Transformers: Mosaic #515 - "Cash & Kalis"

wada sez: Gutcruncher’s profession as a grave-robber stems back to his original Tech Specs. This whole strip ties into the Marvel UK storyline “City of Fear!”; like in that story, the Duocons are depicted more as triple changers. Ed Pirrie has drawn Bulkhead into the crowd in the penultimate panel. Preview, inks, and clean colors below.

@symphonicdemise for the ➳ spoil of war ask
Apparently some bot wasn’t aware of the whole alternate universes situation. They also didn’t seem to listen when he tried to explain that he was the ‘nice’ Overlord. Comparatively of course. Overlord had been quite shocked when, while enjoying a drink out, the evening had turned to one of utter chaos. Unfortunately he was already quite drunk, the bar brawl ending quickly with him face planting in front of the leader of the group, restrained and shoved into a transport.
The mech was obviously a Decepticon loyalist, carrying on about some list or other, incredibly durable restraints strapping Overlord to the wall of the transport so at least he wasn’t about to fall over.
At some point they put a blindfold on him and obnoxiously enough, stuffed a gag in his mouth. He tried to bite of course, severing a measly finger but not feeling much better for it as he was soon silenced, gag shoved into his mouth. There was retaliation of course, punches thrown, plating dented. It was worth it.
. . .
::Commander Tarn. Excuse my unsolicited contact but I have something you may be interested in. A mech you have been pursuing for some time. Overlord.:: The Decepticon practically vibrates, so excited to be able to hand over such a prize.
::I trust you’d like to handle him yourself, commander?:: He sent through his co-ordinates. Oh he could smell the power and station this would grant him. Gutcrusher, the bots name was. He’d taken the name in respect to Gutcruncher, trying to live up to the name and throwing his weight around rather pitifully but lacking the strength of the more powerful Decepticon. This was the perfect opportunity then to make a name for himself. Everyone would know that it was Gutcrusher who felled Overlord!

One criticism of IDW2 that has confused me is "everyone is a cop or a senator" which has never been true, even in the beginning.
A few characters off the top of my head that aren't cops or senators at all: Rubble, Guage, Wheeljack, Gears, Huffer, Lancer, Cyclonus, Shockwave, Greenlight, Codexa, Slipstream, Shadow Striker, Flamewar, Nautica, Road Rage, Swindle, Trickdiamond, Froid, Geomotus, Landmine, Astrotrain, Ratchet, Hoist, Perceptor, Glyph, Tapout, Gutcruncher, Flatline, and more.
This list ignores all of the characters who aren't cops but some might consider "cop adjacent" like Megatron's guards or soldiers/generals like Pyra Magna and her troop. Also ignoring characters who are in the political sphere but whose exact titles I can't remember right now like Hound.
There's a wide variety of characters in IDW2. Yes, there are quite a few cops and senators, but that's not the whole cast.

Transformers Spotlight #3: Hot Rod
Read Date: July 15, 2023 Cover Date: November 2006 ● Writer: Simon Furman ● Art: Nick Roche ● Colorist: Liam Shalloo ● Letterer: Robbie Robbins ● Editor: Dan Taylor ●
**HERE BE SPOILERS: Skip ahead to the fan art/podcast to avoid spoilers
● oh goodness… Dealer… get that ‘bot to Ratchet, stat! ● aww the smile! ● O_O didn’t see that coming ● 👏👏👏👏👏
Synopsis: Hot Rod has always been something of a daredevil, pulling of stunts that few other Autobots have the courage — or sanity — to try. On his latest escapade, he's hitching a ride on a passing meteoroid on a one-way trip to an icy moon. After all, he rationalizes as he hits the atmosphere, the more insane it is, the less inclined any Decepticon will be to try and stop him! Hot Rod deploys his on-board null field to arrest his descent, but even so, the rough landing knocks him unconscious, and he as he lies in the snow he can't help but flash back to his first mission as a field commander — and his first failure…
In the silicon steppes of the planet Ki-Aleta, Hot Rod and his unit, consisting of Download, Gizmo, Backbeat, and Dealer, power through the badlands until an eager Hot Rod announces that they've reached their destination: a gigantic stone tomb known only as the Omega Bunker. Hot Rod's team establishes a perimeter, sets up a series of decoys, and deploys some bore drones as their leader lays down the mission specifics: the building holds the enigmatic trinket known only as the "Magnificence," an enigmatic artifact guarded by the immensely powerful stone golems called the Omega Guardians; the only way that the Autobots will be able to get their hands on the Magnificence without provoking the wrath of the Guardians will be through speed and subterfuge.
Regaining consciousness, Hot Rod takes in his surroundings. He's made it to Styx, the harshest of the Decepticon penal colonies, and, according to Autobot intelligence, the one most difficult to infiltrate. Hot Rod has another trick up his sleeve, however, and deploys a viral carrier wave to covertly scramble the base's security system. Within, warden Gutcruncher, reports on the gaps in his monitor feed… unaware that these gaps are specifically timed to allow Hot Rod to pass through the malfunctioning areas before they return to normal. Hot Rod slips through gap after gap, taking advantage of blanks in the cameras and redirected security patrols and makes his way to cellblock Z-lateral, hoping to find redemption for his earlier mistake…
Having set up their decoys, the Autobots swing into action: Gizmo uses his holomatter generator to distract the Omega Guardians with an illusory copy of the Autobots. The Omega Guardians are fooled by the trick and lumber into battle while Hot Rod and Download slip into a tunnel created by the bore drones, following the opening deep into the Omega Bunker.
It doesn't take long before the two Autobots emerge in the depths of the temple, where they are confronted with the Magnificence. At Hot Rod's urging, Download sets about deactivating the device's energy shield to safely retrieve it when a terrified Gizmo cuts in, warning his leader that the holomatter generator has been destroyed — and that the Guardians are coming for them! Hot Rod yells for his team to abort the mission and fall back, but it's no use: Gizmo is blown to bits by the Guardian onslaught. Within the Magnificence's antechamber, Download cheerfully reveals that he's deactivated the Magnificence's containment shield… only to be annihilated by a pair of concealed Omega Guardians.
In the present, Hot Rod's virus has wrought havoc on Styx; as the virus works its way through the system, it deactivates every cell door in the complex, and, as the prisoners riot, Hot Rod takes advantage of the confusion to don a hologram projector, disguising himself as a Decepticon. As the Decepticon commanders are safely evacuated to an orbital relay point, Hot Rod picks his way through the Z-lateral prison block before finally reaching his target of interest. Huddled in the back of his cell is a terrified Dealer, last surviving member of Hot Rod's Ki-Aleta mission…
As Hot Rod escapes with the Magnificence, he receives a transmission from Dealer, who reports that he's been pinned down by a Decepticon ambush and needs Hot Rod's help. Hot Rod is momentarily torn — but ultimately, his desire to help his squadmate is overruled by his optics-only orders: that safely retrieving Magnificence takes priority over everything else. Hating himself, Hot Rod abandons Dealer to his fate, escaping down a secret backup tunnel and blaming himself for the loss of his teammates all the while…
In the present day, Hot Rod uses another holographic disguise on Dealer and the disguised Autobots make a break for it, reaching the prison's landing pad in time to reach the last outbound ship. Hot Rod drops his disguise just long enough to take out the two guards, and, with Dealer in tow, makes a clean getaway. As the ship hits lightspeed, Hot Rod mulls on his lone wolf tendencies: since Ki-Aleta, he's always preferred to run solo, but if he can make amends for his past mistakes, then maybe he can become a team player again.
At a nearby Autobot space station, Hot Rod tries to apologize to Dealer for leaving him behind, but Dealer just smiles: he's just happy that Hot Rod risked so much to come back for him, and all he wants is for them to be friends…
…but when Hot Rod is gone, Dealer — a Decepticon double agent! — partakes in a secret conversation with his contact Banzaitron. Dealer had compromised the entire operation from the start: he'd sabotaged the holomatter generator to eliminate the other Autobots, and his phony transmission of a "Decepticon ambush" was a deliberate ploy to lure Hot Rod and the Magnificence into Decepticon hands. Dealer assures Banzaitron that Hot Rod still trusts him, and, with enough manipulation, Hot Rod will trust him enough to reveal the location of the Magnificence! Banzaitron laughs — the duplicitous Dealer is so good at his job, he remarks, that perhaps he should call the spy "Doubledealer"…

Dear Vector Prime, Most of the members of the Maximals and Predacons have names reminiscent of their alternate forms, assuming they took the names after taking their alternate forms. What were the pre-Earth names of some of the Maximals and Predacons?
Dear Nominative Nitpicker,
The names of some Cybertronians vary over the universe; for instance, Predacons originally named Gnashteeth, Galavar, Gutcruncher, Gristle, Gorelock, and Geo have all assumed the name "Megatron". Some further examples are:
Rhinox has previously been known as Bulkhead, Liftor, and Sentinel Minor.
Tarantulas has been Mesothulas, Chopsaw, and Noisemaze.
Wolfang was known as Scavenger, Snarl, and Wolf.
Skold has been Stockade, Shieldron, or Slug.
Tracking down the exact names used before reaching Earth can be difficult, especially as many were in fact known by names like "Cheetor" or "Scorponok" even then.

I keep trying to say something about this but then I look at it again and just crack up all over again. I love the “act natural” flavor of false innocence so much.

Character models for the Sprung and Lipoles from the recent Life on Earth comic.
Sprungs are peaceful herbivores that feed on Cybertronic plant matter when they live on the surface. When burrowing underground in drill mode, they soak up subterranean Energon deposits for nourishment. They are a breed of Insecticon and are docile enough that some Autobots keep them as pets. Wild Sprungs are among a breed of self reproducing Transformers that don’t require the Allspark. Every 100 vorns, they migrate to the spawning grounds at the Manganese Mountains where they lay dozens of CyberEggs in underground nests. The young burrow out after soaking up enough Energon to migrate back to their habitat in Lower Petrohex. When the War broke out, some were reprogrammed to be scouts, burrowing underground at Decepticon encampments. Sprungs are a plentiful race and a favorite treat of predators. Repugnus’ Firebug Beast Mode instincts also enjoy Sprungs as a delicacy, preferably deep fried with an oil dip. The races’ plentiful nature and Energon soaking habits were a concern for Nominus Prime, and tried to enforce selective breeding programs to stave off energy costs during the effects of The Shattering.
Lipoles are a breed of Bolt Bat that are difficult to tame. They are a chaotic breed of mechanimal that do as they please and travel in large flocks. While they posses solar panels on their wings to generate Energon via solar power, they are more than capable to draining Energon from unsuspecting Transformers. They appear to be a natural predator of Cryocondors, thus Soundwave isn’t particularly fond of them for Laserbeak’s sake. Like Sprungs, they reproduce without requiring the Allspark, and when the time comes, flocks migrate and Transform into torpedo mode to blast away obstructions to make nests.
Their ability to survive their own detonations was studied by the Decepticons and appropriated into Heavycons like Clobber, Blackout and Gutcruncher.
Some have been successfully tamed and used as Deployers by Decepticons in the war. Starscream’s friend Hellbat famously wore his as his chest plate, which Deployed as a Blaster and an attack beast.
