GX 1 - Rick van der Linden

The album GX 1 is named after the synthesizer used in it, the Yamaha GX-1, and is entirely performed on that synthesizer. The Yamaha GX-1 was an analog polyphonic synthesizer with three manuals and a set of playable bass pedals. Rick van der Linden's performance on this shows some good use of different sounds as well as technically good performance. The album art for this features a "Programmable Tone Module" with Rick van der Linden airbrushed into a few of the trimpot spots. My favorite song is Wizzard Dance.

Hello! My friends have PowerPoint nights and for my next presentation I want to go over why Jaden Yuki is an absolute freak of nature™️. I remember a lot of stuff like the monkey, eating forks, the whole genocide thing, etc., but it’s been a while since I’ve seen the show and will miss a lot. Therefore I am calling upon your vast knowledge of this weird little guy to best explain to my friends why he barely matches the definition of human. The more the better, your aid is greatly appreciated in this quest

JADEN YUKI, LOCAL CRYPTID WHO LIVES IN ABANDONED BUILDINGS AND IS EXTREMELY HARD TO GET A PHOTOGRAPH OF?

After the events s3, Jaden chooses to move back into the red dorm which has, at that point, no one else living in it. He goes into a depression spree of hiding from everyone at school and not attending classes, just bumming around campus and sitting alone in completely dark rooms. (As is his right) So everyone at the academy is just like "oh yeah, that's our local weirdo. No, you'll never see him. If you want to talk to him, write a letter and give it to his cat."

Oh yeah, his cat who ate their homeroom teacher's soul and now carries around his ghost in its tummy.

How does he live without school support? Why, he just fishes in the ocean and eats whatever he catches! (Most likely not cooked) He's been doing this since freshman year!

(Red dorm students apparently took to fishing because of their lack luster cafeteria options)

Though, it's questionable if Jaden even needs to eat, because he can

survive in the cold vacuum of space without any scientific or magical protection

survive in oxygen-less environments (like space)

survive reentry into earth's atmosphere from orbit (again, unassisted)

go a whole week without eating and suffer no ill effects other than being a little peckish

After the finale of s3, he is part duel spirit, which might go a long way to explain his baffling continued survival. Duel spirits don't seem to need to eat or breathe, and exist just fine in the cold void of space (With the exception of Yubel but like. Physically they were fine being isolated in space for years.)

This tracks with the time Jaden got back from a daytrip to one of Jupiter's moons, got lost, spent a week starving in the forest, and became so delirious he started hallucinating. (Yes, a monkey took pity on him and tried to guide him back to food and water and Jaden thought it was a constantly shifting spectre of his friends who were all informing him he was losing his mind and talking like monkeys.)

But also in season 1 it's casually revealed that he keeps accidentally eating forks so maybe he's just always been Like That

Ojama Trio

Easily my least favorite rendering of these funny guys. It takes whatever is going on with the style in their monster cards and just shoots it through the roof. Like, why did they gotta do my guy Ojama Yellow like that? His face actively looks like its melting, and his eyestalks are just pathetic and sad. He doesn't even have his fat little belly!!!!!!! Skeletonized him. Ojama Black looks arguably the best here, and I don't really like his monster card version all that much, so this is saying something. I really feel like Ojama Green is the one just killing me though. His pose is funky but the rest of him??? Why is his tongue so shiny? Literally iridescent over here, along with his whole body it feels like? I can't stand him having the most rounded, bulbous shoulders ever that are completely incongruous with the rest of his arms. It's impossible to tell if he's meant to have a torso here or not, but it doesn't matter because I dislike his look here anyway. The styles used for the Ojama boys and the background is just so wildly different for no reason. The background could probably work on a different card, but I think the contrast with how horrifying these guys look and how busy the background is just makes it hard to look at in general.

Oh yeah when I say that I'm talking about Pearson 100%

It has been a little while but from what I remember, up through the Dark Signer arc they do a pretty decent job of leaving a lot of the deaths as heavily implied as possible so that you can still understand and put together that that's what's happening if you're actually paying attention. Like for example, they edit Carly falling into like the shadow realm mist and all,

but they still pretty strongly imply through her conversation with Misty after that whole situation that she died and even that Misty has died as well. They say it without specifically saying it, kinda thing.

And obviously they can't show Greiger being hanged on a saturday morning show the kids watch in America, but they literally show everything except the Spider shooting the web and it wrapping around his neck. Like you see him fall, you see the spider on the ceiling, and you see the little figure of him like bob up and down in the wide shot, like they show almost everything there. And them saying that Misty's brother "went missing" instead of that he died is nothing new, clearly because they did it with Aster's dad and even backpeddled on actually saying Seto and Mokuba's parents died in season 1 to saying they disappeared in season 3.

But the thing with Pearson that makes it the most egregious death censor to me is just how bad the quality of the censoring attempt is. Literally all they did was recolor the garage fire purple and have them claim that he "disappeared in a purple glow" like what the fuck is that? Like y'all ain't fooling anybody for a second with that. 🤦‍♀️

Like it's horrendously bad.

Also shoutout to when the dad falls into the like abyss and dies in the minecart section in Crash Town and when Jack and Crow show up with the authorities at the end they just throw in Jack being like "oh btw kids, they found your dad, he's gonna be a-okay! 😀👍" like no he ain't he died 😭

Yugioh GX season 1 is so funny when you watch with the knowledge that the protag has a secondhand bodycount that only the principal knows about.

The kid with a secondhand bodycount is applying to your school? Sure, but he only gets in if he makes the grade - but oh no, his train is late and your elitist teacher is trying to reject him before he even gets a chance? Well, maybe you can grease the wheels a bit.

Your elitist teacher is openly cackling about the matched he rigged to get the kid with a secondhand bodycount expelled? Do nothing, say nothing. Make a snippy comment when the kid with a secondhand bodycount wins anyway.

Need some top-tier duelists to protect the keys to unleashing the god cards lite? Okay, maybe the kid with a secondhand bodycount does make sense here. Or it could still be a terrible idea.

...You know what? Originally I left it here for the joke but actually no, I'm gonna pull out my tinfoil hat and talk about the other kid at DA with a dueling bodycount. No, not Hell Kaiser. Not the abandoned dorm stuff. Not any of the kids who hold seances to summon duel spirits for a winter horror episode or anything. I mean:

Motegi, AKA Belowski. The season 1 opponent who's introduced for a one-off episode and then left to cameo a couple times in the rest of the series, mostly in crowd shots. He's at DA as late as the series finale, at which point he's been a student for six years (Judai's first year is his fourth). And he might be there even longer! I'm not even sure he's even allowed to graduate, as opposed to being indefinitely contained at Duel Academia.

If Judai still had Yubel around when he started at Duel Academia, and they were found to be causing problems...would Judai be isolated the same way Motegi does? It's not like DA has the resources to actually handle their spirit problems, and yet the resources it does have make it a better place than most to keep them in the meantime.

GX has a lot of weird one-off episodes whose implications are never fully explored but the Motegi episode stuck with me, so much that I wrote a whole fic as a baby GX fan trying to imagine what his deal was. Now in the year 2k23 I'm looking at this and wondering what his situation could have suggested for Judai's fate if his spirit/dueling bodycount problem hadn't taken a couple more years to rear its head...
