Quote
Among the most pronounced sentimentalists of the century, friendship completely adopts the vocabulary of erotic feeling. Thorild and his childhood friend Heurlin refer to each other with nicknames from La Nouvelle Héloïse; they call each other 'sweet lover', 'beloved of my heart'; Thorild promises to be a Julie to his friend's soul, and [Heurlin] meets his 'heavenly gaze', 'melts together' with his being

My Best of 2019: My Top 10 Films!
It’s time! What an outrageously strong year for film 2019 ended up being; in general of course, but especially when looking at just how great the very top tier films that were released this year are. Before we get started, a reminder that My Top 10 Films aren’t necessarily my list of the ‘best’, or ‘my favorite’, but a mix of the two, taking both sides of the A&E into equal consideration. Either one of those other lists would end up being outrageously different, and incredibly similar.
Before we dive into things, here are a few Honorable Mentions, all of which very well could have snuck their way into the main list: James Gray’s Ad Astra; Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story; Taika Waititi’s Jojo Rabbit; and Rolling Thunder Revue: A Bob Dylan Story by Martin Scorsese. Also, to check out my full Top 33, CLICK HERE.
And now, without further ado...
My Top 10 Films of 2019!!
10. Anthony & Joe Russo’s Avengers: Endgame
Tumblr media
Perfect despite its imperfections. Fan service galore makes this film both stumble and soar. It’s chock-full of genuinely great performances, exciting action sequences and time-travel. I’ll never not be there for that trifecta.
9. James Mangold’s Ford v Ferrari
Tumblr media
At its core, Ford v Ferrari isn’t about the war between two automotive giants, it’s about destiny and the drive toward the perfect lap. A stellar cast and Mangold’s technically pristine direction make this one fire on all cylinders.
8. Benny & Josh Safdie’s Uncut Gems
Tumblr media
Wow…
Who knew a two-hour anxiety attack could be so f*cking fun??
7. Olivia Wilde’s Booksmart
Tumblr media
I adore this movie. Tons of laughs and lots of heart; it all works equally great as high school comedy as it does as a coming-of-age story. What it really comes down to, though, is that I just really want to hang out with Gigi.
6. Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood
Tumblr media
Part revisionist history, part love letter to a Hollywood that once was, Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood is a tale of two men desperately trying to retain relevance in a world that’s drastically changing around them.
Tarantino’s vision here is a time machine; one that brings us back to both revel in a moment and right some wrongs. It’s a quiet film for Q. A film that respects its characters and their journeys. A film that understands them better than any since 2009′s Inglourious Basterds, or possibly even 1997′s Jackie Brown.
Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood is a film only Quentin Tarantino could pull off; a masterpiece of a period film that’s as meticulous in its detail as it is gleeful in their dismantling.
5. Sam Mendes’ 1917
Tumblr media
Gritty and grueling and emotionally exhausting, Sam Mendes' 1917 throws us into the trenches with an immersive race against the clock we don't often get to experience in a war film. An amazing companion piece to Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk, using different storytelling techniques for a different war to equally effective results.
4. Céline Sciamma’s Portrait of a Lady on Fire
Tumblr media
Told through the clouded lens of memory, Portrait of a Lady on Fire is the story of lost love. Looking back on something as powerful as love can be an overwhelming, heartbreaking thing.
“Don’t Regret… Remember.”
It’s not the love that hurts, it’s the loss. Céline Sciamma brings this idea to life beautifully in this film, exploring the loss of both life and love. It’s the loss of love that resonates most here, because unlike life, it’s not clearly quantifiable. Only those within it can truly know its weight. Visually, Sciamma brings these memories to life with a gorgeous, dreamlike sense, filling many scenes with a beautiful air of otherworldliness. The titular sequence is especially effective, allowing us to see the emotionally elusive Héloïse through Marianne’s eyes more clearly and spiritually.
“Do all lovers feel they’re inventing something?”
Thematically, Sciamma compares this fleeting love affair with one of the greatest, most tragic ever told; that of Orpheus and Eurydice. It’s a connection that feels perfectly matched in execution. It adds both to the haunting otherworldliness of these memories and to the significance of Héloïse and Marianne’s time together. It helps to quantify the loss of love. Thanks to the stunning execution of these themes, Sciamma’s visual immersion into these memories and astonishing performances from our two leads, Portrait of a Lady on Fire an absolute powerhouse. Especially that ending.
“Turn Around.”
3. Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman
Tumblr media
A quietly epic, immeasurably reflective, expertly edited life on film.
2. Greta Gerwig’s Little Women
Tumblr media
I fell in love with this one almost instantly, and love it even more now.
It becomes very clear, very quickly, that Gerwig understands and respects and loves these characters so damn much. More than that, she understands and empathizes with the relationships they have with each other, not only as a group, but as individuals. The way she handles the dynamics between the sisters, both on a whole, and in their one-on-one relationships with each other, is absolutely beautiful. There’s an understanding of family and sisterhood in here that, for better and worse, rings so damn true.
This is a funny and heartwarming film. It never betrays its characters and brings their story to life with as much humor as it does understanding and sentimentality, making all of the moments hit home with every ounce of weight they should.
And The Best Film of 2019 is…
1. Bong Joon Ho’s Parasite
Tumblr media
This film blew me away. I’m still speechless. It’s perfect.
Thank you for reading...
Enjoy!
-Timothy Patrick Boyer.

New from Kevin Wozniak on Kevflix: Top 5 – Most Anticipated Movies of the 55th Chicago International Film Festival
The 55th Chicago International Film Festival kicks off this week and it is a festival I love attending.  Not only was this the first festival that I attended back in 2008, but it is a festival that highlights so many unique movies from all around the world and showcasing some of the best filmmakers working today.  This year’s festival is no different, with a slew of movies from all genres from dozens of different countries.  I plan on seeing over 20 films over the next ten days and here are the five that I am most excited for.
        BONUS:
HONEY BOY (Alma Har’el)
CLEMENCY (Chinonye Chukwu)
I’ve already seen both Honey Boy and Clemency at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and was a big fan of both of them.  Both films are powerful and expertly made with some stellar acting.  Honey Boy, which was written by its star, Shia LeBeouf, looks at LeBeouf’s life growing up in the entertainment world with his abusive father. LeBeouf gives one of the very best performances of 2019 here.  In Clemency, the great Alfred Woodard stars as a prison warden who’s death row executions begin to take a toll on her.  Woodard could garner herself an Oscar nomination for this one, as should Aldis Hodge, who plays a death row inmate that gets close to the warden.  Both films are great and I am excited to see them again.
5 – KNIVES AND SKIN (Jennifer Reeder)
Knives and Skin sounds kind of like if Pretty Little Liars went full Twin Peaks.  The film follows the disappearance of a local teenager in a small Illinois town and how it effects her friends, her parents, and the entire town.  But the film describes itself as “mystical” which only makes me think that this isn’t your typical missing-girl film and I’m excited to see where Reeder takes this film.  Shot locally in Illinois, Knives and Skin looks to be a fun, wild entry in the After Dark section of the festival.
    4 – FORD V. FERRARI (James Mangold)
James Mangold is a director who feels like he has been riding the cusp of greatness for almost two decades now.  With films like Girl, Interrupted, Identity, 3:10 to Yuma, and Logan, Mangold is a director who has worked with a wide array of actors in a wide array of genres.  Ford v Ferrari could be the film that puts Mangold over the edge and puts him on the awards trail.  Starring Matt Damon and Christian Bale, Ford v Ferrari looks at American car designer Carroll Shelby (Damon) and driver Ken Miles (Bale) as they battle corporate interference, the laws of physics, and their own personal demons to build a revolutionary race car for Ford and challenge Ferrari at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1966.  The film looks gorgeous and promises strong performances and a great story.  This could be a big Oscar player at the end of the year.
3 – PORTRAIT OF A LADY ON FIRE (Céline Sciamma)
Since its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May, Portrait of a Lady on Fire has been a movie I have been anticipating seeing.  I have heard nothing but incredible things about this movie from some of my favorite critics, many of which have declared the film one of the very best of the year.  Set in the 18th century France a young painter, Marianne, is commissioned to do the wedding portrait of Héloïse without her knowing, which brings the two closer as Héloïse’s big day approaches.  I have avoided the trailer, all full-length reviews, and anything that might spoil this movies greatness.  We might have the makings of a truly special film here.
2 – KNIVES OUT (Rian Johnson)
Say what you will about The Last Jedi (I love it), but Rian Johnson is one hell of a filmmaker.  Rocking the independent world back in 2005 with Brick and flipping the time travel genre on its head in 2012 with Looper, Johnson knows how to make unique genre films with great visual flourishes.  Johnson’s latest is a classic whodunnit, as a detective investigates the death of a patriarch of an eccentric, combative family.  Johnson got a stellar cast for this one, with Chris Evans, Daniel Craig, Toni Collette, Michael Shannon, Jamie Lee Curtis, Don Johnson, LaKeith Stanfield, and Christopher Plummer starring in what is arguably one of the best ensembles of the year.  I love whodunnit films, I love Rian Johnson as a director, and I love this cast.
1 – THE IRISHMAN (Martin Scorsese)
Whenever Martin Scorsese has a movie coming out it’s almost guaranteed that film will be near or at the top of any “most anticipated” list.  At a spry 77-years-old, my favorite director of all-time is still putting out interesting films that keep the directors visceral style while adapting new technology and the ever changing cinematic landscape.  With The Irishman, Scorsese brings together an ensemble of cinematic icons, Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Joe Pesci, and Harvey Keitel, to tell the story about hitman who tells his life story and his involvement in the murder of Jimmy Hoffa.  Thanks to Netflix’s gigantic budget ($140 million), the film is going hard on the de-aging technology, as De Niro, Pacino, and the rest of the legends are getting the treatment, as well as offering up a three-and-a-half-hour runtime, which sounds incredible.  Early word is that this is another Scorsese classic and I am ecstatic that I get to see this movie on the big screen.
