Egyptian Revival
Yesterday's post was about the full opening of Tutankhamun's tomb, but there have been several times when Egypt has had a strong influence in fashion and art, and here I selected a few things from the 1910s and 1920s that are Egyptian revival, and of course let me know which ones are your favourites of you can add some when reblogging this post.
Here we go.
The beginning of the century marked the birth of modern dance, so we see that part of the Orientalism trend had a deep Egyptian influence from Les Ballets Russes to the Denishawn school: strong lines, profile poses, spectacular costumes, all taken from the art and sculpture of the ancient Egypt.
Here a little video of the Denishawn dancers along Ted Shawn (not the dance of the picture above), with no music because this is FROM 1913:
youtube
Also, this influence is clearly seen in the art deco masterpiece that is the dance scene from Metropolis (1927):
youtube
Denishawn students (Lillian Powell, Charlotte Brendel, Grace McCrea, Irene Pryor, Claire Niles) in an Egyptian dance created as part of a vaudeville act by Ted Shawn (not related to the Denishawn Egyptian Ballet), Hixon-Connelly, 1918, The New York City Public Library.
Vaslav Nijinsky and Serafima Astafieva in "Cleopatre", probably by Ernst Sandau, 1912, National Portrait Gallery, London.
Desiree Lubovska as Cleopatra, ca. 1915.
Ida Rubinstein with costume designed by Erté, 1920s.
Dancers from the Folies Bergère with costumes designed by Erté, Paris, 1924.
Dance of the Priest of Ra, from Dances of the Ages, Denishawn dancers, 1913.
Dance Scene, from Metropolis, Fritz Lang, 1927.
Fashion and accessories were deeply inspired by Egypt in the 1920s, thanks to the simple shapes of the garments, the use of striking accessories and jewelry, and the use of embellishments and embroidery to elevate the simple dresses: from appliqués to bead embroidery, to burnt velvet and translucent layers. And of course, let's not forget the use of colour that gives the feel of ancient Egyptian art: gold, sand, teal, royal blue, and burnt orange.
Orange burnout velvet dress, 1920s, available in Antique Graces.
Egyptian revival brooch, Max Neiger, 1920s, sold at auction.
Egyptian revival silk dress with appliqués, 1920s, Stephens College Costume Museum.
"Cleopatre" grande robe du soir by Jean Patou, Les Modes, september 1921 (click that link! You can read the whole magazine!).
Evening dress, Thurn, 1923-26, Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Pair of leather gloves with silk embroidery, ca. 1925, LACMA.
Beaded Egyptian revival dress, 1920s.
Egyptian revival silver gild and enamel charms necklace, 1920s, on sale on etsy.
Of course, let's not forget the graphic arts. illustration was a key for advertising and communication when colour photos were not available. Here a small selection of my favourites:
"Cleopatra", J.C. Leyendecker, for the cover of the Evening Standard, August 1923.
Ad for Egyptian Deities cigarettes, 1920s-30s.
Egyptian Goddess, ca. 1929, George Barbier.
Ramses perfume ad, 1923.
Cover for Harper's Bazaar, February 1927, Erté.
Music sheet cover for the Tutankhamen Shimmy, 1923.
And finally an extra: a Tutankhamen shimmy recorded in 1926:

I used the technique of reverse appliqué and painting to visually communicate my narrative.
During the lesson on reverse appliqué, unfortunately I wasn't in. However, I was able to catch up with the teacher and she was able to debrief me on what to do, from there, I was able to grasp the concept and practice at home. What I did was, with the sewing machine I have at home, I sowed two fabrics together, then with a pair of scissors, I cut the top layer of the fabric to reveal the bottom layer of the fabric.
With the technique of reverse appliqué the bit I found challenging was cutting up the top layer in order to see the bottom layer. This is because when cutting up the top layer with a pair of scissors, if not steady and careful, you might end up cutting important pieces. So instead what I did to tackle the situation was to purchase a cutting knife. Now, I am able to cut with precision without accidentally cutting up important pieces that adds value to my narrative.
The picture I used is a picture of the escalators in Bullring shopping centre.
The architectural design of the escalators- zig-zag is what I am going to be using to visually communicate my narrative.
The motion of the escalators- up and down mimics the mindset of the two generations- young and old. The mindset of the older generation because it lacks colour,(colour meaning, it lacks contemporary innovativeness) I am going visually communicate that through the the downward motion of the escalator.
I used the colours black and white to represent the older generation. The colour black is paint and the colour white is fabric which I further developed.
The fabric has been distressed and it shows how mentally stress the older generation are. In 2015, Kanye West, as part of his season 3 collection released a "destroyed crop blouclè sweater" The word "destroyed" and the texture of the clothes is what inspired me to produce my very own distress fabric to visually communicate my narrative.
For the younger generation, I used colour to represent their mindset, and in relation with the escalator, the younger generation are represented by the upwards motion of the escalator. The colours I chose were red, yellow, green pink and blue. 3 of the colour are part of the Ghana flag, meaning the younger generation represent the country mentally more than the older generation. This is evident through the comparison between the distressed white fabric and the amalgamation of colours I used to visually communicate the younger generation and their innovativeness.
For the colours, I was inspired by the artist Milton Glaser.
REFRENCE
Glaser.M(1983) Milton Glaser graphic Design 1st edition New York Peter Mayer.
The reason why I was inspired by the front cover is because it rworks with my narrative- the colourful hair, the black silhouette and the negative space is on par with how I visually communicate my narrative.
The technique of reverse appliqué reveals the fabric underneath. I got inspiration from the kente fabric in Ghana. Kente is a cultural fabric in Ghana, it is so intricate to just Ghanaian.
In print workshop, I used disperse dye to make the colour of my fabric and with different paint brushes, I created the patterns on the fabric. I choose to the colour and the patterns because like a said it reminds me of the kente cloth in Ghana.
The cut I made on the paper to reveal the fabric underneath. The cut is a depiction of two people and they represent the 2 two generations
It shows how the older generation and younger generation are culturally identical. The thing that sets us apart is the way our mind manifests. The older generation’s mindset manifests in black and white and I have visually communicated that with black paint and white fabric. When I was manipulating the white fabric, I used a flame touch to burn holes and used mud to change the colour of the fabric. The process reminded me of how ripped jeans were made in the late 90s.

Roger Vivier Paris
Collection Printemps- Eté 2014 Spring-Summer 2014 collection
Roger Vivier, Paris 2014, 76 pages,
euro 40,00
email if you want to buy :[email protected]
For spring, creative director Bruno Frisoni set out to redefine the house of Roger Vivier by looking to the brand’s codes. He started with its signature square buckle, slicing it in half to create a new U-shape (“I’m obsessed with you,” he quipped.) and working it in two-tones of different metals and enamels.
Looking to today’s multitasking woman, who Frisoni described as “versatile, sporty, sexy and sensual,” he showed several different heel heights on silhouettes ranging from strappy sandals to pointy toe flats. Shoes and bags came in a range of motifs including Mediterranean pastels, graphic silver-and-white combos, a graffiti print and an abstract Klimt-inspired flower pattern that came as both appliqués and prints.

Vintage Look Ideas: A Guide to Retro-Inspired Fashion
Vintage Look Ideas: A Guide to Retro-Inspired Fashion
Vintage fashion has made a strong comeback in recent years, offering a unique blend of nostalgia and style. Retro-inspired outfits from past decades bring timeless elegance, color, and creativity into modern wardrobes. Whether you're seeking to recreate the look of the '60s or the '80s, vintage style offers endless possibilities to express your personality. In this guide, we'll explore some vintage look ideas to inspire your next fashion statement.
1. Why Choose Vintage Look Ideas?
Vintage fashion isn't just about wearing old clothes. It's about embracing the charm, craftsmanship, and originality of past eras. Vintage-inspired looks often feature high-quality fabrics, unique designs, and distinctive accessories that make you stand out. Moreover, retro fashion helps reduce the environmental impact by promoting sustainable clothing choices through thrift stores and upcycling.
Here are a few reasons why vintage style is a great choice:
Timeless Elegance: Classic styles never go out of fashion.
Sustainability: Vintage shopping promotes eco-friendly fashion choices.
Creativity: Retro fashion allows you to mix and match different eras and styles.
Unique Pieces: Vintage clothing gives you access to one-of-a-kind items that can’t be found in modern stores.
2. Popular Vintage Fashion Trends
Different decades have contributed various elements to vintage fashion. Here are some of the most iconic trends from the past:
1920s – The Roaring Twenties
The '20s are known for their glamorous and elegant styles, often seen in the flapper dresses and Art Deco-inspired accessories.
Flapper Dresses: Loose-fitting dresses with fringe or bead details.
Cloche Hats: Close-fitting hats that complement short hairstyles.
Pearl Accessories: Long strands of pearls or delicate pearl earrings.
Bobbed Hairstyles: Short, sleek haircuts that paired perfectly with the fashion of the time.
1950s – Classic Elegance
The '50s were all about sophistication and femininity, with silhouettes that emphasized the waist and full skirts.
Tea-Length Dresses: Dresses that hit mid-calf, often with a flared skirt.
Poodle Skirts: A-line skirts with playful designs or appliqué.
Cardigans and Sweaters: Soft, knitted tops worn over dresses or paired with skirts.
Red Lips: Bold lipstick was a signature feature of '50s beauty.
1960s – Mod and Youthful Fashion
The '60s introduced the mod look, which was all about bold, geometric patterns and daring styles.
Shift Dresses: Simple dresses with straight lines that skim the body.
Mini Skirts: The shorter, the better, for a youthful and energetic look.
Go-Go Boots: White or colorful knee-high boots with chunky heels.
Bold Prints: Geometric patterns, polka dots, and psychedelic prints were all the rage.
1970s – Bohemian and Funky
The '70s embraced a mix of bohemian chic, disco glam, and bold colors.
Bell-Bottoms: Flared pants that widen from the knee down.
Maxi Dresses: Long, flowing dresses perfect for the free-spirited look.
Tie-Dye: Vibrant, colorful patterns that bring an earthy, hippie vibe.
Platform Shoes: High-heeled shoes with a chunky sole.
1980s – Bold and Bright
The '80s were all about excess, with oversized silhouettes and bright colors.
Power Suits: Sharp suits with broad shoulders for a confident, bold look.
Neon Colors: Bright pink, green, and yellow made a statement in the '80s.
Leg Warmers: Worn over leggings or tights for a fun, casual look.
Graphic Tees: T-shirts featuring bold slogans or logo designs.
3. How to Incorporate Vintage Look Ideas into Your Wardrobe
If you're new to vintage fashion or just want to refresh your look with retro-inspired pieces, it's easier than you think to incorporate vintage items into your modern wardrobe. Here are some tips on how to pull off vintage looks without overdoing it:
Start with Accessories
One of the easiest ways to incorporate vintage looks into your everyday style is through accessories. Here are some ideas:
Vintage Scarves: A silk scarf tied around your neck or wrist adds an instant retro touch.
Hats: Whether it's a wide-brimmed sun hat or a cloche, hats can transform any outfit.
Vintage Jewelry: Look for bold statement pieces like chunky bracelets or pearl earrings.
Belts: A waist-cinching belt can give a modern outfit a vintage flair.
Mix Modern with Vintage
You don’t have to wear a full vintage outfit. Mixing vintage and contemporary pieces creates a balanced, fashionable look.
Pair a vintage blouse with skinny jeans or a modern skirt.
Wear a vintage jacket over a casual, plain dress.
Style an old-fashioned skirt with a trendy t-shirt or tank top.
Focus on Color and Patterns
One of the most iconic features of vintage fashion is the use of bold colors and prints. Incorporating these into your outfits will help evoke a retro look.
Polka Dots: This timeless print can add a fun, playful touch to any outfit.
Florals: From '70s maxi dresses to '50s tea-length dresses, floral prints are a vintage staple.
Stripes: Bold stripes were a major pattern in the '60s and '70s.
Tartan: Plaid patterns were popular in the '90s and continue to be a vintage-inspired trend.
4. Where to Find Vintage Clothing and Accessories
Shopping for vintage items has become easier thanks to online stores, thrift shops, and vintage boutiques. Here are some places to explore:
Thrift Stores: Local thrift stores often carry a wide range of vintage clothes at affordable prices.
Vintage Boutiques: These stores specialize in curated collections from specific decades.
Online Marketplaces: Websites like Etsy, eBay, and Depop are great for finding vintage clothing.
Flea Markets: Local flea markets are treasure troves for retro-inspired fashion finds.
5. Final Thoughts: Embrace the Vintage Look
Vintage fashion isn’t just a trend; it's a celebration of the past, offering timeless styles that continue to inspire modern designers. Whether you're drawn to the elegance of the '50s or the rebellious spirit of the '70s, vintage look ideas offer a fantastic way to express your individuality. By mixing vintage and contemporary pieces, you can easily incorporate retro-inspired fashion into your wardrobe.
Explore thrift stores, boutiques, or online marketplaces to discover unique pieces that tell a story, and have fun experimenting with vintage styles. Vintage fashion is not just about dressing up—it's about embracing a rich history of design and creativity.
Start today and bring retro-inspired outfits into your daily routine. Embrace vintage look ideas and make them your own!

Up-shirt
Old t-shirts, button-downs, tank tops, something else? If they're no longer usable as clothing, they can be used for something else.
Stain covers:
You could try to cover the stain up creatively so you can still wear it, either by using fabric paint, markers, embroidery, patches, appliqué, tie-dye, or you could even try bleach art.
Repurposing:
You could make some t-shirt yarn, cut the shirt into pieces for a quilt, or use them for pillow or slip covers.
Wall art:
If it's a graphic shirt and you want to keep the image, cut it out so you can frame it and hang it up as an image. If it's a patterned shirt, you could cut pieces out to use as backgrounds for photographs. If it's a keepsake item but you can't keep it, you could cut a piece out and frame that as the wall art.

As winter approaches, the quest for cozy and stylish clothing becomes a priority. Hoodies, once relegated to casual wear, have evolved into versatile pieces that combine comfort with chic aesthetics. In this article, we will explore how to incorporate hoodies into your winter wardrobe to stay warm and fashionable. We will delve into various styles, materials, and ways to accessorize hoodies to create a variety of stylish winter looks.
The Evolution of the Hoodie: From Streetwear to High Fashion
The hoodie has come a long way from its origins as a practical garment designed to keep athletes warm. Initially popularized by sportswear brands in the 1930s, the hoodie became a symbol of rebellion and streetwear in the latter half of the 20th century. Today, high fashion designers have embraced the hoodie, transforming it into a staple piece for stylish winter outfits. Luxury brands have elevated the hoodie with premium materials, intricate designs, and tailored fits, making it a versatile addition to any wardrobe.
Choosing the Right Material for Winter Hoodies
When selecting a hoodie for winter, the material is crucial for ensuring warmth and comfort. Here are some popular options:
Fleece: Fleece hoodies are incredibly warm and soft, making them ideal for chilly days. The material is lightweight yet insulating, providing excellent comfort without adding bulk.
Wool: Wool hoodies offer natural insulation and are perfect for those who prefer a more sophisticated look. They can be dressed up or down, depending on the occasion.
Cashmere: For a touch of luxury, cashmere hoodies are unparalleled. They are soft, warm, and have a refined appearance that makes them suitable for both casual and formal settings.
Cotton-blend: Cotton-blend hoodies are versatile and can be layered easily. They provide moderate warmth and are perfect for milder winter days or as a base layer under a heavier coat.
Classic Hoodie Styles for a Timeless Look
Classic hoodie styles are versatile and can be incorporated into various outfits. Here are some timeless options:
Pullover Hoodies: Simple and easy to wear, pullover hoodies are a staple in any wardrobe. They are available in a variety of colors and patterns, making it easy to find one that suits your style.
Zip-up Hoodies: Zip-up hoodies offer more flexibility in terms of layering and adjusting to temperature changes. They can be worn open or closed, depending on the look you want to achieve.
Oversized Hoodies: For a relaxed and cozy vibe, oversized hoodies are perfect. They can be paired with leggings or skinny jeans for a balanced silhouette.
Statement Hoodies: Bold Designs and Unique Features
For those who like to make a statement with their clothing, there are plenty of hoodies that feature bold designs and unique elements. Some trends to consider include:
Graphic Prints: Hoodies with eye-catching graphics or logos can add a fun and trendy element to your winter wardrobe.
Embroidery and Appliqué: Detailed embroidery and appliqué designs can elevate a simple hoodie into a fashionable piece.
Mixed Materials: Hoodies that combine different materials, such as leather accents or metallic fabrics, offer a unique and stylish look.
Layering Hoodies for Maximum Warmth and Style
Layering is key to staying warm in winter, and hoodies are perfect for creating layered outfits. Here are some ideas:
Under a Coat: A hoodie layered under a coat provides an extra layer of warmth. Opt for a wool or cashmere hoodie under a tailored coat for a polished look.
Over a Turtleneck: Wearing a turtleneck under a hoodie adds an extra layer of insulation and creates a chic, layered effect.
With a Vest: Pairing a hoodie with a puffer vest is a great way to stay warm without feeling too bulky.
Accessorizing Your Hoodie for a Chic Winter Look
Accessories can transform a simple hoodie into a stylish ensemble. Consider these options:
Scarves: A chunky knit scarf adds both warmth and style. Choose a color that complements your hoodie for a coordinated look.
Beanies and Hats: A beanie or a stylish hat can enhance your winter outfit while keeping you warm.
Statement Jewelry: Bold necklaces or earrings can add a touch of glamour to a casual hoodie.
Hoodies for Different Occasions: Casual to Formal
Hoodies are incredibly versatile and can be styled for various occasions:
Casual Outings: For a laid-back look, pair your hoodie with jeans and sneakers. Add a beanie and a crossbody bag for a touch of style.
Work from Home: Stay comfortable and presentable by pairing a hoodie with tailored sweatpants or leggings. Add some minimal jewelry for a polished appearance.
Evening Out: Dress up a hoodie by pairing it with a skirt and ankle boots. Choose a hoodie with unique details, such as embroidery or metallic accents, to elevate the look.
Color Trends for Winter Hoodies
Color plays a significant role in fashion, and winter hoodies are no exception. Here are some color trends to consider:
Neutrals: Neutral colors like black, gray, and beige are timeless and versatile. They can be easily mixed and matched with other pieces in your wardrobe.
Jewel Tones: Rich jewel tones such as emerald green, sapphire blue, and deep burgundy are perfect for adding a pop of color to your winter outfits.
Pastels: Soft pastel shades like blush pink, lavender, and mint green can create a fresh and modern look, even in winter.
Sustainable and Ethical Hoodies: Fashion with a Conscience
As consumers become more aware of the environmental impact of fashion, sustainable and ethical clothing options are gaining popularity. Look for hoodies made from organic cotton, recycled materials, or produced by brands that prioritize fair labor practices. Not only will you stay warm and stylish, but you’ll also contribute to a more sustainable fashion industry.
Caring for Your Winter Hoodies: Tips for Longevity
Proper care is essential for maintaining the quality and longevity of your hoodies. Here are some tips:
Read the Care Label: Always follow the care instructions provided by the manufacturer to avoid damaging the fabric.
Wash with Care: Use a gentle cycle and cold water to wash your hoodies. Avoid using harsh detergents or bleach.
Air Dry: To prevent shrinking or misshaping, air dry your hoodies instead of using a dryer. Lay them flat on a clean towel or drying rack.
Conclusion: Embrace the Hoodie Trend This Winter
Hoodies are no longer just for lazy days at home. With the right styling and accessories, they can become a central piece of your winter wardrobe, offering both warmth and chic appeal. Whether you prefer classic designs, bold statements, or sustainable options, there is a hoodie out there to suit every taste and occasion. Embrace the hoodie trend this winter and discover how versatile and stylish this humble garment can be.
