in say don't go she says "i said i love you, you say nothing back", and in cruel summer she says "i love you, ain't that the worst thing you ever heard? (he looks up grinning like a devil)"

both bridges say the exact same thing, just in different manners.

some people interpret "(he looks up grinning like a devil)" as him loving her back, but I personally think it would make more sense that he's playing her. cruel summer is a song about putting more effort into a relationship than the other person is, and pretending it's cool (that's what I tell 'em)

the vaults are a really interesting bonus of the re-recordings, because we get to see the cutting room floor, and how that improves the songs that come after.

in short, i think cruel summer wouldn't have hit as hard if say don't go wasn't cut from 1989
