You know what, I'm going to add to this after all. Ray tracing is a gimmick and infamous for how intensive it is on hardware where it updates in real time, such as in video games. Before it was considered at all feasible outside rendering CGI, there were other methods of simulating light that were far easier for hardware to handle and, honestly, the difference between them (I can't remember what the name of the algorithm is) and ray tracing is minimal.
Adding to the problem is video card manufacturers pushing it while not increasing the VRAM on cards that are now expected to handle ray tracing, NPC scripts/AI, all other graphics, and stream encoding at the same time. GPUs have not seen a meaningful increase in VRAM in years despite the push of 4k graphics and ray tracing.
Oh and handling generating in-between frames to increase FPS/hide poor optimisation and up-scaling from 1080p to 4k or 8k. Sometimes both at the same time (in addition to the rest).
Further compounding it is consoles using stripped down versions of GPUs but not allowing users to upgrade them or other hardware. At least not in an easy way that doesn't void the warranty.
There's only so much that can be off-loaded to other components and it is a Choice™ to decide not to include an option to disable features that minimally improve the graphics (I specify graphics since more than one game has been released where turning off ray tracing wasn't the first thing recommended to turn off if you wanted to hit 30+ FPS) but can and do overwhelm GPUs.
Mandatory Ray Tracing should be banned in games. Genuinely absurd to think the majority of consumers are running high performing RTX graphics cards.
#i have a suspicion that this plus the price increase in gpus is to push people to rent computers a la geforce now#and gpus are one of the main ways developers compensate for having dog shit optimisation#the others being (hoping) the end user has enough ram to hide memory leaks#and high hdd/ssd capacity so compression doesn't need to be optimised#(also a high or no data cap since so much is downloaded rather than coming on a physical disk)#some developers are better at having granular options than others too#some will let you tweak or disable damn near everything so it runs best on your system and so you can choose what looks good to you#while others do the bare minimum and can't even be bothered to let users change things like particle effects or ray tracing#your options are basically play how the developer decided (regardless of your system) or not play at all#if the game runs fine until x or y or z but then starts to stutter/crash and would be fine if you could turn things down/disable things#you're sol if the developer didn't bother to allow changes outside of gamma and anti-aliasing for example#also not everyone has a 4k display or notices minute details#some people don't even see a difference between 30 fps and 60#don't get me started on how so many developers treat colour blindness as something spiteful rather than a medical condition#but more and more developers are forcing large and/or intense graphics/textures rather than giving users (aka customers) an option#or having a separate additional download if someone does want 4k or 8k textures#you know the way so many games operated when <720p displays were common but there was a way to download hd textures#for people who wanted them *and* had a display that could do 1080p#though it goes back to the (usually) aaa publishers and how graphic generations hit their peak a while ago#adding more polygons isn't something big or noticeable anymore unless it results in a performance *drop*#(the team fortress 2 snake immediately comes to mind)#(or the final fantasy 14 grapes)#ray tracing is one of the buzzwords used to sell a remaster (possibly to people who bought the game before)#or indicate a game/console is new and not part of a previous generation

Good things that happened today:
Just straight up shut my brain off for a whole day, and it was good for me.
Watched randomized episodes of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles from the five current animated shows. Still love this franchise to death.
Watched a hilarious compilation that made me laugh so hard.
Watched HD clips of Deadpool and Wolverine now that an HD version of the movie is now readily available for the general public (Good for us)
Good things about me:
I have good ideas for characters
I have a good taste in media
I'm a relatively fair reviewer, for the most part. I'm at least not a pretentious contrarian who refuses to accept people can like the things I don't. So, that's a plus.
I have decent media analysis, taking a scene and seeing the symbolism that's potentially on display.
I am not a bad person. I'm not a good person. I'm just a person doing his best.

i have a 600 person queue to chew through, so let's make another post.
i'm level 95 and have finished the third solo instance, plus a few quests after it (but not that far.)
this expansion feels very political in a way that's different from the previous expacs. ff14 doesn't really hide its politics and never has; it's always been a story about the power of friendship overcoming the most terrible of foes. and in that respect, it's very simple and straightforward. a little basic, maybe, but the core theme of "you should actually listen to what other people want" is very honest and true to itself.
wuk lamat wants peace. and peace is a wonderful thing to want, but what does it actually mean? it means looking at how your society is set up. it means looking at who has advantages, and who doesn't, and why that is. and then when you find out, you have to do something about it. a truly egalitarian society is a pipe dream, but it's the thought that counts.
that doesn't mean it's not worth trying. and even if you fail, you'll have learned valuable lessons in the attempt. this, too, is a constant refrain of ff14: you have to try, even if it's hard, even if you're not sure you're going to succeed. you have to put in the effort.
it's interesting how the claimants each display different parts of this struggle. koana's lust for innovation is all well and good, but there's no depth to it. bakool ja ja wants power for the sake of power, to justify but not right past wrongs. zoraal ja — well, i suspect we'll be getting more into him soon. i do not think he will accept defeat so easily.
and wuk lamat is so clearly meant to be the victor. this entire setup is perfect for her, and while she's plainly struggled along the path, she's still tried. she's given it her all, and she hasn't backed down even when it's tough. it's admirable, i think.
on the whole, i'm really liking this expansion! it feels very reminiscent of stormblood, in that the warrior of light is kind of just There and not particularly integral to the actual story. but after all the drama of the past two expacs this is nothing short of a relief. god knows we needed a rest.
some misc thoughts:
how the fuck is kenteramm still alive, lmao. i stopped msq right before going to his house (sidequests spawned and i had to do them) so i guess?? we'll find out?? most HD roegadyn i've ever seen tho, damn
i can Feel a twist looming. with the rite of succession nearing its end, there's gotta be something beyond "search for the city of gold" to carry us five more levels.
on a gameplay note, i have no idea when to use vice of thorns. it seems as though i have the freedom to use it whenever, which is nice, but i like a slightly more rigid burst window... i suppose i'll just use it after party buffs go out. other red mage changes are v good so far.
i did a leveling queue as summoner this morning to try and keep pace with red mage and lucked into the level 93 dungeon (the top one i could do, nice). these dps queues tho. killer. (i'd comment on summoner changes but l o l)
THE VALIGARMANDA TRIAL WAS FANTASTIC. i did it in trust (what a surprise! i never thought they'd do a trust trial again) and died when the boss was at like 12% health because....... i was trying to RDM LB3 and the avalanche got me and none of the NPCs broke me out of the snowball. THANKS A LOT, ASSHOLES. went fine the second time though.
as a red mage main, alisaie as your trust healer is fucking hilarious.
this goes without saying but the game looks so beautiful, goddamn.
i still have 83 in queue but i've run out of things to say. LET ME IN

Part of me wonders if there has ever been a body paint and tails only rendition of the play
That is definitely an interesting premise. A body paint and tails edition is a fantasy for sure, and I can say with certainty that it has never happened. Further, it will never happen - at least not in any official capacity. There is a potential that someone somewhere at sometime has donned body paint to make them look like any given character from the musical as a joke or as an earnest attempt to replicate them, and that would be the beginning and end of that. Nevertheless, it is intriguing to say that least to imagine it. It is one hell of a sexy (private) cosplay for fans too if they were daring enough.
To me, the show would have to be exactly the same aside from the change in proverbial costume (or lack there of). Wigs and make-up would be a must still, and I would require the bodypaint to be professionally done and in the exact same pattern as the 'regular' unitards too, so that is another thing. All of the characters and dancing remain as intended, but obviously with much more to visually appreciate. I say this with tact, but my god can you imagine how awesome that would be?
Simply picture them dancing and all of that, or the high kicks they do, or them crawling on all fours - especially from behind (that would be my favourite), or even the entirety of the white cat solo which would be just spectacular. Beyond the feast for the eyes, it would expand on how much athleticism goes into the show with legs (amongst other things) on full display. This includes female and male actors, even though I would be so tunnel-visioned looking at certain actors the Rumple to notice any tom for very long in all honesty.
Though, I do have to say that my fetishism with clothing / costumes would be a bit sad to strip away the unitards. They are already more than good enough to show off every fanatstic curve, and it adds a bit of spice to have that sort of clothing worn in all honesty. The entire package is what makes them a life-changing point of focus for me.
Anyway, not to ruin any enthusiasm, but much of the undergarments / padding the male and female cast wear beneath their unitards are meant to reduce any injuries and ensure comfort, so a body paint show is not feasible. 'Sportswear' so to speak ensures things stay where they should be without flip-flopping around. For example, I am sure you can appreciate that certain curious cat hip thrusts would be in a mega-HD 3D type shit without such support. Beyond this, each cat also wears kneepads underneath to protect their knees after a night of crawling and sliding as well.
A body paint show would be terribly impractical too given how long it would take every single time they would perform. I am not well versed at all in how long it takes to apply, but it has to be a lengthy proces. Plus, what about the song costumes? Those are important too. Another point would be that making everyone nude would be a distraction from the rest of show and reduce its impact, but that is obviously subjective. Even the thought of making the show more unduly sexual in whatever capacity creates a challenge.
Either way, good thought in the end. Lots of good visuals with your idea.
#not going to lie i would probably pay handsomely to see a 'nude' performance of Cats but in the end a traditional one is pretty damn close#especially with how perfectly show-y the skintight costumes are#I still dream of certain actors after seeing them live in costume - it was pretty damn great#plus i am a fan of the show first and a thirsty guy second (most days)

My main gripe with Origins (aside from the state of Sonic 3 which I believe was patched only a whole year later, yikes) is the same that I have with all collections of pixel based games: the lack of any quality crt filters to blend the pixels in a natural way and to recreate transparency effects like the ones of the waterfalls in the Genesis games.
I know that most people have no issue with this since they like their pixels nice and sharp but these games were never meant to be displayed on modern TVs with HD resolutions so the ultra pixelated look we see and are accustomed to is actually not really the way they are supposed to look like
(aside from the state of Sonic 3 which I believe was patched only a whole year later, yikes)
Haven't played Sonic 3 on Origins yet; was it bad? I think I vaguely remember some issues wrt the soundtrack?
As a tangential aside, while Sonic 3 is infamously buggy, tbf most of the Classics have their fair share of bugs that have persisted across most ports. I noticed they ironed out a bug in Sonic 1 where Sonic jumps with a walking animation if you jump near certain objects in Green Hill and Marble Zone. They also fixed the bug in the Chemical Plant boss where you can bypass getting hurt by Eggman dropping Mega Mack on you by ducking. It now hurts you regardless of whether you duck. The fixes disappointed me a little bit, as a matter of fact, as those are bugs that I actually enjoy seeing lol. While polish is necessary to make a game playable, sometimes too much sands off the rough edges and idiosyncrasies you come to love in a game.

Yeah, I know what you mean. It would have been nice to have some sort of CRT filter. Actually, this is why I keep a huge CRT in my bedroom, specifically for playing old games and watching old movies. SA2 DC and Paper Mario TTYD wouldn't look as good on a smart TV, and playing those games for too long may damage the flatscreen. (Plus, it can play VHS, DVDs, and has a headphone jack. Old TV or not, I love it <3) Some compilations do fancy tricks to try and circumvent the problem, but the fact of the matter remains that games of this era were designed for the technology of their time. It's not going to look as good in crisp HD when the resolution is supposed to be at least a little bit hazy and impressionistic in order to make your brain blend the colors together. I think Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection had options to filter the pixels and "smooth" them over, but that just swung in the opposite direction of making everything look too simplified:
This looks more like painting than pixel art. I want to be able to tell that it's pixel art without it being too sharp or too smooth.

Ever wondered what the datasets used to train AI look like? This video is a subset of ImageNet-1k (18k images) with some other metrics.
Read more on how I made it and see some extra visualizations.
Okay! I'll split this up by the elements in the video, but first I need to add some context about
The dataset
ImageNet-1k (aka ILSVRC 2012) is an image classification dataset - you have a set number of classes (in this case 1000) and each class has a set of images. This is the most popular version of ImageNet, which usually has 21000 classes.
ImageNet was made using nouns from WordNet, searched online. From 2010 to 2017 yearly competitions were held to determine the best image classification model. It has greatly benefitted computer vision, developing model architectures that you've likely used unknowingly. See the accuracy progression here.
ResNet
Residual Network (or ResNet) is an architecture for image recognition made in 2015, trying to fix "vanishing/exploding gradients" (read the paper here). It managed to achieve an accuracy of 96.43% (that's 96 thousand times better than randomly guessing!), winning first place back in 2015. I'll be using a smaller version of this model (ResNet-50), boasting an accuracy of 95%.
The scatter plot
If you look at the video long enough, you'll realize that similar images (eg. dogs, types of food) will be closer together than unrelated ones. This is achieved using two things: image embeddings and dimensionality reduction.
Image embeddings
In short, image embeddings are points in an n-dimensional space (read this post for more info on higher dimensions), in this case, made from chopping off the last layer from ResNet-50, producing a point in 1024-dimensional space.
The benefit of doing all of that than just comparing pixels between two images is that the model (specifically made for classification) only looks for features that would make the classification easier (preserving semantic information). For instance - you have 3 images of dogs, two of them are the same breed, but the first one looks more similar to the other one (eg. matching background). If you compare the pixels, the first and third images would be closer, but if you use embeddings the first and second ones would be closer because of the matching breeds.
Dimensionality reduction
Now we have all these image embeddings that are grouped by semantic (meaning) similarity and we want to visualize them. But how? You can't possibly display a 1024-dimensional scatter plot to someone and for them to understand it. That's where dimensionality reduction comes into play. In this case, we're reducing 1024 dimensions to 2 using an algorithm called t-SNE. Now the scatter plot will be something we mere mortals can comprehend.
Extra visualizations
Here's the scatter plot in HD:
This idea actually comes from an older project where I did this on a smaller dataset (about 8k images). The results were quite promising! You can see how each of the 8 classes is neatly separated, plus how differences in the subject's angle, surroundings, and color.
Find the full-resolution image here
Similar images
I just compared every point to every other point (in the 2d space, It would be too computationally expensive otherwise) and got the 6 closest points to that. You can see when the model incorrectly classifies something if the related images are not similar to the one presented (eg. there's an image of a payphone but all of the similar images are bridges).
Pixel rarity
This one was pretty simple, I used a script to count the occurrences of pixel colors. Again, this idea comes from an older project, where I counted the entirety of the dataset, so I just used that.
Extra visualization
Here are all the colors that appeared in the image, sorted by popularity, left to right, up to down
Some final stuff
MP means Megapixel (one million pixels) - a 1000x1000 image is one megapixel big (it has one million pixels)
That's all, thanks for reading. Feel free to ask questions and I'll try my best to respond to them.

Sonic Unleashed?
never played | want to play | terrible | boring | okay | good | great | a favorite
Admittedly, as a Sonic fan, I have a lot of bias to what Sonic Unleashed added to the proverbial table, but i feel like even if it was completely and entirely disconnected from the rest of the Sonic canon, it'd STILL be an absolute favorite of mine. It's THAT good of a game.
Let's be real here - This game had no business being released in 2008. Even 15+ years later, the game still looks PHENOMENAL. Hell, I'd argue it looks even BETTER now that we can play it at 60fps with no frame drops! Sonic Unleashed was so ahead of it's time, that it was more powerful than the consoles it was DESIGNED FOR!
From the level design, to the gameplay, to the story, to the mechanics, to the music, to the collectibles, to the animation - THE ANIMATION
Y'ALL
LOOK AT THIS
LOOK AT THE SHINE ON SONIC'S SHOES, THE SMOKE BILLOWING BEHIND THEM, THE FUR ON THE WEREHOG, THE FUR ON THE WEREHOG!
15+ YEARS LATER AND THIS GAME LOOKS BETTER THAN GAMES RELEASING TODAY
Sonic Unleashed is an incredible game and I love everything about it. Yes, even the werehog stages. In fact, ESPECIALLY the werehog stages. Do they have thier faults? Yes, certainly. The stages can sometimes drag on a bit too long, and the sheer amount of forced combat encounters is certainly a baffling decision. But when it came to translating Sonic the Hedgehog into a 3D Beat-Em-Up, I think they nailed it. Plus, it gave the developers time to slow down for a second, and experiment with slower styles of platforming for a change. Even the fastest thing alive needs to stop and smell the roses every now and again.
Truly, charm leaks out of every orifice of Sonic Unleashed, and spews upon your screen in a grand display from the very moment you turn it on. As the origin of the now ubiquitous Boost formula of Sonic games, it somehow manages to immediately do it right, with gigantic, wide levels to accommodate for your speed, even if relying a BIT too much on reaction time. As the first Sonic game in HD, it blows the whole thing out of the goddamn water, the park, the atmosphere, and even the fucking GALAXY, Being so far ahead of it's time that, while still impressive back then, is one of the ONLY games from the 360 generation that still universally looks good today. And as an experience, is truly one of the most refined you can have. Sonic Unleashed is FAR from a bad game, and criticizing it as if it is proves you are a terrible critic who needs to step up your game. Even people who hate the werehog still admit that the daytime stages are fire. Because even if Sonic Unleashed made a few missteps here or there, it is still an amazing game that every Sonic fan, or even 3D Platformer fan, should play!
Uh, in conclusion, Sonic Unleashed good.

These Caught My Eyes for a Minute
JBL never fails with their design factors. Especially this time they killed it with something new from the design aspect.
For its latest Tour Series true wireless earbuds, JBL is taking an interesting approach to the wireless charging case. The Tour Pro 2 comes with what the company calls "the world's first smart charging case," thanks to a 1.45-inch LED touchscreen display on the outside. This panel offers controls for both music and calls in addition to notifications for messages and social apps. The company touts the convenience of not having to look at your phone for said items, but you will have to keep the case within reach.
Aside from the case, the Tour Pro 2 is a set of flagship earbuds. They're equipped with adaptive active noise cancellation (ANC) and ambient sound mode with 10mm drivers, spatial audio and JBL's Pro sound inside. Personi-fi 2.0 allows you to customize the audio profile to suit your listening habit and an ear tip fit test can ensure a proper fit. JBL says you can expect up to eight hours of use with ANC on (10 with it off) and three additional charges in the case, plus a quick-charge feature will give you four hours of use in 15 minutes. For calls, a collection of six microphones are onboard with the company's VoiceAware tech. And lastly, the earbuds are IPX5 rated so they should withstand workouts just fine. JBL says a forthcoming over-the-air update will deliver Bluetooth 5.3 and LE Audio to both the Tour Pro 2 and Tour One M2.
JBL is also expanding the Tour Series with a new set of noise-canceling headphones. The Tour One M2 is an over-ear model that offers both the company's True Adaptive ANC and JBL Pro drivers. The noise-canceling tech monitors and adapts to your surroundings in real time. The company is also debuting a feature similar to Sony's Speak-to-Chat tool that automatically pauses audio and activates ambient sound mode when you talk. JBL calls it Smart Talk and the feature resumes your previous ANC setting when you're done speaking. The company's Personi-Fi 2.0 is on these as well, giving you customized audio to meet your sonic sensibilities. JBL Spatial Sound is here too, as is a low volume EQ that keeps audio quality consistent when the content isn't as loud. In terms of battery life, the company says you can expect up to 30 hours with active noise cancellation on or up to 50 hours with it off. If you find yourself in a pinch, a quick-charge tool will give you five hours of listening in 10 minutes. JBL says “four VoiceAware - equipped microphones help with calls, so on paper these should be suitable for any chats that might arise.”
I’m damn waiting to see Tour Pro 2 in hands. As far as I saw the videos on Instagram, the UI on the display of the case is really interactive and very useful. Moreover I haven’t notice any kind of lags or pickups any where while they used - as most of the first generation products with gimics offers. And I presonally prefer Sennheiser HD 350BT over Tour One M2. Anyway let’s see will this tech put forward new trend or will gets go back into the hw stuff and this is - Edwin K Jayesh.
