My coworker showed me the cluster fuck of a gem that is Nanowar of Steel's "Norwegian Reggaeton" and I might have fallen off the hinges completely ever since.
Despite the MV not being my cup of tea, I'm laugh-crying even harder because song wise that's exactly how I picture a party of the Strawhat-Heart-Kid alliance, in all it's suggestive and chaotic glory- - - At this point I don't know if I should be concerned about my brain or need someone to edit this into an animation.
This grease fire of a song awoke so many thoughts about some of my favorite ships, as well... (one of the dancers has a hat like Penguin, the makeup and wigs and sunglasses don't make it better in the slightest.)
Some lyrics and my hc's regarding under the cut. Proceed to read at own risk lmao:
Kid to/or (drunk) Law
Yeah, you drilled my heart and my blood is spilling, babe. Like oil from a platform in the North Sea (Blue). You fished me like a whaler in violation of international treaties, babe. Now I'm in an Oslo (Flevance) state of mind, honey. And you burned my soul like the Fantoft (City) church in June 1992, babe
Killer or Penguin or Shachi (maybe Wire as well)
Hypothermia, cuba libre, midnight sun, Sommer fiesta at Ragnarok beach. You were dancing, like a polar killer whale, when your bloodthirsty eyes crossed with mine
Kid pirates ft all
Corazón vikingo de Santo Domingo, la iglesia quemada, la piña colada (Viking heart of Santo Domingo, the burnt church, the piña colada)
Guerrero cubano, bailarín pagano, tomando mojito en el sacrificio (Cuban warrior, pagan dancer, having a mojito during the sacrifice)
Esta vida loca, a mirar la foca, asando un salmón - Norwegian (North blue) Reggaeton (This crazy life, looking at the seal, roasting a salmon - North Blue Raggaeton)
Kid or Killer (with the "softly" part thrown in by a Heart)
Nórdico latino, qué luciferino, mata al enemigo, pero despacito, vamos a bailar en la Playa del Mal (Nordic Latin, so Luciferic, kill the enemy, but softly, let's go dance at the Evil Beach)
Kid
Mueve tu cintura, con mi armadura, Satanás me sube la temperatura, vamos a bailar en maligno ritual (Shake your belt, with my armour, Satan makes my body hot, let's go dance in the evil ritual)
Kid to Law or a desperate and drunk Shachi / Sanji
My Drakkar is ready won't you get on board, while I proudly sail in the depths your fjord. When the storm is raging, and your booty is shaking, hold my pole tight and you ain't get no aching. Your breakfast is ready, isn't it good? It comes with my morning Norwegian (North Bluean) wood. I'm swimming against the stream, I don't care I'm soon getting there where the salmons dare
(↑the dude with the pilot cap getting shooed away during this kills me every time. Like, you tried, Penguin, you tried.)
Ft. an hommage to "In your head" from the soul king himself
Why. Just WHY. This shouldn't fit so well. The deadly yet horny viking vibe for the Kids, the Hispanic party touch from the Strawhats, and the nordic innuendos (polar killer whale, Law's seal spots, the dry humor pick up lines with the burning church including a side jab that might as well be Flevance) for the Hearts???
This will haunt me to my grave and I don't know if it's a blessing or a curse. Probably both.
#melan's brainrot#more like brain melt in this case#heart pirates#kid pirates#straw hat pirates#kidlaw#kilguin#pensha#alliance party gone haywire#metal and reggaeton shouldn't mix so well#one piece headcanons#curse or blessing#I'm blaming my coworker for all of this

To Read List - Narry
This list is purely for myself to keep track of everything I still want to read. Its gonna change as I actually read though them and find more stuff to add.
Find fics I’ve already read here.
Narry
It Feels Like Years by wasp
It's easy to stop thinking, worrying, when he's with Niall, like it's all on instinct. (Community college!AU where basically Niall and Harry fall in love and there's kittens and cuddling for warmth and woo-ing and Liam and Louis are hopeless).
good enough to eat by brokendrums
Niall meets Harry on the set of Masterchef and is instantly attracted to him, even if he is a bit of a dick and far too smug for his own good. He finally cracks his determined exterior and a pretty mind blowing set of blowjobs later they start tentatively seeing each other, only Harry is far too invested in the competition and he just doesn’t have time for distractions like Niall
A MasterChef AU.
does it almost feel like nothing changed at all by estrella30
“You don’t have room to talk,” Louis says, pointing a finger at Harry and narrowing his eyes. “Seeing as how you were seventy five million years late to the meeting today.”
“Well I’m bloody well here now!” Harry shouts. Everyone goes quiet, Zayn even manages to pause whatever Robert Downey Jr. is doing on the telly, and it’s right then, in the middle of the first split second of quiet since Harry arrived that he hears it.
“Wait,” Harry says, cocking his head to the side and listening more closely. “Is that a baby crying?”
OR: Niall gets a baby left w him and Harry moves in to help him take care of her
And Maybe by CharacterDevelopment
“I want to kiss you,” Harry says slowly and nerve-wrackingly honest.
Niall blinks at him. “What?”
“Kissing. I want to kiss you, put our lips together, do the mouth tango, play tonsil hockey—”
Niall interrupts him. “I know what kissing is, Harry.”
“Well, you asked,” Harry says, defensive.
Broken-Hearted Boy by NarryMusings
Niall has watched Harry get his heart broken time after time, again and again. Harry just wants someone to love him. But Niall has always loved him and now that he's finally fed up with Harry not seeing it, Niall tells him.
If We Don't Leave This Town by EvilFriendOfMine
Harry moves to London and begins working at a small bookstore, when a blond-haired, blue-eyed Irishman runs into the store to hide from some no-so-friendly looking men. A relationship sparks but it's anything but easy as Harry has to deal with Niall being a key member of the London Irish Crew, along with his two friends, Louis and Liam. But Niall dreams of getting out one day and taking his friends and Harry with him, but leaving is a lot harder than any of them ever thought it would be.
a little drop for me by littlemissmeggie
Niall was amazed how much had changed in a year, how it didn’t hurt anymore. He’d been drowning in heartache and pain for months and suffocated by the weight of his sorrow.
And then he’d met Harry and been scared and heartbroken again, worried to love and hesitant to be loved. But Harry hadn’t left. He’d showed Niall what unconditional love—romantic unconditional love—felt like, whether out of naive innocence or stubborn determination, Niall wasn’t sure.
or...
If anyone asked Niall how he thought he would meet the love of his life, he wouldn’t have said that he expected to find him lying naked on the beach when he went for a walk at sunrise while on holiday.
future full of yesterdays by fliptomybside
Niall studies astrophysics, Harry studies Niall.
the parting line by from
Harry and Niall get married for a year to save twelve-thousand jobs (and maybe a couple of lives).
feels like home by outwardbound93
Harry shouldn’t feel so much like a little boy tucked into his sister’s side when he spent most of last night twined around Niall in his bed, competing to see who could get the other off more times. But growing up doesn’t seem to work like that. It’s not a switch that gets flicked, it’s like seeing where you want to go and building yourself a bridge to that place. Sometimes where you end up is nothing like you expected, and sometimes it’s like coming home.
out of the woods by countthestars
“Hi,” the boy says, leaning forward and resting his elbows on the counter, body language open in invitation. Niall half expects him to tip his chin up and bare his throat, but instead his smile grows wider, pulling crookedly at his mouth.
Niall's Kitchen by countthestars
Niall and Harry both have youtube cooking channels, and accidentally become rivals. An epistolary fic, of sorts.
must have been the mistletoe by countthestars
“Hey, Harry,” Niall says, voice low and conspiratorial. “Look up.”
“What?” Harry whispers back, because there's a lot to look at up there, blinking lights and boughs of garland and... “is that mistletoe?”
“'Fraid so,” Niall confirms. His lips twitch like he's fighting a smile, but he keeps a straight face as he taps his finger against his mouth. “It's bad luck not to kiss someone underneath mistletoe.”
hold me closer tiny dancer by countthestars
Dancing isn't really Harry's strong suit. Niall doesn't really care.
The Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows by KelliDiane
Unlike other kids of successful, wealthy parents Harry isn't skating by on good looks. Nor is he fifty piña coladas deep in Hawaii. Instead he spends his time learning, whether it's by reading a mountain of texts or hands on at his father's lab. There's an unspoken understanding between his father and himself that he'll take control of the company when his father no longer can. Harry would rather be well versed when he does, science really does interest him. If it interests him because it's genuinely cool or if it interests him because his father pays some kind of attention to him, well.
or
Another superpowers fic that nobody asked for.
remember that time on the bus by estrella30
“Yeah, sure,” Harry says. He smiles and shrugs happily. “I’m good with that.” He gestures to himself on the couch. “You want to like—like now?”
“No! Not now, I mean. One day. In the future.” Niall chews on his thumb and shrugs. “When we’re bored or something.”
Harry snorts a quiet laugh. Only Niall would think shagging a mate would be a good way to kill some time when bored on the bus.
Well. All right. It’s not as if the thought’s never crossed Harry’s mind.
or: harry and niall start shagging
stay, stay, stay. . . (stay.) by badjujuboo (miztrezboo)
Niall keeps a gun by the bed now.
Harry doesn't think Niall knows he knows.
OR an au of the on the streets/gangland type description, drug and alcohol use, violence offscreen, past rough sex (barely mentioned), romantic sex (because we need both sides), somewhat discussed unprotected sex, guns and being shot at and shot, and minor character death (because its a gangland fic and i'm sorry?)
show me by zouee
"i was thinking..." harry begins, scratching the back of his neck hesitantly. he feels niall's eyes on him and his cheeks start to feel hot. "what if we made a sex tape?"
the one where niall and harry are roommates who are close to broke, and are desperate to do anything for money.
high on a pleasure wheel by brokendrums
Niall wakes up the morning after the Billboard Awards married to Harry. Too hungover to face the media storm, he takes up Harry’s offer to drive him home to LA.
the taste was sweeter by brokendrums
On his 18th birthday, Niall travels into the future and ends up meeting his 24 year old self.
only talk about a bruise by brokendrums
With the eclipse fast approaching, the pack is thrown into crisis. New to it all, Harry tries to find his place.
see me in a new light by brokendrums
Niall joins the production team for Planet Earth II and Harry has an interesting proposition.
my remedy for yesterday by brokendrums
It’s been three years since One Direction finally parted ways. Three long years where Niall’s stayed away from home on a never ending holiday. Three years since he’s seen Harry in the flesh and not just splashed across the tabloids or overplayed on the radio.
Niall’s just docked his boat in Ibiza, ready to soak up the sun, when an unexpected accident brings Harry into his life again. And while Niall recuperates on Harry’s patch of sandy white beach old feelings start to emerge, not all of them pleasant.
If we dream forever, whatever happens next by brokendrums
Niall meets Harry on the train and can't stop thinking about him. Then one evening when they get off the train, Harry invites him back to his.
all of the places i ain't ever been by theamazingpeterparker
Harry takes his dinner back to his bedroom, determined to chip away at his book that he came here to write. He’s not sure what it really is yet but he knows he wants it to be in the countryside, maybe a love story without the distractions of a city or a corporate job or a huge population to get in the way.
Or, Harry rents a room on a farm in exchange for working as a farmhand.
something softer than us by theamazingpeterparker
He almost told him then, leaning forward like the thought hit him with enough force that he'd say it out loud. He had bit his tongue, let Niall carry on his explanation against the backdrop of a setting sun across the river from the ballpark. Harry supposes then that he'd loved Niall for a long time now, anyway.
Niall's cat's name is Lunchbox, Louis has definitely been in love, Zayn won't shut up about the Antonine Plague, and Harry doesn't know how to tell Niall that he's in love with him.
dear, i'm always running towards you by goreallegore
He blocks it all out, the cheers, the profanities of overzealous fans from the opposing team, and focuses on one thing, a soft gravelly voice, “Good things take time.”
Or; Niall plays for FC Barcelona, and Harry's a photographer.
a better beginning by goreallegore
Zayn and Liam are attached to the hip, Louis is always putting his foot where it's not needed, and Niall and Harry are ever so quietly in love.
a rising tide like an hour glass by goreallegore
Harry climbs over him, his legs slotting on either sides of Niall, his body flush against Niall’s. He nibbles on Niall’s lowerlip, then licks the seam of his mouth and causes him to elicit a soft - needy - moan. No feelings in the Glade, Niall remembers. Or, he doesn’t. It’s all kind of a haze to be honest.
Or; Niall and Harry are runners.
cook up a recipe for my beating heart by goreallegore
“So, what say wanna live with me? I’ll cook Sunday breakfasts,” Niall says.
“And I’ll make your favorite pastry,” Harry replies.
“Tarte Tartin.” Cause that’s what their love is. A bit of sour and sweet.
Or; Niall and Harry cook.
can't believe I captured your heart by goreallegore
Niall shrugs, “thanks, couldn’t bear living on campus after freshmen year. So moved in here my second year with me mate.”
Harry nods, pausing to repeat Niall’s words in his head, “wait, you’re not a second year?” Please don’t say senior. Please.
“Third year.” Thank god.
Harry sighs in relief, “so ready for the movie?”
Or; Niall likes movies. And Harry is just trying to figure himself out.
baby, we're like a time bomb by goreallegore
“You know that frown thing doesn’t suit you. Look like a lost pug or summat,” he chuckles, his grip tight on the steering wheel.
“I like pugs,” Harry answers simply, and Niall has to turn and look at the boy next to him and it really shouldn’t surprise him because he has known this since day one, but Harry is beautiful. Even the frown that has found a new home on his always smiling face looks pretty – could call it painfully beautiful.
“I do too, though, I like happy ones. Don’t you?” he prods, and that does it as he turns, again, to find a smiling Harry, “there it is. I knew there was something missing.”
Harry ducks his head, avoiding Niall’s gaze, “you’re doing it again.”
“Doing what?”
“Flirting.”
Or; there are timers, but Harry and Niall are too in love to care.
the whole world is sleeping, but my world is you by goreallegore
“Say if I were to leave for forever, would it be okay?”
Niall reaches for Harry’s hand, intertwining their fingers as if the gaps between their fingers were made to be filled by each other, “Only if it makes you happy. ‘Sides, I’d probably follow you to ends of time. Can’t afford losing me best mate.” A slight blush decorates Niall’s cheeks and the dim lighting of the room makes the boy look – ethereal, Harry thinks. Harry is completely endeared by the sight before him.
Or; Harry lives his dreams and Niall helps him save them.
the name forever on my lips is yours by goreallegore
“What did you forget?” his voice was small, Niall was afraid that Harry might’ve not heard him but the look on his face said the opposite.
“I never clearly told you how I feel about you,” Harry stopped to pull out a journal from his back pocket, “I wrote about it you see.” He was holding a battered moleskin that seemed like it had ink all over it. Niall had seen it before but never dared to ask what it was; but now that Harry stood in front of him shyly flipping through the pages, he realized what it was. Niall felt like he was running short on air.
Or; Niall is a modern day Prince and Harry is no damsel in distress.
First Person by Gorgeous Nerd (gorgeousnerd)
Harry doesn't know why Niall wants to see him when he loses a year of memories. But Harry can't go anywhere else.
Follow You Through The Dark by disarm_d
Harry discovers that Niall is a vampire and has some valid concerns.
the mad ones (pool party remix) by irishmizzy, miss_bennie
Harry buys a car in NYC = OT5 road trip to LA. 24-hour diners, shit hotels, Polaroids, golf, line dancing, and too many people in the backseat: this is what dreams are made of.
Christmas Wishes by narrywings
Harry's hoping to go home for a quiet Christmas - but everything gets derailed when Niall calls unexpectedly.
It's Christmas. That Means We Have To Hold Hands. by holyzarrialltrinity
"As the day went on, Niall started worrying less about the way he felt. All he knew is that being around Harry made him feel happy. And being with him in the best city on Earth was even better. It made him forget for a moment about all the stuff back home. He just wanted to be with Harry for however long they had. There was some unspoken romance happening between the two of them and they both could tell. But instead of words, they just held hands really tight."
Niall hates his family. Harry barely has one. But when you spend time with someone new in the greatest city in the world, there's always room for a little change in your life.
love actually is all around by storuns
A small smile appears on Harry’s face and he scoots closer to Niall, resting his head on his shoulder. Niall wraps his arm around him and moves his hand up to rub his shoulder, earning a couple of coos from Louis and Liam across the table. Harry laughs and throws French fries at both of them. He looks up at Niall and grins as he watches him throw his head back in laughter. For some reason, a warm feeling overwhelms his chest and he feels like hugging Niall tightly and kissing all over his face. But, of course, he has control and all he can do is imagine it in his head.
Or the one where Harry and Niall go to Mullingar for Christmas, and stuff happens.
Time Has Brought Your Heart to Me by fakeheaux
Harry meets Niall, and feels a connection, so he gets to know him just a bit more.
Or the one where Harry and Niall are soulmates.
hear this heartbeat breaking through by acastle
He feels another shock of warmth, much more intense, much more overwhelming, as he looks at him. Watches Bailey cling on to this person tightly, laughing as he’s lifted off the ground. He doesn’t know how to describe it, but he’s sure. Very sure, that it is a positive feeling. He doesn’t know how to react to it, really.
(In which Harry is an amateur boxer, raising his son on his own after the hardest few months of his life, then he meets the piano teacher with a beautiful heart.)
a rush inside i can't control by dramaturgicallycorrect
all seems to stay for as long as he can -- that what it feels like to Harry, like Niall’s only ever there until he can’t be there anymore, until something’s tugging him away and he has to follow. Every day he seems to be able to stay longer, sometimes up to hours at a time before he’s tugged away. Every time he goes, Niall leaves his glasses on the kitchen table like a promise.
[Or Harry’s rented a cabin by the woods in Mullingar to write his new album and he doesn’t know that both of his muses are Niall.]
the world still turns by dramaturgicallycorrect
It’s not like he’s not seen any of them over the last eighteen months -- he has – but certainly not all once, not like the way it used to be. Not even the 2015 Way It Used To Be, because even before Zayn left they’d all pretty much tried to do their own thing. Like Just Starting Out Way It Used To Be when they were too scared to let go of each other because they didn’t have anybody else.
Niall had always had his family and the crew and all, but most days it felt like it was just the five of them and nobody else. And the world was laid out in front of them for the taking and they didn’t know who they were or who they wanted to be. Some days Niall still doesn’t know who he is or who he wants to be and he thinks that’s just as comforting as it is terrifying.
You’re not supposed to have it all figured out by age 23. He thinks people forget that sometimes.
[Or Niall organizes a lads’ holiday to see if they still fit.]
let's start right now by dramaturgicallycorrect
He turns to Harry. “Do you mind, like. Can I take a picture of your driver’s license?”
“Yeah,” Harry says easily, fishing his wallet out and presenting him with a California license to match his California plates. He has got an LA address, Niall notes as he snaps a picture. He’s got longer hair in this picture, waving down to brush his shoulders, a far sight from the short crop he's got now. It looks just as good on him, he notes almost subconsciously.
He texts the picture to Louis as Harry puts the license away, give this to the police if I go missing ..
What have you done Neil?? comes Louis’ answer quickly, but Niall ignores it, looks up to find Harry looking back at him.
“It’ll be fun.”
“Promise?”
Harry tilts his head. “I never make promises. You’ll just have to trust me.”
[Or Harry's a professional cross country road trip driver, and Niall is his latest fare.]
call this what you like by dramaturgicallycorrect
“Who was that?” Laura asks, something sly on her face that Niall quite wishes she’d wipe off.
It twists Niall’s stomach anyway, to say, “My mate Harry,” when the truth of it is mates aren’t supposed to catch your breath in your chest talking to them.
He doesn’t know what to do with the feeling, so he presses it away, deep into that box of other nasty feelings he doesn’t want, the ones that haunt him, the you’re never going to get a gig, the you’re going to end up alone.
The thing is, it doesn’t feel like a nasty feeling. It feels like something he should explore instead of hide, because it feels good. But he’s felt it, maybe just once or twice before, and nothing good’s ever come of it. Not a single person’s understood. So Niall locks it up tight and swears he’ll lose the key.
[Or Harry’s looking for love in all the wrong places, and Niall’s not meant to be looking at all.]
only fools rush in by darlingjustdont
niall holds up his hand to show off the band, unthinkingly pushed onto his fourth finger. harry stares at it. “i woke up with it on my thumb.” “did i get one?” says harry, now staring at his own hands. there’s a simple silver ring on his left hand. “oh fuck, i did. holy fuck, niall. i think we got married.”

There’s a moment of silence where Harry considers just passing out right there, head hanging off the bed, because the alcohol’s finally catching up to him in the most unpleasant way. “When we’re thirty?”
“When we’re thirty.” Harry repeats. His eyelids are slowly drooping closed, fingers going slack around the beer he’s clutching. He’s just slipping over the edge when there’s the rustle of material and he squints open one eye to look at Niall.
"We’ve done stupider things.” Niall shrugs.

And that’s another problem. Harry is way too aware of Niall right now to get entirely comfortable. He’s just…
Niall is just there – right there – and Harry is having all sorts of ridiculous thoughts about him.
days grow on colorful trees by criminiallar
He’ll miss nights when they scroll through their phones side by side and Skype with their friends from opposite sides of the room, and he’ll miss leaning over whenever the mood strikes him, nudging his nose against Harry’s jogging bottoms that he’s taken to wearing around the house and looking up with a hopeful grin and Harry leaning back on his elbows with a flourish of his hands before he tips over, smiling at the ceiling with a, “Have at it, then.”

Niall is an aspiring evil genius (who isn't very evil at all). Harry is his pretty assistant. Liam is the visiting friend and Louis and Zayn are meddlesome superheroes.

Harry leans against the shelf and opens his mouth to say something witty and probably super sexy when Niall interrupts him with a snort. “Do those kinds of lines get you anywhere?”
“Most of the time,” Harry shrugs, and it’s true, because he has quite a bit of charm, and it tends to work in his favor, despite his cheesy lines. “I’m charming.”
“I suppose you are,” Niall laughs, and Harry can’t help the smile that spreads across his face.
you don't need me anymore by outwardbound93
Rain riddles the sea like bullets and the dark storm clouds hang just above ceiling height, but Niall doesn’t have the panicky crushed feeling he sometimes gets. The little house feels cozy with his baby asleep in the next room and Harry’s lip jutting out in a pout.
Or, Niall becomes a dad.

Funny, Niall thinks, that for all their success ordinary terrible things happen to them just like anybody else. Girlfriends get tired of the fans or get panicked about too much commitment, and bandmates slip going into the pool and lose five years’ worth of memories.

Niall never thought he’d find his way back home. But then, the wind works in mysterious ways: a stranger at the door, an impossible escape. A whisper that changes everything, forever, again.

In retrospect, becoming part of the world’s biggest boy band might not have been the smartest move for someone with Niall’s 'special condition,' what with the whole never-aging thing and the insatiable thirst for human blood.

Senior year was supposed to be the best ever – that is, until Louis goes through a breakup over the summer and Zayn starts acting weird. “At home, we sleep on the,” he points at the ceiling. “The top, so we don’t float away.”
Niall laughs. “The ceiling, you mean?” He traces the line of Harry’s dimple. “I figured you slept inside a castle, like in the pictures of what Atlantis looked like.”
“I doubt that’s accurate,” Harry says. He palms Niall’s thigh, running his hand down to his knee, where he pauses to feel out the unfamiliar bones with his fingertips. “Otters sleep holding hands so they won’t drift apart, did you know that?”
“What, are you an otter?” Niall asks.
“No, but it might not be too bad,” Harry says. He lays his head to rest on Niall’s chest, over his heart. His fingers tangle with Niall’s in the sheets, his skin tanned and smooth, Niall’s pale and scarred.
"Eh,” Niall says. “It’s not too bad, I guess.”

Harry glances down at the floor, then up at Niall, lip curling up in a bashful smirk. Niall wants terribly to kiss him. The opportunity is right there in front of him, and it's the worst idea in the entire world.
It would reach the press. He'd be in the news - CEO and Founder of BeepFodder Niall Horan Sexually Manipulates Underlings. His mum has an alert for him on her computer and she'd see it and have a heart attack. They'd lose sponsors. Even if they didn't publish the footage, it'd still exist. It all still would have happened. Harry would know Niall likes him. The thought of the most vulnerable spots in his heart being captured on film and shown to millions of people makes Niall sick. Going through with this in a legitimate way would ruin his life no matter what.

Niall shakes his head like he always does when people are asking him questions. It’s what he does, giving them non-verbal answers. Southwest Roadtrip - Episode 1: Viva las Vegas
When it comes to discovering the US, Johnny Cash kept it simple and straight to the point:
“I've been everywhere, man. Crossed the desert's bare, man. I've breathed the mountain air, man. Of travel I've had my share, man. I've been everywhere.“
And what a journey it was! Who knew a failed attempt to fly to Hawaii would result in such a fun adventure? We packed our stuff and jumped on a plane, destination Southwest of America. Starting by Vegas, passing through Arizona, stopping by Utah, resting in Colorado. Only my friend Belu would be as kamikaze to propose such thing and found in me such a blind partner-in-crime. It was September 4th, and we were rushing in a taxi from Hoboken to Newark to board our first flight during a global sanitary emergency, looking like Darth Vader’s close cousins with our masks and face shields.
After an approximately 6-hour flight, we landed in the middle of literally nowhere. We were able to see the pyramid and some other iconic architecture which I currently do not remember because it was about only for 5 seconds before landing. On arrival, on a mostly empty airport, we were surprised by the amount of slot machines that were there, welcoming everyone to place their bets. For sure, ours was to have fun and contrary to common belief, the house didn't win this one: we had a blast!
Followed by a surprise “SIN CITY, WOOO HOOO!” shout from someone who obviously has been living inside a thermos for the last past months, we cracked up and went to fetch a car. This very nice gentleman took us to the Bellagio (yeap, we went full on cliche mode, with what was originally a non-existent promo) while DJ Dani blasted her best records to kick off this adventure with the right feet: Viva Las Vegas by Elvis Presley and Just a Gigolo by Louis Prima Success.
DAY 1:
First things first: check in and adventure. Hotel, amenities and surroundings. Vegas spins around two main areas: the famous Strip, 6.8kms of the brightest place on earth seen from outer space full of hotels, restaurants, shops and of course, casinos. Pretty much Disneyworld for adults. The Bellagio is the iconic hotel which hosts some of the greatest restaurants and also the famous dancing fountains. Also, is one that is pretty centrally located, in between Caesars Palace (Roman Empire themed), The Cosmopolitan (which imitates boheme life from France) Aria and Park MGM Las Vegas (New York City represent!), Excalibur (Middle Ages) Luxor (Cleopatra’s Egypt) and The Venetian (of course, Venice). Everything is within walking distance but beware of the heat: a normal day in the desert is around 42C (107F), if not more, with a melting down thermal sensation of 1000 in any scale. This is why is also a city that is enjoyable during night time. So, do not feel bad about sleeping in a bit: you can always chill by the pool in the morning, have a little something for lunch and sleep (or remove the hangover) during the afternoon when the sun is unbearable. OR, the casino is always open so that could be an option. We chose to walk around a bit (big mistake) but luckily once you enter to the casinos, they are all connected with escalators, shade and AC, so we were mesmerized by this grown up themed park, where is so easy to lose track of time.
After an Italian lunch on a french bistro in a corner of Paris (? yes.. I know..) we went back and rest by the pool. Once the sun was already getting ready to bet some chips at night, we did too: we changed into our most shinny and glamorous outfit and won exactly 27 dollars! We checked out Venice, and some of the night shows that were happening on the streets (like naked promoters, the massive PM lines, and the crazy long-ass “juice” towers flowing around the more energetic covid-prone crowds) right before we headed up to Yellowtail, the Japanese and Michelin Starred restaurant at the Bellagio. We had their famous tuna pizza (it sounds terrible but it is more of a tostada or sashimi-style like) and got disappointed that they run out of the short ribs, but instead had some amazing sushi rolls and some tempura bites. When we found out about the beautiful, sigh-seeing windows that displayed all the fountain show we left our high-end attires aside and run to the windows, interrupting some other people’s dinner while leaving the waiters behind. We decided to go for dessert somewhere else and went to the piano bar located at the reception for a delicious espresso and a chocolate diamond cake. We did some neon-gazing and loved the fountain show to the beat of Believe by Cher, while being overwhelmed by a surreal feeling of actually being there, having so much fun and appreciating our friendship (and of course, avoided a high/drunk fellow who tried to take our pics and phone with them - she didnt know we were from New York and from Rio de la Plata, so the scam was on her!)
DAY 2
Repeat. (and pretty much that’s all we did). We kicked it off with a fake breakfast by the pool, and some piñas coladas in between facemasks. We also had a light lunch by the pool (a greek salad with some much needed water) and then, around 6:15 we took a cab to the Neon Museum - yeap, for those who think there is only light fun in Vegas, nope, think again, there are worthy museums, too! ( I even made a joke here! damn I’m inspired!). The Neon Museum is a scrap dealer cemetery, where all the old and somehow “broken” -even thou most of them have been repaired and are currently working!- neon signs from Old time Vegas rest. It is very fun to see old hotels, random letters, icons and logos being laid there, creating a wonderful mess in the middle of, again, you guess right, the desert. It was very fun and beautiful to be honest.
Another short taxi drive later (I was too naif thinking we could walk in short heels under the killer heat more than a block!) we drove thru what is known as “Old Vegas” or “Downtown Vegas”. This used to be the place where the magic happened before the creation of the Strip, but nowadays it only hosts what lingers of once a glamorous and kitschy past. The center of this action can be found throughout Freemont Street, a pedestrian long avenue that gathers classic neon signs, all-time Vegas characters (we still missed out on Elvis, so watch out impersonator, we will be back just for you!), stripers, street sellers, all you can eat venues, dodgy bars, and more and more neons. According to Las Vegas Tourism Board>> “Fun people, crazy people, partying, gambling, drinking, street performers, free music and light shows, zip lining and just having a good time... that's what you expect at Freemont.”
We had some pizza, talked to this Montana guy who for a second thought he was able to have a threesome with us on his dirty van, were voluntary abused by these hot, ripped stripers who made us laugh with their pick up line: “You can leave your face mask here, right by your underwear too, please.” The guys were a “sample” - since the show is canceled due to the pandemic- of Chippendales, something a fine woman needs to experience once in their lifetime. Belu felt in love with her boy, but given the current times and protocols, this love couldn't prosper as we all wished it had. No worries amiga, next time!
But the most striking part of this decadent place was witnessing this surreal restaurant called Heart Attack Grill, where people who weight more than 350lbs (almost 160kgs) eat for free. The biggest burger consist on 8 patties, and as an FYI, only the 4 patty burger is marked on the Guinness World Records Book as the “Quadruple Bypass Burger” with almost 10.000 calories, all the beverages consists on massive soft drinks, milkshakes, beers and wine, (full bottles, of course, served from an IV drip bag) and it is not allowed to share food. The place is cash only, you gotta weight yourself before entering, each patty is made of half pound each, everybody must wear hospital gowns and if you dare not to finish your meal, you get three spanks by the horny yet not so sexy waitress dressed as nurses. As a nice little detail, on the biggest burger you can pump it up with 40 slices of bacon by only $7.99 more! And, to wrap up this majestic hospital parlor, I recently researched that the legal owner of Heart Attack Grill is hilarious – Diet Center LLC. The founder is Jon Basso, who strives to provide “nutritional pornography” in his food. For a better comprehension (for a lack of a better word) of this place, you can check out this recap of Showtime’s series: Deadly Sins.
So, we were mesmerized, we were educated, we bet, we ate, we drunk and we touched some sweaty strippers, so there was only one thing left to do: crush a weeding. So there we went. There were multiple chapels around the area, but I dont know whether it was the time (it was around, 9, 9 and coins) so it may have been a little bit too late or due to COVID, but no weddings were in place. We finally arrived to the Little White Chapel, the original, unique one that has the Elvis sign, the drive-thru and the proud sign that states how Michael Jordan and Joan Collins got married there. We were so bummed to found only a very young, very dull couple getting married (she was wearing black, hence, that is all you need to know) and there was not a very jolly, merry spirit. Still, we managed to hang out with the best men and got a picture of two to remember this fail attempt to crush this very much lame wedding. Up we went to the Bellagio, checking out what was missing from Sin City: the Wynn Hotel, Route 515, 51 and the Famous Welcome to Las Vegas Sign.
We wrapped this unique experience witnessing an amazing, full moon in the middle of the desert, with a massive and delicious full on breakfast at Sadelle’s, a little piece of home in our far-away-from home hotel. Till next time, Vegas! You were great fun!

Rumbling volcano shuts down Philippine capital
An eruption of Taal Volcano in the Philippines began on January 12, 2020. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) subsequently issued an Alert Level 4, indicating that "a hazardous explosive eruption is possible within hours to days." It was a phreatic eruption from the main crater that spewed ashes to Calabarzon, Metro Manila, and some parts of Central Luzon, resulting in the suspension of classes, work schedules and flights.
The volcano erupted on the afternoon of January 12, 2020, 43 years after its previous eruption in 1977. According to PHIVOLCS director Renato Solidum, a phreatic eruption was first recorded at around 1 pm Philippine Standard Time (UTC+8). Loud rumbling sounds were also felt and heard from the volcano island. By 2:30 pm, PHIVOLCS raised the alert status to Alert Level 2 after a stronger explosion was recorded around 2 pm.[8] It was followed by an even stronger explosion by around 3 pm that spew an ash column measuring 100 meters, prompting PHIVOLCS to upgrade the alert status to Alert Level 3 by 4 pm. Furthermore, Solidum also confirmed that there was a magmatic intrusion that is likely the cause of the volcano’s phreatic eruptions on Sunday morning and afternoon. PHIVOLCS ordered an evacuation in the towns of Balete, San Nicolas and Talisay in Batangas and other towns within the shores of Taal Lake. By 7:30 pm, PHIVOLCS upgraded the alert status to Alert Level 4 after volcanic activities intensified as "continuous eruption generated a tall 10 to 15 kilometres (6.2 to 9.3 mi) steam-laden tephra column with frequent volcanic lightning that rained wet ashfall on the general north as far as Quezon City and Caloocan." Ashfall from the volcano were also experienced in Cavite and Laguna and also reached as far as Metro Manila and Clark International Airport.
On Monday, January 13, PHIVOLCS reported that the volcano emitted a Strombolian type of eruption between 2:48 am to 4:28 am.[17] A lava fountain was recorded at 3:20 am. The Department of Environment and Natural Resources presented a study that the air quality index of cities in Metro Manila had worsened; Mandaluyong had the highest amount of inhalable coarse particles (PM10) with 118, followed by Las Piñas (108) and Taguig (104), all of which were "considered unhealthy for sensitive groups" with respiratory issues. Meanwhile, the cities with the least amount of PM10 were San Juan and Malabon, both with "good" amounts of 22 and 28 respectively. These were followed by "moderate/fair" amounts of PM10 in Pasig (55), Parañaque (62) and Makati (63).
As of Tuesday, January 14, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) have reported a total of 286 volcano tectonic earthquakes in the Taal area since the eruption.[20] The strongest were a series of magnitude 4.1 Mw earthquakes originating 6 kilometres (3.7 mi) northwest of Agoncillo, Batangas, which were recorded at least thrice: at 11:56 pm on January 12, 3:11 am on January 13, and 6:35 am later that day. As a result, an Intensity III ("weak") on the PHIVOLCS Earthquake Intensity Scale was felt in Tagaytay and an Intensity II ("slightly felt") was felt in Malabon. Between 11:39 pm on January 13 and 5:50 am the following day, PHIVOLCS reported a total of 44 earthquakes in the towns of Calaca, Laurel, Lemery, Mataasnakahoy, San Luis, Taal and Talisay in Batangas, and in Alfonso, Cavite; among the strongest were a magnitude 3.6 Mw in Taal, which was felt at an Intensity III in Tagaytay, and a magnitude 3.9 Mw originating 7 kilometres (4.3 mi) northeast of Talisay at 2:05 am, measuring an Intensity IV ("moderately strong") in Tagaytay and Intensity II in Malabon and Pasay. As a result of these constant earthquakes, numerous fissures or cracks began to appear across different barangays in the Batangas towns of Agoncillo, Lemery, San Nicolas and Talisay, towns within the 14-kilometer radius of Taal. A fissure also transected the road connecting Agoncillo to Laurel.

week 2:
a) agua de limón, piña, aloe vera, y chia - the most refreshing beverage I’ve ever consumed on the roof of a mall (not pictured: mediocre mall sushi) we ate lunch in this Eataly-esque food court on an outdoor patio feat. big screen playing Beyoncé live performances & late 2000s pop. picture composition inspired by @brownswaggy
b) at a sports bar watching a fútbol game between Mexico and Germany (Mexico lost)
c) we spent Friday helping with a chronic kidney disease early detection campaign at Casa de las Hermanas del Buen Samaritano (a clinic in Malincalco - a town about 2 hours out of DF - staffed by nuns and 6th year medical students). later, we spent some time exploring the city square and one of its many chapels (the breathaking Capilla San Pedro, pictured here). the chapel, like the city itself, is magnificent but shows signs of wear. Malinalco is one of the pueblos mágicos, as designated by Mexico’s Tourism Secretary; according to legend, it was the home of the goddess Malinalxóchil, sister of Huitzilopotchli (the Aztec God), who had abandoned her because he believed she was practicing witchcraft. the town is circumscribed by endless mountains, peaks covered by clouds due to the morning rain. even as I drifted in and out of consciousness on our bus ride, I could see that the town was quite far out from the city; we walked by a long line of men in cowboy hats waiting by an enormous truck, presumably carrying a regular delivery of goods produced in distant parts of Mexico. the campaign, which aims at raising awareness of CKD risk, encourages follow up for at-risk patients, but the relative isolation of Malinalco leads me to believe that our impact may not be as significant as we had been told.
d) after a delicious, near-tranquilizing dinner at an Argentinian restaurant in La Condesa, we migrated to El Péndulo, a combo coffee shop/book store/record shop that played exclusively sad dad rock. needless to say, I was revitalized (by the ambiance, by the discover of my literature professor’s book on the bestseller shelf (lol), and by a really, really good cappuccino).
e) in a weird turn of events, we ended up at the ice bar - which was a typical bar with a separate room made of ice. like an adult homecoming dance, it was equal parts gimmicky and fun! thoroughly enjoyed traipsing around in my 4″ catwoman boots and donning the puffy ice room jackets. did not enjoy that my song requests were turned down 4 separate times :c
f) one of many beautiful houses overflowing with flowers on our walk to Coyoacán square this Sunday! the block was populated by an inordinate amount of tourist trap artisanal markets, themed elote stands, an art fair, and a spontaneous dance floor filled with older couples

Vamos a la Playa
Hello again,
It’s been a while since we’ve last seen each other. As an update on my life, I’m a senior now, and after returning from Turkey I’ve spent the past calendar year basically doing nothing. I’ve been to a few new cities in the U.S., most notably Chicago, which I’ve been considering posting about solely to talk about the food. I’ll keep you posted as to what I decide to do.
Anyways, this time I decided to brush the dust off this blog to talk about my recent spring break trip to Puerto Rico. I apologize in advance for the low-quality photos, in a lapse of judgement I forgot to pack my camera... :(
So- to the fun stuff. Puerto Rico. Otherwise known as one of the random islands in the Caribbean that the U.S. for some unclear reason still has ownership over (we got Puerto Rico, Guam, the Philippines, and temporarily Cuba as part of the end of the Spanish-American War). If I were to summarize Puerto Rico in a few words, it would probably be: fun, and lawless. I can’t really think of anything else that would capture it as well as those two words. Popular would work too, since there were a lot of other tourists while we were there. It was like any Caribbean island I would have expected: an endless bounty of rum, fresh fruits, and sunshine, all topped with a Latin flair and failing economy (thanks for the tip, Disney). The people were all so kind and so interesting too! Basically all of our Uber drivers engaged us in a fully-fledged conversation and usually gave us recommendations on places to go/eat. The food was exactly what I would have wanted-- dishes emphasized seafood, plantains (served in any method possible), Spanish spices, and I never found myself in a shortage of avocados. What more could a girl ask for?
Needless to say, I’d give Puerto Rico a 9/10. I’m deducting a point off because this week cost me an arm and a leg. Restaurants were priced the same as places in Manhattan or LA, (understanding that I ate seafood practically every day) which was a rude awakening considering people had told me that Puerto Rico was relatively cheap. However, I don’t regret a single dollar I spent, I had a blast and that’s what matters... right?
To walk you through my experiences, I’ll go through the pictures first. We left Syracuse Thursday night for NYC, crashed at friends’ for the night to catch our 11 am flight Friday morning to San Juan. Shoutout to Kai for letting me sleep on his futon, again (you’re the best, and you always will be).
Funny enough, the day we left the entire Northeast was getting slammed with a snow storm-- I think there were a couple of inches in NYC. Man, never had I ever been more glad to be waiting in an airport, jetting off somewhere (literally anywhere) else. Cackling to ourselves at the blizzard outside, the squad and I boarded and took off on time for San Juan. Unscathed by the winter storm, we landed in San Juan around 4 pm that day-- I love when you fly somewhere and the second you walk out of the airport, your body is shocked by the temperature difference. Ahh, the sweet sensation of perspiration.
We quickly went back to our Airbnb, changed, and went out to dinner. Now maybe it was the travel- or the sangria- but this was one of the more euphoric meals I’ve ever had. We went to Casita Miramar, and all ordered the aguacates rellenos (stuffed avocados).
Yes, it was just as good as it looks. Better, actually. *drools* The shrimp was charred perfectly, served with a creamy red pepper sauce that was sweet, garlicky, buttery and just classically good. On the side were tostones (smashed fried plantains). UggGGHHHhh. We then split a guava panetela (divine buttery almost amaretto-y cake layered with guava jam) and were served complimentary shots at the end- called “chichaitos,” they’re traditional Puerto Rican rum shots with anise liquer and a few coffee beans added (usually three for money, love, and health). After slamming those down and being painfully reminded of my relationship with rakı, we went home to catch some z’s for the rest of our trip.
The next day, we rented a car to go to a beach about an hour out of San Juan. My roommate has a friend from San Juan, so we shaped a lot of our itinerary around his suggestions (turns out, the locals know what they’re talking about). So, we ventured out to Manatí, and visited the playa la Poza de las Mujeres.
The water was crystal blue, warm, and the beach wasn’t crowded at all. I had to stop for two iguanas to cross the road though, which was weird.
We then went out to dinner at a little place called Mere Pescao (where I got mahi mahi and plantain skewers) and then went out to drinks at La Coctelera on Calle Loiza. There, I got a rosemary and beet Tom Collins, which was OK but not my favorite. We also went to a Basque bakery and I got a guava pastelito (divine).
The next day, we went to probably the worst brunch we’ve ever had (DON’T go to Caficultura) in Old San Juan. The food was subpar and the service was horrendous. I would say the one saving grace was being able to try a Cortadito, a local favorite similar to a macchiato (the real kind, not the over-dressed crap you get at Starbucks). However, if you do want the real deal-artisanal Puerto Rican coffee, DO go to Cuatro Sombras. They roast all their beans in house (which are locally harvested from Yauco) and even offer special cupping demonstrations and tastings. We then walked around Old San Juan, which is absolutely adorable and reminiscent of Macau (or any other old Portuguese/Spanish town with cobblestone streets, brightly colored buildings and ornate white reliefs).
This is one of the castles in Old San Juan- nicknamed “El Morro” it served as a fort dating back to the 16th century and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The next day, we were on the road by 7 am to go horseback riding on the beach in Isabela (2.5 hours west of San Juan). We went with a small company called Tropical Trail Rides, which was a 2 hour trail ride on 3 different beaches/through coastal brush. Coincidentally, our horses all embodied us in their own ways; Taína was the dark, ethnically ambiguous one (me), Cristal was the crotchety standoffish one (Audrey), Canela didn’t give a flying f*** about the trail ride or her job (Bella), and Whiskey was fully erect the entire time (Lily). Classic.
The four horsemen of the apocalypse
It was a really nice ride, and honestly I could’ve done it all day. We even got to walk over old U.S. missile launchpads in the forest dating back to the Cuban Missile Crisis! Love me some history.
After getting back from horses, we got smoothies and lunch/dinner at La Casita Blanca, a small local place in Santurce. I got the pastelón, which is essentially a take on lasagna but instead of pasta its sweet plantains. I didn’t snag a picture because frankly it wasn’t pretty enough, but trust me- it was DELICIOUS. Like a Puerto Rican moussaka- all the things good in this world, really.
The next day, we left our house at 5:30 am to catch the 9 am ferry to the island of Culebra. (Yes, you did the math right, Fajardo ferry terminal is an hour away from San Juan, and the ferry was scheduled for 9) - It’s an island about equidistant from Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, approximately an hour east of PR. I was nervous about this ferry since I had read online it could be rough seas, and with my seasickness, I knew it could get ugly. Luckily, I could recline my head back so I felt fine- but man, the seas were unkind to us that morning. At least 10 people in my immediate proximity were stumbling over to the trash can/bathroom. People were dropping like flies! Bags were being passed left and right, people were toppling over pale and drenched with sweat... it was atrocious. Like a cafeteria food fight, but not fun. After an hour or so of that torture, we landed on the island and decided to rent a golf cart to navigate to/from the beaches around the coastline.
Drinking a piña colada on the 2nd most beautiful beach in the world. My white privilege is checking in right about now.
Flamenco Beach was gorgeous. The sand was fine and white, the water was bright turquoise, and the coastline was curved perfectly like a horseshoe. It was well worth waking up at 5 am to see.
After our time at the beach, we decided to go snorkeling for a bit at Melones Point and try to find some turtles. No turtles unfortunately, but we saw some cool fish and got a lot of hilarious snorkel photos in the water.
After a full day without food, I decided to get some sustenance at Zaco’s Tacos while waiting for our 5 pm ferry back to the main island- would recommend if you’re on Culebra, it’s reasonably priced and the tortillas are definitely made in house (as a Southern Californian, you can tell).
The next day, we had our zip lining adventure in El Yunque National Rainforest. Fun fact, PR is home to the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Parks system. So, when in Rome.
The rainforest was beautiful. The park was a combination of 8 zip lines, mostly short, but the longest was about 2000 feet long over unobstructed tree tops with a view to the ocean. Simply incredible.
Jacked mushrooms go zip lining
After our boost of adrenaline, we ventured into the rainforest to check out a suggested trail to a swimming hole in the river. The “hike” was about 10-15 minutes, really a casual stroll, but the swimming hole was beautiful, and well worth the confusing drive/30 potholes I ruined our rental car with.
Like basically any other body of water in/near Puerto Rico, the river was clear and there were these cute fish swimming around us the whole time. They kept bumping into me though, which I didn’t know to find endearing or creepy.
After another long day, we got food at this restaurant on the beach called El Alambique, where we got buzzed off more piña coladas (an ongoing trend over spring break) and I ate a seafood salad the size of my torso. The Syracuse game was also on at the bar the whole time, funny enough.
The next few days were slightly uneventful, as we had to return our rental car (the crappy Hyundai Accent we became so attached to, listening to Puerto Rican radio and counting iguana roadkill on the highways... final number of 26 FYI) and we had already hit everything on our itinerary. We ended up spending a day the the Renaissance Hotel on the beach in Condado, which was great because we got all the perks of staying there without actually dishing out the $400 a night!
Sipping on prosecco like I’m actually worth something
For lunch, we walked to a nearby food truck called Kabanas for the best fish tacos I’ve had in my life.
You really can’t go wrong with fresh red snapper though, can you?
Afterwards, we went home to get ready for dinner and happy hour. We went to a rooftop restaurant called El Punto de Vista in Old San Juan, where they have 2 for 1 mojitos EVERY DAY until 5 pm. Need I say more?
This place is known for their mofongo, which is another Puerto Rican specialty. Take plantains, fry them, mash them, then top them with meat/seafood and a sauce. This is mofongo with shrimp and garlic sauce. Come on, forget about it.
The next day, I went on a run around Condado to get some exercise. After realizing I hadn’t been that warm in about 5-6 months, it made sense why about 2 miles in I was dripping sweat. I ran around the lagoon and back and managed to snap this photo:
Ah, what it would be like to run this every morning
The next day or so we pretty much screwed around San Juan and ate a lot more. Our last night, we went out to La Placita de Santurce and it would have been like 150% more fun if any of us were in the mood to binge drink. If you’ve been to Hong Kong, I would compare this to a Puerto Rican LKF: a concentrated network of bars and clubs and drunk pedestrians crowding the streets looking for the next place to go. Good vibes, readily available alcohol, and a crowd with people young and old... it was the place to be on a Friday night.
Unfortunately, the next day I woke up with a sore throat, and what viral infection I thought I fended off right before break finally caught up with me. I took it easy my last day there, and we finished off with dinner at one of the most renowned restaurants in San Juan- Jose Enrique. To preface, it’s got 680 reviews on yelp and 4.5 stars, and at opening at 6:30 pm there was a line to get in about 30 people long. Was it worth all that hype? Maybe- the food was incredible, I got the snapper which was fried and served with a sweet potato puree and a papaya avocado pico de gallo. It was, in all worlds, a very good meal. If you can swing the wait, I recommend going here.
I’m not going to talk about the 15.5 hour horror story that was our trip back to Syracuse, but to give you an idea, it lasted from 12 am to 3:30 pm the next day. So, I’ll leave you with my favorite song right now, that we heard about 3 times a day in PR. It’s a bop.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kJQP7kiw5Fk
Thanks for reading, and I’ll see you next time!
Hasta luego~

'Hatid Tulong' sends 150 LSIs back home
#PHnews: 'Hatid Tulong' sends 150 LSIs back home
MANILA – Thankful and happy.
This was the feeling of some of the 150 locally stranded individuals (LSIs) who were sent back to their hometowns in the Bicol region on Saturday morning via a Philippine National Railways train, through the Duterte administration’s "Hatid Tulong" initiative.
Aside from the free transportation back to their home province, they were also given cash assistance by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), a bag of groceries, and food for their trip.
France Avila was traveling with her three children aged eight, seven, and one. They visited her husband in Las Piñas to spend a two-week vacation but got stuck when the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) was declared in the National Capital Region to contain the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) outbreak.
“Kaming mag-iina, pinupuntahan namin ang asawa ko dito para magbakasyon, pag walang klase sa Bicol. Mga two weeks lang. Namimili rin (kami) ng gamit ng mga bata. Tapos, umuuwi na kami sa Bicol. Kaso nung March, hindi na kami nakauwi kasi nag-lockdown na. Kasama ko ang mga bata kasi hindi nakakauwi ang papa nila. Dun sa Bicol nag-aaral ang mga bata (My children and I usually come to Manila during the school break and stay for about two weeks. I bring the kids along because my husband rarely goes home to Bicol, where the children study. We shop here and then, we return to Bicol. But in March, we got stuck because of the lockdown),” France said.
She said she was very thankful to the government for being given priority under the “Hatid Tulong” program because they would finally be able to go home.
”Inasikaso kami talagang mag-iina. They attended to our needs. I sent them a text message and after three days, I received a call. They said that we were prioritized because I have children. We were given PHP5,000 plus food, especially for the kids).”
Upon arrival at the PNR station on Friday afternoon, all the “Hatid Tulong” beneficiaries were subjected to a rapid test for Covid-19.
This is to make sure that the LSIs are negative of the virus for their safety and that of their families when they arrive in Bicol.
PNR employees continuously reminded the LSIs to follow safety protocols, observe physical distancing, wash and disinfect their hands, and always wear their face masks.
Lost their jobs due to lockdown
Mary Anne Cynthia Nieves, another LSI, was relieved that she would finally be able to go home to Sipocot, Camarines Sur.
Mary Anne recalled that she wanted to go home before the lockdown was imposed. She was employed as a "kasambahay" together with her husband.
“Kaso nung mag-lockdown, nagkatanggalan sa trabaho. Tapos wala na kaming matirahan (When the lockdown was imposed, we lost our jobs and had nowhere to go),” she said. “Buti na lang may kababayan kami sa Caloocan na pumayag na makitira muna kami sa kanya pansamantala. Ang hirap ng sitwasyon namin. Buti na lang may ganito palang programa ang gobyerno (It’s good that a townmate of ours took us temporarily into his home in Caloocan. Our situation was very difficult. It’s good to know that the government has this program).”
Mary Anne thanked the government for helping bring back stranded individuals in Metro Manila to their home province.
“Nakakatulong po masyado ito (sa) katulad namin na gustong-gusto na naming umuwi, dahil tulad nitong na-lockdown kami dito at wala kaming trabaho (This program is such a big help to us who really want to go home, especially in our case, there’s a lockdown and we are unemployed),” she said. “Nag rapid test din kami kaya hindi na kami natatakot umuwi (We also took the rapid test, that is why we are no longer afraid to go home).”
Like Mary Anne and her husband, Mark Denver Sabinorio came to the city for work.
Sabinorio was working for a factory in Valenzuela. He had just returned from a vacation in January when several weeks later, the lockdown was imposed.
“Kakaunti pa lang ang naipon ko. Magta-tatlong buwan na kaming walang trabaho kaya napilitan ako na mag apply dito sa ‘Hatid Tulong’ (I had little savings. I have been jobless for almost three months, so I applied in ‘Hatid Tulong’),” he said.
Although they would undergo a 14-day quarantine when they arrive in Bicol, Mark Denver said that is fine with him.
He said people should follow the health protocol because it is for their own good, “para siguradong wala akong madalang virus sa aking pamilya (to be sure that I do not infect my family)."
Mark Denver said he was thankful for all the assistance extended to them by the government.
“Wala akong ginastos kahit magkano kasi libre na po lahat, pati po pagkain. May binigay po sila na kaunting grocery. Nabigyan din kami ng DSWD ng PHP2,000. Yun po yung assistance nila sa amin para may dalhin din po kami pag-uwi namin sa pamilya namin (I did not spend a single centavo. Everything is free. They also gave us some groceries and the PHP2,000 cash assistance from the DSWD, so we would have something for our families),” he said.
Stranded student
Because of the lockdown, many students temporarily staying in the NCR were unable to go back to their families in the provinces.
Bryan Resoco, a student at the Batangas State University, was in Manila for his on-the-job training at the University of the Philippines in Diliman but was stuck when the ECQ was declared.
Since he was only renting a small space in an apartment, he did not have a television. It was his father in Bicol who informed him of the “Hatid Tulong” program.
“Nakita po ng tatay ko sa balita. Wala kasi kaming TV sa apartment. Sinabi ng tatay ko sa akin, may nakapaskil na number. Nag-text ako dun, tapos ayun, nasama ako sa listahan (My father saw it in the news -- I did not have a television set in the apartment. My father gave me a number and I texted it. Somebody called me up to inform me that I was included in the list),” Bryan narrated.
During the time that he was in Manila, he was in constant touch with his family back home who wanted to make sure that he was fine and safe.
“Masaya po ang mga magulang ko na merong ganitong programa ang gobyerno at dahil dito makakauwi na ako. Nakakatulong po siya lalo na ngayon wala pong ibang paraan ng transportasyon (My parents are very happy with this government program, through which I could now go home. It is a big help, especially now that there is no available transportation going to the province),” Bryan said.
Travel time from Manila to Bicol, according to a PNR staff, would be about 12 hours.
The PNR employees assured that their passengers would be provided with food for a comfortable trip.
As soon as they arrive in their respective provinces, these “Hatid Tulong” beneficiaries would be isolated for 14 days by their respective local government units to ensure that they are Covid-19-free. (PNA)

10 Unique Destination Wedding Locations & Ideas - Wedding Shoppe
Just picture it: Friends and family gathered together in some picturesque vacation spot. Everyone retelling old stories and making new memories while sipping on piña coladas – toasting to the lovely couple at every opportunity, of course. Then, after the vows are said and the dances are danced, that lovely couple (hint: you) stays right where you are to begin your honeymoon.
Doesn’t it sound dreamy? Well, the good news is, it’s actually possible to make that your reality. And we’re here to help make that come true!
The biggest reservation people have about a destination wedding is that it seems too big a hassle to plan such a big and important event like this from a distance. But the truth is, with some good guidance and resources, it doesn’t have to be so daunting. That’s why we’ve put together a handy-dandy guide you can turn to as you navigate the decisions and details of planning a destination wedding.
Your Guide to a Dream Destination Wedding
Let’s begin with the tried-and-true method of comparing the awesome stuff with the “ehh, I’m not crazy about that” stuff.
Pros (AKA The Awesome Stuff):
The aforementioned dreaminess of it all. Be prepared for unforgettable moments and flawless pictures (no filter necessary). Plus, it’s a little escape from reality for you and your loved ones.
An untraditional setting. If you’re looking to do something a little different, a destination wedding will definitely do the trick.
More ways to keep costs in check. The biggest expense when it comes to wedding is providing food and beverages to all your guests. So, the easiest way to save money is by keeping your guest list as lean as you can.
A built-in honeymoon! Wake up the next morning, store your wedding dress in the closet, and bring out the swimsuits – because the honeymooning has officially begun. No need to mess with the stress of airports and TSA checks when you’re already at your destination!
Cons (AKA The “Ehh, I’m not crazy about that” Stuff):
Travel expenses (airfare, hotels, food). Well, that’s fare. (Get it?) But luckily, there are tons of resources that can give you the best rates. Apple Vacations is great for finding destination wedding packages including affordable flights and hotel rates – and some good all-inclusive options, too! Also (speaking from experience here), the place where you do your ceremony or reception might offer a discounted rate for groups, especially if some will be staying with them or their affiliates. Tip: If you go abroad, prices are cheaper in, say, a Caribbean country because the cost of living is much lower.
The planning logistics and seeing it all unfold from a distance. Unless you have a large wedding budget, you probably won’t get to see your wedding venue before you arrive for the actual thing. This can be stressful for some, but it can be easier than you think thanks to to Facetime and Skype and WiFi being available pretty much everywhere on Planet Earth.
Communicating with your guests while phone-less abroad. If you travel outside your country, be prepared to deal with phone carriers and data rates. WiFi can be spotty, and you might not be able to rely on your smartphone for all your usual comforts like GPS. (Remember that you don’t have to go abroad! There are plenty of beautiful spots right in your home country!)
It just seems like a lot of work. Destination weddings are still weddings after all, and weddings are a ton of work. Tip: If you’re having your ceremony at a resort, they often have wedding or event planners on staff that could basically do all the heavy-lifting for you! We’re just sayin’ – it doesn’t hurt to ask. ?
What to Wear
Not shoes, for starters. Kidding, you can totally wear shoes if you want to. But how great is it that, in most of these places, you don’t have to?
When choosing dresses for you and/or your bridesmaids, the first thing you may want to first consider is the heat factor. Nobody wants to be uncomfortable and sweaty during your wedding, which should be a carefree, stress-free and sweat-free experience.
Whether you go short or long is totally up to you! We just have some suggestions about the material. For example, a floor-length satin gown for your bridesmaids might not be the best choice. Silk is not salt water-friendly and netting is not tree- or branch-friendly. So, most women we’ve spoken to agree that chiffon is the best choice when it comes to tropical weddings. It’s light and airy, and it comes in almost every color and style imaginable.

10 Fun & Unique Destination Wedding Locations:
1. Las Vegas, Nevada
I’m sure you had a feeling that Vegas would be included on this list, and with dozens of chapels along its famous strip, why wouldn’t it be?
The Vegas wedding is ideal for couples who want to elope quickly, but can also accommodate brides and grooms with full bridal parties and guests attached. Want to be married by Elvis? No problem. Rock on over to the Graceland Wedding Chapel. Really can’t wait to marry your honey? Head over to the “Tunnel of Love” and up to the “drive-thru” window at A Little White Wedding Chapel. Your nuptials can even be broadcast over the Internet for loved ones who couldn’t make the trip.
If you are planning a more traditional ceremony, Sin City has plenty of beautiful settings located in many of its hotels. A lot of hotel chapels offer packages that will help you save money on flowers, caterers, photography, and more—and many even have coordinators in-house who will help you with all of your arrangements.
One thing to note about a Vegas wedding, though, is to plan accordingly to season. As we all know, Las Vegas is located in the desert, so be prepared for the time of year in which you visit.
Viva, Las Vegas!
Cabo isn’t just for spring-breakers—the Mexican city remains one of the most popular places for Americans to get hitched. You can pretty much plan for beautiful and perfect weather no matter what time of year it is, and if you’re inclined to have a beach ceremony, it’s not unheard of for unannounced guests like humpback whales and other ocean life to make an appearance.
It’s relatively easy for guests to find a great place to stay because of the city’s plethora of hotels and resorts for a variety of different budgets, and you’d be hard-pressed to find locals who don’t speak at least some English. Even when the nuptials are over, bridal party participants and guests alike will have plenty of activities to keep them entertained like beach volleyball, snorkeling, hiking, golfing, and more.
And brides, let us not forget about the many spa treatments available! A massage on the beach sounds pretty heavenly.

Another unique spot to tie the knot includes the beautiful city of Florence. Deemed as one of the major art and history capitals of Europe and the birthplace of the Renaissance, you can find romance in Florence around just about any corner. For the more dramatic affair, la Salla Rossa or The Red Hall, is the most popular place in Italy for weddings and it’s easy to see why: The hall is decorated with incredible red carpets, drapes, and wall art dating back to its renovation in the 1860’s.

If you get a chance to explore amidst your plans and celebrations, check out the many exhibits and museums located in Florence, including the infamous Uffizi Gallery featuring art by Leonardo di Vinci, Michelangelo, Rembrandt, and more.
Florence is also home to some of the best Italian cuisine in the world, which could be the perfect touch to your dinner and wedding reception.
4. Hawaii
Well, besides the fact that almost every spot in Hawaii is breathtaking and would make for gorgeous photos, there’s always good weather! Dry season runs from May through October, and after that, rainfall (if you get any at all) is short-lived and mild. If you could avoid going during tourist season (winter through early spring), even better. Also a big bonus: there are endless options for fun things your guests can do, no matter what their ages and interests.
5. Door County, Wisconsin
Besides the beautiful lakefront backdrop, this spot is convenient in so many ways. It’s a four-hour drive from Chicago, Illinois and Madison, Wisconsin. There are wineries and farms all around the area, making for the tastiest beverages and freshest meals of your own choice. This quaint little vacation spot, located between Green Bay and and Lake Michigan, has earned the title of the “Cape Cod of the Midwest.”
Fall is gorgeous in Door County, although summer is usually the most popular time to wed here. If you choose to go the summer route, we recommend booking early. Winter is not ideal, as it often brings snow, frigid temperatures and icy roads. But hey, if you’re going for that Game of Thrones vibe, don’t let us stop you! (Just be sure to travel safe.)
6. Jamaica
What better spot to kick off the start of your marriage than in Jamaica? This destination is definitely catered to the island-and-sun-loving among us. Couples have been traveling to Jamaica to get married for decades due to its beaches, mountains, waterfalls, and colorful culture. Jamaica offers plenty of options for lodging, and features many all-inclusive varieties—great for guests on a tight budget.
7. Alaska
My personal favorite. This unique destination wedding location is geared toward the more rugged, adventurous couple—but don’t let the thought of snow and ice scare you—Alaska is one of the most beautiful places on earth offering scenic views of mountains, the ocean, rivers, waterfalls, lakes—really, you name it: Alaska’s got it. Even professional photography can’t do the view justice.
Speaking from experience, I was a little wary to attend my best friend’s May big day in Alaska. Will it be cold? Should I be worried about bears? But everything was lovelier than I ever could have imagined. Alaska, believe it or not, is beaming with native culture and extravagant forces of nature—all at a cool 60 degrees in spring.
Before the sight-to-behold of a ceremony held on the beach of one of Alaska’s southern shores, we were treated to hiking, conversing with locals, a boat ride around the bay, and even halibut and king salmon fishing charters. Some of the guests actually rented an RV and drove into Denali National Park after the reception was over—if you love getting back to nature and spending time in the great outdoors, an Alaskan destination big day comes highly recommended.
8. Cartagena, Colombia
When it comes to destination weddings, the coast of Colombia is a little-known gem that’s likely going to become more and more popular with time. The country left behind its complicated past of the 80s and 90s, and is now a much safer and fun place to visit. Prices in Cartagena are much more reasonable than in the States, and if you pass through South Florida, it’s a short two-hour flight from there.
You can either have your dream wedding on a gorgeous spot on the beach, or in La Ciudad Antigua (“the Old City”) with its vibrant colors and distinct architectural styles. Cartagena is one of the most beautiful cities on the coast where the people are friendly, hospitable and thankful to have you there.
9. The Florida Keys
The Florida Keys are made up of a bunch of little islands – Key Largo, Conch Key, Islamorada, Little Torch Key, Sugarloaf Key and all the keys in between. So, you have tons of options you can look into! On top of the tropical allure and the many activities that come with it, the Keys also have some fascinating historical elements, too. Peak tourist season is between December and April, so you may want to shoot for some time in the summer or fall.
Pretty much any spot in The Keys would make for an unforgettable wedding destination. The region has all the beauty of the Caribbean with all the benefit of staying in the States. What we’re trying to say is, you don’t have to go too far to get to paradise.
10. Outer Banks, North Carolina
With its 130 miles of open beach, this region offers a picturesque location that might not be too far from home for you (but still feels like a vacation). The weather is best in the late spring, summer, or even at the start of fall. Of course, fall and winter will be most affordable for traveling, and the orange-y sunsets during those seasons will take your breath away.
You have the option of going with a tropical beach setting or a more rustic lighthouse backdrop – or both for different parts of the big celebration! Whichever route you choose, you can’t go wrong. Because even though it’s right here at home, it will feel like a scene out of a storybook.
Tips & Advice
Lastly, we wanted to leave you with a few tips for planning and pulling off a dream-come-true destination wedding:
* When you choose your venue, ask if there’s a wedding planner available that could help you coordinate everything.
* If you have friends or family that live near the destination, ask them to scope out the scene or meet with your planner/coordinator if need be.
* For the guests, make an itinerary that includes where they should be at what time, and the contact info for you or anybody else they can reach out to while there (maid of honor, best man, parents, etc.).
* Find out who will need special care and make arrangements for that.
* Give people a list of suggested activities they can do during their stay there (besides attend the wedding, of course). This could include places to eat, attractions to see, or tours to try out. Help your guests make the most of their time and fully enjoy the location you pick!
* Delegate tasks. If there’s ever a time to not feel bad asking for help, this is it. Plus, your loved ones will be thrilled to be involved in your special day and help in any way!
* Most importantly, take deep breaths, smile and have fun! You’re marrying your honey, and what could be sweeter than that?

Atitlán
Lake Atitlán is a lake in the Guatemalan altiplanos about 2 hours east of Xela by bus well known for its iconic geography and diverse Mayan history and languages. It’s a popular tourist destination, as the stunning vistas and classic Guatemalan lakeside towns make for a relaxing getaway from some of the more polluted larger cities in Guatemala. There is an interesting mix of cultures around the lake, from traditional Mayan peoples wearing huipil and corte to a hippie culture that has flourished in recent years to the more tourist-centered guide companies and overpriced restaurants. It’s a site that can’t be missed if one is traveling to Guatemala.
This past weekend, I make the trek to Lake Atitlán from Xela by bus through winding mountain roads as we drop a few thousand feet of elevation to the volcano-ringed caldera that forms the lake. It’s a large group of 13 of us in the bus, having coordinated our trip with friends from multiple different programs in Xela. Five other girls on our program from UVA will also meet us at the lake, as they are working on a clean water initiative in a small town there. We’re on our way to San Pedro, a popular town on the west side of the lake that boasts a good blend of both tourist and more local cultures. I’ve decided to stay with 3 of my friends from Xela in a cheap hostel “Mr. Mullets”, which is popular among tourists but appears to have a good reputation for its social atmosphere.
The first day at the lake, Saturday, I spend largely relaxing with the folks from Xela. In the late morning, we make our way to another hostel, Zoola, which has a bar overlooking the lake and an open-air swimming pool. Why the pool? Sadly, Lake Atitlán has suffered from significant pollution over the last 20 years, and it’s not particularly safe to swim in with all of the waste and algae bloom that covers parts of the lake. It’s a beautiful location, but the pollution is a pragmatic reminder of the lack of infrastructure in Guatemala. And it’s a reminder that in America, we have the luxury to propose initiatives to save the environment; in Guatemala, the government has to pick and choose where it will spend its money. The environment may not be the highest priority.
The view from the pool at Zoola. Note the algae growth in the background on the lake.
After a couple of drinks around the pool, the group decides to jump spots and hop on a lancha (these are small motorboats that run between the towns on the lake for somewhere between Q15-Q25) across the lake to a small town called Jaibalito. The group tells me that over there, there’s a small hotel with an infinity pool, jacuzzi, poolside bar, and good view of the lake. While I’m not so fond of only drinking and lounging when traveling, I’m keen on relaxing and take the adventure in stride. Traveling is all about being flexible, and I’m optimistic something fun will happen across the lake.
And fun it is! The hotel in Jaibalito is a gem. The pool has a great view of the lake, and they make a killer basil mojito of which I have a couple. There’s also a small TV that one can see from the jacuzzi playing the Russia-Croatia World Cup game, so that’s where I elect to sit. In the jacuzzi, I meet a group of local girls traveling together, and before long we get to talking. Two are from Guatemala City, and one has come to the lake all the way from Costa Rica! I end up spending a while talking to one of the girls, Pamela, because I learn that she has recently earned her degree as a nutritionist, and I am curious to know more about her work here in Guatemala. I’m glad to have made some local friends, and before we have to leave a few hours later I make sure to exchange numbers.
After a bumpy lancha ride (the lake gets quite windy in the afternoon), I get back to Mr. Mullets around dinner time. Getting back to my room I find my roommate, Melu, lying down in bed not looking so well. It seems like she’s caught the stomach bug (pretty much a requisite of coming to Guatemala) of the “front-end” type, and she’s not feeling so well. I’ve got a little bit of medical knowledge, some Tylenol, and a big bottle of water so I take a minute to empathize with her and let her know it’ll likely be okay as long as she takes care of her fluid intake. It’s a brief moment, perhaps 5 minutes, where I’m reminded of some of the reasons why I went into medicine. It’s nothing big – just a snapshot of compassion where I’m able to reassure a fellow human being that they’ll most likely be okay, and that yes, it’s never fun to feel sick. In that common ground, we earn each other’s trust. I give her a hug, and she climbs back up to her bunk feeling a little better.
Just as I’m about to walk off to the shower with my towel in hand, another girl opens the door to our room. “Welcome to our room!” I exclaim, hoping to make another friend in the hostel. Megan is a tall, blonde girl with soft blue eyes and a happy face who looks to be traveling alone. We get to talking, and before long I’ve forgotten about that shower I was going to take. She’s American, from what I would consider to be the Pacific Northwest (Montana), and it turns out we’ve got lots in common. She’s at Lake Atitlán for a month to study Spanish and live with a host family, but this is her first day on her own and she’s at the hostel hoping to meet some new people. We end up talking for at least a couple of hours – she’s reading “The Handmaid’s Tale” by Margaret Atwood; we chat about my work at the hospital here; a little bit of her home life.
Before leaving for dinner with some of my program-mates I convince Megan to join me and my friend Erinn for a sunrise hike the next day at Indian Nose, a popular viewpoint of the lake where one can see seven of Guatemala’s 37 volcanoes lined up, including the infamous Volcán de Fuego which recently erupted sadly killing over 100 local Guatemalans. Melu looks to be a little too sick still to get up for the 0330 wake-up call, so I’m glad I’ll have another friend from the hostel joining me.
The next morning, as promised, Megan and I wake up at 0330 to make sure we’re at the tour company next door for our departure time at 0400. Indian Nose is a popular hike around San Pedro, so we pack in tightly with the rest of our group to one of the ubiquitous minibuses that form much of the local transportation in Guatemala. With our three guides sitting in front, we begin our short drive to the trailhead up through the potholed dirt roads of the pueblos in the hills above San Pedro.
At one of the city centers, a couple of armed policemen flag us down and hop aboard. ¿Quieren que les acompañemos? they question, asking if we’d like an escort. The guides acquiesce; unfortunately on many hikes in Guatemala, it’s safer for tourists to go with police escorts because robbers hide out on trails, knowing they can take advantage of relatively wealthy hikers walking with expensive cameras, cellphones, and other outdoor gear.
We arrive at the trailhead and begin a brief walk through the cornfields in the backyards of the small pueblo at the base of Indian Nose before arriving at a more established trail that winds through the mountainside. One of our guides, Jorge, teaches me about some of the fauna and flora surrounding us, including café bushes that extend down the hillside with their still-unripe green coffee beans as well as trees with mottled bark that he tells me are used to make the traditional Guatemalan marimbas. He pauses for a second on the trailhead, pointing out a couple of small herbs. Esta es la que te fortalece, he says, picking the leaves of one. Es como la marijuana, he continues with a hint of a smile. He wanders over to a different plant. Y esta, para el sueño. It’s good for sleep. The volcanic earth around Lake Atitlán is bountiful.
We wander on, catching our altitude-shortened breath every few steps, finding a series of small wooden ladders that lead us up the hillside. I won’t comment on their safety, but I do choose to use the knotted ropes that lie to the side of the latter to steady myself. After about 30 minutes, we crest the final hill to the mirador where we’ll watch the sun rise around 0530. There’s a small set of benches, and in the back is a shelter where our guides are heating up coffee in a large cast iron pot over a fire.
We grab a seat with some hot coffee and freshly-baked bread over one of the most spectacular vistas Guatemala has to offer, and I’m once again struck by the natural beauty of the country. The sunrise has only just begun, with the clouds flecked in a rose red that conjures to mind the lighting of a fire. In the foreground lies the volcano-ringed lake – including the massive Volcán San Pedro just off to our right.
Volcán San Pedro, right, and the town of San Pedro, front.

After about a half an hour, it’s time to begin the trek back to town for a much-needed nap. But I’m glad we got up early; it’s always a good feeling when it’s 7am and you feel as if you’ve already accomplished so much with the day.
After a brief nap and delicious breakfast of eggs, bacon, and avocado toast (millenials, amirite?) I get together with Megan, another of our new roommates, Karen, and her friend Lise to go out and explore the lake for the day. I propose that we walk over to the hostel Zoola again to grab some drinks, as it turns out that my new local friend Pamela and her friends are coming to San Pedro for the day and want to meet us there. We end up hanging out by the pool for a little while, and while it’s only around 10:30 in the morning we figure it’s about time for a piña colada:
From Zoola, we manage to convince Pamela to join us for a quick trip on a lancha over to Santiago, and adjacent town on the lake, for lunch and to explore the Sunday market. Santiago is famous for this market, as it’s the largest one on the lake.
After a relatively nausea-inducing ride on the lancha towards Santiago (the lake gets quite windy and choppy during the afternoon), we are dropped right into the middle of a tranquil market that extends from the dock all the way up into the town of Santiago. Markets in Guatemala are diverse; vendors hawk wares anywhere from traditional handmade Guatemalan clothing to electronics to second-hand clothes. We walk up the hill towards town, ogling at the bountiful variety of colors, sounds, and smells.
Dried fish typical to a Guatemalan market.
After a couple of hours, we decide it’s time to head back to San Pedro to relax. We say goodbye to Pamela, who hops on a different lancha towards Panajachel to rejoin her friends across the lake. This time, the lancha ride is mercifully a little bit quicker and less choppy as the lake has cooled down a little bit.
From left to right, photo of me, Lise, and Karen on the lancha back from Santiago.
Typical street scene in San Pedro.
Back in San Pedro, we walk just a few short blocks to a small hotel named Mikaso, recommended to us by Pamela for its deck with jacuzzis overlooking the lake. When we arrive to the hotel, a sign clearly states that the jacuzzis are only for use by hotel guests, but you know the drill from when you were in high school or college. We waltz up the stairs to the roof deck with jacuzzis. In any case, we are hotel guests, perhaps just not at that particular hotel...
There on the deck at Mikaso, we spend at least a couple of hours relaxing in the sun, drinking cuba libres, and enjoying the warmth of the tubs. It’s rare that you find friends that you travel with this well, and even rarer to stumble upon so many experiences in a single day. Little did we know, there would be even more to come.
View from hotel Mikaso in San Pedro, Lago de Atitlán
Megan and Karen having some fun in the jacuzzi.
We cruise back to the hostel for a couple of happy hour drinks before heading out with a bigger group of friends to a restaurant named Clover recommended to me by one of the Spanish teachers at our school, Claudia. A departure from traditional Guatemalan fare, Clover offers Asian fusion food with dishes such as Thai green curry and spring rolls. It’s a solid meal for a good price, and we hang out in the garden with drinks for a couple of hours enjoying the ambience and the scenery of the lake.
After dinner, we decide to walk just a few blocks over to a carnival that we’ve learned is happening that night in San Pedro. We’re not exactly sure what the party entails, but we know from earlier in the day that a Ferris wheel is involved somehow, as we saw it being set up earlier in the day coming back from Santiago.
The carnival Ferris wheel.
A children’s ride at the carnival.
It’s dark out, but the carnival is full of lights and sounds. We walk past kids jumping on giant trampolines, arcades with old video game consoles (I would have paid good money to play some Metal Slug, but alas it wasn’t one of them) other, more improvised arcades set up with personal televisions and game consoles, foosball tables, more classic carnival gambling games such as airsoft target shooting, food vendors with fried foods...there is something for everyone.
A few minutes later, wandering down a narrow street packed on either side with games and vendors, we stumble upon what appears to be the Guatemalan version of a roulette table. The roulette wheel is adorned with Guatemalan playing cards in a circle, with different colored pins stuck at various intervals. Viene la rosa, la rosa, cien quetzales, la rosa viene, hollers the “dealer”, an energetic man in his 30s who appears to have much experience hosting the game as evidenced by his polished vernacular. Folks crowd around the table to place small bets of 1-2 quetzales on either colors or cards. Some cards, like the rosa, hold a value of 100 quetzales; winning on a color only returns a 5:1 value (there are 4 colors).
Playing the Guatemalan roulette game.
We play a couple of rounds, a highly enjoyable experience as the dealer amps up the drama by calling out cards and colors to lure people in to placing additional bets as the wheel spins. I end up losing a couple of quetzales, but Megan places a bet on the pajaro card and wins Q20! We decide to quit while we’re ahead, and wander off to the rest of the carnival.
Only a few paces later, we stumble upon the same rickety Ferris wheel that we saw earlier in the day. A handwritten sign scrawled in Sharpie states the price: Q5/2 people, about 75 cents. Megan graciously offers to pay for us with her winnings, and we hop on.
This isn’t like your typical Ferris wheel.
The Ferris wheel is unlike any I’ve ever seen. A teenage boy sits in a small seat connected to a large gas-powered generator at the base hooked up to a car battery and accelerator pedal, which is then attached to a network of metal cables strung around the wheel. I’m pretty sure the kid is stoned by looking at him. Safety standards are not particularly apparent on this ride.
After waiting about 15 minutes to fill all the seats on the ride, our operator hits the gas and flings us around faster than I’m sure the law allows in the States. Along with the speed, the yellow chairs are attached via a free-spinning metal bar, so we swing forwards and backwards. Megan grabs my arm and squeals in a mix of fear and excitement. Another 15 minutes later (this is the longest Ferris ride wheel of my life) we slow to a stop and un-board the ride. Exhilarated, we walk back towards the center of the carnival. Having so much fun I had lost track of time; it’s already close to midnight! I announce that I’d like to wander back to the hostel, and the others agree. We’re exhausted.
Lake Atitlán was beautiful, and the adventures I had were unforgettable. I’m unsure if I’ll ever get to see the girls again, although I know we’d be delighted if it were to happen. But in those few days at the lake together, it was as if we became best friends. Because friendship isn’t necessarily dependent on the amount of time people spend together, but rather on the type and the quality of the time spent together.

I recently spent eight days in the Philippines. That’s eight days out of 64 years of my life. I’ve made a list of over a dozen topics I want to write about. Is it arrogantly absurd that the topics number more than the days I was there? How do I swoop in and out of a country and expect anything I write to have depth or meaning? Will I conjure things that don’t exist? Will my desire for connection slurry into wishful thinking?
Will I simplify? Objectify? Distort? Will my privilege cause me to sentimentalize or condescend? Will my memories fade over time or will they concretize into a stilted moment without context?
At night I lie awake, brain waves spiking with thoughts of how oceans separate families, how war and economic oppression drive migration, how colonization obliterates, enriches, and confounds cultures. How a Spanish galleon connected the two lands of my heritage – the Philippines and Mexico. How that most succulent and luscious of fruits – the mango – made its way from Manila to Acapulco and when I slide its sweet pulp in my mouth, slurp its juices off the pit and pull its threads from my teeth and swallow, I am eating my own history.
How social media can make an ocean a little less wide and deep, and a history more accessible. How it enabled members of a family to reconnect after years of being lost to each other.
How.
This summer I’m going to one of my favorite places – the Port Townsend Writers’ Conference. I’ve signed up for a workshop on writing flash non-fiction – the perfect fit for my flash Philippines sojourn. I will write myriad little flashes from my blink-of-an-eye experience.
In the meantime, here are some photos – static moments of being that hold glimmers of stories that I will someday write.
Here’s the sign that greeted me at the Manila airport. I apologized inwardly for having taken so long to get there.
Here are day and night time views of Manila from the condo we rented for a few days in Malate. We looked out the balcony first thing each morning and last thing at night. We could hear the traffic of this pulsing, nerve-wracking, electrifying, and fascinating city all the way from the 50th floor.
Here I am with my daughter Natalie, an excellent travel companion. I’ve already posted elsewhere the good pictures of us together, so here’s one on the volcano island in the middle of Taal Lake. A goat appears to be coming out of my ass. I am a mythical creature in a spirit land.
Here’s the precious gift my sweet cousin Malou gave me. This pen belonged to her mother, my father’s sister, the sibling who survived the longest of the children of my Filipino grandparents, Rosendo Miscolta and Donata Tiongkiao. I never got to meet Tita Melia. She passed away a month before my visit. Malou had my name engraved on the pen and now a triangle is etched on my heart. My father did crossword puzzles. I learned that Melia did too, maybe with this pen. And guess who does the NYT crossword every day? Hint: Me.
Here’s me riding in a jeepney in Las Piñas as James Lazarra, a proud Las Piñero, tells me about the history of his (and my father’s) hometown.
Tionquiao, also spelled Tiongkiao, is a common name in Las Piñas. On my father’s side, I am a Miscolta and a Tiongkiao. If you’re a Tiongkiao, your origins lie in Las Piñas, James Lazarra says.
Here’s me on what seems to be a duck ramp. I scooted down to scoop some seawater into a small vial. The next time I’m in San Diego, CA, I will sprinkle Las Piñas water on my father’s grave. I also scraped some soil from the plant bed at the entrance to the jeepney company. I will sprinkle this Philippine soil on his grave as well.
These are views from James Lazarra’s office just above Plaza Quezon and Padre Diego Cera Street in Las Piñas. My father and grandfather walked these streets.
And here I am gazing at the street below. Thanks to Natalie for capturing this moment — more than a glimmer, more than a flash. On the brink of forever.
Someday I will write about the Philippines I recently spent eight days in the Philippines. That’s eight days out of 64 years of my life.
