EST : Welcome to the Laughing Cat House. This is our guild HQ.

CROW : Wow, this place is huge…!! You must have a lot of members…

EST : At the moment it's just the four of us. We bought the building from a reputed dealer at a very low price.

EMMA : Something with a history…?

KAI : Yeah, let's go with that.

CROW : What the hell is going on? The door just became a wall?!

GRANDFLAIR : What? The door's gone!

EMMA : Whoa!

KAI : Whoa! Hey, lady, are you okay?

EMMA : I'm fine, thank you. Um… Kai-san.

KAI : Just Kai. There's no need to get all formal, I'm really sorry about earlier. I shouldn't have gotten you guys caught up in our race.

EMMA : It's okay. Umm, Kai… Is this place haunted?

KAI : Hah, no, no, not in that sense.

GUI : There's still a lot of magic and trickery at work from the sorcerer who lived here before us. Lots of rare grimoires around here, too!!

CROW : Wow, so it's kinda like a ruin! Hey, I wonder what this dragon statue does--

SION : Don’t touch that if you don’t want to get hurt!

CROW : Crap, I touched it!

ITSUKI : …Gran. I just pulled a weird lever as hard as I could.

GRANDFLAIR : You guys!?

EMMA : The walls are closing in!

EST : I think you angered the building. If we don't do something, we'll get flattened.

EMMA : What did you say!?

EST : Maybe we can ask her for help? Ange!?

??? : Nya~!

EMMA : ( Wow, what a cute cat…! )

ANGE : Nyan~!

GRANDFLAIR : The shaking stopped…!

EST : Laughing Cat House lives up to it's name. Ange is the keeper and caretaker of these halls. Thank you.

ANGE : Nyan!

CROW : Ha ha. So Ange must be a wizard, too!

SION : She's much better than some single-celled organisms!

KAI : And just who do you think you’re talking about, huh!?

GUI : Aww… no more fighting~…… ?

KAI : Hey, Sion. Did you apologise to the lady?

SION : Hmph. They never would’ve got involved if you weren’t such an absent-minded simpleton.

KAI: You bastard!

GUI : Guys, please stop…….!

EMMA : (Gui looks like he's really got his hands full…..)

EST : Once again. We’re from the Magical Arts Guild, Magia Seminar. When you’d found us we had been practising our aerial techniques. I would like to formally apologise for any inconvenience.

With a flick of his wand, the cupboard opened, cups and plates dancing out of it, floating through the air and lining up neatly in front of us. Tea poured from the floating teapot and cookies seems to spontaneously burst into existence.

EVERYONE : Oh my goodness!

EMMA : I'm blown away….!!

KAI : Brilliant, isn't it? It's amazing how quickly you can do things with magic, isn't it?

EST : Please do dig in. Now about these black monsters that attacked us earlier, and the ones working with you.

EMMA : Well……

Ever since the Black Fairies first appeared, I'd been trying to figure out if it’d be more dangerous to explain everything to people, or nothing at all…

*FLASHBACK*

LANNES : Emma. Please be very careful telling people about the Black Fairies. If the wrong people find out about them, it could result in global unrest, perhaps chaos.

EMMA : Most people can't even see the Black Fairies…..

LANNES : Of course, we are not just sitting on our hands, the Federation President is now working with the royal families of each country to find the best way to protect the ministers and their people. I will be doing everything I can to get measures put in place as quickly as possible. I apologize for the inconvenience…..

*END FLASHBACK*

And now I was at a loss for where to even begin… Then suddenly… Professor Est got up from his seat and came back with a sheet of parchment in his hand.

EMMA : Is this ……?

EST : This is a request from the royal family of Sorciana. I'm investigating reports of anomalies in our country.

EMMA : What kind of anomalies?

*FLASHBACK*

INTEL : Actually, there have been a series of incidents like yesterday's all over the world.

*END FLASHBACK*

EMMA : (No way……)

Est doesn't speak beyond that. Perhaps he was trying to figure out the best course of action as well.

GRANDFLAIR : Emma. I think we can trust them.

EMMA : Gran?

GRANDFLAIR : I've been trying to place his name since we got here. Est… A genius of his generation… A name that… used to be all over the wizarding world.

GRANDFLAIR : Rumor had it, he'd retired long ago.

EST : …It has indeed been a long time since anyone spoke of me in such terms.

GRANDFLAIR : Earlier, while casting those time and sealing spells on Kai and Sion, he also used another spell on us at the same time, a technique that can only be performed by a very high-ranking magician. And then there is the fact he has mastery over both magic and sorcery.

EST : Oh, I'm really just a teacher nowadays.

GRANDFLAIR : And he's also of such high standing that he receives requests from the royal family directly. I think he'll be able to help us…

EMMA : Gran…Um… Yeah, okay… We'll tell you everything…

My Review of Konosuba

(Short for: KonoSuba - God's Blessing on This Wonderful World)

How did I get into this anime? As you all know, I’m being an absolute lazy-ass when it comes to Isekai animes and have only gotten into the recent hits as of 2019. I already finished the suffer edition and the struggle edition. Let’s check out the light-hearted, wonk-fest! But before that…

Let’s go back to the mid-1990s and rewatch the first episode of Yu Yu Hakusho. We all remember Yusuke Urameshi sacrificing his life in order to save a child about to be hit by a truck followed by being told that the child would have survived regardless if Yusuke interfered or not. So dude just wasted his fucking life for nothing! Let’s amp this trope up to 483 with the way our main lead in Konosuba dies. Kazuma Satou was on his way back home from purchasing a video game when he noticed a girl about to be hit by a car. He pushes her out of the way and yada, yada, yada he’s dead!

He is now in a limbo setting, standing before a goddess named Aqua who tells Kazuma that his death was absolutely meaningless. Not only would the girl have survived, it wasn’t even a car, it was a slow-moving tractor. And Kazuma didn’t get hit by the tractor, he suffered a heart attack due to shock, followed by pissing his pants, followed by doctors, family, and relations laughing at Kazuma’s humiliating experience. And then he dies!

Aqua tells Kazuma that he has two options. He can either go to Heaven or be transported to a fantasy world (much like a game) and try to defeat a demon king. Choosing the fantasy world, Kazuma is given the opportunity to take an item with him on his travels. Now at this point, Kazuma has been annoyed by this goddess’s attitude towards him and decides to be a dick. So Kazuma chooses Aqua to be with him on his journey. Sucks for Kazuma however, because Aqua is useless! And unlike the video games Kazuma’s used to, he and Aqua must do manual labor and pay off expenses in the first town. So they might be there for a while.

Kazuma ends up with two more members in his crew including a witch named Megumin that uses explosive magic and a masochistic crusader named Lalatina Dustiness Ford (or Darkness for short). But don’t get too excited! Megumin’s magic can only be used once a day, wiping away her energy. And while Darkness has a mean sword, she misses every time with it. So yeah, this is a rag-tag team of useless dopes. Let’s watch the wacky misadventures of Kazuma, Aqua, Megumin, and Darkness as they go on missions, drink until they puke, explode castles, and steal underwear.

Yes, Kazuma occasionally does this.

BETWEEN THE SUB AND THE DUB: Crunchyroll has been able to bless the masses with an English dub. Can’t let FUNimation have all the Isekai hits. So far it’s been alright and I’m hearing more Erica Mendez and Cristina Vee. All good things here! Plus it gives me a chance to hear the voices of Kazuma, whom up to this point I have minimal time listening to either person who plays him. And annoying as Aqua may be, Faye Mata does a really good job with that range Sora Amamiya set in the original. Here’s what you might recognize these folks from.

FAVORITE CHARACTER: Darkness is best girl, don’t at me!

SHIPPING (sorta): Can we just all agree that Darkness is just a sober version of Cheryl from Archer?

Whoever ends up with her will end up choking her either because she tells you to or she annoys you with her masochistic nature! I seriously do not know how you want me to turn this shipping discussion into anything other than a comment about a bitch getting choked.

ENDING TO SEASON ONE: Kazuma has been able to get a little good luck in his other world as he was finally able to move out of the stables and into a house with the rest of his crew. Although, it didn’t come easy! Then again, what has in this series? In the final episode of the first season, all of the adventures of the town were called to take on a scary foe. Up to this point, we’ve seen these guys take out mutant cabbages and an idiot dullahan. Today we’ve got…

A giant, mechanical spider!

Why do the stupidest stories always rely on a giant, mechanical spider? Kazuma and the rest were able to stop the spider from moving. However, this monstrosity is set to explode and the impact could take out the entire town. Darkness wants to repay the town for all it has done for her and her family. The adventurer men want to repay the town because of all the succubus taverns they love. And Kazuma just wants to continue his journey so he can take out the demon king. Now, because Megumin already used her explosion magic for the day, she’s down for the count. But she was able to do it a second time thanks to Kazuma transferring some magic from Aqua through his spell and with a little help from Wiz. The day is saved, Kazuma and his crew got a hefty reward, and then Kazuma is immediately charged with treason for sending the evidence to a higher up and it exploded.

Believe it or not, but a lot of these quests end with a giant middle finger to them. Almost like Curb Your Enthusiasm!

EPISODE 11: The special episode that followed came with some more misfortune for Kazuma. A trip to Wiz’s shop ends with a choker around Kazuma’s neck that’s going to strangle him in three days if his wish doesn’t come true. So to figure out what Kazuma’s wish is, Kazuma has all of these girls fulfill his greatest desires in the hopes of one of these humiliating tasks will release Kazuma from the choker.

As you can guess, because this is an OVA, it will be filled to the brim with degeneracy compared to the television series. Fuck yeah it was! Kazuma used this opportunity to use Wiz’s tits as comfy pillows, have Megumin play “Strip Rock/Paper/Scissors” with Yunyun, have Aqua fetch him food, and watch Darkness jiggle her breasts. Even when he thought he was at death’s door, he uses this special time to tell each girl with him at this dramatic moment that they are nothing more than tits and ass. All except for Aqua! No love for her. Not even a pity erection! So when the spell on the choker was released due to a simple wish, Kazuma was then killed by Aqua and quite possibly everyone else and Kazuma was sent back to the goddess chamber as he learned a powerful lesson.

Don’t ever do that again!

Damn…Kazuma died 3 times so far in 11 episodes. Subaru got you beat by a country mile. He’s probably looking at you like, “You damn, lucky dumbass. I got frozen, shanked, stabbed, sliced, maced, and eaten by bunnies”.

SEASON TWO: As I mentioned at the end of season one, Kazuma is charged with treason and usually that comes with a death sentence. Unfortunately for Kazuma, his unintentional crime was against this big, fat, smelly noble who has many higher-ups wrapped around his finger. The townspeople can’t really help him out otherwise they’d risk being charged as well. And you have a prosecutor wanting Kazuma’s head on a pike not only for the major charge, but for being a pervert. The writing is on the wall, Kazuma is screwed. However, thanks to Darkness (and her family lineage) she was able to take one for the team by saving Kazuma (for now) and have that big, fat, smelly noble do God knows what to her. Also, the kingdom repossessed a lot of things from Kazuma’s crew.

So they’re worse than “square one” at this point. They’re at “square -57” with how much debt they’ve all accumulated.

ENDING TO SEASON TWO: Things are starting to look up for Kazuma and his crew. They were able to abolish their debt, got the treason charges lifted, and they were able to gain back some respect around the village. So what better way to celebrate then to go on a bit of vacation. The gang decided to head off to another town for some rest and relaxation. Unfortunately, the town they spent their time off at is full of religious wackos. And what I mean by religious wackos, I mean WORSE than Jehova Witnesses, Evangelical Christians, and the Heaven’s Gate cult all rolled into one.

…Okay, I’m obviously embellishing here. I just really fucking hate all of those ones I just mentioned. This cult is so fucking annoying! At every turn they’re trying to convert Kazuma, Megumin, and Darkness into their fold.

Oh wait, it gets better! This cult worships the goddess Aqua! And of course our favorite idiot Aqua was using this to her advantage. That is until a priest didn’t believe her, starting a chain reaction with the townsidiots all leading up to them chasing Kazuma and crew out with pitchforks and fire. Apparently, Aqua did a big no-no by purifying the hot spring water and now it’s just regular water.

Unfortunately at that same time, a general to the dark lord was in area poisoning all of the water in this town. Yeah, this guy is serious trouble since he’s on a higher level than Wiz (back when she was working under the demon king). But he’s a slime and works with poison. In this world, Kazuma doesn’t stand a chance. Surprisingly, this battle went well (albeit Kazuma dying inside the slime), but we got to see Aqua at her baddest of ass. Now you’d think the town would be grateful to Kazuma and his team for ridding them of a demon king general. Hahaha, never trust religious nutjobs! They still found fault with Aqua purifying their hot springs and they were thrown out.

In the 11th episode (or second side-story), Kazuma thought he was meeting a new fan in town. So he regales her with tales of his expoditions to woo her. Turns out the girl is a new member of the local tavern and one of her jobs is to listen to useless adventurers to boost their morale. And this girl was totally not digging Kazuma. I think this hurt Kazuma more than all the times he’s died in this series.

MOVIE: We head off to the land where Megumin and Yunyun were born and raised. While there was some miscommunication into if the town and their families were in trouble to begin with, trouble sure found Kazuma and the gang once they arrived. Another general of the demon king ends up causing quite a stir in the town. Sylvia was extra hard to take down in this story. Just when you thought she was dead, she returns from death’s door and brings the poison slime from season two and the dullahan from season one to wreck havoc all across the land. Luckily, Kazuma, his crew, Wiz, Yunyun, and the rest of the townspeople were able to put an end to Sylvia and her cohorts.

But man, Kazuma got some really shitty deals in this movie. His trashy and perverted reputation isn’t any better. Megumin’s father wanted to kill him. Megumin’s mother locked Kazuma and Megumin in a room together in hopes of doing the nasty, was messed with by a chimera of two genders, and was killed in a gruesome way that even the angels had to throw up when they saw the state of Kazuma.

On a positive note, Megumin seemed to have grown a little with this adventure as she was even thinking of putting her explosive magic on hold and give a whirl at other options. But she still gave a giant explosion that’s worth 120 points.

Konosuba was amusing. Definitely worth a few chuckles! I know it won’t be for everyone as comedy in anime can often be hit-or-miss. But the combination of characters with many quirks, the animation, the setting, the tasks, and misunderstandings, you’ve got yourself an anime version of Curb Your Enthusiasm. So…yeah, not for everyone, hit-or-miss! But in the big five isekai animes, this one is a little more light compared to some of the others. Overlord can get quite gory. Shield Hero will anger any sane person to a point of madness. And Re:Zero is just a misery blanket! Konosuba is that light-hearted comedy where sometimes the main protagonist dies horrificly in battle, but will return like Kenny from South Park. So if Shield Hero and Re:Zero depress you, maybe you might need a break with the silly, zany antics of Kazuma’s crew in Konosuba.

Results may vary on your views of Aqua.

How Would the Premiere Nebula Girls Work in MagiReco?

(Please note, this is a random plug for my magical girl WIP, Premiere Nebula. For further context, you can search my #premiere nebula tag on my main blog, @curemoonlite .)

A lot of people seem to be thinking about how their magical girl OCs would translate to the MagiReco world in terms of gameplay, so I thought I’d follow the bandwagon! Some of these are exact reskins of existing MagiReco characters, while others have a bit more of a twist. (Because I pretty much imagine the video game versions of these guys working like existing MagiReco characters, also partially because I apparently don’t have the skills needed to be a game developer, lol.)

Valka/Actress Espoir (the troubled, yet powerful mentor character of the series): Flame element, Accele gorilla. Pretty much a Suzune reskin.

Io/Actress Chevalier (the rebellious, yet strangely kind member): Light element, Charge gorilla. Plays more like a light version of Tsukuyo in that giving her enough slots can make her way more formidable than she originally seems. (Inspired by me constantly underestimating Tsukuyos in Mirrors.)

Omega/Actress Bijou (the anxious newbie of the group): Light type, Kokoro reskin with a heal connect to make her more of a healing tank.

Koto/Actress Platine (the villain’s former bodyguard who ends up switching sides): Straight up a forest Kirika reskin.

Stelle/Actress Aerienne (the series’ main reformed villain): She’s a little more complicated, since she’s an air-type in my project (an element that doesn’t exist in MagiReco). So I’d probably make her a Dark-type, a little like Ren disk-wise, but with a big change. Her special ability is to drain magic, so her Magia would be a not-super-powerful one-enemy one...but one that damages the enemy’s MP by 20 or so. (Inspired by a particularly annoying challenge from the last event.)

Xue/Actress Ame (a magical shopkeeper with plenty of secrets): Okay, so she’s an ice-type in-series, but from her short description, you can probably see why I’d want to make her a Coordinator. I don’t know much about the JP Coordinators yet, but she’d probably be like New Year’s Mitama (since regular Mitama has way too many issues to be a good unit).

Xing/Actress Lueur (the captured rebel who worked with Espoir and Ame in the past): Basically a less powerful Flame-type Mami. She still has the same incredibly useful Connect, but her Magia still lowers her defense and she’s way more of a glass cannon (since she has a fairly weak body in-universe).

Phea/Actress Nymphea (the justice-seeking model/celebrity of the cast): Aqua-type, Yachiyo reskin. Espoir fits more into Yachiyo’s personality, but do you really think I could resist making the water-type model a Yachiyo reskin?

Kaine/Actress Epine (Espoir’s dark clone): Dark-type, excels at long-range attacks. I’m sorry to alarm you, but there’s no way of getting around this—Epine would be an Ashley Taylor reskin.

Due to my bad habit of starting new fanfiction WIPs (that at present are all Death Note because that series has rot my brain) before I finish them and staying away from older stories for too long, I have decided to use a wheel for the longer stories so that I’m not neglecting these stories for too long. Holiday-centric stories, one-shots, and one-shot collections (Precious Moments, Beasts and Beauties, and the Story Well [when I give it the overhaul it needs]) are not included since I feel those are in-between stuff (or should be; I just need to get better at writing chapters that are under 5000 words and in a timely manner. Also not included are original works because in all honesty, I need to prioritize those and I intend to do so by making an effort to go to the library more often (the bedroom is not a good office). Any new WIP ideas, even those that have nothing to do with Death Note (I’ve been itching to try my hand at Barbie and Miraculous Ladybug for awhile now) will be placed in the Story Well as pilot chapters, so that I can use them as a template when I free up the number of ongoing stories.

Current WIPs, in Order They Were Conceived/Started:

Death Note: Legacy--a semi-rewrite of Death Note 2017, using the versions of the characters appearing in that story as a template for original characters. It also takes characters/story elements from other Death Note franchise entries (particularly the Japanese film series) there’s also a dash of Wes Craven’s New Nightmare (but in reverse) in there as well since the OG Death Note cast is real and a good portion of them are still alive and trying to keep the truth about their existence and the existence of Death Notes and Shinigami under wraps, even if that is easier said than done. I’m working on an audio drama pilot with some friends, but that keeps hitting snags so I’ve decided to novelize it and write story tie-ins and also use the characters in other stories unrelated to this one (two of which will be seen later in the list). Right now, the pilot is all I have and it’s still in script form so transcribing it to fanfiction format may take awhile.

I Move the Stars For No One--LawLight fairy tale based very loosely off Rumpelstiltskin, where Light is an assassin who is ordered by Queen Misa to find and kill the person who arranged for her parents to be killed and makes a deal with L (who is King of the Goblins) to find proof that his target is guilty in exchange for his firstborn child. L’s probably nicer than he should be and Misa a little too reasonable (an occasional twinge of jealousy, but not bad enough for her to do something heinous), but I feel I’m too far into the story to change course (maybe a darker rewrite in the future, once this is finished) and we kind of need the fluff right now with the awful shit going on.

Another Divergence: The Kamihama Case--Death Note/Puella Magi: Madoka Magica crossover, influenced by the fanfic “As Time Diverges: The Mitakihara Case.” The original fic was written before Rebellion and the mobile game Magia Record (I’m still a bit salty about the US server being shut down after a little over a year) and as far as I know the author is no longer online. So I decided to kind of continue the story and include these newer franchise entries. I’m probably going to have to rewatch Madoka Magica and catch up on the Magia Record anime (and try to hunt down translations of the game screenshots since I can’t read Japanese [which is part of the reason I haven’t bothered getting a VPN to play on the JP server]) before I continue this (currently, all there is is the prologue), but I do want to continue this since I like the characters in Puella Magi and I liked the rapport L had with the original five main characters and wonder how well he would have gotten along with the new cast members.

Cabin In The Woods AU--horror movie AU where Light is a Final Guy who has survived multiple horrors, has discovered that an organization is behind it all, and, with the help of other of survivors, plans to take down the organization. Unbeknownst to him, not everyone in his support group is human, not all of them have good intentions, and a good portion of them are obsessed with making him theirs. I’m actually planning to rewrite this since it’s currently just two short stories when the main story should be a long story and the additional stories should be extra stuff (mini-sodes, POV fics, and alternate endings). I won’t delete or ophan what I have, I’ll just mark them as “Old.”

My Stepdaughter Might Be Kira--currently my longest (and most popular, with now over 100 kudos [woo!]) ongoing story, a family dramedy where L is looking for Kira and dating Light Yagami, but things get complicated because all the clues point to Light’s daughter as either withholding vital evidence that would help L solve the Kira case or actually being Kira. And Mizuki’s attitude toward L is not helping her case. Mizuki was created for Legacy as a supporting character and she is the first one I felt comfortable using in other Death Note stories since she has the least amount of surprises/spoilers tied to her character in Legacy (in the outline in my head, who her parents are [Light and Misa] and her role on the Task Force are revealed in the episode she appears in). But with that being said...

The Interloper--the most recent one started (though no chapters have been published yet), influenced by d3adendsinmymind’s “We All Fall,” where Rem decides to give Gelus’ Death Note to someone besides Misa in an effort to keep her safe...and said someone decides she wants to fuck up Ryuk’s shit when she learns that he’s trying to frame someone (Light Yagami) for murder all because he refused the Death Note. And, while she is against Kira, she isn’t going to play nice with L either since she has her own issues with him. This is the first time I’m using someone from Legacy that isn’t Mizuki and, just to bite the bullet, it’s the one that I’ve been hesitant to use most because she has quite a few spoilers tied to her. What those spoilers are? You’ll probably find out soon enough. For now, all you need to know is that she goes by Wyn and she’s kind of the inverse of Mizuki.

Sushi-Zanmai, Laid-Back Antarctica, and the Yakuza JRPG: An April Fools' Round-Up

  Lots of the stories we get in the Crunchyroll Newsroom already sound like they must be jokes. (Remember the two guys arrested for Gundam crimes? Or, you know, just about anything related to Pop Team Epic?) But once a year, anime and game producers bring out their best material to, if not fool fans, at least entertain them. So, as April Fools' Day ends in Japan and get into full swing here, we're doing a round-up of some of the best surprises, jokes, and tricks to come from your favorite studios.

    Prince of Tennis fans got a surprise this morning when charismatic character Keigo Atobe hijacked girl-targeted manga app Manga Mee. The collaboration with series creator Takeshi Konomi featured new art of Atobe, but the collaboration doesn't stop there. When April 1 is over, app users will still have access to 150 free issues of The Prince of Tennis until May 30! (Source)

    The first of many "I wish this actually existed" entries comes in the form of Bungo Stray Dogs Academy, which resets the story of the series in high school. The scene depicts Atsushi Nakajima, recently accepted into the Armed Student Council for saving a member, being lured by Tatsuhiko Shibusawa into the school's Apple Suicide Club.

  While Bungo Stray Dogs Academy isn't coming anytime soon, a third season of Bungo Stray Dogs will be kicking off on April 12. (Source)

    A newly-released key visual for Kunihiko Ikuhara's Sarazanmai shows a major change in direction. Instead of turning into kappa, the main characters of the series will turn into... sushi chefs? In order to return to their regular school lives, they will have to collect the shirikodama of sushi-grade tuna. The joke art has us hungry for sushi, but we're expecting the show to premiere as originally planned on April 11. (Source)

      Laid-Back Camp and A Place Further Than the Universe updated their respective websites with art swapping out their shows' characters — resulting in "A Place Further Than Yamanashi" and "Laid-Back Antarctica." The Antarctic expedition probably deserves some laid-back camping at this point... and we're pretty sure Rin, Nadeshiko, and friends could take on the snowy terrain! (Just make sure to bundle Chikuwa up!)

    Looking forward to the new Made in Abyss movie? Too bad, you'll watch Marulk's Everyday Life and like it.

  All joking aside, this key visual is absolutely adorable. We wouldn't mind seeing Marulk and Ozen in their own little mini-spinoff. And for any fans still worried, the creators of Made in Abyss have confirmed that, yes, the movie you're expecting is still what will be screening in January 2020. (Source)

    In a move tested out by Hulu several April Foolses ago, the official YU-NO: A Girl Who Chants Love at the Bound of This World website has gone vintage for the day. The temporary downgrade takes the site back to the look of the Internet in 1996, when the visual novel first came out. They've really gone all out, too — with web ring and "top 100" site banners at the bottom of the page, bouncy GIFs, and blue link borders around the images. (Source)

    Magia Record players received new challenges at the hands (paws?) of Kyubey thanks to the special release Circular Logic Sports Day. Those who challenged the new app chose from 11 puella magi (the game's lead 10, plus the cartoony Madoka-sensei) to participate in minigames: "Dokidoki Foot Race," "Kyubey Toss," and "Witch Capture the Flag."     Yakuza fans hungry for info on the next game will likely jump at this super-secret sneaky footage of the new title in progress. Titled "ryu_new_0401" and stealthily taken over a shoulder, the new footage shows a team setup in the style of turn-based JRPGs. While a few news sites are still up in the air as to whether this is real, we're calling it as a very good fool.

  Speaking of video games, this year's April Fools' Day gave us a one-two punch of creators going turbo in their own titles. PlatinumGames made this glorious high-end trailer for business simulator Chief Executive Omni-Weapon Ken-Ichi (note: you may have to click through to watch it on YouTube):

    And TEKKEN 7 director Katsuhiro Harada has announced that, "by popular demand," he will be stepping into the ring to play his part in settling the Mishima feud. We know it's a joke, but can we please have this as DLC?

    For Final Fantasy fans, there's a commercial for the new Omega smart home assistant. He'll help you with your homework, tell you the latest basketball scores, and remind you that you are an inferior being who exists only to be slaughtered on the battlefield manage your playlist!

    Finally — at least for this round-up — Toho weighs in with an appropriately kaiju-sized gag. A new teaser shows what is allegedly the return of Jet Jaguar on the big screen in 2020. If nothing else, at least we get a glimpse or two of the mecha rendered in CG.

Hey so I saw you talk about Escaflowne are there other anime that you like and would recommend?

I mean...yeah but I’m what the kids call a “filthy casual” when it comes to anime. I don’t really watch a lot anymore. I think last year I watched like two or three? I can recommend what I like but I’m just gonna warn you now you’re in store for a lot of Magical Girl anime. Read for more if you dare.

So I feel like the first and most obvious anime I would recommend is, of course, Sailor Moon. Now while I don’t normally care for anime that are over a minimum of 13 and a maximum of 30 Sailor Moon is one of the few exceptions. Stacking up at 200 episodes the series has four seasons and overall it’s pretty damn great. Yes there is filler and yes it is a bit dated but people don’t give Sailor Moon enough credit. Our main character Usagi begins the series a little self-absorbed and a huge cry baby but ends with the biggest heart out of everyone and sacrifices her life, more than one occasion I might add, to save the world and those she loves. Plus everyone has a Scout that they can relate to (Neptune is bae) and everyone has their favorite arc (Saturn/Mistress 9 or Nehelenia arc). And while people complain about the filler those episodes are used to round out all of the characters and give each girl their moment to shine. Unlike Sailor Moon Crystal but I’m not getting into that rant today. I prefer the japanese dub because that’s all I really had since the DiC dub was all we had in the States at the time but there is a new dub from Funimation that is very faithful to the original script so whichever you prefer on that end. We also have two movies which are great

Another 90s classic would be Cardcaptor Sakura. I unapologetically love this anime despite it not having aged well in terms of writing. Sakura Kinomoto is our main character who accidently releases the mysterious Clow Cards and she must find and capture the cards or else they’ll wreak havoc. Season 1 is all about capturing the cards and Season 2, the better season imo, is about Sakura becoming the new master of the cards. So the writing is a bit...problematic and this is mostly due to CLAMP’s, the writers for the show and manga, wanting to take the concept of love and seeing it from multiple angles in all of their works. Cardcaptor Sakura is no exception...however there is a lot, and I do mean a lot, of relationships that show age gaps between two characters. Sakura has her crush on her brother’s friend Yukito she’s ten and he’s in high school, Sakura’s dad was a fresh out of college high school teacher when Sakura’s mother was like sixteen or seventeen and they got married after she graduated, and then there’s Rika, Sakura’s classmate, who has a crush on their homeroom teacher and it’s just...sigh. There is a good episode in Season 2 when Yuki finally breaks it to Sakura that she’s way too young for him, besides him having eyes only for her older brother, Toya, and Sakura realizes that she doesn’t love Yuki in the way that she thought before and it’s really good. Nothing is sexualized, everything is cute, and the characters are allowed to feel and express themselves which is you know great. There is also two movies as well as the sequel to the show the Clear Card Arc but I don’t recommend the sequel mostly because nothing happens and it’s mostly used to show how cute Sakura and her boyfriend are...which is a lot I’m not gonna lie they are incredibly cute and I love them. That being said the rest of the series is full of low stakes questions not being answered and a cliffhanger ending and who knows when that’ll get resolved (I’m not bitter I promise). So yeah stick with the OG anime. There was no redub of the show so I would just recommend the Japanese dub.

Revolutionary Girl Utena is one of my favorite anime of all time. Seriously when I’m super depressed I binge the whole show. This show has a lot going on symbolically and that’s like crack to me. I love deciphering hidden meanings in shows and Utena has that in spades. The show subverts a lot of tropes and gives me so many feels. The show is about Utena Tejo who dresses in the school’s male uniform instead of the girl one. She is a tomboy, good a sports, and pretty decent with a sword come to find out. She duels one of the student council members for Anthy Himemiya the Rose Bride. Anthy, who is just another student at the school, is passed around from duelist to duelist and is treated however her owner sees fit. After winning Utena treats Anthy like a friend and protects her from other duelists so that Anthy can be free to make her own decisions. It’s so good. Like really good. My main complaints come from the loooong walking scenes to the dueling area that we go through every episode but honestly it’s worth. The characters are well written, not all likeable but well written, the animation is pretty, the jokes from the gossip girls are dumb and I love them, and the overall story is just great. We even get queer characters. There is a movie retelling the events of the show but it’s...well...different. I would stick to the anime.

So I you know how I mentioned I like symbolism in my shows? Well one thing that I really like is when it symbolism that involves fairy tales. Princess Tutu while funny when you say the title is another great show with darker things going on in the background than one would assume. In the show we follow Duck, yeah that’s her name, an actual duck that transforms into a young girl due to the machinations of the mysterious Drosselmeyer the author of the fairy tale we are in. This anime deals with ballet which I love and uses dance and music to help Duck purify the hearts of those who have been taken over by darkness. This show gets a bit dark over the course of the series but the hope and light that comes from it by the end is so worth it. 

Ok this is the last magical girl anime I promise. Puella Magia Madoka Magica is amazing, dark, subversive, and soul crushing. I love this show, again, for the symbolism, the characters, the music, the animation, and for how much it makes me cry. There are a lot of allusions to Faust and things get darker well before they get happier but they do get happier by the end of the series. Unless you watch the sequel movie The Rebellion Story and then you’re just left with bitterness and tears. The show was an actual show but then was later split into three movies, just the same show with more details in the animation, but personally the show was just fine with me. 12 episodes long you could get through it in a weekend. Just make sure to bring some tissues along and plenty of comfort food. 

So if you have an interest in RPGs and fantasy but don’t want anything to serious or heavy I would recommend Slayers. In this show we follow Lina Inverse one of the strongest mages of her time and we watch her blow up a lot of things. By episode 2 she gains her first, and constant, follower Gourry Gabriev a dimwitted but talented swordsman who is very sweet and endearing. This show doesn’t really have a plot except Lina and Gourry trying to make money so they can eat and Lina stumbles upon a quest where hopefully she’ll get some gold. This show is mostly an action comedy and boy does it deliver. This show had five incarnations and I still haven’t seen all of it in it’s entirety but it’s pretty great and has a lot of memorable characters. 

 If you want to watch something to mellow you out that also gives you that folklore and fantasy feeling then you should watch Mushishi. We follow Ginko, a mysterious white haired man, who studies and deals with Mushi, spirits...sorta. The show is set in the Edo era...I think and it really gives off this folklore and almost ghost story vibe. Like this would be stories that your great-great grandpa would tell you about when there weren’t so many cities and everything was trees and fields and there was a strange magic to everything. This show is by no means scary. I was really zen throughout most of it. Travis Willingham does great as Ginko and his cadence really helps with that mellow feeling. 

 Romeo x Juliet is what I would recommend anyone that is interested in a love story with a bit of war, destiny, and a whole lot of Shakespeare. This show is set in Neo-Verona which is a slightly futuristic but at the same time not. Lord Montague, Romeo’s father, has murdered Juliet’s family, the Capulets, and rules over the city with an iron fist. Juliet is a badass sword-wielding vigilante and Romeo is a soft cinnamon roll who needs to be protected at all costs. I really loved this retelling of the the classic story and I really hate Romeo and Juliet for reasons I’m not gonna get into as this list is already so long. The interpretations of the characters are different and unique and that alone is worth watch. If you know anything about Shakespeare you’ll catch the references to all of his other works, the bard himself even pops up in the show which was wonderful, and the even include several scenes where people speak in iambic pentameter, especially Ophelia. My only complaint about this show is the main musical theme which is “You Raise Me Up” by popular by Josh Groban and as a person who really doesn’t like Groban this was almost a deal breaker for me. Thankfully the song is sung by women in English and in Japanese and, when used appropriately, it really made the show feel as dramatic and epic as the original play. 

So if you like Dynasty Warriors, hyperactive cute boys, explosions, adorable father-son moments, a rivalry that borderlines on romantic relationship, and a bad guy who literally travels with ominous music and a death storm then Sengoku Basara is for you. Ok so when I first saw this show I was surprised how quickly I fell in love with it. Like it’s so stupid with how campy and action packed it is and I loved every second of it. We follow historical Japanese soldiers and fighters in their quest to defeat Oda Nobunaga the Demon King. Like most of these people actually existed but we gave them elemental superpowers and pumped up the action to the extreme. I don’t have much else to say except it was a wild and fun ride from start to finish. 

And I think that I’m gonna end this with Fate/Stay Night:Unlimited Blade Works. Having seen the original Fate/Stay Night and Fate/Zero I can say that UBW has enough from both series for people to find something to love. Also you don’t need to have knowledge of any of the other works to get into this series as it is a retelling of the original story. You say Fate/Stay Night was originally a visual novel with three routes. The Fate Route, the Unlimited Blade Works Route, and the Heaven's Feel Route. The first route is considered the “best route” as pretty much everyone survives it, the second there are some casualties but overall it is the actual best route because one of our main characters, Shirou, isn’t a complete idiot this time around, and the third and final route is super depressing and holy shit who wrote this? UBW is full of action, historical figures...again, great animation, great fight scenes, and a pretty good story. 

And that’s my ten sort of broad animes that I would recommend. I think that you’ll probably find something that you like in all of this especially if you like magical anime.
