I was flicking through chapter 55 for my Thistle meta and I'm struck by how completely crazy this move of Kabru's is. He deliberately lets Thistle escape! If he'd let Mithrun kill him - that's it, the disaster of Utaya won't be repeated. (At least, not here).
Kabru-related rough thoughts below the cut.
Like Shuro says after this, if that's what he wanted, leaving things to the elves would be the fastest way. But Kabru won't be satisfied with that! He wants to understand what happened. He doesn't want to leave it in the hands of people who don't see him and those like him as full, adult people. He wants to understand what happened!
He's such a big-picture thinker... I know this is just, literal textual stuff, hardly analysis! But I'm talking it through to myself. At this point, he really isn't sure about Laois, but he is still willing to trust things to him and hope that Laois will listen to him.
I do think Kabru's wrong about Laios at this point. He isn't just thinking about monsters, he does think about people and about bigger picture stuff too - not as much as Kabru, but then, who does! Like, take his succubus chapter dream with the winged lion, it's about people and monsters and the end of hunger. he doesn't just imagine a place where he can be accepted, he's thinking about what people need to live and about communities. But I don't think Kabru's totally wrong either. The little drawing with the stones weighing down Laois... he'd definitely struggle with a lot of those things when running Melini if he didn't have Kabru and Yaad and Marcille! And the soft skills he lacks are important to being a leader. So I understand Kabru's doubts. This is a manga about doubting and misunderstanding others, after all.
But despite being uncertain of Laios and the risk that Thistle getting away poses -
He tackles Mithrun into a pit!!!! (Lawful Neutral my ASS. Sorry. Sorry)
Rather than let the canaries take care of things, even if they were about to succeed, he'd rather take the risk of failure upon himself and find the truth out.
Even though the dungeon is scary and he hates it, and even though he nearly dies (and does die!) and even though he isn't sure about Laois, he's taking the risky bet on truth and agency over the safety and protection of someone who doesn't really understand or respect him
And because he took this risk and sabotaged the canaries, at this point and later, and shared the truth about the dungeon with Laios, and got the elves to cooperate - Laois understood what the demon was. Because Laois understood what the demon was, he was able to beat it. Kabru was right! The knowledge that he was after was important, and ultimately, seeking it out made him instrumental in preventing a tragedy like Utaya from ever happening again, possibly permanently.

well what if the only person sqh doesn't know ANYTHING about is lqg because he was just there to be killed off and so he has to actually try to get to know him and can't use his author knowledge and so they bond and he sees lqg as so much more than just a character whose life was meant to end for a cheap shock and lqg also gets to know him as well and sees sqh in a new light because that coward he grew up distantly with is weirdly able to understand him and actually see him as a person and not just a dumb brute and a new friendship blossoms and
anyways i created the perfect ship/platonic ship name for them it's attack helicopter thank you for coming to my ted talk

The thing with tumblrs hate for John Green is they literally seem to believe it's acceptable that a guy was not only genuinely bullied, but had his books made out to be pornographic and creepy in the nonce way. Not to mention someone LITERALLY THREATENED HIM and included pictures of his house with the threats.
And it's all because people find him cringe. It's all "this is the weirdo website" and "freaks only" until it's just a nerdy enthusiastic middle aged man I suppose. Absolutely disgusting of a guy to to annoy you personally how did you guys even let him live after that???
Like I get it I don't like Neil Gaiman on here at all I want him GONE but also it's crazy that he's basically just doing what John Green did when you guys decided to bully the shit out of him. Now I see people acting like it was a good thing and the same thing should be done to Neil. This site isn't just like "yikes, it's fucked up what we did to John Green, still don't like him tho" it actively relishes in the fact a genuinely lovely philanthropic humanist guy was bullied forreal. Wtf

🌻!!! :D
So! Back home, there were three really cool types of sea urchin that you could find in tide pools and pick up (not actually recommended, they can still stab you and it's probably not good for them ecologically. I did a lot of unrecommended shit as a kid) (there are more than three species there, but I didn't fuck with the others), aaand yeah I went and looked up the exact names so you can look into them more if you want!
Echinometra mathaei - Rock Boring Urchin
These guys come in either green or pink, I'm not kidding, they're little easter egg urchins and were my absolute favorites. They're a little bigger than golf balls and are still spiny, but nonvenomous and not super sharp. They dig out holes in the lava rock and tuck themselves away and it's really cute
Tripneustes gratilla - Collector Urchin
These ones are just a tiny bit bigger than rock boring urchins, and look like pom-poms! They're black/purplish and have really fine spines that are longer in strips down the sides, and really short in wider strips in between. In between the spines are thousands of tiny sucker tentacles that cling to your hand when you hold them, and are also used to pick up rocks and shells, and you can find them just kinda holding onto shit on the reef. Super cute and fluffy looking, pretty sure these are the ones that got famous for wearing tiny hats
Colobocentrotus atratus - Shingle Urchin
These ones don't look much like urchins at all at first glance, they basically have scaly armor plating instead of spines, with a skirt of longer paddle shaped spines along the edges. So they're little purple/black scaly domes with paddley feet and tiny suction cups on the bottom that cling really hard to your hands. Since they're smooth, little gremlin children could actually pet these ones!
