List of my all time favorite wild edibles:
Wood sorrel-- This stuff is la crème de la crème. It tastes like green apple and you can just munch on the whole plant as a snack (but don't eat too much bc it can make ur stomach hurt if u eat a ton)
Purslane-- This plant is very literally everywhere, as in growing out of sidewalk cracks, and has a great taste- like mild lemon. It is also really good for you and has a crunchy texture that I super love. Its pretty easy to identify, but you've got the wrong plant if its sap is milky white.
Acorns-- You've absolutely got to leach out the tannins in these, but once you have you can make pretty much anything. I would recommend acorn flour, but if you are adventurous you could make acorn jelly!
Ground Ivy-- This plant has a strong and pleasant taste, and is really good made into a tea. I wouldn't necessarily recommend it for a snack, but if that's what you like I wont stop you!
Cattail-- Obviously I cant make a list of my favorite wild edibles without including the one and only cattail. All of it is edible (though I wouldn't eat the forbidden hotdog--it's forbidden for a reason) and my favorite way to eat it is to take the immature flower head, which is the forbidden hotdog before it becomes brown, and roast it over a fire. It tastes a bit like corn.
River Grape-- This mostly applies to all species of wild grape, but River Grape is the kind growing in my area. The berries are a bit tart to eat a ton, but you could probably make a mean pastry with them. But the real gold lies in the leaves, which can be crisped like kale chips or turned into fabulous stuffed grape leaves. Sometimes I just eat them straight off the vine. They are just slightly tart.
Wintergreen-- It is always a treat when I find wintergreen growing on the forest floor, especially if its the time of year that it fruits. The taste is strong, like wintergreen gum, and the berries taste the same but milder.
Autumn Olive-- This plant is invasive in my area, so I don't have to feel bad about devastating the bush whenever I find one. The berries are sour, but in a good way, and sometimes they can be just a bit astringent but it depends on the bush. They don't taste at all like olives so I really don't know where they got the name but if you run into this plant you absolutely cannot pass up the opportunity to try it.
And those are my favorites, folks! As always remember to be 100% sure when you identify a plant, and don't harvest from places that might be polluted by pesticides or or other pollutants.

East Coast Love Poems
was just named runner-up for Tusculum Review's annual chapbook contest, picked by Justin Phillip Reed. This dude won the 2018 NBA of poetry... and said my shit "so strange and so trippy, balloon-full of an intimate diction" / "a conversation that's delicious to listen to" / "a particle party of my favorite sounds." Therefore I am now a cloud, and pray that the lord sends his toughest Ls right now, so I may eat them like grapes in the shade
I think I've come to feel this body of work has some selfish lonely underbelly, but always masquerades as otherwise. But that's not what it was made to be, which is bridging the gap between poetry prose and musicality. And a mixtape of my upbringing where each piece vignettes love. And little loops that are shaped like nostalgia. And the softlike flows of dude who doesn't want to grow. See those negatory leanings happen more now, totally unintended and there's no natural way to stop it at the moment so I'm shipping lots of garb. Stripping logs of bark, tripping on the rings. Super unlike my hero, Sonic the Hedgehog. Or Knuckles the Echidna. Or Knxwledge who'd never drop the bag. Either of the Macs, who taught me it's fine to be bad, so long as always good. All I hold dear is old, and I have a hard time knowing what's gold and what's gum lately. That's the catch of writing for a daily, so lost in the sauce. What are words, really, in this day and age. Aren't we all just saying shit. I miss when things would stick to my brain and play before I sleep like neon angels. I've known what's missing but never want to give. I feel so much irony with this collection. I'm trying to reconcile how to talk about it, in case a day does come, because I don't like how any of it ends up
The end of Justin's note read, "The experience leaves me convinced not only of love language as more of a literal phenomenon than just a self-help phrase or meme trope, but also of the act of love as a force that transforms and expands how we can speak and, subsequently, how we can think and imagine and conspire.” What more could I want. It took me almost 27 years to earn, so Ima burn it in the brain

Adding from Life Experience and many immunologist lectures, if you have a mold allergy or sensitivity:
Do not try to cut mold away- discard and take it as a lesson learned. Compost what you can, maybe try to adjust your purchasing habits.
Mold starts to grow on even refrigerated leftovers within 24 hours. Don't risk it. Use the freezer not the fridge, give it to someone who isn't sensitive, or toss it.
Some porous fruits like strawberries and grapes are contaminated with mold on the vine before they're ever harvested. You cannot wash or cut the mold away but heat can kill it so try different cooking methods.
Orange juice starts to grow mold as soon as you crack the seal. No lie. If you get mucousy or congested after drinking OJ from a bottle, get checked for mold sensitivity.
Hard cheeses are safer, but even they start to grow mold when kept shredded in a container or the rind is removed. Use it within a couple days, if not day of, opening the rind or wrapper.
Buffets are a minefield of bad. Just don't do it.
Inspect everything before you eat it or cook with it - check expiry dates, visually look through translucent packaging before opening it, do the sniff test if it looks fine. Obviously, if it looks visibly moldy, toss it, but if it smells off in any way, toss that, too.
I can tell pretty quick when there's mold present in food - I usually describe it as either my mouth tastes like copper pennies (blood, often from my gums) or Pop Rocks (sharp stinging pain that turns into hives). I have a lot of guilt about food waste and made myself sick more than once as a kid eating food I shouldn't have for lack of options, but I've also learned the hard way, just don't risk it. A couple wasted dollars is cheaper than an ER visit or long term health issues.
If food waste gets to be an issue, adjust your meal plans to include more frozen or single portion purchases, or pick up a food vacuum sealer for less than $20 at places like Aldi's next time they have them available. Composting isn't always allowed or practical, but that's an alternative to tossing fruits and vegetables, just follow the guidelines for it.
btw… important PSA: cutting off the mold on the surface of food does nothing. you can only see the spores on the surface, but mold itself has spread and grown roots into the food. by the time you can actually *see* the spores, that piece of food is completely full of it. youre still eating mold.
many of which are poisonous and have been shown to cause cancer. youre not even supposed to sniff it, because that can get spores into your lungs. like if you look up the health and safety guidelines for mold they barely stop short of telling you to put on a hazmat suit.
like produce is okay as long as you cut around it at least an inch, but cooked foods? you gonna die. stop eating mold people

Pics:
1 & 2. Mrs. Anne Vyne Tillery Renshaw - author, poet, 2nd Vice Prez of UAPA & co-editor (with Lovecraft) of the UAPA's Credential.
3. Vyne's book is usually described as a work of general history but, nothing could be further from the truth.
It's actually a collection of her general poetry - most being no more than a page long.
Most of her poems are on Nature but, among them are interesting selections like:
A. "Night Visions" about myriad dream potions, being swept from reason & the network of fancy.
B. "Ghosts" with lights flickering out, goblin sounds & 'haunts' to keep kids in bed.
C. "Burial Of Dreams" has a dream- land, the murderous hand of time & lightning revealing the ghost of 'my' soul!!
D. "Could We But Know" of hidden treasures, mystic regions & spirit lands beyond.
E. "Heart Of Hunger" suffers from fancies of love a-thirst but, is actually a lost soul in a lonely Hell.
F. "A Void" with autumnal death, a new grave & our barren wastes.
Pics: Some dark humor to light the hard way forward - now that Prez Biden has stepped away from the Election...
Only 2 of the jokes can be considered true "cosmic horrors."
HPL: 1915 Output -
"A Mississippi Autumn", Part 2.
Text:
"... Striving soul, in... madness bound,¹ Renews the harvest of (our) annual round,
... Find(ing) in (seasons') death &... birth... Sign(s) of promise for (a) laboring earth.²
Late... summer from the eastern sky With treasures came³ (&) coldly passed us by.
... Fragrant roses &... feathered train, The... laughter of... moon struck Swain,⁴
Each... blessed boon the summer gave, That now, unburdened, seeks it's western grave.
Rose petals for a few; thorns for the rest: For some... bird song; now, (an) empty nest.
Some hail the end with welcome... relief, Some cling with tears of... grief.
Some with... glad content⁵ (ask) the season speed; And some with sorrow scan the fading weed(s).
Where late... rainbow blossoms lined the path, Behold the pallor of the aftermath:
Expiring summer, with... brilliant rays, Draws (its) last breath in (a) gorgeous blaze.⁶
How rich a shroud⁷... pensive autumn weaves, With fox grape purple (&) ... tinted leaves,
... Crimson dogwood &... sassafras, ... Gums & goldenrod... grace the mass.⁸
Chrysanthemums... crowd the open... door And see (a) season soon to be no more;
While... wild clematis,⁹ in (its) sacred state,¹⁰ ... Clasp(s) his throat; (a) rosary¹¹ of fate.
Like holy candles,¹² ... burning by, ... Towering reeds... watch the summer die,
And fragrant lavender, (an) incense rare, ... Lends its sweetness to... sighing air.
Earth gains the rest that frosty breezes bring, And stilled in slumber, waits (for) the sun of spring."¹³
Footnotes:
1. The "striving soul" is the dutiful farmer(s) who doesn't "lament... the... revolving year."
In fact, farmers depend on the changing seasons to know when to plant & when to "renew... the harvest."
"In... madness bound" is the part that I don't understand yet.
Unless one looks at the harvest as a sort of 'sacrifice' by Mother Earth & farmers are seen as 'her priests.'
2. This is another bad analogy - it's the farmers who labor to have the ground grow what they want...
Earth, without help, can make even deserts 'green.'
(See the prehistory of the Sahara...)
3. Cooler days & dryer air - away from the tropics, of course?
Definitely few hot nights...
(See #13 for the reason.)
4. Since this isn't a love poem, I'd skip the "young suitor" meaning & pick the older "country youth" - especially "a (mad) peasant."
("Moonstruck" =s "mad, loony." As in "unable to think or act normally - because of being 'affected' by the moon.")
5. Huh?!
The synonym for glad is "content, happy."
Howard used both - next to each other...
Perhaps, HPL meant "glad serenity" or "glad satisfaction"?
6. Though "blaze" usually describes a "fiercely burning fire."
It can also mean "to shine powerfully."
7. This "shroud" is actually the leafy biomass that serves as a sort of coating during the winter.
And, as a basic 'fuel' for the growth of new greenery during spring.
The ancient cycle of life...
8. This is not the biomass.
Rather, it's the main act of worship in most Christian churches.
But, this is a mass of Nature!
And different trees stand in for human worshippers...
9. Clematis is better known as the Leather flower!
It is mildly poisonous & so, deer proof.
Clematis blooms best in full sun & loamy soil.
And grows from late winter to mid fall.
10. The 'sacred state', of the clematis plant, refers to its 'spiritual' meaning.
White clematis symbolizes "purity & fresh starts."
It 'supports' the "cleverness" of artists, musicians & philosophers!!
Furthermore, clematis is the herbal 'medicine' used for joint pain, gout, headaches, syphilis, etc...
11. Sorry, not the rosary plant.
Instead, this rosary is used - by Catholics - to count prayers & to focus upon the deeper meaning of praying.
Strangely enough, rosary beads weren't mentioned in the Bible!
In fact, Jesus' followers didn't use them.
But, rosaries were used by the Greeks, Buddhists, Hindus, etc...
They aren't supposed to be used like necklaces!!
12. Holy candles symbolize prayers offered in good faith.
They show reverence to the church & the acceptance of God's will.
And, can be lit during particularly hard or trying times.
Votive candles, however, honor a Saint & so, are used to pray for the dead.
They signify that a vow has been fulfilled.
13. Seasons occur because the Earth is tilted some 23 degrees in its orbit around the sun!
This causes sunlight to fall with a different impact on different areas of our planet.
Northern Earth has the most direct light during May to July & so, it's summer then.
For Southern Earth, their summer occurs from November thru January.
There's a theory that Theia (another planet!!) crashed into Earth, creating the moon & the Earth's tilt!!
This Mars sized planet - from the Kuiper Belt (outer 'asteroids') - was mostly vaporized...
Or, was it?!
Geologists think that they've found pieces of it!
There's 2 blobs of dense material in Earth's lower mantle.
One under Africa, the other under the Pacific Ocean!!
Hmm...
Our planet keeps getting stranger.
End.

Regaining My Smile's Strength: My Experience with Steel Bite Pro
For years, the health of my teeth and gums had been a growing concern. Receding gums and a nagging sensitivity made flossing and brushing a chore, and dental visits filled me with dread. Determined to take a proactive approach and improve my oral health naturally, I decided to try Steel Bite Pro, a dental health supplement. Here's why I'm glad I did.
Natural Powerhouse for a Stronger Smile
I'm wary of harsh chemicals or artificial additives in anything I consume, especially something going in my mouth. Steel Bite Pro appealed to me because it uses a blend of powerful, all-natural ingredients specifically chosen for their benefits on teeth and gums. Barberry root, turmeric, yarrow, and grape seed extract are just a few of the key components, all with established reputations for promoting healthy gums, reducing inflammation, and fighting bad bacteria. Understanding the science behind these natural ingredients instilled confidence in Steel Bite Pro's potential to improve my oral health.
Easy to Swallow Capsules for Daily Support
Incorporating new routines into a busy life can be challenging. Thankfully, Steel Bite Pro comes in a convenient capsule form, making it simple to integrate into my daily schedule. The recommended dosage is just two capsules per day, one in the morning and one in the evening. The capsules are small and easy to swallow, ensuring consistent use, which is crucial for seeing results with any supplement.
Reduced Sensitivity and a More Comfortable Bite
One of the first changes I noticed after using Steel Bite Pro for a few weeks was a significant reduction in tooth sensitivity. Cold drinks and hot foods, which used to trigger discomfort, became less problematic. This newfound resilience allowed me to enjoy certain foods without wincing in pain. Beyond the reduced sensitivity, I also experienced a feeling of overall strength returning to my bite. Chewing no longer felt like a chore, and my teeth felt more secure and stable.
Improved Gum Health and Reduced Inflammation
Healthy gums are the foundation of a healthy smile. Since using Steel Bite Pro, my gums appear less inflamed and less prone to bleeding during brushing or flossing. While I haven't experienced any major gum problems, the overall improvement in gum health suggests that Steel Bite Pro is contributing to a healthier oral environment. Stronger, healthier gums provide a solid base for my teeth, leading to a brighter and more confident smile in the long run.
A Brighter Future for My Oral Health
Steel Bite Pro has become a valuable addition to my oral care routine. The natural ingredients, convenient format, and noticeable improvements in sensitivity, gum health, and bite strength have all contributed to a stronger and healthier mouth. If you're looking for a natural way to improve your oral health, reduce sensitivity, and support healthy gums, I highly recommend giving Steel Bite Pro a try. Remember, consulting with your dentist before starting new supplements is always a good idea, but for me, Steel Bite Pro has been a step towards a brighter and healthier smile. It's given me back the confidence to enjoy food and smile freely again.pen_sparktunesharemore_vert

20 Steps to Puppy-Proof Your Home!
Are you a victim of puppy love? You’re not alone! Puppies are adorable and bring out our playfulness. They keep us active and can grow to be loyal friends. But along with the joys of adopting a puppy comes with the inevitable wear and tear on your home, and – even more importantly – a great responsibility to keep these babies safe. Here are 20 ways to puppy-proof your home for their safety and your sanity.
Choose your veterinarian before you even bring your puppy home. Keep your regular vet and emergency vet’s contact information in an obvious place. Make sure your entire family and any pet sitters know where this list is.
Look at your house from your puppy’s perspective, literally, and figuratively. Your curious, inquisitive new friend sees things differently than you do. Get down on your hands and knees in every room to see what might attract them. Think like a puppy during this exercise!
Create a safe space for your pup. Crate training can give them a confined place to relax and retreat from overstimulation. Just like human babies, your canine baby needs to sleep!
Young puppies should be supervised when not in a crate. If you have to leave your puppy alone, make sure they have a secured space that contains appropriate toys, a little water, a comfortable area for resting, and a potty area.
Consider installing childproof locks and pet monitor cameras. Remember, your puppy is truly a baby/toddler.
Install baby gates for rooms that you just don’t want your puppy to have access to.
Keep trash secure and out of the way. The enticing smells wafting from your garbage are a puppy magnet. Your puppy could cause a disgusting mess by tearing your trash apart, and worse – they could ingest hazardous materials.
Keep them away from filled bathtubs which can be a drowning hazard until your puppy has learned to swim. Even toilets can be dangerous. Keep toilet lids down.
Hide things that you don’t want sharp puppy teeth to chew: cords, medicines, houseplants, chemicals, pest poisons, batteries, trash, detergent pods – even sugarless gum and chocolate can cause injury, illness, or death for your dog.
Here’s a partial list of the most common foods that can make dogs sick (vomiting, diarrhea, seizures) and in some cases can be fatally toxic:
Alcohol
Apricots, Balsam pears and Japanese plums
Avocados
Bacon
Chocolate
Coffee and tea
Cooked bones
Foods high in fat, sugar, or salt
Grapes and Raisins
Human vitamin supplements containing iron
Milk and dairy
Moldy food and yeast dough
Nuts – almonds and macadamia
Onions
Raw eggs and fish
Rhubarb and spinach
Tobacco products are also toxic, including gum and nicotine patches.
Tomato and potato leaves and stems
Certain houseplants are also toxic. Here’s a partial list of common houseplants that can sicken or kill your puppy:
Azalea
Calla Lily (also Peace and Palm lilies)
Asparagus (a.k.a. Emerald Feather, Lace Fern, Sprengeri Fern, Plumosa Fern)
Elephant Ear
Aloe Vera
Ivy
Sowbread (Cyclamen)
Dieffenbachia (sometimes known as Dumb Cane)
Jade (also called Rubber Plant and Friendship Tree)
Poinsettia
Philodendron
Never allow your puppy to be outside unsupervised.
Inspect your flora and fauna and research what might be poisonous for puppies. Some common culprits include:
Aconite
Belladonna
Buttercups
Chrysanthemum
Creeping Charlie
Daffodils
Delphinium
Elderberry
Foxglove
Gardenias
Hibiscus
Hyacinth
Hydrangea
Lily of the Valley
Marigolds
Oak
Oleander
Peonies
Philodendron
Poison ivy
Poison oak
Primroses
Rhododendron/Azaleas
Rhubarb
Sago Palm
Stinging nettle
Tomato
Tulips
White clover
Wisteria
Yew
Make sure pools are fenced in. Even baby pools and uncovered jacuzzis are hazardous.
Mow and maintain your yard. Tics are more likely to live in tall grass. Remember, if maintaining your yard means using fertilizers and pesticides, this could be unhealthy – especially after a recent treatment.
Watch out for temperature extremes – cold or hot – and weather events.
Be on the lookout for animal predators.
Protecting your little canine guy or gal is paramount, but protecting your house from your puppy will create a more harmonious living environment. You don’t want to be constantly yelling at your dog – and they sure don’t want that either! Here are some ways to create a more durable home environment:
Install pet-friendly finishes and fabrics
Floors:
Ceramic or porcelain tile are scratch-resistant and nonporous (think puppy potty-training accidents), but make sure to apply a sealer twice a year to the grout – which can be more absorbent.
If you like wood, factory-finished floors weather better than true hardwood. Luxury vinyl planks are even hardier.
If you have wall-to-wall carpeting, buy some synthetic fabric rugs to use over these, at least during the potty training phase. Indoor-outdoor rugs are great because they are designed to be stain and odor proof. Low-pile wool rugs are also fairly wear-proof since they are naturally water-resistant and should be relatively easy to spot-clean.
Upholstery:
Fabric upholstery can be protected with a layer of Scotchgard, but adding a washable slipcover is your best bet. Removable cushions that can be routinely thrown in the wash are a good option, or simply drape a pet blanket over your couches and chairs.
Ultrasuede (a synthetic form of suede) is designed to be stain resistant and moderately resistant to scratch marks. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning.
Leather doesn’t tend to absorb pet smells and is easy to clean, but can scratch easily. You might want to consider a distressed leather so that the wear from puppy claws won’t be as noticeable.
Create a specific area for pet bowls. A built-in area will not only keep the room tidier, but it will prevent you from tripping over bowls and spilling food and water everywhere.
Revisit this list and re-evaluate your home periodically – even when your puppy becomes an adult dog!

Review #8: Crown Royal XO
Previously, we reviewed Crown Royal Reserve, the first of the Master range of whiskies from that archetypal Canadian whisky blender. Next up is something a little bit different in the whisky world: a whisky finished in cognac casks. It’s Crown Royal XO (the “XO” here giving no actual indication as to age). And that’s about all we know from the box and bottle; the website adds that it’s actually a blend of fifty of their finest whiskies that get finished in the casks.
In the past I’ve not been one for cask finishes, not in Canadian whisky nor in scotch. I’m curious to see how this shakes out.
Crown Royal XO Gimli Manitoba Blended Age: NAS ABV: 40%
Price paid (MLCC): $83.99 Reviewed: 2023-11-14
Colour: Dark copper.
Nose: Rich icing sugar and dark fruits, lavender. Plum, date, and fig. Nutty with baking spice. Toffee apple, a little Crown bubble gum; pear and sour grape. Overall quite gentle.
Palate: Creamy vanilla toffee, white grapes and fig; bitter oak comes suddenly. Somewhat spicy, somewhat herbal. Sour grapes. Nuttiness arises then falls back. Perhaps a little milk chocolate. Very drying.
Finish: Old, dry oak wood and spice; red apple and dried raisins. Hint of evergreen. Spice fades.
This is one where some time in the opened bottle does wonders; when I first got this, I was not all that impressed, but now… The nose is very pleasant, each component being well articulated. But the real star is the palate: the evolution in experience here is really quite intriguing. At first, the astringency just about dominates; then, as your palate acclimates to the bitterness, it grows sweeter and really unfolds.
Score: 4 out of 5 Better in Brand: Northern Harvest Rye Worse in Brand: Reserve, Fine De Luxe, Black
This is just slightly outdone by Northern Harvest Rye. As much of a sucker as I am for a whisky that takes me on a journey, where XO goes is not quite as tantalizing as the full force rye punch that Northern Harvest Rye has to offer. Nevertheless, the two are on a level with each other, and both are rather good.
Scoring Guide 1 out of 5: Terrible; no redeeming qualities, just say no. 2 out of 5: Poor; possesses qualities that detract, fodder for mixers. 3 out of 5: Mediocre; middle-of-the-road whisky, sippable but perhaps better in a cocktail. 4 out of 5: Good; a solid pour, enjoyable neat and outstanding in a cocktail. 5 out of 5: Superb; continues to surprise and delight, something to cherish.

09/13/2023 Papa
This is Papa as I remember him in the Appleby years, in his summer aspect when he wasn’t writing.
I think it was my mother who introduced him to gardening-Mama grew up in town and country, while Papa was from Westchester County NY and his mother wouldn’t have been caught dead in public without heels on.
Papa really took off with it and transformed the gardens around Appleby. The old farmhouse had a long front lawn with many trees. One truly magnificent old oak had to be cut down and Papa’s solution for the stump was a big rock garden.
In back we had the vegetable garden and many flower beds. After all, even a poor family can afford to garden if they’re smart about it, and we absolutely lived out of that garden as well as the fruit that grew about the place. There were sour, seedy wild grapes with rubbery skins that grew in the field, smelling unimaginably heady in the summer sun, woody little Bosc pears that hurt my gums to eat (I still love them best when they’re unripe and crunchy), crabapples, and that tangle of blackberries and wine berries we used in our cereal. Vanessa and I learned to love many foods because we got the chance to choose and grow them. I especially remember the year V chose Brussels sprouts and was not disappointed, they were so Mesozoic looking! While Papa was away teaching, Mama and Vanessa and I were often braiding onions and garlic or making jam or collecting things out of the garden.
To this day, one of the first things we do when I see my parents is tour the garden-theirs or mine, wherever we happen to be. We love wildflowers too. I suppose my elbowing tangle of competing native plants (Frank swears once an animal hissed at him out of the shrubbery, so he calls my garden “the wombat cave” and insists there are dangerous beasts in there) is related to our wild crafting of gardens that merged seamlessly with the woods on all hands at my parents’ house. Papa has a more orderly taste than I do, though.
He did more than garden, though.
Behind Appleby was a large field remaining from the days it was a farmhouse. We never grew a crop out there, just had the straw cut and baled each fall. It was a stubbly wasteland otherwise except for the rocky island where the grapes grew. On the other side of the field, Papa spent a great deal of each summer cutting trees down. He cut the logs into manageable chunks and loaded them onto his old wooden hand cart (he still has it, 40-odd years later) and hauled them back across the field to stack them beside the woodpile on the side of the house. In the process he became one with the wild animals. The deer brought their fawns to him and the birds never stopped their nesting on his account. He always had a story to bring back of some creature encounter.
Appleby’s wood shed was under the main house, directly beneath the kitchen. It had an ancient wooden door with a broken board which Papa left as is, because this is where Appleby’s resident semi-wild cat Sherry would enter. She had a box with a wool blanket in the wood shed where she slept during blizzards.
Papa spent the other half of his non-writing life splitting firewood from that never ending supply. He stacked the wood shed all summer until the shed was full, and then he made piles of split logs beside the wood shed.
Winter was awfully cold at Appleby! I remember a skim of ice on the surface of the toilet water, some mornings. We did have a furnace, but besides the cost of oil my parents thought it might burn the place to the ground, so as much as possible we heated the house as it was originally built to be heated, with wood.
The worst was waking up and getting out of bed. I’d lie there for awhile feeling my cold nose and getting up my courage, then slide out as quickly as possible and run to the radiator where Mama had laid out my clothes to get warm. Wool socks first! Then a fast dash down to the kitchen where my parents would already have the first fire of the day burning.
Somewhere, Vanessa has a drawing she made of Papa splitting logs. The split wood is flying up and over his head in an arching curve.

Do you know what NOT to feed your dog?
If you have a dog or were raised with dogs in the house, I'm sure you know there are things they shouldn't be eating that you enjoy on a daily basis. But, at the same time, there's probably a few you've never heard before...
Alcohol - for obvious reasons. Alcohol is a poison that stops your body from functioning properly and damages your liver. In dogs, it has the same effect, but stronger.
Raw egg, meat, and fish - this one is so overlooked! I grew up being told dogs can't get salmonella from raw eggs, which is a huge myth! Be careful with raw foods, your dog is just as capable as getting harmful bacteria from foods as you are.
Avocado - really? Yes! They have something called persin which people are usually fine eating but causes vomiting and diarrhea in dogs.
Onions and garlic - can cause anemia by killing red blood cells! Symptoms include weakness, vomiting, breathing problems
Caffeine - we've probably all heard no chocolate, but no coffee, tea, or caffinated sodas either? Why? It raises their blood pressure and can lead to cardiac arrhythmias. It also just makes them anxious, and no one wants that!
Grapes and raisins - this one I didn't know as a kid, but even small amounts can make dogs sick! Higher amounts can lead to kidney failure. The tartaric acid in grapes actually attacks the dog's kidneys! As with most toxins to dogs, a sign they've consumed grapes or raisins is vomiting.
Dairy products (milk, cheese, ice cream, etc.) - many people are lactose intolerant, but what people may not know is that all dogs are intolerant to dairy! They didn't evolve eating or drinking dairy, so it is unnatural to their systems. Dairy can cause diarrhea and even make them itchy!
Macadamia nuts - I didn't believe it at first, but multiple sources said the cause of this toxin is unknown! Nevertheless, it is toxic to dogs, so avoid them for sure! Small amounts can kill your pup!
Chocolate - although we know chocolate is a no-no because of caffeine, it also has theobromine (from cacao beans) that causes serious problems including heart problems, tremors, seizures, and even death!
Fat trimmings and bones - weather cooked or uncooked, these can lead to pancreatitis. And the old idea that you should give your dog bones is dangerous! They can choke on it, or it could splinter in their digestive system and cause internal bleeding or death! It's just not worth the risk.
Peach, plum, and persimmon pits - these pits have cyanide in them! Crazy! Make sure your dog doesn't get their paws on one of these pits!
Yeast dough - this is crazy! If your dog eats the dough before it rises, it'll rise in their stomach?! I had to confirm this one with other sources, because it sounds like the old idea that if you eat a seed it'll grow in your stomach. But bread rises from gases commonly found in the stomach, so it makes sense! The rising dough can cause a lot of discomfort and it will also produce alcohol. It's a double whammy, like chocolate.
Salt - sounds scary, but yes too much salt can kill your dog... In small doses, it'll just make them thirsty. So if you see them drinking more, you might be giving them too much salt. Of course, also look out for common symptoms like vomiting and diarrhea.
Sugar - same as salt, too much is bad. You can give your dog diabetes in severe cases! Make sure you think about what you're giving your dog and you should be alright with a little sweetness here and there.
Xylitol - I didn't even know what this was, but it's found in some candies, gum, toothpaste, and baked goods, and used as a sweetener in some foods. Xylitol can reduce blood sugar and cause liver failure. Symptoms include vomiting, lethargy, and coordination problems.
Did you know all those? Do you know any I missed?
This was my main source, but I also did general searches to back up some things I didn't know/believe. These sources included the ASPCA and VCA Animal Hospitals websites.

Can Vegans Eat Bread? The Ultimate Guide to Vegan Bread
Veganism is a lifestyle that excludes the use of animal products, such as meat, dairy, and eggs. Vegans also typically avoid animal-derived ingredients such as gelatin, beeswax, and honey. Instead, vegans focus on consuming plant-based foods like fruits, vegetables, grains, and legumes. To be considered vegan, a product must not contain any animal products or byproducts.
Vegans are often faced with the daunting task of figuring out what foods they can and can’t eat. While some foods, such as fruits and vegetables, are obviously vegan, some foods, such as bread, are not so clear-cut. So, can vegans eat bread? The answer is yes, but it’s not as simple as you might think.
Yeast is generally considered to be vegan. Yeast is a single-celled organism that does not have any animal products or byproducts in it, making it a suitable ingredient for vegan diets. Yeast is also an important source of B vitamins and minerals, which are essential for a healthy vegan diet.
There are many types of yeast available on the market that are suitable for vegan diets, including active dry yeast, rapid-rise yeast, bread machine yeast, and nutritional yeast. Active dry yeast is the most common type of yeast used in baking and is made from dried granules of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, an organism that grows naturally in grapes, apples, and other fruits. Rapid-rise yeast is a newer type of yeast that works more quickly than active dry yeast, allowing breads and other baked goods to rise faster. Bread machine yeast is specifically designed for use in bread machines, and nutritional yeast is a deactivated form of yeast that is often used as a cheese substitute in vegan cooking.
In addition to yeast, there are many other vegan substitutes that can be used in place of yeast when baking or cooking. These include ground flaxseeds, chia seeds, baking powder, baking soda, and xanthan gum. Ground flaxseeds are a great vegan substitute for eggs in baking recipes, and chia seeds can help bind ingredients together and add moisture to baked goods. Baking powder and baking soda provide leavening and help baked goods rise, and xanthan gum can be used to replace gluten, which is found in traditional wheat-based yeasts.
Wheat bread is generally vegan, as it is made from wheat flour and other vegan-friendly ingredients, such as water, yeast, and salt. Wheat bread can be a healthy choice for vegans, as it is a good source of fiber, protein, and essential vitamins and minerals. However, it’s important to read the label to make sure the bread does not contain added sugars or oils.
Gluten-free breads can be a healthier option for some people, as they are made without gluten, which can be difficult for some people to digest. Many vegans are also gluten-free diet, so it’s important to look for bread that is both vegan and gluten-free. Gluten-free vegan bread is made without the use of wheat, barley, or rye and is typically made with a gluten-free flour such as almond flour or rice flour. Gluten-free vegan bread is a great option for those who are allergic to gluten or have celiac disease.
White bread and whole wheat bread are both popular choices for vegans, but which is better for you? Whole wheat bread is generally the healthier choice, as it is made from whole grains and is higher in fiber and essential vitamins and minerals than white bread. White bread, on the other hand, is made from refined wheat flour, which has been stripped of some of its nutrients. White bread is also higher in sugar and sodium than whole wheat bread.
When it comes to choosing the best bread for weight loss, it’s important to look for bread that is made from whole grains, is low in calories, and is high in fiber. Whole grain bread is generally a healthier choice than white bread, as they are higher in fiber and essential vitamins and minerals. Whole-grain bread helps keep you feeling full for longer and can aid in weight loss. Additionally, it’s important to avoid bread that is high in calories, sugar, and sodium.
There are many different types of vegan-friendly bread that can be enjoyed by vegans. These include wholewheat and spelt bread, rye bread, pumpernickel bread, sourdough bread, and bagels. Some vegan breads may contain ingredients such as oats, nuts, seeds, and grains, which provide additional nutrition and nutrients. Additionally, some vegan-friendly breads are fortified with vitamins and minerals to provide even more nutrition. Many vegans enjoy using whole grain bread for sandwiches and toast, as it is a healthier alternative to white bread. Other vegan-friendly options include flatbreads, tortillas, focaccia, and naan. There are also a variety of vegan-friendly sweet breads such as banana bread, zucchini bread, pumpkin bread, and cinnamon raisin bread. With so many delicious vegan-friendly breads available, vegans have a wide variety of options when it comes to choosing their favorite type of bread.

How to Dental Care for Pregnant Women
Pregnant women are required to take necessary care of their teeth, preferably by a dentist. This involves taking care of the teeth, cleaning them thoroughly, and maintaining good oral health. But it also means that you need to get your period soon so that your period-fed baby doesn’t contaminate your teeth during her birth. If you’re reading this, you’re probably one of the more than 4 million American women who are pregnant or plan on getting pregnant. It can be challenging to know how to care for yourself and your baby when you’re both working and having kids at the same time. However, with these tips from our expert dental professionals, everything becomes easier! Read on to know more about what kind of dental care pregnant women should take and how to prevent disease in your child.
Dental Care for Pregnant Women
When a pregnant woman stops taking her prescribed medications, the dental health of her baby can quickly deteriorate. This is because during pregnancy, the baby’s immune system gets surrounded by thousands of bacteria. These bacteria grow in her teeth, and if they get into her system, they can cause disease. To avoid this, you should always take your medications when you’re scheduled to have your period, and you should make sure that they’re up-to-date. As a pregnant woman, you may not be able to go to the dentist because you’re just working and having your baby. However, while you’re pregnant, it’s important to get your teeth checked out. This is because teeth are one of the most important organs for your baby’s development. Your dentist should be able to tell you what stage your teeth are in, and he or she should be able to see if there are any signs of decay. In addition, your dental hygienist should be able to determine if any of your teeth have period-related bacteria, a condition known as periodontitis.
Bacterial infections of the mouth
A bacterial infection of the mouth can cause bad breath, stained teeth, and bad teeth. In some cases, this bacterial infection can also lead to periodontal disease, or tooth tissue breakdown. These conditions are incredibly uncomfortable and costly, and they’re often preventable with a simple brushing and ver-
Sleep and Healthy Diet
A healthy diet includes plenty of fruits and vegetables, beans, seeds, and whole-wheat breads. Fruits like oranges and grapefruits are high in vitamins and minerals, while other fruits like kiwis, nectarines, and grapes are packed with vitamins and antioxidants. A balanced diet should also include a healthy amount of lean protein, such as red meat, pork, or lamb, and poultry, as well as whole-wheat pasta, rice, and whole-wheat breads. Ideally, your diet should consist of a few fruits per day, along with a healthy amount of vegetables, which can be eaten on a regular basis.
Conclusion
Dental care for pregnant women can be difficult. It doesn’t matter if you’re a single parent with a young child or a working professional who needs to care for her family. All of these people should have a basic knowledge of how to care for their teeth. This is because they’re always responsible for the most important part of their health—their child’s health. If you don’t know what to do when you’re pregnant, it’s very easy to end up with an unwanted baby girl. It’s not just the baby who’s going to have a difficult time breastfeeding; the baby’s teeth too. It’s important to know what steps to take when you’re in your period and you’re already having a baby. After all, you don’t want your baby to start showing signs of gum disease or tooth loss as a result of your period.

Symptoms of mouth cancer
A lump in the neck
Loose teeth
Changes in speech
Lip swelling
Painful swallowing
Bleeding or numbness in the mouth
Red and white patches on the mouth, gums, and tongue
Unexplained weight loss
Pain in ear
Jaw swelling and pain
Trouble moving the jaw and tongue
Mouth pain that never goes away
People who have oral cancer go through a tremendously painful journey. It’s important to enable the right treatment as soon as possible. Treatment is the last possible thing, and you should try to prevent these diseases. Maintaining good oral health is all you need to prevent further oral diseases.
How to prevent oral cancer?
Maintain a good oral hygiene
Regularly brushing and flossing your teeth should be a priority. An unclean mouth is a haven for viruses and bacteria. A major factor contributing to the development of oral cancer is infection with the Human Papillomavirus (HPV). Your immune system is negatively impacted by a dirty mouth cavity, which is also harder for your body to fight off any cancers.
Avoid tobacco & betel nuts
Oral cavity cancers are five to twenty-five times more likely to develop in tobacco smokers. Chewing tobacco regularly increases the risk of oral cancer and should be discontinued immediately.
Chewing betel nuts is the main contributor to oral cavity cancer in India. Neither raw nor processed (pan masala) betel nuts should be chewed. Paan is made from betel leaves, areca nuts, and tobacco. There is evidence that it raises the risk of mouth cancer.
Eat healthy foods
Along with maintaining good oral hygiene and avoiding bad habits, you should also be careful about your food intake. You should eat a lot of beans, berries, leafy and fibrous vegetables, flax seeds, grapes, green tea, garlic, tomatoes, soy, etc. these foods are rich in antioxidant properties and have a heightened role in preventing cancer. You should also avoid fried and grilled food.
Avoid HPV infections
Sexual transmission increases the risk of mouth cancer. Human papillomavirus (HPV) transmission during oral sex or the exchange of reproductive fluids might result in the development of oral cancer. Furthermore, none of the available supplementary oral cancer screening tools and procedures can now identify early-stage HPV-positive oral and oropharyngeal malignancies.
Visit a dentist regularly
Many people think that regularly visiting a dentist is not a choice. Even many people try to manage pain and swelling with homemade solutions. Washing your mouth with salt water is okay, but that cannot be effective for serious conditions. If you are having mouth pain or any discomfort that is coming back to you, again and again, you should visit a dentist as soon as possible.
If you suspect cancer or are already diagnosed with it, you should not worry. You just need to enable the best mouth cancer treatment in Bangalore. You can connect with Dr. Athira Ramakrishnan (MBBS, MS-ENT, DNB- ENT). You will get proper guidance and recover quickly.
