Hi yes, aware I haven't posted on tumblr in months, but June was just busy, and July was my first proper Eurotrip!! Went around Portugal, Spain, Italy, Austria, Belgium, and then back out again through Spain! ~Momentous~ Highlight reel that is in no way comprehensive:
Favourite food(s): Topfenstrudel in Salzburg, prosciutto/mozzarella in Venice, chili/lime plantain chips in Barcelona, fresh anchovies in Cinque Terre, raspberry donut in Lisbon, churros in Madrid, seafood paella in BCN, and honestly just some plain old hangover bacon/eggs in Venice while I slowly woke up after the festival going on (but yeah topfenstrudel was #1, when I took a bite I think I said something to effect of "are you kidding me")
Favourite drink: Love a bitter orange cocktail, so Italy was all about aperol spritzes, negronis, and americanos <3 Bonus points for the liter-sized beer steins in Salzburg too
Favourite hike: Cinque Terre with @enbouton! I just tried to keep up. Our Toledo hike was a close second though! Don Quixote realness
Most exciting moment: sitting in a square in Venice waiting for my best friend from when I lived in Korea to arrive, literally vibrating with excitement at seeing her again after 8 years omg (she lives in Australia but was in Europe too around the same time, and we made it WORK!)
Best tour: did a Sound of Music bike tour in Salzburg and it was an absolute delight. So was the beergarden date and [redacted] with my tour guide lmao heyo (context, we were extremely clickety from the get go much to the amusement of the rest of the tour group so it was like 'let's meet up when you're not literally at work lol'. He took me to a proper Austrian beer garden the next night and honestly, date for the ages lol, yay for fleeting love in foreign countries ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ )
Most serendipitous planning/non-planning: booked my first night in Venice completely unaware at the time there was a huge festival happening, and was on the right island for the fireworks. Also my timing worked out that I got to do Barcelona with a friend from home so that was fun too
Best museum: this glorious cathedral in Toledo, and also the Hergé museum just outside Brussels
Best restaurant: first proper dinner out with my friends in Venice at this restaurant by the Ponte dell'Accademia. The pic 3rd down on the left was the view and we ordered everything. *Runner-up was this fantastic little diner in Madrid that had churros and horchata and we ended up going twice lol
Travel bloopers: Italian rail strike and heat rash in Spain lol #attractive Oh and got screwed by one booking website lol but I'm hoping to get that refunded. Also my flights out to Europe were screwy!
Best travel eavesdropping: I overheard a waiter in Brussels speaking to an older woman who was very anxious about ordering something a specific way I think, and he replied in French "Madame, this is your house, order how you like" and I just thought that was a very classy thing to sayyyy
Most relaxing day: had a picnic/laundry/shopping/movie day in Padova and it was just the ticket. Also by the time I hit Barcelona I was pretty wiped out and made the executive decision to wait in no lines or do any busy tourist attractions in favour of beach time, and that was WISE
Travel tears: Saying goodbye to Aussie friend before my train to Vienna and watching her disappear back into the Venetian throng
Favourite outfit bought: your girl was backpacking so space was Limited, but got a little orange dress in BCN, a white/green blouse in Padova, and some silky trousers in Toledo I'm still summoning up the nerve to wear here. Oh and a raincoat my Brussels airbnb host offered to sell me for 20 euros and I'm pretty sure it was worth a LOT more than that lol but it was very chic!
Wardrobe win: this lightweight long black skirt with convenient leg slits for walking. Came in clutch many times
Wardrobe fail: My sneakers were great at first but the 5 terre hike cracked something in the soles and and I started getting agonizing blisters. By the time I hit Salzburg I hobbled off the train right into an h&m, bought the first affordable pair of sneakers I saw, and tossed the old ones out
Prettiest city: maybe Florence just because there seemed to be something unreasonably beautiful everywhere you turned your head. This could apply to most of Italy though.
Best vibes: Something about Salzburg!!! Mountains, opera, amazing food, cute tour guides, and misty skies...I'd have stayed longer if I could have instead of pushing on to Brussels, but my next bookings weren't refundable. Brussels was cool in its way but honestly just reminded me a lot of Montreal lol. Also Toledo had a nice relaxing atmosphere, I'd like to go back and spend more time in Spain for sure
Best miscommunication: the guy across from me on my train to Padua who saw me reading Moby Dick and asked "Are you reading that because of the whale?"... After some confusion he explained that the book apparently features in the movie The Whale lmao but I thought he was asking if I was reading it for the character of the whale?? asdfgh. I was like "...yeah I've heard the whale is great" lmao.
Best sleep: hand to god it was my party hostel in Barcelona lol. Rowdy downstairs, super quiet and comfy bunks upstairs.
Favourite city: Venice is going to win this one. Fireworks, festivals, seeing one of my best friends after 8 years, postcard views on every street, and late nights catching up and drinking wine listening to the water lapping at the canals? Absolute dream.
All around lovely trip and so glad I planned something instead of rotting away all summer! I hadn't travelled properly in aaaages, and it was a good mix of solo travel + travel with friends, and saw a solid amount of places too. I'm convinced the best way to travel is to talk to the people, eat their food, and just wander around and soak up the sights, and I feel like I got to do all those things and then some 🎉
Anyways I'll probs post a little more before work starts back up, but then I'll probably be taking another tumblr break! It was very nice to unplug and I also have some creative projects I'm working on, so I'm hoping to focus more on those this semester!

October 12 2023 Vila Real de Santo Antonio and Alcoutim, Algarve
We left the Grand Hotel after breakfast and picked our bikes up on the boardwalk across the street. Then we rode under crystal blue skies along the coast and inland to Alcoutim, which is a small city on the other side of the Guardiana River from Olivenza, Spain.
Both Alcoutim and Olivenza look very much alike, even though they are in different countries. Olivenza is the city in this photo, seen from the other side of the river in Alcoutim.
We had lunch at a restaurant on the second floor of a building on the Alcoutim marina. The food was not the best we've had on the trip and I really didn't eat much, so I explored the rest of the floor while the others ate.
From the terrace on the roof of the restaurant I had a great view of the marina. It seemed like a much more pleasant place to eat so I'm not sure why the guides chose the other room, but maybe the restaurant didn't make this one available.
The last thing I expected to see in Alcoutim was a huge papier mache cat, but there it was!
After lunch we had the choice of riding back over the same hill we had come over this morning, going back in the van, or taking the boat back on the Guardiana River. I chose to take the boats because I love riding on boats almost as much as trains. Because we had some time to kill before the boat docked, David, Ronda, Nickie, and I decided to visit the castle.
We climbed up the stairs to the tower and the views from there of Alcoutim, Olivenza, and the Guardiana River were spectacular.
We walked down to the port from the castle and walked along the marina to a place where Nickie, who had her swimsuit under her clothes, jumped into the water and swam!
The boat ride back was fun and people were drinking, dancing, and singing, but I was mostly tired from the ride and enjoyed the chance to relax inside the cabin, where I sat with Ronda for a while and then went on deck to sit with Amir and Nickie and get o know them better.
Suzanne joined us and we watched the boat pass under the bridge in Vila Real de Santo Antonio and were happy to be "home" again at our beautiful hotel, which looked lovely in the early evening light.
Before dinner we met on the roof terrace of the hotel for a cocktail party and our guides had a special treat for us- a slideshow of the tour and musicians playing Portuguese stringed instruments and a singer who sang fado, the folk music of Portugal, which also has African roots. It was a wonderful way to kickoff our last evening together and the delicious and delightful dinner that awaited us below in the hotel's restaurant.
Pedro, Rita, and Alex will always be on my top ten list of tour guides and I was grateful to have met them and experienced the Algarve with them.

October 8 2023 Ohlao and Ilha da Culatra, Algarve
We began our trip with Duvine, the tour company we have chosen, this morning, after breakfast at the hotel, by checking out and taking a bus with the lead guide, Alex to the next hotel where we'll be staying and where we met our other guides, Rita and Pedro. They fitted us for us for our bikes, and , thank goodness, mine is an electric bike!
Then we rode to a harbor nearby in Ohlao to take a boat ride on an inland waterway, a canal, called Canal de Ohlao, out to an island, the Ilha da Culatara, where we had lunch. We took two boats and Bruce and I were on the boat with Carolyn, Jim, David, Ronda, Debbie, Amir, and Stacey.
Alex is a Brit who has lived in both Spain and Portugal for many years, and as a guide for Duvine has led many tours in both countries, as well as elsewhere. As we motored along he told us a bit about the history of the area. Because I don't have a photographic memory, here is what Wikipedia says about it:
"Olhão is a major port and the largest fishing port in the Algarve. It is full of character with Moorish-style houses, an influence from the commercial links with Africa.
The gastronomy of Olhão is bound to be mainly based around fish and seafood. The lagoons provide in the area are excellent nurseries for clams, cockles, and oysters, and the sea provides an abundance of fresh fish. Olhão was one of the first major canning areas for tuna and sardines and the fishing fleets continue to land their catches every day at the dock."
We landed at the marina at Ilha da Culatara and walked through there to the restaurant, Maresia, where we had a DELICIOUS lunch, at least according to everyone else. since I'm mostly vegan, I couldn't appreciate the seafood the way everyone else did but the salad, grilled veggies and French fries were yummy.
Since I finished lunch first I took a tour of the island and later everyone else caught up with me and we walked through the neighborhoods together. The island is very small, with only about 700 inhabitants. The homes are also small but I found them to be unique and creatively decorated. The people who were sitting out on their porches smiled and some waved so it seemed like a hospitable little town.
After the boats dropped us off in Ohlao we rode back to the Octant Resort where we had checked in this morning. Our villa is magnificent and even has its own pool! There are two pools on the property so I'll be able to get a lot of swimming in after the rides, if I have the time.
After showering and changing for dinner we joined our friends on the patio of the restaurant where we were having dinner. It was wonderful to reconnect with them, because we hadn't seen some of them for a while. This morning we met the two new (to us) people, a couple named Nickie and Amir, who have been friends of our friends for some time but we hadn't met them before. Our guide, Rita, who seems VERY nice, stood next to them for a photo and the brilliance of her smile filled the room.
We all dressed up for our cocktail party and first dinner of the trip and Suzanne, Ronda, and Carolyn looked particularly lovely, especially when you consider that we had to bring biking clothing along with the rest of the clothes we'll need for the trip and many people are continuing on to other countries after this trip. Packing light is not just a skill, it's and ART!
With the exception of Nickie and Debbie's sister, Stacey, we've all been friends for many years and most of us have traveled together before including on bike tours in France and Spain. We ride together in Boulder County often and we are part of a close-knit social network of friends. A lot of love is shared among the people in this group and a lot of respect.
Alex and Rita finished off the dinner with a map of the Algarve and our routes for the next four days and they were a dynamic duo!
Unfortunately, the festive atmosphere was deflated when conversation turned to the attack yesterday in Israel by Hamas militants. I have been a supporter of freedom for the Palestinian People and the end of the occupation of Palestine, especially in Gaza, by the apartheid Israeli government, for over a decade but I also don't condone attacks on civilians by anyone, so I hope that an agreement on the exchange of hostages by BOTH Israel and Hamas can be reached soon and that no more innocent civilians suffer. Obviously, we went to bed with a lot more on our minds than tomorrow's ride.
