A/N: I’ve missed this man. I hope you like? Next part will have some saucy little smut. Just trying this out first, also for self-indulgence.
Warnings: Tooth rotting fluff, language, mentions of injuries, self-esteem issues, mentions depression and body image.
Pairings: Eddie Munson x Plus size!Reader
Tumblr media
Eddie Munson loves his new band of misfit friends, an extended family that has welcomed him and Wayne in with open arms. Hell, he’s even getting along with Harrington, Wheeler is tutoring him, and everyone else just understands. And then, well… Then there is you. He’s never seen someone so in tune with the needs of others without ever considering herself. Someone who purposely pushes herself on the world’s hottest back burner to avoid opening up and letting anyone truly see what’s going on… Behind incredibly beautiful eyes, if Eddie does say so himself.
It’s been over a year since shit unfolded with Vecna. They lost, he died for a little while, the apocalypse reigned down on the town and then he wasn’t dead anymore. Memories are vague, but most things he does remember. And when he wakes up tangled in his bedsheets, scars aching with prickles of phantom pains - you are the only person that he calls. A lot of times he ends up singing you to sleep, but it’s not without you always making sure he’s calmed and okay first.
It was a bond that grew since you began caring for him when he came back with memories. He’s lost track of days spent together, lunches shared, a graduation a long time coming, complete with a party he never expected to have. He isn’t sure when it became a deeper feeling than he’s ever known, one that scared him so damn bad he avoided you for days and began physically ill because of it. If Eddie Munson has to pick one moment, it was probably that day you walked into his Uncle’s living room, (a cookout happening in his yard with Steve and Wayne at the grill outside) your beautiful curves on display, a cherry sundress hitting you in all the right places, and some strappy red sandals adorning your feet. You wore a glowing smile beneath your bright red lipstick, energy matching with Henderson’s as you entertained his enthusiasm for Hellfire’s next campaign.
You didn’t have a clue of what you were talking about, but it didn’t deter you in the slightest. You were passionate about writing, you enjoyed Sci-Fi and fantasy, which meant you had to be the one who helped Dustin create new characters. He knew the game, you had some extra creativity to lend. You’d high fived Dustin, stealing his pen to jot down your scribbled suggestions on his spiral sheet. Eddie was a goner.
And now… Here you are, at his house, on a Friday night. You didn’t have plans, you didn’t make a date - nothing. You did what you normally do and called him up, accepting his invite to hang out all evening. He’d made sure to be off work by a steady time, picking up your favorite bakery cookies at the store on the way home, lingering over flowers that he was sure he should get, but knew it would probably cross a line if he did so. Eddie doesn’t want you to feel spooked, or even anything remotely close to uncomfortable around him.
You’re sitting above him, cross-legged on his bed as he rests with bent knees at the foot, your overalls bagging out at the sides to show your crop top with little lemons and daisies printed all over it, and the most delicious, overflowing curves Edward Munson has ever had the pleasure of laying eyes on. He’s got a pair of your maroon sweats tied down, extremely loose on his narrow hips, and one of your decorative character shirts with a picture of Eeyore plastered front and center, hanging across his torso. You might not be able to wear his clothes, but he can wear yours, and Eddie would be stupid to say he doesn’t notice your eyes crossing a little whenever he steps into some of your ensembles. You’ve been chattering away at the TV, giving your input on Friday the 13th part 2, whilst being blissfully unaware of sending Eddie to heaven with your pink brush running through his freshly washed curls, your neon yellow painted nails scratching at his scalp. He’s like a mother fucking purring cat in your grasp.
“So, anyways… I can’t figure out if Muffin survived or if that was her in the woods. And did Paul really make it out too, or was Jenny imagining shit?”
Eddie smirks, tilting his head back to look at the curvature of your physique, the contours of your face - upside down (no pun intended). “Haven’t you seen this movie, like, a thousand times before?”
You have a mock look of offense. “Hmph.” He doesn’t like what it brings, because you can tease, but please - for the love of all things unholy - don’t stop brushing his hair.
“Hey, hey. Why’d you quit?” He’s pouting, it’s rather cute. One tattooed arm, decorated with scars - elongates, ring clad hand seeking out your wrist. Anything to get you into motion again.
“You know that you can brush your own hair, Eddie.” You’re melting at those fluttering lashes draped over an enriching, smooth chocolate pair of irises. And his mouth… Fuck.
“But it’s so much better when you do it, sweetheart. Pleaseeeee? Forgive me for questioning your brilliant questions!?”
You make a good show of it, tossing the brush out of your hand, it landing a pile of Eddie’s clothes in an unpacked hamper. They’re clean, but he’d rather wear yours. He gasps, shifting positions so quick that you think Steve must’ve Ninja-fied him. He’s got you by your wrists, the cool of his rings tracking across your arms as they follow warm palms, and dip under your pits to gain leverage - easing you forward into a heap onto the carpeting with him. “Freak attack!” He’s gleeful, tickling your denim clad sides (well, at least where he pretends he can’t see the overspilling flesh more closely now).
He smells good, like that familiar Old Spice wash and whatever shampoo he’s lathered his curls with. He’s hovering, he’s incredibly warm, he’s safe, he’s Eddie. Someone you didn’t know you needed until he appeared and retrieved his piece of your heart, snapping it into the place where all the people you love have their own shards. Hmm, not entirely though. If you could describe it, it’s as if they make up the outside lining, keeping the inside of your heart reserved for a more… Different, private type of love, that only Eddie Munson seems to have found.
“Should spank your ass with that thing for stoppin’,” he starts, interrupting your reverie, moving to shut his mouth when he realizes he crossed a line. Maybe? It’s there, your eyes flicker over his lips, your hidden reaction dancing behind your pretty little temple - he sees, giving him a fraction of hope. He isn’t used to this…
You jolt, blurting out the first thing that comes to mind, “Like that would be a punishment,” you finish, effectively crossing that line for him.
Both of you remain silent, your sweet perfume making him lose focus. What he thinks he should do and what he wants to do, those are two very different battles raging inside.

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
choi soobin -
he's a natural disasters kind of guy
like an og, 2015 roblox player
i think he probably played a LOT with kai during their trainee days
he doesn't really branch out and try new things
controversial, but most likely to get his account banned
he'd rage, once in a while
just let it all out
kai and gyu wouldn't listen during practice today? tyun wasn't feeling good? jjunnie was out doing something else?
bottled up emotions would come just flying out
very quick to apologise + very embarrassed
choi yeonjun -
flee the facility type of guy
“its not that serious”
screams, cries, and throws his computer across the room
tyun at some point has had to restrain him
but he always spares you whenever you're on diff teams <3
until he doesn't
so quick to switch up
but at the end of the day, to him it is actually just a game
he'll use it to make destroy gyu or kai sometimes
but he doesn't care that much
he just likes getting to spend time with you
choi beomgyu -
he would BEG to play adopt me
lowkey would just want to scam kids
but you would do it together <3
would also adore those silly roleplay games (where he gets to grill 7 year olds taking their online relationship too seriously)
whenever you two play you have to make sure he doesn't say anything that would get his account banned
def has like 10 burner accounts
he rotates hating on kids and getting suspended
most likely to have moa find his account tbh
he like barely hides it
kang taehyun -
he would be so contempt playing some sort of chill vibe game
you guys would sit for hours just chatting away listening to the music
then he'd ask to play toh
would beat ur ass
and would laugh abt it.
gyu is definitely his mentor
you will catch this man 'studying' each map
learning how to beat the levels as fast as possible
just wants to prove he's the best in some way🤧
huening kai -
the type to play royal high and love it
he'd have a cute little avatar and everything
the type to buy female sets
100% an og player
and 100% hates the new updates
“its so expensive~”
has over 2M diamonds
literally has every gamepass under the sun
probably started playing with hiyyih while he was a trainee

Hoofprints - Chapter 1
Tumblr media
Summary: You are the live-in stable hand at Peña Ranch. What happens when the owner of the ranch’s son, Javier, comes back to town? Will you finally be able to open yourself up to love and trust after being hurt?
Word count: 1346
A/N: This is my first try at an actual fic! Kind words and constructive feedback welcome. Every like, reblog, and comment is appreciated and I am happy to add you to a taglist❤️
Read on AO3 Chapter 2
Tumblr media
There is something so peaceful about being the first one in the barn at the start of a new day. The sun was just barely peaking over the horizon when you grabbed a bale of hay to start feeding out to the horses. You had been at this job for a little over a year now and were satisfied with your steady routine.
Two years before you landed this job, you wondered if you would ever be happy again. You felt as if your world crumbled at the snap of someone’s fingers. That someone was your ex-fiance. When he cheated on you 3 months before your wedding date, you knew you had to get away. It didn’t need to be far, but you did need a fresh start. After some much needed TLC and spending time healing from your heartbreak at your parents’ house, you found a job listing on Craigslist of all places. A stablehand was needed in a town called Laredo - about an hour from you. It was the perfect opportunity because not only would you be able to live on the property rent free, but you also could bring your dog with you. As a lifetime horse rider whose dreams had been hindered due to finances growing up, you were eager to accept the position.
You bonded with the owner of the ranch, Chucho, and felt as if you knew him your whole life. He was friendly and caring, but also had a no-nonsense attitude which you appreciated. Many days were spent in the saddle with light chit chat and laughter along Chucho. He always invited you into his home for dinner and asked if you wanted to tag along for his weekly trip to the feed store. You could sense his loneliness, probably because you were no stranger to loneliness yourself. He talked about “his boy” and how he was off “fighting the bad guys” in Colombia often. You could see how proud he was of him by the gleam in his eyes.
Tumblr media
It had been a long day in the Texas sun. A herd of cows got out on your lunch break and Chucho was nowhere to be found, so you had to wrangle them back into their pasture by yourself. Thankfully you had your cattle dog Gizmo and trusty horse Whiskey to help, though. Once you were done with afternoon chores all you could think about was taking a cool shower to wash the sweat and grime of today’s work off you.
After your shower, you changed into a sports bra and soft athletic shorts. You left your hair wet since the only thing calling your name tonight was your ceiling fan and a new movie you picked up yesterday from Blockbuster. Tonight was the night that Chucho met with the Agricultural Society, so you turned the burner on to make a simple grilled cheese.
The sound of knocking on your door startled you since you thought you were the only one on the ranch. Gizmo barked as you made your way over to the screen door.
Standing before you was the face of a man you had never met before, but he did look oddly familiar. He was wearing a pair of aviators along with tight jeans and a pink button-up shirt. He had dark, thick hair, a mustache, and was holding a casserole dish with tinfoil over it. You audibly gulped before putting a smile on your face to greet him, hoping he didn’t notice the way you were looking at him.
“Hey, I’m Javier. My pop wanted me to bring you dinner since he has his meeting tonight” he said. He reached his free hand out to you but couldn't pull his eyes away from looking at you up and down from behind his sunglasses.
Duh. This is Javi. He’s even more handsome in person.
You gave Javier your name and thanked him for walking your dinner over to your modest guest house. He took his sunglasses off and stuck them in his shirt pocket, and you couldn’t help but notice how beautiful his dark eyes were.
“Well, enjoy your dinner” he said while shifting his balance from his heel to his toe.
“Did you eat yet?!” you blurted out before thinking.
“Uh, no I haven’t” he replied with a tilt of his head. You stepped aside to let him in and then realized what you were wearing. Feeling self-conscious, you told Javier to take a seat and that you’d be right back. You hurried to your room and scrambled to find a pale blue tank top to throw over your sports bra and threw your hair into a messy bun.
“Sorry, I wasn’t expecting company tonight or else I wouldn’t have looked like this” you said, avoiding his gaze while you grabbed two plates and utensils from your cupboard.
God, this is so awkward. Act normal!
Javier cleared his throat and said, “You’re fine. My pops wasn’t even expecting me. Called him from the airport last minute this morning for a ride,” he chuckled.
The awkwardness in the room seemed to dissipate when you both found something to talk about.
“Oh wow, I bet he was so excited to see you, though. He talks about you all the time,” you said with a smile on your face as you sat down across from him at the table.
Javier looked up at you and grinned, “I’ve heard a lot about you too, ya know. He said that you’re a great worker and I think that he’s really enjoyed your company”.
You looked down at your plate with a smile on your face and muttered how nice of him that was to say.
The rest of the dinner consisted of you filling Javier in on all the updates at the ranch. You talked about how the old animals were doing as well as some of the new horses you got in during his absence. Javier admired how passionate you were about your work, and it was refreshing for him to see your enthusiasm about something so pure. After many years of Hell in Colombia, seeing your face light up while talking about the new colt Chucho got for you to train, “Beau”, almost made his heart swell. Yet, he still tried to ignore that feeling.
After finishing your dinner, you got up and took his plate to put in the sink.
“Sorry, I’ve totally been babbling on and on about these horses. I’m guessing you aren’t into this stuff as much as I am since you chose a different career path,” you apologized.
Javier shook his head and asked, “Why do you say that? I’m enjoying being filled in on everything I missed while I was gone.” He smiled again and you watched the way his chest was rising and falling. He just kept his eyes on you and suddenly you could feel all the blood rushing to your face. How was he making you feel this way? You acknowledged the fact that you hadn’t really had any experience with men since your dreaded ex-fiancé and chalked it up to that.
All you could manage was a giggle and a small “okay” in return.
The sun was starting to set for the night, so you mentioned how you had to be up early for chores and that you’d walk him to the door.
“It was nice meeting you, Javier. You’re welcome over anytime. I don’t get many visitors besides your dad” you chuckled and hoped that you weren’t being too forward. It would be nice to have another friend. If that friend was extremely attractive, well, that was just a plus… right?
“Javi. You can call me Javi,” he said softly. He took a deep breath before turning to the door. Looking over his shoulder he called your name and said, “Thanks for taking care of my pop while I was gone. I really appreciate it.”
“Of course,” you responded gently, “night Javi.”
You watched him walk back to the main house with a smile on your face.

Ghost helpline chapter 37
Jason couldnt help but give his entire family the side eye. Seriously Bruce? A family dinner? Family dinner with thier nieghbors?? That he has a crush on ???!!! Pppfff oh yeah this was going to work out swimmingly. Whatever.
Jason didn’t know why he felt so knotted up inside about the whole thing. It’s not like they were going to find anything and “Brucie” has had plenty of guests over before. And yet Jason felt snubbed, Bruce knew Jason wouldnt be able to join in. He was still legally dead and couldnt just pop into joint family dinner like “oh yeah I got better dont worry about it”. No Jason would need to steer clear of the mannor all together.
Meanwhile his siblings would get to tease dad about his crush, grill the Masters family and talk to Damiens new friend. Because seriously Damian making friends, with a normal girl? Just wow. Good for the kid, because he defiantly hadn’t learn that from Bruce he scoffed for fucking hells sake even Vad had a sketchy criminal history on his buisness Dalv co.
It stung, it was so fucking stupid but it stung. Why didn’t Jason get to be there. Why didn’t he get to shovel talk Bruce’s crush, eat Alfred’s food, sit around awkwardly, and tease Damian relentlessly?
Jason knew why. He did. Logically Jason knew it wasn’t an attack on him. That Bruce hadn’t purposefully done things this way to exclude him. That he was/n’t an embarrassment, dangerous and unwanted to meet Bruce’s new crush because he couldnt be trusted. It wasn’t personal, it’s not personal.
Beep beep
Jason glanced down to his burner phone and grinned manically at the photo of the skunk haired man he’d been tracking strolling into a warehouse… ..with someone young and pink on their arm. Jasons stomach rolled in disgust at the age difference, “Well hello misplaced aggression.”
——
Damian had been hanging around the Masters manor regardless of fathers …complications of the heart. He and Violet needed to plan a strategy of course. The plan had to be seem-less to even stand a chance of working. A part of that involved English lessons which thankfully doubled as a cover. Damian huffed to himself as Violet failed to write neatly again. It was odd to watch, she could speak with a fair sense of clarity and understood difficult concepts when spoken to but written language seemed to illude her. It was frustrating to watch, her hands moved wrong twisting against the pencils and often snapping them. Damian watched as her hand seemed to twitch uncomfortably as she finished.
“You’re bad at this.”
“Gee thanks I had no idea.”
“Tt. It’s ridiculous anyone as old as you should know how to read and write at a higher level than a sixth grader.” Damian felt his hand fall down his face, “You text just fine though, your horrid grammar aside.” Meaning a big part of the problem was physical….now that he thought about it … he hadn’t seen Violet without her human disguise despite already knowing her secret. Both forms had gloves. There’s something else going on here.
The assassin felt ice at his back.
“Let me see your hand.”
That coldness remained as a small warmth was thrown against his chest as she unthinkingly shoved her hand in his face and ate away at her sugary processed snack- dirtying her practice writing paper further.
Taking off her gloves gave sight to three short claws black from tip to knuckle, two fingers incased in a familiar metal. He hadn’t expected it at all, was Violet allowing him to see this purposefully? A limitation of her glamor? A benefit of their bond?
Beep beep
Damian dropped the others hand to glance at the text. Father did what!?
“What do you enjoy eating?” What do demons even eat? Can demons be vegans? She does look a tad like a ram.
“Red and dad make the best cakes!!!”
“Tt. I meant real food, and I’m sure you will change you mind at tomorrows dinner. Alfred’s desserts are superior to all else.” He planned to ignore her millionth mention of “Red”, she was beyond obsessed and he was not falling for the bait… again. Ugh.
Violet stilled, “Oh are you staying for dinner tomorrow.”
“No it would seems our fathers have gotten it into their minds to bring us all into their nonsense.” Damian huffed.
Violet groaned, “Uhhh nooo I don’t want to.”
“Yes well as detestable as it will be -“
“Not that I just, I don’t like eating in front of humans.”
A delicate eyebrow rose at the statement.
“This isn’t “real food”, human food isn’t my food.” Blood guts crunching on a heart like an apple, wide green eyes staring at her horrified. Scared.
Damian thought about it more. Pencils breaking, the way her hands shook and holding a fork was probably difficult for her?
“So what do you consider food to you?”
“Anything.”
“Violet.”
“Anything I’m a scavenger demon …” her eyes rolling at the look on his face, “Tendons, bone, eyes, decorative flowers and overgrown weeds. You could say we are real … vultures.” She chuckled at her inside joke.
The way she spit out the term “scavenger demon” had him reeling a-bit. There was an obvious issue there… somewhere. Fear slithered threw the bond unwillingly, self deprecating and shallow. He at least understood this feeling well.
The feeling that screamed :
Don’t look at me. Don’t look at me like /that/.
Well he supposed he at least knew a good dish to have made for her. Hopefully Alfred wouldn’t mind a change in the menu.
—- —— —-
Bruce was NOT freaking out he wasn’t! And he will deny it forever. He just really wanted this to go well. He needed this to go well.
And he loves his children deeply! But sometimes they could all be a bit much….
At… family dinners. They yelled and fought and they were all fairly high strung but the Masters weren’t like them half of them looked like a strong breeze could knock them over dear lord….
“Bruce!”
“Bruce.”
“B!”
“Ow!!”
….please just, just don’t fight in front of Vlad.
—- —- ——
The triplets, sans Ziyad, positively swarmed their fathers closet. This was going to be great!
Klarion and Billy looked over at Dandy’s murderous face, this was going to be awful.

Charcoal Grills:
There is something extraordinary about cooking on a charcoal grill. You can achieve high-heat grilling or low-heat smoking, or both with ease. The ability to manipulate the coals to create direct or indirect heat, or even both at once, gives you a level of control unique to these grills. What sets charcoal grills apart is their flavor –the combination of vaporized drippings on the hot coals and wood chips added to the coal bed infuses food with a smoky deliciousness that is hard to beat. Whether grilling burgers, smoking a brisket, or anything in between, a charcoal grill will elevate your cooking game.
We have some of the best charcoal grills offering superior quality, performance, and features. You can opt for the built-in model or a portable charcoal grill and have a thrilling cooking experience while impressing your guests with your grilling skills.

Premise: The day has come for the special detachment to embark on their mission of blowing up a uranium plant before it is operational. After weeks of denying re-emerging feelings, Barbara and Bradley have found their way back into each other’s arms and have to come to terms with the reality they face moving forward. And their future isn’t the only one at stake on this mission for Barbara may lose the chance to reignite the bond between her and her once estranged father, Pete Mitchell.
Note: this is shorter than the previous chapters and probably will be the shortest of all (except maybe the epilogue). I’m debating on making the last 30 min of the movie one long ass chapter or splitting it up please. I originally had this story as 6 chapters, but then decided on 7 and may do 8 unless you guys are okay with waiting for the last chapter. I am a grad student and currently have a lot of important assignments this month that may put this story on the back burner. I’ll still work on it a little day by day, but may not be able to pump out three thousand words a day like I normally have. I’ll keep you guys updated and I hope you enjoy this chapter ♥️
———————————————
“Talk to me, Goose.”
The words that stuck with him even thirty years after he was gone. Maverick stood alone on the carrier below the deck as the breeze from the ocean before him kissed his face. The memory of him throwing Goose’s tags into the sea as a final send off. Gone, but never forgotten.
“Captain Mitchell,” her voice called to him seconds later, and Maverick slowly turned to see Barbara standing in her flight suit free of gear with tears in her eyes. “Dad,” she corrected, which sent a wave of emotion through him. “You’re where you belong.”
Mav was holding his own tears which he was sure spilled once Barbara approached and launched into his arms. They held each other tightly, Barbara pushing her face against Mav’s chest as his one hand cradled the back of her head. “Make us proud,” she whimpered out, letting the emotion overtake as she tightened the hold around his waist. “And come home. Please.”
A tear dropped from his eye, “I promise.” At that moment the overhead tarmac dropped down and together the two Mitchell’s walked onto it with Mavericks arm around Barbara’s shoulder while hers rested on his waist. As it brought them onto the deck Barbara thought back to the past 48 hours leading to that moment.
When Rooster shamelessly admitted he already had his stuff packed in his Bronco following a much needed second round, he cleared her up and brought her into his arms for some much needed sleep. It was just before midnight when they knocked out—neither wanting to discuss the futureand awoke just after 4 am. To save time they showered together with both having to face away from each other for fear it would lead to something more.
They didn’t have time for that and Barbara would rather sit naked on a hot grill than explain why both she and Rooster were late to the docks.
Her plan was to have him leave before her to avoid suspicion from the others, but Bradley just shook his head and said, “Are you seriously going to ride your bike when you have a backpack and duffle? Just throw it in the Bronco, we’ll go together.”
“I don’t think that’s a good idea….”
“What, are you worried about what they may think?” He scoffed, snapping his belt and making sure it was lined with the seam of his uniform. When Barbara went to start a pot of coffee before their shower he had gone to get his stuff. “Hate to break it to you, baby, but they already know.”
“And how exactly do they know?” Barbara questioned with suspicion, lightly coating her eyelashes with mascara before moving to grab her blow dryer. Now she was definitely not looking forward to being on the carrier.
Rooster just smirked at her through the mirror, adjusting his collar. “Wasn’t really hiding my intentions when I asked Phoenix for your address, Barb.”
“Oh,” she hummed, taking her wet brush and running it through the wet strands of hair. “Your intentions were to seduce your ex-wife back into bed. I see.” A gasp escapes her mouth when Rooster’s arms suddenly go around her waist and pull her back to his chest. She nearly drops the brush when he leans down to nip her earlobe.
“My intentions were to win back the woman I love who I made the mistake of walking away from. The sex was a plus.” He pressed a kiss to her jaw, meeting her eye in the mirror. The flush of her face brought Rooster satisfaction, lips curling up as he pressed into her. “Let’s not forget, you’re the one who wanted to dance for me.”
Fuck he got her there. Barbara did initiate round two because to be fucking honest their sex life was never just one and done. Neither were satisfied until at least three orgasms unless they were exhausted from the day. And as a switch, Barbara loved dancing on Rooster to the point he was a babbling mess for her.
His kisses along her jaw and neck brought her out of the lustful thoughts, Barbara gently breaking away with a playful expression. “Now, now, Bardshaw. You know the rules when in uniform. Best to not disrespect it any further.” He groaned, adjusting his pants before checking his watch to see it was already pushing 4:30. Thank God Barbara lived just down the street from the docks.
“Like we haven't done worse,” he snickers when she yelps as he lands a light slap to her ass before walking out of the bathroom to move their bags to the Bronco. While he’s out Barbara quickly dries her (thankfully) short hair in record time and straightens it lightly to give it a cropped effect. With a ‘Hmm’ she realizes she could easily pull off a Mia Wallace look for Halloween.
Putting on some simple studs and giving one last look over to make sure her uniform was polished, Barbara takes her phone, cigarette tin, and any last minute items she forgot before leaving her room. She doesn’t bother making the bed after much debate….the sheets would have to be washed when she returned. Dumping out any leftover coffee and hand washing it, Barbara locks up her home and meets Rooster outside in the already running Bronco. It was still dark out, the horizon just barely starting to light up in the distance.
The second she’s closing the door his lips are on her before she could even buckle up. “What was that for?” She asks with an exhale, surprised by the gesture. Rooster just smiles and replies, “I doubt being on the carrier we’ll be able to be together much. Just in case that was the last time I got to kiss you, I wanted it to be where it felt like home.”
Water lined her eyes, Barbara sniffing as emotion coursed through her. Without warning her hand goes to the back of his neck and pulls him to her again. The kiss is much like the one they shared at the tarmac the day before. Slow and full of love. It would have gone on longer if her phone alarm hadn’t scared the shit out of them.
“Fuck—sorry,” she hits the dismiss, reading the time at 4:40. She mentally patted herself on the back at the fact she managed to shower, dress, do her hair and get out of the house in an impressive amount of time. All with her…ex? Boyfriend? Undecided partnership? They’ll figure it out after the mission.
The golden rule of being in the military: if you’re early, you’re on time. If you’re on time, you’re late.
The docks were only a short drive down the street and a left turn into the parking lot, but they couldn’t risk being late. “We should get going.”
“Yeah,” Rooster agreed, kissing her blushing cheek and leaning back into his seat. Barbara buckled in as he reversed in the driveway before starting down the road out of her small neighborhood which consisted mostly of beach houses. The entire drive Rooster held Barbara's hand, bringing it to rest on his right thigh. The music was at a low volume, Barbara had her window down to let the cool breeze from the ocean saunter in.
When they arrived at the docks, most of the team had already arrived. It looked like most had the same idea of carpooling. Harvard and Yale were with Omaha. Phoenix, and Halo caught a ride with Bob while Fanboy hitched one with Payback. Lastly Hangman was pulling in at the same time as them with Coyote.
“You ready?” Rooster softly asked as he shut off the engine and unlocked the doors. The answer didn’t come in words but a simple nod, Barbara giving him a small smile as he grabbed her hand again to gently squeeze it.
As they got out of the Bronco and moved to the back to retrieve their bags. Neither turned to face their fellow aviators who were all pretty much gawking at the sight before them—which they expected. Phoenix was the only one with a genuine smile, happy and relieved to see the two together. Hangman and Coyote expressions were more of, ‘well I’ll be damn.’ The others were a mix of both though they couldn’t help but be surprised at the timing.
Thanking Rooster as he handed her the backpack and duffle, Barbara pulled it around her shoulders and slung the duffle strap onto one. Once Rooster was ready and the car was locked, they walked side by side to meet with Phoenix and Bob who were kind enough to wait on them. There was no mistaking the knowing look Phoenix was sending the two, brows raised to silently say, ‘Lovers quarrel has been settled?’
“Phoenix, Bob,” Barbara nods, removing the cigarette from behind her ear to place it between her lips.
“Morning you two,” Nat smiles, watching Barbara light the tobacco as she comes to her side. Bob and Bradley share a bro handshake, but not before the latter sends a look of disapproval to Barbara.
“This is my last one for a while, okay Bradshaw? Get off my ass.”
Rooster clicks his tongue, trying to stop the smirk from forming, “Wasn’t gonna say anything, but glad to hear it.” Barbara rolls her eyes, walking ahead of the men with Phoenix and leans in to whisper, “He secretly finds it hot, but won’t admit it.”
With a laugh Phoenix nudges her fellow aviator while wiggling her eyebrows, “I take it you two made up?” A huff is her reply, but make no mistake the expression gives Barbara away.
“We’re working on it.”
“I’m happy for you. Really, you two are like Yin and Yang.”
Barbara lets her gaze flicker to the ground briefly after blowing the smoke in the opposite direction, “Let’s not get ahead of ourselves, Phee. We’ve got more pressing matters to focus on.” That has the Lieutenant tilt her head, remembering a certain topic of discussion she’d been dying to ask Barbara about.
“You think Cyclone will really fall through? I mean court-martialing when all you did was prove he was wrong about changing—.”
“I stole a multi million dollar jet, Phee. I quite literally broke the law,” Barbara was aware the two men were more than likely listening to their conversation for their own had fallen silent. She could feel Rooster’s eyes on her. “He can’t go after Maverick just yet, but he can punish me right now. Trust me, the worst thing that could come out of it is a dishonorable discharge.” In the corner of her eye she saw Phoenix draw in a sharp breath. “But maybe the judge or whoever decides my fate will see it was necessary and demote me or hell I don’t know. All I know is I made my bed, now it’s time for me to lay in it.”
“Still I don’t think it’s fair,” Phoenix comments, watching Barbara finish the bud before discarding it in the ashtray on the trash can. “With what Cyclone was planning, none of us would have a chance. It would have put us in harm's way. I mean, yeah we knew the risks and accepted them by doing this job, but still I don’t think anyone is truly ready to lay down their life. And when their superior sees it like that it drops their confidence.”
“I know,” Barbara mutters, pinning a glance to her friend with solemn eyes. “That’s why Mav and I did what we did. He wouldn’t forgive himself if anything happened to you guys out there.” Pain filled her heart at the thought of Maverick losing his wingman. The man has seen more death than the average human and though he acts like it doesn't bother him, Barbara can see the toll it takes on him daily.
Once on the carrier they were issued their rooms with Barbara bunking with Phoenix and Halo. She and Rooster exchanged one last glance before they were separated. Mav had yet to be seen, and Barbara assumed it was because he was doing last minute briefings with Cyclone and Warlock.
Throwing her duffle on the bottom bunk to claim it, much to the annoyance of Phoenix who Barbara just sent a cheeky look to since Halo had already claimed the second bottom bunk, Barbara unpacked her portable memory foam cushion, pillow and thick blanket to lay on the bed. “God, I’m always reminded why I hate being offshore with these damn back breaking mattresses.” The two women make sounds of agreement.
“Hey,” Phoenix sticks her head over from the top bunk, “I just wanna make sure we’re on the same page. We—,” she waves a finger between her and Cali, “won’t have to deal with the possibility of walking in on something between you and Rooster—.”
“Trace, do not finish that sentence!”
“I just want to make sure I don’t see anything I’m not supposed to, C.”
“For God's sake, I am not that shallow. You know the rules.”
“Oh, now you care about rules. That’s the first time I’ve ever heard those words come out of your mouth.” Barbara flipped her off, making the brunette giggle.
“Gotta keep on my P’s and Q’s if I wanna keep my job,” she mumbles under her breath. Last thing she needed was Cyclone adding more shit to his case against her.
“So you two are back together?” Halo wonders with a smile. Barbara groans, putting a hand to her face while the other flips off Phoenix again. Her laughter has the woman tilt her head back with closed eyes like she was praying to a higher power to give her the strength.
She could only imagine what Rooster was dealing with.
Barbara brings her hands together with a deep exhale, “It’s complicated. He came over last night. We…..talked—.”
“Yeah right,” Phoenix snorted. “I saw the look in that man’s eyes last night when he asked for your address. He was on a mission.”
“Natasha…”
“Look, you two are grown ups—once married—and the past week has been filled with suffocating sexual tension.” At Barbara’s mortified look, Phoenix chuckles and goes back to sorting her stuff. “You don’t have to hide the fact y’all hooked up. I mean, we can all put it together since you carpooled.”
Halo agrees, “Yeah, C. Everyone knows—no need to be shy about it. Plus when was the last time you got laid?” Barbara refuses to answer the question, a light blush coating her cheeks. It was embarrassing for the woman to admit the previous night was the first in over two years. Even Rooster had commented how tight she was which made her more flustered. The truth was she tried to have casual hookups a year after the divorce, but the poor guys could not satisfy her. There was no one like Rooster and it was obvious he ruined her for any other man.
They all had poor stamina, couldn’t make her finish, or just overall were bad. It wasn’t like she had a lot of partners—quite frankly it was only three. And she wasn’t going to ask Rooster if he had been with anyone at that time. It wouldn’t be surprising and she had no right to judge. Humans have needs—sexual attraction is part of nature.
Once the three finished up they reported to the mess hall for breakfast. A glare was sent to Rooster when he sat his happy ass down beside Barbara, aware the others were staring at them with mixed expressions. Most of them were amused. “Seriously?” She hissed, stabbing the eggs with a fork.
“What?” He shrugged like he didn’t know what she was talking about. But she knew him better than that.
“Don’t act like you don’t know what you’re doing, Bradshaw.” The fork waved in his face to emphasize her point. All he did was smirk in return, turning his head away as he brought his coffee to his lips. Phoenix was loving it much to Barbara’s annoyance. So was Payback who was seated next to Rooster.
Breakfast went by fast and soon they were ushered into a room to be debriefed on the day's plans. It would be at least another 24 hours before they were close to the desired location. The time went fast before they knew it. As the hours passed nerves surfaced from everyone on board the carrier. The Dagger Squad were often called away for private briefings and Barbara managed to run into her father at one point which led to the man finding out what happened between her and Rooster.
“I didn’t see your bike or car in the parking lot,” he casually said, noticing the way her body stiffened. “Did you catch a ride with someone?”
“Yeah,” she coughed, hand coming up to block it when really she was trying to hide the blush forming on her cheeks. Without looking at Mav, she admitted, “Bradley and I actually rode together.”
“Oh,” His voice went low, mouth forming an ‘o’ shape. Though he was tempted to question the details, the awkward shuffle from his daughter plus the avoidance of looking him in the eye was enough to at least imply something happened. A red color appeared on his own cheeks and Maverick looked away to clear his throat. He decided not to say a word in the end and instead give a curt nod.
Talk about awkward.
Something else that could have had that same feeling came when Barbara was walking to her room late that night and was suddenly pulled from the side into a storage closet. “What the fuck—!” A hand clamped over her mouth as she was brought to a hard chest. The light was off with little light emitting from the window on the door, but the musky scent of familiar cologne had the pilot push away the hand and playfully smack his chest. “Jesus Christ, Bradshaw. Are you out of your mind?”
Rooster lifted her up, securing her legs around his waist with his hands resting on her ass to hold her up. “Sorry, baby.” The apology was flat because in all honesty he wasn’t sorry. Barely could she make out the smug expression on his face.
Barbara tightened her arms that hung around his neck, “What are we teenagers? You can get demoted if we’re caught.” A shudder coursed through her when Rooster started to leave a trail of kisses from her ear to her jaw. “Dammit, Bradshaw, now is not the time to be reckless like me,” she groaned, biting her lip to stop the smile peeking out.
“I missed you,” he whined against her skin, walking a bit so they were pressed against the wall and away from the door. Pleasure filled him when he felt Barbara run her fingers through his hair, aiming for the curls that rested on the nape of his neck.
“You’re a menace,” her lips brushed over his, feeling his smile against her own. “You’ve seen me all day—except for maybe three hours when you were called for a meeting.”
“Still, I missed being close to you,” he presses into her more, “Been waiting all day to get you alone.”
“Oh so you just so happened to know I would be coming down the hallway at that given moment and waited for your chance?”
“Yeah,” he shrugged like it was the most obvious answer. “Baby, now that I have you back in my arms I don’t ever wanna let you go. I’ll take whatever time I can get to be touching and kissing you even if it means sneaking like kids and fooling around in a closet.” With that he leaned in and sealed their lips together. After the sweet kiss that morning, Rooster was counting down the minutes until he could taste Barbara again.
It was like a spark had reignited between the two. While the stance of their relationship was sorta on the fence with no official title, there was no doubt in question they loved each other. Longing looks and light touches as they passed became a habit throughout the day. Unfortunately the addiction Rooster had for Barbara and vice versa was difficult in their situation. Neither had rooms to themselves where they could sneak off to and the carrier had their friends, Maverick, and the Admirals. If they were to get caught in a frisky position word would spread like wildfire.
“You better calm that boner I feel against me, Lieutenant. There’s no way I’m letting you fuck me against this wall when anyone could pass by at any given second.” His groan made her chuckle, pressing a kiss to his pouty lips. “I’m in enough hot water as it is. I’m not gonna let you be in the same boat when you’ve got something big in less than a day.”
“Can we at least make out for a bit?” The question was so expected of Rooster and the tone in which he said it had Barbara slapping a hand to her mouth to muffle her laughter. Rooster giggled with her, adjusting her in his arms when she slid a bit. One calm, Barbara put her hand to his cheek, “Sure, pretty boy. You’ve got fifteen minutes—better make it worthwhile.”
That was a day ago. Now Barbara was walking across the runway of the carrier with Maverick. Cyclone had called a meeting with everyone on board to go over the plan of action one last time just before she found him alone muttering the words, “Talk to me, Goose.”
The jets were lined up, pre-flight checks in order as the pilots arrived. Barbara and Mav walked together with his arm over her shoulder. Several glances were sent their way but Barbara kept her eyes forward as they approached his F-18. Squeezing his hand, Barbara said, “I’ll be right back,” and left for Phoenix and Bob. Jogging over just before they could climb in, Barbara pulled the dark-haired woman into a hug. “You better kick ass out there, Phee.” This mission was personal to Barbara on so many levels.
It has the lives of her father, lover, and friends on the line.
“When have I ever not, C?” She teased back, tightening the hug before releasing so Barbara could do the same to Bob.
“When you get back we’re going dancing like old times.” Back when she and Rooster were married, they had been stationed together with Nat and the two women made it a tradition to have a girls night whenever one returned from an assignment. When Pheonix agreed with a ‘hell yeah’, Barb patted Bob's arm, “Bob here can even join in.”
“Uhh-I-I uh don’t really dance.”
“We’ll teach you,” the wink she sent caused a blush to his cheeks. It reminded her of when they first met just a few short weeks ago. With one last good luck, Barbara departed and went to Fanboy and Payback. She made it quick with a hug and threatening to kick their ass if they didn’t come back in one piece. Spinning on her heel, she made her way back to Mav while looking around for Bradley. When she caught sight of him he wasn’t alone.
Hangman was with him.
It appeared that no words were exchanged with the two men just staring at each other. Then as Barbara got closer she faintly heard over the noise Jake shouting, “you give em’ hell!” Rooster looked stunned, not expecting the words from his rival. As Hangman passed him he remained still, head slightly turning but gaze on the ground. He hadn’t noticed Baraba approaching from the side, who gave a nod to Jake when they caught eyes, but soon lifted his head to find her staring back at him with a nervous expression.
The tension in his posture disappeared, legs moving at a fast rate to close the distance between them. Rooster didn’t care they were out in the open, in uniform, and should be climbing into his jet at that very second. No, he stormed right up to Barbara, free hand not holding his helmet cupping her jaw and bending down to bring her into a searing kiss. The gasp she emitted has his tongue sliding past her lips, deepening the kiss for all eyes to see.
Which all eyes did see. Maverick was trying not to intrude but there was a small smile on his lips. It brought him great joy the two were together again in each other’s arms despite the inner conflict at what they were about to face. On the opposite side the foxtrot teams were exchanging knowing looks, happy while also worried. Hell even Hangman was reacting the same, not ruining the moment with some snide comment.
“I love you,” Barbara stood on her tippy toes, thumb tracing over the scars on Roosters face as tears watered her eyes. “I love you so much, Bradley.”
“I love you too, baby,” he kissed all over her face, holding back his own emotion to not worry her further. God how much he missed hearing those words.
“You got this. As much as I believe in you, you have to believe in yourself more than anything. Trust your instincts. You better—,” she sniffed, pushing a hand against his chest where his heart lay, “—You better fucking come back to me. Or I swear to God, Bradley, I’ll never forgive you. I’ll kick your ass in the afterlife if I have to.” She feels him press his lips to her forehead, lingering there for a second while her eyes close.
“I have to come back, so I can take you to the chapel and wife you up again.”
All the air leaves Barbara, eyes snapping wide open to stare at him in disbelief, “W-what? Are you serious right now?” Did she really hear that right or was she daydreaming? It had to have been a joke.
But it wasn’t a joke.
His face was serious, the sweat bedding along his hairline slowly dripping down as he stared into her soul. “Marry me, Barbara Mitchell. Be my wife again, please. I know I fucked up once—my biggest regret that will haunt me forever—and I will spend the rest of my life making it up if you have me again.” His lips curl up a bit at her look of bewilderment, “Hell we can even get the Chaplin on board to officiate right now—.”
“O-oh my God, no—,” she stuttered out with a watery laugh, her heart literally pounding out of her chest. Leave it to Rooster to want to elope minutes before he’s about to embark on a life or death mission. “We are not shotgunning this again like last time.”
“So is that a yes then?” He smiles at her, eyes full of love and adoration which she mirrors.
Instead of answering yes or no, Barbara simply kisses him and says, “Come back to me and you’ll get your answer.” He kisses her back passionately, knowing damn well it was a yes. Her previous sentence had sealed the deal for him. But, because of the situation Barbara couldn’t bring herself to say the word. There was still that fear something could go wrong.
Together hand in hand they approach his plane but instead of Bradley climbing in they move toward Maverick. “Sir.” Maverick turns around to see the two, Rooster addressing him. Barbara squeezes his hand before letting go and stepping back to give the two space. “I…I just wanna say—,” the sound of the flight crew announcing orders interrupts the pilot. Several crew members run past them, the clock ticking down till go time.
“We’ll talk,” Mav tells him with a nod, “when we get back.” It was a promise. One that sent a wave of anxiety through Barbara as she took in Roosters distressed expression. There was something about the way Maverick said the words that, although assuring, felt worrisome.
A moment passes, then Bradley gives the Captain a nod before spinning around. Placing one last kiss to Barbara’s lips, the two holding each other’s gaze to convey the unspoken words they wished to say, Rooster moves to his jet while she watches on.
“B-Bradley!” Maverick suddenly shouts, causing Rooster to halt his movements. “You got this.” The simple phrase had Barbara’s tears resurface. It was all Rooster wanted to hear from Maverick. Yeah she told him the same thing just moments ago, but it was impactful to hear it from the person he’s trained his entire career to prove himself to.
Barbara could tell the words cut deeply into Rooster, the man releasing a shaky breath as he nodded. When he meets her eye Barbara mouths, ‘I love you,’ which he returns before saluting, shaking the hand of the crew member, and climbing into the F-18. It’s then that Barbara goes to Maverick, arms already open to embrace him. It was no doubt her eyes were rimmed with red after crying so much in the span of just twenty minutes. Her reputation of being an ice cold, nearly emotionless aviator was about to tarnish.
But who could really blame Barbara Mitchell? They’d probably be in the same shoes.
And for Pete Mitchell, he couldn’t remember the last time he’d hug his daughter so much. Their strained relationship and her avoidance of his physical touch as a teen and young adult made him realize how precious moments like this were. How he missed out on so much by putting his career first.
He missed her first steps. Her first words. Her first birthday. The first day of school. Her first recital. The first time she broke a bone playing soccer. Her first heartbreak. Her high school prom.
Her college graduation.
Her commission.
Her wedding day.
Pete Maverick Mitchell hardly had regrets for he believed the path one takes was meant to be walked. But in that moment, if he could turn back time and choose a new one, without hesitation he’d choose the one that would have him be the father Barbara deserved, even if it meant giving up the piece of his life he was devoted to. To be a better man for her. For Barbara Caroline ‘Legacy’ Mitchell is who he should have been devoted to from the very beginning the second she was brought into the world. His legacy.
“I love you, dad.”
“I love you too, my darling girl.”

Just read the fluffy ask—Aww, Dark and Space bonding! LOVE that Dark can’t cook, but he tries darn it! Turkey sandwiches (w/ mustard) ftw.
Pls consider–
Father-son bonding—Trying to make a grilled cheese sandwich.
Space turns on the gas stove (which is like an ancient artifact to him, but I digress), “Okay, so, we got our heat-source.” He chimes, putting a clean pan on top of the burner.
Dark stands right beside Space. His eyes squint at the pan as he attempts to focus on Space’s commentary, “Heat-source, understood.” Focus drifting, he takes a glance at the other ingredients lined up on the counter. Obviously, the next step would be—
“Butter,” Space says matter-of-factly. He uses the appropriate knife (*ahem* Wilford and Yancy) to slice off a piece from a butter stick. It goes into the pan, “See, the butter is going to tell you when it’s time to put the bread on. It’ll start to sizzle—If the butter smokes, you need to turn down your heat.” Space had picked this recipe specifically, because it was mainly visual. You just need a little clue here and there to get a grilled cheese right. Dark couldn’t be /that/ bad.
The pair watch the butter begin to heat up and bubble in the pan. Pleased, Space gives a nod as he moves onto his next step, “Now, the bread.”
Dark takes initiative by getting the slices of white bread out from the packaging by the counter. Wonder-bread. If he could even call it bread, it was so full of sugar. However, Space insisted that a /classic/ grilled cheese held a certain level of continuity. Apparently, this way of making one still holds out even in Space’s time. Nevertheless, Dark couldn’t help but miss the simplicity of food preparation of his time. Bread was bread. Orange juice was orange juice. Even the cocaine seltzers that Benjamin served, they were exactly as told. Nothing more or less…
Space interrupts Dark’s internal monologging, “Now, the bread goes directly on top of the butter. It’ll begin to caramelize on contact, so we’re going to pay close attention to make sure it doesn’t burn.” He emphasizes the last part, remembering a few glimpses of Dark trying to cook. It’s a wonder how Dark is allowed in the kitchen unsupervised.
Hopefully, he isn’t going to regret trying to teach a few centuries-old, 3-in-1 glitch man how to cook…Maybe.
There might be plenty of grilled cheese (attempts) in Space’s future.
—Melody anon
XD AWWWWWW LOVE IT
It takes so many attempts lol. Somehow the timing, when he lets Dark take over, is always just off enough to burn it. Maybe not always severely, maybe sometimes just mildly. But always burnt. It's almost impressive.
(They figure out its sort of caused by Darkstar aura, a-la the grass burning under his boot at the end of DAMIEN, and spandex some time working around that. Now the bonding includes testing gadgets that neutralize that affect!)

Take My Hand (Say You Need Me Still)
A Daredevil Fic (Matt/Foggy, Girl!Foggy. Pre-Slash)
Summary  : Look, getting shot is just the New York experience. You haven’t lived  unless you’ve been held at gunpoint at least once. And if you save  someone doing it? Hey, bonus!
First Chapter: AO3
“I had to exist without you”,

Foggy had whispered those words as if in a trance. Face turned towards the sky as if speaking to no one in particular. Her words had been unprompted. They had been simply been enjoying each other’s company that day after a long work week and a chance to relax at a barbeque courtesy of Luke and Claire.
It was a month after Fisk and 7 before the incident at the police station. Matt remembers the both of them lying on a mattress futon and a pile of duvets on the roof of Colleens Dojo. Foggys tone had been soft but Matt was so focused on her that it was enough to drown out the other sounds around them. Luke and Danny laughing where they were manning the barbeque grill. Misty and Karen comparing notes on Jessica’s recent client which she didn’t appreciate but didn’t seem to mind enough to make them stop as she nursed her Jack Daniels on the edge of their conversation. Misty talking sports of all things with Colleen who was wholly and very competitively invested in the New York Yankees.
But they had all turned into peripheral noise to Matt. He had pushed himself up. Fully turned his body towards her. Something Matt didn’t really have to do since there was no visual component in his interactions with the people around him but Foggy had always appreciated the gesture. A sign of assurance from her best friend that his attention was completely and undividedly on her. For her. She’s always been proud of herself for being able garner that kind of reaction from him.
But at that moment Foggy herself had seemed distracted. Even without being able to see it, Matt could tell that her eyes weren’t directed at him. She felt distant. Sounded distant. A mirror of what Matt had been feeling ever since he came back.
He hadn’t really understood why at the time. After all he’d gotten everything he ever wanted. Even more. His firm, his partner, his identity and most importantly his friends. Not just Karen and Foggy. His best friend had made sure of that when she dragged him to Jessica’s place and sat outside her office slash apartment door while Jess tore Matt a new one over what he’d done and proceeded to throw him out with a door slam so hard the glass panel shook.
That night Jessica called his burner later telling him to meet her on a roof top (What is it with roof tops?) because she needed his ears and to quote her “You owe me. Your ass better be here in an hour”.
Matt was there before the hour was up with 20 minutes to spare.
“Fucking Boy scout”, Jess had muttered under her breath but Matt smiled and tossed her a brand-new grey scarf.
“It’s the cheapest one at Walmarts”, he had said but the softness of the material and the tag said otherwise.
Matt hadn’t needed prompting to show up on Luke’s apartment door next and meeting Danny at the Dojo where the millionaire had proceeded to wipe the floor with him in hand to hand.
“I let you win”, Matt had panted, trying to catch his breath.
“Keep telling yourself that”, Danny sniped back, though there was no heat in his words, as he threw him a water bottle.
Matt woke up the next day sore, bruised and unable to wipe the grin off his face when he showed up at the office that morning to an array of extremely expensive looking bouquets congratulating their re-opening and heavily perfumed because Danny Rand is a passive aggressive dick.
But it also came with a 6 digit cheque from Rand Industries so none of them were about to complain. “A gift, from Rand Industries to the Firm of Nelson and Murdock. To hopefully new and better beginnings” was written on the envelope it came with.
Matt wished it had been as easy with Foggy. Not that either of them had given any resistance in efforts of reconciliation. But there were no ‘How To’s’ they could follow telling them exactly how to do that. No guidebooks detailing the steps needed to take to rebuild a bond that had gone through so much. The awkward bubble between them seemed to only grow more and more, stretched thin and fragile and so vulnerable to the slightest touch.
Until that night when after a few bottles of beers and a feeling of relaxed contentment that only came with a full stomach, Foggy whispered her confession as if asking for contrition.
Her words, though morose, held no acrimonious judgment. But the vestige of pain in them was bare and it had twisted Matt’s insides to hear it. It was such a simple phrase but it held so much and he knew instantly that it had been something she’d been keeping quiet. Out of shame, thinking that it was something she didn’t have a right to feel. Afraid that it might make Matt more distant.
But it was an admittance that Matt had realized he needed to hear. An honest fearless truth that was not spoken to condemn but instead a plea for him to understand where she stood. For him to know she was still bearing pain that she herself found difficult to admit. So afraid that Matt would recoil from her for it. But how could he. How could he punish such fearlessness when he knows how much he had taken from Foggy?
Both of them had made mistakes, but Foggy had been so patient. Matt had already taken and asked so much from Foggy who still tried his best to welcome him back with open arms. But Foggy had never been one to tip toe around Matt about anything. A habit that could be aggravating at times but it was always a cost he had been willing to pay for the intimacy that was brought forward from it.
And this was Foggy begging Matt to have that chance for intimacy again. As if she didn’t deserve to ask for it and it was a failure on Matts part that Foggy would harbour such hesitation.
Even through all his secrets and fear, Foggys openness about where she stood in regards to Matt had always been a beacon for him. A guide to teach him how to be a friend. Lessons he’d been deprived off the second his dad died. Matt had cast out the hope of ever achieving such a relationship. Already given up early on at the thought that he could ever receive the kind of easiness that Foggy offered and it was a miracle for him that she did. A miracle that they had met in Columbia and a miracle that through all Foggys annoying habits, that he’d been open to give her a chance. A choice that he would never have made if Foggy had been anything less than who she was. She in of itself was a miracle to him and Matt was deeply torn that he had made Foggy ever feel otherwise.
“I had only ever wanted a friend”
Foggys words from the night of their huge fight came back to him and while it might have been said in less than stellar circumstances, he knows even then that it had rung with truth. Foggy had never asked for anything more. How could he have failed to give her something so simple.
After a while Foggy finally turns her face towards Matt. He tastes salt in the air but doesn’t move to address it because he needs to focus right now. To really listen and conscientious, to what Foggy was trying to say. A lack in communication had after all been their downfall. Too much resentment over kept secrets and rancorous unspoken anger.
But there’s none of that hanging in between them now. Instead, Matt heard what wasn’t spoken loud and clear.
“Don’t leave. Don’t make me go through that again. Stay. Here, with me”
Matt doesn’t think there’s anything he can say that could live up as an answer to that so instead he creeps his hand forward to grasp Foggys in a sincere hope that his own words would ring with the same vulnerable truth that Foggy had offered.
  “I’ll try”
*
Things had gotten better afterward. The honesty Foggy openly shows was an invitation for Matt to do the same. Not a demand and Matt will forever be grateful for that. But even so Matt still walks on eggshells at first. Not knowing what he was allowed to reveal. What was welcomed and what was not. Foggy like always, had put Matt at ease the way she always could.
It starts with an open invite to a home cooked dinner where Foggy made it clear that she wanted to know more about Matt’s abilities.
“If you want that last brownie you’re gonna have to impress me Murdock and for extra motivation, it’s a corner piece”
Matt had laughed, “I’m not sure what you’re asking here Nelson. I’m not sure I want to. The last time you gave me a dare I ended up doing the chicken dance in the college cafeteria”
“Boohoo, you deserved it after that stunt you pulled with the waffle incident. I’ve still got the burn marks to prove it. Now enough excuses and man up Murdock”
The banter might have sounded harsh to a stranger’s ears but it held such a familiarity that Matt rejoiced every second and every word. But despite all that he was still so scared to ruin what they were trying to rebuilt. Scared to run Foggy off with ‘too much’.
Foggy had again, nudged him into it gingerly and with such patience that Matt hadn’t found it in him to deny her.
She asked him to talk about what he could taste in the food she’s cooked. At first Matt was afraid to criticize but Foggy had started doing so herself. Once after a dinner Chicken Paprikash of all things, she asked if Matt sensed the yoghurt that used was close to getting bad. Matt tentatively had noted that it wasn’t rancid but it was definitely way past its prime days. Foggy wasn’t annoyed, instead she breaks the tension and laughing, jabbing about how horrible some parts about Matts senses must be. About the embarrassing things he’s had to endure.
To Matt’s surprise, the topic of his abilities became a favourite thing to talk about whenever they spent time together.
“Are you saying everytime I found you staring into space in your room it was because you got contact high from your stoner neighbour 5 rooms away from your dorm?”
Matt had groaned and dropped his forehead onto his folded arms in embarrassment. It was enough of an answer Foggy needed.
“Oh my God, you turned them in! Matthew Michael Murdock you tattle tale”
“It wouldn’t be such a problem if they didn’t get stoned every night. It was barely a secret anyway. The corridor reeked from it and personally I think I did a public service”
“Did you snitch on me bringing snacks into the library too?”
“No Foggy, that was all the crumbs you didn’t bother cleaning off your dress everytime we passed the librarian. She could probably smell the Cheeto dust on your fingers a mile away”
“I knew it! You threw away my Cheetos stash didn’t you!”
“They’re like cheese dust bombs! They were more chemicals than actual food. I did you a favour”
“And here I was thinking Tanya was stealing them from my bag during civics”
“The girl who sat beside you? Oh, she stole food from you all the time. You left your bag unzipped, it was inevitable”
 “And you never told me?!?!”
“Most of the things you had in there were junk food. It’s no wonder you were on a sugar high all the time”
“In my defence, Redbull and Twinkies are a perfectly good way to combat law school stress”
 “Oh god the Twinkies!”
“Don’t you dare go after Twinkies!”
Just like that the tension brought from the elephant in the room that was Matts powers was broken. Foggy made a game out of Matt trying to guess all the ingredients she’s used on nights that she cooked. Matt had initially protested on the unfairness of it all but eventually stepped up to the challenge cause he’s a competitive bastard and Foggy knows it.
“How am I supposed to know what kind of nuts you used in the Pad Thai??? I can barely afford anything other than ground nuts”
“Excuses. You haven’t suggested anything else either”
“I know you used Italian basil instead of Thai”
 “Whats the difference?”
“Thai basil has a sharper taste”
 “And more expensive”
“Authenticity is important. We don’t want to get sued for cultural appropriation and all”
“Oh look at me, I’m Matt Murdock and I can only eat fancy organic Thai Basil”
“It doesn’t matter, I won. Now give me my brownie Nelson!”
 “Bite me Murdock!”
Matt won 9 times out of 10. The game was rigged and they both knew it but they usually ended up splitting the last piece of whatever dessert they had for the night anyway so it was never really about winning. Not for either of them anyway. On nights when there were no sugary delicacies waiting for them after their meal, if Matt won, he got to pick what they did after dinner. Watch a show, listen to an audio-book, play games before he had to leave for the night for patrol. Foggy never complained except for an over exaggerated whine or two at Matts predictability.
It’s fun, intimate. They don’t just focus on the fun stuff either. Matt had wanted to get even more intimate. He was tired of carrying all his secrets and for once he was the one who took the leap to trust that foggy wouldn’t run.
So, one night Matt finds himself stumbling into Foggys apartment after patrol. It was closer and he had a concussion. He was surprised when Foggy didn’t freak out like he expected and actually knew how to handle the situation. Like she’d prepared for it. She got some lessons from Claire who owed her for helping Luke. She doesn’t talk about when she started doing it or why. Matt didn’t know if he was ready to hear the answer either.
“You know, I could always keep my window unlocked. If you ever… ya know, need to come over”
“I don’t want to wake you”
“I always sleep late anyway and besides; I’d rather know you have somewhere to go if you need to then........”, Foggy trails off but Matt doesnt need to be a psychic to know where her thoughts had went.
“I don’t want to make thing’s hard for you", he says back and they both know he didnt just mean waking her up late.
“Matt, I want to.”, Foggy had said, firmly as she smoothed the Arnica cream over his newest bruise.
Her heart had beaten with a steady thud of truth, truth, truth.
It was comforting to know that Foggy wasn’t soaked in fear and disapproval the way she used to be before, and he did come over sometimes. Once or twice a week to get his ribs bandaged properly when they were bruised or some cuts stitched. Matt can tell Foggy’s nervous and queasy about the stitching but she soldiers on anyway and it reminds him of Maggie telling him how she had done the same for his dad when they were together and the similitude makes a roll of warmth coil around his insides like a soothing balm. It feels right.
He realizes when he gets home as is drifting off to sleep, that it’s not something he’s ever had with Elektra either.
“Foggy, I need to tell you something”
 “Hmmm?”
 “About midland circle”
 “Matt-”
“I need you to know, why I stayed. Why I didn’t try to come back.”
 “Matt, you don’t-“
“Foggy please. I need to do this”
 “Ok Matty. Fire away"
“It wasn’t about you, or Karen. Maybe that’s hard to believe. I’m not gonna lie and say it wasn’t selfish of me because it was. I hurt you. You gave me the suit and you trusted me and I let you down. But you have to know Foggy, it wasn’t because of you”
Matt had ducked his head in shame
“Truth is I wasn’t thinking about anything else at that moment. I’m impulsive, we both know that. You’ve always known that. I was so overwhelmed by the fact that she was alive that I-“
 He gulped.
“Did I tell you how she died? The first time?”
 “No”
“It was because of me. She took a knife to the chest for me and she died in my arms and it was my fault Foggy. It was my fault. The worst part is, she’d told me beforehand that she wanted to stay with me. She wanted to try and she died in my arms because of me. I heard her heartbeat stop and it was because of me and I couldn’t… I couldn’t move Foggy."
He remembers feeling his eyes water, struggling to keep them from flowing into streams down his cheeks. But he couldn’t stop the way his voice choked.
“And I heard her heart beat that day when I found out she was alive. The way she moved, the familiar scent of her and how warm she was whennever she was close. She was so alive and I was desperate to save her this time. When she refused to leave Midland, I couldn’t leave her behind. I couldn’t leave her alone. I couldn’t let her die because I couldn’t save her for the second time. I couldn’t foggy. Everything was falling apart around us but I held her and she was so alive. I couldn’t let that go. I’m sorry Foggy. I’m sorry I hurt you. But I can’t be sorry for staying with her”
 “Matt I’m not angry”
 He’d perked up at that.
“I mean I was initially. Went through all 5 stages of grief. Thought a lot about beating you up if I ever saw you again. Blamed myself for letting you go. For not giving you a stronger reason to stay-”
 “Foggy-”
“I understand why you did it now. But back then all I could think about was how you’d left me. You broke your promise and you left us and I kept having nightmares of how you were probably still alive and had just fucked off to god knows where with her. It took me too long to realize I’d rather you were alive then dead even if you had”
“You had a right to say no when I asked for help. I stole your wallet. I took advantage of you the second I saw you again. It was a dick move on my part”
“Oh, trust me, it definitely was and I’m not gonna let you forget that for a very long time. You owe me so many favors. But I got you back Matt. I’d asked for only one thing ever since I lost you and I got you back. How could I turn my back on that? You’re so good Matt. I know you don’t believe it but you are. Even if I was pissed, I knew you were doing things for a good reason. I knew it was because you were helping people and I’m a damned lowlife if I even thought of turning my back on that. I’m not angry at you Matt. You’re my best friend. I’m not gonna lie and say I’m not gonna stomp off again if we get into another huge fight. But I can promise I’ll always try to come back. Maybe it’s not right for me to ask you to trust that. I know enough about your past to know that’s not an easy thing for you to do……...”
“You’re the one person I trust the most, Foggy”
 “Karen-”
“- is a good friend. But she hasn’t stuck around and followed me into making stupid decisions for the past ten years of my life. If there’s anything I regret, it’s not trusting you with my secrets. For hurting you with them. If there’s anything I’d redo it would be that”
“We don’t know if I would’ve been open to accepting that back then. Heck, I don’t even know what I would’ve done if you did tell me. You had good reason to worry”
“After everything, I should’ve taken the chance. There’s no one I trust more in this a world than you Foggy. Maybe that’s hard to believe considering how many promises I’ve broken. But I’m going to do everything I can to keep this one"
 “…… Thank you, Matt”
It had taken everything in him to admit it, but after all they’d been through. After all Foggy had given him. Foggy had earned the right to it. That part of him. He expects to feel fragile and small afterwards but instead he feels lighted. Just like before, it felt right. This was the path they were destined to be on. The path they both have worked hard for. Foggy had returned his vulnerable revelation by sidling up to him. Intertwining their fingers and leaning to the side to place a soft peck on his temple. Matt couldn’t find it in him to pull away. They stayed that way in silent comfort until they’d both nodded off. Her head fitted to the crook of his neck and Matt’s own resting on hers.
Matt had woken up first the next morning to Foggys head on his lap. A soft and unladylike snore whistling pass her lips and he remembers how it had annoyed him to no end through their first year of law school, on nights when Foggy had fallen asleep from exhaustion on Matt’s bed after a night of unending studying with him in his room. But after a while it had become a familiar comfort, accompanied by the beating thrum in her chest. An unexpected lullaby especially on nights when both of them were overwhelmed. Matt had a single room and Foggys roommate was never around, preferring to stay at her boyfriend’s place most nights. They switched between each other’s room every other night, more and more often but it never felt invasive.
Matt hopes Foggy knows how important her presence had been for him at the time.
He hadn’t attempted to wake her up that morning from her peaceful slumber even as his legs felt numb from the weight. Instead, and he stupidly hadn’t realized why he’d done it at the time, he found himself gliding his knuckles on her cheek, realizing in that moment how long it had been since they’d been this close. How much he had missed it. Touch starved in a way he hadn’t felt in a long while since they met.
This progress, this newly attained intimacy doesn’t stop. There is a relief in being able to talk to his best friend again about every part of him that he had always feared she wouldn’t accept. Not just about the heavy, things either. Even the small, minute, careless details.
To Foggys credit, she bares herself raw the same way he does.
“How did you get so good at cooking?”
“I take offence to that. I was always a talented cook”
“Pancakes and grilled cheese sandwiches maybe.”
“Hardy har. And you can boil an egg, good for you.”
“Seriously, curry noodles? I didn’t think you even knew where the spice section was”
“It was… it was actually after Midland. I couldn’t sleep sometimes and I’d stay up watching cooking channels and I gave in and just started actually making them myself. I started small but I got used to handling things after a while. It was actually… therapeutic”
 “Foggy…. I-“
“Matt stop, seriously. I meant what I said. I’d rather have a life with you and all the adrenaline fueled bullshit, then a quiet life without you. Always. So, don’t worry, ok? We’re good. I promise”, Foggy had ended her little speech by reaching out to tap her fingers in a comforting rhythm on his knuckles and Matt had asked himself for the hundredth time since he got back, what he’d done to deserve such loyalty.
“Also you’re washing the dishes and paying for lunch tomorrow”
Matt had let out a burst of laughter, “Haven’t I been paying for lunch anyway?”
“And you’ll keep paying for lunch until further notice. Besides, you’re getting a free home-cooked dinner almost every other night so I’m not going to hear a peep out of you”
He’d raised his hands in a mollifying gesture, “No arguments here”
“And none of that healthy stuff too”
 “Damn"
The catholic part of him that latched on to guilt too close, wasn’t satisfied. Not even close. He’d done too much, made too many mistakes. He didn’t deserve what Foggy and even Karen for that matter, were giving him. A step onto green grass that promised him sanity in exchange for something as simple as him pulling down his walls for them. To not push them away. And if that’s what Foggy asked for then Matt was going to teach himself to give it to her, even as he he itched from old habits to pull back behind said walls.
It takes 6 months for them to go through all the unsaid baggage that had been floating in the water like leftovers from crash created by their past mistakes. But at the end of it all, Foggy poked her head into his office again and told him to hurry up if he wanted her to do any actual cooking.
“I feel like I’m being sabotaged”,
“You don’t need me to do that”
 “Well, that’s not very helpful”
“I mean, I didn’t tell you to try make dinner rolls from scratch, did I?”, Matt had said with a tone of faux pettiness.
“That was not my fault! I didn’t know cats could smell the yeast all the way from the alley! Ruined a perfectly batch of dough. I spent 20 minutes kneading!”
“I told you to close the window. Fair is fair, I didn’t know cats liked yeast either, I’ll give you that. So, what’s on the menu tonight?”
“Well, you made Italian last week and I’ve been exchanging gossip with Mrs Yong for a while now….”
“Getting tips from your Vietnamese neighbour is cheating”
“Do you want to eat or not?”
 “I’m guessing Pad Thai?”
“Couldn’t afford your oh so expensive cashews that you just have to have. Its Pho!! We are having Pho tonight! I spent 6 hours simmering a potful when I was going through the Jenner case last week and now, I’ve got enough frozen pho in my freezer to serve 8! I mean, I did have enough for 8. It’s more like 3 now. Maybe 3 and a half”
“Is that what you were passing to Karen and Mrs Adli yesterday?”
“Karen needs to eat more if she keeps spending her nights consorting with Jessica Jones. God knows what diet Jones is on. I gave Karen extra to pass to her so hopefully she’ll see it as incentive to keep giving us tips. We definitely can’t afford her”
“I’m sure you can charm a few more favours out of her. And Mrs Adli?”
“Oh yeah, her kids sick were with the flu and from what Mrs Yong told me, Pho has magical healing powers that can beat chicken soup any day”
“You didn’t eat the rest, did you?”
“Boo hoo, shame on you. Unlike you, I know how to bribe our friends. I gave some to Claire and Brett. He looked like I was trying to poison him”
“To be fair you did once”
“I was 5! He wanted to play Mommies and Daddies and I might have been overzealous about preparing dinner”
“You know if he finds out you told me he’ll have you thrown in Rykers himself”
“Which is why if you want any of that Pho yourself, you’ll keep yourself quiet you dick”
The air between them had turned so light and easy. Every morning Matt woke up beaming with joy at the simple thought of being able to just be with her so close throughout his day and every night he was lulled to sleep by the memories left from it.
There were no more walls. No more fear or doubt. Not with her. Not anymore.
“I went to see Maggie today.”
“Yeah? How is she? I haven’t met her yet”
“She’s fine. She wanted to wish me Happy Birthday”
“That sounds nice”
“Yeah……. She gave me her ring. The one my dad gave her. It was one of the few things she had from my dad and she wanted me to have it”
Foggy had stayed silent for a moment before responding, “That was nice of her”
“Yeah. It’s nothing fancy. Doesn’t have a diamond or anything. It’s just a smooth gold band. But she said my dad saved up for months to get it. It sounds just like him. She wanted to talk with me a bit longer but I just…. Couldn’t. I think I hurt her feelings when I left”
“You don’t owe her anything Matt.”
 “It was rude”
“Matt, hey, I need you to listen ok. I need you to listen to my heart. Are you listening?”
Matt remembered how his throat had tightened so he had just nodded to the question.
“I love you Matt. You’re my best friend. I will always love you. But you need to know, hey, listen buddy. You need to know that you never have to earn that from me. Not from me, not from Maggie, not from Stick, not from anybody”
 “I could’ve tried harder”
“You shouldn’t have had to. You were just a kid”
 “Didn’t stop them from leaving”
“And it was their fault, not yours. You didn’t deserve any of it.”
“I’d asked them to make it stop.”
 “What?”
“It was after Midland. There were two guys, trying to hijack a car. I couldn’t beat them so I asked them to make it stop. To just.. end it.... end me. It was so pathetic Foggy-”
Mat hadn’t realized she’d moved from her seat until her arms were around him. Her grasp was gentle but Matt got the feeling that hell or heaven couldn’t tear her away no matter how hard they tried.
She was on her knees beside him where he was sitting on the couch. One hand pulling his body to her chest and the other caressing the side of his head. Nose buried in his hair, whispering softly, “No Matty, no. Never. God, you’re so good Matt. So brave. So strong. It’s ok to not be sometimes. I’m here. I promise. I’m right here”
For some reason, Matt had let out a startled laugh but he had felt something wet streaming down his face and suddenly he was choking on sobs. His own arms folded around her middle and he lets go. Lets himself sink into her, head buried into her shoulder, not thinking even for a second that it would be enough to cover up how loudly he was crying. But Foggy hadn’t said a word. Once upon a time he might have felt indignant at the idea of being so vulnerable with someone like that. He hadn’t been this open since Elektra and look how that turned out. Elektra herself had been different. He loved her. He still loves her. Loves how comfortable he felt in her presences. Unguarded and free.
But unguarded and comfortable was different than allowing himself to feel and appear weak. To let someone see the broken and jagged pieces that made him who he was and not be afraid to be judged for it. Elektra never made him feel like home. At least not the kind of home his dad had given him as a kid. Safe. At ease.
 Loved.
They fell asleep that night like that. Lying on the couch, Foggys arms wrapped around him tights and close. His head tucked in the dip of her clavicles. Curled into her and knowing with absolute certainty that she wouldn’t ever let him go.
Matt woke up the next morning to the smell of pancakes and the annoying tap of Foggys fingers on his cheeks.
“Wake up sleepyhead. The pancakes are getting cold and I don’t want to hear you whining about it”
For a second Matt had refused to open his eyes even as the corner of his lips were pulled up.
 “Five more minutes mom”
“Very funny. Catch me making you breakfast again you ungrateful prick”
Matt had let out a disgruntled groan but relented to push himself up with an over exaggerated stretch.
“You owe me groceries for this”, Foggy sing songs, pushing a plate stacked with pancakes, dripping with an unhealthy amount of syrup just the way Matt liked it. It’s one of his most unhealthiest guilty pleasures but fuck him if every bite didn’t have him melt with sinful pleasure.
“It’s the least you could do with how you had half my ass hanging off the couch last night”, Foggy continues as she digged into her own stack.
“It’s not my fault your apartment is so warm. I was practically cooking”, Matt had clapped back but was half-hearted and said through a juvenile muffled mouthful of his breakfast.
“Price of being the little spoon my friend”
Matt indulged her with an eye roll but he’s much too distracted with his breakfast to keep up the banter. Foggy sneakily pushes the extra plate pancakes forward followed by the bottle of organic syrup that was way too obscenely expensive for her budget but so very worth it to see Matt light up animatedly with a child-like glee at the taste of it on his delicate taste buds.
They had continued their banter a bit more over a steaming cup of coffee and all the while Matt realizes in that moment that he felt truly and incandescently happy with his life and where he was then compared to how where he was just six months before and a large part of it was because of Foggy.  Karens acceptance of him had been great. But foggy knew him more than anyone. It’s Foggy that despite their decade long friendship, he’d disappointed and hurt and let down over and over and the fact that Foggy was still there, a constant unerring affirmation of his worth. That if there was someone in his life that could love and stick around the way foggy had then life was definitely worth living no matter what it threw at him. Foggy who’d given something no one else had. Not even Elektra.
Matt truly and utterly realize that Foggy at that moment, after so much time and effort on both their parts, truly knew him better now, more than anyone ever did. And with it Foggy had given him something he hasn’t felt since his dad died
And its not just the happiness. It’s a deep rooted and affection of what they have. Of what they’ve built through it all. . It’s a fondness. Its an appreciation. It’s a love that has driven right down to his core, so deep that its become part of his being. Its… wait… oh…. OH….. oh shit.

Science in the Sky: How do Hot Air Balloons work?
Hot air balloons are the simplest version of human flight. Invented in 1783, they really haven’t changed much over the years. All you really need to fly is the balloon (called an envelope), a means of burning fuel, and a basket.
Hot air balloons work on the scientific principal that warm air rises, compared to the cooler air around it. As the air inside the envelope is heated, it’s warmed up, and is warmer than the outside air. This is how the balloon is lifted off the ground, and stays in the air. As the balloon gets higher up in the atmosphere, the temperature of the surrounding air drops, so the hot air of the balloon is able to keep the balloon afloat.
In all cases, the hot air is warmed by a burner, usually fueled by propane (like the stuff you’d use for an outdoor or camping grill, or some kinds of lanterns). Propane is a hydrocarbon chain, that is, it’s three carbons bonded in a line with hydrogens bonding to the carbons. Hydrocarbons are really effective at storing and releasing energy, which the release of energy we call combustion. Propane burns at ~3,600F, which is really hot, but really good when you want to heat a large amount of air pretty quickly, as in the case of trying to get a hot air balloon off the ground. To release hot air, there’s a vent at the top of the envelope that the pilot can open and close to either slow down while going up, or if the vent is open for a long time, the balloon starts to sink.
So how do you steer a hot air balloon? Well, you kind of don’t. You’re at the mercy of the wind, but wind isn’t consistent in the atmosphere. Have you ever watched clouds pass by in the sky? The clouds move because of wind in the upper parts of the atmosphere, but there isn’t necessarily wind at ground level, or wind in the same direction, or wind of the same strength. The wind changes at different heights in the atmosphere (well, until the atmosphere is too thin to have air currents, but that’s a lot higher up than a hot air balloon with people in it is going to go, since humans kinda need air and warmth to survive), so to go in different directions, a balloon pilot would burn more fuel to catch a wind current above them, or vent air to drop down to a wind current below them.
In short, hot air balloons are pretty cool if you want to go a short distance, or go no distance at all, or play a live show, but pretty terrible for long distance flight. Thank goodness we invented airplanes.

146. don’t look now (1936)
release date: november 7th, 1936
series: merrie melodies
director: tex avery
starring: tex avery (egbert), berneice hansell (cathleen, bear cubs), tommy bond (devil, cupid cuckoo bird), martha wentworth (woman woodpecker), billy bletcher (devil cuckoo bird)
Tumblr media
the first of quite a few cartoons where tex avery has supplied his own voice. the only other directors i can think of who have done voices in cartoons are bob clampett (who was also the source of the famous BEOWIP/BOIP sound effects) and cal howard (who would voice gabby in clampett’s get rich quick porky. ironically, tex avery would supply his laugh in a cal howard and cal dalton cartoon, porky’s phoney express.) regardless—it’s valentine’s day, and cupid is itching to do some matchmaking. but, as isaac newton taught us, for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. in this case, a little devil is the opposite reaction, ready to break some hearts.
Tumblr media
it’s valentine’s day, as indicated by a valentine card popping up on the screen reading “will you be my valentine?” fade to a beautiful layout of dan cupid’s humble abode, a fittingly heart shaped home, mailbox... even the butterflies flittering about have noticeably heart shaped wings. the interior is no different than the exterior: cupid’s asleep in his heart shaped bed, when a heart shaped cuckoo bird pops out of a heart shaped cuckoo clock, calling “time’s a-wastin’!”
Tumblr media
cupid wakes up in an instant and bounds over to his exposed shower (reminiscent of a chemical shower in your local biology lab), quickly dousing himself one water and toweling off. he pulls his arrow holder out from the umbrella stand, tearing off a page of the calendar. “well! st. valentine’s day! my big day!” a cute and clever visual as cupid heads outside, right to his garden, where rows of arrows sprout up from the soil. cupid grabs his lawn mower and makes his way across the field, the arrows neatly piling into his holster over his head.
a good bit of personality is exuded as cupid prepares for the big day with some target practice. first, he shoves a pile of playing cards inside a toaster. he pulls the lever down with his foot, and as he engages in his airborne game of 52 pickup, he shoots numerous arrows at the cards, pinning them all against a tree in the shape of a heart, with an ace of hearts right in the middle. to further display some naïve pride (bordering cockiness), cupid fires an arrow through a hole in the tree, the arrow curving and returning to him through a hollow log. placing an apple on his head in the meantime, cupid still manages to hit his target successfully. and for good measure, he engages in a quick round of a duck shooting carnival game. he pings all of his wooden ducks down in an instant, save for one, who panics and attempts to flee the arrow. nevertheless, he too gets hit. an amusing gag with a good balance of cute and funny. satisfied, cupid embarks, leaving a sign on his front gate that reads GONE HUNTING.
Tumblr media
meanwhile, we have a very clever parallel with a strong sense of juxtaposition. now focus on a little devil cherub, whose house is almost exactly like cupid’s, though adorned with foreboding, “evil” furniture, including an asbestos pillow. his cuckoo clock, a boiler, opens up to reveal a billy bletcher voiced bird who announces “crime marches on!” the devil awakens and hops out of his bed, which is actually one giant frying pan (or burner, or grill, or whatever you want to call it.) he too takes a shower, bathing in the cool, refreshing red hot flames pouring out of the shower head. already the parallels are humorous and clever, heightened by how obvious they are. the devil repeats the same calendar shtick as cupid, declaring “well! st. valentine’s day! my big day!” outside, the devil’s mood isn’t nearly as cheery as cupid. he scoffs at the audience, kicking a line of cans with malice as he trudges along. “aw, this valentine day gag is the bomb! love, kisses, sweethearts, sissy stuff!”
Tumblr media
regardless of opinion on valentine’s day, it’s undeniable that love is in the air, as displayed by two flirtatious turtles, the guy begging for the girl’s affection. thankfully, cupid is just around the corner. cupid launches into “don’t look now”, detailing about how happy lovebirds will be once struck with his fated arrows. while the doting turtle is in the midst of a maurice chevalier impression, his girl gets struck by cupid’s arrow, and suddenly reciprocates his feelings, literally diving into the frontside of the turtle’s shell. smooth and highly amusing animation as the two turtles swing around together in one turtle shell envelope, picking up the lyrics. a gag that would be similarly used to a higher degree in tortoise wins by a hare, the two lovebirds walk side by side in the shell, both going inside and popping out the other end, now walking on their hands, their heads sticking out where their tail(s) should be and their legs where the head(s) should be. very smooth and subtle animation. i’m not too great with my animator indemnifications this early, but i’d guess chuck jones animated this scene, seeing how fluid it is.
jolly little cupid sings a few more bars, when the devil joins in, ready to spread his own love. two yokel bears bashfully dote on a log, ripe for the devil’s picking. the male bear (named egbert), voiced by tex avery, guffaws “will ya—gosh, huh huh, will ya—“, interrupted by berneice hansell’s squeaky voice urging him to go on. just in time for the devil to swoop in, whispering in the girl’s ear: “will ya go sit on a tack, ya old horse face?”
Tumblr media
it seems there was either a cut made here, or just a startlingly awkward transition as we jump cut to the devil laughing, the woman and the log out of screen. “i’ve got something here that’ll fix these lovesick mugs! take a gander at this!” the devil takes off his bowler hat and shows off the inside contents: blonde hairs, lipstick, bobby pins, and even a garter, all tucked away in little pouches pinned inside the hat. delightfully scandalous and just a great premise in general.
elsewhere, a woodpecker knocks on the door of a quaint little tree home (with his beak, of course.) out steps a lady woodpecker (presumably his wife), to which the husband holds up a card, nudging his sweetie. “hey, how do ya like to be my valentine, kiddo?” “do ya mean it?” “yes, i mean it!” the wife looks at the audience. “should i tell him?” just then, the devil pops up behind the man’s shoulder, gingerly placing a strand of blonde hair on his coat. the giant, oval shaped eyes of the devil give this scene away as bob clampett animation. the lovebirds embrace... but not for long. the wife takes note of the hair and grows rightfully furious, throwing a barrage of pots and pans at her double crossing husband. cupid happens to be strolling by, noticing the clamor. a simple fire of the arrow and the wife is back to her loving self, both woodpeckers happily kissing as they repeatedly peck each others beaks with hilarious speeds (and great jackhammer sound effects), so powerful that both of their beaks become bent and crumpled.
cupid’s next victim is a forlorn skunk, moping on a tree trunk. cupid pings her with his arrow, and in no time the little skunk is as giddy as ever. she saunters up to the local stand selling valentines, cooing “hello boys!” in an instant, the crowd disperses, leaving the poor skunk all to herself. tex avery would base a whole cartoon on the unsuccessful love lives of skunks with his short lil ‘tinker at MGM in 1948. to gain the affections of the girls, ‘tinker puts on his best frank sinatra impression, and the bobbysoxers swarm in droves.
back to egbert, the hayseed bear who desperately attempts to woo back his snooty girlfriend cathleen, strutting by with her nose in the air while he insist she’s got him in the wrong. cupid comes to the rescue once more, pinging both bears with his arrows. timing is hilariously succinct as they both pause a beat, dumbfounded, and then instantly exclaim “LET’S GET MARRIED!” with that, they rush away to prepare for the big celebration.
Tumblr media
after a time card that simply states “so—“, egbert strolls up to the front door of cathleen’s house, now donning a snazzy suit. he knocks on the door. “are ya ready, sweetie?” “just a minute!” cathleen may not be ready, but the devil sure is. he goes full out, tossing hairs, garters, bobby pins, lipstick marks, you name it. cathleen opens the door, sporting her wedding dress, when she finds her husband to be decked in every scandalous clue imaginable. a closeup reveals even more dirty yet fantastic details: panty hose, burlesque tickets, a phone number, a garter, and a face covered in lipstick. the entire situation is amplified in humor as egbert is completely unaware of his appearance. cathleen prepares to wallop egbert over the head with her bouquet, but another arrow from an offscreen cupid sends her down on egbert instead, practically sucking his face off.
Tumblr media
the devil is absolutely fed up with cupid’s meddling. “aw, hey, what’s the gag of ruining my fun!? ya sissy!” he three stooges (i’m coining that as a verb now) cupid, poking him in the eyes and slapping him silly, picking him up above his head and twirling him around before slamming him to the ground and sitting on top, pulling cupid’s leg as he cries out in pain. in retaliation, cupid fashions the devil’s tail like an arrow, shooting him with his bow and sending the devil flying into a tree, who curses at cupid incomprehensibly. his work now done, cupid leaves the devil to his miserable, temperamental self.
to quote hank williams, wedding bells are ringing in the chapel as egbert and cathleen march into the church, surrounded by a doting crowd. just as they stroll down the aisle, the devil is finally able to dislodge his tail from the tree, ready to spark mischief. he approaches two kids outside of the church, bribing them each with lollipops. “okey dokey. now, here’s your candy. all you gotta do is go in the church and say...”
we cut to the inside of the church before getting the full gist of the devil’s bribe, which is a lovely choice in set up. the officiator is asking the audience for any objections, while egbert shakes terribly, his legs knocking together in panic. even the organ is silent. no objections. content, egbert and cathleen exchange warm smiles, going in for the kiss, when...
Tumblr media
“daddy! daddy! daddy!” the two little bear cubs from before bound into the church, jumping right into a befuddled egbert’s arms. all bets are off on the wedding as cathleen storms out, dismissively throwing the bouquet in egbert’s face. a lovely detail as he still attempts to catch it hopelessly. the devil is absolutely thrilled, laughing in hysterics at his best job yet. unfortunately, he’s finally beat by his nemesis: cupid fires an arrow at the devil, and he too is struck with the love bug, his sour demeanor now replaced as he giddily floats along, grinning in a giant self parody of himself. what i love about tex’s cartoons is that everything feels like a parody of itself. it’s one extreme or the other.
Tumblr media
for the final time, cathleen is zinged again with cupid’s arrow, and she rushes back to egbert, kissing him and dragging him back in the church. activities are resumed as normal, the officiator going on like before. “i now pronounce you... uh oh.” he dives into a nearby pew, everyone turning their heads to see what the matter is. no time is wasted as everyone else takes cover, too. now donning a top hat and bib, the devil strolls down the aisle with the little lonely skunk from before. iris out.
a very entertaining cartoon that takes a little while to get momentum, but once it’s there it’s certainly there. it’s not too often you find a valentine’s day cartoon at warner bros (the only other one i can think of is frank tashlin’s the stupid cupid.) this certainly is a non traditional take, and a very good one at that. the scandalous humor was the best part of the short, whether it be the devil decking out egbert in garters and blonde hairs, or convincing two little kids to shout “daddy! daddy!” in the church. while the beginning was a bit slow, the parallels make up for it, and at least contribute some added interest. in all, a cartoon that’s worth watching, especially for the second half.

How Do Hand Warmers Work?
Tumblr media
Each time the climate gets somewhat crisp, we figure out how to go out into the world with little or nothing covering our hands – just to rapidly recollect that it is so awkward to have cold digits. Furthermore, at whatever point that occurs, we end up going to similar devices a seemingly endless amount of time after year: hand warmers.
Just something happened to us: while we were grateful for the little ponders, we weren't totally certain how they functioned. Indeed, we comprehended that it had something to do with compound responses, yet that was about its degree. This year, as opposed to being left pondering, we volunteered to do a little examination with respect to how, precisely, hand warmers truly work. Also, we've refined it down into the accompanying preliminary – you know, just on the off chance that anybody out there was pondering only equivalent to click here.
Kinds Of Warmers
Before we begin, it's significant that not all hand warmers are made the same. Certainly, there are some that are more across the board than others, yet they don't all work the equivalent. Indeed, in our exploration, we found that there are five genuinely basic kinds of hand warmers and every one of them works a smidgen in an unexpected way. The advantage of this information is twofold: it permits us to recognize the dangers and awards of any one sort of hand hotter and it enables us to settle on an educated choice concerning which types we need to spend our cash on and which we'd preferably maintain a strategic distance from. The five most regular sorts of hand warmers are as per the following: air actuated, supersaturated arrangement, lighter fuel, battery-controlled, and charcoal. We've separated how each capacities, just as certain upsides and downsides in the accompanying segments.
Air-Activated
Presumably the most widely recognized of all hand warmers – and furthermore maybe the most intriguing – are the expendable air-actuated assortment. These are the sorts you see while holding up in the checkout line of supermarkets in the colder pieces of the world. And keeping in mind that they appear to be so ordinary, they're quite intriguing a result of the substance responses through which they work. These little parcels of warmth simply holding on to be released are loaded up with 4 fixings that makes them work: iron powder, The one other vital fixing is air (oxygen), but at the same time the impetus kicks the entire procedure off.
In all honesty, the warmth made by these hand warmers is really a result of another common response: rusting. What happens is, the point at which you expel the little microporous bundles – which permit the free progression of air through their structure – from their defensive bundling, the iron powder inside starts to rust, in this way making heat. Be that as it may, the powder and air blend isn't sufficient to do only it. The procedure of oxidation really requires water, also – which is housed inside the normally permeable actuated charcoal. The nearness of water likewise accomplishes something different: it goes about as a conductor that permits the warmth to be spread out more uniformly.
At that point, it's sodium chloride's turn. Salt – similarly it capacities in the preparing of food – enhances the general response, quickening the entire procedure. However, the expansion of salt additionally can possibly accelerate the response and its power by something over the top (we're talking genuine burning, flares and everything). What's more, that is the thing that vermiculite deals with. This hydrated magnesium aluminum silicate – got from the latin term for 'little worm' – goes about as a cover. This is on the grounds that, when presented to warm, it grows, retaining the abundance head as it does. It's additionally fireproof, artificially idle, scentless, and lightweight. It's as simple as that. The greatest drawback to this shrewd tad of science, notwithstanding, is that it's very a one-time thing.
Supersaturated Solution
The primary guideline behind supersaturated arrangement hand warmers isn't not at all like air-initiated dispensable ones, however for one significant theoretical contrast: they can be reused. The purpose behind this is because of the synthetic substances inside the gel filling of this assortment. The gel is involved a sodium acetic acid derivation blend – one fit for cooling to room temperature without taking shape. Inside every one of these parcels, there's a little malleable metal plate that can be bowed or "popped," severing minuscule bits of metal which launch nucleation – the initial phase in a thermodynamic reaction. In request to make these reusable, the arrangement must be turned around into a fluid. That procedure makes the gel arrangement solidify once again into strong sodium acetic acid derivation trihydrate – a side-effect of which is, obviously, heat.
When that response has happened, in any case, twisting the metal plate won't create any further response. So as to make these reusable, the arrangement must be turned around into a fluid. Fortunately, that procedure is exceptionally straightforward: simply put the parcels into bubbling water. The warmth will make the arrangement disintegrate and stay a fluid as it chills ease off to room temperature. At that point, basically pop the metal plate again and the warming procedure should rehash itself. In the end, the compound bonds will separate and the parcels won't keep on working, yet you ought to have the option to get a lot of utilization out of them before at that point.
Lighter Fuel
One of the most significant things to think about lighter fuel hand warmers is that, while they express that they are "without fire," this doesn't mean they are liberated from burning. Indeed, they can make heat without a noticeable fire, yet to deliver that heat, they despite everything require a similar concoction response that consumes fuel and makes vitality and warmth. Take, for example, the Zippo hand hotter presented previously. It houses a lighter liquid repository – with an odd cotton-like work within it – that should be filled before activity. When the store is filled, a "synergist burner" unit is put on it. That unit brings the fuel into it and, when presented to fire (yes you need a different lighter or matches to begin the response), starts the ignition procedure without a noticeable flame. While they express that they are "sans fire," this doesn't mean they are liberated from burning. At that point, you just put the defensive packaging back over its head and you are allowed to put the hotter any place you need it.
There are a couple large drawbacks to this sort of hand hotter. For one, it takes a tad of effort to plan. You can't just snatch it and go. You need to top off the repository preceding each utilization and afterward hold up a few minutes before touching off it so as to allow the fuel to spread all through the store. Second, the way that it requires fuel at all can be seen as a drawback, as fuel costs cash and, by temperance of expecting to top it off, there's a potential for spillage with each utilization. At last, there's no sheltered method to stop the inner burning response. That implies, each time you top it off, you need to let the hand hotter run its course and consume the entirety of the fuel. On the whole, notwithstanding, this is as yet a progressively affordable and less inefficient alternative that dispensable hand warmers. It is important that this sort of hotter, because of burning, makes carbon monoxide, which can be unsafe – however shouldn't be an issue with not too bad ventilation or outside.
Battery-Powered
As a rule, these sorts of warmers have an utilitarian existence of around 6-hours per charge.Battery-controlled hand warmers are genuinely direct from a usefulness viewpoint – however the real science behind it we're certain is progressively muddled. In them, a battery-powered battery sends capacity to a locally available electrically resistive warming gadget, which changes over that vitality into heat. On basic gadgets, the degree of warmth is fixed. On increasingly complex ones, the client can choose the degree of warmth put out by the gadget. At that point, when the battery is spent, you should simply connect it and energize it back for resulting use. As a rule, these kinds of warmers have an utilitarian existence of around 6-hours per charge – which changes relying upon the degree of warmth yield. In any case, they are ostensibly the most conservative from an expense after-buy edge and are the most earth benevolent with regards to use.

Charcoal
Calling these 'pocket grills' strength sound a little whimsical, yet it's a genuinely exact portrayal. That is on the grounds that, all together for a charcoal hand hotter to work, you need to really consume charcoal – precisely like a BBQ. The case itself is normally a felt-shrouded unit, comparable fit as a fiddle and configuration to a shades case, worked from metal (to convey the warmth without consuming). For it to work, the client takes a bar of charcoal and strikes its closures to begin the consuming procedure, at that point places it within the unit and closes it. This makes it safe to place in your pockets. The drawback to this kind of hand hotter is quite self-evident: you need to consume charcoal. It's inefficient, grimy, and not reasonable at all. Also, since it's real ignition, it makes carbon monoxide – which can be risky to the client's wellbeing.

Hey again! Can I get an imagine where Tom sends the reader to London for the week to spend time with him. But she starts giving her attention to his brothers, parents, and even Tessa instead of him. They get into a little argument and Tom’s parents intervene which makes him storm off. So on her last day there, she surprises him with a date from the help of his family and they both apologize. Which ends in a kiss and her saying that she booked another week. I love your writing! Thanks again! :)
So this is a long boi and I decided to headcanon. 😋
So Tom was super giddy because this was the first time you were meeting his dad and youngest brother
His mom and the twins had been to America a few times and you’d met the three of them, but never his dad or Paddy
“Awe babe, you’re gonna love them.”
He’s holding your hand the whole flight cause he’s cute
Even when he’s asleep
So you land, and the both of you are jetlagged
And the first night’s pretty calm
You’re exhausted and his family makes dinner to show you what a real English meal is and you’re in love with all of them
You can see yourself being a permanent part of the family
So there’s playful banter between you and the twins curse they’re like… four
And Tom loves it cause his girl is loved by his family
And the next morning, he wakes to an empty bed and you in the kitchen with his mom making breakfast
Totally fine, of course the two of you would get together, you’re girls in a testosterone house
And then you’re helping Paddy with some arts and craft thing in his room
Sure, Paddy is the youngest and he likes you, great, this is one of the reasons you came here
Then you join the twins in wrestling in the backyard and the three of you end up laying on a trampoline they have and you’re all giggling and Tom’s feelin a little left out, but he’s fine
You’ve said all of three words to him all day
He kinda misses you and his heart breaks a little
But of course you don’t know this
Next its helping his dad grill steaks and tinfoil wrapped vegetables and loaded potatoes and this shit is bomb
His dad is the sweetest and loves to crack jokes and is asking questions about your life
He already feels like a sort of father figure which is real cool
Tom’s a little irritated and Nikki can sense something is off so he tells him to come help you guys
But when he makes it outside, you both kinda brush him off
“We’ve got it. Your girl is a great grill buddy.”
Tom just silently agrees and takes his place on the couch again, a little defeated
You eat and you talk to him then and he’s starting to feel better
But afterwards when you decide that, during the movie the family decided to watch, you were gonna abandon him with a blanket on the couch to lay on the floor with Tessa, he’s at his breaking point
He flips and storms off, leaving the six of you confused
You just look around the room and they all shrug
So you get up and follow and he’s in his room on his bed with his phone in his hand
“Ya okay babes? Got an emergency call?”
“Nope. Come to figure out what my deal is but you’re God damn oblivious.”
He’s F U M I N G and it radiates and as much as you know you shouldn’t poke the bear, you go for it
“Why am I oblivious?”
He just scoffs and shakes his head
“Because I bring you out here to meet Paddy and my dad and hang out with my family and you completely just abandon me.”
You just cross your arms
“You’re serious?”
“Yeah, I’m serious.”
By now you’re pissed because you’re getting along with his family and he’s jealous and pissed over it
“Wow, didn’t know I was dating a child.”
“Would you rather not be fucking dating me?”
“Don’t yell at me. I’m enjoying your family.”
“Yeah and just completely abandoning me. Just fo back downstairs.”
“I’m trying to resolve this.”
“No you’re not! Get the fuck out of my room.”
Him yelling brings his parents in and he’s going red in the face
“What’s goin on in here?” Dom quizzes, trying to diffuse the situation
“Nothing. She’s leaving.”
“Tom.” Nikki wants to scold him but she can see you’re pissed too
“Well what happened?”
“He’s pissed because he brought me here to meet Dom and Paddy, which I did, and I’m hanging out with you guys and I’m not paying every single second of my time to him.”
When you cross your arms, Tom clenches his jaw
“She hasn’t said shit to me all day. She’s been playing with the boys and all over you guys and I’m just back burner.”
“I’m sorry that I love your family like my own Tom!”
The boys have come in at this point and they watch until you start screaming at Tom to drag you out
He can still hear you yelling over the three of them and Nikki’s disappointed in her oldest
“She’s trying. It’s better than her not liking us at all.”
She leaves the room to help the boys contain you and Dom sits at the end of the bed
“I get where you’re coming from, but she’s the sweetest thing ever and she’s trying extremely hard and she’s accomplishing all of it. She’s amazing.”
After a few moments of silence, Dom gets up and leaves, closing the door behind him
Each of the boys offer their bed, but you sleep on the floor of Paddy’s room cause he’s the sweetest
And when Tom wakes up the next morning, he can smell breakfast
He just honestly, doesn’t wanna face you
He feels dumb
But he trudges downstairs and is weirded our by the fact he doesn’t hear anything but cooking bacon
And he only finds you in the kitchen
“Are they out back?”
You turn, a little startled at his surprising presence
“No, they went out to get food. I told them to give me like two hours… so you and I could talk and eat and have a little date thing.”
He’s embarrassed to be honest
He should be the one doing this for you
But you gesture to the set table and brush bacon onto his plate before serving him eggs benedict and sitting across from him with your own food
He gives a sympathetic smile
“Look-”
“Don’t… I’m not mad. I just-”
“No, I was a dick. I wanna apologize. I’m glad you’re bonding with each of my family members. I love that. I just… I’ve never been sort of… ignored by you like that before.”
“And I didn’t mean to. I’m sorry too Tom. I should have seen that you were upset.”
“I was being petty.”
“But you weren’t.”
The both of you are seeing both sides
“Well I love you and I’m sorry. I should have never acted like that. It was childish of me.”
You nod, just giving in
“I love you, and I forgive you.”
He smiles and you eat and he asks you where you ended up after the fight
“Paddy’s floor.”
“W H A T ? !”
You just giggle at the shocked look
“They all offered but… I was fine. I didn’t wanna impede.”
He just clicks his tongue and feels even more remorseful
After breakfast though, the two of you end up on the couch, finishing up the movie you guys were watching last night
You drape your legs over his and he holds your hand and you lay your head over his shoulder and you’re both cute
And Tom loves you and he feels like an absolute asshole for what he did to you
But you get it and you feel bad too
So you guys just cuddle
And kiss each other
And love on each other
And its then that you tell him you extended the trip
And he’s super excited because he wants to show you around
And that night, the BOTH of you help his dad grill and you guys eat on the patio

So yall Remember that Dinner party prompt I had? Well here is part 2
((I also have an AO3 account now just in case anyone wants to read it there!))
It was Saturday and Rhys was panicking. He had no idea why he thought that he would be able to pull this off. When Rhys told Yvette about the dinner party she had given him a bunch of recipes that were “sure to impress” as she put it. He had assured her he could handle i himself but problem was, it was apparently very hard to mess up a recipe. Who knew?
The doorbell rang and Rhys froze in fear. What the heck? No one was supposed to be here for at least another three hours! Rhys ran to the door and looked through the peephole. “Oh thank god.” He muttered as he opened the door to reveal Zer0.
“You look very stressed.” Zer0 commented as they walked inside the apartment carrying a bag filled with bottles of wine that Rhys had asked them to buy.
“Thanks.” Rhys grabbed the bottles from them and placed it on the table.
“How is your cooking going?” Zer0 questioned as they followed him into the kitchen. Long story short, it was a war zone. “. . . Not well I assume.”
“This is a nightmare! Why did I think that a dinner party would be a good idea anyway!?” Zer0 raised a finger to speak. “Don’t you dare say I told you so.” Zer0 immediately dropped the finger. Instead, they walked over to the counter and looked at the recipes.
“Were you planning on / making all of these dishes?”
“Yeah.”
“Rhys. . .” [ಠ_ಠ]
“Ugh I know! I’m an overachiever and I’m bad at it.” Rhys looked at Zer0 with a pouty face. “Help? Please?”
Zer0 shook their head, essentially their version of rolling their eyes. They look over the recipies again. They were definitely a bit complicated. Zer0 wasn’t much of a cook but they were still significantly better than Rhys. Still, these were a bit challenging even for them. Charred skag with sweet potatoes and oranges? Roasted pumpkin, Marjoram and Blue Cheese Frittata? What even was a Marjoram? Zer0 turned towards Rhys again looking just as confused as he was. [¯\_(ツ)_/¯]
“Zer0!!!”
“”Here’s a suggestion. / Have you tried calling Yvette? / She’ll probably help.”
Rhys shook his head. “Absolutely not! I have to at least be able to prove that I can do something by myself. Now help me cut these sweet potatoes.”
Zer0 wondered if Rhys realized the irony of this situation. Probably not. “Give me a moment.” With that Zer0 disappeared into the bathroom. They brought up their Ech0 and looked through their contacts. They were sure they had her number in here somewhere- ah there it was, Yvette. They gave her a call hoping that she would pick up.
“Okay who is this and how did you get this number-” She paused. “Zer0!?”
Zer0 wondered why Yvette didn’t have their number, but then they remembered they stole it from Rhys that one time.
“Good evening Yvette.”
“Um hi? How did you even get this- you know what it doesn’t matter. Um, what do you need?”
“Sorry for the short notice. / Could you come early?”
Yvette raised her eyebrow. “Like right now? I mean I suppose I could just bring my stuff and get ready there, any particular reason though?”
“Rhys is in over / his head with cooking. He could / use some assistance.”
Yvette groaned and slapped a hand to her forehead. “I told him I could give him easier recipes if he wanted but he insisted on the harder ones. I knew I shouldn’t have listened to him but I figured it would be funny to watch him stumble over himself a bit.” She said with a laugh. “I could come over and help salvage whatever mess he has made, but what would be in it for me?” She asked.
Zer0 thought about threatening her for a moment, but according to Maya that was not how people traditionally bonded with each other. They would need to try another approach. “As compensation / for your assistance how is / A favor owed then? “
Yvette sighed. “Rhys owes me plenty of favors alread-”
“No, not from Rhys. I’ll / owe you the favor myself. “
Yvette looked surprised. “Wait seriously?”
Zer0 nodded. “Do we have a deal?”
Yvette smiled from the other line. “I’ll be there in ten. Make sure to do some damage control okay? The less ingredients Rhys wastes the better.”
Zer0 displayed [TNKS] before hanging up. They returned to the kitchen to see how Rhys was progressing only to see the kitchen filled with smoke. [!!!] They ran over to the stove and saw the culprit was a pan filled with oil burning. They quickly turned the burner off and moved the burning into the sink and turned on the cold water. It generated a lot of steam but that was much better than smoke in their opinion. Zer0 immediately turned towards Rhys who had been previously started cutting sweet potatoes but was now staring at Zer0. “Hey! That was heating!”
“It almost caught on fire.” [ಠ_ಠ]. Rhys tilted his head in confusion and Zer0 gestured to the smoke.
“Oh.” Rhys muttered dumbly. “I guess I didn’t notice.”
“How about you rest? / I can take over a bit.” Zer0 suggested, opening a few windows to let the smoke out.
Rhys frowned. “No, that wouldn’t be fair. This was my dumb idea after all.” Rhys sighed as he sat down in one of the dining rooms chairs. “Ugh this whole dinner party is going to be a disaster, I don’t know what I was thinking. I just- I just wanted everyone to like each other. I want your friends to like me, and I want my friends to like you. But how are we going to have a dinner party without dinner.”
Zer0 walked behind Rhys and wrapped their arms around his shoulder. “We still have a few hours. I think it will all work out in the end.”
“I don’t know Zer0.” Rhys sighed. “I am really in over my head this time.” As if on cue there was a knock on the door. Rhys jumped. “Who could be here so early!?”
Zer0 let go of Rhys and walked toward the door. “I will answer it.”
Opening the door revealed Yvette. She had a garment bag and a box in her hand. “Evening you two.” She greeted walking in and dropping her items onto a chair. She looked around the kitchen. “Well it’s not a complete disaster.” She sniffed the air a bit. “Rhys did you start a fire?”
“No! I almost did but I didn’t actually do it. What are you even doing here?”
Yvette rolled her eyes. “Zer0 called me. If you needed help you could have contacted me sooner. Or you know, chosen something easier?”
Rhys gave Zer0 an accusatory look. “You called Yvette?”
“You were depressing to watch.” [ :) ]
Rhys frowned at their datefriend. Yvette walked over to Rhys and urged him to stand up. “Rhys, your stressed. Why don’t you go start getting ready? Zer0 and I can take it from here.” Rhys seemed hesitant. “Go on now. I know it takes you forever to get ready. Plus it will give Zer0 and I a chance to get to know each other.” She gave them both a mischievous smile.
Rhys looked at Zer0 wearily and Zer0 was beginning to regret their decision to invite Yvette for help. They had fallen for the oldest trick in the book: Divide and Conquer. Not only to Yvette get a favor from a vault hunter out of this, but now with Rhys out of the picture she could prod Zer0 for all the questions she wanted. Rhys could always stay, but he honestly didn’t want to be here for this. Yvette walked towards the kitchen and Rhys quickly mouthed an “I’m sorry” to Zer0 before disappearing into the bathroom.
‘Traitor.’ Zer0 thought to themself as they followed Yvette into the kitchen.
“Alright Zer0 start off but cutting these vegetables for me.” Yvette stated handing a bunch of miscellaneous produce to Zer0 before seasoning and beginning prep for the meat based dishes. The two worked in relative silence for about 15 minutes, the only sound being the occasional orders Yvette gave.
Yvette put one of the casseroles Rhys was adamant about including in the oven. “So you and Rhys huh? Gotta say that’s not a combination I saw coming.” Zer0 remained silent. “What cat got your tongue?”
Zer0 tilted their head. “Unlikely. We do / not own a cat or any / animal right now.”
Yvette raised an eyebrow. “That is actually-”
“An expression. I / know. I was attempting a joke.” “Oh.” Yvette muttered.
Another wave of silence. This was awkward.
“You know I’m not going to grill you or anything if that’s what you are worried about.”
Zer0 stayed quiet for a moment. “You aren’t?” They asked, breaking haiku
“Nope. You are going to get enough of that from Sasha and Fiona trust me. Plus, I don’t want to make you repeat any questions.” Yvette said with a grin.
“Oh.” Zer0 sighed.
“I just-” Yvette paused for a moment walking to a cutting board and cutting up some spring onions. “I trust Rhys to make his own decisions, I do. He wouldn’t be dating you if he didn’t trust you. I think that’s what we are mostly worried about. You have this reputation as this cutthroat killer who will do anything to complete a mission. And I mean, Rhys is this big time CEO now. For all we know you could be getting closer to him just to. . .well. . . . “ She trailed off.
Zer0 knew what she was getting at and they didn’t like the insinuation. “I care about Rhys. / I wouldn’t-”
“But that’s the thing.” Yvette interrupted. “We don’t know that for sure because we don’t know you. You could sit here all day and tell me that you would never hurt Rhys because you love him or whatever but for all I know you could be a liar. I want to trust in Rhys, that he wouldn’t date anyone who had any intentions of hurting him but. . .” She paused her cutting for a moment. “Look Rhys doesn’t have a great track record when it comes to trust. He’s put full trust in me, Fiona, Sasha and Vaughn. With all the things we’ve been through we’ve all at least thought of betraying him at one point. Hell, some of us have. Yet he still forgave us and trusts us completely. Rhys may act like a complete douchebag sometimes but at the heart of it he’s probably the best of us. If you ever did hurt him he’d probably end up forgiving you in the end. That’s just who he is. I know me of all people have no right to say this but we just want to make sure your intentions are pure.”
Zer0 had a slight idea of what she was saying. Rhys didn’t talk much about what went on during the Gortys project, he always got weirdly defensive about it. He did briefly mention the details of Yvette’s betrayal. There was a part of them that wanted to rub it in, that they would never do something like she did to Rhys. However, a greater part of them respected her for this. Zer0 had no intention of hurting Rhys or his friends, but they had to admit it took a lot of guts to question a supposed ‘cutthroat killer’ they was she was currently.
“Oh, i’m also going to say this now because I know no one else will be brave enough to do it themselves.” With that she took the knife she was holding and slammed it hard into the wooden cutting board. “I don’t care how many times Rhys is willing to forgive you, if you hurt Rhys even once, you’ll regret it. You may be some big bad assassin who could probably kill me in seconds but trust me, I have my ways Zer0. Got it?” Yep, definitely a lot of guts. Zer0 didn’t want to call it so early, but Yvette might be their favorite. “Understood.” [ :) ]
Yvette and Zer0 continued to cook together making mild chatter. Yvette told Zer0 a few embarrassing stories about Rhys that they were definitely going to memorize so they could tease him with them later.
It was getting closer to the start time, the guests would be arriving any minute. Rhys came out, fully dressed. He wore a light blue dress shirt with tiny white stars all over the front. On top of the dress shirt was a black wool vest paired with black tailored pants. “How do I look?” He asked using his, as his friends called it, ‘handsome jack tone.’
“I’m just glad you aren’t wearing a tie that goes into your pants.” Yvette said, her and Zer0 sharing a laugh.
Rhys huffed. “Oh ha ha very funny.”
“You look amazing.” [ :) ] Zer0 complimented, causing Rhys face to heat up a bit.
“Alright I’m going to leave you two love birds to change.” She grabbed the garment bag and the box she had previously placed on the table and disappeared into the bathroom.
Rhys raised an eyebrow at Zer0. “Um, aren’t you going to get dressed?”
[ ? ] “I am dressed.”
“Oh. So you are wearing your normal suit.”
“Is there a problem?”
“No I mean it’s just it’s a semi formal party I just thought you were going to. . . be semi formal.” [ಠ_ಠ] “Don’t make that face! I know you don’t like wearing other clothes and it’s hard to find clothes in your size. I just. . . “ Rhys paused. “Hang on.” He ran into his bedroom and came back in 30 seconds flat. He pulled out a clip on bowtie that matched his under shirt. “Here put this on!”
“I refuse.” [ >:( ]
“Zer0 you have to be somewhat formal!”
“No.”
“Please? For me?” Rhys brought out his secret weapon: the puppy eyes.
[ . . . ] They snatched the bowtie from Rhys hands and clipped it to the front of their suit. They were clearly unhappy with it, but Rhys seemed ecstatic. “Look at us, one of those cheesy couples who match our clothes with each other. Maybe we can buy matching sweaters” Rhys snorted.
“I will take it off.” [>:(]
“I’m joking!” He yelled in protest. Just then, the door knocked. Rhys instantly looked tense again.
Zer0 sighed and tapped him on the shoulder. “It will be fine no need to / worry. We’ll do great.”
Rhys nodded. “Yeah you’re right. And also uh, thanks for indulging me. I know this is stupid and I blow things out of proportion sometimes but I really appreciate this.” With that he gave Zer0 a quick kiss to the front of their helmet before going to the door to open it.
Zer0 rubbed the front of their mask, briefly displaying a [<3] making sure it disappeared as Rhys opened the door. ((END OF PART 2 that took forever.  Who’s the first guest? Or second, since i suppose Yvette is the first.  The next installment should hopefully be the last part!  I may work on other prompts before I finish this one because I have a lot now!  Until next time! ))
