Four of Swords

The Four of Swords, from late May 2020. One of my favorite song cycles is Die Schöne Müllerin (The Lovely Milleress) by Schubert, in which a young man pines after a woman without telling her, instead telling his feelings to nature, in particular the babbling brook. The closest he gets to confessing is when he buys her a green ribbon, knowing that green is her favorite color. When she understandably falls for someone else, he becomes overwhelmed by emotions and drowns himself in the brook.

The entire song cycle is sung from his perspective except for the very last song, illustrated here, which is sung from the brook's perspective: a lullaby. The last song is tender and caressing, enveloping the listener in love and peace. As stressed as I was while creating this, the deepest peace I could think of was this song, and no real examples of relaxation or rest from my own life. Thankfully that has changed, but I still like this image for this card.

In conjunction with World Bipolar Day today, it is a commendable effort by Tengku Puteri Raja Tengku Puteri Iman Afzan Al-Sultan Abdullah, who recently founded the @greenribbongroup.my that aims to raise the awareness of mental health issues while creating viable solutions through advocacy, fundraising and collaboration. I do believe that the more we learn and talk about mental health, it will allow us to provide helpful support to those affected be it individually, within their families or communities. Mental health issues could arise due to the misalignment of our body, mind and soul. Being in the wellness and mindfulness space, I believe that meditation helps tremendously with mental health issues by guiding one to re-align with their True Self. As I always shared with my students, the biggest roadblock to one’s self-realization arise from ignorance of our true nature and polarization of mind. The aim of meditation is not to push aside stress or block out negative thinking, but rather to be mindful of those thoughts and feelings, while understanding that you don’t have to act upon them. This could be as simple as closing your eyes and taking deep breaths. Just as with incorporating proper diet and exercise, it takes consistent practice to feel the results from meditation. I like how within the central friend group of Stranger Things you have people whose “how we became best friends” stories range from “I was alone on the first day of kindergarten and so was he so I asked him to be friends and he said yes” and “she asked me for advice about boy problems and we went shopping” through to “the juvenile demon dog I was raising in a terrarium broke out and ate my cat and he was the only person I could find who wouldn’t need extensive briefing to be able to help me.”

I can’t remember if I’ve said this before but I think that if you make a Batman 1920s AU then you have to take into account that Bertie Wooster often spent time living in New York and Gotham City is just New York Noir and Bruce Wayne would probably cultivate the acquaintance of Bertie Wooster because Bertie is exactly the sort of person Bruce wants people to think he is, so it’s both birds of a feather camouflage and because he wants to observe Bertie for behavioural ideas.

Bertie, ray of sunshine that he is, thinks Bruce is jolly good fun and really quite barmy, but he already has a friend called Barmy and he can’t manage two Barmies so he affectionately dubs him Batty.

Consequently Bruce exists in a state of nagging uncertainty as to whether Bertie is the golden-hearted silly ass he so transparently appears to be, or is in fact one of his villains, knowing who he is and taunting him.

I really like how Meilin in Turning Red realises she has a crush on a boy called Devon, or rather develops a crush on him, through the medium of drawing pictures of him. It's such a good reflection of how much a crush at that age is almost entirely the product of the crusher's imagination and a way of practising feelings that will fully develop later on.

4. i had wanted izombie to end with season 4 because i wasn’t enjoying early season 4, but i am glad now that we’re getting to see the show off properly. also, of course, fucking shameless, as ever.
