I just got home from the best camp out!
I summited Wheeler Peak, which was 13,064 ft. tall! It was the hardest and longest hike I’ve done alone. I would not have made it without the encouragement of strangers.
The hike was incredibly challenging, but I’m really happy with the shot I got of the peak during golden hour. (The flat part that the light touches is the summit 😯).
I walked through a grove of Bristlecone Pine trees—they are the oldest living things in the world. The oldest living one in this grove was 3,200 years old.
I got within 15 feet of a herd of deer, include some young ones! They were super cute. I also saw a bunch of turkeys.
It was so cold out that I had to get in my tent early. As a result, I read a lot of my book at got 10 hours of sleep both nights.

Great Basin National Park, Nevada
I headed out on a short backpacking trip. The route followed old mining road and passed through the ruins of a briefly thriving community. From there, I stopped by the lake, climbed to the top of the nearby peak, then dropped to a second lake for the night.

Speleothems in Lehman Cave
This photo shows many varieties of stalactites (hanging down from the ceiling), stalagmites (pointing up from the floor), columns (connecting floor to ceiling), and a great deal of flowstone (polished limestone formed from calcite deposited by flowing water). These are all varieties of speleothems (which means cave formations). Speleothems grow slowly over long times, and continue to grow as long as flowing or dripping water is present.

Sunset Highway (Great Basin National Park) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: At a roadside pullout just off Nevada Hwy 50 with a view looking to the southwest and the mountains in Great Basin National Park. This was one of several images I captured using the LCD screen on my Nikon SLR camera to line up the center stripe and road with the more distant ridges and peaks. It was as I began working on the image in post production that I then decided to once again try out the sky replacement setting in Photoshop with this image. The sunset and colors with the clouds seemed appropriate for this national park setting. So the skies are part of the Adobe stock images in Photoshop but all else is captured with my Nikon D850 SLR camera. I later worked with control points in DxO PhotoLab 5 and then made some adjustments to bring out the contrast, saturation and brightness I wanted for the final image.

Pole Canyon Great Basin National Park
Hiking the Pole Canyon Loop showcases part of what makes Great Basin so beautiful. You experience the Piñon-Juniper Life Zone with glimpses of Wheeler Peak and the valley floor below.
Great Basin National Park allows you to explore many different life zones because its range in elevation is so great. Hiking the Pole Canyon Loop is a great way to explore the mid-range life zone at Great Basin. This 6.5-mile loop takes hikers through meadows and aspen and pine forests. This is the Piñon-Juniper Life Zone, which typically thrives at 7,000 to 8,000 feet in elevation. Here there…
