The Gorilla Lady, sword swallowers, and the man with the iron tongue. These unique characters were sideshow acts that travelled the country in a “freak show.” Another member of this weird and wonderful act was Grady Stiles Jr., aka “Lobster Boy.” Grady was born with ectrodactyly, a malformation in which the fingers and toes are fused together to form “claw-like” extremities. His family had a long history of this malformation. “Good evening, ladies and gentlemen, I am the Lobster Boy” he would bellow to the stunned crowd as he sat on top of a cushion, showing his pincer-like hands and feet.
Grady went on to have three children, two of which were born with ectrodactyly. He brought them along to perform as “Lobster Family,” in which they portrayed themselves as a loving family with one slight difference. Home life, however, was nothing short of horrific. Grady was an alcoholic who frequently beat his wife, Mary Teresa. His other daughter, Teresa, had a budding romance with an 18-year-old Jack Layne. She felt trapped in the grim family home and thought he could be her way out if she married him. A date was set and they were to be wed. Grady had other plans, however, and shot him dead the evening before their wedding day. “Told you I’d kill him,” Grady jibed at his distraught teenage daughter. Due to his special needs, it was determined that prison would be unaccommodating. After being found guilty, he was sentenced to 15 years probation and returned home.
There was a honeymoon period for about two weeks when Grady quit drinking. As soon as he started pouring down the liquor, the abuse continued. All three children and Mary were beaten with belts and threatened with murder. “I’m going to kill you but the timing’s just not right,” he sneered to Mary. He already had one murder under his belt, after all. Grady even used his disability as a weapon and frequently shoved his claw-like hands into their eyes and nipped them. On one occasion, he attempted to rip out Mary’s implanted contraception. Mary decided enough was enough and she needed to kill Grady. She was too afraid to leave him because she feared what he would do to her or the children. She recalled the final straw: “He was kneeling by my bed, breathing that steel whisky breath. He was drawing the knife across my throat. Then he dropped it and crawled away.” In November of 1992, Mary and her son from a previous marriage, Harry Glenn Newman Jr., aka the “Human Blockhead,” hired 17-year-old Chris Wyant to kill Grady. He was shot in the back of the head as he watched television.
The trial itself had a carnival-like atmosphere with many of the Grady’s fellow carnival-folk showing up in court. Mary was claiming battered wife syndrome and she had a profusion of witnesses to confirm her claim. “He was a disabled man but that didn’t prevent him from doing some of the things other men do,” said one carnival worker. On one afternoon, Grady’s son scooted across the floor to “show them my dad wasn’t a helpless invalid” like the prosecution had attempted to argue. His other daughter, Cathy, took the stand to detail the time she had to have an emergency cesarean after Grady had beaten her for defending Mary.
Chris was sentenced to 27 years in prison, Harry was sentenced to life in prison and Mary was sentenced to 12 years.

garrison "grady" oliver knox jr.
thirty two. podcast host. amateur sleuth. casey deidrick.
grady: [looks deeply into your eyes; pats your knee, sympathetically.] grady: “i don’t care.”
content warnings: mentions child neglect, parental abandonment, missing parent, (suspected) death of a parent, alcoholism.
dominant traits. opinionated, surface level arrogant, judgmental, creative, sarcastic, invasive, blunt/crass, antisocial, stubborn, self-aware, unyielding, grudge-holding, mouthy (read as: "brutally honest"), insensitive, protective, intuitive, reactive, self-reliant, observant, adaptable, impulsive.
fictional parallels. connor welsh (htgawm); jess mariano (gilmore girls); jughead jones (riverdale); stiles stilinski (teen wolf); nancy drew (cw nd); veronica mars (vm).
○ his name is grady. no one calls him garrison, not anymore. not since his mother was around. i say around, and not alive, because she isn't dead. just missing. a town native who moved away when she was pregnant with him, but brought a lot of the darker parts of miriam's well with her. he was raised on unfinished stories and embellished half truths about the place his mother grew up in─the place he eventually called home at fourteen─and, ultimately, is probably responsible for his interest in all things unexplained. and his father, well... his father is around georgia, somewhere, he supposes. they haven't spoken for a while. believe it of not, a relationship with your son doesn't cure at the bottom of a bottle.
○ his life pretty much always baseline sucks and his attitude and demeanor mirrors that. which is fine since grads is the type of guy who makes more acquaintances than he does friends. and even more enemies than that. he will casually put his nose in your business because "that’s my job" and he makes no apologies for who he is.
○ when he was younger he wanted to be a journalist, a photographer, and novelist and you can tell. too curious for his own good and heavily believes in not only checking his sources, but questioning everything. he's not afraid to stand up for the things he believes in or for the people he finds deserving of it, and has very little issue or care to what what consequences these actions might breed. he also may or may not be a coffee addict.
the corner booth at the local diner; twilight zone background noise; the smell of coffee seeping from moist skin; sweeping honesty; not only is the truth out there, but it also probably sucks; ring around the rosie was about the black plague; anti-social social club; dry sarcasm over milkshakes; swear jar that has his name on it; the company misery loves; mean nerd aesthetic; late nights in the studio with great music and a constant opinion.
plot hooks.
○ his family. well, his mother's family. the people she left behind, whatever's left of them. possibly an aunt (preferably his mother's twin, who he had no idea existed, so imagine that shock) who took him in when she went missing at fourteen and any potential children she might have? because cousin relationships are great and no one has your back or will kick your ass quite like family. can't imagine them being well off, more like town trash and maybe this aunt was the best of them. ○ veronica mars needs clients. ACAB indeed, but sometimes people need solutions to problems that a corrupted small-town government isn't capable (or willing) to get them. what does that mean? for the low price of [insert negotiation here] this knox boy will go out of his way to find the answers you need. husband fucking the secretary? photos will hold up nicely in divorce court─not to mention i'm a ~fantastic photographer. you get the idea. sure, it's not the prettiest (or cleanest) job, but it's easier to make money off liars, thieves, and cheating spouses than you might realize. especially in a small town with such an ugly history. ○ the unlucky barista/cashier/counter girl. it'd be nice to have a little back-and-forth relationship with someone who might work for his aunt? i imagined [his aunt] owns a coffee shop or cafe (or something of the sort) and he's always in there helping himself to free coffee and snacks and likes to poke and prod this person when he's bored via asking a million intrusive questions or just being his curious, obnoxious self. taken by noor ♡ ○ co-hosts of the night shift. well, it's not the doomsday podcast, certainly not with their following, but like a lot of people who find their way to miriam's well, they share the same basic general interest (unsolved mysteries, serial killers/true crime, paranormal/ghost hunting, lore, extraterrestrial, etc.) except, grady also likes to use his platform to bitch and moan about other things that happen in town. some topics more pointed than others, and often about public officials he has no business putting on the air and his fellow casters probably hate him doing. no one likes a target on their back. ○ pizza buddy + longtime friend. someone (preferably someone he considers close/from when he first moved to mw) who will go with him to flying saucers at two am for "out of stock" garlic knots (and/or an employee he bribes with🍃for said knots 👀) because he's an actual human garbage disposal and he hates himself just enough to like the aesthetic and that entire plot sounds fucking awesome?? bonus points if they both used to work there when they were younger, and now this shit is habit/a bastard tradition at this point. ○ doomsday descendants. characters who are part of the families who have abduction histories that he can interview and broadcast on his podcast─also pick their brain about every little detail and absolutely get on their nerves in some way or another.

The opening credits in this season of American Horror Story, called “Freakshow,” show fictionalized versions of real historical performers. They are identified by J Tithonus Pednaud on his website The Human Marvels.
There are several acts in the opening credits that have been popular throughout sideshow history, such as sword-swallowing and doing the human blockhead. (Ask me to show you if you ever see me at a party!) Listed here are some real, specific performers of circus fame.
1. Cephalophagous babies are a type of conjoined twin that are conjoined at the head. There has been no recording of any living past infancy, but deformed babies and fetuses in jars were a popular attraction in traveling sideshows, dime museums and the like as “pickled punks.” Sometimes they were real, sometimes they were fabricated fakes, or “gaffs.”
2. Nicodemus the Indescribable was born with truncated limbs and was known for being incredibly strong and an amazing acrobat.
3. The Ohio Bigfoot Lady wore custom-made size-30 shoes. Her real name was Franny Mills and she had lymphademia, which caused fluid build-up and swelling in her feet and legs.
4. The Lobster Boy is based on Grady Stiles Jr., who had ectrodactyly. Many members of the Stiles family, including Grady’s father and two of his children, also had lobster-claw hands. He was considered a bully and an abusive drunk. Grady was convicted of murdering his daughter’s fiancé, but was not incarcerated because he insisted that the jails would not be able to handle his disability. As the story goes, he allegedly resumed beating his wife and children, so they hired a hit man to kill him.
5. The three-legged woman was named Blanche Dumas and also had extra breasts between her legs. She moved to Paris to become a courtesan, and was a very popular one at that. (This one I had to remove because of Tumblr’s policies, which is why I’m re-posting this now without images of Dumas.)
#AHS Freakshow#Medical#Sideshow#Circus History#American Horror Story#Seems like they whitewashed some of these performers huh?

Descended from a notorious carny family, Grady Stiles Jr. traded on the deformity that gave his hands and feet the look of lobster claws, to achieve fame as the "Lobster Boy".
