Occasum: The Setting Sun

She is a whirlwind of a woman. She moves with purpose, intention, each step strong and clear as they lead her. She is so much faster than she looks. Always so underestimated by her short stature and her dizzy, swaying style. To those she passes she is a blur, not inhumanly so, but she does not linger long enough for her image to process within their minds. Not dancing around today. The scent left in her wake is thick, the sweet powdery pink of bubble gum and cotton candy, so strong you might think she had come from a carnival. You wouldn’t exactly be wrong. The breeze carries it away and with it any lingering thoughts of the youth and whatever mission had brought her this way.

It’s not an easy journey. Not without help. But she had so much to say, so many words to work into the right order so that when she came his way she could keep her mind on track instead of giving into the comfort of limbs and lips and bliss. By sea, it had been long. She kept linking the facts in order, scribbling all that she had seen into an empty book. By cart, it had been tedious. She pondered the meanings, the creatures, the beings. By foot, it had been exhausting. She was alone to rehearse what would surely sound like madness to anyone else. But she had this mountain trail to herself.

The mists part and in the distance it is clear, a modestly ramshackle house full of life, a garden with glittering fireflies all night, and her destination after so many days away. The gate was creaky, the fenced yard littered with a small assortment of toys, the windows casting warm light into the night. She could smell the herbs that would need tending, the soapy scent of freshly laundered linens hanging on a line, and the smoke from their wood burning stove. Now she could slow. Now she could catch her breath. Now she was home.

Mrs. Crumple took her bag. Uriel appraised her for injury. Roxy was busy brushing her teeth but she shouted a greeting to her aunt as she passed. John, asleep in his and his cousin’s bedroom, got a tender touch and a good night tuck. And, little baby Rory, cooing sweetly in her cradle, was lifted into her mother’s arms and gently kissed. Only, one was missed.

She found him in the warmth of the sunroom, a dark, sacred Night waiting in her sanctum. Their smiles were mirrors of twin delight. She could breathe him once again. She could finally feel safe. Their lips locked and their bodies fit together in perfect harmony, a moment where every single trouble she had plaguing her mind had melted away. And when they surfaced for air she dropped back so he could take her tiny jaw in his massive hand. So they could be lost in each other's eyes. So that Athen could break the still with what she had learned.
