Let’s say you just searched Google to learn more about this new AI Overview feature that everyone’s talking about. If your query triggers an AI Overview—and not every query will—then you might see an AI-generated summary of this very article at the top of your results. These new AI Overviews in Google Search present users with AI-generated answers to queries that are culled from information on the web, and they’re presented in a way that gives you the answer you seek without ever requiring you to click on a web link or even learn the names of the publications that the AI used as sources.
Google has already released a nascent version of AI Overviews within something called the Search Generative Experience, but it was only available to users who opted in. However, at the company’s I/O developer conference this week, Google announced that the newly renamed AI Overviews is now receiving a wider launch; everyone in the US who uses Google to search the web or ask a question will now see AI Overviews at the top of their results—again, if their question can be answered by a summary.
Can I Turn Off AI Overviews?
What if you’d rather just see web links? Unfortunately, AI Overviews are baked into the default search results page now. You can’t opt out of seeing them in your results. While there’s no way to fully disable AI Overviews for your Google account, there are a couple of methods you can use to get a search results page filled with web links.
First, there's the manual method of selecting a special filtered view after each individual query. After landing on the search result page topped with the AI Overview, click on the More tab—it should now appear among other filter options like Images, Videos, Shopping—and click Web. You’ll see a results page just showing links to actual websites.
Second, you can install a browser extension that automatically forces this web-only view of the search results page. Developers have been hard at work since I/O; there are already options available for Chrome and Vivaldi, as well as add-ons for Firefox. Other browsers will likely get extensions soon.
What's in an AI Overview?
When can you expect your query to trigger an AI-generated summary of the results? “AI Overviews appear for complex queries,” says Mallory De Leon, a Google spokesperson. “You'll find AI Overviews in your Google Search results when our systems determine that generative AI can be especially helpful–for example, when you want to quickly understand information from a range of sources.” During my initial tests, it felt like the AI Overviews popped up almost at random for queries, and the summaries appeared for simple questions as well as more complicated asks.
According to De Leon, the AI Overview is powered by a customized version of Google’s Gemini model that’s supplemented with aspects of the company’s Search system, like the Knowledge Graph that has billions of general facts.
One of my core hesitations about this feature as it rolls out is the continued potential for AI hallucinations, more commonly known as lies. When you interact with Google’s Gemini chatbot, a disclaimer at the bottom reads: “Gemini may display inaccurate info, including about people, so double-check its responses.” There’s no such disclaimer added to the bottom of the AI Overview, which often simply reads, “Generative AI is experimental.”
When asked why there’s no mention of potential hallucinations for AI Overviews, De Leon emphasizes that Google wants to still offer high-quality search results and mentions that the company did adversarial red-teaming tests to uncover potential weak points for the feature.
“This implementation of generative AI is rooted in Search’s core quality and safety systems, with built-in guardrails to prevent low-quality or harmful information from surfacing,” she says. “AI Overviews are designed to highlight information that can be easily verified by the supporting information that we surface.”
Knowing this, you might still want to click through the webpage links to double-check that the information is actually correct. Though it’s hard to imagine many users, who are often looking for quick answers, will spend extra time reading over the source material for Google’s AI-generated answer.
Liz Reid, Google’s head of Search, recently told my colleague Lauren Goode that AI Overviews are expected to arrive for countries outside of the United States before the end of 2024, so over a billion people will likely soon encounter this new feature. As someone whose job relies on readers actually clicking links and spending time reading the articles, of course I’m apprehensive about this change—and I’m not alone.
Beyond concerns from publishers, it also remains unclear what additional impacts might trickle down to users from Google’s AI Overviews. Yes, OpenAI’s ChatGPT and other AI tools are quite popular in Silicon Valley tech circles, but this feature will likely expose billions of people, who have never used a chatbot before, to AI-generated text. Even though AI Overviews are designed to save you time, they might lead to less trustworthy results.

like, there is a point to be made if all the AI does is predict tokens and manipulate words as symbols. but if it can link words and images and sounds together, if it can relibably make a conection between what the word "dog" is, other words its statistically connnected to, images it's statistically related to and sounds that it is statistically related to (and how all those words and images and sounds are all statistically related to each other and onto subsequent words and so on and so on) and NONE OF THAT counts as true understanding then im starting to be at a loss for what "true understanding" means

Google is reportedly gearing up to introduce its interpretation of the large action model concept known as “Project Jarvis,” with a preview potentially arriving as soon as December, according to The Information. This project aims to streamline various tasks for users, including research gathering, product purchasing, and flight booking.
Sources familiar with the initiative indicate that Jarvis will operate through a future version of Google’s Gemini technology and is specifically optimized for use with the Chrome web browser.
The primary focus of Project Jarvis is to help users automate everyday web-based tasks. The tool is designed to take and interpret screenshots, allowing it to interact with web pages by clicking buttons or entering text on behalf of users. While in its current state, Jarvis reportedly takes a few seconds to execute each action, the goal is to enhance user efficiency by handling routine online activities more seamlessly.
This move aligns with a broader trend among major AI companies working on similar capabilities. For instance, Microsoft is developing Copilot Vision, which will facilitate interactions with web pages.
Apple is also expected to introduce features that allow its AI to understand on-screen content and operate across multiple applications. Additionally, Anthropic has launched a beta update for Claude, which aims to assist users in managing their computers, while OpenAI is rumored to be working on a comparable solution.
Despite the anticipation surrounding Jarvis, The Information warns that the timeline for Google’s preview in December may be subject to change. The company is considering a limited release to select testers to help identify and resolve any issues before a broader launch. This approach reflects Google’s intention to refine the tool through user feedback, ensuring it meets expectations upon its official introduction.

After decades of dominating the Internet, Google now faces multiple challenges, with little time to react. The launch of ChatGPT dealt a significant blow to Google, which had already been researching generative AI for years but didn’t yet have a commercial product. The rapid development of Gemini was its response, but now another formidable competitor has emerged, one that may make things even harder for Google.
We’re talking about Meta, the company that even changed its name to bet on the metaverse, but which, in recent months, has shifted its focus toward Artificial Intelligence. And far from being at a disadvantage, the company led by Mark Zuckerberg has managed to quickly get on par by integrating Meta AI into WhatsApp, Instagram, and the rest of its platform’s apps.
Now, according to The Information, Meta is preparing a game-changing move that could mean we no longer need to rely on Google: its own search engine. According to internal sources, the company has been using ‘crawlers’ — programs that index the Internet, much like those used by Google’s search engine to discover new pages for user searches.
Until now, Meta has been content to use Google’s search engine or Microsoft Bing when users asked Meta AI questions about news or recent events; however, with its own search engine, Meta would no longer rely on third parties, allowing it to deliver a more tailored experience with greater control over the results. In addition to web indexing, Meta will use direct access to Reuters, thanks to an agreement signed last week allowing its AI to use news published by the agency for its responses.
Until recently, no one wanted to directly challenge Google with their own search engine — even Apple abandoned such an idea despite wanting to separate from its major competitor. But new AI-powered tools have opened the door for other Internet giants to offer their own search engines. However, Meta’s search engine would only be available within Meta AI, the chatbot that lets users start conversations with AI through any of the apps on its platform.
Meta isn’t the only one going after Google. The creators of ChatGPT have already announced their search engine, SearchGPT, and Microsoft used Copilot to boost traffic to Bing. In other words, Google suddenly has a lot of competition in its original product, and the question now is how it will respond.

Fundamentally, Hypercompute Cluster integrates the most advanced AI infrastructure technologies from Google Cloud, enabling you to install and operate several accelerators as a single, seamless unit. You can run your most demanding AI and HPC workloads with confidence thanks to Hypercompute Cluster’s exceptional performance and resilience, which includes features like targeted workload placement, dense resource co-location with ultra-low latency networking, and sophisticated maintenance controls to reduce workload disruptions.
For dependable and repeatable deployments, you can use pre-configured and validated templates to build up a Hypercompute Cluster with just one API call. This include containerized software with orchestration (e.g., GKE, Slurm), framework and reference implementations (e.g., JAX, PyTorch, MaxText), and well-known open models like Gemma2 and Llama3. As part of the AI Hypercomputer architecture, each pre-configured template is available and has been verified for effectiveness and performance, allowing you to concentrate on business innovation.

Redefining CPU efficiency and performance with Google Axion Processors
CPUs are a cost-effective solution for a variety of general-purpose workloads, and they are frequently utilized in combination with AI workloads to produce complicated applications, even if TPUs and GPUs are superior at specialized jobs. Google Axion Processors, its first specially made Arm-based CPUs for the data center, at Google Cloud Next ’24. Customers using Google Cloud may now benefit from C4A virtual machines, the first Axion-based VM series, which offer up to 10% better price-performance compared to the newest Arm-based instances offered by other top cloud providers.
Additionally, compared to comparable current-generation x86-based instances, C4A offers up to 60% more energy efficiency and up to 65% better price performance for general-purpose workloads such as media processing, AI inferencing applications, web and app servers, containerized microservices, open-source databases, in-memory caches, and data analytics engines.
Titanium and Jupiter Network: Making AI possible at the speed of light
Titanium, the offload technology system that supports Google’s infrastructure, has been improved to accommodate workloads related to artificial intelligence. Titanium provides greater compute and memory resources for your applications by lowering the host’s processing overhead through a combination of on-host and off-host offloads. Furthermore, although Titanium’s fundamental features can be applied to AI infrastructure, the accelerator-to-accelerator performance needs of AI workloads are distinct.
Google has released a new Titanium ML network adapter to address these demands, which incorporates and expands upon NVIDIA ConnectX-7 NICs to provide further support for virtualization, traffic encryption, and VPCs. The system offers best-in-class security and infrastructure management along with non-blocking 3.2 Tbps of GPU-to-GPU traffic across RoCE when combined with its data center’s 4-way rail-aligned network.
Google’s Jupiter optical circuit switching network fabric and its updated data center network significantly expand Titanium’s capabilities. With native 400 Gb/s link rates and a total bisection bandwidth of 13.1 Pb/s (a practical bandwidth metric that reflects how one half of the network can connect to the other), Jupiter could handle a video conversation for every person on Earth at the same time. In order to meet the increasing demands of AI computation, this enormous scale is essential.
Hyperdisk ML is widely accessible
For computing resources to continue to be effectively utilized, system-level performance maximized, and economical, high-performance storage is essential. Google launched its AI-powered block storage solution, Hyperdisk ML, in April 2024. Now widely accessible, it adds dedicated storage for AI and HPC workloads to the networking and computing advancements.
Hyperdisk ML efficiently speeds up data load times. It drives up to 11.9x faster model load time for inference workloads and up to 4.3x quicker training time for training workloads.
With 1.2 TB/s of aggregate throughput per volume, you may attach 2500 instances to the same volume. This is more than 100 times more than what big block storage competitors are giving.
Reduced accelerator idle time and increased cost efficiency are the results of shorter data load times.
Multi-zone volumes are now automatically created for your data by GKE. In addition to quicker model loading with Hyperdisk ML, this enables you to run across zones for more computing flexibility (such as lowering Spot preemption).

TOP NEWS & ARTICLES 
In the biggest SEO news perhaps ever, a massive list of Google ranking elements was leaked this week. Here’s an overview, including links to the two main leak announcements and their analysis. It would seem that Google wasn’t always honest when they told us some algorithm elements did or did not exist. Google took nearly 2 days to speak publicly about it, but didn’t say much. Expect a lot more analysis in the coming weeks. 
Instagram is updating its algorithm to favour original creators and smaller accounts, and remove reposted content from recommendations. “This won’t affect “a set of publishers” identified by Instagram with licensing agreements or resharing permissions from content creators, according to the blog post.”
Google is adding AI Overviews to US search immediately, with other countries to follow in the future. "AI Overviews gives answers to queries using generative AI technology powered by Google Gemini. It provides a few snippets of an answer based on its understanding of queries and the content it found on the topic across the web.” Right now, it is only affecting a small number of queries, however. While these will sometimes cover similar topics to featured snippets, the latter still exist. Early testing indicates that it does not currently show up when a search appears to be about buying something. Which is good, because you can’t turn it off, other than filtering your search to “Web” after doing it.  Oh, and Google did not waste time figuring out how to include advertising in the AI overviews - it took just one week. As with most much-heralded AI launches, AI Overviews are fumbling badly; here’s a summary of the many news articles mocking Google, including for recommending people glue cheese onto their pizza so it stays in place. 
Chrome has yet again announced that it will not end the use of tracking cookies on schedule; the new target date for starting to wind down their use is early 2025.
Reminder that your old Google Analytics files (aka Universal Analytics) will no longer be available after July 1, so download them now! “...consider archiving back to 2018 or so to ensure you have pre-pandemic data since the pandemic really presented data anomalies for many companies.” There is a spreadsheet add-on to make this easier. 
SEO: GOOGLE & OTHER SEARCH ENGINES 
Google’s March 2024 Core Update finished rolling out April 19. “A Google spokesperson said, “The updates led to larger quality improvements than we originally thought – you’ll now see 45% less low quality, unoriginal content in search results, versus the 40% improvement we expected across this work.” Experts are struggling to analyze it, in part due to how long it lasted. Not surprisingly, Reddit was a big winner, and sites with a lot of ads and affiliate links continue to lose. 
An update on how long your titles should be for Google. “So whether your titles get cut off or rewritten in SERPs, Google still uses the HTML title tag for ranking considerations, not the titles shown in SERPs.” The author’s research is too limited to draw reliable conclusions from, and most other research in this area over the last decade shows that shorter titles tend to rank better. However, she has pulled together many recent statements on title length and how it works, which is useful reading. 
A reminder that “keyword difficulty” is a subjective score that different tools may not agree on, and that also depends on your overall site/shop and its history. This applies to all sorts of keyword tools, including those used for marketplace sites. 
It looks like Google adding its AI to search results will have a strong impact on traffic, as it will answer questions without the need to click, and “only 47% of the top 10 traditional search results are sources for SGE.” [SGE is now called AI Overviews.] That means if a page is outside the top 10 now, it may still be used to generate the answers, and could even get clicks from being displayed in SGE. 
Still with AI, Google was fined €250 million by France for using news media to train its AI, Gemini. 
Google admits to deindexing many, many pages in February, due to quality issues.

Not Google
Both Microsoft and Google had excellent first quarters, with ad revenue up 12% and 13% respectively. “Bing reached over 140 million daily active users.”
OpenAI is apparently not starting their own search engine, contrary to rumours.
SOCIAL MEDIA - All Aspects, By Site
General
Here’s another of the periodic posts that tries to figure out the best times to post on different social media sites. It covers Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, Twitter and Pinterest.

Facebook (includes relevant general news from Meta)
In another recent AI fumble, Meta has introduced an AI assistant to its various products in several countries - but you can’t turn it off in the search bar. It may also show up in group chats, including discussions about parenting. “The Associated Press reported that an official Meta AI chatbot inserted itself into a conversation in a private Facebook group for Manhattan moms. It claimed it too had a child in school in New York City, but when confronted by the group members, it later apologized before its comments disappeared.”
Here’s more on Meta’s automated ad issue that is ramping up costs but decreasing sales for many, including small businesses. 
Meta is now offering its Verification for Business subscription package to more countries, and has added new tiers as well. 
While Meta had a strong 1st quarter financially, it projects weaker results through 2025 as it spends a ton on money trying to guide its AI offerings to profitability. 
Instagram
Instagram added some new features, including “Reveal”, which blurs Stories, and only releases the content once you DM the creator. 
Reels under 90 seconds perform better on Instagram than longer ones. 
To help avoid scammers on Instagram, learn how to identify and block fake accounts. 
Instagram’s Creator Marketplace - where businesses can search for influencers to promote their product - is now available in 10 more counties, including Germany, France and Indonesia. 
LinkedIn
You should be optimizing LinkedIn posts for the platform itself and outside search engines. The article includes tips for both personal and business pages.
LinkedIn is adding games you can play once a day, which sounds weird for a professional network. 
Pinterest
Pinterest’s summer trend report has arrived; apparently maximalism is in yet again.  
Reddit
Reddit is one of those sites that is getting worse lately as people try to get Google ranking through it (which is a whole other SEO story I have covered in these updates before).
ChatGPT will now be training on Reddit comments. The agreement meant a huge stock boost for Reddit. 
Reddit is trying to attract more French-speaking users by auto-translating the site in real-time using AI. 
After plenty of user complaints, Reddit is starting a new awards scheme. 
Snapchat
You can now edit your Snapchat messages within 5 minutes of sending, if you subscribe to Snapchat Plus. 
Threads
Meta wants more content on Threads, and is willing to pay well-known creators to create it. Invite only, of course.  
You can now filter out unwanted words on Threads. 
TikTok
While the US government has voted to ban TikTok if the company isn’t sold, there is a lot of time left before that could happen, and a legal battle to be fought. TikTok has already filed a lawsuit, as have some major creators. Meanwhile, small business owners and creators are understandably worried. From an article by the BBC: “According to March 2024 data from TikTok, more than seven million small US businesses use TikTok, and the company reported it drove $15bn (£12.04bn) in revenue for these enterprises in 2023.”

Social media advertising is now bigger than search ads, according to a recent report. Almost ⅔ of these ads are on various Meta properties.

18/8/24 The Olympics have come and gone. The highlight of the summer, there was enormous amount of space and connection in both opening ceremonies torch and closing ceremonies medals.
Last year Google posted a video reel of hits based on most frequent searches on its X page. various moments ranging from sports to pop music to protests and peace-advocates made the cut.
Today in sifting through the grain of consumer-apps, we rely on the unobtrusive Play Store. Google understood the mass appeal of social media and mobile support early on, and figured out service models like *GoogleTalk, *Google+ and *V8, all native to Android TM.

● KEEPING DATA TO OURSELVES?
With expansion of machine learning services ( including TENSOR processing unit upgrade and COLAB integration ) there will be unprecedented interest in protecting data from "scrapers".
This interest is in opposition to one of the founding principles of Google, to take the world's knowledge and make it universally accessible. Libraries are taking down books in response to complaints, and even Archive.COM reports losing its legal claim to 500,000 published works, all because the publishers vowed to 'secure' those titles.

For better or worse this panic: over A.I. getting in touch with source data, and training on looks, poems, or speech style IS REAL. Pretty much every 12 weeks new models are rolled out and leaderboards construct new tests / build better red teams.

Google, being a W3C leader: is heading the efforts to 'fix the environment' by requiring guardrails in the form of digital watermarks . Second, encouraging banning of bad actors, angry scrapers going behind people's backs just to gain access into their private data. Apple is also motivated to redeem their brand from security flaws either through monitoring or misinformation prone apps.
We grew up with an /Internet which might have been slow, but for the most part there was a reliability in security /protocols and /antiviruses. However, our children will have to cope with a deluge of generated ads, artificial scripts and comments.

Another Alexa
Hello and welcome to Eye on AI. 
Before ChatGPT could talk, there was Alexa. The decade-old Amazon voice assistant, however, never fully delivered on its potential and was useful for little more than setting a kitchen timer or telling you the weather. 
But now with the full force of generative AI at its disposal, Amazon is looking toward Alexa’s second act. Sometime this year, the company plans to launch an overhauled, “more conversational” version of Alexa, sources told CNBC. Along with new and improved generative AI-powered capabilities, Amazon also plans to introduce a new business model for Alexa. Rather than be included with the company’s Prime subscription, Alexa will require its own monthly subscription. 
While Alexa has previously dominated voice assistant competitors, including Apple’s Siri and Google Assistant, the recent steady release of powerful generative AI-powered chatbots has made clear this space is newly up for grabs. Amazon has already sold more than 500 million Alexa-enabled devices, according to Amazon, which could give the company a leg up. 
At the same time, Amazon hasn’t exactly shown itself to be an AI disrupter—the company is certainly supporting the AI boom via Amazon Web Services and has hitched its wagon to AI startup Anthropic by investing billions of dollars in it, but it hasn’t released any leading AI models that would put it in the same realm as OpenAI, Google, or Meta. 
A generative AI-powered Alexa could be Amazon’s opportunity to finally get in on the AI boom, not to mention finally deliver on the true vision of Alexa. But it faces real challenges: its own lagging position in AI, technical hurdles and runaway compute costs still plaguing the industry, and fierce competition from other tech giants that are all vying to deliver the best AI assistant experience. 
Despite the recent controversy around the Scarlett Johansson-esque voice for ChatGPT, OpenAI put a stake in the ground with its demo of the latest version of its product last week. Google has also rolled out voice support for its Gemini model. And next month at its annual developers conference, Apple is expected to unveil a new generative AI-powered, more conversational Siri. Apple faces many of the same challenges as Amazon in terms of its AI position, but the company is reportedly negotiating with Google to bring its leading Gemini model to the iPhone.
“A lot of us have had this vision for what a powerful assistant can be, but we were held back by the underlying technology not being able to serve that goal,” Google CEO Sundar Pichai said on the Decoder podcast this week. “I think we have a technology that is better able to serve that. That’s why you’re seeing the progress again. I think that’s exciting.”
If these products succeed, they could completely change how we interact with technology, get information, organize our lives, and use products and services. The New York Times reported that Apple executives worry new AI technology could displace its iPhone’s iOS software and threaten its dominance over the smartphone market. With an ecosystem of AI agents, we may no longer need apps or the app store. 
That’s the exact future wearable maker Humane was betting on with its Ai Pin, though it’s clear we’re still quite a ways off. The Ai Pin was designed to speak out loud to people wearing it and handle many of the same tasks as Alexa and Siri, but it failed to deliver. Gadget reviewer Marques Brownlee dubbed it “the worst product I’ve ever reviewed…for now”, and yesterday, Bloomberg reported that Humane is seeking to be acquired after the product’s rocky launch. 
The dream of finally delivering a true AI assistant feels closer than ever before, and at the same time, still very far away. In OpenAI’s demo last week, Sky very much sounded like a real person—both in terms of its voice and how it answered questions (and as always, it’s important to remember that we can only trust a demo so much). But sounding like a real person is only half the battle. These models are still limited by the fact that they’re confidently wrong all the time. As I continue to test ChatGPT, I am floored by how consistently wrong it is. I feel like I can’t trust a word it says.
“I wonder if the intelligence is increasing at the same rate as the facility with language,” Nilay Patel, editor-in-chief of The Verge, said to Pichai during the Decoder conversation. “I kind of don’t see it, to be perfectly honest. I see computers getting much better at language and actually in some cases getting dumber.”
