I love a good dark beer, any particular favs/recs?
I SURE DO!
My go-to is Young's Double Chocolate Stout, which I'm pretty sure is blasphemous because it's an English stout and my family is Irish. Other stouts I really like are Yards Love Stout, Lancaster Milk Stout, and anything Left Hand puts out. For the adventurous, both Troegs Grand Cacao and Brooklyn Black Chocolate are great but will absolutely fuck you up.
On the porter side, I'm a big fan of Dock Street's Man Full of Trouble, Deschutes Black Butte Porter, and Yuengling Hershey's Chocolate Porter.
For the adventurous, I also like the two specialty stouts Southern Tier puts out, Thick Mint and Hot Cocoa (my favorite grilled cheese and milkshake place took the Hot Cocoa off their draught list and I'm DISTRAUGHT)
Finally, as a German beer bitch, I would be remiss not to include Kostritzer Schwarzbier, which is actually a black lager and goes well with pretty much everything

RFP Podcast Episode #240 – Ultra Dad Session #48: Sunday Coffee & Catch Up
It has been over a month since we both got together for Ultra Dad podcast so apologies for all those that tune in.  Today, a Sunday morning edition, we got caught up with stories, life, and some funny moments.  Maybe a nugget or two but mostly just some perspective around the holiday season, high school soccer, wrestling, and drama 😊, of course weather, beer and just lighthearted moments to help bypass some silliness.
Since it was early AZ time Mike had some coffee and water.  Bryan, just back from a run enjoyed a Troegs Grand Cacao Chocolate Stout.
The RFP Ultra Dad’s Podcast is sponsored by Time on the Trails – delivering you a customized experience out on the trails in Arizona and beyond.  Please visit us at www.tottaz.com and on social media via IG, FB, TW & LI.

Listen to the most recent episode of my podcast: RFP Podcast Episode #240 – Ultra Dad Session #48: Sunday Coffee & Catch Up
 How’d we get here?
The Ultra Dad’s Podcast came from an idea Cindy Shane created.  Well, she planted the idea in our head after listening to the first time Bryan was on the RFP Podcast in May 2020.  There have many times over the years when we speak on the phone or in person the “we should be recording this” line comes out.  Well, here we are jumping in with both feet, like we tend to do, sharing with you our perspectives on life.  Let’s be candid – we are not perfect, and we fail often. Our favorite term to use is “it’s not ideal” and there have been countless times we’ve uttered, “a plan is great until you are punched in the face;” – but we do laugh a lot, at ourselves and/or each other mostly 😊.  All that said, there are those brief moments where things tend to fall into place and we, somehow, make it to that finish line – as ultrarunners yes, but most importantly has husbands, fathers, friends, and human beings.  We wanted to share those imperfections and those incredible moments that we’ve been fortunate enough to experience together over the last 30+ years.  So, sit back, grab a cold one, and hopefully this will be another time where things fall into place.

Made from Tröegs Grand Cacao Chocolate Stout and with Calabrian hot peppers, Tröegs Independent Brewing releases Grand Cacao Beer Cheese. Look for this and Mad Elf Beer Cheese today.
Tumblr media
Press Release
HERSHEY, PA - Tröegs Independent Brewing has once again teamed up with The GIANT Company and Caputo Brothers Creamery of Spring Grove, Pa., to debut a fourth limited-edition beer cheese – this time using the Hershey, PA, brewery’s newest year-round beer, Grand Cacao Chocolate Stout.
Like the other three cheeses, Grand Cacao Beer Cheese is made with milk from Pennsylvania dairy farms.
“These beer cheeses are literally saving local dairy farms,” says Caputo Brothers President Rynn Caputo. “We pride ourselves not only on making cheese that tastes good, but also does good. And so far, these beer cheeses have helped two Pennsylvania dairies stay in business.”
Grand Cacao Beer Cheese starts with 100% Pennsylvania cow’s milk. At Caputo’s York County creamery, cheesemakers bathe the curds in Grand Cacao, which features notes of milk chocolate, roasty grain and hints of sweet cream. The addition of Calabrian peperoncini adds flecks of color and what Rynn calls an “elevated spiciness.”
The result is a sweet and creamy cheese with bright pops of heat and subtle chocolate notes.
And with the holidays on the horizon, don’t miss the return of Mad Elf Beer Cheese, which debuted last October and quickly became a fan favorite. Also made with 100% Pennsylvania cow’s milk, Mad Elf Beer Cheese is a creamy, savory, and sweet cheese with notes of cinnamon, chocolate, coffee, and honey.
Both Grand Cacao Beer Cheese and Mad Elf Beer Cheese are available while supplies last at GIANT, MARTIN’S and GIANT Heirloom Market locations. Select beer cheeses are also available for delivery via caputobrotherscreamery.com or in person at Tröegs.
To learn more about this unique collaboration, please visit the Tröegs blog.

Ed. Note: Local Memphis breweries currently have a roster of stouts, porters, and lagers to satisfy during cold days—or at least during “pretend” cold days when you can wear a jacket and enjoy the patio. Contributor Blake has done the hard work of sampling the local offerings, so here are his personal recommendations for Memphis beer this season. Today I’m on the patio at Ghost River in shorts. Later this week I’m sure I’ll be running for an umbrella and my warm coat. So while the weather goes full “Memphis” on us, our city’s breweries have been busy at work producing some glorious beers to keep us happy in any condition. We did some drinking so you’d know all about them. (In no particular order) Wiseacre’s Barrel Aged Snowbeard Barleywine (12.4% ABV) Coming in on the cold winds to warm you up with its powerful flavors, this year’s Snowbeard is impressive.  Wiseacre aged the barleywine (strong ale) for a year in bourbon barrels, and the result is a fantastic beer with a complex profile. They say it has caramel and jam, but all I can say is that the malts and hops perfectly balance out the fantastic sugars and sweetness. If that 12.4% beer wasn’t enough to guarantee your need for an Uber or Lyft, they’ve also created the Calculator Dopplebock Lager (10% ABV) which is sweet with a deep mouthfeel of toffee flavors that had me wanting to order many more. High Cotton’s Double Chocolate Stout (7% ABV) Take in the aroma of High Cotton’s Double Chocolate Stout, and you’ll imagine a thick slice of decadent chocolate cake; taste a sip of the beer, and you’ll get all the chocolate flavor without the sweetness. High Cotton added plenty of Cacao nibs during secondary fermentation for that smooth, chocolate flavor, and I’m sure glad they did—this is one very enjoyable beer. If you’re looking for more relaxed but still enjoyable beer you could drink all day, try their English Mild (3.2% ABV) which has a nice pub-beer quality to it, while being low in alcohol so it can be enjoyed for a long afternoon in the taproom.  Boscos’ Ed’s Porter (6.6% ABV) I get excited anytime Boscos has a porter available, so I was ecstatic to see the Ed’s Porter back on tap.  Dark roasted malts with hops create a deep full-bodied porter, with less sweetness than I expect from porters. The flavors of this one keep my palate entertained until the last drop. On the special tap at Boscos is their Belgian Quad (10.1% ABV) full of complex flavors of sugars and malts. As mentioned to me, “this beer is strong, amber and dangerous.” I agree: dangerously delicious.  Memphis Made’s The Judge Porter (6% ABV) My last trip to Memphis Made was great, as I constantly want dark beers and they deliver a multitude. The Judge is a chocolate-vanilla porter with roasted cocoa nibs that bring the tastiness porter fans crave. Less sweet but equally delicious is the Drew’s Day Off Stout (6.1% ABV), an oatmeal stout with hearty mouthfeel and flavors, and their Orange Drewlious (6.1 ABV) which is the Drew’s Day Off with some added orange peel.  You just can’t go wrong with these local beers. Crosstown’s Spacebird Donut Stout (5.2% ABV) The first stout out of Crosstown was a big hit for those looking for a smooth, sweet stout experience.  It’s a pastry stout, which is a style that can encompass all sorts of extremely sweet concoctions, most with higher alcohol content. This makes Spacebird’s lower ABV more enjoyable for casual taproom and patio fun. If you don’t want to go the stout route, check out their NYX Czech Dark Lager (5% ABV) which has the dark roasty flavors of the malts with a clean mouthfeel and drinking experience.  Meddlesome’s Under Pressure Vanilla Porter (4.4% ABV) With strong vanilla flavors and a bitter malty bite, Under Pressure delivers on the type of beer you need while sitting by the fireplace after a cold day. For a sweet porter, it doesn’t have the smoothest mouthfeel I’d expect, but the flavors are hard to beat.   View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Meddlesome Brewing (@meddlesomebrewing) on Jan 12, 2020 at 9:49am PST Also available currently is their Dirty ‘Dova Imperial IPA (8.2%), which for an IPA, doesn’t have as harsh of a hoppy bite as you’d think.  This beer is a perfect Winter beer for IPA fans.   Rock’n Dough’s Mr. Sweet Potato Head (10.1% ABV) I first had this beer two years ago at Cooper Young Beer Fest and was happy when I saw it again on the beer list at Rock’n Dough when I went in on a busy Friday night.  If you’re a pumpkin beer fan (and I am) you’ll love the spice and sweet potato flavors. At 10.1%, it packs quite a punch, but it sure is a tasty punch. Rock ‘n’ Dough Beer Flight The Strong Silent Type Belgian Blonde (9% ABV) isn’t a typical beer style to think about in the winter, but it’s so delicious I couldn’t leave it off the list, and at 9% it can keep you warm in the cold.  For a blonde ale, it had wonderful flavors from the Belgian yeast which made it hard to order only one.   Ghost River’s Rocket-88 Oatmeal Stout (6.5% ABV) This new addition to the canned seasonal offerings from GRB is slightly sweet with a smooth mouthfeel, a beer that works perfectly by the fire pit or on the patio. Fun fact: the can art was created by Memphis artist Birdcap. If you’re looking for a bitter non-sweet offering, try their Dry Irish Stout (5.25% ABV) which delivers a dark-roasted, hearty stout experience.    View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Ghost River Brewing Co. Mexican Hot Chocolate Beers: Chocolate, Spice and Everything Nice
Credit: CraftBeer.com
January 29, 2018
Chocolate originated in Central America, and its history dates back to well-before Columbus sailed the ocean blue. Originally, native cultures like the Mayans and Aztecs consumed chocolate as a drink, and softened the intense bitterness of cacao with spices like vanilla and peppers (there’s even some evidence the drink contained alcohol). When the Europeans arrived and brought sugar with them, chocolate transitioned into its modern form.
Many craft brewers are honoring chocolate’s liquid ancestry by brewing Mexican hot chocolate-inspired beers with cacao, vanilla, peppers, cinnamon and other spices. Since many beer styles brewed with dark malts already have some chocolate flavors (as well as complementary flavors like caramel or coffee), styles like porter and stout can beautifully evoke this ancient beverage’s appeal while adding further complexity.
American Imperial Stout is most often employed because of its dessert-like decadence and ability to stand up to strong spices. But with a careful touch, lower strength dark styles like a robust porter and American Stout can also receive the south-of-the-border chocolate treatment.

11 Mexican Hot Chocolate-Inspired Beers to Try
Mexican Hot Chocolate | Aslin Beer Co. | Herndon, VA
The idea for Aslin’s Mexican Hot Chocolate beer came from the owner’s favorite cake. (Liz Traks)
“The idea of Mexican Hot Chocolate came from one of Richard’s favorite cakes to make during the holiday season,” says Aslin Beer co-owner Andrew Kelley of co-owner Richard Thompson. Kelley, Thompson, and third partner Kai Leszkowski homebrewed the dessert-inspired beer first, and their successful experiment turned into their Mexican Hot Chocolate Imperial Stout. Aslin, which is named for the maiden name of the three sisters the partners are married to (brownie points, boys), conditions this big beer with Madagascar vanilla beans, cinnamon, nutmeg and three different kinds of chili peppers. “All of this is balanced by the sweetness and roast of our 10 percent base state,” says Kelley.
Mayan Sunrise | Latitude 42 Brewing Co. | Portage, MI
Latitude 42 brewer Scott Freitas tasted a few Mexican chocolate-inspired beers at the Great American Beer Festival years ago and knew he wanted to brew one at his Michigan brewery. He settled on brewing a 7% ABV American Stout for the base, and added Ancho, Guajillo, and Habanero peppers and cinnamon bark to get the perfect level of spice and complexity.
“What makes this beer unique is the balance of all the peppers,” says Freitas. “You don’t want it to be too hot, or not spicy enough. It’s a delicate line.”
Aztec Gold | Gizmo Brew Works | Raleigh, NC
Gizmo Brew Works is known for quirky, small-batch beers, and their 9.2% Aztec Gold Imperial Chocolate Stout got its start as an extremely small batch indeed–the beer was the winner of a homebrewing contest between employees. The beer became the first in the brewery’s Inventor Series, a group of 12 high gravity beers that Gizmo rotates through on a monthly basis. Aztec Gold is brewed with local cacao nibs and Madagascar vanilla beans, and is named in honor of the belief that cocoa was so prized in Aztec culture that it was sometimes used as currency.
(VISIT: Find a U.S. Brewery)
Mexican Chocolate Stout | Copper Kettle Brewing Co. | Denver, CO
Copper Kettle owner and head brewer Jeremy Gobien speaks with obvious reverence of his beer he says is inspired by the cacao drinks used in sacred Mayan religious ceremonies. “Unlike other chocolate-themed dark beers, we intentionally created a beer with a relatively dry body,” says Gobien. “To this starting canvas, we added layers of spices including cassia cinnamon and a blend of three Central American chili peppers including Ancho, Guajillo and habanero, and then finish with high-quality cacao. The resulting experience is complex and layered.” While cinnamon is prevalent when you first sip this 7% ABV stout, Gobien says the chili heat soon kicks in. “After a few seconds, the subtle burn on the habanero begins to blossom and combine with the cinnamon flavors.” Gobien explains this beer is “designed for beer lovers looking to challenge their definition of what beer is.”
(READ: 9 Smoke Beers to Light Your Fire)
Xocoveza | Stone Brewing | Escondido, CA
Stone’s Xocoveza was original a homebrew competition winner. (Stone Brewing Co.)
Stone Brewing’s coveted Xocoveza stout was never intended to be part of the brewery’s permanent rotation of seasonal beers, but beer lovers wouldn’t take “No” for an answer. The beer was first brewed after winning the popular California brewery’s homebrew competition in 2014. While it was meant to be a one-time specialty brew, the beer proved so popular, the brewery decided to add it to their annual line-up as a winter release. The beer’s name is a portmanteau of the “xocolatl,” the word for the Aztec cacao drink on which the beer is based, and “cerveza,” the Spanish word for beer. In addition to the usual cocoa, vanilla, cinnamon, and peppers, Xocoveza’s complex flavor is aided by coffee and nutmeg. And as if the drink wasn’t legit enough as is, Stone even sources organic cocoa beans to make their own 100 percent cacao bars to use in the brewing process!
Mexican Cake | Westbrook Brewing | Mount Pleasant, SC
While Westbrook Brewing is perhaps best known for low alcohol, esoteric European beer styles like Grätzer, Lichtenhainer, and especially gose (not to mention a solid IPA), they also released one of the first Mexican hot chocolate-inspired imperial stouts to gain cult status. Mexican Cake was released for the brewery’s first anniversary in 2012, and has become one of the most coveted beers in the country. Brewed with cacao nibs, cinnamon sticks, vanilla beans, and habanero peppers, a small batch of this 10.5% ABV beer even makes it into rare Pappy Van Winkle bourbon barrels.
(READ: Brewery Offers Free Weddings for Valentine’s Day)
Hunahpu’s Imperial Stout | Cigar City Brewing | Tampa, FL
Credit: Cigar City Brewing
If you’re reading this site, you probably don’t need me to tell you what Hunahpu is. The legendary spiced imperial stout from Tampa’s Cigar City is released once a year on Hunahpu’s Day in March, a celebratory festival held at the brewery. This 11% ABV behemoth brewed with cacao nibs, Madagascar vanilla, cinnamon, and two different peppers takes its name from Mayan mythology. The Hunahpu family of heroes overcame great odds to “defeat the Dark Lords,” according to the brewery’s website. Read into that rivalry what you will.
Mayan Mocha Stout | Odd Side Ales | Grand Haven, MI
While the Odd Side Ales folks make imperial and barrel-aged versions of their Mayan Mocha Stout, it’s nice to be able to add a (somewhat) session strength beer to this list. At 6.5% ABV, Mayan Mocha is brewed with Dutch chocolate, coffee, cinnamon, nutmeg, and habaneros to achieve a smooth beer that balances dessert flavors with subtle heat. Not every Mexican chocolate beer has to hit you like a luchador wrestler, and Mayan Mocha proves it.
(COOK WITH BEER: Find Hundreds of Recipes)
Mexican Morning | Conclave Brewing | Raritan Twp., NJ
Conclave Brewing takes this concept even further down the ABV scale. Mexican Morning is only 5.9% ABV, and since it’s based on the brewery’s Espresso Milk Stout, it could be the perfect brunch beer. Spiced with the usual potpourri of cinnamon, cacao, vanilla, and arbol peppers, Mexican Morning would go well with fried chorizo and eggs and a chocolate concha for the perfect Mexican breakfast.
Mexican Achromatic | Weldwerks Brewing Co. | Greeley, CO
Steampunk-themed Weldwerks Brewing Co. has been on a hot streak recently, picking up medals at the World Beer Cup, Great American Beer Festival, and Festival of Wood and Barrel-Aged Beer in the last 18 months. But whereas many Mexican chocolate-inspired stouts aim for heat as well, this brewery’s 10% ABV Mexican Achromatic eschews peppers for a complex blend of earthier spices, including Vietnamese and Mexican cinnamon sticks, Indonesian cassia bark, Madagascar vanilla beans, and Ghanan cacao nibs. A healthy proportion of oats in the mash and an extended boil make this stout chewy, full-bodied, and unbelievably smooth.
Oaxaca Mole Milk Stout | Benchtop Brewing | Norfolk, VA
Inspired by local restaurant’s version of the popular Mexican mole dish, the folks at Benchtop Brewing crafted a unique take on this substyle of beer by seeking to evoke the flavors of the savory chocolate entrée rather than liquid cocoa. The brewing team added piloncillo sugar, star anise, toasted almonds, cinnamon, cacao nibs, and Ancho, Guajillo, and mulato peppers to their 4.8% milk stout to create a sessionable mole-inspired beer that is smooth, full-flavored, and complex.

Be on the lookout for Bourbon Barrel-Aged Mocha Ten FIDY Imperial Stout from Oskar Blues
Press Release
LONGMONT, CO., BOULDER, CO., and BREVARD, NC ... Oskar Blues Brewery will release a very limited amount of Bourbon Barrel-Aged Mocha Ten FIDY Imperial Stout onJuly 7, (National Chocolate Day) at the Oskar Blues Boulder, Longmont, and Brevard Taproom locations. The O.G. Imperial Stout got a one-way golden ticket to the inside of a barrel, where it went ass-over-elbows into a Cholaca chocolate river and then hotbox'd with Hotbox Roasters' coldbrew until it manifested as a smooth mocha mutha.
Bourbon Barrel Aged Ten FIDY was massively doused with unsweetened pure liquid cacao made by our friends at Cholaca, then dosed with Hotbox Roasters’ cold brew from Mexican coffee beans. Get it in a grande, a venti, or a trenta… just kidding, put it straight in yer mouthhole. "Ten FIDY Imperial Stout doesn't know how to use its inside voice in the first place; and on this one, we hooked it up to a Cholaca-and-coffee amplifier and turned the volume up to 11," said Tim Matthews, Head of Brewing Operations for Oskar Blues.
BA Mocha Ten FIDY will be available in Oskar Blues Boulder, Longmont and Brevard taprooms only. Numbered wristbands will be handed out at 9:30am but a line may begin to form much earlier. Wristbands will allow folks to (reasonably) wander without losing their place in line. Each wristband has a number on it, and yes that number does matter. Beer will be sold in order according to the number system so Mocha seekers must be present when their number is called. Each person may purchase up to five cases of BA Mocha Ten FIDY. 19.2 oz cans come in 12-count cases. If there are cans left at 3pm (both MST and EST), a “No Limit” rule kicks in and peeps will be able to purchase to their hearts' content.
At that hour on a Saturday, of course there will be breakfast food available; and the coffee isn’t just in the beer - Hotbox Roasters will be on the scene to satisfy wake-up needs. All sales (draft and cans) will begin at 10am. A limited amount of BA Mocha Ten FIDY will be on draft, 10 ounces at a time.
PRICING:
4 oz pour on DRAFT = $4
10 oz pour on DRAFT = $10
One 19.2 oz CAN of Mocha BA Ten FIDY = $15
One CASE (12 CANs) = $180
Crowler and/or Growler fills will not be available. For this event, participating taprooms will accept cash and credit card. Checks will not be accepted. AHA discounts are not applicable at the BA Mocha Ten FIDY release. Good times and rare beer revelry are applicable. Meet us in the Fudge Room, er, the Taproom on July 7 to get yer hands on this beast.

Stone Brewing lanza Xocoveza Imperial Mocha Stout
