Why I love Captain Barnacles

Captain Barnacles was really quick for me to fall in love with. despite watching it as a kid, I actually rediscovered Octonauts through Athena P (please watch her videos on YT she’s great) with the way she talked about Captain Barnacles being a great leader and always looking out for his crew I couldn’t not fall for him. And then I watched some clips, I started liking him, understanding what Athena was talking about, then I watched Sac Actun and my love for him solidified I knew he was the type of character I ADORE

Captain Barnacles is a genuine and compassionate leader. He puts his crew and the creatures they protect above himself at all times, takes so many tasks and often reaches out to help others, And he even offers a helping paw, whether it’s to pull someone out of harms way, or just for the sake of comforting someone else. The Captain puts his own troubles aside, constantly. whether it’s a dangerous situation he’s stuck in, or his deep rooted fear.

Some smaller things I like about Captain Banracles is the way he presents himself as someone who means zero harm, but also someone you should listen to if you’re looking for help or safety, he never grows impatient, he never tells someone to do something because he’s the Captain, but because he wants them to be safe, he listens when someone has an idea, he goes along with Kwazii’s bizarre tales, nor does he invalidate Peso’s fears.

I also really love his voice, given to us By Simon Greenall, and his Creature report singing voice by Ross Breen (he has a Spotify GO LISTEN!!) Barnacles sometimes comforts smaller creatures by holding them or kneeling to their level and it’s always the SWEETEST

going to sleep but josh o’connor is so aware of his body that he doesn’t look like josh o’connor in his roles. especially as patrick like there’s only maybe a handful of times where patrick looks like josh and that’s just bc they have the same face. but the gestures aren’t the same. the body language isn’t the same. the facial expressions certainly aren’t the same.

Neil seeing his true face for the first time sends him off the deep end and wymack does the only thing he can think of, the only thing he’s ever seen Neil take for comfort and lights a cigarette and gives it to him and it fucking works!! It’s enough to keep him anchored. The thought wymack has to have put in to see that this is something that allows him comfort when Neil hides everything he’s feeling so deeply and to remember it here when Neil’s in crisis is so important!!
