You know what, I'm going to add to this after all. Ray tracing is a gimmick and infamous for how intensive it is on hardware where it updates in real time, such as in video games. Before it was considered at all feasible outside rendering CGI, there were other methods of simulating light that were far easier for hardware to handle and, honestly, the difference between them (I can't remember what the name of the algorithm is) and ray tracing is minimal.
Adding to the problem is video card manufacturers pushing it while not increasing the VRAM on cards that are now expected to handle ray tracing, NPC scripts/AI, all other graphics, and stream encoding at the same time. GPUs have not seen a meaningful increase in VRAM in years despite the push of 4k graphics and ray tracing.
Oh and handling generating in-between frames to increase FPS/hide poor optimisation and up-scaling from 1080p to 4k or 8k. Sometimes both at the same time (in addition to the rest).
Further compounding it is consoles using stripped down versions of GPUs but not allowing users to upgrade them or other hardware. At least not in an easy way that doesn't void the warranty.
There's only so much that can be off-loaded to other components and it is a Choice™ to decide not to include an option to disable features that minimally improve the graphics (I specify graphics since more than one game has been released where turning off ray tracing wasn't the first thing recommended to turn off if you wanted to hit 30+ FPS) but can and do overwhelm GPUs.
Mandatory Ray Tracing should be banned in games. Genuinely absurd to think the majority of consumers are running high performing RTX graphics cards.
#i have a suspicion that this plus the price increase in gpus is to push people to rent computers a la geforce now#and gpus are one of the main ways developers compensate for having dog shit optimisation#the others being (hoping) the end user has enough ram to hide memory leaks#and high hdd/ssd capacity so compression doesn't need to be optimised#(also a high or no data cap since so much is downloaded rather than coming on a physical disk)#some developers are better at having granular options than others too#some will let you tweak or disable damn near everything so it runs best on your system and so you can choose what looks good to you#while others do the bare minimum and can't even be bothered to let users change things like particle effects or ray tracing#your options are basically play how the developer decided (regardless of your system) or not play at all#if the game runs fine until x or y or z but then starts to stutter/crash and would be fine if you could turn things down/disable things#you're sol if the developer didn't bother to allow changes outside of gamma and anti-aliasing for example#also not everyone has a 4k display or notices minute details#some people don't even see a difference between 30 fps and 60#don't get me started on how so many developers treat colour blindness as something spiteful rather than a medical condition#but more and more developers are forcing large and/or intense graphics/textures rather than giving users (aka customers) an option#or having a separate additional download if someone does want 4k or 8k textures#you know the way so many games operated when <720p displays were common but there was a way to download hd textures#for people who wanted them *and* had a display that could do 1080p#though it goes back to the (usually) aaa publishers and how graphic generations hit their peak a while ago#adding more polygons isn't something big or noticeable anymore unless it results in a performance *drop*#(the team fortress 2 snake immediately comes to mind)#(or the final fantasy 14 grapes)#ray tracing is one of the buzzwords used to sell a remaster (possibly to people who bought the game before)#or indicate a game/console is new and not part of a previous generation

2019 Mega Drive Explorations [1]
It takes me a long time to do some things and I’ve finally gathered up a bunch of Sega Mega Drive / Genesis titles that I’ve been meaning to play, hopefully through their entirety, or replay and take as many screenshots as I can. These aren’t going to look like most other screenshots you’ll see online, though; I’ve been using an NTSC filter because I believe it’s the visual format in which these games look best. So, let’s take a stroll through the material so far.
Super Hydlide (1989)
This is one of the best “old style” action-RPGs I’ve played. I’ve gone in with barely any prior knowledge, and I think that’s how to best experience it. Spoiling yourself on the extent and workings of its mechanical systems would, I think, turn it into nothing more than leveling up and finding the next place to go. The range of overworld which you’re initially able to explore is fairly restricted, and, as the action-RPG designation suggests, there are no randomized battles. Because of details like your need of food and sleep, or the encumbrance limit, though, it’s a deep relief to return to a town after some exploration in a way that reminds one why this trope of wilderness vs. domesticity caught on. You might just find yourself exhaling when your enter an inn. In another game, your character’s attack would likely be assigned a hitbox straight ahead of the sprite, but Super Hydlide locally assigns it to your right arm/hand, and it’s a welcome quirk in a game with super basic combat. There is no in-game map (or, if there is, I haven’t found it yet), and so -- as with Simon’s Quest -- I’ve been drawing my own on a sheet of gridded paper.
Above: the same screen at different times of day.
I hope that this blog’s emphases and its audience make the claim that I think Super Hydlide looks amazing at least appreciable. Everything has just enough detail to render the object, being, or space as categorically legible while retaining ambiguities, and there’s a variety where you might not expect it, like the grass around the building above, that gives each screen a kind of visual grain that an ornate and time-worn carpet might have. Complementing this is a soundtrack that seems unaware of the console’s audio capabilities in a way that another contemporary Mega Drive release, like Sword of Vermilion, certainly was not. That’s fine, though; the sound’s smallness, with those lite approximations of exclamatory synth brasses and the percussion’s dusty, dinky punches, enhances the cute visual aesthetics: people, monsters, and buildings you could hold in a pair of cupped hands. Especially remarkable is the overworld theme, “Chaos Separator” -- almost three minutes long, a duration that was basically unheard of at the time.
Atomic Runner Chelnov (1992)
Chelnov has me torn between wanting to share either as many screenshots of it as I can or as little. It’s so stunning to behold that exposing anyone who hasn’t played it to its sights seems like a disservice. It’s in extreme contrast to the game’s original arcade version, too, which may as well be a different game. Every stage is a stream of layered ornaments, and continuing to play to see more of this is motivation alone. At first I thought the graphic theme was one of a general “exoticism”, with ziggurats settled above lava giving way to stepped Mayan pyramids, but then the penultimate stage threw architecture designed by Antoni Gaudí my way, making me wonder if the theme is more broadly “eclectic” -- choosing certain settings and motifs for their dazzling power alone. This is one of those run ‘n’ gunners where your character will keep running unless you stop them -- but you soon have to start running again anyway, since the screen keeps moving right and only stops for bosses. It took me playing through half of the game to figure out how to turn around. Please, if you want to give Chelnov a look: consult a controls FAQ.
El Viento (1991)
If you’re looking for level design that’s a mixture of the mundane and the out-of-control, El Viento might be for you. One moment you’re walking through an open sewer channel, exploding the occasional fish; the next, you’re navigating a bundle of platforms that feel way too closely packed together for your character’s sprite size as you attempt to outrun a never-ending flood of rats that move at speeds never before recorded. One moment you’re going through an apartment’s door into an empty interior; the next, a tank bursts through the opposite wall and just starts hammering you with missiles and bullets, giving you only five feet of space to work with. It’s the second in a trilogy of games, which includes Earnest Evans, a game perhaps most notable for all of its footage making it appear that the players are incompetent on purpose, but which in fact plays more or less the same no matter how good you are. Grave sacrifices were made so that the titular character could be a composite sprite. El Viento’s level design hews closely to Earnest Evans’, with the important difference that its protagonist, Annet Myer, is controllable.
Even with its problems, El Viento is charming. It’s nice to play a videogame with a female protagonist who’s not creeped on by the artist(s) (perhaps we can, in part, thank technical limitations for this). The palettes and style of pixel art bear an uncanny resemblance to Master of Darkness, released for the Game Gear and Master System, and give each stage a distinct, almost dirty granularity. For me, El Viento gets especially interesting around the fourth stage, a ship’s engine room (or... factory?) that’s preceded by a short segment that has you crossing water on top of a cartoon-eyed dolphin. The level design transitions to looking like a network from Metroid Fusion -- a knotty maze with small destructible points that cause chain reactions, oddly small platforms, moments where you’re not sure what’s interactive and what’s not, and low ceilings underlined by spike-beds that necessitate you make use of a crouch-dash mechanic that feels like it shouldn’t work the way it does. It’s a hardly perfect yet precious occurrence of extinct, or endangered, level design, and the developers apparently had a confidence in letting it, as it were, speak for itself, because there’s not a single enemy to defeat throughout.
Jewel Master (1991)
Wanting to hear Motoaki Takenouchi’s incredible score, one of the Mega Drive’s best, in its intended context was almost totally my incentive to play Jewel Master. It’s a fine, somewhat haphazardly designed action game; not bad, not memorable, but for the music. You acquire different rings, some optional, as you go from stage to stage, and can assign them to a total of four active slots on an equipment menu. Different combinations will lead to different effects -- or you might want to leave a ring on one hand on its own. It’s a neat idea in the abstract. In practice, you’ll often be better off sticking to one set-up per stage until a boss demands a switch. The level design is pretty uninspired, and it increasingly makes artificial attempts at challenging the player by burying you under swarms of suddenly-appearing monsters. When this happens, you just have to hope that you can make it out alive. There’s not a whole lot to look at, either: the stages’ environmental peculiarities and palettes are minimal to an extreme, although I do love that the protagonist’s sprite seems to take a cue from Rastan’s by only moving his legs when he walks.
Gynoug (1991)
My experience with, and interest in, shumps, is next to nonexistent, so I don’t have a ton to say about Gynoug. Why’d I bother? Well, because of the weird and grotesque enemy and boss sprites, which combine the mechanical, exoskeletal, and visceral. The first miniboss is like a floating snapping turtle... except without legs, and a head that’s a toothed skull. Later, in stage two, you’re confronted by the bow and head of a ship that reveals itself to be the hat atop a colossal, wrinkled face. Maybe it was expecting too much to hope that the settings would match the bestiary’s inventiveness, but only stage three and four wowed me. If it’s not a game I’m going to be returning to any time soon, it was worth going through once.
That’s all for now. Other titles I’ve been exploring and will write about at some point include Alisia Dragoon, Cadash, Chakan: The Forever Man, Elemental Master, Light Crusader, Mazin Saga: Mutant Fighter, Mystic Defender, Shining Force 2, Splatterhouse 2 and 3, Two Crude Dudes, and Ys III.

Flexible Skill Points for D&D 5e
So, this is a little custom module I’d alluded to a bit ago, that I’ve been working on recently! I’ve been interested in a way to add a bit of skill point customisation to characters in 5e, but other solutions I’ve seen (like importing previous editions’ skill point purchase subsystems) weren’t really working for me as far as retaining existing game balance and complexity. So, here’s another attempt to solve the problem!
My basic motivation in designing this system is to provide people with additional nuanced options for character building and development, while remaining near enough to the level of complexity and scale seen in rules-as-written 5e, to mesh well with the existing system and not require much additional rule tweaking as a result.
(While I’ve run numbers for some basic test cases with these rules, they’ve not gone through full play-testing as such... yet. Tweaks might be made once they have! Or if someone notices an issue I haven’t thought of yet.)
Anyway, without further ado...
Basic Rules for Customisable Skill Bonuses
1. For every even-numbered level you reach, you gain skill points you may assign as you choose to any skill or tool use bonus. These are in addition to existing Proficiency Bonuses gained through class, background, feat, etc. choices.
2. The number of skill points you gain at each level is dependent on your Intelligence ability score: half of your INT modifier, rounded up, with a minimum of 0.
Characters with negative INT modifiers do not lose points.
Apply Ability Score Increases before determining bonus skill points available when leveling up.
Bonuses provided by removable magic items, etc. that raise a character’s INT score above 20 do not apply for the purpose of determining available skill points. Calculate skill points based on your INT modifier without the removable item.
3. No single skill may have a total bonus from assigned skill points and proficiency bonus combined that is greater than 1.5x your proficiency bonus, excepting specific features that grant you double your proficiency bonus for a particular skill (e.g. Expertise).
A character who gains the Expertise class feature (or equivalent benefit of doubling your proficiency bonus from a feat, etc.) may apply it to a skill they have previously assigned bonus points to, but they must reassign those points to different skills when they gain that feature.
A character who gains the Jack of All Trades feature applies the bonus from that feature in addition to assigned skill points when making skill checks. That bonus also stacks with assigned points in determining whether a total bonus would exceed the maximum 1.5x proficiency bonus.
Change to PHB Rules As Written: A character who has the Jack of All Trades feature and then gains the Expertise feature from the same class, may only apply Expertise to one skill at each level increase, for a total of 2 expert skills instead of 4.
Additional notes about my goals/thought processes for this module beneath the cut for other system nerds who might be interested -
Providing a mechanical incentive / removing the mechanical disincentive for giving your character a higher INT score compared to every other ability score (which affect attack, damage, AC, saves, HP, social skills which tend to get more frequent play than the strict knowledge-based skills affected by INT bonus, etc.), for anyone besides an INT caster.
Letting characters have or develop casual hobbies or interests, complex backgrounds and accompanying knowledge sets, etc. that are reflected in the system mechanics! While the proficiency system as-is does well at differentiating character classes & capabilities from one another, its lack of ability to branch out or allow characters to grow in skill breadth, can make it frustrating or dissonant to try and roleplay emerging complexity when the mechanics make any attempts to do so essentially random in whether they’re likely to succeed.
At the same time, not infringing on rogues’ class niche of “gets to be good at more skills, more dramatically, than other classes”; or breaking anything too badly with the bonus points per level scaling and accidentally making wizards and/or bards ridiculously overpowered in a way they wouldn’t be in vanilla rules.
While a magical item that increases your INT modifier would sensibly make you better at picking up skills just as a “natural” increase in your INT modifier would, the fact that you can stop using such an item and then lose part of that bonus opens up an issue of whether you should also take away skill points gained from leveling up with that item attuned, if you take the item away. But, since having to keep track of e.g. when you got the item, how many extra skill points you gained from having it and where you assigned them, etc. would add a lot more granular bookkeeping needs than other aspects of this system or 5e in general, I prefer to go with letting players keep any skill points gained that way, but setting a cap on the total maximum points gained per level so INT-increasing magic items aren’t abusable. 20 seems like a sensible cap to me because it’s the “natural” cap for ASIs, etc., and so represents to me a sustainable level of mental skill, where a person could integrate skills learned at that level of intelligence into the rest of their knowledge even if it’s a level temporarily achieved via magic. Above 20, for a baseline humanoid PC, is a level that may let you temporarily learn a skill, but not store that knowledge on a long-term basis because of the biological limits of humanoid memory and mental capacity.

OnePlus 8 Pro Review: Slickest Android of 2020
While there have been a handful of Snapdragon 865-powered smartphones, the OnePlus 8 Pro is easily the most anticipated one. It’s the company’s first true flagship and OnePlus has finally relented to offer things like wireless charging and an official IP rating, apart from the bells and whistles you’d expect from a top of the line premium flagship. After a week of using the phone as a daily driver, the phone is clearly good at what it does, but it’s not as flawless as OnePlus claims it to be, especially when you consider other options in this segment. Here’s our review of the OnePlus 8 Pro —
OnePlus 8 Pro performance
The OnePlus 8 Pro variant we received for review comes with 8GB LPDDR5 RAM and 128GB UFS 3.0 storage. Powering it all is the Snapdragon 865 SoC. Which basically guarantees the 5G part. Yet, despite being a key partner for Qualcomm, OnePlus has interestingly skipped on a lot of features that comes with the chipset by default. That includes features like being able to shoot HDR videos, portrait videos, unlimited slow-motion recording, HDR gaming, 8K videos and a lot more. Then again, OnePlus did include things like live captions, audio zoom when you’re zooming in on a video, a 10-bit HDR display and of course, the full suite of 5G support. If you are looking for a flagship that includes more of the Snapdragon 865 features, the Mi 10 and the Realme X50 Pro are good options to consider. Benchmark analysis The Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 flagship chipset is the primary driver of performance in this smartphone, combined with a 120Hz display and the OxygenOS 10 software. These three things come together to offer a fast, stable experience which is very much worth the premium you spend for this phone. Yet, it’s the same hardware that keeps the OnePlus 8 Pro from achieving the highest scores in benchmark apps —
It’s surprising to see a Rs 34,999-priced Snapdragon 865-powered smartphone to outshine this year’s OnePlus flagship on benchmarks, but that’s just what we saw. And it’s not just the iQOO 3 5G we’re talking. Every single flagship Android phone we’ve tested this year has beaten the OnePlus 8 Pro on benchmark, although, the difference is perfectly within the margin of variance we expect in scores. Over the OnePlus 7 Pro last year, we saw around 15-18% boost in performance, which is good enough since there’s no app or game that’s specially built for this chipset, neither does it improve the experience in a noticeable way, as compared to the OnePlus 7T Pro that launched last year. Real world usage
What does improve the experience is the 120Hz refresh rate on the phone. It feels far too smooth when compared against last year’s OnePlus 7 Pro, which again felt the smoothest back when it launched. The in-display fingerprint sensor is fast and accurate enough to unlock the phone in the first attempt, but more often I found the face unlock engaging even before my finger was scanned. A single scroll can browse past a lot more elements on the screen without looking stuttering and blurring. The haptic feedback is also strong and concentrated and typing on this phone is slightly better than the other Snapdragon 865-flagships. The UI also feels far more responsive, and thanks to the gesture navigation, switching between apps takes less than a second. However, there are chinks in this otherwise powerful armour. The OnePlus 8 Pro kept freezing for a few seconds every time my Instagram Stories feed would encounter a video, and sometimes even when I was scrolling down a recipe online. Unfreezing required a quick lock-unlock, but the issue persists even as I am writing the review. Nevertheless, we’ve reached out to OnePlus about it, and they have acknowledged it. So safe to say, a patch is incoming. The phone also heated up quite fast when used outdoors. I was out taking camera samples in a hot afternoon in Delhi and the phone heated to well over 50 degrees prompting it to issue a temperature warning. It didn’t shut down though, and quickly gave me a ‘temperature has been restored’ message right after I entered my building. In comparison, I have been taking samples from all other flagship Android phones this year out in the afternoon and this is really the first time I came across the phone heating just by using the camera out in the open. Can this be fixed with a software update? Unlikely. Gaming performance
Thankfully, I never saw the overheating sign while gaming. The OnePlus 8 Pro responds really well to games, even when you are not using the Fnatic Mode that’s tuned to improve performance and keep away distractions. Yet, despite all the games we played, nothing really made the most of the high refresh rate display to run at 120FPS. But the nicely tuned display did deliver some fantastic visuals regardless. Except for Fortnite which ran at 90FPS but at low graphics, everything else was clocked to 60 FPS. Unfortunately, Fortnite didn’t allow us to clock performance using GameBench as it doesn’t support Android’s Developer Mode and USB Debugging.
CPU frequency distribution while gaming on the OnePlus 8 Pro We did play our usual rounds of COD: Mobile and PUBG Mobile. The former clocked a stable 60 FPS with 99% stability while the latter delivered 59 FPS at 98% stability. The numbers are good enough for smooth gameplay. The touch response is good for a quick scope using a sniper on COD: Mobile’s multiplayer. The 2.86GHz prime core was regularly engaged while playing PUBG Mobile (despite which it couldn’t achieve 100% stability) while the CPU usage was around 30% at its peak. On COD: Mobile, the prime core hit 2.6GHz only twice and that too when my player died and had to respawn. There’s definitely room for improvement here, and OnePlus can do it with further tuning in a future update. Having said that, OnePlus devices have been popular enough among gamers for the company to seriously consider allowing more granular tuning of the CPU and GPU that we have seen on phones like the Asus ROG Phone II.
Software performance
I was using the Mi 10 before I started to review the OnePlus 8 Pro, and it’s really the OxygenOS 10 UI that sets the phone apart from all other Android smartphones. It’s just as slick and fast as stock Android, but comes with a lot more features. In front of skins like MIUI and RealmeUI, OxygenOS is far more refined and it just blends in with your life. There are no ads or bloatware that distracted me from the task at hand. And the UI elements, combined with the high refresh rate of the display feels far more responsive than anything else I’ve reviewed this year. The good thing is, OnePlus emulates the same experience on the OnePlus 8 and even the older OnePlus phones that are still receiving regular updates with new features every 1-2 months. I’ve also come to realise that using a OnePlus right when it launches will feel like a work in progress. The company has a penchant of using software builds riddled with bugs at launch, and there are a handful of them in the OxygenOS 10.5 version my unit came loaded with. The dark mode would invert colours of black and white pictures, especially on WhatsApp, while the live wallpaper app I was using (Metropolis. You guys should try it) had to reload the wallpaper after I would use an app or play a game for a long time. There’s also no always-on display. We’re at the cutting edge of AMOLED display technology here, but OnePlus still hasn’t figured out how to make an always-on display work. Remember, it used to be there until one random update took it away. And it never came back. The phone still shows incoming notifications discreetly on the screen, but you will have to pick it up or tap twice on the panel to surface it. But I did like the Google Assistant ambient mode the phone goes into when charging. It’s hella useful with all the information I need, right on the lockscreen.
OnePlus 8 Pro camera performance
The OnePlus 8 Pro features not one, but two 48MP cameras this time in a quad camera stack. There’s a primary 1/1.3” 48MP Sony IMX689 sensor that’s slightly larger than the 1/2” footprint of the previous generation. Then there’s another 1/2” 48MP IMX586 that’s used in the ultrawide lens which is what sets this phone apart from others in this segment. The quad camera stack also includes an 8MP telephoto lens with 3X hybrid zoom and a colour filter lens which was defunct in our review unit owing to the ongoing controversies around how it can see through plastic, and even clothes. What was OnePlus even thinking? During the course of using the phone, I was mostly staying indoors and the most of the outdoor samples you will see in this review are a result of quick grocery runs or taken while I was out walking my dog. But it still gave us a good idea as to how this flagship camera performs. We have uploaded these photos to our Flickr gallery in their original resolution. The samples below have been resized for the web. 48MP Primary camera with f/1.78 aperture and OIS Among all other OnePlus cameras we have tested over the years, this one gets the closest to beating the premium flagships in terms of the details and sharpness it produces when the light is optimum. Tricky situations don't perturb the camera all that much either and we managed a few good shots to show for it. The dynamic range is also quite good with photos balancing out the highlights and shadows to appear far more natural, than say the saturated output from the 108MP camera on the Mi 10. Samples below —
What did irk me was a tendency for the camera to highlight blue tones a lot more in the photos, and in some cases, noisy details, especially for indoor shots. The camera also has a smaller plane of focus which became apparent when I was trying to take photos of my culinary adventures, but it’s not the first time I’ve seen this issue. It’s present in almost all large-format high-res camera sensors, and there are reasons to believe that this is an inherent issue of the large sensor size and the lens arrangement inside the phone. Here’s an example —
Excessive blue tones is an issue that needs to be addressed.
The area of focus is also quite small, causing issues in taking close-ups Videos from the primary 48MP camera aren’t all that good, especially when you compare against the regular OnePlus 8 and the Mi 10. It takes horribly long to focus on a subject up close and even when you do, it will drop the focus mid-way into the shoot and never recover until you start all over again. It’s a frustrating experience, and it happens at both 1080p and 4K resolution with 60 FPS output. The OIS is good enough for stability but the steady mode was what I used to take a stable video from an e-rickshaw I rode recently. 48MP Ultrawide camera with f/2.2 aperture and 119-degrees FOV. Throughout last year when these high-res sensors kept coming on smartphones cheap and expensive, I wondered what it would take to get the same amount of details from the ultrawide lens. The iPhone 11 series proved it doesn’t have to be treated as a step-child, but the OnePlus 8 Pro made it at par with the primary camera. As a result, you’ll get the best results from this ultrawide lens than from any other Android flagship right now. The 48 MP camera also delivers the best dynamic range in the wide-angle shots, among its peers and this is certainly a welcome addition. Samples below —
Surprisingly, the 48MP ultrawide lens is better at maintaining focus of a close-up object while taking videos than the primary camera. And if not for the smaller aperture which makes it unusable for videos when the light is low, this is what should have been the primary camera for videos. 8MP Telephoto lens with 3X hybrid zoom and 20X digital zoom The telephoto lens cannot keep up with the level of details you get from the other two cameras. OnePlus combines optical and digital zoom to let you zoom 3X, but details often look broken and full of noise. It lacks the sharpness you get from the other two lenses, and frankly, I used it much lesser than the primary and ultrawide lens. It’s also slightly slower in shutter response, but that’s more or less expected from a telephoto camera.
Night Mode OnePlus claims it is using new algorithms for the Nightscape mode for low light photos. But the quality of images you get mostly is the same we saw in the OnePlus 7T Pro with no dramatic improvement. What has improved is the speed at which the phone shoots a burst of photos at varied exposure, and I’d go out on a limb and say the processing is also a bit faster. But still not necessarily better.
16MP Selfie Camera Being not much of a selfie camera user, I only take a few of them for the review. And it did come out good, with my face looking natural by default. There’s an option to smoothen the details as well. The selfie camera can also take lowlight shots using the Nightscape algorithm, and can shoot 4K videos at 60 FPS. You also get a slow-fie option.
OnePlus 8 Pro Battery Life
I used the OnePlus 8 Pro for about a week as my primary device and the battery life is just about okay. If I am a little frugal in my usage, it can easily last a day. But on days where I’m on my phone all the time, the screen times range around 4-5 hours before it needs a quick refill, at the QHD+ 120Hz setting. It was 4 hours 30 minutes on the first day I set up the phone, downloading and installing all my apps, and restoring my WhatsApp data from the Mi 10 I was using previously. After that, with rounds of benchmarking, using the camera, gaming, back and forth texting and replying to emails, the phone lasted a good 6-7 hours. You can lower the display quality to extend the battery, which is what I’d suggest when you can’t be near a charging point throughout the day. Watching 30 minutes of HDR content on Netflix drains the battery by around 6 per cent while 15 minutes of COD: Mobile drained the battery by around 5 per cent.
OnePlus 8 Pro design and display
The OnePlus 8 Pro looks and feels like the premium flagship it claims to be. And OnePlus has finally included an official ingress rating for the phone. It is IP68 rated but it doesn’t cover water damage under warranty. However, it can easily survive a tumble in the sink or heavy rain. OnePlus has also included another much desired feature - Wireless charging. That too at an unheard of 30W speed, which requires the Warp 30 Wireless Charger sold separately. We didn’t get the chance to test it out yet. The variant we received was the Glacier Green colour, and on this, the company has given a matte finish which reminds me of the Pearl White variant of the OnePlus 6. It’s much slimmer and lighter than before now that the pop-up mechanism is replaced by a punch-hole camera on the display
The 6.78-inch QHD+ AMOLED display covers 90% of the body with very thin bezels on the top and bottom edge. On the side, the screen curves sharper than before, and while I admire the aesthetic, it actually hinders the display experience. There’s significant discolouration around the edges and that becomes apparent in the camera app, or when you’re watching a movie. The colours on the curved parts look different from the flat area. It took me a while to look past that. The panel also has a slightly warmer tinge owing to the DCI-P3 colour space it uses by default. Also the peak brightness only hit 786 lux in our light meter, which is far lower than what we saw on the regular OnePlus 8 and even on the Mi 10. We clocked upwards of 900 lux on them. The minimum brightness is still the same at 6 lux and I did feel my eyes strained while using it before bed.
OnePlus 8 Pro bottomline
The OnePlus 8 Pro ticks all the boxes for a premium flagship this time, and if not for an inconsistent camera performance, it would have been at par with the Samsung and Apple flagships. And that sort of breaks the deal for me because I need a camera that can take photos and videos with consistency for the content we produce on YouTube and Instagram. So if that’s not something you have to deal with, the OnePlus 8 Pro is the easier option to choose between the premium flagships available right now. There’s also the OnePlus 8 which works just as well sans the wireless charging, water resistance, 120Hz at QHD+ display, and a high-res wide-angle camera, which should be the primary reasons to buy this instead of the regular OnePlus 8. Introduction
In this article, we will explain the best methods to growing your own microgreens. In a previous article, we reviewed in detail the reasons to start your own microgreens business.
FINDING YOUR NICHE
One of the most critical decisions in starting a business is to understand what you want to sell. As mentioned earlier, not all markets are the same. First, you need to understand what product consumers in your area need most. Next, you need to try to find your niche.
Generally, those who sell microgreens follow one of the following three strategies:
1-Mainly sell commodity microgreens such as radishes, peas, sunflowers, brassicas.
2-Mainly sell specialty microgreens such as beets, corn shoots, cilantro, basil, mustard, amaranth, etc.
3-Sell all varieties.
You almost certainly won’t be able to sell all varieties initially, but you’ll need to choose one of the other two solutions.
If there are no other microgreens sellers in your local market, you can quickly start with commodity microgreens, which are easier to sell because they are better known. Conversely, if there are already other sellers in your market, try selling microgreens varieties they don’t have and focus more on specialty products.
The good news is that the growth rate of these products allows you to change your offering quickly. So, if at any point you find that one product is more in demand than another, you can start producing it immediately.
THE BEST MICROGREENS TO GROW
Microgreens come in a wide variety of shapes, colors (green, yellow, red, purple), textures (ten-der, crunchy, juicy), and flavors (sweet, neutral, sour, spicy) offered by the different varieties.
Radishes, broccoli, arugula, and cabbage are among the easiest species to grow. Sunflower microgreens are also very popular and are among the most commercially viable.
However, the latter pose a few more problems for beginners. For more information, I recommend that you read the last section of this book, which contains detailed in-formation about the main types of microgreens you might want to grow and sell.
The advice I can give you to get started is to focus on a few varieties of microgreens. You can begin by growing just three or four types. Over time, you can decide to expand your production to other varieties as well.
GROWING MICROGREENS
As mentioned earlier, microgreens can be grown in two ways: in soil or hydroponically. Growing in soil is more straightforward and suitable for beginners. In the following sections, I will show you both ways.
You will definitely need to buy seeds that have been explicitly produced and packaged for micro-greens. These seeds have low levels of foreign matter, are not treated with fungicides or other chemicals, and are well cleaned.
This is especially important when buying seeds for pea, corn, or spinach microgreens, as these species’ seeds are usually treated with a fungicide. Seed companies have also introduced several special microgreens varieties that are a marked improvement over the standard types.
Many of these have brightly colored or modified first leaves, such as green-leaved radish varieties and those bred for pea shoots. Some microgreen varieties have mucilaginous seeds, which means the seeds form a thick, gelatinous layer that retains the moisture once moistened.
Watercress and basil are examples of mucilaginous seeds,
and you should not soak these types of seeds before sowing. Larger grains such as wheatgrass, corn, and peas can be soaked in warm water 24 hours before sowing, although this step is not essential.
The microgreen seed should then be weighed and sown as evenly as possible on the wet surface – the use of seed shakers will help. The correct seeding density depends somewhat on the species being cultivated.
Once the seeds have germinated, microgreens need light and nutrients to produce a high-quality product. Artificial lighting does not need to be intense, and these young seedlings do well under grow lights as long as the lights do not produce too much heat that can burn the tender young foliage.
When the cotyledons (seedling leaves) are visible and begin to develop chlorophyll, the seedlings have used up the reserves contained in the seed. At this stage, the young plant begins to photosynthesize and produce its own assimilates, and the root system takes up nutrient ions.
Generally, after about ten days after sowing (it may be more or less, depending on the variety you grow), you can start harvesting.
However, before choosing a method (with or without soil), you need to understand which is ideal for the seeds you want to grow.
SOIL METHOD: STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS
To grow your microgreens using this method, first make sure you have all the material you need:
Seeds
Water jar
Growing trays with drainage holes
Growing trays without drainage holes
Soil mix
Spray bottle
You can buy all of these materials individually at specialty stores or, even better, in special kits that include everything you need. If you want to save money, you can buy the seeds and use the materials you already have in the house.
Below are general instructions that you can use for most seeds that can be grown in soil. However, certain microgreens may require special care.
It is therefore always advisable to read the instructions that the seed supplier usually includes with the products. The best suppliers can also give advice and explain everything you need to do to grow these specific seeds that you have purchased.
Step 1: soaking
Wash the seeds with a filter, germination bag, or in a germination container.
Soak the seeds for about 4-8 hours (depending on the size of the grain). You can soak them in the same bag or jar.
Place the seeds in the germination bag or jar and wait for them to germinate. You will need to wash them two or three times a day. Once they reach the same size as the grain, they are ready for sowing.
You can skip the previous two steps and sow the seeds directly on the moist substrate, especially if they are very small or slimy seeds.
Step 2: preparing the grow tray
Insert the planting tray (with holes) into the watering tray (without holes). Prepare the growing tray by spreading the substrate on the tray with drainage holes, forming a 2-3 cm thick layer. You can use containers that you have at home or special trays made for this purpose.
Ensure that there are no pieces of wood or other materials in the soil that would hinder the growth of plants.
Then press lightly on the soil with your hand to smooth it out. You can use a spatula to help you do this.
Do not overdo the pressure: the soil should not be too compact. Soak the soil with water without puddling it to keep it moist and spongy.
Step 3: planting
Spread the germinated or ungerminated seeds evenly over the ground and compact them a little with your hands. You should leave enough space between each seed. This space can vary depending on the size of the seed. As a rule of thumb, the space should be the same size as the seed you are planting.
Step 4: covering
Cover the seeds with a light layer of soil and water them lightly with your spray bottle (this will encourage germination).
Now take the tray without holes, spray some water into it (this will create a humid indoor environment), and then cover the first tray. You can now put the tray in a place that is not too hot or too cold.
Step 5: maintenance
Every 12 hours, lift the lid and spray some water to keep the soil moist. It is essential to keep the soil moist without letting it puddle, do not let it dry out.
At this stage, the plants can be enriched with a solution based on compounds rich in trace elements, increasing the nutritional value of the plant, but this is entirely optional.
Two options for fertilizing our micro garden are kelp-type algae powder or macerated compost.
Step 6: uncovering
During the first 3-4 days, you must keep the plant in the dark (the “blackout period”). After this time, the tiny leaves of your plant will appear.
Now you can lift the upper tray (the one with holes) and pour some water into the lower tray (the one without holes). This way, your seedlings can absorb the water not only through the upper mist but also through the roots.
Step 7: growing
Microgreens need a lot of light. Therefore, it is necessary to expose them to direct sunlight after 3-5 days or, even better, use LED lamps.
At this stage, it is crucial to keep the plants well hydrated. The soil needs to be moist but not soggy. Check regularly, including weighing the tray (if the soil is too dry, the tray will be very light).
Step 8: harvesting
After 2 -4 weeks after sowing, your microgreens will reach the desired size. Now you can gather them by hand with scissors or a sharp knife in small bunches, from the outside inwards, and at ground level.
Cutting height is critical because high-quality microgreens require a good, clean portion of the stem below the leaves, but they should not be cut so low as to risk contamination with the growing medium or material in which the seeds were sown.
This is especially important if light, the granular medium was used for production, as particles can be easily trapped during the harvesting process and contaminate the product. Clean, sharp shears are suitable for cutting microgreens on a small scale, while larger growers use mechanical harvesters.
During warm growing climates, microgreens, like herbs and lettuce, are best harvested earlier in the day when the foliage is still cooler and plumper. This extends the life of the packaged product.
Please note: Do not throw away the soil after harvesting. You can still use it to make compost!
Step 9: Storing
After harvesting, you need to dry the microgreens. You can use a sieve to do this and then use some paper towels. When the microgreens are completely dry, you can store them in the refrigerator for a few days.
Some microgreens are shipped to customers while still growing in trays or cells to extend shelf life and be harvested on-site when needed.
Method 2: Hydroponic method
Hydroponics consists of the cultivation of various species without the use of soil. Contrary to what many people think, it is not expensive to do hydroponics at home.
There are hydroponic systems on the market that are designed for small spaces and at an affordable price.
Hydroponic microgreens have a distinct advantage over those grown in substrate trays or soil mixes because there is no granular growing medium to use.
The high seeding rate and density of microgreens mean that tiny particles of the substrate can get into the foliage. Since microgreens are not usually washed off after harvest, there is a risk of the crunchy grains getting into the final dish.
For this reason, hydroponic microgreens are best grown in a thin or capillary mat that holds the seed in place and retains some moisture for germination. Paper towels, linen cloths, rock wool cubes or sheets, fine kitchen towels, and hydroponic microgreens pads can all be used to grow a clean, high-quality crop at a low cost.
Hydroponic systems for microgreens can be as simple as a small, flat, hand irrigated kitchen tray or as complex as a nutrient or aeroponic film technology system.
Ideally, the growing system needs to have a balanced, slightly sloped surface to layout and moisten the ever-growing mat/pillow paper or fabric.
Doing hydroponics at home is very easy; you can buy your hydroponic system or build it at home. Hydroponics is an excellent form of growing with this technique, you can grow lettuce, arugula, herbs, kohlrabi, cabbage, strawberries, tomatoes, among others, in a small and compact space.
You can do this growing at home, in your apartment, in the kitchen, or even on the terrace. These hydroponic kits allow you to cultivate about 40 to 90 plants per month and can be used for lettuce, arugula, herbs, beets, cabbage, strawberries, tomatoes, among others. The time from cultivation to harvest varies depending on the species grown.
From a practical point of view, the steps for growing microgreens hydroponically are no different from those already described for the soil method. The seeds used are the same as those used in traditional cultivation. You still need a planting tray and a watering tray.
In this case, the only difference is that you do not plant the seeds in soil but another growing medium such as phenolic foam, coconut fiber, rock wool, or vermiculite.
I recommend phenolic foam as it is more practical, hygienic, and biodegradable. It provides good support for the tiny seedlings and is porous so that the roots are optimally supplied with moisture.

Past Conventional Person Intent: Why & The right way to Go Granular
New Post has been published on http://tiptopreview.com/beyond-traditional-user-intent-why-how-to-go-granular/
Past Conventional Person Intent: Why & The right way to Go Granular
As web optimization priorities have shifted through the years from a deal with key phrases to a extra content-centric strategy, the recognition of the subject of user search intent has risen correspondingly — and rightfully so.
At this time, most web optimization professionals agree that content material constructed for explicit person intents just isn’t solely extra helpful for guests; it’s extra more likely to rank in search engines when it counts probably the most.
Search engines (Google, particularly) have invested an incredible deal in sniffing out person intent for any explicit question, having realized that customers are extra glad when content material not solely matches a key phrase however addresses the intention of their search.
For instance, higher intent matching is a component of Google’s BERT project (the pure language processing AI engine that discerns the intent of a search question).
With BERT now affecting nearly 100% of search queries, it’s time for a deeper dive on the subject of person search intent.
Conventional Person Intent Classes
For so long as search intent has been a subject for web optimization professionals and content material entrepreneurs, now we have relied on a couple of comparatively broad person intent classes.
Commercial
Proceed Studying Under
The listing varies relying on whom you ask, however these are sometimes included:
Informational: The person is searching for data a couple of matter. These are sometimes who/what/when/the place/why/how queries, although they don’t have to incorporate these phrases.
Navigational: The person desires to get to some particular web site or web page. Usually this person has a selected process in thoughts or is aware of/suspects the placement of the knowledge they’re searching for.
Transactional: The person desires to purchase one thing, though the transaction doesn’t need to be financial. This person is able to take motion.
Local: The person is on the lookout for a useful resource geographically near their present location (or a said location).
These conventional classes have served us effectively, as they neatly sum up the primary the explanation why anybody goes to a search engine (at the very least in broad phrases).
They assist web optimization professionals and content material managers plan and create content that’s extra more likely to be helpful to explicit customers and, subsequently, extra precious to search engines.
From Broad to Micro Intentions
Nevertheless, as with all such broad classes, it could typically be helpful to interrupt them down additional.
For one factor, whereas we will be pretty sure search engines use some type of the normal person intent classes listed above, it’s seemingly that machine-learning driven tools similar to BERT allow them to go deeper, to discern what we’d name micro-intentions.

Google has talked concerning the usefulness of accelerating granularity of broad classes in different contexts. One good instance is the idea of micro-moments.
Micro-moments are an enchancment on the normal understanding of buyer journeys.
The idea goes past the normal funnel classes. Within the online realm, shoppers typically have many small steps throughout a number of gadgets that affect their last buying resolution. Research on this matter underpinned Google’s “zero moment of truth” idea, an addition to the normal marketing journey.
The “Zero Moment of Truth” (ZMOT) consists of all interactions a shopper might need on quite a few gadgets over time that collectively affect their last buying resolution.
We will apply an analogous mannequin to develop what I name “micro intentions” – the smaller, a number of search intentions somebody might need inside the extra in depth conventional person search intent classes.
Why Micro Intentions
Do not forget that the “O” in web optimization stands for “optimization.”
The act of optimizing for search is a quest to offer probably the most authoritative, related response to a question in probably the most user-friendly method doable.
Micro intentions come into play in the course of that authority/relevancy/usability triad: they hone the relevancy of content material to explicit person must a sharper diploma than is feasible with simply the “big four” conventional intention classes.
Profitable micro intent searches can add as much as vital victories over time, a lot in the identical manner as an web optimization skilled would work to extend authority by acquiring better-targeted hyperlinks or enhancing usability by making incremental tweaks to web page pace.
The place Micro Intentions Are Helpful
Admittedly, the usefulness of micro intentions is increased for among the massive 4 intentions than others.

For navigational and native person intent, the variety of micro intentions matches the variety of queries.
The micro intent is inherent within the question itself.
Somebody looking out “Microsoft website” clearly desires to go to microsoft.com, whereas the individual looking out “pizza north New Jersey” is searching for out the most effective pizza that exists on this planet, clearly.
My micro intentions idea is most helpful for informational and transactional queries, so let’s see what this appears like in these classes.
Some Proposed Micro Intentions
Analysis information on what these micro intentions are doesn’t but exist, to my data.
Nevertheless, we will make some cheap suppositions for the informational and transactional classes.
Informational Micro Intentions
I’ll begin off with the tweet by Mordy Oberstein that impressed this text:
One thing I have been fascinated with.
“We” write issues to “inform” – “informational intent”
I hate that time period.
I believe we should always write to teach – academic intent.
Diff? YES!
One is targeted on the content material the opposite on how the reader will assimilate that data! pic.twitter.com/SzXsJ4c09P

I disagree with Mordy barely.
I don’t assume academic replaces informational intent; fairly, it’s a micro intent of the informational intent class.
Instructional content material is only one sort, too, though it’s in all probability the biggest subset of that class.
So how is academic content material a extra particular variety of informational content material?
I believe academic content material is that which matches into nice element on a subject. It satisfies the person whose want is for greater than a fast reply or a selected reality.
Instructional content material is created for the person who desires to increase their data on a subject; to return away figuring out an excellent deal extra about it than earlier than they entered their question. It’s, subsequently, sometimes longer than most different types of informational content material.
What are another doable micro intentions below the informational class?
Factual: The person desires to find out about or confirm a particular reality.
Tutorial: The person desires to know find out how to do one thing.
Expansional: The person desires associated subjects or areas of growth on a base matter.
Aggregational: The person desires to see quite a lot of ideas or opinions a couple of matter.

Are you able to see that every of those calls out for a particular sort of content material?
That’s precious context that “informational” alone doesn’t provide you with.
To develop into probably the most related reply for particular teams of customers, you’ll want to assume past the massive 4 classes.
Transactional Micro Intentions
Many transactional queries are self-contained micro intentions, much like how native and navigational intent queries work.
That’s, they comprise the micro intent inside themselves. An instance could be “buy Nikon d5600 digital camera.”
However there are true micro intentions for much less particular transactional queries.
Listed below are a couple of examples:
Categorical
The person desires to purchase a sort of factor however doesn’t essentially care which of that sort they’ll buy.
Customers simply wish to see a show of choices and can make their selection from there.
This would possibly appear to be an informational question, but it surely’s not (for search functions) as a result of this person is able to purchase.
Looking for out extra info earlier than shopping for just isn’t their prime precedence.
Commercial
Proceed Studying Under
Locational
This is a superb instance of how the massive 4 intentions can bleed over into one another.
This person is able to purchase and simply desires to know the place to purchase it.
Though the “where” doesn’t need to be a bodily location, there are parts of informational and native intent at play.
For this micro intent, you wish to be the best choice in each doable manner.
Generic
This person doesn’t care what model they purchase; they only wish to purchase the factor they want.
Info on a landing page for this micro intent must transcend the manufacturers accessible to focus on different differentiating elements (value, options, and so forth.).
Micro Intentions & Content material Technique
The idea of micro intentions is most helpful for web optimization professionals and content material strategists seeking to enhance site visitors and web site income by increasing the vary of queries for which they rank.
At a sure level, after optimizing for the entire excessive quantity head phrases in your market, such development can solely come by digging deeper into long-tail searches.

That is the place designing content material for micro intentions is more likely to produce higher outcomes than merely counting on the normal massive 4 intentions.
Do not forget that Google is actively searching for to enhance its means to match person queries with the content material that almost all precisely matches their intent. And with BERT-style expertise, it’s extremely seemingly they’re doing that at a degree far more granular than the massive 4.
Which means there’s vital site visitors up for grabs to the websites that may create probably the most content material aimed toward micro intentions.
How do you discern what micro-intentional classes individuals are trying to find in your matter areas?
One nice useful resource, at the very least for informational queries, is Google’s ‘People Also Ask.’ The precise questions folks ask will be clues to micro intentions.
One other could also be Google Question Hub (simply opened to US publishers as I write this text).
Listening to your clients, speaking to your gross sales and customer support reps, and analyzing your inside web site search analytics may additionally present helpful clues to micro intentions in your market.

Water Filter for Shower
Whole House Water Filters Eliminates sediment From Your Drinking Water
Water Filter for Shower is very important. A lot of us have been warned that the water we drink is not safe to drink if we are not using a filtration system of some sort. So, how can you tell if you need a whole house water filter, if you just can't tell what is inside your water? Testing your drinking water is usually the only way to determine if it's picked up harmful contaminants along its journey from your tap to your house.
Most tap contains chlorine and other chemicals. Chlorine kills bacteria and germs, but it also destroys the beneficial bacterial strains in your drinking water. It is a gas, so it makes sense that it would be present in the sediment from your faucet. A whole house water filter will remove this gas, as well as any other chemicals or gases that are present. Sometimes, these chemicals or gases can be present in the form of other compounds called particulates. These particulates are too small to be trapped by a single filter, so they need to be removed by an additional filter.
Whole house water filters also get rid of sediment. When you take a shower, the water goes over your skin and into your hair. You also may shower in the sink. This water leaves behind traces of shampoo, conditioner, deodorant or other chemicals that you may not want to be present in your drinking water. A good whole house water filtration system will remove any of these contaminates. A variety of water treatment systems will do this, but it is generally the responsibility of the homeowner to choose the best one for his or her needs.
Filtering contaminants before you drink can prevent several diseases. Some of the diseases that can be prevented by a good whole house water filter housing include cancer, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and other degenerative diseases, chronic fatigue and other illnesses. You may be surprised to learn that your tap water contains many carcinogens, heavy metals, pesticides and other contaminants, as well as radioactive material. Water treatment systems do not remove all of this. A whole house water filter housing will effectively remove some, while leaving others in your drinking water supply.
Your taste buds can be greatly improved by using a whole house water filter housing. The majority of these devices will reduce chlorine by about half, though some will reduce it up to one third. They will also remove sediment, which is one of the major causes of bad tastes and odors. Even if your taste buds are not significantly affected, you will reduce your chances of developing several other types of bad tastes by removing chlorine. Chlorine has been shown to increase the risk of developing bladder cancer, so removing this from your drinking water is a good thing. Many of the products will also provide improvements in your digestive system, such as reduction of constipation, as well as improvement in the elimination of cholesterol.
A good filtration device for the home will provide better UV protection than any other filtering system on the market. The whole house water filter has a variety of options for UV protection, including a carbon block or ceramic media block with a one hundred percent UV protection factor. This UV protection will make sure that any contaminants are eliminated from every water source, even your own.
The typical activated granular carbon filter has filters on both the inside and the outside of the unit. The inside of the device is typically made of nylon fabric. On the outside of the device is a carbon mesh. These two components work to trap particles and keep them from entering into the main body of the filter. They can be purchased in a variety of sizes, which will depend upon how much water you expect to be filtering. The larger the filter, the more typically it will filter the larger amount of water at once.
When using a whole house water filter, ensure that you purchase a product with an ion exchange system. An ion exchange system exchanges metallic ions for sodium ions. Electrolysis has proven to be extremely effective at removing sediment from your drinking water, but it is also costly and can remove many beneficial minerals as well. By replacing your ions, you will retain many of the healthy minerals found naturally in our drinking water. An ion exchange system will balance the pH level, mineral content, and taste of your drinking water.

Better Difficulty Modes
Difficulty in games is a pretty hotly-contested subject.
The most recent hullabaloo came about from this article on a “skip boss” button. Many are vehemently against the idea. Others loved it. A few fell somewhere in the middle. My opinion? It depends on the game. A “skip boss” button itself might not be a good idea, but maybe an optional invincibility mode is (Nintendo games used to offer an invincibility star if you died too many times, or there’s the old school godmode cheat). Ideally, this is tied to bonus points, or score, or achievements, or unlockables--but I digress.
Here’s what I want: better difficulty options for all kinds of players. We can have our cake and eat it too, if we just spend some time thinking.
First things first: not all games need difficulty options. For some games, difficulty is integral to the experience. Dark Souls is a common example: its core gameplay loop is built entirely around its difficulty, and the experience would unravel if it was too easy.
But I’d argue most games aren’t built around difficulty.
Enter difficulty options
The standard approach is a decision between some variation of Easy/Normal/Hard at the beginning of the game. Normal might be the developer-intended way to play the game, Easy is for those who want to relax after a hard day’s work, or for little kids, or for those who want to experience a story, or for those who just aren’t very good at games (and that’s ok, by the way). Hard is for those who want an extra challenge and maybe extra achievements or unlockable secrets.
But we need better difficulty settings, because there’s a problem with Easy/Normal/Hard: it’s an uninformed choice.
Uninformed choice is a bad choice
In other words, when you ask the player if they want to play on hard mode, what does that mean? More HP to enemies? More complex AI? (ha, right) Cheating AI? Fewer powerups? More XP needed to level up? You don’t know until you actually play the game, and sometimes even then you aren’t sure. The player has to guess what they’re getting themselves into.
This isn’t good choice.
Sure, you might know you generally prefer Easy mode, and for most games that offer these options, it ends up working out. But we can do better!
Informed difficulty settings
First, let’s tell the player what’s going on. Some games explain what different difficulty modes mean. This is a much better version of Easy/Normal/Hard. For example, Shadow Warrior 2:
If you’re going the traditional Easy/Normal/Hard route, add these descriptions. Inform your players’ choices. Tell them they’ll take 50% less damage and get more healing items. I enjoy the personal touch here, reiterating that Easy Mode is a perfectly valid way to play.
(Another good example of this is Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition. Check it out! Even though I usually like a challenge, I’m unashamedly playing on Easy because AD&D 2 is freakin’ brutal.)
This is a good choice, because players now have an understanding of what they’re getting themselves into. But guess what? We can do even better--we can give the player control!
The ideal: custom difficulty settings!
Keep Tourist, Easy, Normal, and Hard modes, but also display a list of more granular difficulty options beneath--these granular options can get highlighted and switched on when a particular difficulty mode is selected. The player can choose one of the basic options, or create a Custom difficulty--perhaps even save custom difficulty profiles if there are a lot of settings.
The mockup below isn’t perfect (I got tired of placing each individual letter), but it’ll give you a general idea. Also these are not options for The Waking Cloak (though some of them might be).
Some things I might change even here: I didn’t highlight which individual settings get counted as Easy/Normal/Hard as they were selected. And I’d like to add a better description for what each option does, especially for players who’ve never played the game before. I also considered some kind of indicator for whether a setting counted as very easy, easy, normal, hard, or very hard, like a colored underline--green for easy, red for hard. There’s more, but the mockup should at least give you the idea.
Ideas for custom difficulty settings
Story/Tourist mode - just wander around and experience the story. No fighting.
Save types - player can save wherever they want, only at designated save points, or ironman (only one “suspend” save file, deleted on death).
Dungeon guide - a glowing “critical path” to guide players through dungeons. If you have this option on, you can still turn the guide on/off.
Skip boss button - display the skip boss button to optionally allow players to avoid them.
Enemy amount - fewer, normal, lots. Ideally on the “more enemies” settings, you’d have different types of enemies that force the player to think more critically
Enemy speed - movement, attacks, etc. Test those reflexes! This is a more meaningful, fun way to increase difficulty than just giving enemies more health. Bullet sponges aren’t fun.
Enemy strength - Also much more meaningful than bullet sponges. You can even have an instakill option.
Enemy health - some people like bullet sponges. More power to them. You can even have different options, like regenerating health.
Passive enemies - enemies are all still there, but they don’t attack you. Good for little kids or those who don’t like violence.
Healing hearts/potions - turn your ability to heal on or off. Want the harrowing feeling of no healing items out in the field? Go for it!
Survival Mode - you need food/drink/shelter to survive. Also? Diseases! Fallout 4 and Skyrim are adding these modes, and I approve!
Nuzlocke Challenge Mode - specifically for monster collection RPGs!
The main thing to keep in mind is that not everything will work in every game. Design difficulty settings around particular mechanics in your game. As we’ll see later, a driving game might have options that ignore hydroplaning to make things easier or manual shifting to make things more difficult. A stick shift mode wouldn’t work in The Waking Cloak, nor would survival mode make sense in a racing game.
Ok, so what’s the catch?
More settings means more testing. More options means more development time and more work. You need to decide which variables to expose. You need to program the game so that these variables can be exposed in the first place. You’ll need to spend more time considering completely different play styles.
You also want to be very careful to not lead players down the path of least resistance against their will. This is the thing I have against fast travel. Some people like it, and that’s fine. But to people like me, who enjoy the journey of walking around and exploring, it’s more like a temptation. From experience, I know I’ll enjoy the journey more, but once I start fast traveling, I always fast travel, and the game becomes a lot more shallow to me.
(There’s another principle of game design around fast travel--make walking around more interesting and varied. But that’s another discussion for another time.)
You don’t want to overwhelm the player with options. Analysis paralysis is a thing. Try to only reveal the options that are most meaningful to the player and the game’s mechanics. Walking the fine line between too few and too many options might be difficult.
Examples!
This isn’t a new concept. Plenty of games have implemented granular difficulty settings.
Way of the Passive Fist - four sliders allow you to choose your difficulty. This is nice and granular, allowing for all kinds of tweaks.
Darkest Dungeon - from Mark Brown’s tweet. I like that this explains that you’ll be changing the experience. Notice how the difficulty settings are linked very closely to game mechanics, like monster corpses or enemy crits.
Forza Horizon 3 - the description is nice, because that makes your choice even more informed. I also like that it’s clear that you get bonuses for harder settings. Again, notice how difficulty settings are linked to game mechanics, such as steering, ABS, and tire wear.
Invisible, Inc. - I’ve heard good things about the difficulty setting here! Once again, difficulty settings are linked to game mechanics. One review stated that choosing custom settings was letting the player try out game design, and I agree.

Improve Your WordPress SEO With These 8 Advanced Tactics
Are you aware that implementing basic SEO on your website may not be enough?
How do you know that you are implementing every tactic that your competitors are and more?
There are many ways to ensure this. The first and probably the most primary one being competitor research.
In this blog, we will discuss the advanced tactics that you can use to improve your WordPress SEO.
Tracking Conversions Using UTM Parameters
When it comes to improving your SEO strategy, nothing can be worse than having wrong or incomplete data or no data at all!
The best way to avoid a situation like this is by using UTM Parameters in your links used solely for marketing.
You should start using UTM Parameters in links you are using on social media or URLs you are using elsewhere with marketing or SEO campaigns.
Google Analytics does not record your traffic source by default, which means you are left with only a general analysis of your organic traffic. Now, this can be considered as an incomplete data when it comes to making assumptions on the basis of SEO data.
But by using Google’s Campaign URL builder, you can change this.
Step 1: Enter the website URL.
Step 2: Then, enter the campaign source (like Google, Newsletter)
Step 3: Enter the campaign medium.
Step 4: Next, enter the campaign name (like example_campaign).
Step 5: Enter your campaign term. You can enter the keywords here that you are tracking as part of your campaign.
Step 6: Proceed by entering the campaign content, which helps you differentiate the ads that you are running alongside.
Once you add all these UTM parameters, your URL will probably get too lengthy. You can use a link shortener to shorten it.
With these parameters, you will be able to go in-depth. From monitoring CTA to tags in content that are converting best, you can get as granular as you want with this.
This data will help you find out what works best for you, and eventually, you can use it to make adjustments and improve your SEO strategy.
Keeping tabs on your target audience also becomes easy and effortless with this extraordinary tool.
Fix Indexing & Crawling Issues with Duplicate Content
While this might come across as a very basic issue, it is really not that basic.
Especially when you have a thousand webpages, and your website is hammered with duplicate content issues, finding all of them can be a challenging task itself. So until and unless you are an SEO expert with years of experience, this is a big issue for you.
If you speculate that your website is getting overburdened with duplicate content issues, you need to carry out:
⦁ A content audit to identify duplicate content on-site as well as off-site.
⦁ A technical audit to find out how the content is making your website suffer.
Optimizing Noindex Categories, Tags & Archive Pages in WordPress
If not optimized properly, these pages can be a major issue for WordPress websites.
By simply searching on Google using the site: operator and domain name (for example – site: abc.com), you will get a good idea of what is happening there, by seeing the indexed pages.
Compare this with the pages that Google Search Console recognizes. If these numbers do not match the physical webpages indexed on Google, you have a serious duplicate content and indexing issue.
Find out which webpages have these issues and optimize them properly.
Optimizing for Schema Markup
Are you familiar with Schema Markup and its importance for SEO?
In case you’re not using Schema.org structured data to target Search Engine Result Page (SERP) marketing efforts, you are missing out on a lot!
Although it does not guarantee instant position zero rankings, not targeting SERPs with this feature is a mistake.
Not doing Schema.org microdata optimization means you are losing out on competitive SERPs with rich snippets and other snippets.
There are three ways to optimize for Schema.org in WordPress:
Using standard Schema.org structured data markup.
Using Schema.org plugins.
Using Google Tag Manager.
Speed Optimization
As Google updates rolled out over the years, speed became a ranking factor for both desktops and mobiles.
If we talk about e-commerce sites, then we can imagine how crucial speed is for them considering how little time the audience is willing to invest in waiting for a site to load.
Google likes to see a minimum page speed to ensure that the particular e-commerce website is capable of serving user demand and satisfying their needs.
The faster your website loads, the better it is.
According to research, 2 seconds is the actual threshold for e-commerce website acceptability. That means this is the type of speed users love to shop with and want. However, Google aims for under a half-second!
Meaning, if you can optimize your website well enough to load in under a half-second, you are going to wipe out all your competitors from your way.
No doubt, it is a challenge to get WordPress to load in under a half-second, but if you are willing to put in the required effort and time, it can be done.
When it comes to optimizing your page speed on the advanced level, there are several things you need to do starting from optimizing your images (a basic page speed optimization bottleneck.)
Implement a Content Delivery Network (CDN)
Implementing a Content Delivery Network must be a requirement for larger websites.
CDN helps you reach a wider audience in more locations faster instead of just serving one location.
Plus, this can significantly decrease your page speed.
Watch Your Permalinks Settings
People who are not much familiar with WordPress can often skip this.
Once your website goes live, you need to be extremely careful of your Permalinks settings. Failing to do so, your permalinks will start showing 404 errors suddenly, causing you to face some significant rankings drops.
If you have a larger team that lacks management, you will likely encounter a situation like this. Even one team member can create chaos by changing these settings, leading to a ranking drop so severe as if you have a penalty.
So in case you have a WordPress site and ever get into a scenario like this, Permalinks settings are the first thing you need to check.
Google clearly states in its guidelines that your URL structure needs to be organized and user-friendly. But unfortunately, the default WordPress URL structure options given under Permalinks doesn’t make an ideal URL structure for Google.
Post name and categories is a great structure to follow to make sure your URLs are optimized and Google-friendly for your audience as well as niche.
But WordPress does not have this option. What do we do then?
Let’s see!
Go to your WordPress backend and click on Settings> Permalinks.
Next, select custom structure, category, and then post name.
Note:
Provided that you have a plugin that is configured to do this specifically, you might end up causing severe harm to your search engine rankings as one of the side effects of doing this is introducing 404 errors on your website in places where there weren’t any before.
This is why it is critical to keep an eye out for your Permalinks settings all the time.
Experiment and Research
We know there are a few people who feel that experiment and research are a no-no and that with some SEO basics and best practices, we can do everything.
However, the real world hardly ever works out like that.
From competition to industries to SERPs, everything changes, but this isn’t new.
Without experimenting and researching, you can’t upgrade your strategy and adapt to the latest best practices when the old ones stop doing the trick for you, and without doing all these, you simply cannot succeed.
Sticking to the same things you have always been doing can only get you the results you have always got. To gain better results, you must employ better tactics and experimentation and research are the only ways to do that.
Do not hesitate to experiment. Learn to go beyond your comfort zone, discover new things, and see how it works out for you.
Conclusion
SEO is all about changes and how fast you adapt to the trend to stay in the competition. It is essential first to get your basics done before you get on to the advanced SEO. Research your competition to see what and how they are employing both on-site as well as off-site. Doing things beyond the basics will reap you better rewards. With these eight advanced tactics, you will be able to give your SEO strategy the wings it needs to take off!

New Post has been published on https://techcrunchapp.com/retail-technology-news-and-analysis-for-omnichannel-retailers-15/
Retail technology news and analysis for omnichannel retailers
RTIH: Tell us about OneDash
RP: OneDash provides interactive technology to help brands make an instant return on their content investments. By directly connecting the point of inspiration and transaction, the platform creates faster, easier, and more valuable shopping experiences from every perspective.
Consumers can immediately access what they want; going straight from initial product interest to browsing and buying, in just one click. For retailers, the ability to simply monetise media and increase interactivity drives better results.
As well as boosting engagement, cutting out extra steps such as re-directs to external sites helps to shorten journeys and reduce the risk of drop-offs. In the long-term, that means higher sales, greater brand loyalty, and a sharper edge over competitors.
RTIH: What was the inspiration behind setting the company up?
RP: Succeeding in the online retail environment isn’t easy. Not only do today’s consumers have an endless range of content to choose from, but the number of brands vying for their attention and spend is constantly multiplying.
Several years ago, I came up against these issues myself and this experience is what formed the foundation for OneDash. Keen to move on from the oil and gas sector, I sold my business and focused on fashion.
But after launching in Singapore, I realised how hard it can be to enter new markets. It became clear there was a wider need for efficient and affordable technology to help companies in the same position, which is exactly what I decided to build.
OneDash started life as an interactive solution for fashion brands – used to add shoppable ‘hotspots’ in fashion show content and live streams – but it has expanded rapidly.
The power of interactive video to enhance cut through and fuel action makes it a vital tool for any company, and our reach has grown to cover multiple industries. In the near future, our aim is to explore further opportunities, looking beyond video to make all forms of media more interactive and effective.
RTIH: What has been the industry reaction thus far?
RP: At the start of 2020, the increasing appeal and maturity of shoppable video had already taken us to the point of daily conversations with major media and direct-to-consumer clients. But with the global Covid-19 situation has come an exponential surge of interest in both the advantages it offers and our streamlined solution.
Businesses are recognising that providing real-time interaction and purchase options is vital to meet the rising consumer need for close brand connection and instant gratification. As a result, they are shifting from consultation to action at speed – with some large agencies accelerating discussions from weeks to days – and setting their sights on multi-faceted implementation.
For instance, recent months have seen a sizeable uptick in demand for interactive video that runs across both native channels and social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook.
At an internal level, the influx of new and diverse enquiries has also helped improve our insight into business requirements across sectors; enabling us to better identify how OneDash’s tech can be reshaped to meet specific needs and deliver more value.
“Many bricks and mortar retailers are heading for deep attrition, especially those with big investments in physical restaurants and commercial property. To sustain their businesses, it will be more crucial than ever to support high street outlets with stronger online activity”
RTIH: What has been your biggest challenge/setback?
RP: Recent trends have worked in favour of interactive video, but we are still a new company that is working to revolutionise shoppable media and that is our greatest ongoing challenge. While appreciation of the need for change is growing, there is still some way to go before we reach mass global adoption and establish a new standard for sophisticated video advertising.
This mix of positive and negative also applies to many other obstacles. Because our work is about enriching digital content, we have been affected by the pandemic-driven disruption to media budgets and planning; with declining content production causing a knock-on effect.
Yet the ability to monetise pre-existing video has also meant companies struggling can use OneDash to bolster ROI across social, programmatic, and native environments.
Personally, I have also had the challenge of an unplanned stay in London. Just when lockdown came into force, I happened to be stopping over after unveiling OneDash tech at DX3 in Canada, meaning the changeover turned into four months away from my family and home.
This time in the UK, however, had beneficial outcomes; allowing me to dial up local sales activity and focus more energy on building client relationships.
RTIH: What are the biggest challenges facing the online retail sector right now?
RP: Many bricks and mortar retailers are heading for deep attrition, especially those with big investments in physical restaurants and commercial property. To sustain their businesses, it will be more crucial than ever to support high street outlets with stronger online activity.
Of course, this brings difficulties of its own. Key among the problems with the digital segment is that consumers tend to be loyal to convenience first, in addition to what they already know.
This means that simply dialling up their online presence isn’t enough; retailers must master the basics of seamless online service – from financial fulfilment to last mile delivery – and rapidly give shoppers what they want.
There are varied tactics retailers can deploy to deliver the smooth and speedy shopping experience consumers expect, but one of the most impactful is going interactive. By adding clickable elements to videos and leveraging advanced direct in-cart integration they can satisfy consumer needs and present them with relevant products, before their competitors do.
RTIH: What’s the best questions about your company or the market asked of you recently by a) an investor and b) a customer?
RP: A San Francisco-based investor recently asked us: “what are the potential artificial intelligence (AI) applications for AB testing and content recommendations before a creative is released?”
This query wasn’t just important because it had a critical bearing on their willingness to invest; it also opened up new avenues for OneDash. The idea of using AI to give a content creator simulated feedback on a creative before serving it aligns perfectly with our emphasis on innovation and cost saving. What’s more, we also have the data collection and behavioural analytics necessary to make it happen.
Improving data evaluation is a rising priority for customers too. One question from a client about how to find the optimal channel for video ads has also led to developments in our analytical capabilities.
Where we had previously enabled clients to track creative performance across channels, introducing unique tags has made it possible to collate and compare data in a more granular way.
For instance, clients can now use smart algorithms to assess data in real-time and determine how their ‘master’ ad should be adapted for different channels and markets, such as cutting it to 30 seconds for display or 15 seconds for social.
RTIH: What can we expect to see from OneDash over the next 12 months?
RP: In short, branching. We’ve made considerable headway with driving the transition to truly interactive video, now OneDash is ready for the next phase of shoppable progress.
The release of our branching module will allow companies to tell an array of amazing stories via any distribution channel. With segmented video they can enable individuals to pick their preferred narrative, giving them greater control over how they interact with content and an even more tailored experience.
The added bonus being that it has the capacity to increase personalisation while keeping spend at a minimum; instead of building numerous creatives, brand marketers can showcase their entire product range in a single video and let the viewer decide which ones they would like to discover more about.
Alongside several other projects for improving multi-team collaboration and centralised creative management, this branching solution is set to make for an exciting 2021; for our clients and OneDash.

So I Finally Flashed A Custom Rom On To My Mi 9T
I wrote about my experience with the Mi 9T. And there I could see the problems with Mi 9T but the phone was so good I wanted to ignore them. But they finally bothered me enough that I had to switch. Specifically these were the problems:
No notifications on the lock screen
The phone app would not close immediately after hanging up which would drive me crazy
Not being notified of calls on my Mi Band 4. SMS would work for whatever reason. But not calls. (Turns out this was a problem with the band, not MIUI. Just had to factory reset the band and it started working)
Notification spam (not ads, but annoying 'cleaner' notifications)
So I had quite a few problems when flashing a custom ROM. So I'd like to share those with you now in the hopes someone reads this and learns something.
Flashing TWRP
So I started to follow this guide. I say started because half way through it stopped working. Specifically the command fastboot reboot recovery. Turns out this command does not exist. I don't know if ADB removed this command after this guide was written but looking at fastboot reboot --help shows the only reboot commands are fastboot reboot bootloader (which I haven't tried but apparently boots you to fastboot which you should already be at so it's useless) and fastboot reboot emergency which boots the phone into EDL mode which appears to be not what I want.
I originally though this was a problem with the version of TWRP I was running because apparently there was some complicated chart about which TWRP you can use with which rom. So I used this TWRP from mar-on-o-fry-o. Or is that free-o? Anyways this is the Mi 9T rom which is codenamed 'Davinci'. There is a very similar TWRP by the same dev for 'Raphael'. That is for the Mi 9T Pro. They're different. The Mi 9T Pro one will not work for a Mi 9T and presumably vice versa.
So how do we get over the fastboot reboot recovery issue? Well, it's simple. We have to boot into recovery without using fastboot. Easy enough. Except not really. Because if you accidentally boot into MIUI it will revert the recovery back to stock. Bye bye TWRP. So that shouldn't be too hard. Oh, did I forget to mention when you exit fastboot the phone will automatically boot into MIUI? So, yeah. Pretty annoying. The solution is from fastboot to hold down the power and volume up button and keep holding it down until you see TWRP. Do not release when you see the Mi logo. That is a trick.
So that was a long convoluted process to install TWRP. But once you have TWRP everything is easy. What's that Linus quote? "With enough TWRP all bugs are shallow." Yeah, something like that.
Also when it says in the guide to 'format data' you actually have to do that step. It's not like some optional extra bit.
Havoc OS 2.9
So I installed Havoc OS 2.9. And I hated it. The fingerprint sensor was so bad it would only work like once in every 20 tries. And it would constantly flicker the brightness when trying to scan my fingerprint for some reason. But after a while of using it, it calmed down. (Although the brightness still occasionally flickers). I realized that the way you have to deal with the fingerprint sensor is to train it at maximum brightness. Then it will work reliably. Now it's even better than MIUI if I say so myself. It works every time. Like literally every time - even when my finger is slightly wet (although after extended use its reliability seems to be closer to 95-99%). And it's fast too.
Although that fingerprint icon (which appears on the lockscreen and ambient display) has a few problems. For instance when you lock the phone you can see it appearing for some reason and when you unlock the phone it jumps by like 1 pixel. Weird. Then there's Google Camera which I had trouble getting running. Eventually I installed this one called 'PMGC_7.0.009_Astrophotography_Version_V7.apk' from this thread which appeared to work.
Some other problems: there's is no quick settings toggle for automatic brightness. Which can be annoying as the automatic brightness keeps on changing in low brightness situations. Oh, also the quick settings at the top when you swipe down (when you see notifications and before it's expanded) displays a minimum of 7 icons. This was something that also bugged me in MIUI too. It's just so busy. Well, now I only have 5 icons total in the quick settings panel so that's how I deal with it. And the colours look a bit oversaturated at the normal mode. Not a lot, not enough to be bothersome. But it looks a bit weird.
Also one thing that I really started noticing is the vibration motor. It's really bad. I noticed it before but it wasn't that much of a problem because it rarely triggered. But for some reason whenever you have to go home, back, or to recents Havoc has to trigger it. And it is hella annoying. It hardly vibrates the phone at all and makes a ton of noise. It's the worst vibration motor I've ever had in a phone. Even worse than my Mi A1. I'm tempted to just disable it but the most granular control I can do is disable it for all touches which apparently means 'everything except calls' which is a little extreme.
Also the navigation options are... sub par. Havoc has stock navigation gestures. Which means that pill thing. It has pie and this new one that's like the pill I've never seen before. Also OnePlus gestures although there's no animation so I found it hard to use them. So I ended up installing this app called FNG. It stands for Fluid Navigation Gestures (not F**king New Guy) and was made by Francisco Barroso. Not the guy behind the Franco kernel, that's another guy. Man, there are a lot of developers named Francisco. At least more than you'd expect. Anyways it works surprisingly well. It has quite a lot of things you can do: swipe up from the left, right, and center, swipe left, and swipe right. You can even disable vibration on the navigation gestures. There's even an option to not need duplicate swipes when exiting a full screen app which I've complained about before. The only problem is it makes it harder to tap buttons on the edges of the screen. But that's always a problem with these navigation gestures.
Next up I really like the 'revert settings' icon. Basically when you touch a slider you get the revert icon. And if you tap on it you get the default value. You have to tap and hold to revert it back to default. A nice touch. And also I think the notifications have been redone. They're pretty nifty min-toasts. I also like how it has the 'expanded screenshots'. Basically it'll automatically scroll and take screenshots of the entire page. This is the first time I used it and it's really cool mostly because the process is fully automated. It's triggered when you take a normal screen shot and choose 'expand'.
So the customizations. Most of them are under the option Havoc Settings - Wreak Some Havoc. Which, I mean, is not the worst pun you could have made. Still pretty bad though. And there are a ton of options here. More than any other rom I've tried. Although some - maybe even most - are a bit unnecessary (I don't even know what they do) and many of them require a soft reboot to use.
And there's a few inconsistencies such as the fact that there's an ambient display and an always on display. Don't know why they don't just combine them. Especially as each one has a separate quick settings toggle. Also some options like the ambient display exist in two places. One in Havoc settings and on in Display. I'm using the one in Display because its raise to display notifications is faster for some reason.
Also another one is double tap to wake vs double tap to enter ambient mode. Speaking of double tap to wake it does not work out of the box. Apparently you need to use a Magisk module to get it to work. Magisk definitely did not exist in my Mi 9T days. Basically it's sort of like Root and Xposed rolled up into one and it works pretty well. So I just installed the module and everything started working.
But most of the customizations are pretty standard although comprehensive. Just keep in mind the required one is 'Statusbar padding' which you definitely have to use because the default padding of 0 is ugly. I use 12. And you can adjust the lock screen shortcuts which I missed in other roms. There's also smart charge (charge to max 80%). I haven't seen this since I had a netbook and found the option in the bios. Don't know why people don't include this setting more often. Also noteworthy is that there are a ton of 'recents options. Or that's 'multitasking switcher' if you're so inclined. I'm currently using slim which displays all the apps on the right and some have previews. Pretty nifty.
Oh, also there's an option to increase the number of volume steps. It's under 'buttons' for some reason. It's pretty useful especially as the default media sound is way too loud.
So how does it compare with MIUI? I'm not really sure. I mean, the only real reason I flashed this rom was because I wasn't getting notifications on my Mi Band 4. But apparently that wasn't related to MIUI.
So it doesn't do as much nonsense like hiding notifications on the lockscreen. But there are some things about MIUI I miss. Key among them is that there's a fingerprint icon which appears as you turn off the screen in MIUI. You can technically do the same thing in Havoc with the always on display but it's just not the same. It's just not as sensitive to moving the phone as MIUI and it's way too bright.
But this rom has a lot of features. More than MIUI. But it's not very stable. I mean, it's stable enough, but there are some annoyances I have. I think I'm going to keep this rom because it's not that much better or worse than MIUI. At least until a stable Android 10 rom is released with working bluetooth and does not require you to dirty flash over MIUI 11 with Android 10.
Edit:
Here's my thoughts on Havoc 2.9 for the Mi 9T in list view.
Likes:
Revert settings option
Charge to 80%
Granular volume controls
There's a neat little charging animation. MIUI's would take up the whole screen if the phone was off which is a bit annoying.
Neat toast animation
Scrolling screenshots
Slim recents
Fast fingerprint reader (perhaps even faster than MIUI)
Annoyances:
No autobrightness toggle
Too many icons in notification shade settings
Gestures navigation is disappointing (no animations for them)
Doesn't pad notifications by default
Bugs:
Double tap to wake does not work without a Magisk module
Upon viewing certain websites the selfie camera will pop out. MIUI did this to but the camera would immediately retract. Havoc does not retract the camera forcing me to go into the camera app and toggle selfie mode
In low brightness situations the autobrightness will sometimes (rarely) go back and forth between brightnesses ever few seconds
Sometimes after turning on the screen it will be stuck at 100% brightness until the screen is turned off and on again. Very rare and easy to deal with though
Colours look a bit oversaturated and display options don't do anything but I got used to them
Screen flickers when using finger print sensor on lock screen for some reason (minor)
Fingerprint icon is visible when locking the phone and the screen off animation plays
Fingerprint icon shifts by about 1 pixel upon waking the phone (barely noticeable)

Matt Cutts, a well-known software engineer at Google, revealed that Google Robot would certainly no more treat any nofollow web links, similarly, to stop SEO provider from using nofollow for PageRank sculpting.
