ^^;; )
I know I mention this often, but I'd like to attempt writing a multi-chaptered fic in its entirety before posting chapters...just once! Just to see what it is like. We'll see, we'll see... I'm not like in a hurry haha
I'd like to try and finish some of my Discworld Multi-chaptered fics...perhaps I'll use one of them in this theory, just to test it out. I'd love to get a new The Runaway's Gamble chapter out (or finish the fic this year, but I'm being soft with my goals this year) as well as get another Trial Runs and Errors chapter out (perhaps even finish the fic to start working on the next one in the Maurice and Lipwig series of shenanigans and adventures)
We'll see where my attention and heart takes me, cause it'd also be nice to get Glow Worms and Refrigerator Problem done
And yet I have so many other projects I'd like to jump into, like a Serizawa-centric serirei fic, or to finish Chapped Lips
I mean I know there's no rule in having to finish something before starting something else...technically I AM kind of working on them despite not posting anything...perhaps this is a way I could give that "finish the whole fic before posting it" a shot, or at least an attempt haha
I hope my quality continues to improve - but most of all I hope things become a little better.
If 2023 has taught me one thing, it's: let myself be surprised. And you know? I'd like to keep that energy moving forward into 2024
Thank you for reading this far!
I hope 2024 is kinder to us all than the last year, and we all grow and getting a little closer to our goals and dreams and happiness. Who knows where we'll be this time next year, hopefully it'll be a little better than today.
Anywho, stay awesome out there - don't forget to be kind to yourself and others.
And be safe
Best wishes!

20 Questions for Fic Writers
I was tagged by @keirgreeneyes
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
Not counting orphaned or anonymized, 297.
2. What's your total A03 word count?
803,155 words, and that includes co-author input. I've been a short fic, instant satisfaction kinda writer for most of this time.
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Currently trying to finish something for Scum Villain's Self-Saving System, and editing the epic Righteous Blood, Ruthless Blades campaign story with @minutia-r. I get really into a fandom and write a bunch for it, then I get out of the fandom and write whatever + original fiction, then maybe get into a different fandom. You know how it is.
4. What are your top five fics by kudos?
Bonus Material, The Makings of Fate, One Thing or Another, The Upstart King and His Golden Concubine, and Some Sugar for Daddy, all of them Scum Villain. It's definitely the biggest fandom I've written for recently. I used to write Discworld and LotR, which are bigger, but those are mostly not up on AO3 and none are very long.
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
I usually do, especially for smaller fandom fics, not always. But even if I don't, I see and appreciate; I also see and appreciate the kudos. No pressure to comment, y'all.
6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
I have written a fair bit with angsty endings. Maybe The Greyest Timeline (Community); or maybe it just felt angsty, because I wrote it to process my grief over Troy and Abed's separation. Also there may be some I anonymized... but that's my business.
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
What a question. 🤔 I'm not sure I can answer that one. I recognize a lot may have more mixed endings, but there are too many to think through.
8. Do you get hate on fics?
Rarely. I can't remember an incident right now.
9. Do you write smut?
Yeah.
10. Do you write crossovers?
Not as a rule. My favourite of the few currently up is The Last Florentian, a crossover between Poirot and Jeeves & Wooster, in which Lady Florence and Miss Lemon fall in love.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not to my knowledge.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Yes! Sometimes ones I really didn't think deserved it, but it's not up to me, is it? I always give permission.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Hehe yeah, the Lin Moniao series, which grew out of TTRPG.
14. What's your all-time favourite ship?
Pass!
15. What's the WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
Original works. My 60s LA gumshoe novel, the superhero comedy that in retrospect is probably not as funny as I thought it was.
16. What are your writing strengths?
🤔 Side characters with interiority. Ability to keep an entire world in my head, and invent on the spot. Flexibility. Sense of the shape of a story. Not getting too hung up on whether what I produce is popular (so I don't write stuff I don't care about just for the clicks, or get distressed if I get none).
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Losing motivation in the middle of writing longer fic. Underthinking. Messy. Unable to edit effectively due to having lost interest. Self-indulgent ficlets that are more me speaking my thoughts out than anything designed for an audience. Piling my plate too high when I get excited for challenges. Occasionally I have to take a break in the Pit of Despair.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
Usually not necessary. Fine if you like it.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Not entirely sure. It was either Dragonlance or Ranma 1/2. Neither will be on AO3.
20. Favourite fic you've ever written?
If the Lin Moniao series counts as a fic, then it's the Lin Moniao series.
Has everybody been tagged? tagging uhhh @minutia-r

9th doctor
:DD thanks cath!!
how i feel about this character -
tbh i don't have quite as many super strong opinions on nine, i think cos we don't see him for quite as long, but i still really really like him hehe. he's often portrayed as the grumpy one which isn't exactly inaccurate but also i feel like he gets a bad rap for just not being as immediately likeable yknow? even though he does still laugh & joke around he's far less emotionally vulnerable & quick to get to 'you humans are all stupid', even in his first episode, although some of this is probably a self-defence, having literally just destroyed gallifrey which is, yknow, a massively traumatic thing to happen, & he hasn't had a companion for a bit, & in any case is just a bit more sarcastic than other regenerations. but also you know that feels deeply he just tries to cover it up. but also truly no one is doing it like the ninth doctor, some of the stuff he does (telling a dalek to kill itself) like ten wouldn't say that unless he was really at the end his tether yknow? but also the absolute joy at the end of the doctor dances!! 'every body lives rose! just this once everybody lives!!' and telling the kid 'pop music in 20 years you're gonna love it!' and his smile is so fun hehe he really does just :D & he has some really wonderful funny bits as well hehe. also he has THEE BEST leather jacket
all the people i ship romantically with this character -
imo all the nuwho doctors are some variation on aroace & i really Really don't see him in a romantic relationship with rose (or jack. though the would be a little bit fun hehe) but i feel like nine is the kind of person who, had he been allowed more time in that regeneration would slowly start to feel both romantic & sexual attraction. just that in the situation he's in, The Horrors are kind of more immediate things to deal with. like he just doesn't have time for that. also he probably thinks that anyone who gets to close to him will die horribly which is why he's a bit brusque. but yeah if he'd been allowed more chill time without the Horrors & time to process Everything he would be gradually more accepting of his own attraction to people and willing to do something about that. just where he's at he simply doesn't feel attraction & it doesn't even cross his mind that that's an option.
non-romantic otp for this character -
Rose. yes their weird qpr-situationship has it's issues ('i feel awful about my planet being destroyed, to show off on out first playdate i'm gonna take you to see your planet being destroyed') they just work well together hehe. BUT he would be Excellent with donna noble methinks OUGH if only they got to meet. the sarcasm would be tangible
unpopular opinion about this character -
idk really know what the popular opinions of nine are but. he could have been a bit nicer about having accidentally dropped rose off a year late. just a little.
one thing i wish had happened with this character -
honestly i wish we'd got more time to see him develop. like even one special would have been nice. one! just one! i feel like we leave him behind too quickly. it would have been nice to see him & rose do something chill together & not have to worry about dying or the planet dying.
my otp -
idk?? like probably rose but if we're talking romantically i don't think that would really work. idk why it just doesn't.
crossover ship (platonically) -
does it count as a crossover if it's a dr who character from later?? cos like i think he would get on really well with donna noble hehe. but from an actual different thing - nanny ogg & granny weatherwax from discworld, i can just picture the three of them sitting down drinking tea & bitching about some stupid supernatural/alien entity that tried to disrupt their day AGAIN yknow?
headcanon for them -
i think nine would like old arcade videogames. & he'd make a point of maxxing them out so some little kid would be astounded by his prowess at pacman or something. & he'd get mad when he lost as well. idk i can just picture him yelling at an old video game hehe
#thanks for the ask!!!#dr who#ninth doctor#i do really like nine hehe i just wish he got more developmentttttttt

hello please sorry if you've answered this a billion times - is the quote on your blog from a discworld book and if so, which one? I feel like I've only recently read it but the more I think on it the less I'm sure I'm not retroactively making that memory hehe
It is discworld but! It's from a short story!
It's from Theatre of Cruelty- I have the copy in A Blink Of The Screen (collection of his short fiction) But! I also have a link to a very very cool illustrated comic of the story that I dug up for you
#poisonhemloc's rambles#also no i don't get the question like this a lot! usually i get it over discord cause it's almost always my status over there

- Order of The Stick (ongoing)
the order of the stick is one of my all-time favorites! it began as a gag-a-day parody of d&d and the fantasy genre in general, but has evolved into a genuine epic with a fascinating story, a memorable cast of characters, and still plenty of comedy. if you've ever enjoyed fantasy or dnd: you'll enjoy this. i suggest reading to about 100 pages before you decide whether or not you like it!
- Sleepless Domain (ongoing)
sleepless domain is a thrilling tale of magical girls in a society threatened by monsters. it's full of dark twists, charming characters, and exciting action! this is no madoka magicka ripoff, though: instead of angst centering around corruption, sleepless domain offers a fascinating and nuanced take on magical girls as child soldiers - with all the sparkles the genre requires. for this one i'd suggest reading up to chapter 2 or so before deciding what you think of it!
- The Glass Scientists (ongoing)
the glass scientists is a charming, gaslamp-fantasy take on assorted victorian mad scientists - as well as the concept of a mad scientist - in a series full of wit and drama. especially fascinating is the look at jekyll and hyde, not as good and evil halves of a person, but as a metaphor for repression (and even staying in the closet)!
- xkcd (ongoing)
xkcd is a fun, nerdy comic that, unlike the others of this list, is purely comedic rather than story-based! penned by former nasa engineer and bestselling author randall munroe, xkcd is a delightful romp through all things geeky- and i can guarantee you've almost certainly seen an xkcd strip floating around the internet before, recognizable by its distinctly stylized stick figures or silly graphs. simply hitting "random" and reading through one comic after another is an excellent way to kill time!
(there exists a wiki called "explain xkcd" that exists purely to clarify any especially obscure references or explain whatever scientific concept a given strip alludes to - i think that really says something about the sort of comic that xkcd is!)
- Val and Isaac (ongoing)
val and isaac, from tumblr's very own @/tredlocity, is a wonderful sci-fi series that's often simple one-off gags but occasionally has more intense story arcs! the characters (mostly bounty hunters) are charming and unique, the jokes are hilarious, and isaac specifically is one of my favorite ever interpretations of a wizard.
- Cocksley & Catapult (ongoing)
C&C, the sitcom-style gag-a-day comic about two besties with an impossible to describe dynamic, never fails to entertain. it's perhaps the most distinctly tumblr webcomic you'll find anywhere, whatever that means to you. perhaps the easiest way to describe it - the truest to the comic way to describe it - is "really funny in a mental illness kind of way." i love it.
hope this list is helpful to someone! let me know if you check out any of these comics, and what you think of them :D
and ESPECIALLY get in touch if you already like any of these comics.... i need someone to yell with about them

soft magic systems vs. hard magic systems
intro
magic systems! they’re a defining trait of the fantasy genre- but what are the differences between hard magic systems and soft magic systems? s there a grey area? which one does your wip use?
read on to find out :)
hard
the terms “hard” magic and “soft” magic were popularised by brandon sanderson, author of the mistborn trilogy, the stormlight archive, and many more! with that out of the way, let's get into hard magic systems.
broadly speaking, hard magic systems have strict rules and limitations, often with consequences for using magic — the reader will know exactly how the magic works. examples of hard magic systems include brandon sanderson’s mistborn (each metal has it’s own abilities), avatar: the last airbender (bending has many rules, e.g. a bender can only bend one element, except for the avatar), etc.
–
soft
soft magic, on the other hand, is the opposite of hard magic. they don’t have any set rules (and if they do, they aren’t explained to the reader). the magic is mysterious, and can often go wrong. it can be used to better weave in themes, convey a sense of wonder, etc. however, it can very easily kill stakes.
examples of this include the discworld series (magic is very unpredictable, can often backfire) by terry pratchett, harry potter (while most wizards need wands, we don’t know how many spells there are) by jk rowling, and star wars (the force can do anything, and you can even introduce never-seen-before things that make no sense 😭).
–
grey area?
magic systems aren’t really strictly defined into those two sides: there is usually grey area. it’s more of a spectrum, with hard magic on one side and soft magic on the other. for example, avatar the last airbender sometimes breaks its own rules, and never explicitly defines it; in star wars there is (usually) a defined set of powers the characters can use.
–
what do I use?
people often say that hard magic builds tension and prevents deus ex machinas. for example, if a character suddenly gained a power that we haven’t seen before for no reason at the climax of the story, and uses said power to immediately defeat the antagonist— it kills all the tension in the story and leaves the reader feeling unsatisfied.
however, soft magic systems also have their perks! their undefined nature can create more mysticism and whimsy for the reader (hence why they’re especially popular in middle-grade books)
I have a lot to say about magic systems, so we might make more posts abt it in the future hehe 😁😁 that’s all from me for now! until next time 👋 — celeste
p.s. my wip leans more towards hard magic!

HI I CAN'T TYPE ALL THAT MUCH TILL IM ON My LAPTOP BUT im taking ur invitation because i have so much to say about discworld always. follow-up questions r MORE than appreciated
the basics:
-Discworld is a book series by Terry Pratchett. there's nearly 40 books, but! they're only a series because they all take place in the same world. most books follow different casts of characters and if multiple books follow the same character/couple characters then that's considered a subseries. so. like. if, out of ten books, three of them all follow Death's misadventures, then those are often bundled together as it's own "series" even if they don't take place one after another. this means most people, when reading, don't start with the first book- the first book, the color of magic, is good! but terry pratchett was writing for a pretty long time and improved over the years a lot, and by comparison to the other books, the first one's not a particularly strong introduction.
-the discworld itself is, well, a disc! this fantasy world sits on the backs of four massive elephants which sit on the back of an even bigger turtle that swims through space. it runs more on "what feels right" rather than silly things like "physics". the light that dawns over it is slow and sluggish and takes it's goddamn time.
-the series is, overall, mostly whimsical! however, just about every book also packs some hard-hitting emotional punches and "oh my god. humanity is inherently good after all."
-there's a city in the discworld called Ankh-Morpork. it's awful, it's wonderful, it's fantasy new york, it smells bad, a guy died in a condom factory there, when people try to invade they just get welcomed in and invited to buy things. sometimes robbed.
-Ankh-Morpork is ran by a man named Vetinari. he's a despotic tyrant, ruling the city with an iron fist, a machiavellian genius- and entirely benevolent. he has all the aesthetics of being evil, he intimidates the hell out of people, but ultimately he wants what's best for the people of the city- and if that means being extremely evil-presenting, well, he already likes the aesthetics!
-oh and also crime rates in this city are ridiculous. when vetinari came into power he made thieving legal as long as you have a license with the guild and pay your dues. same with assassination. actually all the ankh-morpork guilds are silly! discworld is too genuine amd heartfelt/emotional for me to really think of it as a parody but also it does parody pretty much every fantasy trope ever, including the counsel of guilds. the fools' guild (clowns) is good i like it (not just for name reasons hehe). thieves guild was actually a massive-brain move rather than a ridiculous whim though. something about how the city watch has to double their efforts to even dent the crime rates but the thief just has to work less hard.
-also. things can come into existence and be shaped by belief. the anthropomorphization of Death made him a grim reaper instead of merely a natural process and holy shit he's awesome
WITH THIS IN MIND i'll start on some of my favorite "starting places" for discworld!! no rly major spoilers so if at any point you or someone readin this wants to get into em it won't be Given Away (though imo even knowing what happens in a discworld book its still enjoyable-) (ALSO I WOULD KILL AND DIE FOR ANYONE PROMPTED BY THIS TO READ IT-)
-Mort
Mort! this was my introduction. the eponymous main character, mort, is a scrawny teenage boy who's no good at anything and while his father loves him, mort is more a hindrance than help around the farm. so he is set out to be apprenticed and learn a trade! however, nobody wants to hire him.... except. death! the grim reaper materializes and offers him an apprenticeship. he agrees, bewildered, and things just get crazier from there. how can a book NOT be excellent if one of the main characters is a seven-foot-tall skeleton? hm?
-guards! guards!
hehe this one's the start of the City Watch series. this one follows a Carrot Ironfoundersson, a human raised by dwarves
a very tall dwarf. he takes things extremely literally and does his best to help people wherever he can. however! he is too tall to fit in the mine. he is sent out to seek his fortune in the ankh-morpork city watch. (also, it's highly implied that he is the Destined King, Fated To Rule but like. he'd rather be just a guy.)
the city watch is, he finds, in shambles. there are three other members. one of which includes sam vimes (who is the main character in all subsequent City Watch books), an alcoholic depressed bastard who doesn't really do his job (and he's still the most responsible). but he does survive, and that takes a lot of effort.
as crime chilled out with the various guilds, the watch had less and less funding over the years. it's pretty much become defunct! the events of this book pretty much built it up again, more or less from the ground up.
worth nothing that while the city watch are technically cops, as well as Moral, this is pretty much the opposite of copaganda? even the later books of the watch. it's very much an exploration of why cops are bad, as contrasted to, well, the alternative. it's hard to explain but! it's very good.
-going postal
this one's a personal favorite!! going postal follows the story of an (ex-)conman. he's put to death under a false name, has his death faked for him, and... hired as a government worker. put in charge of the postal system, specifically! so now he has Responsibility and it's either that or die.
this conman then eventually cons himself into being a good person, through the power of hubris, a gold-sequined suit, and falling head-over-heels in love with perhaps the scariest woman in the city.
oh, also his name is Moist von Lipwig.
ANYWAYS I RLY LOVE THE DISCWORLD NOVELS N ALL THIS BARELY SCRATCHED THE SURFACE I'VE BEEN TYPING THIS ON N OFF SINCE SECOND PERIOD please ask any follow-up questions you have literally i could talk about this for hours im just bad at "uhh what part to cover next" and there r other places to start that r recommended but these 3 are my go-to
ily heartie !!! also please please tell me the ask didn't get cut off pls
Holy shit, seeing the discworld stuff you rb has always interested me but I didnt know there was this much!!! I can't think of any questions rn as my brain is unfortunately mush but uhm. Moist. That is his name. He is called moist?
#gamer txt.#i dont know how much there is to say but i would like to hear more about the fools guild#ily2 !! thank you sm for sendinf this to me s' fucking delightful to read!#caps tw

this is the gentleman jack anon from a bit ago, sorry I dunno why it was anon last time lol- in terms of ur fics reminding me of the show I think it's mainly due to
1) historical queerness - I kno technically most of ur stuff is fantasy but it's basically the same - Annes (eponymous gentleman jack) mascultinity n attire is very reminiscent in vibe of ur discworld fics in my opinion
2) Anne in general really reminds me of Downey bc it's mentioned she had a reputation for gambling / hanging out with soldiers and being rambunctious in her youth but now she's a very mature character and a lot of the plot focuses on her business and landownership deals similar to Downey and running the assassin's guild. also shes really invested in maintaining the status of shibden hall, her historical home which is very similar to Downey's taste for traditionalism and grandeur. Also as characters they're both very into dignity/ courtesy/ 'doing the done thing'
3) theres also scheming and drama and illness which vaguely reminds me of the Sicily plot in thus always
4) Anne's actually a proper nerd aswell and loves to mention her time studying anatomy / art / blah blah in Paris which echoes William 'poisonous plants' Downey n Vetinari the og big nerd
5) also just older queer people which u don't often see in fic n stuff- Anne is in her 40s in the series
anyway that's just a few things that came to mind I could probably write an essay on it but I would defo reccomend u watch it I think it's right up ur lane 💓 (Soz for how long this got hehe)
<3 helloooo
1) Historical queerness - I do borrow a *tonne* from early modern and late-early modern queerness for Discworld stuff, and Downey in particular (see: Downey’s hats & Florentine mlm and their hats) - and I mean discworld as TP wrote it has no consistency in clothes so there is the late-early modern and early victorian (e.g. Moist & Adora) mixed in with late medieval and early modern (e.g. Vetinari) - I do tend towards the early modern myself because medieval and victorian is overdone
2) ahhh that is delightful! she is clearly living her best life. But I do appreciate a good #Growth experience with characters - yet ones who never lose their joie de vivre. So, still have a love and lust for life, but you know, also have maturity, responsibility and a sense that there are Consequences for Thine Own Actions. Which us something you rarely see in characters? It tends to be Rake/Louche Living v. Stodge/Do What is Right rather than a more normal mix of someone who once ran wild who learned there are consequences and has appropriately tempered themselves. So they’re still be a mad lad when they want to be but also pay the bills on time and have descent life advice and make good relationship decisions.
3) ooooooo! this interests me greatly! anyone get suspiciously pushed down some stairs?
4) <3 <3 ah this Delights me. Downey: Have you heard of this rare mushroom? Vetinari: Have you heard of this super niche linguist? Downey: I love you so much you dumb nerd. Vetinari: takes one to know one. Downey: I will have you know I’m one of the cool kids. Vetinari: mmmk honey. Only because no one knows about your secret sordid plant nerd ways.
5) YES. OK I LOVE OLD QUEERS. I love them so much. Mostly because i am a 75 year old man at heart. But yes I love old queers and i just - always want more of them. all of them living their best lives. doing what they need to do. just out their. being gay. ugh - be still my beating heart.
--
well! it’s still on my to-watch list and that has been a great booster of it up the list! so good work! 💓 💓
in cute things; my mom has watched it in an attempt to better understand me since I apparently remind her of the Anne character and she was very excited when she finished it and told me all about it and I was like “thank u you’re great” then she bought me men’s boots.
so you know, happy 2021 everyone.
#my mother unlike downey's father actually Tries#queer shit#lord downey#we stan one (1) queer downey#ask#reply#discworld
