FredFilms Postcards Series 4.6

It’s almost impossible to sum up the 60+ years of Horace Silver’s professional life as a pianist, band leader and composer in a blog post. Suffice it to say that he walked the line of being a sophisticated, acclaimed musician, while at the same time releasing a whole bunch of accessible and popular records, primarily on the BlueNote record label.

(For you yacht rockers, you should compare Steely Dan’s “Rikki Don’t Lose That Number” from 1974 with Horace’s 1964 classic “Song for My Father.”)

“Great Artist” indeed!

PS: And let’s not forget the ‘great artist’ who shot this photography (and another in our series), Blue Note Records co-founder and photographer, Francis Wolff.

i vote that next year instead of reading Dracula we do a Jeeves & Wooster Book Club. those two never got the rabid tumblr shipping fandom they deserved (disqualified for the sheer technicality of being published a century too soon). we must correct this injustice

#jeeves and wooster #i want to watch tumblr go rabid i want to watch ao3 overflow with jeeves/wooster fanfiction #yes obviously the fandom EXISTS but it's a cozy little neighborhood #a handful of talented artists and writers doing their best to keep their charming little village going #but i'm tired of cozy i want this fandom TRENDING #I WANT TO SEE THIS ON MY DASHBOARD PEOPLE #i swear to you if they made a shiny new tv series tumblr would absolutely obsess over these characters. good omens levels of obsession #it's just such a great dynamic! the good-natured overly-trusting bumbling idiot in constant need of rescuing!#the stoic all-knowing genius who quietly masterminds mayhem in order to protect this one moron he's devoted himself to for some reason #jeeves as a morosexual is just such a beautiful interpretation of the original text #wooster as a happy-go-lucky himbo who stumbles his way into a relationship with a protective caring and supremely competent mastermind #the angst and social complexities of a same-sex cross-class relationship in turn-of-the century london!#oh AND half the stories are about jeeves helping wooster get out of engagements/desperately avoid marriage #two men who live together constantly scheming to maintain their bachelorhood. this is quite literally the main plot point #the gay subtext is there! the gay subtext is there and very ripe for picking!!!#this thing is LOCKED AND LOADED we can pounce literally any time

FredFilms loves Carla Bley!

FredFilms Postcard Series 4.5

Over the course of my life, I’ve learned from all kinds of artists. Animators and illustrators, sure. But also writers (natch!), engineers (they’re artists too) and, most of all, musicians.

Composers Carla Bley and Michael Mantler were my first creative bosses. First, when they had the audacity –and necessity!– to start their own record labels and distribution non-profit when no other place would give them a break. They hired me as a flunky, but boy did I get a lot from that gig. Where else would a young man meet Phillip Glass or Jimmy Garrison and learn about the breadth of artist produced music of the era? I was in heaven. And then, when 20 years into her composing career, Carla decided to take a big band out on tour, I was the sound guy and assistant road manager. As I’ve said before, a great chance to meet a bunch of misfit geniuses.

Carla (”jazz composer and provocateur”) passed away at 87 while this postcard was already in production. I was so honored to learn from her.

I’m starting to like making these even if they take time and require me to draw difficult things (it’s good practice! ��)
