A Swedish Design With Dark Gray

Who says you can’t go dark gray in your kitchen?

Galvanized by a stunning Swedish apartment design, we’ve been prompted to share our newfound knowledge of how to artfully incorporate dark gray into the designs of your kitchen or bathroom. Don’t be intimidated; it takes no more than a few easy steps to master!

If you like gray in 2023, opt for darker tones such as steel gray or charcoal brown. They will provide an effective foundation upon which you can build further.

Pick out tones that complement each other yet still maintain an air of sophistication. A great trick is to mix smooth suede with glossy surfaces like copper and marble for an attractive contrast. Also adding details like window frames and cabinets make perfect accents for injecting extra personality into the room.

Utilize both natural and artificial elements to give the place its own unique aura. Layering focal points across textured furniture, sleek countertops and rich wood all contribute to making a stylish atmosphere while still being practical.

So don’t worry, transforming your room into a showpiece is surprisingly less daunting than it looks! With these simple guidelines, you’ll soon be able to transform any kitchen or bathroom into one that rivals fine Swedish design. Enjoy!

A Swedish masterpiece!!!

The small, one-bedroom apartment in Sweden was painted in dark gray. This brings out the elegance of the turn-of-the-century details. The walls are soft gray and highlight the white mouldings and floorboards. They also bring out the original heaters and the lovely rounded windows that let in so much light.

The original apartment was one large room. However, during remodelling, interior designers created a wall to divide the bedroom from the living area. A glass partition was added above the door to ensure that the bedroom has some daylight.

Medium gray walls are lighter than the dark gray walls in this apartment but still add some character and moodiness to the interior.

Dark gray living room with minimal design

Instead of using one dark gray accent wall for the whole place, we have painted it all in the same colour. This includes the built-in kitchen. The apartment has a sophisticated and elegant tone-on-tone design.

The minimalist appearance of the push-to-open kitchen cabinets pairs well with the white marble countertops, and thin marble backsplash that protects the gray walls.

The kitchen takes up almost the entire wall. Both the top and bottom cabinets offer lots of storage space which is crucial for small apartments.

The kitchen looks great with the stainless steel faucets and appliances. However, the upper cabinets do not reach the ceiling so that you can still see the crown moulding above.

Living and dining areas with sophisticated looks

The living room, dining area, and kitchen are all in the same space. However, it doesn’t feel cramped and still allows for all the functionalities you need to make your home a home.

Dark charcoal velvet sofa and the gray and green velvet throw pillows bring out the darker tones of the walls. The light gray area rug adds lightness to the space. The space is lightened by the light-soaped hardwood flooring. It seems to reflect natural light from the windows.

The living room has a small dining area that is strategically placed between the windows. These beautiful curtains are made of sheer beige to reflect the sunlight coming in.

The O table design is Ox Denmarq’s coffee and dining tables. I love how the green of the throw pillows comes back into the Gubi green velvet Beetle chair, it adds a nice touch.

The brass accents add a sophisticated touch to the neutral colours and gray walls throughout the room. This focal point of the space’s living room is also made up of brass and bright colours.

The wardrobe is hidden behind velvet curtains in a bedroom that fits into a niche. The gray bedroom was placed in the small space created by adding a wall to the space. However, you will notice that there is no door that allows light to flow between the rooms. The bedroom has at least some daylight thanks to its open layout and the glass panels at the top.

The wardrobe was hidden behind a gorgeous velvet curtain. It goes from wall to wall, floor to ceiling, and I love how the blue velvet reflects in the throw.

The hallway has a tone-on-tone, dark gray look

The hallway features a charcoal gray wall tone that has been combined with a tall wardrobe in the same color and a lower sideboard. The hallway is not exposed to daylight so the XL mirror in the center of the room serves two purposes. It allows you to inspect your outfit before you leave the apartment and also reflects some sunlight from the windows, making the space seem larger.

The brass accent pieces in the hallway add visual interest to gray walls. I also love how the brass is incorporated into the handles of tall wardrobe doors for a modern look.

This two story studio apartment in the center of St. Petersburg was designed for a girl who lives her life between two cities, with the cultural capital being home for approximately half of the year. 

The interior was designed to embody the atmosphere of the city through its rich dark palette–inspired by rain, romance and art. 

A red tufted sofa with bolsters at the arms brings a sense of sophistication.

Strawberry red modern dining chairs encircle a white round dining table in the corner of the living room, alongside a navy blue feature wall and green gypsum panelling.

Red Gubi Beetle style chairs spice up the dark dining room.

The round dining table is a black Tulip style table. Its circular outline is complemented by spherical glass vases, and its colour inspires an unusual two-tone paint effect on the art frames above it.

A green area rug pulls the elements of the lounge area together, and holds them separate from the neighbouring dining space and kitchen.

The small kitchen stands beneath a mezzanine bedroom with a library.

Up on top, a red headboard colours the sleep space.

This original federation house in Hunters Hill was in need of a makeover to bring it up to date. Observing how the family utilized the current house enabled smac to envision how spaces were being underutilized or how, through design, inhabitants were missing opportunities to engage with the spaces & each other. Shona McElroy of smac describes the home, Federation Charm, as an intentional journey through traditional formalness to whimsical modernity, tied together by subtle threads of design details.

Starting at the front of the house, two large heritage rooms, joined by a ornate archway were unused. They were cut off from the house and never furnished properly. smac studio created an entertainers dream. To commence the journey & keep in theme with the formality of the house, Parisian inspired paneling was added to all the walls of the large sitting & dining rooms. A silver silk rug sits under an original, reupholstered buttoned navy velvet chesterfield sofa, with it’s matching two armchairs done in a tan leather sitting adjacent. Opposite, a light grey wool Jardan “Andy” sofa adds modernity to the group. Two Classicon “Bell” tables are central in the room, mimicking the stained glass windows atop the bench seat & a mix of classic & modern artwork surrounds the room

In the dining room, a full wine wall complete with leather wrapped handles, smokey glass, dark timber & soft backlighting made a feature out of the clients love of wine collecting. Mustard velvet Gubi “Beetle” chairs surround the dark oval Gubi table, which sits atop a midnight blue plush silk rug, the whole room adorned by a hand blown glass pendant.

The house is broken up by a pivotal informal sitting room, where new black paneled glass sliding windows & doors enable the space to be shut off or opened up completely to the kitchen and dining. The existing bookshelf was redesigned to add dimension & interest. Now books &pieces of art sit side by side in protruding boxes & rectangles, with strip lighting to highlight special pieces. Gold mesh paneled timber cupboards hide the electricals, where a Superwhite stone from CDK wraps upward toward the kitchen, forming a beautiful credenza unit that flows seamlessly through to a kitchen bench

The home had an existing 90’s extension that housed the kitchen, laundry & study. The pokey doors on either side of the existing kitchen to the laundry and the butlers pantry made the kitchen feel small and cramped, and the obvious door to the study behind the dining table made the space a thoroughfare instead of a gathering space. The new space is the final stop point of the house, where sunlight fills the modern space and new expanses of sliding glass to replace stunted bi-folds look over the lush garden & pool. A 45 degree angle splay to the bottom of the kitchen island hugs the Gubi stools, and invites the users to take a seat facing the cook who looks out whilst cooking at the flush island cooktop. The laundry is concealed through the hidden butlers pantry, allowing the kitchen to use the full expanse of the wall with a modern matte black finish. Linear lights from overhead highlight the grand scale of the ceiling above.

Where the dining was a thoroughfare, it becomes an intimate, cocooned area, which directly opposes and balances the sleek black and white kitchen with bold greens and light timbers. Another Gubi table & chairs, this time in blonde oak and polypropylene forest green beetles with timber legs, creates a fun visual link to the formal dining area. They sit atop a green wool blend Armadillo rug, all complimented beautifully by a J.R Walker painting hanging in the new seating nook, which was once a cupboard. All this is backed by modern square paneling, another modern link to the formal living, which conceals a secret door to the study, where a new feature window looks over the expanse of the garden, to enhance creativeness within.

The house is wonderous myriad of thought, personalities & subtleties. It is perfectly tailored to living a modern, engaging family life whilst enhancing its periodic charm

House tour: a sprawling Mad Men-inspired apartment in the Netherland

Stark minimalism and sumptuous tactility teasingly rub shoulders in this penthouse apartment in the southern Netherlands city of Maastricht. With surprises at every turn, it embraces a sense of discovery in the spirit of the great Dutch explorers.

The owners, style-savvy expats, envisioning this as a pied-à-terre in their home city, had clear, if eclectic, ideas of what they wanted when they briefed Amsterdam interior designers Nicemakers back in 2017. “Design for us a comfortable home,” they told principals Joyce Urbanus and Dax Roll, “where the architecture of the Bauhaus meets the glamour of the Chrysler Building, where furniture designer Jean Prouvé meets interior designer [and architect] Joseph Dirand, where interior designers [and one-time set designers] Roman and Williams meets Mad Men and where Swiss minimalist architect Peter Zumthor meets The Wolf of Wall Street’s Jordan Belfort.”

In the dining area, custom dining table and Luca chandelier, both from Fiona McDonald; Beetle chairs from Gubi, enquiries to Cult; chairs upholstered in Glant fabric, enquiries to Ascraft; vintage cabinet found in Brussels; Civetta spotlights from Aldo Bernardi; rug from Amadi carpets; vintage vases, iron sculpture (all on cabinet), and sculpture (on dining table), all from Nicemakers’ private collection.

While the brief — with leanings towards Manhattan, European modernism and the cinematic — may have been lofty and expansive, so too is the apartment, a three-level concrete aerie atop a 1960s building. One of Maastricht’s few high-rises, it affords stunning views over the city centre. Those bird’s eye panoramas and the design potential, together with a touch of nostalgia, underlined the building’s appeal for the globetrotting professionals.

“As a boy, I walked along these streets and knew the building,” says one of the owners. “It always intrigued me.” In its former life it was a nurses’ hostel and then offices sat behind the functional facade. When a developer divided the building into apartments, the couple bought one apartment on the ninth level, both apartments on the 10th level and combined all into a three-bedroom home. As an added bonus, the top level included a roof terrace with 360-degree views.

“When we first entered,” says the other apartment owner, “it took us just ten seconds to decide to buy the apartments for the renovation project.” The internal walls were demolished, leaving just the shell, a blank slate for Nicemakers, whom the couple hired on the advice of a friend. “From the outside, the building is quite boring,” confesses Roll, “but the inside, especially the stripped tenth floor with its bare concrete and the beautiful rhythm of all the square windows, had the wow factor.”

Fusing all those design influences, the owners wanted “to create a 1960s and ’70s feeling, with warm colours, custom elements, vintage mid-century modern elements and a cossetting living space.” And all that within the building’s brutalist concrete backdrop.

Drama and gradual reveals are recurring themes, perhaps not surprising when TV and movie sets imbued the brief. “I saw film sets in front of me and everything came to life,” says Urbanus who, with Roll, has created a series of atmospheric spaces resembling mises en scène. “The elevator door on the ninth floor opens and you immediately find yourself in the world of Mad Men, feeling the ambience and expecting to hear Don Draper’s favourite music,” says Roll.

In the main bedroom, custom bed designed by Nicemakers, produced by Soons Interieurbouw; custom desk by De Intuïtiefabriek; Nimbus side table by Heerenhuis, enquiries to Spence & Lyda; custom bench designed by Nicemakers, produced by Soons Interieurbouw; Riddle bedside lamps by Bert Frank; Chasing Light rug from Frankly Amsterdam.

This club-like entry level contains a lounge area, study, kitchen and two guest bedrooms. “Here the clients wanted a more feminine ambience, hence the intimate salon feeling,” says Roll. Walk up the stairs and it’s like a curtain lifting on a theatre production, the drama reveals itself on a minimalist stage — walls, ceilings, columns and lift shaft are expressed in concrete formwork. Textured glass sliding panels envelop the basalt stairwell connecting the floors, with sunlight creating shadow plays on the glass, while herringbone timber, marble and terrazzo floors layer on the luxe, further expressed in deep velvets, leather and brass. Classic 20th-century furniture, lamps and accessories were gleaned at fairs, auctions and at galleries in Milan, Paris, Brussels and New York.

In the kitchen, custom counter with antique brass frame and Pyrolave enamelled lava stone benchtop designed by Eginstill in collaboration with Nicemakers; custom rangehood by Eginstill; Tumbler pendant lights by Lee Broom, enquiries to Space Furniture; Eiffel 1000 single wall light from Frama.

As the clients are keen entertainers, Roll and Urbanus placed the kitchen centrestage of the vast open-plan zone, which shares the upper floor with the main bedroom suite. The island, in the form of a bentwood chairs with brass frame and lava-stone top, surveys the entire loft space. To the left, the eye journeys towards the living room and dining area, while to the right it takes in the informal meals area with the main bedroom beyond. Service areas, tucked in behind the stairwell and clad in walnut, feature a small intimate passage that leads towards the bedroom.

In the bathroom off the main bedroom, custom natural stone sink designed by Nicemakers, and marble floor tiles, both from Solid Nature; Landmark Industrial tapware by Samuel Heath; vintage brass wall lights found in Brussels; vintage mirror from Galerie Libelle.

“We love to introduce perspectives that invite you to discover an interior and modern bentwood furniture, introducing a flow but also a connection,” says Roll. “They tease the eye and let you see the different spaces with one glance. Then light, layout and the various settings take you by the hand and guide you through.” Like artworks on constant rotation, the uniform square windows enclosing the apartment frame ever-changing views beyond.

The apartment revels in surprises and contradictions. “It shows as a warm and comfortable interior,” says Urbanus, “but look closely and you will see the complex details, the interiors’ second layer, including the materials and textures, and carefully chosen furniture, lamps and accessories. They caress the senses.” The interior is rich but with an industrial edge, simple and natural but layered and complex, raw yet sophisticated and, perhaps most importantly for the owners seeking a home, it looks lived in, despite being so new.
