Hallucinate - Matt Murdock x Powered! Reader Part 5

Series Summary: When members of a criminal organization start flooding precincts all over New York, turning themselves in, Daredevil must investigate to see what new player has them running for the hills.

Chapter Summary: Daredevil searches for (Y/n) after she goes missing.

Word Count: 1447

Warnings: Major angst, cursing, kidnapping, violence, mentions of needles

Author’s note: Ugh i published this one so late but at least it gave the other chapters time to accumulate some notes!

If Matt hadn’t caught those two armed lookouts scoping out his apartment, he probably wouldn’t have gotten to (Y/n) in time.

They had been most likely sent there to keep tabs on him, maybe even grab him if given a good enough opportunity. Luckily for Matt, even his racing thoughts weren’t enough to drown out their mouth breathing.

It took some time to get them to fess up to where (Y/n) would have been taken, given the fact that there were two facilities meant that there as a 50-50 chance of him going to the wrong one. 

After some convincing, and one unconscious henchman later, Daredevil knew (Y/n) had been taken to the facility on the West side of Hell’s Kitchen.

It took him roughly 30 minutes to get there, the only reason he knew he made it was the sound of Blum’s voice as he was leaving the building.

Daredevil perched himself on the roof of the warehouse, trying to suppress his heavy breathing after all the running he had just done.

“What happens now, sir? We know Daredevil was working with her, what steps do we take to make sure he doesn’t try to interfere?” a woman asked. She was following close behind Blum, the smell of nauseating chemicals clung to her coat.

“If he does we will deal with him accordingly,” Blum snapped, glancing at her from over his shoulder as he opened the door to the backseat of his car. “As of right now, the telepath is a greater threat to us than he is.”

The woman nodded. She folded her arms behind her back and straightened her posture. “And what am I supposed to do with her...?”

Blum, sitting in his car, didn’t even bother to look at her as he responded. “Put her back in the hole you first threw her in... this time, make sure she doesn’t get out.”

With that, he shut the car door, and his chauffeur took off. 

Matt waited as the woman, obviously one of the people in charge here, entered the warehouse and headed towards a stack of crates in the middle of the otherwise empty room. 

There had to have been an area underneath the building, somewhere they could keep (Y/n) and conduct business out of sight.

Sure enough, a large mechanical door hissed open from the crates once the woman input a code on a small keypad hidden on the side of the containers. Matt couldn't risk going near the elevator until it had reached its destination, knowing otherwise he would be caught.

He struggled to hear how many floors the elevator was descending until he presses his ear to the crates. The mechanical whir from the elevator echoed through the chamber, stopping at what had to be five floors down. He could only vaguely hear the clack of the woman’s shoes against the linoleum floors until the elevator door shut.

Matt began to work on the key code, sighing in frustration as he got it wrong the first few times.

A sudden scream burst through the crates, through the floors, through Matt’s entire being before finding its way to the filthy windows of the warehouse, shattering them. 

He had shut his eyes for a moment, wincing away from the intrusive screech and covering his ears.

But once he opened them, it was as if he hadn’t spent his whole life without his site. he could see, clear as day. At least it appeared that way.

Another scream caught his attention, this one much less visceral. He whipped his head in its direction, watching as a young woman was being dragged by two goons as she kicked and hollered to try and get away, her head covered with a burlap sack.

One of the men lost his grip on her, and she was able to swing her balled fist at the other, momentarily freeing herself. She ripped the bag off her head, and though Matt had never seen (Y/n)’s face, he knew it was her.

Everything about her was younger; she was shorter, her voice was different, she had to be in her 20s.

Matt made a move to grab her, only for his hand to phase through her. Rather than his gloved hand taking hold of her, it was the henchman’s instead.

She howled in fear, trying to fight him off as best as she could. They dragged her to the elevator, inputed the key code, and forced her inside. Matt followed after them, blinking and realizing he was alone again, his newfound sight now gone. He didn’t even remember putting in the correct code.

It was all a hallucination, something (Y/n) was putting in his head. It had to be.

As the elevator descended, the raw energy was becoming more and more palpable. Matt didn’t know what had happened within that span of what had to be five minutes, but it caused a change that radiated through the whole building.

The elevator opened, and Matt’s radar immediately picked up the sounds of men and women, scientists and guards all pressed to the walls and the floors, paralyzed.

Matt made his way past them, heading down the hallway towards where he could hear (Y/n)’s heartbeat.

It was erratic, her body was convulsing. The pained noises she made were muffled, but violent, as she struggled against whatever was holding her down.

Once he opened the door, his insides felt like goo, utter dread filled his being, he wanted to crawl in a corner and pray it all away.

‘It’s just (Y/n)... you have to get her...’

He stepped into the room, tensing as his temporary vision returned. 

The young image of (Y/n) was strapped down to a metal table, a leather gag in her mouth muffling her sobs. 

A large ECT machine sat idle beside her, the two electrodes pressed to her temples keeping her connected to the machine. Two IV bags full of a strange, blue substance hung beside the machine, their tubes coiling and weaving with those of the electrodes, eventually plugging into the devices.

(Y/n) looked directly at Matt, sobbing shakily and squirming against her restraints. He quickly moved to her side, taking the gag from her mouth and then the electrodes. As he slowly removed the electrodes, he saw the two long, thin needles protruding from them.

Once the needles had been completely removed, the vision was gone, and he was back in the real world. The sounds of the people who were once pressed against the walls of the building went limp, a unanimous THUD resounding through the halls.

(Y/n) laid across a metal table, just like the one from the vision, only this time metal cuffs kept her restrained at her wrists and ankles.

The woman, the scientist, was now limp in a chair at the head of the operating table. Matt’s senses picked up the key to the cuffs in her pocket. He made quick work of the restraints after retrieving the key.

He cupped (Y/n)’s cheek with one hand, gingerly holding her arm with the other as he began speaking to her, trying to wake her up. 

“(Y/n)...? (Y/n), it’s Daredevil... You need to wake up so I can get you out of here...” he breathed.

Her eyes were open, Matt knew that much, but she was almost in a catatonic state. He tried once more to snap her out of it, only to be met once more with silence.

With a grunt, he lifted her bridal style and left the room, passing by the stilled bodies as he made his way to the elevator.

(Y/n) now laid on Matt’s bed, in the same state as earlier that night. 

Wherever she had previously been staying was obviously compromised, and he heard no signs of any of Blum’s men watching his apartment. It was the safest place for her.

Matt shed his suit, taking his old black mask and tying it over his eyes once he had changed into something more comfortable.

Kneeling beside the bed, he took her hand, feeling no reaction from her. She hadn’t closed her eyes to try and sleep, only stared at the ceiling. 

From what Blum and the scientist had said, they had put (Y/n) in this state before. They just hadn’t expected her to free herself of it. Whatever the serum was in those IV bags, it must have given her the abilities. Or maybe it was the electroshock therapy. Who really knew?

What Matt did know, is if she had the strength to pull out of the empty space once, she could do it again.

Squeezing her hand in his, he bowed his head, and began to pray.

Woman's perfect response to congressman's ignorant health care question lights up Reddit

U.S. Rep. Rod Blum, R-Iowa, asked the worst hypothetical question about women's health care at a town hall in Iowa last week, but he got the best response for the ignorant statement — and it's going viral.

Blum asked at a Dubuque, Iowa, town hall, "Why should a 62-year-old man have to pay for maternity care?" If you didn't know, Blum just turned 62 last month and identifies as a man. 

Barbara Rank, one of his constituents in the audience, had some thoughts stemming from this question and let her local newspaper know. In the Telegraph Herald on Friday she wrote, "I ask, why should I pay for a bridge I don’t cross, a sidewalk I don’t walk on, a library book I don’t read?"

She went on, "Why should I pay for a flower I won’t smell, a park I don’t visit, or art I can’t appreciate? Why should I pay the salaries of politicians I didn’t vote for, a tax cut that doesn’t affect me, or a loophole I can’t take advantage of? It’s called democracy, a civil society, the greater good. That’s what we pay for."

The response was posted on Reddit over the weekend with the headline, "This is democracy manifest." It's generated thousands of comments and was up-voted more than 100,000 times. 

Some hailed Rank as a "hero" and many thanked her for the response.

The Washington Post checked in with Rank, 63, who only learned what Reddit was just a few days ago. She also still uses AOL email and doesn't even have a Facebook. “It makes me laugh,” Rank told the Washington Post. “It's such a silly little piece.”

Not silly at all Barbara — more like simple and powerful.
