the more i watch Green/Parsons, the more i think they're genuinely contemporary dancers - like that's where they feel most themselves, expressively. it's true they're trying to recapture the magic of their 2021-22 Martha Graham/Twyla Tharp moment, but the reason they did this style last season and they're doing something similar this season is because this is what they like, who they are

they can do other styles for the RD and do them well, but unlike a lot of ice dance teams who may take dance classes to help their skating and wouldn't otherwise do it, these two feel really invested in this specific style of movement. like these 3 contemporary FDs have varying degrees of success, but they all feel organic to them in a way that Rhapsody in Blue and the other FDs from their WISA years didn't

they're somehow emotional while being cool (as opposed to warm or hot) in all these FDs, and there's a vocabulary of shapes and a way of relating to each other that feels familiar from off ice modern dance

the original - 2021-22 - the way this was so fresh then but also holds up - emotional and expressive. they won 4CC and nearly made the Olympic team

2023-24 US Nats - still think after the first 3rd of the program this has too many Charlie-isms in the arm flinging. they don't need that - Michael has the ability to express beautifully with his arms and hands without it. but maybe it was partly to make up for needing to build with more power in the 2nd half - they were injury plagued and maybe couldn't build in the way they otherwise would have

NHK last weekend - the opening Spiegel im Spiegel section is gorgeous. though Dance Me to the End of Love is a beautiful song, that section doesn't feel cohesive or carry energy all the way through. but i'm curious to see how this evolves by Nationals

I’ve been rewatching a bunch of ice dance from the Grand Prix so far and it’s just even more ridiculous in theory that the usfsa would rather continue pushing solely chock/bates when they by far have the strongest lineup of young ice dancers.

Madness.
